This Week on the Mountain
We had another fantastic week with smiling faces all around. Our latest camp was filled with joy, energy, and deep gratitude—it was a truly special time for everyone involved. On the member services side, we had some unforgettable family moments:
Contact Falls Creek Alpine Resort via: Em: info.fallscreek@alpneresorts.vic.gov.au or Ph: 03 5758 1200
• Josh, one of our guides, brought his son Leo down from the Gold Coast for the first time. Josh, a snowboarder, trained earlier this season to pilot a sit-ski - on a snowboard! This allowed him to take Leo, who was born without eyes, across the mountain. An incredibly moving moment for the entire family.
• We also welcomed Bec and her daughter Ayisha, both in sit-skis. It was an emotional day, as the family had once thought their days on the snow together were over. Seeing them glide down the mountain side by side was nothing short of magical.
Every week brings new stories, new connections, and more reasons to smile. We’re so proud of what this community continues to achieve - and we can't wait to share more moments with you. •

As I type this on 18/8/2025, I’ve just come back to work after being off the hill for a fortnight as I was unwell. It’s my first few hours in the shop and I’m kinda (but not really) surprised at how tired I feel and that I’m getting a headache.
It was a really hard decision to make to shut the physical and online shop for a period to enable me to slow down and focus on my health and wellbeing. The timing was appalling. August has been since opening
my shop my busiest and most profitable month, so making the decision to close wasn’t made lightly.
When you work for yourself, work in a seasonal industry and in a super specific niche of that industry, any time you are not open is dollars lost, which can be the difference between buying stock for the following year, and in some instances paying yourself a wage that week or month.
When working for yourself and being unwell, it's crucial to prioritise your health and, if possible, manage potential disruptions to your work. The ex-HR Manager in me would tell future me ‘plan for sick days by setting aside funds and adjusting your schedule to allow for rest and recovery. Communicate with clients or collaborators about any deadlines or meetings that need to be rescheduled, and consider delegating tasks if possible’. The reality isn’t that simple.
We all get sick. Anyone who says they’ve never been sick in their life either has a terrible memory or is lying to themselves. It’s statistically extremely unlikely to never get sick over the course of the average person's life. I guess you could mitigate against these stats with either a very narrow or very broad definition of what constitutes ‘sickness’ … but I digress.
High-pressure jobs can create psychological stress that is severe enough to have physical effects, from chronic headaches to nausea to insomnia. Severe stress has even been known to cause strokes. If we find ourselves in the kind of job that is resulting in a hit to our health, we must take intentional steps to better our body and mind. First, try to identify the source of your stress. At the onset of your physical symptoms, write down what’s happening to you and around you. Second, make sure you’re getting enough exercise and mental downtime, voicing your concerns to others, and setting
healthy boundaries. Finally, if none of these things seem to be working, consider finding a new job. (https://hbr.org/2017/11/what-todo-when-work-stress-literally-makes-yousick)
My job isn’t high-pressure (the pressure I put on myself is a different matter and a whole other article). While thinking about writing this article, I found a great piece called “How to survive illness with your freelance business and reputation intact” by Leo Wiles, 03 June 2016 that I found amusing. “Freelance Flu is just like regular flu – except your clients don’t give a toss. And when illness strikes, it’s one of the few times I miss working in an office. Oh, the option to call in sick and stay in bed. Or on the couch with your duvet, tissues and remote control. There’s nothing like getting the rest you need AND getting paid at the same time. Not so when you work for yourself. There’s no one to pick up the slack and not even the cat cares, as long as you feed it occasionally.”
A lot of that paragraph resonated with me and made me giggle. For the first time in a very long time, I missed having the option to call in sick and let someone else deal with your workload (even when it’s usually just sitting there waiting for you once you're better and back at work).
For once, I couldn’t manage potential disruptions to my work. I don’t have the staff. I work in my own business six days a week. I work every weekend in winter. Unless there is a family crisis (and yes, my dog Spot is included in my definition of family) or a kid is going to stand on a podium after a competition, I have not shut the shop in the past.
So I made the decision to shut up shop literally and figuratively. I knew I needed to focus on my health, which meant not looking at emails, texts, social media messages, answering phone calls, and packing orders to post out all of which would have happened if I’d only shut the physical shop and left the online store open.
Did it piss some people off? Yep. Was it the right decision for me? Yes. Without question.
Winter is short in Australia, but life should be long. My decision was what was best for me and my family and I’ve been able to recuperate and come back to work because of that decision. Did I lose revenue? Absolutely, but in the broader scheme of life that’s ok and rectifiable. There may be times in the coming weeks where I need to adjust my trading hours to ensure my health and well-being continue to improve. Check socials for up-to-date store opening hours for the rest of winter.
Thanks to everyone who supported me while I was unwell. Your support & care means the world to me.
You can see what’s happening in store on Instagram and Facebook. Come give @spot. sir.spotsalot the dog a pat & a dog treat. •

Guiding Our Kids Through Kei Shin Kahn. In every great community, there are unsung heroes quietly shaping the next generationand this week, I am proud to shine a light on two of them: Doug and Noreen (Norzie), our local Kei Shin Kahn instructors.
By day, Doug and Norzie might be found cruising through snow on their snowmobiles sharing the delights of our beautiful snowcovered Bogong High Plains on a Falls Creek Snowmobile Tour, but come Tuesday night, they swap helmets for discipline and dedication, leading Kei Shin Kahn classes for our local children.
Doug & Norzie lead with quiet strength. They ask for no recognition, yet their presence is deeply felt. Through quiet dedication and unwavering discipline, they shape not only

skilled martial artists but stronger members of the community.
What began as a few local children in lockdown has grown into a thriving group of over 20 students aged 4 to 15 years old. Under Norzie’s steady guidance and Doug’s undeniable charm, each class becomes more than just a martial arts session - it becomes a lesson in focus, respect, and inner strength.
The structured yet encouraging environment gives kids the opportunity not only to earn grades and belts but also to build lifelong skills in discipline, confidence, and perseverance. Doug and Norzie, we see you — and we thank
you. For the countless hours, the patience, the laughter, and the care you pour into every session, your community at Falls Creek is better because of you. • Georgie Gavisn Will Clift

On behalf of the Organising Committee it is a great pleasure to welcome all participants and supporters to Falls Creek for the 2025 Kangaroo Hoppet. As I write this in the evening of 11 August to meet a print deadline, skiers from 22 other nations have already entered – so once again the resort will really be living up to the tagline ‘Hoppet Saturday – When the World Comes to Falls Creek’.
Regardless of whether you have travelled from around the corner or around the world to be with us I hope that you all enjoy the
warm hospitality and atmosphere that the Hoppet, with a lot of help from our partners and supporters in the local communities, manages to deliver each year to our skiing friends from around the world at Falls Creek.
While welcoming skiers and friends to the event, I would like also take the liberty of speaking on your behalf to acknowledge and thank the groups without whom there would not be an event – beginning with our three major sponsors and partners AGL, Falls Creek Alpine Resort and the Mount Beauty & District Community Bank, and moving on to the Falls Creek cross country grooming team, without whom there would not be a course to ski on.
Finally, to leave the best to last, a HUGE THANKS to the members of our organising committees, our race office staff, the team from Alpine Timing and the small army of volunteers from the local and cross country skiing communities who are the backbone of our operations - with special mention of Birkebeiner Nordic Ski Club, the Rotary Club of Mount Beauty and Falls Creek SES. The Hoppet Dozen, available only from the Kangaroo Hoppet Race Office in Mount Beauty, provides a unique chance to sample wines from three of our local north east Victorian wineries.
The number of grape varieties grown in the Kiewa, Ovens and King Valleys means that getting a range of wines in the mix is never a challenge, the hardest part is deciding what to leave out. This year we have two wine varieties making their first appearance in the Hoppet Dozen. From Sam Miranda we have a Saperavi in the reds and from Gapsted a White Shiraz. Saperavi is one of the oldest grape varieties, originating in Georgia, where they have been making wine for 8000 years. The first thing you will notice when pouring a glass of Saperavi is the incredible colour. Unlike most red wines, where the colour comes from the skin, the colour in Saperavi grapes extends through the flesh of the grape resulting in the intense colour. Which leads us on to the White Shiraz from Gapsted which is made by removing the grapeskin from the juice immediately after crushing.
Beautifully packed in six bottle presentation packs of either reds or whites, and priced at just $95 for six bottles, the Hoppet Dozen is a unique opportunity to broaden your north east wine experience. And they also make a very nice Xmas gift – if you can keep them for that long. A word of advice, don’t leave it until too late on Sunday to do your Hoppet Dozen shopping – the ‘sold out’ sign went up at about 10.30 last year.

explore beyond the groomed trails, particularly for those keen to try a crust ski adventure. If you do head out, remember a few essentials: start early before the sun softens the snow, plan your route carefully, tell someone where you are going and always carry your phone. Hydration and snacks are vital for longer days, while sunscreen, lip balm, and sunglasses are non-negotiable for protection in the strong alpine sun.
The past weekend saw Falls Creek host the Australian National Championships, a final test before the Hoppet. Saturday featured the classic sprint, held under less-than-ideal conditions with wind and fresh snowfall, while Sunday brought blue skies and firmer tracks for the freestyle distance races. The fresh snow was a relief after a stretch of warmer weather had thinned the cover, ensuring that both events were memorable for athletes and spectators alike.
In the women’s sprint, Rosie Fordham claimed victory in commanding fashion, ahead of Hannah Price in second and Satara Moon in third. Elle Sankey secured the final spot in the A-final, rounding out the top four. The men’s sprint final was hotly contested, with Seve De Campo emerging as the winner, narrowly edging out Phillip Bellingham in second. Jayden Spring showed impressive speed to take third, while Switzerland’s Lauro Brändli finished fourth.

Sunday’s 10 km freestyle races highlighted the depth of Australian skiing talent. In the men’s event, Seve De Campo once again proved untouchable, skiing to victory ahead of Phillip Bellingham, with Lauro Brändli taking third. The women’s race saw Rosie Fordham double up on her sprint success, winning comfortably ahead of Hannah Price in second and Isabella Moon in third.
The National Championships also featured Australia’s Para Nordic athletes, who are working toward qualification for the 2026 Paralympic Winter Games in Milano. In the sprint event, Dave Miln led the way with victory, followed by Taryn Dickens in second and Matthew Brumby in third. In Sunday’s distance race, Miln again took top spot, with Brumby close behind. Dickens was unable to compete due to illness, and we wish her a speedy recovery ahead of the Hoppet. Later this year, the athletes will travel to Canada to begin their official Paralympic qualification campaign, and their performances at Falls Creek showed they are on a promising path. These performances also sealed the overall FIS Continental Cup standings, with both De Campo and Fordham crowned champions. Their consistency over the season has been a testament to their fitness and form as they look ahead to international competition. Fordham reflected on her success with enthusiasm: “It was great to be back home racing with the rest of the Australian XC community and to have the junior and open races combined. It was awesome to see so many kids stoked about the sport. Very happy with my performances over the two weekends of national champs and it’s great to have won the ANC again this year. I’m really looking forward to the Hoppet. This will be my first Hoppet and I’ve heard great things about the event so I’m excited to get around it for the first time.”

Creek came with some intense racing. I was super happy to come away with the two wins and with the level being high it made for great racing experience as we prepare for the upcoming World Cup and Olympic season,” he said. “After a poor sprint day in Perisher I had to win both events here in Falls Creek in order to get the points back, so there was certainly some pressure. Credit to Phil and Jayden who are both skiing well. Ultimately it made for some really fast and exciting racing.” SkiMo racing arrives at Falls Creek!
After three years of preparation and some tricky winters, Snow Australia is set to deliver the country’s first-ever Ski Mountaineering (SkiMo) race right here at Falls Creek on Sunday 24 August. This newly minted Olympic sport has been booming internationally, and now the Australian snow and backcountry community gets the chance to be part of it.
Several of Australia’s recent SkiMo World Cup athletes will finally get to compete on home snow, including mountain-running recruit Daniel Trevena and XC Olympian Phil Bellingham.
“It’s great to see a SkiMo race in this part of the world,” said Trevena, who raced his first SkiMo World Cup and World Championship in Europe earlier this year. “The sport’s exploding internationally and there are heaps of local athletes who could do well, so this is a chance for anyone skimo-curious to see and try a race. Lycra junkies, backcountry tourers, anyone can learn to go up AND down fast.”
Bellingham will line up for the SkiMo Challenge just one day after tackling the 42km Kangaroo Hoppet. “Everyone knows I’m always up for a challenge,” he said.
“Racing the day after the Hoppet will be tough, but I’m looking forward to seeing the course and giving it everything I can.”
The Falls Creek Mini-Individual SkiMo will run between Dicky Knees and Scott Chairlift, featuring multiple ascents, descents, and even a boot-pack section to really test the legs. Course inspection opens at 10 am, before an 11 am mass start, with presentations to follow at Dicky Knees.
Snow Australia SkiMo Chair Brian Lichi is thrilled to finally launch the event:
“After two years of cancelled races it’s great to finally see this ready to go. As we look ahead to Milano-Cortina 2026, this is a stunning chance for everyone from the casual tourer to the uphill hero to try their hand at SkiMo and pit themselves against the mountain - and maybe their friends.”
While five Australian women raced the World Cup circuit last season, none will be on the start line due to school exams or being overseas - making the women’s field wide open.
Registrations are open now on the Snow Australia website. • Katerina Paul

FOOD FOR THOUGHT
"There are people sitting there who are deliberately waiting for the trill of being offended. They want to be offended because it gives them a sense of moral superiority!" John Cleese MISSING BOOK
This ‘Missing Book’ advert has appeared for quite some time now. Your Journo has purchased a digital copy from Melbourne University. But, the book itself is important – because it was given to a member of the community to be kept in perpetuity for the community. Titled “The Interaction between Land Use, the Environment and the Hydrology of the Bogong High Plains between 1850 and 1985” it is a vital piece of local history. If anyone can help us, call 0400 350 488.

There’s a wattle blooming every day, somewhere in our land
From the misty alpine passes to the burning desert sand
From the Eastern coastal fringes where the wattle grows the best
To the lonely rugged gorges of the Kimberley out West.
The wattle is our symbol, and a hundred years before Henry Lawson wrote of the shearers’ strikes he saw--“We’ll make the tyrants feel the sting o’ those that they would throttle They needn’t say the fault is ours if blood should stain the wattle.”
Of all the native trees the wattle wins the test
For it blooms in golden trusses and the wild birds make their nest High up in the canopy, well in from the borders Snug and safe from mankind and aerial marauders.
Open 5pm Daily for Food & Drinks
Chicken Wings Plate - 8, 25 and 75 Meat Platters
Brisket, Lamb or Pork… freshly cooked in our smoker
Crusty Bread Roll with Smoked Meat of the day
Sprigs of wattle went along when Aussies left for war
To the poppy-fields of Flanders, beneath the cannons’ roar
The Diggers kept the wattle close --- those brave and hardened men,
And the wattle was their talisman, to get back home again.
Australians love the wattle, and the mighty river gums, That grow up on the Murray, and no matter what fate comes, No matter where we travel, no matter where we roam It’s the Wattle and the Redgum that draw our hearts back home.
