SIT-SKIING WITH DWA

A Personal Experience

Two years ago, at the first Disabled Wintersports Australia (DWA) Fundraiser held at Falls Creek, I bought a sit-ski experience with DWA. It was a snow discipline that I’d always admired as I’d grown up watching some incredible sit-skiers absolutely fanging it down the Summit and Scotts as a kid, in the days before either runs were groomed by Snow Cat vehicles.

So I booked in for my sit ski experience on Tuesday 2/9/2025. I was 50% excited and 50% nervous. For the first time in three and a half decades my centre of gravity was going to be considerably lower to the ground that I was used to and I wasn’t going to be in control of my movement and direction on snow (for the first 30 minutes anyway). Apart from being a bit lower to the ground than I was used to, I didn’t really know what to expect from the experience. Turns out I had nothing to be

nervous about.

DWA is a charitable organisation that reduces barriers so that people with disability can participate in the winter sport of their choice, while promoting and fostering participation by people with disability in winter sport, safely and with dignity. It’s an incredible organisation. Established in 1978 as the Australian Disabled Skiers Federation, DWA has assisted thousands of individuals with

disability to participate in winter sports.

DWA’s headquarters are in Melbourne, and they operate at Australia's five major snow resorts across New South Wales and Victoria. DWA works closely, and collaboratively, with the management teams at Thredbo, Vail Resorts (Falls Creek, Mt. Hotham, Perisher Ranges) and Mt. Buller.

These strong relationships, combined with the support of resort staff, ensure DWA can deliver positive experiences for members, enabling them to find their freedom on snow. DWA’s members range from recreational skiers and snowboarders to Winter Paralympians, and some of the world's finest winter athletes have emerged from DWA’s programs. DWA has operations staff at each resort that are supported by a dedicated team of volunteers (Associate members) who continue to deliver guiding services to our members.

Paul Lamb, the Falls Creek DWA Resort Manger, had previously told me what to expect

and on Tuesday introduced me to 3 other volunteers who would be helping out. Let me cut to the chase. The experience was awesome! I’ve never felt anything like it on snow before. It was like a combination of being a passenger on the back of a motorbike, but being in front and also close to the ground like a go-cart with good suspension. And the speed! Being closer to the ground really enhanced how fast I felt I was going which was brilliant. I had way more control over the sit-ski than I expected, really needing to engage my core to turn the ski once Paul or Gus felt I was ready to start turning on my own. The other thing was I felt like a superstar! The crew involved 4 people: 1 person at the back of the sit-ski facilitating the steering, speed control and breaking of the sit-ski as required, plus 3 people as safety guides (I’m sure that isn’t the proper terminology, but I can’t remember what it’s called!). The role of safety guides were to two fold: 1 person out the front, in advance of the sit-ski to ensure no one cut directly across the path of the oncoming group, and a person to the left and right of the sit-ski to ensure that

people behind the sit-ski didn’t cut into the turning path of the sit-skier. At times it felt like I was the President of the United States riding in the presidential cavalcade, with security outriders in front, behind and on either side of me, waving me on as I skied through an intersection that had been cleared of traffic.

Paul and the team of volunteers were simply superb. I thought I’d freak out when riding the chairlifts while strapped into the sit-ski, another scenario where your centre of gravity is altered, but I felt incredibly safe. The safety protocols of getting a guided sit-skier on and off a chairlift were so smoothly enacted by the DWA volunteers and the Lift Operators that there was not a single moment where I didn’t feel safe and comfortable.

Like many Public Benevolent Institutions and Not For Profit organisations, DWA runs on the smell of an oily rag and relies on its volunteers to help the Org provide the range of on-snow services they do. Volunteers at DWA

come from a range of careers and locations. They are full-time, part-time employees, students, retirees and semi-retirees. However, they all have one thing in common – the desire to share their love of snowsports through guiding people with a disability to ski and snowboard. Volunteers may guide just for an hour or two a year, for several days in a row or for a whole season and can provide direct assistance on the slopes, such as guiding, loading chairs, and providing support, even for short periods.

So next time you see a fundraiser for DWA, pop into where it’s happening and bid on something or buy a raffle ticket. All the money raised goes to helping people with disabilities find their freedom on snow - Because the mountains are for everyone. • Nyree

Starting Saturday 4th October every Saturday and Sunday for the month opening 9am till 2pm. Morning tea, brunch and lunch.

DISABLED WINTERSPORT AUSTRALIA

Celebrating a Remarkable Winter

As the winter season draws to a close, Disabled Wintersport Australia (DWA) is reflecting on an incredible few months filled with adventure, growth, and community spirit. This season has been nothing short of inspiring, as participants, volunteers, and supporters came together to embrace the snow and challenge limits to create unforgettable memories.

From the first snowfall to the final runs down the mountain, DWA’s programs brought together people of all abilities to share the joy of winter sports. Whether mastering new skills on skis, snowboards or sit skis, or simply enjoying the fresh mountain air with friends, participants demonstrated courage and determination that left a lasting impression on everyone involved.

The heart of DWA is its vibrant community - a welcoming space where members support one another, celebrate each success, and build friendships that extend far beyond the slopes. Volunteers played a crucial role this season, generously giving their time and expertise to ensure everyone could experience the thrill of the mountains safely and confidently.

This winter also saw tremendous success in fundraising efforts, vital to supporting DWA’s programs and expanding opportunities for participants. The popular Friday night raffles became a weekly highlight, bringing the community together in support of a great cause. The

Sassy Road

excitement peaked at the big auction held on August 30th, which raised significant funds thanks to the generosity of local businesses, donors, and attendees. These efforts will help fund adaptive equipment and facility upgrades, ensuring the momentum continues into next season.

“This season has been one of our best yet, watching our participants grow in skill and confidence, and seeing the smiles and camaraderie, reminds us why we do what we do. Disabled Wintersport Australia is more than just sliding on snow - it’s about belonging, empowerment, and breaking down barriers together.”

As winter fades into spring, the spirit of the season lives on, with plans already underway for next year’s adventures. DWA invites anyone interested to join their

CROSS COUNTRY NEWS

Why Endurance Matters in Skiing

As the season winds down and the last of the spring snow is being enjoyed, I wanted to share a few thoughts for anyone thinking about getting more into cross-country skiing next year. Skiing is often described as one of the toughest sports out there. Skiers climb steep hills, glide across flats, and cover long distances in all sorts of winter conditions. At the heart of it is endurance, and understanding what that means can help anyone enjoy skiing more and train smarter.

Endurance Explained

Endurance is simply the ability to keep moving for an extended period of time. For cross-country skiers, this means being able to cover long distances, maintain power up every hill, and still have energy at the finish. But endurance isn’t just about being generally fit, it’s a combination of several factors:

• Heart and lungs – delivering oxygen efficiently to working muscles.

• Muscles – being able to repeat movements over and over without tiring.

• Energy systems – using oxygen for steady effort and tapping into quick bursts of energy when the pace increases.

• Strength – keeping a strong rhythm on

flats while double poling and pushing powerfully up climbs, such as The Paralyzer.

• Mental resilience – keeping going even when your body feels tired and your legs are heavy.

How the Body Fuels Skiing

Most of the energy we use while skiing comes from the aerobic system, which relies on oxygen to produce fuel for our muscles. This helps skiers move efficiently over long distances, like cruising across the flats at Falls Creek without tiring too quickly. When the effort increases, for example sprinting to catch a friend or powering up Boomerang, the anaerobic system kicks in. This system provides a short burst of energy but can leave muscles heavy if used for too long. That’s why skiers work on both systems: building the stamina for long sessions while also preparing for short, intense efforts.

Training Endurance

Endurance doesn’t develop by itself. It is built gradually through consistent training, especially in the off-season, which is particularly important for Australians facing a long break from snow. Long, steady sessions such as running, cycling, or roller skiing strengthen the aerobic system. Once that foundation is in place, faster workouts and strength training help skiers manage bursts of effort during climbs, tricky corners, or racing finishes.

It’s all about balance. Skiers need stamina to last the distance, strength to handle challenging terrain, and mental focus to

push through fatigue and keep moving even when it gets tough.

For cross-country skiers, endurance is about more than lasting longer. It is about managing energy, pacing yourself, and staying determined even when the trail gets hard. That combination of physical and mental strength is what makes skiing both challenging and rewarding.

See You Next Year!

As the 2025 season comes to a close, I want to thank everyone who has followed these updates throughout the year. Connecting with the Falls Creek skiing community has been a highlight for me. Even though I spent less time on the snow this year due to illness, the conversations on the trails, the friendly waves, and the shared love for skiing have been incredibly rewarding.

Your support and enthusiasm mean so much, and I hope to see you all back on the tracks next season. Until then, enjoy the off-season, stay active in your own way, and here’s to many more cross-country skiing adventures together at Falls Creek. •

Eight $1000 AGL Scholarships are awarded at the Kangaroo Hoppet to the first Australian man and woman in the following categories. First Australian man and woman in the 42km main event of the Kangaroo Hoppet, the first U23 man and woman in the 21km event, and the first U18 and U14 boy and girl in the 7km. This year three of the scholarships went to Mount Beauty locals., Phil Bellingham, Rosie Franzke and Bethany Franzke.

The awards were presented by Matt Currie, Chief Operations & Construction Officer at AGL. “AGL has proudly supported the Kangaroo Hoppet for many years, and we know that the journey to elite sport can be both inspiring and expensive,” said Matt Currie. “These scholarships are our way of backing young skiers in their development and recognising the incredible commitment it takes to compete at the highest level. It’s about investing in the future of the sport and celebrating the talent within our local communities”

Finn Marsland, Snow Australia Cross Country Skiing Program Director, praised the generous offer from AGL. “These scholarships represent the great community spirit from AGL that has been genuinely appreciated by many of our skiing community over the last decade, from past Olympians down to the developing skiers

coming through our pathway programs. Support from AGL, not just to stage the event, but to also develop and grow our sport is a wonderful contribution to what is for so many people a lifetime sporting and recreational activity.”

AGL has the largest privately-owned hydro fleet in Australia, with major hydro power stations including our local Kiewa scheme. This year marks two decades of AGL’s dedicated support for the Kangaroo Hoppet, the southern hemisphere’s premier international cross-country ski event, held annually at Falls Creek. •
