The blooms of the future

Where does the world flourish? How far into the future do you have to look if you want to know how the world evolves? Which people and companies should we be aware of? What visions should we share and how can we pull together to shape the world?

We have many questions on our minds, and we hope that we can provide a few answers in this issue of THE Stylemate. For this reason, we’ve set our sights on Mexico, because we believe that’s where you can see clearly what tourism will and should look like. We establish that there are passionate people who have learnt to listen to their conscience and then act accordingly. Future researcher Christiane Varga shares with us her vision for the world – will she be proved right?

We are of the opinion that a form of community concept would encourage beautiful flowers to blossom. A concept that provides answers to questions like “How do I manage to bring people together, allow them to take part in something real?”, “How can a concept, an idea be developed through participation?”, “How does something new emerge from passionate, interested, genuine people?”. Because that might just be what makes a difference in future: involving people and not AI.

The first collectible of its kind is Table—Vienne, a solid wood table made according to designs by interdisciplinary Viennese interior architecture and design studio Mezza—Maiso. What’s special about this piece is the possibility for individual configuration. The length and the material, machining and finish can all be tailored to your own requirements. The table delights users with its minimalist design, its pleasant feel achieved by gently brushing the wood and its slanted legs. CARVING

Design studio The New Raw, founded by architects Panos Sakkas and Foteini Setaki, has worked with local school pupils to design Glyph – a vibrant new collection of sustainable play furniture for Eleusis, the European Capital of Culture 2023. The name of the collection, which stems from the Greek word “γλυφή”, meaning carving, refers to the ornamental engraving of messages or symbols on ancient temples. The project is the result of an eight-week “lab” in the Greek city, to which over 700 children from the region aged between 5 and 14 were invited to donate their plastic waste and produce drawings that were later scanned, digitally processed and engraved on the new furniture around the city.

MEANWHILE, OUR WANDERLUST REACHED ITS HIGHEST POINT SINCE THE START OF TRAVEL JOURNALS, AND WE PLAGUED OURSELVES WITH FUNDAMENTAL QUESTIONS. BOCA DE AGUA

¡Buenos días in BOCA DE AGUA! At a place whose name means “estuary” or “water inlet”. How fitting! Because right along the edge of the site meanders a vibrant blue and turquoise-coloured branch of the Bacalar Lagoon. Also flowing into the Boca de Agua are the ideals of a new environmental philosophy merging with the needs of every lifestyle traveller who appreciates the beauty of the simple things and wants to combine moments of inner peace with physical well-being. At least, that’s the claim of Rodrigo Juárez, founder of this innovative multidisciplinary hotel project, and Hicham Zaime, general manager of the hotel. And actually: it looks promising! In times of excessive tourism and urban sprawl, which are threatening ecosystems and the heritage of ancient cultures, Juárez and his team have come up with something different.

It starts with the density of the buildings. They were intentionally kept low to give the jungle landscape room to flourish: the hotel grounds measure 82 hectares, 90% of which has been left undisturbed –and undisturbed it should remain. It is also part of a conservation and regeneration programme, with a hectare of a nearby mangrove ecosystem already having been replanted. Sustainable development and strengthening social communities in the region aren’t just possible. They are tangible, because small local companies and up-and-coming professionals in underrepresented groups are also part of the Boca de Agua philosophy. Environmental design principles and materials are further core aspects.

The most visible sign of what makes this place so wonderful? The unique tree houses! They were designed by top Mexican architect Frida Escobedo, who likes to apply her preference for innovative projects to architectural sustainability contexts. Five tree houses blend discreetly and sensitively into the natural landscape. They are raised off the ground so they have as little impact on the soil ecosystem as possible, and are made from certified sapodilla wood sourced from local construction companies. How about that for the ultimate in elegant and reductive look and feel! Mainly because it continues seamlessly and noticeably throughout the overall interior design, not just in the rooms. The key factor here is exclusive furniture made mostly from recycled materials, made by local craftspeople.

And let’s not forget that membrane bioreactors also treat wastewater and feed it back into the hotel’s water cycle.

While there is a dreamlike beauty in the simplicity of the exterior, paths to inner balance are also provided at Boca de Agua. They come in the form of scientifically backed therapy programmes such as a dopamine reset, which is intended to help promote physical health and lasting fulfilment – away from smartphones, tablets and to-do lists. Stress? Surrounded by the natural world and inspiring architecture? At Boca de Agua, it’s almost an unpronounceable foreign word. It will also leave conscious lifestyle travellers speechless.

MUSA is a visionary sustainability resort in southwest Mexico. Mexican designer Andrés Saavedra and Canadian entrepreneur Tara Medina are the brains behind this “Modern Utopian Society of Adventure”. What sounds a bit like a spectacle from 20th Century Fox actually turns out to be great cinema upon closer inspection. Because through MUSA, Saavedra and Medina are pursuing a hybrid approach that unites commitment to the local natural paradise and pure, luxurious accommodation.

Between the Sierra Madre del Sur mountains and the Pacific coast sits MUSA, an inimitable, untamed landscape with 177 hectares of palm groves – including 1.6 kilometres of beach stretch. In the middle of the site, there is a huge biopool containing over five million (!) litres of fresh water. This natural spring is equipped with organic filters, it runs on solar energy and is surrounded by Hideaways –accommodation inspired by surf shacks that also have solar panels and their own water collection system. The units are all detached and nestled between the mangroves and lush gardens. And they follow in the same beautiful environmental

vein as any exceptional boutique hotel that is just a palm frond away from the Pacific coastline.

The Hotelito accommodation has been integrated into the landscape to avoid disturbing the ecosystem. Designed for conscious explorers, Hotelito runs on solar power. There is composting and soil regeneration programs, roof gardens for cooler interiors and sophisticated systems for collecting rainwater and recycling grey water so the surrounding gardens can be watered. It appears almost nothing has been left to chance. The ecological vision is taken extremely seriously.

All of the suites and rooms provide the perfect immersive retreat, packed with features such as bespoke furniture made out of parota wood, paraben-free toiletries and hand-crafted stone and mosaics from the local region. All of the rooms are decorated with works by local and international artists. Workshop, art and contemplation spaces create new dimensions of creative personal development. Massages, sound baths, yoga and meditation sessions awaken tranquillity in people through the vast programming

characteristic of the vision of the brand. Organic agriculture melts in your mouth. It’s not just the open-air lobby lounge that invites you to collaboratively commit to new ways of thinking and innovative projects as part of a vibrant community – there will soon also be hybrid live-work studios that enable a totally new form of living and working. A jungle, so lush and vibrant. A masterpiece of wild greenery that co-exists alongside coconut palm groves. That rolls into sweeping savannahs, lagoons and grassy landscapes and extends to a five-kilometre sandy beach where the waves of the Pacific crash. NOW THAT’S BEAUTY. Especially as in this over 30,000-acre biosphere reserve, there is a luxury eco resort called Cuixmala that addresses all the senses in its pursuit of sustainable tourism and lifestyle. Because the resort collaborates with the Cuixmala Ecological Foundation, biodiversity, ecosystems and ecological processes in the region are being preserved and restored. Everything revolves around forests and wetlands, around endangered animal and plant species such as crocodiles and butterflies, mangroves and orchids, which are free to live here in their natural habitats and blossom wherever they please. Wildlife cameras throughout the whole reserve watch extremely shy jungle residents like the ocelot and the puma, monitoring not just their territorial behaviour but also their population. Conducting yourself with humility when it comes to natural resources, developing a profound understanding of them: that is one of the many noble objectives. They date back to a certain Sir James Goldsmith, who back in the late 1980s already had an awareness of theoretical environmental topics and had put them into practice – for which he was ultimately knighted.

Today, the project is led by the couple Alix and Goffredo Marcaccini. Alix is Sir James'

daughter, and together with Goffredo, they cater to travelers with exclusive taste. It therefore also appeals to those who want to stay at the Casa Cuixmala. This is the architectural centrepiece of the eco resort on Mexico’s breathtaking Pacific coast. Its iconic blue and yellow tiled domes are visible from some distance, giving a clue as to what wistful, demanding holidaymakers can expect: exquisite views of the sea and the reserve, as well as the interior of the property. It looks like an opulent blend of Mexican, European and Moorish design. Secluded suites and palatial accommodation units provide all the freedom you could possibly need for visual, inspirational and enjoyable distraction –from traditional handmade furniture and typical combinations of colours and silks to international art and the finest organic farm food in the restaurants sourced from the resort itself. There is also a salt water pool and stylishly shaded terraces. Just add sunshine and it couldn’t be more characteristic of the Mexican Pacific coast.

And even if you actually want to leave at some point – so hard to imagine when it’s such a gem of a resort – you can go on excursions to observe the diversity of the reserve and journey into yourself. THE HYPERLOCAL

The differentiation between tourist and local, between residential and holiday locations, between home and away, between leisure and work is becoming increasingly irrelevant. People are immersing themselves deeper in a destination, going where the locals go, to restaurants, cafés, clubs, markets – even staying in their homes while couch surfing. It will no longer be so easy to recognise people as tourists.

SLOW TRAVEL

This counterpoint to selfie tourism is gaining ground. Racing to a hyped location to get the perfect photo and as many likes as possible? Not so much these days. Instead, holiday destinations located off the beaten path are being discovered, and simple and local adventures are being sought out in order to find authentic encounters.

THE UNKNOWN

How do I react to a foreign (travel) environment, how quickly can I adapt? That’s also part of travelling. It is therefore a reference to the future, and how we will deal with it – at the end of the day, the future itself is always an unknown. We never know what will happen in the next moment. When travelling, we train ourselves how to handle the unknown.

ATTITUDE

Sustainability is considered to be more of an attitude, no longer just a concept. It involves smart handling of ecological and social resources, meaning the environment that the destination is linked to. Ultimately, it’s a critical part of what’s on offer. Respectful, empathetic interaction with hotel staff, including fair payment, is also a key element.

PARTNERSHIPS

The future is getting more and more complex, silo thinking and silo acting are things of the past. Partnerships within the hotel and travel industry are becoming increasingly important. Hotels are also incorporating the social environment and collaborating with people from the region. That provides platforms within the industry to show new things and share ideas.

aware of their dependence on natural essentials and the vulnerability caused by extreme weather, hence their pioneering role in this regard.

When it comes to sustainability aspects, you can see that perfume is a product that reflects nearly all the existential challenges of our time. And so far, we’ve only discussed the “juice”, as in the liquid in the bottle.

The question for the future is whether outer packaging is necessary at all if the bottles are designed to be so smart and iconic.

Essences and extracts from flowers, leaves and roots, dissolved in pure alcohol –where’s the problem in that? Everey eau de toilette is an extremely complex product, whose production touches on many aspects that are relevant to sustainability: water consumption, overuse of land, CO2 emissions caused by transport and manufacturing, the use of fossilbased resources, generating waste, and much more.

The annoying thing is that it’s not always clear which solution is sustainable and which is harmful to the environment, so which is the good one and which is bad. Doing or buying the right thing is sometimes not that simple and you can quickly get lost in the details. But don’t panic! In this article, we’ve got a couple of recommendations that are guaranteed sustainable.

Let’s start with the main component of the 1,200 new perfumes that are launched every year: ethanol. When manufacturing using fossil-based raw materials, the carbon footprint is considerably larger than if you were to use biomass. If you consider the area of land required for the cultivation of corn or grain, the matter is suddenly more complicated: intact biosystems and biodiversity affect the climate. And in fields where biomass for ethanol is cultivated, no food can be grown. Coty (Boss, Gucci, Calvin Klein and other fragrance licenses) is already using small amounts of carbon-negative alcohol, during the production of which carbon dioxide is removed from the atmosphere. Other manufacturers want to follow in their footsteps. Recently, there have also been water-based perfumes that avoid alcohol altogether, for example from Behnaz Sarafpour and Buly 1803 (my recommendation for summer is Eau Triple Kiso Yuzu).

Now for the ingredients that make a fragrance a fragrance: the aromatic substances. “All natural”, “100% natural ingredients” – it sounds good, like everything has been done right. It's worth taking a second look here, however, aside from the fact that perfumers are creatively extremely restricted if they're only able to

use natural ingredients. Naturals aren’t entirely harmless to people or the environment. Many have been linked with the development of allergies or even cancer, so they’re being increasingly regulated. The predominantly agricultural production method uses inordinate volumes of water and areas of land: if all the products in the world that smell like roses actually contained real rose, every piece of land on the planet would have to be planted with the queen of flowers (as some very clever brain has worked out). There are often dozens of ingredients in a fragrance and they have to be gathered from every corner of the globe: vanilla from Madagascar, vetiver from Haiti, mint from the USA. They are almost always transported by container ships that run on oil. Synthetic molecules would appear to be a much better solution.

Synthetic molecules require less water, no land and are generally less harmful. But manufacturing them demands a huge amount of energy and emits CO2 The world’s largest chemicals company BASF uses the same amount of electricity in a year as the whole of Denmark and generates some of it in its own gas-fired power stations. In the wake of the electrification of its production processes, the company’s power requirements could triple by 2035. We’re also talking about petrochemicals here: crude oil and gas form the basis of virtually the entire modern chemical industry.

The major fragrance manufacturers who create and produce perfumes for most of the big brands are now going to great lengths to make their production processes sustainable and have set themselves ambitious climate goals. DSM-Firmenich, for example, promises to be climate-neutral by 2025 and even climate positive by 2030, meaning it will remove more CO2 from the atmosphere than it emits. The goal is also to generate no waste during production, and instead to find a use for all by-products, for example using the huge amounts of water used in the extraction of floral essences as floral water in cosmetics. But what about everything else around it, the bottle and the packaging? You can't see scentand the actual product is mostly just a colourless liquid. This is where the container, the packaging and advertising come into play – to let your eyes do the smelling. The distinctive bottle, the feel of the lid, the outer packaging, everything conveys what we can expect from the perfume itself.

Here’s the good news: even though it is often unclear from the ingredients which is the most sustainable path, when it comes to packaging things are a lot more straightforward. The less packaging there is, the more often and the longer it is used for, the better. The ideal situation would be a glass bottle without any outer packaging that can be continually refilled, then at the end of its life span, can be separated into glass, metal and plastic for recycling.

The reality today is sadly rather different in most cases: the production of glass is very energy intensive. The various materials (lid, spray nozzle with tube) are generally impossible to separate from one another. After use, the part strays into the general household waste, as do the oversized cardboard packaging (printed, lacquered, foiled), the foam inlays and the cellophane wrapping.

But things are moving in the right direction: the market share of refillable perfume bottles in Europe increased to 6% in 2022 (NPD market research). Almost all premium brands are now offering refills on some perfumes, be it Prada, Mugler or Chloé. At Kilian Paris, bottles of every single perfume can be refilled as many times as you like, including the incredible rose-scented fragrance Roses On Ice. LVMH (which comprises Dior, Kenzo and Guerlain, among others) wants to use bioplastics for the caps in future.

The pioneers are often the small niche brands, like Ffern in London with its 100% recyclable outer packaging made out of paper and compostable mycelium, and kraft paper tube instead of a cap. The bottles from label Henry Rose, which was founded by Michelle Pfeiffer, consist of 90% recycled glass and the caps are made out of soy. I particularly like Torn from this brand, created by perfumer Pascal Gaurin.

The fact that many perfume store shelves look like a cabinet of sustainability horrors demonstrates that there’s still a long way to go. Some brands are creating a real battle of the materials with creations that remind us of budget toy shops: bottles in the shape of stilettos and lightning bolts (Carolina Herrera), trophies and robots (Paco Rabanne) and handbags (Marc Jacobs). They’re all made out of a mix of glass, plastic and rubber, rhinestones and mica, and Moncler has even incorporated an LED strip. How long does it take for these materials to decompose in the environment? Several thousand years.

In addition to enhanced environmental awareness, there is obviously a need to redefine our idea of luxury. A little tweak here and there won’t be enough to safeguard our future on this planet. What it requires is less of everything in favour of something better and more intelligent. Moving away from the kind of luxury that’s characterised by waste towards a luxury that focuses on quality and a clean conscience. The joy found in fragrances wouldn’t disappear if it weren’t concealed under layers of packaging and kitsch. Perhaps then we would even concentrate more on the act of smelling itself.

Tell us everything from the beginning: how did you come to establish your own brand?

What was the vision behind it?

I had long since had the desire to have my own label, and I was really interested in the whole topic of brand development and management. I wanted to build something that had a positive impact on the world and changed something for the long term, so that when I reached the end of my life I hadn’t just lived, I’d also made a difference that would still be meaningful in the future. Every year, the leather industry kills billions of animals, destroys the environment and has a severe health-related impact on the people involved in production. I was convinced that there must be another material that you could make beautiful and high-quality handbags out of without having a detrimental effect on animals, people and the environment.

How did you get started? Searching for a sustainable factory can be rather difficult. How did you find yours?

After deciding to start BEMENTI, to be honest, I was at a loss to start off with. Every new company is different, and that means there’s no definite plan for how you should do things. For me, the most important thing was to start by finding

the perfect material. At the same time, I was designing my first products and looking for a supplier that could make a prototype. It was clear to me from the beginning that my handbags should be handmade in Italy, as the country is renowned for its craftsmanship and I wanted that exact experience and quality for my handbags. After lengthy research, I finally found a manufacturer who gave me a good impression straight away. After a really nice video conversation with the managing director, I had my first prototypes made out of prickly pear leather. The collaboration was great from the get-go. A couple of months later, I then went to Italy to meet the whole team in person and of course to take a look at the production process on site, to see how my pencil drawing had become a highquality handbag, step by step, thanks to careful handcrafting.

Your bags are made out of prickly pear. Why did you decide to use that material in particular?

Most companies that don’t use genuine leather use polyurethane (PU) leather, so it’s artificial. This material might be vegan, but it’s not environmentally friendly and the quality isn’t that good. That’s why it was never an option for me, and I spent a

lot of time researching what alternatives there were. Eventually, I came across plant-based materials, which have now undergone significant development: pineapple leather, apple leather, mushroom leather, wine leather, corn leather. I found out more about all of the materials, but the only one that I was 100% convinced by was prickly pear leather. It doesn’t just look like genuine leather, it’s also extremely robust, water-repellent, supple and breathable – it’s just great. What’s more, prickly pear leather boasts a unique level of sustainability. The plant requires very little water and grows purely using rainfall and minerals that occur naturally in the soil. Artificial irrigation and fertilisation are therefore unnecessary. The prickly pear can be harvested for many years, with one plant providing on average eight years of high-quality raw material. The harvesting itself is also sustainable. The ripe leaves of the prickly pear are cut off every six to eight months without causing any damage to the plant. They are then dried in the sun without the need for any additional energy. Quite the opposite –because of its high CO2 binding capacity, it has a positive side effect. All of that makes prickly pear leather the perfect material –not just for beautiful handbags but also for shoes, jackets, furniture and much more.

As consumers, what can we do to shop in a more environmentally friendly way? One of the most important points is that we are better informed. That we examine brands in advance and look, for example, at how and where items are made and which materials are used. Many people don’t know where the clothes they’re wearing come from, for instance, and especially the conditions they were manufactured in. It’s also important to steer clear of fast fashion and give more consideration to what we’re buying and what we actually need. That’s what I want to achieve with BEMENTI. I want to make beautiful products out of materials that people don’t need to suffer or die for.

At the same time, I’ve tried to design all of my handbags and accessories so they’re timeless. Because of the timeless design and high quality of the material and workmanship, my prickly pear leather handbags can be worn for many years and accompany people as they experience life’s biggest moments.

The rest of the bag is just as environmentally friendly: organic cotton for the bag’s interior and strap is made from Econyl thread, meaning it is derived from recycled fishing nets, old carpets, textile waste and other plastic waste. The interchangeable, colourful straps are made in a factory in Greece.

At studio.by SEIDL, designer Florian Kalcher is displaying his bench as an example of the concept “Cancel Limits”. It breaks down and casts aside the boundaries between two materials that couldn’t be more different: a piece of scrap wood and mineral-based material Corian. In the end product, the materials are presented in juxtaposition, like the hands of a young and old man, a natural and a manmade product, and they become one.

A fairy tale

His great historical adventure novel “Das Floß der Medusa” (published by Zsolnay) was awarded the Bayerischer Buchpreis (Bavarian Book Award) 2017 and was on the shortlist for the German Book Prize 2017.

Let’s assume the world is an enormous skyscraper. If that were the case, most people would live on the floors in the middle and then aspire to move upwards. They would slave away to maintain their position and pay for their children’s education, so they might one day be able to move to a higher floor – up where there are balconies and a good view. Even the lower floors have guaranteed provisions – they have heating and enough food to eat, only occasionally are there power cuts and every now and then, the taps might spit out something brown. The further up you go, the more luxurious the furniture, the crockery, the chandeliers. Silk sheets and walls covered in art. The food is more refined and some can afford to employ staff from the lower realms. But all of them are intrigued by the luxury lifestyle of those living above them. The media report incessantly about who among the elite is suffering from a broken heart or planning a wedding. There are actually golf courses, sports facilities, swimming pools and even a race track and a mud wrestling ring on the roof. Residents celebrate decadent parties, take drugs and have just one adversary: boredom. Every once in a while, the floors provoke each other so it ends in a fight. People call for patriotism and instil in everyone a fierce sense of pride in their floor. Those in the upper floors refer to a divine order, and a floor of preachers commands everyone to recognise that beneath all of it lies a higher will.

Layers of management govern life with laws and security staff ensure culture and discipline, but they live further below.

During the planning phase, the top floors had been intended for forests, fields and lakes. They were designed for chirping birds, mooing cows and galloping horses, but before long there was barely any room left for farm animals belonging to the residents of the upper floors, and all the others had to be put in stalls in the basement, confined to nesting boxes, fed with chemicals and artificial light. The poorest of the poor live alongside them, fighting over the waste in the rubbish rooms. Sometimes there are riots that don’t result in anything because even the people in the lower middle floors say that those right at the bottom are to blame for their own misfortune – lazy, work-shy and addicted to their vices. The young people, who warn that the skyscraper will soon collapse and block the lifts and stairs in protest, are abused and moved further down for discipline reasons. But they’re right. At some point, the farm animals die, and soon there are none of them left. The greenhouses, which have been relocated to dark rooms, aren’t yielding anything. And so resentment grows, the upper floors are raided one day, the racehorses and greyhounds belonging to the rich are eaten, the gazebos and saunas are burnt down, and classic cars are blown up. Now what reigns is violence and anarchy. As the end draws near, people from the bottom rise up. They are tattered creatures, yet well-nourished. In the basement, they have squeezed the juice from rotten fruit, prepared vinegar and brewed beer. They have stuck together and worked, grown mushrooms, cultivated potatoes and corn, created insect breeding and made fruit preserves. Animal manure makes for a suitable fertiliser, and thanks to a sophisticated system of mirrors, it’s even possible to illuminate the gloomiest of basement rooms.And that’s how, time and again, survivors manage to save their home. How long it takes is another story. When it comes down to it, people always come up with something. Hopefully. But the world isn’t a skyscraper, and this text isn’t a fairy tale. Or is it?

Greener than green

Anyone who finds themselves surrounded by the natural beauty of the Paznaun valley, just like the Bergwiesenglück, bears a certain level of responsibility. Anna and Rudolf Schuchter think the same, and put everything they have into running their boutique hotel and its chalet.

“In addition to hospitality, protecting the environment is a top priority at our hotel. It is hugely important for us that our actions align with nature. That’s why we take care to use precious resources sparingly,” says Rudolf Schuchter. Items aren’t bought for guests from the supermarket or a wholesaler, but from a number of small producers in the region. “In that way, we avoid a huge amount of waste, support our long-standing local partners, save CO 2 because the delivery routes are shorter, and can offer our guests the absolute best quality – what more could you want?”

And the guests? They are immensely appreciative of the regional delicacies produced with such care.

Rudolf Schuchter: “For example, we can fill the fridges of our chalet guests with treats such as homemade bread, bacon, fresh butter and much more – it’s something we’re glad to do.” Local ingredients feature in the restaurant, too, including game and lamb from their own hunting and breeding activities. “And let’s not forget our herb garden, from which we harvest ingredients of organic quality.” One of the great luxuries for guests is a glass of crystalclear mountain spring water, which bubbles out of every tap at the Bergwiesenglück for free. “Nature provides us with the most precious resources for life. Our spring water is one such resource.”

Our guests can avail of the cleaning service as and when they wish.” After all: “We are just one small part of the bigger picture. Lifestylehotels: How does a hotel owner develop a passion for sheep?

Sigi Grüner: Actually, it was the other way round – I got into the hotel business because I married Elisabeth. I grew up on a small sheep farm in the district of Plör, then travelled all over the world before coming back to my home having met my wife. When planning the new direction and renovation of the hotel, we arrived at the topic of breeding sheep, which we integrated into the overall concept side by side with pure indulgence.

LH: Why sheep and not cows or horses?

SG: Sheep were always the main features of my parents’ home, Grünerhof. So, our love has always been for sheep, and our family has had mountain sheep for as long as I can remember. Our location at 1,500 metres above sea level provides the ideal conditions for them to grow healthy and sure-footed. On average, 25 ewes and 40 to 50 lambs graze around Bergland Sölden.

LH: In what way is breeding sheep means of balancing everyday life at the hotel?

SG: It’s part of my daily routine and it’s a form of morning exercise for me. Working in agriculture grounds you and makes you happy.

LH: Are the sheep also a bonus for the guests?

SG: Absolutely – even if it’s just a case of taking a walk to see the flock. Guests can also sense and see the circular economy thanks to the R 200 concept and our motto “Grüner makes things greener”. R 200 stands for “Regional 200”, and signifies the close partnership we have with many producers located right on our doorstep, who supply us with their high-quality food items. And then of course, there are our sheep, with which we earned the Innovation Prize from the Austrian Sheep Breeding Association in 2006.

LH: Do you also use the wool and meat at the hotel?

SG: We are grateful for everything a sheep or lamb has to offer us. From conservation grazing to the wool and the meat. Not to mention the emotions of being on the mountain, in the stable when the lambs are born or on a hike.

Lifestylehotels: How did Es Racó d’Artà start? What’s the history behind it?

The story that our finca tells is a story that took place in Mallorca. This type of finca was a manor house, and the families who lived there were the top in the economy, based on agriculture and livestock. The older sons would inherit the big house, while the younger ones would inherit the other land belonging to them, which was not so fertile, and turned out to be beaches. Then the first tourists arrived and realised the breathtaking beauty of our waters and the island. So, the young people became hoteliers and little by little, these farms were abandoned, and tourism became our only source of income. For us, there is one keyword: balance. That is the secret, and to achieve it, we want to make the world understand that Mallorca is not only sun and beaches, but also culture, archaeological findings, history, nature, natural events, art, gastronomy... and so much more. We want to be able to offer a worthwhile inheritance to those who come after us, to be able to give to their beloved island a respect that will prevail when we are no longer here.

LH: And how do you achieve that? How do you address the sustainability topic at Es Racó d’Artà?

We live with sustainability as our core value. Es Racó d’Artà is a concept that aims to go back to the origins of the island, when essence, architecture, culture, gastronomy and nature were respected. The entire property is about 200 acres of land, with 14 acres of vineyards, olive trees, fruit trees and ecological gardens, so there is certainly a lot to explore inside and around Es Racó d’Artà.

LH: Es Racó d’Artà is not only big on sustainability but also respect towards nature. How do you give back?

In order to create a concept in which respect, in all its definitions and versions, prevails, we had to focus on where respect begins: in oneself, in our inner self. That is why we decided to base ourselves on a nonrestrictive retreat centre, where everyone can find their own path to consciousness and self-transformation, enjoying the true culture of the island,

and knowing that, this time, they will not leave a trace after their enjoyment. We refer to these people as respectful tourists with the desire to connect.

We started the project with a solid intention to give the land the love it’s been missing, to give it back what it deserves. That is why we started with agriculture, and we are now able to produce our own vegetables, olive oil, flour, fruit, wine, natural essences, and honey on the farm, as well as using rainwater from our natural wells. Last year, we were awarded organic certification, which we are very proud of. Once we had all of that under control, we started with the tourist product, restoring an old property dating back to the 12th century, which was formerly a Muslim community called Berbere. When we acquired the farm, it had already been designated a natural park, so our commitment became even more enormous and real.

During construction, we paid great attention to applying sustainable solutions, using 100% high-quality, local and natural materials and traditional Mallorcan processes. We respect the original structure of the finca and integrate nature in all its essence. Nature prevails over mankind, and our owners believe that it is nature that gives them the gifts to create.

LH: Last but not least, design can be a symbol of respect for nature. How important is this kind of design for you?

Our architect and designer, together with our constructor, both owners of the finca, chose to work with local technicians, craftsmen and woodworkers. They selected high-quality materials, unbleached textiles, local and organic products, and chose local artists who lovingly designed and created all the decorative pieces that feature in Es Racó d’Artà. The love and care they show makes a big difference, and we have huge respect and gratitude for their passion.

Belgian heritage

Our journey takes us first to Het Groen Kwartier. The “green quarter” is virtually car free and is laid out like a park, surrounded by cool lofts in old buildings, new-build apartments, detached houses and offices, plus shops, cafés and restaurants. Also part of this popular, almost eight-hectare development for work, life and balance, where in the 19th century there was a military hospital, is august. The hotel itself was once an Augustinian monastery and was transformed into a premium hotel a few years ago by top Belgian architect Vincent Van Duysen. Your claim is “Tourism reimagined!”. To what extent do you think tourism has evolved towards sustainability in recent years?

The last few years, especially during the pandemic and the current energy crisis, have led to a clear rethink in the tourism industry. Individuality, flexibility and proximity to nature are becoming increasingly important for guests. I’m talking about the experiences we’re all longing for – observing the stars at night, listening to the BBQ crackling, watching a storm roll past in the distance – all on your own terrace surrounded by nature. That’s what guests are ultimately after. For that reason, our luxury resorts are embedded in and among nature. Outdoor relaxation areas with fire pits and yoga platforms encourage people to spend time together. And our STROHBOID s are the new “closer to nature” places of refuge.

You used an unfamiliar word there: Strohboid. What exactly is it, and what does it have to do with your sustainability concept?

A STROHBOID is a patented lifestyle product with many features, and the only product of its kind in the world. The core element of all STROHBOID products –be it a lounge, pavilion, glamping tent or event tent – is the unique wooden lattice shell technology. Constructed using locally sourced solid wood and made in Austria, it is the epitome of organic glamping. A STROHBOID stands out thanks to its lightweight construction inspired by

architect Otto Frei, whose creations include the Olympic Stadium in Munich. The shape of the roof is a hyperbolic paraboloid, a complex yet extremely design-oriented form. But it’s not just the products themselves that are innovative, it’s also the wide range of options they give our customers. From a lounge to chill out in and a sophisticated glamping tent to an event tent, anything is possible. We consider the path to a sustainable future in every single project and every product we sell. That's why production is also CO2-neutral and, in addition, "Click A Tree" is used to plant trees for every product sold. For me, that’s what makes it the perfect combination of product design and nature. You won’t just find STROHBOID products at our luxury resorts, they can also be used for weddings, festivals and displays, or simply to provide attractive shade by the pool. The number of ways in which they can be used is huge. Not just for tourists but also for creating private oases of well-being.

You just mentioned carbon-neutral production, something that’s hugely important at the moment. What effect are the energy crisis and climate change having on tourism?

A big one. We’re also sensing that people no longer want to go on holiday no matter what the cost. It’s important to them that the footprint they leave behind on the Earth is as small as possible. At the same time, the desire for time out, for a genuinely relaxing time is growing

and growing. We’ve also sharpened our focus and dedicated ourselves even more to the topics of ecotourism, sustainability and the consumption of resources. A sustainable future is a key aspect here. What do you think about the global movement of top hotels towards working with resources more responsibly?

I think it’s great! The trend, or to put it a better way, the sustainable philosophy of independent and self-sufficient resorts, has crossed over from the USA to Austria via Montenegro. Everything is modular, everything is transportable. The issues of soil sealing and energy consumption play a significant role in current hospitality thinking. Car-free resorts, unsealed development areas, few concrete structures are just a few of the indicators of our sustainability-oriented thinking during the design process.

How else are you taking tourism back to nature?

Tourism is clearly crying out for individualism, for concepts outside the usual mainstream tourist ideas. Close collaboration and communication with customers on an equal footing helps us to stand out in that regard. We visit the future location of the resort, analyse the strengths and weaknesses of the region and narrow down the USP of the site. All in consultation with the operators and of course always bearing the target market in mind.

Our team doesn’t simply carry out projects and steal space away from nature – quite the opposite: our resorts are carefully embedded in the landscape while at the same time providing a harmonious connection with the regional characteristics of the location. In that way, we create an active link with nature and encourage active ways of experiencing nature.

You could almost say we try to indirectly ground people and go back to basics.

Do you believe that because of this overall rethink, people’s searching habits have changed when they’re booking a holiday?

That people really want to get back to nature?

Yes, we’ve been seeing this phenomenon for a while now. Holidaymakers are no longer looking for a holiday, they’re looking for authentic experiences. Where can I unwind? Where can I jump into the lake in the morning then do some yoga?

Where can I go hiking, cycling and experience nature? Where can I finally switch off and really be in the here and now? Genuine, sustainable relaxation is becoming more and more important for guests in our fast-paced world.

What does that look like in practice?

As an example, we’re planting trees in the resorts in new large-scale areas of vegetation and giving some space back to our native bees by setting aside fields specifically for them. In addition to that, all our resorts are equipped with everything you need in nature so you don’t need to disturb it. We want to live with it, explore it and feel connected with it again. We want to create experiences –without any stress. Sitting by a warm fire in the evening and observing the stars, getting up in the morning with the sun to birds twittering and yoga, meditating to the sound of the running water in the resort. You have the whole day to do what you like. Even if it’s just visiting the treehouse sauna. Those who really want to be at the heart of nature can stay in the treehouses and observe the surroundings from the treetops. Up there, you’re that little bit closer to the stars.

And to finish up: what can we as travellers actually do to make tourism more sustainable?

It’s really simple: choose resorts that have been intentionally designed to be sustainable. Place greater value on planning approaches with green ideas, on eco design, and seek out only these places for your holiday. Going on holiday must be sustainable on several levels. Not just from an environmental standpoint but also a human one. What does a dream holiday look like these days? How do our guests want to spend their precious time? Which activities will allow them to find their way back to nature and to themselves? That’s an important topic that I want to convey to every hotel and resort operator. It’s basically more about making sure that personal experiences, the experiences we’re longing for that I mentioned before, perceptions and emotions contribute positively and are fulfilled. Because in the future, the quality and choice of resort will definitely be assessed increasingly according to environmental, climatic and sustainable criteria by guests.

Ecology, plus maintaining and supporting biodiversity have always been core concerns of the five-star resort in Provence.

The Terre Blanche Hotel Spa Golf Resort pursues a holistic approach to safeguard both the environment and the local community, and is a leader in sustainable practices while combining them with traditional methods and state-of-theart technology. This allows the resort to demonstrate that luxury and sustainable actions can work hand in hand. Sustainable environmental solutions are applied in a targeted manner that benefit biodiversity, the environment and of course also guests. Since it opened, the resort has been dedicated to conservation and preserving habitats – today, the area surrounding the hotel is home to over 175 species of plant, 54 species of bird, 41 species of insect and 20 species of mammal, many of which are rare or even protected. BIG, BIGGER, SPA

The spa at Terre Blanche measures a total of 3,200 m², is surrounded by lush greenery and spans two floors. It has already been named as the World’s Luxury Golf Resort Spa and Western Europe’s Luxury Hideaway Spa. The Terre Blanche spa has twelve treatment rooms and two couples’ suites, where a range of body and facial treatments are offered using products from Swiss brand VALMONT and organic cosmetics brand KOS Paris. Personal fitness instructors offer fitness classes such as aquafit, aqua biking, yoga and pilates. After that, you can sip on a refreshing drink in the Infusion Tea Room or on the large outdoor terrace. Also in the spa area is a large 20-metre indoor pool heated to a pleasant 28 degrees, while outside there is a 35-degree vitality pool with invigorating water jets and bubble beds for relaxation. The spa boasts a range of other facilities including a sauna, a steam room, a laconium, a hammam, a manicure and pedicure station, a steam shower, a large gym with modern equipment and a quiet room with a rain shower and ice fountain. The 600 m² infinity pool at Terre Blanche is an experience in itself and captivates guests with a panoramic view of the breathtaking scenery of the south of France.

RIVIERA BERMUDA GRASS

When it comes to golf, one of the biggest ongoing projects currently being actioned is replacing the grass of both golf courses with a new type: Riviera Bermuda Grass, which makes it possible for the resort to reduce natural water consumption by more than 50% and avoid the use of pesticides entirely. And those who keep their eyes peeled while playing golf or have their binoculars with them will be able to spot all manner of animals. The various initiatives to protect and develop biodiversity around the golf courses have resulted in bat boxes and insect hotels, the number of unmown areas has increased and reforestation programmes have been implemented.

Azure blue, pure white and red ochre. These three colours pay homage to the surroundings of the hotel where we’re staying. Les Roches Rouges. Located at the foot of the Esterel mountain range, it dips a toe in the water and keeps time with the rhythm of the sea and the light. In this protected area with a view of the Île d’Or and right on the coast of the Mediterranean, it’s a spectacle of nature and architecture. This is the place to take time out from the world and fully savour Provence in all its smells and flavours, lying in the sunshine and walking around barefoot.

As you arrive at the hotel, you’ll be overwhelmed by the landscape, the natural surroundings, the sea and the small number of houses on the Côte d’Azur before you even catch sight of it, perched on a small cliff. Complementing the nature and the breathtaking view of the sea is the building from the 1950s in the characteristic French Riviera style. Back then, people were moving away from traditional forms and focusing on new materials such as concrete, steel and glass – these mark the rise of modernism in architecture. Added to that is the heritage of the Côte d’Azur, which celebrates life and culture, and values art, wine, agriculture, the Mediterranean and cuisine. “At Beaumier, we don’t create stories,

It doesn’t follow a particular style but rather fundamental principles, and is inspired by the history of a location, its geography, the architectural vernacular of our time and of course the people concerned. “We spend a lot of time getting to know our clients, their visions and understanding their lifestyle, then deriving a design concept from there,” says Wohlkönig. “In collaboration with our network of craftspeople, national and international designers and brands, we create unique, vibrant and intuitive living spaces that will meet the needs of our clients over the long term and bring form and function into perfect alignment,” adds Hamberger.

A RETREAT FIRST AND FOREMOST:

BEL ÉTAGE

In Bel Étage, the studio is currently creating a stylish sanctuary for a family in Vienna’s 1st district. The project is a prime example of their work, as the property near the Wiener Börse showcases the entire Mezza—Maiso portfolio: from concept to design, on to technical details and execution planning and all the way through to full construction planning and project management. After a year-long planning phase, renovation works started in February 2023.

The old apartment, which spans half of the first floor and measures around 200 square metres, will be entirely renovated. The floorplan won’t be changed, but an additional room will be created to aid the flow of everyday life in the kitchen, dining and living areas. During the design stage, special attention was paid to the seamless blending of old and new. To achieve this, existing features such as the old Viennese casement windows, doors and mouldings will be carefully restored, while the 19th-century architecture will receive a sensational update in the form of state-of-the-art equipment and technology combined with a contemporary design. A newly laid floor with French parquet, air conditioning, modern lighting, designer furniture from famous brands, selected artworks and subtle colours and materials will also be incorporated into Bel Étage.

A DWELLING FOR THE SENSES:

NILS AM SEE

In spring 2023, the new Nils am See boutique hotel opened in Weiden am See. Just a short distance from the lakeside resort emerged a contemporary place in which to slow down, for guests looking for a dwelling for the senses. In line with the hotel’s motto, an inviting atmosphere of well-being was created that encourages immersion and submersion, that calms and revives the senses. Light colours, natural materials and nautical boho-style décor complement the beach environment and convey the feeling of a modern beach house. Intentionally created oases draw you in through all areas of the hotel and into the rooms. The rooms spoil guests with a comfortable bed, an inviting lounge sofa, a tastefully designed dining area, pleasantly coordinated lighting and cosy decorative touches. As well as the 63 high-quality rooms, guests can look forward to a heated outdoor pool, a sauna and a yoga and fitness room. It’s another place that makes the world that little bit more beautiful.

The perfectionists

In this issue of THE Stylemate, we’re dealing with “Future Blossoms”. How does a hotel meet the needs of the future?

A hotel of the future will place people front and centre. Our new luxury is based on personal, direct exchange. Space and time for this interaction and mutual inspiration. On a global level, as well as in the urban hotel business, it’s all about the moments in which you feel something: someone has thought about the guests, considered a feature in more detail and chosen an active way to handle the various challenges – be it a staff shortage or the energy crisis. Honest communication is at the heart of that.

How does Refugium Lunz manifest itself?

For us, the Refugium is a balancing act between historic circumstances and today’s demanding technical requirements. We put a lot of effort into building a hotel where you can feel how the building was conceived several hundred years ago. For example, we have left the layout of the entry area exactly as it was. We could have moved walls and built a large lobby –the decision not to do this was a very deliberate one. Guests were coming through this door as far back as the 17th century, and when the door is open now and the summer breeze wafts in, it must have been the same back then, too.

Where did you get your inspiration from?

Our main driver was the need to make tangible the utmost handcrafted quality at all touchpoints. There must be no compromises. Through the collaboration with our Formdepot members and partners, we were able to use materials and products that normally wouldn’t find their way into hotel rooms for cost reasons.

So how much of Formdepot is there in Refugium Lunz?

The Refugium is the sister of Formdepot. We’re also involved in hospitality in Vienna from the very beginning and with the Refugium, there’s an added layer of professionalism that’s required in running a hotel. With the Refugium, we show the full diversity of the company, which has been at the core of Formdepot since the start. To our knowledge, it is the first building to have been created with such close collaboration between so many partners. New solutions were developed and everyone had the opportunity to show what is possible when you put your faith in them.

Which details are you particularly fond of?

I find joy in any places in the hotel that we have helped to return to their former glory. For example the lounge, the façade and the arched ceiling in the entry area. Aside from that, we’re still in the process of discovering new things about the building. The way the light comes in and the ambience constantly change during the summer.

How have you changed your way of working, the way you find work over the years?

We have the chance now to draw on our many years of experience to creatively and technically pursue new avenues. Our repertoire has grown and we’ve therefore become more flexible, more open and more capable.

What do you appreciate about each other?

Our exchange of ideas is definitely a key factor. We’ve been through so much together that we often understand each other without saying anything. We’re very different, but that means we complement each other in many areas and contribute our different perspectives. We’ve got used to working together to find good solutions.

What will the Refugium mean for Lunz in the future?

The Refugium has arrived in the centre of town, that is to say it’s reopened, even though the people of Lunz of course won’t remember the old guesthouse. We’re investing a lot in high-quality publications and perhaps speaking to a new audience. We’re always being described as a leading company. That also brings with it a level of responsibility to create positive momentum. We’re aware of this and are looking for regional exchanges.

What’s next for you?

We’re currently working hard on new event formats so we can achieve high-quality interaction more often at Formdepot. Formdepot has an open door policy and is intended to be a place of inspiration, independent of companies and brands. So it’s actually a bit like a hotel – without the overnight stay, but still a place to which people can come from different walks of life, exchange ideas and then take them away again in different directions.

What does it take to design a good sofa?

To create a good sofa, a designer has to put themselves in the shoes of the users. What are their expectations? How will the sofa be used? To gain a better understanding, I analyse my own experiences and watch other people sitting, lying and hanging around in all kinds of situations, sometimes interviewing them on what they like and dislike.

What was your inspiration for Domino.18? It was the challenge of making a simple design with an abundance of possibilities to create different settings and combinations with just a handful of elements. And of course, this simplicity should never limit comfort or appearance!

What are the requirements for a sofa today? Sofas are centrepieces in the interior and are used in many different ways.

The way we use them is very individual, be it for relaxed sitting or reclining or for coming together and enjoying times with friends or colleagues in a more active way. These days, a sofa offers options for those sitting on it to connect, but also options to do other things thanks to different configurations.

What must a good sofa be able to do?

I focus on designing options for lounging, not designing a single sofa, because I know people have different wishes and sofas end up in spaces that have all kinds of shapes, colours and dimensions. Individuality is a key consideration, while maintaining control of cost and complexity.

Which details are relevant?

Details define the overall look and experience of a sofa: the colour, pattern and structure of the fabric or leather, the stitches, the cushions, the proportions and so on. All details are relevant!

How has the meaning of the living room changed?

The living room has always been the place to relax and the place to congregate with family and friends. What has changed is the way we spend time together, sometimes close, often doing other things like reading, watching a movie or working on a laptop. What also comes into focus is the wish and need to stay flexible. That is why we have made it possible to keep changing the arrangement of the Domino.18, adapting to people’s personal situations and preferences that might change at any moment.

What design object can you yourself not do without?

As a designer of interior objects, I feel connected with everything that surrounds us, everything we like to use both inside and outside.
