The years flash by; the numbers of actual returned service personnel diminishes – and yet the respect increases. Fortunately conflicts of the scale of WW1 and WW11 have not re-occurred. New returned service personnel are now coming from the ranks of Vietnam Vets and those who have seen service in the Middle East. Numbers are being maintained by other service personnel and all are supported by the very appreciative public. Over the years, the numbers of spectator supporters that have turned up to show their appreciation has grown dramatically. This, to me, says that there remains a very strong – yet unspoken – feeling of gratitude and respect among the community and in our quiet way, we just turn up and express our acknowledgement of our ‘diggers.’
ANZAC Day is the one of the few opportunities in the year where people can come together with a solemn and sincere purpose. It is a day that engenders pride and reinforces the gratefulness carried by the bulk of the nation. It is expected that this year will be no different.

Anzac Day Services are as follows. The Early Morning Service will take place in Bi-Centennial Park, Lakeside Avenue (beside the shire offices) beginning at 7am. A small informal service with a speaker from the local RSL. All welcome.
The Anzac Day March will come down Hollonds Street, starting from the assembly point in Park Street, near the Police Station at 10:45am, but marchers should be assembled and ready to go at 10:30am. Whilst Hollonds Street will not be closed, traffic movement will be restricted as the marchers come down the street.
The Commemorative Service will take place at the Cenotaph, beginning at 11am. The Motion
of Loyalty will be offered by local councilor, Noah Tanzen of the Alpine Shire. Guest Speaker on the day will be Lieutenant Callum Leech from ADF, Bandiana.
The address for the day will be offered by students from the Mount Beauty Secondary College – further reinforcing the appreciation of our diggers shown by the young folk in the community. Speakers will be school captains. At our local service, wreaths will be laid by many community representatives and members of the public are invited to do so if they wish. Further details on the service from Mr Bob Williams, President, Mount Beauty R&SL on 5754 1585, or 0427 784 499.
Following the service, everyone is invited to Mountain Monk Brewery for a BBQ Lunch, refreshments and the traditional activities (read two-up), plus a couple of beers and a few old stories. •

The second BESS proposal, by Trina Solar, is now on public notice. The community has until the 8th May to respond. A decision will not be made before this date. Our committee is working hard in the background to write submissions based on the planning documents. Of note is that no decision has yet been made on the Mint Renewables proposal. One would assume that the Alpine Shire Council will be voting on this second proposal at either the April or May Council meeting. We are yet to be advised.
A short update for the community. This is what we have submitted to the Planning Department to date. It is perhaps not necessary to state the danger from bushfires. All who live in the area would be aware of the inherent danger we face every summer.
The development plans for both proposals show that the 30m buffer zone for water courses marked on planning department maps are being impacted. In fact, the two proposals are being built across marked water courses. VicGrid, a state government department have said that the north east region of Victoria is deprioritised. The Victorian Farmers Federation in their submission to VicGrid also advised that the Kiewa Valley should be a no go zone because of its importance to agriculture - dairy in particular.
The Alpine Shire Council have voted to oppose the Mint Renewables proposal. Mr. Michael Juttner, head planner for Department of Transport and Planning has stated that the local council opinion will matter. The National Trust of Australia (Victoria) have written a letter asking the state government to uphold the significant landscape overlay and have opposed the projects. Our professional noise consultant
has written a report stating that EPA standards for noise will not be met if the projects are built. The Dederang Terminal Station is currently being investigated for non-compliance with the noise protocol.
Incredibly the Trina Solar plans show that the difference in elevation from the northern boundary of the site to the southern boundary is over 120m. This will clearly involve a massive amount of earthwork to flatten the site for the BESS benches. None of this information is available in the planning documents.
The department have so far received over 800 objections to the Mint proposal and over 700 objections to the Trina proposal. We submitted a petition with over 1300
signatures to the parliament in opposition to the Mint Renewables proposal. One wonders if we are still living in a democracy?
It is quite astounding that both of these companies promise the community that all the information will be available in the planning stages but then there are no details provided. Everything is indicative. It is difficult at times to know what you are actually responding to!!
The photograph with the red outline shows the approximate position of the Trina BESS as best we can ascertain from the 2D plans. The other is the Mint Renewables BESS. •

Beauty Art Group
The Mount Beauty Art Group consists of around 30 members who meet every Thursday to create and socialise. This group is of mixed abilities from beginners to experts who practice a variety of mediums including painting, drawing, mosaics, sculpting, collage
and other various forms of art. Workshops are held to improve skills with informal tuition available.
Many of the artists are known in the community, with most living locally. Several members hold internation appeal and many works are on public display overseas. Last year’s exhibition was a huge success and it is anticipated that this year’s show will be just as big with over 200 works on display for show and sale – all created locally by our talented team. And, with a considerable amount of effort and skill going into each piece, the artists would love everyone to come along and take in all that is on display. Their work is enjoyable and to be appreciated. If you would like to show your appreciation, or simply enjoy some wonderful art, make a point of visiting the show at the Mount Beauty Community Centre, top end of Hollonds Street.
Come & Enjoy: Friday 18 April: 10am-4pm. Saturday 19 April: 9am-4.30pm. Sunday 20 April: 10am-4pm. Monday 21 April: 10am2pm. A Gold Coin is all that is asked to enjoy this wonderful exhibition.

After a year of planning, prepping, countless hours of training, and eight months of relentless fundraising, the Run for Resilience 100-mile challenge is complete. And truthfully... I’ve been left speechless.
This entire adventure would not have been possible without the unwavering support of my family, friends, and the wider community. From day one, you’ve been there -encouraging, backing, and believing in this wild dream.
It’s wild to think that just three years ago, I ran my first-ever race: the 25km Alpine Challenge. Back then, 100 miles felt like something only the truly insane attempted. But that first race sparked something - not just in me, but in my good mate Zac Howard. His spontaneous decision to sign up for the 60km Alpine Challenge the following year kicked off what we now call our FOMO friendship - a training bond built on curiosity, competitiveness, and shared grit. Since then, we’ve trained side-by-side, pushing each other every step of the way.
And now, two years later, that FOMO has

grown into something epic. What started from one race turned into three of us— myself, Zac, and the quiet but unstoppable Britta Weller—taking on one of Australia’s toughest ultra-marathons: the 100-mile Alpine Challenge. And what an adventure it was.
With a 4:30am start, pristine conditions, and an almost full moon guiding us, we set off - not to try and win, but to just make sure we finish. Because this isn’t a race against others. It’s a race against yourself. Against the mountain. Against the voice in your head that says, "You must stop."
And what I learned is this: you don’t finish this 100-miler course alone. It’s the encouragement, support, and shared strength of others that carry you through.
There were laughs, challenges, and absolute carnage - the type two fun kind. From chasing down runners, to random chats, climbing over fallen trees, dodging wasps, enduring battered body parts, and relying on stubborn grit... this run had it all.
Some unforgettable highlights?
• Surprising my brothers by charging ahead of schedule -mildly terrifying them that they might not be able to keep up when it was their turn to pace me.

for pacing me - before setting off into the longest and toughest stretch of the course, now with my other brother by my side. By 3am, we were summiting Feathertop, officially crossing the 24-hour mark with no sleep. I managed to take a couple of dramatic stacks coming down Diamantina Ridge. One particularly gnarly fall had my brother worried I’d crushed my tailbone... but thanks to my hefty pack and a well-trained gluteus maximus, I walked away laughing.
As we neared the final stretch, the love from friends, family, and community became even more tangible. I was hitting a wall with fatigue and stiffness by the time we reached Pole 333 and was struggling to pick up any pace to run. About 1km out from the final checkpoint, I hit play on “You’re the Voice” by John Farnham—and just like that, I was off like a rocket. Singing my heart out (and apparently sounding like a dying seagull— my brother seriously regretted not bringing earplugs), I flew into Pretty Valley looking strong... if maybe just a little bit unhinged. It wasn’t just my family waiting for me at the final checkpoint—Doug and Norz were there too, cameras in hand, ready to capture the final moments of this wild journey.
Makka joined me for the final pinch up Mt McKay, giving my brother a much-needed rest. Sheepy popped up out of nowhere with a blazing smile and joined me for a surprise jog and chat along Pretty Valley Road. And then, sprinting into the finish line, still singing Farnham at the top of my lungs, I was met with the most incredible crowd of people, all there to cheer me home.
Honestly... There are no words big enough for the gratitude I feel.
Running this 100-miler was always more than just a personal challenge—it was deeply symbolic. Ten years ago, I experienced a spinal stroke. And here I was, a decade later, running 160km through the mountains with a heart full of purpose and a community rallying behind me.
Not only did I complete the run, but thanks to your generosity, I surpassed my fundraising goal of $10,000. And donations are still open for another week—who knows how far we can go together?
So... what’s next?
Well, now that we’ve run our run—it’s time to run yours.
