It’s sad – but it keeps happening. Monday this week a fellow worker in Mount Beauty watched a chap re-shuffling his car and luggage – and piling the rubbish out onto the garden kerb. That got too much and he went and confronted the driver – explaining to put the rubbish back in his car and take it to a rubbish bin – of which there are plenty in the area
This littering makes this community – both off-mountain and in Falls - as mad as hell –and it is something we do not deserve. We love our area and we take care of our area. We have pride in our surroundings and we welcome the people who visit our area and ‘appreciate it!’ We certainly do not welcome people who think it is acceptable throw rubbish out anywhere – on the street, in the towns, in the National Park. If you can bring your takeaway food and drink with you, you can take the empty containers back to a rubbish bin or to your bins at home. Nowhere in this country is rubbish acceptable.

One young resident who shall remain nameless has done, over the years, a fantastic job of walking sections of the Falls Creek Road with a garbage bag or three, covering both sides of the road and even going a bit down the slope to pick up some-one else’s garbage – usually doing four or five kilometres at a time. He then packs the garbage bags into his trailer and takes them to the tip. A fantastic

effort and one that we as a community really appreciate.
Another young lady who travels over to Bright quite a lot also has responded to her sense of decency and often stops to pick up the rubbish left along the road.
But why should we have to. It is because some other half-wit has no sense of self-respect and absolutely no respect for the area and the environment around them. And these halfwits we do not need – at any time! •
Ironically, later this month we will have nationally, the Keep Australia Beautiful Week – from Monday 4th to Sunday 10th August – and one of the themes is to ‘Respect Our Roadsides’ Let’s do some follow up on this shall we.
The Victorian Environment Protection Authority has a great App(lication) for your phone that you can download from the App Store or Google Play where you can use your phone to snap a photo of littering, record details and forward the details to the EPA and a fine can be issued – subject to the details being correct.
If you care about this area, download the App and use it while you are a passenger going up and down the hill. •

Aman marched into my shop recently and stood wide legged with crossed arms in front of my display case with a slightly constipated look on his face. I greeted him as I do everyone who comes into the shop, with some variation of ‘hello, how are you today’, assuming he was looking for the bathrooms. His response led to this article.
His opening shot was “I’ve heard you’re the person to talk to about the museum.” While I am a person to talk to about the Museum, I’m not the only person who volunteers their time to the museum. I’m simply the only one who has a retail business that enables people to accost me on a variety of topics between the hours of 10am-5pm.
In summary, the man complained that for the third year in a row when he had come up to Falls Creek, that the Museum was not open so he could go inside while waiting for the windhold to be lifted. I explained how
the people who open the museum to the public are all volunteers, and many of our
regular volunteers have jobs in addition to volunteering their time at the Falls Creek Historical Society. As a consequence, there are times when there are not enough volunteers available to open the museum to the public 7 days a week.
I suggested to him, as I do to everyone who asks about the Museum, that he too could volunteer his time to the museum to help keep it open for visitors such as himself. That the museum was highly flexible and since COVID had changed our volunteering requirements to allow for volunteers who could only be available once or twice in winter.
His response was that ‘I’ve done my time volunteering and now it’s my time in the sun’. I found this response and his attitude to be profoundly sad. Imagine how depressing the world would be if society was made up entirely of people with this mentality.
I’m the Secretary for the Falls Creek Historical
Society, and have been for a while now. While I’m as time poor as the next Mum who works full time, I like volunteering. I like helping because it makes me feel good. Not 100% of the time. Let’s be honest, cleaning the fridge at Race Club isn’t high on anyone’s list but it needs to get done. The chat coupled with a drink afterwards is usually worth it. As human beings we need a sense of connection and community. The value of friendship and community interaction is truly priceless – as human beings, having a sense of belonging and self-esteem are significant factors of our needs and mental health.
(O'Shea,T. IMPACT Community Services’) With busy lives, it can be hard to find time to volunteer. However, the benefits can be enormous. Volunteering offers vital help to people in need, worthwhile causes, and the community, but the benefits can be even greater for you. The right match can help you to make friends, connect within a small community, learn new skills, and even advance your career.
Giving to others can also help protect your mental and physical health. It can reduce stress, combat depression, keep you mentally stimulated, and provide a sense of purpose. While it’s true that the more you volunteer, the more benefits you’ll experience, volunteering doesn’t have to involve a longterm commitment or take a huge amount of time out of your busy day (HelpGuide.org). So, if you wish the Falls Creek Museum was open more regularly, you can do one of three things:
1. Volunteer to write grant applications so the Falls Creek Historical Society can win a grant to pay people to staff the museum.
2. Donate a heap of money to the FCHS, so the FCHS can pay people to staff the museum.
3. Volunteer your time once or twice a year for a few hours to the Museum.

Nine year old Amanda, a member from Victoria, joined us up here this week with her Dad and two sisters. Her older sister was enrolled in Junior workshop, same as Amanda, while the younger joined in the Kids club. It was a great sight seeing Dad leaving the DWA hub each morning with his charges following behind, and all of the DWA guides leaping in to help support the family. Looked more like a flock of ducks than a snow crew but so cute.
Amanda at 9 is an independent skier and the snow sports school in conjunction with the DWA guides quickly worked out that her abilities and independence did not require constant support throughout the day. The team devised a series of check-ins during the day and an exchange of phone numbers would be appropriate. Amanda had a great

week with her family and the last run on Wombats during night skiing capped off a memorable week for the family (and for all of us here at DWA).
Kevin also had a great camp last week, working with our guides on the snow sliders. A piece of adaptive equipment that allows balance to be supported where a person may not have all of the strength or balance needed to slide independently. The crew ran some amazing laps of Wombats ramble over the weekend with Keven leaving the resort with amazing memories and a newfound determination to continue his snow journey. You would have seen all number of sit skis out on snow this week. Independent members from all over have been riding in Falls Creek this week, enjoying the school holidays with family and friends. Campbell, Jim, James, Josh and Zoe have all come to enjoy the fantastic conditions the resort has

Keep an eye out over the weekend and see if you can make out the differences in equipment. You will see at least, some Bi-Skis and Monoskis this week out and about.
Falls Creek Fridays - Meat Tray and Fruit Tray Raffle
Last week at Falls Creek Fridays we had a wet and rainy day out with a whole crew of our existing and returning guides out re igniting their DWA guiding skills. Great to see Leo and Ann out refreshing their guiding skills for the season. Big shout out to Jeff from our Melbourne training crew who gave an extra voice to our guide training efforts here at Falls.
The raffle went off on Friday. We had some new prizes from RAD, who have joined our amazing list of sponsors at PowderKeg. Thanks to the RAD team. Remember, every Friday afternoon from 4.30pm, you have the chance to win. Great prizes including, Premix drinks courtesy of Falls Creek Distillery, Coffee from Slides, XTM gear and the meat trays from Farm to Fork, the fruit box from Vegetation and Foodwork’s brilliant Apre Ski Pack. Come on in, grab a drink, have a chat about how you can support or even volunteer with DWA and have a chance to win some excellent prizes.
AND don’t forget the Flanny chook raffle. Anyone who is wearing a flannel shirt and buys a ticket in the raffle will also go into the draw for the infamous chook raffle. Wear your best colours. Only 4 people in the draw last week so you can massively increase your chances of a win. The foodworks BBQ chook is a real hit.

It was a buzzing weekend of racing at Falls Creek, with club races held on both Saturday and Sunday - open to all and drawing a fantastic turnout on both days. A special shout-out goes to Ivanhoe Girls’ Grammar School, who brought up a big and enthusiastic crew of young skiers to take part. It’s always great to see the next generation out there getting involved and pushing hard on the tracks.
Saturday’s High Plains Tour was held under what could be described as some of the best weather we’ve seen so far this season - a true bluebird day. The snow was icy, fast, and just about perfect for racing. See Mark Falconer’s report on page 9 for the High Plains Tour wrap

The High Plains Tour, sponsored by Cross Country Skier, was successfully run on Saturday 12 July 2025 at Falls Creek. This is the first cross country ski race of the 2025 season so many were extra keen to get their racing legs going. We were fortunate to see blue skies greeting competitors, so the favourable conditions and a well-groomed track meant a fast race. The event offers opportunities for those of any age to take part over distances of either 10km, 5km, 2.5km or 1km. There were 85 entrants across the four course distances. Some very experienced racers took part, but it was also wonderful to see a number of first timers including a large contingent from Ivanhoe Girls Grammar School.
Phil Bellingham again took out the men’s 10km in a time of 24:08 which was just faster than his time from the last edition of the race. Katerina Paul was the quickest again in the women’s 10km with a time of 28:48, which was also faster than her previous winning time. They didn’t have it all their own way. Phil was closely followed home by Lauro Braendli (25:12) and Tim Retchford (28:53) while Katerina led home Hannah Price (29:45) and Rosie Franzke (30:09).
Lynn-Maree Cullen was first home in the 5km race ahead of Mia Gray and Sawa Yamamoto. Rod Clutterbuck was the best of the men taking on the 5km. Genevieve Dubrava won the women’s 2.5km with Annabelle Dubrava and Isla Harriss rounding out the podium. Austin Moszczynski was the quickest in the men’s 2.5km with Fedor Belov and Oliver Brewergray close behind. Alyssa
Moszczynski, Connor Davis and Anna Malcolm were the first three home in the 1km race.
All race results and photos will be available on the website https://skiandpedal.au/ hga_races/
A special mention to the resort operations manager Fred Weir and the grooming team for their work in creating a fast and exciting track. Sophie Hemmingway of the resort administration team also provided help in the printing of the race course maps and the event permit application process. Snow Australia’s Finn Marsland also assisted with the process. Thanks to Emily Harvey and the Birkebeiner Nordic Ski Club for providing race bibs and skidoo. Sponsor Cross Country Skier again provided spot prizes and awards for each age group and for the overall winners and place getters. A huge thank you to Mick Sinclair for his expertise with race entry and results recording and production system and to the Howman’s Gap Allstars (HGA) Ski Club Inc for organising the race.
Thanks to everyone who took part in the event. Your participation helps support this and all other citizen cross country ski races as well as cross country skiing in general. •

Matilda Bloomer, 10yrs, has taken on an inspiring personal challenge for a great cause - she's skipped for 30 days in a row as part of the Jump Rope for Heart fundraiser, clocking in an impressive 10 hours of skipping so far! Her ultimate goal? To reach 30 hours of skipping by November, all while raising awareness and funds for heart health.
Tawonga Primary School students rallied behind her mission on Friday with a special fundraising day where students were encouraged to wear red - the color of heart health - and donate to Matilda’s Jump Rope for Heart campaign. The day was more than just fun and fitness; it was packed with valuable life lessons and learning opportunities.
Teachers used the event to educate students about the importance of a healthy heart, the benefits of regular physical activity like skipping, and the incredible work the Heart Foundation does to support heart research and health education across Australia. In addition to heart health, the school also focused on emergency preparedness. Students learned how to call 000 in case of an emergency, the importance of knowing their home address, and what to expect if they ever need to call an ambulance. It was

an important and empowering experience for children of all ages.
Matilda’s dedication and energy has inspired her school community to think more about their own health and the power of consistent, everyday movement. With her goal of 30 hours in sight, she’s not just skipping for fitness - she’s skipping for a cause that could help save lives.
