DESERVED RECOGNITION

SES Awards

Management of the Victorian SES headquarters recently attended an awards dinner at Nelse Lodge Falls Creek, to recognise the commitment of long-term members of the Falls Creek SES unit.

Additional awards acknowledged volunteers for their contributions during the 2022 floods, which caused a landslip on Bogong High Plains Road.

35 people attended the dinner including SES headquarters management Dean O’Hara Assistant Chief Officer, Ray Jasper Acting Deputy Chief Officer, Cain Trist Deputy Chief Officer, Charlie Sexton Operations Manager and Lucinda Leverett Volunteer Support Officer.

Awards were presented to:

5 years commitment: Damien Myers; Andrew Rist; Myra Rist; Sven Erikson; Fraser Wilkinson

RESORT ENTRY PERMITS

10 years: David Etherton; Mark Weir; Brett Williams; David Quick; Nick Demopoulos. 15 years: Damian Allport; Laif Moegel; Fred Weir; Renja Moegel.

30 years: Debbie Howie.

40 years: Robin Spargo & Yogi Moegel. Falls Creek Search and Rescue began in 1958 with little resources and limited funding from FCTAMC (Falls Creek Tourist Area Management Committee – now ARV). It became an official SES unit in the early 1980's, providing appropriate resources and additional specialised training.

The Falls Creek SES unit has a unique role in the alpine environment, both summer and winter.

Winter presents unique demands for our unit. The winter environment can be harsh and ever changing, the weather unforgiving and brutal. We need to be skilled and prepared for any event.

The weather dramatically changes the alpine area regularly. Our weekly winter training exercises on the high plains via snowmobiles, allow members to understand where snow conditions change such as developing crevices, creeks either snow covered or exposed, cracks in the surface changing, potential avalanche sites developing and snowdrifts developing along normally flat surfaces.

The High Plains are vast, thus understanding how to navigate the area safely, and without getting lost or injured, takes a lot of training, experience, time and use of appropriate equipment.

The challenges are endless and can be life threatening without proper skills, knowledge, training, and regular inspections of the high plains. Knowledge and skillsets build with each weekly exercise. Our unit is highly specialised.

Because of our extensive training and skillsets, the Unit assists Police and Ambulance with searching and rescues of lost parties, and retrieval of injured persons. This usually occurs in blizzards, and other extreme weather events but some days we are lucky enough to experience blue bird days making rescues and retrieval easier. The weather and conditions are never the same.

The unit also supports the Kangaroo Hoppet, a major international event conducted in the High Plains.

Specialised alpine training occurs year-round to ensure that a high level of alpine skills are developed and maintained for both summer and winter responses. Safety is paramount. This last summer, ten of the crew completed their chain saw qualifications and crew member Level Two.

In summer, the unit utilises 4wd’s to access the high plains. Members must be trained and experienced in alpine retrieval. The summer landscape is vastly different to winter. Once again, navigation takes on a new role during this period with a high level of local knowledge of the fire tracks, walking trails and how to access to remote areas swiftly and safely. In the Alpine environment, specialised equipment is required to conduct search and rescue operations. Equipment includes snowmobiles, adapted trailers for pickups,

crampons for ice rescues, 4wd’s, specific communication equipment and protective alpine clothing.

Specialised equipment is expensive. Falls Creek SES conducts regular fundraising events such as the Annual SES BBQ with an auction of donated products from local Falls Creek businesses. This event attracts hundreds of attendees raising substantial funds to help support the needs of the unit. We attend the Ice Plunge selling BBQ items for further fund raising as well as other community events. People find our displays interesting given the specialised equipment required to conduct our rescues and retrievals.

Falls Creek SES plays a vital role in the safety of Alpine High Plains’ visitors. Its members

are dedicated, providing a highly specialised group of individuals bringing specific skills and experience which allow visitors access to our Alpine National Parks areas.

The Falls Creek SES trains every Wednesday during the declared snow season. If you're interested in becoming a member, please contact David Etherton, Mb: 0408 210 345. •

SES Auction & BBQ

The SES Auction and BBQ was very successful. The crowd enjoyed the excellent food, the music of Ooz and the fun atmosphere of the auctions and raffles. Whilst there was perhaps a few less people than previous years, a near record amount of money was raised. A special thanks to the over sixty donors for their kind generosity which enabled such a great result.

Thanks to the Falls Creek and Mount Beauty communities and visitors that made the day such a success. Kind Regards, David Etherton, Falls Creek SES Unit Controller •

DISABLED WINTERSPORT AUSTRALIA

Fabulous Fun/d Raiser

Agreat week at DWA this week with Bec and Ayisha back on the snow this season with the family Jorja and Brett. The DWA team were so excited the see them back again and the sit skiing was fantastic. New Terrain and new skills were the order of the day with some great runs all around the available terrain. Bec, who has been a stand-up skier and only recently moved to the sit ski, was amazing as she made her first attempts independently sit skiing with outriggers.

The DWA guide helps with speed control from behind by tethering the ski with long nylon straps. Bec showed outstanding balance and control around the terrain at Falls Creek and will be back next year to challenge herself further.

Our Mt Hotham training team also joined us here to work through some new training plans, building some skills together and cross pollinate techniques and ideas. As our snowboarding members know, snowboard piloting our sit skis is a relatively new addition to the DWA skillset but is catching on rapidly. We had equal numbers of skiers and snowboarders out practicing new piloting skills on Sunday.

Our highlight of the week was to share our weekly fundraiser with Liana France. Liana is a sixteen year old Alpine Skier, a Falls Creek Winter local, member of Falls Creek Disabled Wintersports Australia, and Falls Creek Race Club athlete. She recently competed first FIS accredited Para

events held in Australia since 2013, with the conduct of the FIS Para Nationals at Perisher. Liana competed in five events across the Alpine disciplines of Slalom and Giant Slalom, winning gold in all five. She sat for her international FIS classification for her disability on the Monday (LW 6/8-2) which is an essential pre-cursor to competing in any international events, with the competition commencing on the Tuesday for three days.

“It was great to compete against the best in Australia in my first international Para competition. It is a step up in intensity from the Australian Interschools Competition held the week prior, in both the technical nature of the course and the experience of the field” said Liana “It was awesome to be able to mix with so many Paralympian’s, and to catch up with members of the Para High Performance Team who I trained with last year during a training camp conducted at Falls Creek. Achieving my international classification and competing in my first FIS Para Alpine events positions me well to qualify for the 2026 Paralympics in Milano-Cortina” she added. Liana has been invited to compete in Europe with the Para Alpine High Performance Team from December 2025 in the lead up to the games. “I am looking

forward to competing against other women within my classification, which is something that is limited in the southern hemisphere.”

“Travelling, training, and competing overseas is expensive” said Liana as she spoke about the DWA organised joint fundraiser held last Saturday at the Frying Pan Inn. “I would like to thank Disabled Wintersports Australia - Falls Creek for organising the raffle and auction, Traverse Alpine Group for hosting us at the Frying Pan Inn, and everyone who supported us by buying a raffle ticket, or bidding on the auction. I am so appreciative of everyone’s support, and it was a great night.”

If you would like to help support Liana get to the games, you can make a Tax Deductible donation through Australian Sports Foundation via the QR code below. All donations over $2 are Tax Deductable

Again, a massive shout out to our supporters and sponsors over the season. And thank you to both Attunga and Falls Creek Snowmobile tours for the very generous, additional auction items for our final fundraiser.

CROSS COUNTRY NEWS

Summer or Overseas?

Spring is well and truly here, and with it comes the bittersweet reminder that our ski season is drawing to a close. The snow is thinning, the days are warmer, and the tracks are showing more holes than glide. For those still eager to squeeze in a few more sessions on skis, time is running out.

With the rapidly softening snowpack, it is becoming common to walk sections of the trail before jumping onto your skis. If you are determined, you may still be able to find some good crust skiing in the mornings provided the temperature dips low enough overnight to firm things up. Be prepared though, a freeze is not guaranteed and what looks like a good surface early on can quickly turn to slush. If nothing else, getting out one last time is a chance to say farewell to winter before summer adventures take over.

Looking Ahead: World Loppet, World Masters and the Winter Olympics

While the local season is wrapping up, the international ski calendar is just beginning to heat up. For many of our skiers from Falls Creek, Mount Beauty and the surrounding communities, the northern hemisphere winter offers a string of opportunities to race, travel and experience skiing at its highest level.

One of the major events on the horizon is the Masters World Cup 2026, set to take

Saturday 20th to Sunday 28th Sept

Sat 20th, Sun 21st, Fri 26th & Sat 27th

Book online or call 03 5758 3282. Mountain views, friendly staff, reasonable prices & delicious food!

place in Sappada, Italy, from January 29 to February 6. This annual event brings together masters athletes from around the globe to compete, connect and celebrate their passion for cross-country skiing. For Australian masters, it is a chance to line up against international competition and showcase years of dedication on the world stage.

Alongside the Masters, the World Loppet series continues to inspire adventure. There are 20 races worldwide, each considered the premier long-distance ski event in its country. Our very own Kangaroo Hoppet is part of this series, linking Falls Creek to legendary races like Sweden’s Vasaloppet, Italy’s Marcialonga and Japan’s Sapporo Ski Marathon. For skiers dreaming of a northern hemisphere trip, planning a World Loppet adventure can be as much about the travel and culture as the skiing itself. You can see the full calendar and learn more about the series at worldloppet.com.

And of course, the pinnacle event for any skier is the Winter Olympics. In 2026, Val di Fiemme in Italy will host the crosscountry skiing and ski mountaineering events as part of the Milano-Cortina Games. For Australia’s top athletes, this will be a chance to line up against the best in the world and continue building our nation’s presence on snow. It is an exciting time to be following Australian skiing, and we will all be cheering from afar.

For those who want to stay in the loop, the Falls Creek XC Skiing & Touring Facebook group is the place to go for updates, race reports and news from our athletes overseas. If you would like to watch the action unfold live, check out Ski Classics Play (SC Play). The platform streams many of the World Loppet and long-distance races live or ondemand, so you can watch from your couch or even your phone anytime.

End of Season Care: Wax Your

Skis for Storage

As we pack away the skis for another year, it is important to give your gear some care before stashing it in the shed or garage. A little preparation now can save frustration later, whether you are pulling your skis out next June or taking them abroad this summer.

Here are a few simple steps to follow:

• Clean your skis – Spring snow can leave bases dirty with gum trees, dirt and sticky klister residue. Wipe your skis down with a wax remover or base cleaner, paying attention to both the bases and the tops. Let them dry for about 30 minutes, then give them a final brush to prep the surface.

• Apply wax – This is not the time to be sparing. Hot wax the bases with a generous coat, using any wax you have on hand. Keep the iron moving to avoid damaging the base and follow the temperature guide on your wax packet. Do not scrape the wax off, leave it on thick for protection.

• Store correctly – Skis last longest when kept in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Avoid hot sheds or garages where possible.

Taking a little extra time now ensures your skis are protected and ready to glide when you next jump on, whether that is here at Falls Creek in 2026 or on an overseas adventure in the months ahead.

WORDS FOR SNOW

A Touch of Background

You’ve probably heard or read somewhere that there are over 400 words for snow. What you may not know is that the quantity of words for snow really depends on the language you are speaking and the criteria used, such as whether to include compound words, different forms of snow, or even the weather itself. For instance, the Scottish language has 421 distinct words related to snow, while the Sámi languages have 180 to 300 snow-related terms

Words for snow include descriptive terms like flurry, powder, blizzard, and sleet, as well as specific types such as graupel, firn, sastrugi, and mank. Other related words describe different states or forms of snow. Many people know what the words blizzard, flurry, slush & sleet mean in the context of snow. But what about firn or rime?

At the end of the June/July school holidays the Falls Creek Race Club sent out a newsletter,

wrapping up the holiday programs. This is nothing out of the ordinary, Falls Creek Race Club has been doing this for decades. What struck me though was the use of the word rime to describe the precipitation on the snow gums. I’d never heard of ‘rime’. So I looked it up.

Pronounced /raim/ in the UK, the word Rime in English is a noun meaning frost. The Cambridge Dictionary defines Rime as ‘frost, the thin, white layer of ice that forms when the air temperature is below the freezing point of water, especially outside at night. For example: • The windows were wet where the rime had melted.

The word Rime can also be used as a verb, for example in the third person present: rimes; cover (an object) with hoar frost. • "he does not brush away the frost that rimes his beard"

To be honest, Wikipedia provides a definition that is more relatable to the day and age we live in.

Rimed snow refers to snowflakes that are

partially or completely coated in tiny frozen water droplets called 'rime'. Rime forms on a snowflake when it passes through a supercooled cloud. Snowflakes that are heavily rimed typically produce very heavy and wet snow, with snow to liquid ratios in the 5-1 to 9-1 range.

As spring slowly rolls forward and we begin the process of saying goodbye to our favourite form of frozen precipitation, here is a list of common and uncommon words for snow to cool our hearts between the end of this year's snow season and the beginning of the next.

• Extensive grocery range

• Bottle shop: beer, wine, spirits

• Fresh fruit and vegetables

• Hot pies and sausage rolls

• Heat and eat meals

• Phone re-charge

• ATM

• Newspapers and magazines

• Blizzard: A severe, long-lasting snowstorm with high winds.

• Flurry: Light, occasional snowfall.

• Powder: Fresh, unconsolidated, fluffy snow crystals.

• Sleet: Rain mixed with snow.

• Slush: Partially melted, sloppy snow.

• Crud: an unpredictable, rough, and uneven snow surface that forms after powder has been tracked out, featuring a mix of soft powder, hard pack, ice, and piled-up snow.

• Corn: snow composed of large, rounded, kernel-like crystals, formed through repeated cycles of melting and refreezing, typically in the spring.

• Graupel: Small, styrofoam-like pellets of frozen water that fall from the sky.

• Firn: Old glacial snow that has survived summer melting but is not yet true ice.

• Névé: Refrozen glacial snow, younger than firn.

• Crust: A hard layer of snow, often formed by melt-freeze cycles or wind.

• Mank: Unpleasant, crud-like snow that is often found after skiing or other use.

• Rime: Snowflakes coated in tiny frozen water droplets.

WORDS FOR SNOW

• Sastrugi: Irregular ridges and grooves in the snow's surface formed by wind.

• Snowdrift: Snow blown into a pile by the wind.

• Snirt: A mixture of snow and dirt.

Your Ed could add one more to this list ‘Elephant Snot’ – bit warm, bit sticky and definitely not fun to ski on – but it is a term that has been used on more than one occasion. Thanks to Nyree from ‘I Dream of Snow’ for providing some interesting detail and adding to our knowledge of our industry. •

Comfortable Skiing

Recently our nine year-old, lined up for his very first cross-country ski race. Five waves back, skates on, poles in hand, he was buzzing. Then - sixty metres after the start line - clunk. One pole hit the snow and was gone – wrist straps were too loose – big parent fail there.

He had a split second to decide: turn back and lose precious time or keep pushing with just one pole. Stone-cold he charged on for 3km with one pole. He powered

up hills and fought his way forward with ¾ of the gear. He crossed the line second. Amazing.

We couldn’t have been prouder for him just going in it. But his grit was very impressive. Coming second – cherry on top for him. But… what if he’d had both poles? That’s the difference between okay equipment and great gear. Okay will get you across the line. Great lets you perform at your peak.

It’s the same with ski boots. “Reasonably comfy” is okay. But a boot that’s custom fit to your foot? That’s great. That’s control, comfort, and the confidence to ski all day without even thinking about your feet. Custom boots aren’t just about reducing pain. They’re not just about improving performance. They’re about getting the most out of YOUR skiing. Making your days on the slopes the best they can be. Don’t settle for okay. Get great.
