WHEN ARCHAEOPTERYX MET THE LIGHTBULB!

THE LIGHTBULB Yeah, I know that ar�cle �tle sounds like the start of another Crazy Dave rant (because it is) but bear with me for a minute.

You are probably a lot like me in that you love bike racing for the excitement & speed, but also for the sounds, smell and maybe just a bit because of its wild and nonconformist reputa�on.

That, my friends, makes us all dinosaurs in the modern world.

So what´s that got to do with Archaeopteryx?

Well “Archie” was either the last of the non-avian flying dinosaurs or the first bird, depending on which branch of science you adhere to.

I´ll bet the other dinosaurs hated old “Archie” because he had feathers to keep him warm, he was light, agile and far less dependent on direct sunlight to keep his blood up to working temperature. This meant he could operate well into

the night and snaffle up all the best food.

He was a winner!

The other dinosaurs had to “recharge” in the sunlight for longer in order to be able to warm their blood and in turn power their muscles and obviously the limit of that was how long the sun was above the horizon each day.

Anyway, enough of that, let´s talk about motorbikes and the future.

Oh yeah, the future, it´s going to be electric isn´t it?

At this point I fully expect to find myself at the centre of the Monty Python sketch from the “Life of Brian” where the guy is ge�ng stoned for ques�oning Jehovah.

I don´t like it either, but we have to face up to the fact that the days of going round and round in circles burning dirty fossil fuels, only to get back to where we started, are numbered.

If we want to keep racing bikes, we need to find a cleaner way of doing it.

It´s not going to happen overnight, but I now believe that by the �me we get to 2029 over half the racing motorbikes worldwide will be nonfossil fuelled and they´ll be winning!

My personal hope is for a giant leap forward in hydrogen technology, because at least then there is hope of retaining the internal combus�on engine in some form. That makes me a bit of an “Ostrich-Dinosaur” because I know that that route is far less efficient than other forms of electric power, but my head is staying firmly in the sand on that one.

At this point I should tell you that Syd never used to care about greenhouse gases, because he figured he´s only going to want to use the planet for another 20 years or so. There are a lot of people

ARCHIE like Syd, but even he is now having a rethink due to the arrival of his first grandson Charlie. Given a bit of luck, little Charlie Day is going to want to use the planet well into the next century, so now the pressure is on to sort it out.

Charlies arrival has changed Syds view of the whole thing and I think that´s a good thing, because if you can change a real dinosaurs mind, there´s hope for us all.

Electric bikes in one form or another are the future and we all need to get used to that cold fact.

I still hate it, but I do now at least accept it.

OK, so why don´t we like the current crop of electric bikes?

Well I´ll probably get stoned by the fans of electric bikes for this, but in all honesty the racing is crap.

There you go, I´ve said it!

Technologically, the bikes are miles apart. The Mugen bikes are awesome bits of kit, but are so far ahead of the competition that there is currently no competition. No competition = no racing.

No racing = no excitement, just waiting to see how many bikes break down before the chequered flag and of course seeing which of the 2 Mugens wins.

It´s not a lack of outright speed that makes them boring, the winning Mugen at last years TT Zero event lapped at an incredible 121mph, which was faster than the winning Supertwin machine by some margin, but without competition and with only 6 starters it´s still pretty boring.

In fairness, the University of Nottingham bike is keeping the Mugens honest and on a fraction of the budget, but we need at least another 20 bikes of that calibre to make it even remotely interesting

as a stand alone race.

The racing won´t always be like that, it will get closer, more competitive and more exciting, but currently watching paint drying runs it a close second.

So how do we get from where we are, to something as close as the Thundersport 500 races that you´ll see today?

Because if the racing was as entertaining as the Thundersport 500 encounters, we wouldn´t care what they sounded like, would we?

The FIM Moto-E championship might be OK when it eventually starts later this year, but the kind of budgets in that series are not going to be obtainable in normal national racing. That is also a one horse race, as the bikes all come from one company - Energica.

So how can we encourage Electric Bikes without having to endure Yawn-Fests of rubbish 6 bike races?

OK, here are my random thoughts:This new technology needs to compete head to head with the current technology and by that I mean the petrol powered bikes.

It´s no good trying to create a special place for them, they need to race against, and eventually beat, the current fossil fuelled bikes.

The University of Nottingham bike is competitive on a fraction of Mugens budget line and race it. It finishes where it finishes on merit and if/when it eventually wins, everyone will want one.

It will be exactly the same as when 2-strokes forced 4-strokes out of Grand Prix racing back in the 1970s – Later to have the compliment repaid by the 4-strokes in the early noughties.

Single cylinder bikes were likewise exiled to the boondocks by the might of the multis in another era.

Those changes were all brought about naturally, as in:Everyone moved to the new technology simply because it was faster and if you wanted to win you had to go with the latest tech.

Electric (or Hydrogen) bikes need to come and challenge us in our sport exactly as it is.

So what are the problems with doing exactly that?

First, we need to find a suitable class for them to race in competitively.

The builders will want to race in a class where they can run at or near the front. That´s no good though, as that kind of puts a cap

on development due to the pace of change in this new field.

We need to put them in with a class where, initially at least, they struggle. Their development can then be measured by how long it takes them to catch up with the ´normal´ bikes.

If, for example, we put them up against the modern 600cc bikes, they would probably struggle to get into the top half of the field as they currently are.

Because most of these machines rely on sponsorship, that might not initially sound very attractive, but anyone far sighted enough to be investing in this technology should be able to see the benefits of that strategy. Long term thinking is what is required and I think that the investors will understand that even if the builders (mostly techno-nerds rather than businessmen it has to be said) perhaps think that is counterproductive.

If/when they get to the front of that class, we simply move them up into the GP1 class to continue their development. Once they start winning there, the natural order

of things would be that riders transfer to the winning technology.

Open class racing, as in “Open” to any fuel, any design and any technologies that may not yet be invented.

There are of course issues with all of that.

Range is no longer a problem, as most of our races are less than 38 miles and the bikes have already shown that they can do that around the Isle of Man TT Course.

Recharge time is still an issue, but that isn´t something that organisers should try to solve, it is something for the electric teams to solve by

way of interchangeable battery packs, or rapid charge fuel cells.

Electric supply.

Again not our issue to solve, we don´t provide power for the rest of the teams to run their tyre warmers etc, so why should this be different?

Every team, electric or fossil fuelled, needs to be self-sufficient in that respect. If several teams want to club together to solve their own specific needs, that seems to be an eminently sensible solution and the more electric teams there are, the more teams can put a few quid into the power supply pot.

Safety is a big concern, but I believe a well run organisation could deal with the safety issues, including fire. The MSA (the car equivalent of the ACU) already require any event running electric or hybrid vehicles to have 40,000 litres of water in a suitable vehicle to be on station and properly crewed. Electric car/bike fires are notoriously hard to put out and normal fire extinguishers simply don´t work.

Bizarrely, the only way to put out a fire on an electric vehicle is to douse it with water and plenty of it! Specific marshals training goes hand in hand with that, but we are always ready and able to take on such things.

So who pays for that?

I think 2 fire engines with the requisite amount of water at each event would cost around 30,000 pounds over the course of the season.

Extra marshals training and PPE would probably add another 5,000 pounds.

So we´re looking at a seasons budget of around “35 Large to ease the situation!”

This is something that it´s not reasonable to expect the Electric Teams to pay for, as they may only number a small handful to begin with. We must encourage them, rather than put obstacles in their way.

It is also a bill that can´t be footed

by the club, as that means the other competitors are indirectly paying for it, as rider entry fees are the primary source of income for all racing clubs.

Putting it on the table of the venue operator doesn´t help either, as each circuit would simply have to increase the circuit hire accordingly, which brings it back to the club/ club members paying.

You could argue that the only way to fund this is to go down the sponsorship route, but then you find yourself competing directly with the teams themselves. The sort of sponsors that might stump up that kind of cash are the very same people that are currently funding the teams.

No, this where the governing bodies and UK Sport need to step up to the mark.

A lot of the University and Technology colleges are using funding from Central Government to design and build these bikes.

Racing has a specific purpose in automotive design, because it improves design in a very focussed manner. You know very quickly if something you have added to a vehicle, or modified on a vehicle works or not. The stopwatch doesn´t lie, and neither does the result sheet.

BUT, what is the point in giving these institutes large sums of

money to develop cleaner, more efficient vehicles if you´re not also going to spend a little on giving them access to a genuine proving ground?

The race-track is the ultimate proving ground, so you would think the government would be happy to put a bit of funding our way.

The “Lightbulb” moment for me, was when I realised that in trying to work out this conundrum, I was in fact trying to work out the future for our sport (and even if it had a future!).

The ACU is in the best position to access government funding and it is in their interests to do so.

The sole purpose of our governing body is to protect, promote and preserve motorcycle sport. It says so in the “Mission Statement” of the ACU Handbook right there in black & white on the first page.

“To make British Motorcycle Sport happen.”

Thirty Five Grand is probably not much more than the hospitality budget for the TT & Moto-GP for the ACU dignitaries and guests. We need to decide what we want more, Crustless Cucumber sandwiches, or a sustainable future for our sport.

The Thundersport 500 Elite, Sportsman and Seniors championships are the absolute cheapest possible way to go road racing on this planet. A whole race package can be picked up for less than the price of a top of the range helmet, boots & gloves. That said, the racing is hard and close - bordering on the frantic at times. The talent of a racer needn’t be judged by the value of the bike he/she happens to be sitting on, some of the most gifted riders in the country ride these humble parallel twins. The predominant choice of bike here is the Honda CB500, but once you’ve watched a couple of these races you’ll never look at one of these staid commuter bikes in quite the same way again. The 500 Seniors championship caters for riders of 40 years of age or older on 1st March of any given racing season.

Some of these lads are fulfilling a long term ambition to race that they simply didn’t have the resources to satisfy when they were younger. When you see the level of skill displayed by some of them, you have to think that they could have made a pretty good living at it if circumstances had been different.

The Sportsman championship caters for riders at an earlier stage of their racing careers than the Elite riders and is also very closely fought.

To win in any of these classes is a real achievement.

WHEN TRACTION CONTROL WAS ALL IN THE WRIST ACTION! As with the corresponding Superbike class, some of the most memorable race action came from a time before the electronics geeks interferred with the direct relationship between the twist grip and the throttle slides. The term “Mad Axe-Murderers” was actually coined by James Whitham when he did a couple of Wild Card rides in the World Supersport Championship and watching it from trackside you simply couldn’t argue the accuracy of that label.

If Ghengis Khan rode a motorcycle it would have been an R6 or ZX6RR from this era (he might have struggled getting his helmet through Technical Control, but who’s going to argue with him?).

Golden Era Supersport is our version of this classic era of motorcycle racing, before traction control took over from pure fearless determination. These classes are not PreInjection or Pre-2000, they are tailored to the bikes that actually raced in that iconic era. The technical regulations allow all and any modifications that were used in period and ban anything that wasn’t around or allowed at the time.

Tyres are any make, any pattern, any type - as long as they have a road legal designation. Full wets are permitted only when a Wet Race has been declared.

The world of motorcycle racing can be an intimidating place for newcomers. If you want to start on a 600cc machine, you’ll quickly discover that everyone else on the grid is a budding Axe-Murderer in the making. In order to ease the transition into this fiercely competitive category, we created the “Pre-National Sport 600” class for riders who have yet to gain a National Licence. It was originally made up of a mix of pure novices and riders who are generally in their second season of racing. It tends to work slightly better than a pure “Novice” or “Rookie” grid because the new riders have some slightly more experienced riders around them that they can learn from rather than the fastest newcomer being left to his own devices.

This is hugely beneficial when it comes to things like lapping slower riders, or dealing with temporary course changes such as lack of adhesion flags being utilised on parts of the track.

Of course those things can be learnt by trial and error, but having someone who has done it before just ahead of you takes the guesswork out of it. We also have a “Freshman” category within this race, which is for riders on a Novice licence with very little experience.The bikes themselves are pretty much the same specification machines as those on the Sportsman Elite grid, but at this learning stage of the process any small differences are immaterial. As with all 600cc production based formulae, the Pre-National 600 Sport & Freshman classes races on “Road-Legal” treaded tyres unless a “Wet Race” is declared, in which case tyre choice is free.

There are no restrictions on the brand of tyre used and all major manufacturers are represented.

CAREFUL WITH THAT AXE EUGENE! These bad boys are the most sophisticated and powerful bits of kit in the paddock.

When you start racing, everyone secretly wants one, but the first time you ride one in anger reminds you very forcefully that they can bite!

It is a reminder of how fast technology has advanced in just a few years when you consider that all of the bikes on this grid have more advanced electronics than even the most sophisticated Grand Prix machines had before the 4-stroke Moto-GP era started. It’s even more amazing to consider that if a decent standard club rider were on one of these machines in any Grand Prix before around 1991, he would probably have won! That is a little factoid that both astounds and offends people like me that grew up with Wayne Rainey and Eddie Lawson as their racing heroes (because NOBODY could have smoked the tyres like they did - could they?)................

This race has 2 categories within one race - all riders contest the main Thundersport GP1 Elite category and that can be won outright by a Sportsman rider if he is good enough.

All categories of GP1 rider may use any tyre, slick or treaded and even 16.5 inch rims if desired. There is an open tyre policy in most classes at Thundersport GB and Dunlop, Avon, Continental and the other brands all put a lot of effort into getting their men onto the podium. If one brand dominates the podium, the rest of the riders very swiftly switch to that brand.

This is a VERY big marketing exercise, because over 1,200 tyres will be used at pretty much every Thundersport GB meeting.

Seeing Yasutomo Nagai, Scott Russell, Giancarlo Fallappa, Aaron Slight and Anthony Gobert not only backing it in on high speed sections, but also squirming out of corners whilst the chassis tied itself in knots may not have been as fast as modern Moto-GP bikes - but it looked a whole lot faster and infinitely more exciting.

Golden Era Superbikes was our version of this classic era of motorcycle racing, before 1000cc across the frame 4 cylinder bikes displaced the “real” Superbikes of the 750cc era. Just looking at these homologation specials on their paddock stands invokes memories of that era and when they fire up, the chatter of the flatslides just makes me grin - I can’t help it. Then we welcomed the GP1 Classic bikes to the grid and they proved to be an excellent addition, being extremely well matched with the older Superbikes. Tyres on both classes are any make, any pattern, any type - including slicks. Rims are also free and even carbon wheels can be used. As you can see from the photo above, the Thundersport GP1 Sport & Freshman riders also race on this grid. These less experienced riders learn valuable racecraft from the experienced riders on the older machines.

The Thundersport 500 Elite, Sportsman and Seniors championships are the absolute cheapest possible way to go road racing on this planet. A whole race package can be picked up for less than the price of a top of the range helmet, boots & gloves. That said, the racing is hard and close - bordering on the frantic at times. The talent of a racer needn’t be judged by the value of the bike he/she happens to be sitting on, some of the most gifted riders in the country ride these humble parallel twins. The predominant choice of bike here is the Honda CB500, but once you’ve watched a couple of these races you’ll never look at one of these staid commuter bikes in quite the same way again. The 500 Seniors championship caters for riders of 40 years of age or older on 1st March of any given racing season.

Some of these lads are fulfilling a long term ambition to race that they simply didn’t have the resources to satisfy when they were younger. When you see the level of skill displayed by some of them, you have to think that they could have made a pretty good living at it if circumstances had been different.

The Freshman championship caters for riders who are just starting their racing careers and have no racing experience.

This is also very closely fought.

Today the non-qualifiers from the main Elite races will also join the Freshmen on this grid.

Modern Superstock 600 specification bikes are now so good that what was almost unthinkable 10 years ago is now true. In the right hands, a Superstock bike could set a lap time good enough for a front row start in British Supersport. Bearing in mind the ÂŁ25,000 price gap between the two bikes, that is an amazing testament to how closely the manufacturers are able to replicate what their race departments are learning from racing and putting it into their production lines. With lap times so close, it seems mildly pointless creating two different races and therefore splitting up the pool of talent, so we combine the two different machine specifications into one (very exciting) race.

We now run two classes in this race, but they are no longer split on machine specification, they are divided based on rider experience and licence grade. This reflects the lesser experience of some riders who contest the Sportsman class, rather than the Elite. This is our first season using this format, which was introduced because we felt that some riders moving up from the Pre-National classes would like to be able to contest a championship against riders with a similar level of experience.

The Elite class is the main championship and it is the fastest 600 racing class anywhere outside of the BSB paddock itself. If you can cut the mustard in this tremendously competitive class, you can acquit yourself well anywhere! Whatever happens the action will be as frantic as only 600cc racing can be.

“YOU NEED ME, I DON´T NEED YOU!” is Ed Sheeran right or wrong?

“You need me, I don´t need you!” is an expression I used to use all the �me when I did private contracts (still do sometimes). That was because I never have tendered for work or adver�sed. People have always come to me and asked me to give them a price on whatever job they wanted done. Some�mes I did, some�mes I didn´t.

The jobs were invariably sor�ng out the chaos of someone else´s mess and those jobs always entail a lot of running around to mend bridges and get things moving in the right direc�on again.

I have always been a fixer, someone who people bring in when they have few (if any) op�ons le�. I´m very aware that I´m not the easiest bloke to work with, but I get stuff done.

I got into organising motorcycle race mee�ngs due the now infamous “Golden Island Road Races” in Malta way back in 1995. These were organised by Bemsee on the Mediterranean holiday island and went so horribly wrong that it will make the basis for a novel one day. (one day when all the main characters are safely in the ground) The upshot was that I got thrown a handful of Maltese pounds and got told to sort out the mess whilst the rest of the Board of Directors got on the next plane back to the UK. An adventure followed.

The point though, was that for the first �me in my life I found myself in an environment where I wasn´t the most important component in the whole jigsaw. It quickly dawned on me that we were all equal, from the assembly area marshals, to the most remote flag marshal, the person calling the races, the start line lap scorer and even the peg runner (I´ll explain about the peg runner some other time).

Instead of struggling with this new way of working, I found it compulsively addic�ve and I wanted the whole team to see it in the same way. The old Officials, Marshals, Scru�neers, Riders divides had no place in the sport as far as I was concerned. YES, the riders are part of the team as well! Without their coopera�on and good will, the whole thing falls apart, so when I talk about “The Team” I refer to the whole set up, riders too.

A�er 25 years in the business I think we now all pre�y much look at it in the same way and that bears fruit in allowing us to run race programmes that others can only dream of. “The A-Team” is an overused phrase, but I can´t think of a more fi�ng descrip�on.

Last year, when the Moto-GP was cancelled at Silverstone, we were ba�ling the same elements in a far less hospitable environment – Trac Mon on the island of Anglesey. Our team got the job done, in full, on �me and it was only on the way home that we heard that Moto-GP had succumbed to that storm.

This year over the weekend of 26th to 28th April, we were a�acked by Storm Hannah at Sne�erton – the fla�est, windiest and least sheltered place in the country.

All 16 circuits in the UK were running motorsport events that weekend and only one organiser completed their whole programme without cu�ng laps or losing races....... You guessed it, the Thundersport GB “A-Team” did it again!

So it turns out that Ed Sheeran was wrong, the truth is that “You need me, but I need you even more!” and I´m very happy with that situa�on as it happens.

The sense of achievement at the end of a busy weekend is on a par with that experienced by even the most ardent adrenaline-junky rider.

Thundersport GB started out with what was our Supertwin class back in 2009 (strangely enough it was called GP2 back then) and it has since appeared in Irish Road Races, the North-West 200 and more recently the TT Races.

GP2-Supertwins aren’t just twins, they are singles too - and always have been and the new cc limits are designed to re-balance the performance of all of the various machines that are eligible to compete.

Some long time participants in the class take the view that the class shouldn’t cater for anything other than a Kawasaki 650 or Suzuki 650, but there are plenty of others who relish the challenge of building something a little different.

STOCKTWINS ARE GP2-SUPERTWINS ON A BUDGET

Whereas the GP2Supertwin category has no tuning restrictions, we also compliment that with our more cost concious Stocktwins Championship.

Cost control was always designed to be a core principal of Stocktwins and the rules are designed to allow most things that are NOT performance enhancing.

It’s been very well documented that the worlds longest running one make championship – the Superteen Challenge – has been the launch pad for a multitude of British and World Championship racers. That was no accident, but it wasn’t exactly rocket science either. The premise for developing young talent isn’t really solely about the machinery they are using, the important thing – the only really important thing in fact – is getting the entire pool of talent in the same place, at the same time. Any of us could be conceited and say that we are teaching them, but there is no point in lying about it – these youngsters are teaching each other. They look at another rider of similar age, ability and size to Team Machine cc Class themselves and just think “If he FC Racing KTM 390 ST can do that, so can I!” and once they’ve made it happen once, The Flying Fox Aprilia 125 ST it goes straight into their skill RS Racing Academy Kawasaki 300 ST set. The more kids you can get together on track at the same HEC Decorating Yamaha 300 ST time, the more opportunity there Rutters Race Team Kawasaki 300 ST is for them all to learn at a faster rate.

Cal was a Superteen in #Handracing Yamaha 300 ST 2000 and went on to win the Freestyle Yamaha Yamaha 300 ST championship in 2001, so there are another 14 years worth of JA Racing KTM 390 ST exactly that kind of talent already Arscott Racing Kawasaki 300 ST in the pipeline. OK, so Casey only took 7 years after leaving the Batham Racing Yamaha 300 ST Superteens to get into a position where he was able to take his first Team IFR Kawasaki 300 ST Moto-GP race win, whereas it’s Rendell Racing Aprilia 450 ST taken Cal 14 years, but I think that just goes to prove the point that Bespoke Bathing Co. KTM 390 ST there is no great rush as British Bespoke Bathing Co. Kawasaki 300 ST riders tend to benefit from a little more time in the development RS Racing Academy Kawasaki 300 ST stages. Hiscott-Gate........a world of awkward questions!

It´s been called “Hiscott-Gate” and has s�mulated quite a bit of debate, but is it such a big deal?

I acknowledge up front that the tone of the ques�oning was well over the top, but were the ques�ons themselves invalid?

I personally don´t think so.

It does give rise to a couple of other ques�ons though:1) If Imola is known to be so unsafe in wet conditions that racing safely simply isn´t possible, how did it get an FIM Track Licence for World Superbike?

Could it be that so few credible venues actually want to host this ailing championship that they can´t find an alterna�ve? Personally, and I know the finances involved, I think this is highly likely to be a major factor.

2) Alvaro Bautista said openly that racing there even in the dry was marginal on safety grounds. This makes me wonder how big the safety difference can be between the two series, given the closeness of the speeds and lap times achieved in both series. In winter testing you often see Superbikes listed inside the top 10 times for Moto-GP bikes.

Par�cularly given that both variants of the inspec�on procedures use the same Statute Book – The FIM Standards for Road Race Courses 2019.

Gianfranco not Gregorio, so perhaps the perceived evasiveness was because it wasn´t actually his call.

Perhaps the wrong man was being put on the spot?

It´s a Catch-22 situa�on for WSBK, they can´t sack off venues that aren´t up to standard if they can´t replace them with something be�er.

The real fix for World Superbikes will be in ge�ng the fans interested again.

The days of 120,000 fans paying to get into Brands Hatch to watch the best two-wheeled racing on the planet seem light years away now.

Only when the gate figure outweighs the cost of pu�ng on the event will the classic venues become interested again. Paul Ricard, Brno, Brands Hatch, Hockenheim, Hungaroring, Red Bull Ring and many others would be banging the door down at Dorna HQ if they thought the public would support their events. Sadly, they all know only too well that World Superbikes has lost its way and those events would never even cover their costs, let alone make a profit.

So perhaps Charlie Hisco� should keep asking awkward ques�ons, but of the promoters rather than poor old Gregorio.

I for one would love to see World Superbikes back at its handlebar banging, flame throwing, and yes even Frankie Chilli dressing gown ran�ng best!
