FROM THE GM

Dear Community

As we settle into the peak of the winter season, we’re pleased to share a snapshot of the latest developments, initiatives, and operational highlights from across Falls Creek Alpine Resort.

Emergency Preparedness & Risk Management

Safety remains our top priority. The Emergency Management Operational Planning Committee (EMOPC) has been working diligently to strengthen our response capabilities. Updated emergency contact lists are being finalised, and simulation exercises are planned to test readiness for road closures and medical service continuity. Revised Emergency Management Operational Guidelines (EMOG) now reflect new activation protocols and risk assessments.

Bushfire preparedness has also been enhanced, with updated compliance audits

RESORT ENTRY PERMITS

and collaboration with CFA to ensure infrastructure meets current safety standards. Infrastructure & Capital Works

We’ve made solid progress on several capital projects. The Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) upgrade for water asset monitoring has completed its first phase, with phase two scheduled post-season. The new actuated valves at Sun Valley have already improved water harvesting during rain events.

Operational Enhancements

Falls Creek has transitioned to a cashless payment system. To support this change, we’ve updated pre-arrival communications and created a detailed FAQ to help guests prepare. Staff are well equipped to ensure consistent and empathetic service delivery in light of this change.

Stakeholder & Community Engagement

The Stakeholder Consultative Committee (SCC) continues to foster transparency

DISABLED WINTERSPORT AUSTRALIA

Looking Forward

Falls Creek played host to three important DWA events this week as the amazing snow continues to give us a brilliant backdrop to our activities.

Falls Creek Fridays

Our first Falls Creek Fridays for 2025 took place last week with a great morning of sit ski practice, shadowing and lift loading. Our group had a fantastic morning covering the resort, ripping some great runs and partnering with lift operations team to ensure our teams are working beautifully together. The group rode all of the operating lifts and worked with staff to perfect our lift loading procedures.

The afternoon session saw our adaptive instructor community join the DWA team along with our Snow Australia visitors in the Falls Creek DWA hub for a meet and greet.

The team shared some great ideas on working together to enhance not only the experience of skiers with a disability, but also how athletes can find pathways to expand their horizons through talent identification and competition.

The sessions run every Friday at the DWA hub at Slalom Plaza, from 10:30am to 12:30pm and 2pm to 4pm and are open to all with an interest in training, practice or just to learn a little more about DWA.

The famous DWA Meat Raffle PowderKeg plays host to the DWA raffle every Friday afternoon from 4:30pm. Great prizes including, Premix drinks courtesy of Falls Creek Distillery, Coffee from Slides, XTM gear and the meat trays from Farm to Fork, the fruit box from Vegetation, Foodwork’s brilliant Aprè Ski Pack. Come on in, grab a drink, have a chat about how you can support or even volunteer with DWA and have a chance to win some excellent prizes. Well played to our first round winners who

took home some absolute treats. While there is some conjecture as to which is the best prize, all of the prizes were snapped up enthusiastically.

New guides at Falls Creek

12 brand new Adaptive Snowsport Guides joined our ranks this week as DWA hosted new guide training at Falls creek. The group could be seen working their skills on Drovers and Towers across the weekend. These guides are the power behind DWA and the ability to provide equality on the snow. Great dedication and skill was shown by the new team as they mastered the skills required to provide a safe experience for all on our slopes here at Falls Creek.

Volunteers actually make DWA happen

and without this dedication, those skiers and boarders who need assistance to use some adaptive equipment will not get the opportunity to participate in the sport we love.

For more information, visit disabledwintersport.com.au or drop by the DWA office in the Slalom Plaza. You can also reach out to Zac at fallscreek_camps@ disabledwintersport.com.au or Paul at paul. lamb@disabledwintersport.com.au .

CHANGE IS HARD

It’s a universal truth. Why? Ok…here goes.

Change is often difficult because it disrupts established patterns and routines, forcing individuals to adapt to the unfamiliar and potentially uncomfortable. Our brains are wired to seek familiarity and avoid uncertainty, making change a potential ‘threat’ or ‘challenge.’ This resistance to change can stem from various factors, including fear of the unknown, emotional discomfort, and the effort required to learn new behaviors. (https:// neuroleadership.com/your-brain-at-work/ growth-mindset-deal-with-change).

I recently went to the movies with my kids to see the new live action version of the film How To Train Your Dragon. It wasn’t exactly a fight or flight situation. I absolutely LOVED the three animated movies, TV shows, specials, etc. It’s one of those foundational family memories for the kids and I, watching

How To Train Your Dragon in its various forms. When I hear the movie soundtrack there is a kind of auditory comfort and joy that is triggered (also by the Star Wars soundtrack but I digress). When I hear the voices of the movie characters, I can tell which character is which simply by listening to their voices… the movie was the soundtrack to many car trips from Melbourne to Falls & back for a decade.

What has this got to do with change? I didn’t like the new actors' voices playing the core characters. Only Stoick the Vast’s character was cast with the original actor (Gerard Butler) from the first three movies. All the other core characters sounded wrong. It was hard to get used to the new voices. My son didn’t want to see the movie as he thought it couldn’t possibly live up to the original movies. For the first 30 minutes of the movie, I agreed with him. I felt peeved. I didn’t like the new actors. They were messing with something I loved. I didn’t want to have to

change and adapt. Grrrr.

So why did I react this way? Why was I so invested in the voices, of all things, of movie characters?

1. Biological and Psychological Factors:

a. Fear of the unknown: Our brains are wired to prefer what is familiar and predictable, as this provides a sense of security and control. Change introduces uncertainty, triggering anxiety and resistance.

Emotional discomfort: Change can evoke feelings of anxiety, insecurity, and even grief as we let go of the familiar. It often requires stepping outside of our comfort zones, which can be inherently uncomfortable.

Habit and routine: Our brains develop neural pathways for habitual behaviours, making them easy and automatic. Changing these habits requires effort and can feel awkward or challenging at first.2.

Cognitive Factors:

a. Overestimation of current value: People tend to overvalue what they currently have and underestimate the potential benefits of change, leading to resistance.

b. Underestimation of the process: The effort and time required to adapt to

I Dream Of Snow: Australia’s only vintage snow suit rental shop!

change are often underestimated, leading to discouragement and giving up prematurely.

c. Lack of clarity and motivation: If the purpose or benefits of a change are not clear, individuals may lack the motivation to embrace it.

3. Social and Environmental Factors:

a. Lack of support: A lack of support from others can make change more challenging.

b. Environmental barriers: Physical or social environments that are not conducive to change can hinder progress.

c. Changing too many things at once: Trying to change multiple aspects of life simultaneously can lead to overwhelm and make it harder to succeed.

4. Commitment and Effort:

a. Lack of commitment: Without a strong commitment, it's easy to fall back on old habits or give up when faced with challenges.

b. Effort and persistence: Change requires consistent effort and a willingness to overcome obstacles.

c. Fear of failure: The fear of failing or not meeting expectations can be a major barrier to change.

In essence, change is difficult because it requires us to confront our natural tendencies toward comfort and predictability, and to actively work against our ingrained habits and routines. However, with a clear understanding of the challenges involved, a strong commitment, and a willingness to adapt, it is possible to navigate change successfully (https://youngmindsnetwork.com.au/why-ischange-challenging).

So do I face the challenge and to make the commitment to adapt to this edition of the franchise? Not sure I care enough to be honest, but at least I know in this instance it’s about a lack of care factor rather than an inability to change.

You can see what’s happening in store on Instagram and Facebook.

Opening hours are 10am – 5pm. Come in and say hello. • Cheers, Nyree www.idreamofsnow.com

ALPINE RESPONSIBILITY CODE

Respect Gets Respect

Regardless of how you enjoy your snow sport, always show courtesy to others and be aware that there are inherent risks in all snow recreational activities that common sense, protective equipment and personal awareness can reduce. These risks include rapid changes in the weather, visibility and surface conditions, as well as natural and artificial hazards such as rocks, trees, stumps, vehicles, lift towers, snow fences and snowmaking equipment.

Observe the Code and Share with others the Responsibility for a great experience

1. Know your ability and always stay in control and be able to stop and avoid other people or objects. It is your responsibility to stay in control on the ground and in the air.

2. Take lessons from professional instructors to learn and progress.

3. Use appropriate protective equipment to minimise the risk of injury.

4. Before using any lift you must have the knowledge and ability to load, ride and unload safely.

5. Observe and obey all signs and warnings. Keep off closed trails or runs.

6. Give way to people below and beside you on the hill. It is your responsibility to avoid them.

7. Do not stop where you are not clearly visible from above. Look uphill and give way to others when entering/exiting a trail or starting downhill.

8. Always ensure your equipment is in good condition and use suitable restraining devices to avoid runaway skiing/boarding equipment, even when riding chairlifts.

9. Do not ski, board, ride a lift or undertake any other alpine activity if your ability is impaired by drugs or alcohol.

10. If you are involved in, or witness an accident or collision, alert Ski Patrol, remain at the scene and identify yourself to the Ski Patrol.

Know the code. It’s your responsibility. Failure to observe the code may result in cancellation of your ticket or pass by ski patrol or other authorised personnel.

Respect gets respect - from the lift line, to the slopes, through the park and the resort. •
