STEP OUT AND ENJOY LEAVESDEN COUNTRY PARK

AN AWARD WINNING PARK

Leavesden Country Park is full of hidden gems. Take time to discover them and more including a café, exciting play areas, Heritage Trail, woodland walks and picnic areas. If you want to cycle, have a coffee or visit Leavesden HIVE to find out about the local heritage, the park can offer it all. The park, which is owned and run by Three Rivers District Council, was officially opened in July this year, after a £1.2 million investment of heritage, environment, arts and community facilities, funded by the Council, the National Heritage Lottery Fund and Warner Bros. Studios London. Points of interest include:

Leavesden Country Park has not only won the “Professional Community Project of the Year” in the Herts Sports Partnership Award, but also the “Small Visitor Attraction of the Year” in the recent Hertfordshire Tourism Awards 2019.

HERITAGE TRAIL

PLAY AREA & THE GARDEN

RESTORATION

And, that’s not all…

You can enjoy the Heritage Trail from wherever you join it. Nine fabulous works of art set against the backdrop of the park, with each art installation leading you to the next. The sculptures and their themes carry a significance to the community and local history.

Built near the Woodlands Café and Leavesden HIVE is the most exciting play space. Come and discover the thrill of the aeroplane or performing on the stage. The quieter space in The Garden, is ideal for finding bugs in the enormous Bug Hotel, seeing the beautiful flowers and enjoying your lunch.

Enjoy discovering the restored features of the hospital including the St Pancras Workhouse/ Orphanage railings and the 1866 Lychgate forming the entrance to East Lane Cemetery, also under a programme of sympathetic restoration.

The park has also been shortlisted in the prestigious LGC 2020 awards taking place in London in March. These are the biggest celebration of excellence in Local Government to recognise the teams and individuals making the greatest difference to their communities. This year saw a record number of entries and so to be shortlisted is an absolutely outstanding achievement by Three Rivers District Council.

PARK RANGER & LEAVESDEN HIVE Based at Leavesden HIVE, the Park Ranger offers Wildlife sessions, Bat Walks, Young Rangers and an education and training programme for the community. Leavesden HIVE has created a centre for learning, to be enjoyed by all and to learn more about the heritage of the site through the display overseen by the Leavesden Hospitals History Association.

18

LEAVESDEN WILDLIFE The park is home to wildflowers, fruit orchards, butterflies and animals. You will find an impressive collection of specimen trees, like the Chilean Pine, known as the ‘Monkey Puzzle Tree’; the inspiration for the Leavesden Country Park logo. You may spot bluebells and, in the twilight, perhaps a Common Pipistrelle or Noctule bat will fly by. The park also has wildflower meadows providing invaluable places for birds, insects and mammals to flourish.

The Edwardian Garden steps lead you down to the Remembrance Garden, laid in memory of those who lived, volunteered and worked on this site in the many hospitals. All our facilities are fully accessible and site maps are throughout the park to help you find your way. Visit threeriversleisure.co.uk for the regular programme of events.

threeriversleisure.co.uk

The awards give recognition to this innovative project which includes community involvement, Heritage Trail and interpretation boards, Leavesden HIVE, restoration works, the Park Ranger and the park activities. Following the shortlisting announcement, Officers will make a further presentation to a panel of judges to demonstrate the impact, value and community involvement in the park, with results being announced at the awards ceremony in March. threeriversleisure.co.uk

The work in Leavesden Country Park is a result of powerful community engagement to improve the area. A big thank you to all the National Lottery Players without whom this project would not be possible and to Warner Bros. Studios London for their support. Three

Rivers District Council, along with its partners, is delighted to deliver the vision of shared heritage and appreciation of the park. Three Rivers District Council is delighted that this project has now received national recognition. 19
