Fun Snow Visit

Visitors to Falls Creek will notice there are usually a few dogs out being walked in certain area of the village. In the main, the only dogs permitted in the village belong to permanent residents that have received their annual permit. Cats and horses are not permitted in the village. The resort is surrounded by National Park and as such, this policy must be adhered to. https://www.fallscreek.com.au/dog-policy/•

One exemption is for Assistance Dogs and recently Oregon, Fred’s Assistance dog was visiting for a couple of days and the occasional walk along the Raceline was a fun trip for both Oregon and Fred. Fred is an ex-serviceman and discovered Defence Community Dogs (DCD). He applied for - and was successful in receiving assistance dog Oregon – who

even goes to shooting competitions with Fred where here wears the goggles and ear muffs. For the trip to the snow, Fred changed the clear lens for the more snowfriendly lens.

Fred is very grateful to DCD so always willing to advocate for them. They call it a ‘win win win’ program as:

1) The dogs are failed guide dogs that have been deemed suitable for assistance dogs. So gives them another chance at doing what they’re trained for.

2) The dogs are trained through a prison program that gives the prisoners skills on dog obedience training and allows them to spend their last few years of their sentence training the assistance dogs in the community. Which in turn preemptively helps them rehabilitate and integrate back into society.

SES BBQ

As an intro to our annual SES BBQ, I have pinched a bit from our previous CEO, Stuart Smythe, from Edition Fourteen last year.

The CFA is another agency that stations a full-time commander here for the season. The commander, amongst other duties, works with the team on training and education, coordinating drills etc, and undertakes essential works and site visits across the resort to ensure, that in addition to what the local volunteers do year-round, that all the sites in Falls Creek are compliant from a fire safety perspective. Like the SES, this crew swells in winter, with members from across the state joining the team and helping keep the village safe. Then we have the dedicated group of volunteers who make up the State Emergency Services team at Falls. Like the CFA, the corps swells in winter with volunteers from all around the state coming to Falls for the season and this

crew supplements the core group of local residents who underwrite the SES team all year round.

The Falls Creek SES Unit has a unique role in our alpine community. The Unit assists Police and Ambulance with search and rescue operations and retrieving injured persons from across the Bogong High Plains in both summer and winter. To undertake these tasks, they rely on our extensive training and skills in the alpine environment as well as specialised

equipment including snowmobiles, adapted trailers for pickups, 4wds, chainsaws, specific communication equipment and protective clothing.

This equipment is expensive. Falls Creek SES’s major fundraising event is the annual SES Auction and BBQ featuring donated products from local Falls Creek and Mount Beauty businesses.

In fact, this weekend, on Sunday the 14th, the Annual SES Fundraiser will be held at the Falls Creek Hotel, from 12noon. For $25 you’ll get a gourmet BBQ and a beverage, whilst for kids, its $12. There will be an auction and raffles, with plenty of great items to bid for. All proceeds go the Falls Creek SES to help serve the local community. Come along, it’s a great day. Help support the crew and the community and farewell the season. •

None of the gear our SES use is cheap and the annual fundraiser lunch is a great way to support our SES and the work they do. See you there! Pic – Courtesy Falls Creek SES

DISABLED WINTERSPORT AUSTRALIA

Progress, Community, and New Guides

This week at Disabled Wintersport Australia, the mountains were alive with energy as participants and volunteers made great strides in their winter sport journeys.

Carol and her family enjoyed a memorable time at Falls Creek, where Carol confidently sit-skied alongside her husband Mark and their two daughters. It was truly heartwarming to see the family

sharing in the excitement of the mountains together. Local guides Julie and Gus also helped make Carol’s time on the snow unforgettable with their expert support. Meanwhile, Nick was out with his mates, embracing new challenges with enthusiasm. He focused on building greater independence in the sit ski by learning to manage outriggers on tethers and steadily progressing to steeper terrain. Nick’s dedication and progress perfectly showcase the personal growth fostered by DWA’s programs. Thanks Greg for the expert instruction.

In addition to these participant’s achievements, this week marked the successful completion of another Level One guide course, bringing our total new guide recruits this year to 22. Mark, Carol’s husband, also took part in some of the guide training sessions, strengthening the bond between participants and support teams. The training equips guides with

the skills and knowledge needed to safely and effectively support participants as secondary guides on the snow. With a growing list of candidates already signed up for next year’s guiding course, DWA is excited to continue expanding its team of skilled guides - a vital part of providing the best possible experience for all participants. These milestones are a testament to the ongoing spirit and dedication within

the Disabled Wintersport Australia community. With every turn, every run, and every new guide trained, the

organisation moves closer to its goal of making winter sports accessible and enjoyable for everyone.

Stay tuned for more updates as the season continues!

If you’re interested in becoming a guide - even if you can only commit to one or two days during the season - your help would be hugely appreciated. Whether on weekends or midweek, when we have a significant shortage of guides, every contribution helps give our participants the chance to experience freedom on the snow and makes our programs a tremendous success.

CROSS COUNTRY NEWS

Inaugural SkiMo Event a Success

History was made at Falls Creek last weekend with the first-ever Ski Mountaineering (SkiMo) race on Australian snow. The Falls Creek SkiMo Challenge, held on Sunday 24 August in Sun Valley, brought together elite athletes and enthusiastic first timers for a milestone event in the lead-up to the sport’s Olympic debut at Milano-Cortina 2026.

Fresh off his Kangaroo Hoppet victory on Saturday, World Cup cross-country skier Phillip Bellingham backed it up with another win, this time on home snow in his Australian SkiMo debut.

“Pretty exciting stuff, happy to have a race today and see the event unfold,” Bellingham said after his double-win weekend. “I was

a little bit dusty [after the Hoppet the day before], my legs weren’t feeling super fresh, but I got them going again and felt alright in the end.”

Bellingham is eyeing a rare double at the 2026 Olympics, aiming to represent Australia in both cross-country skiing and SkiMo.

The women’s event was won by Ava McCann, who finished third overall behind Bellingham and SkiMo veteran Daniel Trevena. Trevena secured second overall and first in the Masters (40+) category, while McCann impressed with her smooth transitions and endurance despite coming off a strong seventh place in the Hoppet.

“I think it was really special to be part of it,” McCann said. “I’ve been telling lots of my friends in cross-country and biathlon to give SkiMo a go… I think it’s definitely a growing sport and I’m excited for people to try it out in Australia.”

As the only Australian youth athlete competing on the SkiMo World Cup last season, McCann is particularly motivated to see more athletes take up the sport. “It would be really good to see so many people trying it out because I think it’s a super cool sport.”

The Falls Creek course, designed by Snow Australia SkiMo Chair Brian Lichi together with the Falls Creek Events team, drew praise from athletes for its international standard. The layout blended features of both Olympic SkiMo events – Sprint and Mixed Relay – with three transitions, a boot pack on each lap, a giant slalom descent,

and extended climbs.

“The course ended up being a bit of a hybrid between a Sprint and a Mixed Relay,” said Lichi, who himself has raced on the World Cup circuit. “It had all the features of a Sprint but ran at around 6 –7 minutes per loop for the leaders. I’m super proud of this first-ever event, it was great to have elite athletes and first-timers competing together on the same course.”

Competitors completed two laps, with Bellingham clocking a winning time of 11:46 and McCann finishing in 13:20. The field included World Cup athletes and several citizen skiers experiencing SkiMo for the first time.

Bellingham, last season’s dominant Oceania SkiMo World Cup athlete, is in strong contention for Olympic selection. McCann, meanwhile, is currently third in the Oceania women’s rankings, with another World Cup selection event scheduled for Solitude, USA, in December.

What is SkiMo Racing?

Ski mountaineering, or SkiMo, is an Olympic Winter Sport making its debut at Milano-Cortina 2026. It combines endurance and skill through three main event types: Sprint Racing, Vertical Race, and Individual Race.

Sprint Racing

Sprint races are fast-paced, heat-based competitions involving a short, tight circuit that climbs 80–100 meters. Competitors ascend using skins, transition to skiing with their skis on their rucksack for part of the climb, and then make a single descent from the top. Each round is crucial, with completion times for the fastest racers around three minutes.

Vertical Race

Vertical races focus on a single ascent completed entirely on skis using skins, without any boot packing or downhill skiing. The course typically features a vertical gain of 500–700 meters. This gruelling event is designed to push athletes to their limits, demanding maximum effort and stamina.

Relax & Rejuvinate

open Wednesday to sunday, 10am to 7pm massage, facials, hairdressing, nails & waxing

Individual Race

Individual Races are the pinnacle of SkiMo, often comprising multiple ascents and descents. The longest ascent usually accounts for no more than 50% of the total elevation gain. These races, lasting 1.5 – 2 hours for top competitors, highlight the sport’s endurance and technical demands with mass-start racing.

The next Australian SkiMo races are scheduled for Perisher on September 20–21.

Daffodil Day Dip

On Saturday 30th of August, our brave band of educators and parents from Lake View Children’s Centre ditched the winter coats and splashed straight into the icy waters of the Mount Beauty Regulating Pondage for the Daffodil Day Dip, raising money for the Cancer Council.

This year was extra special for our Lake View community. Like many, cancer has touched our lives, and last year one of our much-loved educators was undergoing treatment. Fast forward to this year, and we were overjoyed to have her dive in alongside us - what a celebration!

The energy on the day was incredible. Families, friends, and locals lined the shore, cheering us on as 17 “little yellow ducks” squealed, laughed, and splashed into the freezing water. The buzz of support warmed us up quicker than the towels did!

Together, we raised an amazing $2,496 - a huge achievement for our small but mighty community. We are so grateful to everyone

who donated, cheered, or joined in. Thanks to you, this has officially become an annual tradition, and we can’t wait to make an even bigger splash in 2026.

Should you require more information, or find that spot in your heart that would like to donate, please contact Steph Wilson, Centre Manager, Lake View Children’s Centre, Alpine Children’s Service (ACS); steph.wilson@myacs.asn.au or Ph: 03 5754 4848. •

WHY AMBULANCE SUBSCRIPTION

Because It’s Smart

This publication has run similar articles before. And we will probably continue to run them each year. Your editor would hate to think that someone working or visiting this fabulous resort of ours ends up with a three or four thousand dollar bill for transport to hospital. It can and does happen – and it can be prevented. Read on.

Previously we have quoted figures for this article. But, even without them, the common sense aspect of ambulance insurance is a ‘no-brainer.’

As an example of costs, your editor had a little hearty turn at Falls Creek during the Trade Fair @ Falls Creek. The fabulous and professional Ski Patrol team, from Patrol Director and several others attended – and will it was a tad embarrassing from my point of view, it was certainly eye opening and satisfying to witness first-hand the skill and professionalism all member exhibited. Then it was into the Ambo and down to Alpine Health Mount Beauty. The good news is after and ECG and some blood tests, everything was looking good and home we went. Thanks team for a great job well done.

Then came the next bit. Several days later the invoice from Ambulance Victoria arrived (see image) – a total of $1927 to travel from Falls Creek Mount Beauty, Thank goodness I did not need to go to Albury or Malbourne.

The good news is that I do have Ambulance Cover (and have had for many years) and a quick phone call and Email to Ambulance Victoria sorted it.

The Good News

Fact Number One: Ambulance membership is cheap. A family membership is now $103.88 per year. A single person membership is now $51.94 per year. In my humble opinion, these figures are way too cheap – but no-one can ever say they could not afford Ambulance Membership.

A clever and innovative local lodge manager, as part of his employment contract would include an Ambulance Membership Form – which (unless they could show they were already covered) the employees had to sign – and the payment came out of their first wage cheque. This would be regarded in most circles as excellent management/staff relations. •
