In 2025, the historic town of Tawonga in the Upper Kiewa Valley will mark a major milestone, celebrating 180 years of community and resilience.
Originally settled in the 1840s, Tawonga has grown from a colonial settlement into a cherished rural community, and in two week’s time, residents are coming together for a weekend of festivities to honour its heritage and celebrate its resilience.
From Friday, March 28, to Sunday, March 30, the Tawonga and District Community Association (TDCA), with support from the Kiewa Valley Historical Society, the Alpine Shire Council and the Kiewa Valley Flood and Landslip Community Grants Program 2024-25, will host a series of events for all ages.
The celebrations will include a family bush dance on the Friday night, a community day on the Saturday, and an ecumenical service
on Sunday morning.
The weekend will showcase the area’s rich history, with displays of family recollections, old maps and photos at Tawonga Memorial Hall.
Farm equipment and old cars will be on display in Tawonga Pioneer Memorial Park, along with a BBQ sausage sizzle, an animal nursery, and plenty of other fun activities for children. District CFA will also be present with equipment and specialist services.
“This is a momentous occasion for Tawonga,” said Mark Redmond, TDCA President.
“We’re inviting everyone - locals, visitors, former residents and their families - to join us for this incredible weekend.
“Whether you’ve lived here for generations or just have fond memories of holidays in Tawonga, this celebration is for you.”
The event organisers are also encouraging the public to contribute any photos, historical items, or memorabilia related to Tawonga’s past.
“If you have old photographs, letters, or even small keepsakes from Tawonga, we’d love to display them during the event,” said Mr Redmond.
“It’s a unique opportunity to showcase the

Open Weekdays: 10am – 5pm Weekends: 10am – 3pm
Community members are invited to the official reopening of Tawonga Memorial Hall at 4.30pm on Friday, 28 March 2025.
Refurbishment on Tawonga Memorial Hall began in September 2024, after two contracts were awarded to Joss Facility Management Pty Ltd.
Works included interior refurbishments to the existing infrastructure, as well as the construction of a new deck to the northern elevation.
Alpine Shire Mayor, Cr Sarah Nicholas, thanked the Tawonga community for their patience during the lifespan of this project and extended her gratitude to the Tawonga and District Community Association for hosting the official opening prior to their Celebrating 180 Years of Tawonga event.
"Meeting places, such as halls, are the beating heart of rural communities," she said.
"Tawonga Memorial Hall is the place where community members come together to share a range of experiences, such as supporting their children at Playgroup, commemorating Pancake Tuesday, and celebrating the achievements of Tawonga Primary School students through their annual school play. "I will be proud to stand alongside the users of the Tawonga Memorial Hall and return this valuable facility back to them at the official reopening.
"I encourage any attendees to stay for the Celebrating 180 Years of Tawonga event."
The official reopening of Tawonga Memorial Hall will take place at 4.30pm on Friday, 28 March 2025 at 44 Kiewa Valley Highway , Tawonga VIC 3697.
The event will include formalities, followed by a tour of the facility, and light refreshments.
This project was generously funded from the Australian Government as part of Emergency Recovery Victoria and Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Programs. •

This past weekend, I had the privilege of taking part in the 25th Anniversary of the La Sportiva Razorback Run. With three distances to choose from—22km, 40km, and 64km—I went for the full 64km, with an impressive 3400m elevation gain. I finished in 9 hours 51 minutes, shaving 32 minutes from my time last year (which is all thanks to training with Lee from Mountain Gym over the past 18months) ,But beyond the numbers, this race was about the pure joy of running in one of the most stunning places you could imagine.
From the very start, the mountains spoiled us with breathtaking views, including a full moon setting over Mt Feathertop, followed by a stunning sunrise. The terrain was both challenging and rewarding, taking us through alpine valleys, where we drank straight from crystal-clear rivers, basked in the high plains meadows, and climbed rugged ridgelines. The beauty of the high country is unparalleled, and every twist and turn of the trail revealed something new to marvel at. It’s impossible not to be in awe of the surroundings, and each step felt more than worth it amidst such spectacular scenery.
What truly made this race special was the incredible vibe among the runners. There’s an undeniable energy that comes from being surrounded by people who share
a deep passion for the mountains. The camaraderie was contagious, with everyone pushing each other forward. Choosing the 6am start gave me the opportunity to cheer on fellow runners as I passed by, and that became one of the most rewarding parts of the experience. There’s something truly magical about supporting others on their own ultra journey—it’s a reminder of how we all thrive on encouragement and shared determination.
The course was as challenging as it was stunning. While the heat added an extra layer of difficulty, it didn’t take away from the incredible feeling of being out on the trails. After the race, I headed straight to the Harrietville River for a much-needed cooldown dip, and it was pure bliss—nothing like a refreshing river to revive your body after a long race.
Looking Ahead: Fundraiser & Upcoming Races
With the Razorback behind me, my focus shifts to the upcoming Buffalo Stampede 20km—a fun and final shake-out before my biggest challenge yet: the 100-mile Alpine Challenge. This race holds special meaning as it marks the 10-year anniversary of surviving a spinal stroke at 23. To honour this milestone, I’m fundraising for the Stroke Foundation, aiming to raise $10,000 to help others rebuild their lives after stroke and

Traverse Alpine Group has launched an exciting new fundraiser with a powerful purpose – a car raffle to raise money for Betty’s Place Women’s Refuge in Albury.
In a first for the annual Pre Mother’s Day Lunch fundraiser, supporters have the chance to win a brand new 2025 Volkswagen T-Cross Life (7-Speed DSG) in Smokey Grey.
With only 2,000 tickets available at $100 each, the odds are in your favour, and every dollar raised goes directly towards supporting local women and children escaping family and domestic violence.
The car raffle will culminate at the annual Pre-Mother’s Day Lunch event, hosted by Traverse Alpine Group in Albury on Friday 2 May 2025. If all tickets are sold beforehand, the lucky winner will be drawn at this special event. If
not, the draw will take place at a later date. Betty’s Place Women’s Refuge, run by Yes Unlimited, provides emergency accommodation and outreach support to women and children who are homeless, at risk of homelessness, or fleeing violence.
Last year’s luncheon raised over $100,000, and this year, Traverse Alpine Group hopes to raise even more.
Traverse Alpine Group Proprietor Rosy Seaton said the luncheon is so much more than an event.
“It’s about standing beside women and families in the community when they need us most, and we’re proud to help make a real impact,” Ms Seaton said.
“Falls Creek and Albury communities have always been incredibly generous. Supporting Betty’s Place through this car raffle is a simple way for people to make a big impact.”

The Bogong Centre for Sound Culture is thrilled to welcome Anne Scott Wilson as its newest artist in residence. Originally trained as a dancer and now working in photography, Anne's work explores the relationship between light, time, and the spiritual. She uses light to reflect on the passing of time and the awareness of mortality, creating a sense of connection between the physical world and the eternal.
During her residency, Anne plans to explore sound, space, and light more deeply in Bogong Village's unique setting. She will interact with the environment through walking, using its natural sounds, light, and space as inspiration for her new work. Anne's work draws inspiration from quantum theory. It explores how light shifts between particles and waves, symbolising the interconnectedness of all things. She blends traditional and modern methodsjournaling, drawing, painting, and quiet reflection - to create new works that emerge from the distinctive environment of the B–CSC residency.
Saturday, March 29, at 1pm. B - CSC Gallery, Main St, Bogong Village.
Anne Scott Wilson will reflect on her artistic journey during her artist talk, exploring the relationship between light, quantum theory, and somatic practices. She'll discuss a recent workshop in Vaasa, Finland, where participants acted as assistants in her studio, helping to explore new ways of understanding perception and interconnectedness. She'll showcase the work created during this process, offering a unique perspective on artmaking and reflection. Anne will also share how working with a camera led to her discoveries about light and quantum theory and how these concepts have shaped her photography practice.
Reminder: Lesley Duxbury's "Look Both Ways" exhibition is still on display at the B–CSC Gallery. Don't miss the opportunity to immerse yourself in Lesley's captivating exploration of Bogong Village's unique environment. Using an 18th-century-inspired Black Mirror, Lesley creates hauntingly beautiful images that transform the landscape into atmospheric reflections, inviting viewers to reconsider their perceptions of place.
Through this innovative approach, Lesley reimagines the surroundings of Lake Guy, capturing its moody and introspective qualities. "Look Both Ways" offers a deeply immersive visual experience, encouraging a fresh perspective on the natural world. The exhibition runs until April 6, so be sure to visit before it closes for an unforgettable visual experience. •
