We are introducing new sections with a focus on Architecture on Film, Defender and The Artist On Film alongside our favourite sections such as Irish Cinema, World Cinema, Peripheral Visions, Generation and What The Fleadh?!

With the 35th edition of the festival in July, we are keen to look back at films that have shaped the Galway Film Fleadh over the years while also focusing on the themes that current film makers are shaping into stories for the screen. Galway Film Fleadh

Festival highlights include:

The Martini Shot - World Premiere

Filmed in Ireland and directed by Stephen Wallis, this drama follows an ailing movie director as he begins to shoot what he believes to be his final work of art. What starts out as a normal movie, ends up being an exploration of mortality and one’s profound effect on the world. Starring Matthew Modine, John Cleese and Derek Jacobi.

Festival highlights continued...

Mutt - Irish Premiere

Director Vuk Lungulov-Klotz’s debut film, Mutt, is a poignant LGBTQIA+ story about Feña, a young trans guy bustling through life in New York City, who is faced with an increasingly challenging day. In the span of 24 hours, Feña must navigate the challenges of reconnecting with his foreign father, straight ex-boyfriend, and 13-year-old half-sister while also facing the daily struggles that come with living in a society that struggles to understand his identity.

I Like Movies - Irish Premiere

If you love videos, you will love this film! I Like Movies, Chandler Levack’s directorial debut is a coming-of-age story about teenage cinephile Lawrence Kweller who dreams of attending film school. In order to raise the hefty tuition fee, he gets a job at the local video store. As graduation looms ever closer, Lawrence faces some painful realisations about himself.

Lies We Tell - World Premiere

In an isolated manor, an orphaned heiress must fight her guardian for her inheritance - and her life. Directed by Lisa Mulcahy, Lies We Tell is a contained psychological thriller about a gaslit girl’s break for freedom. Stripped-down, gritty, and all-too-contemporary: this is not a frocks-and-bonnets period picture but a taut, propulsive, fight to the death.

Apocalypse Clown - World Premiere

From director George Kane, Apocalypse Clown follows a troupe of failed clowns as they embark on a chaotic road trip of self-discovery after a mysterious solar event plunges the world into anarchy. They will meet for a final clown show proving that the end of the world can also be a funny business.

A Greyhound of A Girl - Irish Premiere

Family animation, A Greyhound of a Girl, follows Mary who is 11 years old, loves to cook and dreams of becoming a great chef. Her beloved grandmother, Emer, encourages her to make this dream come true. Enzo d’Alò’s animated adaptation of Roddy Doyle’s novel is a delicate coming-of-age story, sprinkled with irony. With a cast that includes Brendan Gleeson, Sharon Horgan, Rosaleen Linehan and Charlene McKenna.

Introducing the proper Irish Chippí

As they hit a major milestone in their story, the iconic Galway chip cones are undergoing a fresh rebrand, complete with delicious new flavours and new merch. While the team behind it are only beginning to enter the next stage in their journey, Chippí is already en route to becoming a household name.

With ‘Prátaí’ (as Chippí was formerly known), brothers Joe and Barney Gaughan began to carve out their own niche in the world-famous Galway food scene. 100% sourced and sauced in Ireland, Joe tells us; “The biggest reason we got into what we do was that chippers don’t use Irish potatoes. That was a huge driving factor for us.” Driven by the idea to create something unique using only quality Irish ingredients, Chippí is a fresh take on the Irish chip shop.

Their rebrand is an opportunity for them to settle into their home on Shop Street, while simultaneously introducing brand new sauces and merchandise. Barney tells us; “We loved ‘Prataí’ but it just never really fit. It didn’t fit us, it’s a little bit serious and Chippí is fun, light and sometimes we feel we have to explain what Prataí means whereas Chippí explains itself.”

On top of offering all your favourite sauces, the new menu also features some notable newcomers including; the Chippí salt and vinegar mayo sauce, a spicy bravas sauce and a new recipe for the popular garlic aioli sauce perfected with wild Irish garlic. Alongside this, you can shop their retail space for Chippí merchandise, t-shirts, tote bags and homemade sauces.

“It hits you as you chat about it,” Barney says; “how less than two years ago, this was all being done out of a kitchen and now the building that we are in was our dream building five or six years ago”. Joe adds; “To see people walking up shop street with our cones, you have to pinch yourself almost because years ago that is what we imagined.”

While Chippí has already achieved so much, they are by no means slowing down. Keep your eyes out for their food truck at this year’s GIAF’s Festival Garden and visit them either at their chip shop at 27 Thimble Castle, Shop Street or in O’Connell’s Bar beer garden (voted the best in Galway). With loads more plans in the works and a global initiative in the pipeline, Barney perfectly sums up their next move saying; “The potential of Chippí is limitless.“

Gráinne Mullins A sweet tooth for success

Propelled by an entrepreneurial spirit and her innate desire for success, Gráinne Mullins has spent the last few years cultivating her dream business into a reality. As the founder and owner of Grá Chocolates, she’s brought inspiration with a touch of sweetness to Galway.

First opening Grá Chocolates in 2020, Gráinne has continuously met challenges head on with perseverance, and in doing so has grown the Galway-based business into what it is today.

Grá Chocolates kicked off in the midst of the pandemic. Gráinne found herself in a position that many of us are eerily familiar with. Confined to her family home, stuck in the suspended disbelief of day-to-day life. Here, she turned towards her own solace; baking. “One thing I made [were] easter eggs for friends and families as a treat…I realised there was this demand for them. People were reaching out and wanted to purchase them. I thought this could be my business.”

The chocolates are unique in flavour and production, taking three days to complete a single batch. “We make luxury hand painted chocolates made with the finest quality ingredients,” says Gráinne. “So with the best quality chocolates and local Irish ingredients wherever possible.”

Grá Chocolates are available for purchase on their website, as well in some select Brown Thomas stores. “We had built up a really great relationship with Brown Thomas. We were able to continue to grow in that relationship.” This success would not be possible without the foundations that Gráinne has spent years fostering. Gránne is an award winning pastry chef, and has spent years training and nurturing her passion.

Gráinne was recently named on Forbes Magazine’s 30 under 30 list. “I couldn’t believe it… I had to read [the email] four times before it actually sunk in.. it’s just been incredible.”

An integral part of her success is the self-belief in her own goals and aspirations. “I think my motto is to dream it, believe it, achieve it…things like success don’t come easy. It does require sacrifice. But it will all be worth it.” This true conviction has carried her far, and continues to support the growth of Grá Chocolates. With an impressive three years under Grá Chocolate’s belt, our grá for this Galway business only continues to grow.

JESS MURPHY’S

galway food stories

MULLING ABOUT WITH ADAM MULLINS

I heard about Adam via a pal Lillymae, who was telling me about this wonderful start up - The Student Pantry. I just thought what an amazing idea, thinking it had been set up by an Irish mammy/modern day parent hero mythical creature that I had drummed up in my head. Surprise surprise, it was in fact set up by a budding astrophysicist called Adam Mullins from Donegal, with the help of FoodCloud & a lot of other legendary volunteers from the University of Galway. Golden rule: when you start to complain about our current day young wans, never underestimate the amazing thoughtful, beautiful & powerful humans they become… Please enjoy this, Namaste Jess Murphy.

J. Tell me about the student pantry. How did it get going?

A. I’m from Donegal originally and I have grown up in a community workspace my whole life, my nana was a manager of the community centre and then my mom became one and she had the idea to launch the initiative of what we are doing now - a Community Pantry. There are other charities that will receive food, for homeless people or for different causes like that, whereas we were receiving it to redirect it to anybody who wanted it. In terms of food waste, this is one; going to save them money. And two; everything would be going in the bin otherwise.

Then, I moved to Galway and I was here for a year and I said; ‘Jesus mom, I’m in the city and I just know there’s nothing like what we’re doing back at home down here and it’s all going in the bin and it’s ridiculous!’ We’re in a city where it’s hustle and bustle, things are moving forward but it’s not moving forward at all. So I asked; is there a way I could do what we do at home at the college? And she said, that is actually a great idea, we should look into it!

17

J. Yeah, people are going to college and are starving.

A. It’s ridiculous. I figured that if I’m paying 3.5 grand to college, I shouldn’t have to then pay to avail of a service within the college. So something I always worked towards was that it has to be free and that’s how it is. At the moment, it’s just students showing up and they get their food for free.

J. What stories have you heard? We’ve all heard of starving students, so the pantry must be beneficial to everybody, especially considering Galway rent.

A. Yeah, it is crazy. In the last few years it’s gone up and up and up, making it more difficult for students. There’s a lot of students who come to us and say, this will be the first proper meal I’ve had this week and stuff like that. Or they’ll discuss the fact, they were scraping by until they started coming to this and now they can save up for whatever they might need.

J. What’s the collection process like? Do you drive to a supermarket and they have a pallet ready for you?

A. I get a text. I’ll click to accept that and then I will go and drive up to that shop later on, go into their back door where their lorry would usually drop off their food and ring their doorbell. And then someone comes and it’s here’s your box or boxes of food. Typically, we receive a pallet every week from the FoodCloud Warehouse in Galway and that usually ranges between 200kg and 500kg. Throughout the week, depending on how good the collections are, I could collect anywhere between 400kg and 800kg of food. So, we get through a load of food and we aim toward zero waste. In terms of whatever good (quality) food we get, we very rarely have any leftovers at the end of the day.

J. That’s amazing! Obviously it’s so beneficial for students as well because we have learnt that there’s a correlation between being hungry and learning...

A. Oh and depression or malnutrition and stuff like that. Even if they’re not hungry because they’re eating loads of pasta, they could still be really struggling because they’re not getting the vitamins and nutrients they need. So we aim to really try and say, look, this food is here, I know you might not love carrots but why don’t you have your carrots tonight as well? Just to add a bit more variation to your diet.

J. Is the Student Pantry in the University of Galway?

A. Yes. We’re in the handover process at the moment because we initially had zero funding, and I spent about €5000 of my own money last year on fuel and expenses to keep it up and running. As of this year, the society’s office within the university said, ‘we want to back you in whatever way possible’, so they bought the fridges and freezers, and they let me work in their space. At the moment, that’s what I’m still using, but the Student’s Union and the university are retrofitting a room within the university which will become the Student Pantry for the rest of its existence and it’ll have all built-in fridges and freezers, and store shelves and everything we need.

Student Pantry Granola ingredients

3 cups old-fashioned oats

2/3 cup nuts (such as peanuts, sliced almonds, chopped pecans, or a mix)

1/3 cup natural smooth peanut butter

1/4 cup honey

3 tablespoons melted coconut oil

2 teaspoons vanilla extract

3/4 teaspoon sea salt

1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon

optional: 1/3 cup unsweetened flaked coconut

optional: 1/3 cup semisweet chocolate chips

optional: sliced fruit (bananas, strawberries, etc.)

directions

1. Heat oven to 325°F. Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper.

2. Combine oats and nuts in a large mixing bowl. Set aside.

3. In a separate bowl, stir together the peanut butter, honey, coconut oil, vanilla, salt and cinnamon. Heat briefly in the microwave (for 20-30 seconds) or in a small saucepan (over medium heat for 3-4 minutes) until warm, but not bubbly. Stir again until smooth.

4. Pour the peanut butter mixture over the oats mixture, and stir until evenly combined.

5. Spread the granola out evenly on the prepared baking sheet. Bake for 25 minutes, stirring once halfway through, and keeping an eye on the granola to ensure that it doesn’t burn. Remove the pan from the oven, sprinkle the coconut on top, and give the mixture a good stir. Bake for 4-5 more minutes, or until the granola is lightly toasted and golden.

6. Remove from the oven and transfer to a wire baking rack. Let the granola cool until it reaches room temperature. Then stir in the chocolate chips (if using), and any other optional add-ins you might prefer.

7. Serve immediately, or store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 1 month.

Pear Tree Café Bistro & Wine Bar

Pear Tree Café Bistro & Wine Bar

Inspired by the cultural significance of the simple pear tree as a symbol of longevity, divine sustenance and abundance. The name Pear Tree Café, Bistro and Wine Bar was the perfect fit for Chef Laura Rosso and her partner Lucas’ next adventure.

20

Located on Upper Salthill Rd, The Pear Tree Café, Bistro and Wine Bar, was created with three core principles of care - for the earth, for people and for fair trade. Open daily from 9am, the café welcomes everyone from sea swimmers and prom walkers to holidaymakers, and employees on their lunch break. Alongside tasty offerings of homemade pastries and speciality SOMA coffee, visitors can also enjoy artisan sourdough loaded toasties, fresh fruit juices, and toasted sandwiches.

Launching in time for those long summer evenings, their new neighbourhood wine bar is already making itself known as the place to be this June/July. With the option of seating both indoors and outdoors, the gorgeous wine bar that Laura and Lucas have created offers a unique and wholesome experience to all its guests. It is a welcoming space where people can come, relax among good company, enjoy live music, and taste loads of delicious wines, and cheese and charcuterie boards.

The menu focuses on organic, biodynamic and natural wines and even includes wines that have been made grape-free, such as the Wicklow Way Wines’ raspberry, strawberry and blackberry wines. Catering to everyone from the experienced wine drinker to the novice, this wine list thoughtfully includes details of how each wine is made and the individual qualities that makes them unique. This is to guarantee all guests feel confident to try new wines, as Laura and Lucas explain; “We put these details on the menu to help people feel comfortable. In the beginning we were not big wine drinkers and it was uncomfortable to go somewhere and have no one explain anything to us. We felt stupid and we don’t want that to happen in our place.” They continue; “We want to make everyone feel comfortable enough to come here. It’s for everyone, not just the experienced wine drinker.” If you are still reluctant to dive fully into the world of wines, they also have a selection of beers available; however, we highly recommend giving the wine list a chance - you won’t be disappointed!

To make a reservation for the wine bar, contact them at 083 352 5186 or thepeartreecafebistro@ gmail.com and stay updated with all their latest news and opening times at; www.instagram.com/ thepeartreecafebistro/.

Sweet Summer Serenades

Swelling with mirth, magic, and music… Welcome to the bustling streets of a Galway summer. This spectacular sight is made complete by those huddled on shop corners and cobblestone, singing hymnals to gather onlookers and sometimes loose change. Striking a resonant and nearly hallowed chord amongst passersby, Galway’s street performers hold a lofty significance in the city’s landscape. We had the opportunity to speak with a few of Galway’s well-known buskers. Here they share insight, perspective, and the essence of why Galway holds such sway in the realm of self-expression and song.

Katie O’Connor; On the serendipitous spirit of busking

For Katie O’Connor, music is a source of solace that acts as an abiding companion on life’s path. She possesses a sharp sense of self that undoubtedly melds with the crowd around her. Katie is often found on Shop Street playing sweet and sombre singer-songwriter tunes. Intertwining meditative practices within performance, Katie cherishes the spontaneity that is borne through busking. “Everyday is just a beautiful moment and that’s what I love about busking… there’s this magic that’s happening in the world, and when you move with it, you get to be part of it.”

Tangerine Parking Lot; Why good things come in threes

The buskers of Galway are often fueled by a sense of observance and a rich passion for performance. Among the musicians embodying these qualities is the three piece band, Tangerine Parking Lot. Composed of Aoibhín Twomey, Siofra McGuire, and Naima Baker, Tangerine Parking Lot brings a youthful and distinctive presence to the streets of Galway. With the bustle and energy of Shop Street as backdrop, the three piece band perform covers of songs ranging from Kate Bush to The Beatles. “It’s kinda nice because we do get into a zone after a while,” says Siofra. With instruments reflecting an eclectic nature - a double bass, cello and a ukulele - the band is an unforgettable mark of Galway’s landscape. For Tangerine Parking Lot, Three is the magic number.

Macdara O’Dwyer; How busking keeps things level

One of Galway’s distinguished and impassioned buskers is Macdara O’Dwyer. On the stoops of Shop Street, he sings a balanced mix of acoustic covers as well as original singer-songwriter ballads. Here, he reflects on the accessible nature of performance that busking provides. Not only is busking a platform for aspiring artists, but it also brings music directly to an audience with no barriers or distinct distances. “You have a direct link and interaction with your audience. Which is non-existent everywhere else.” This connection is nurtured by Galway’s buskers who strive to keep the experience as level and accessible as possible, buskers like Macdara.

Celebration of song has always been an integral component of Galway’s culture. The musicians mentioned in this feature are just a handful of the talented artists that make up the buskers of Galway. As distinctive as they are talented, these are members of the community who strive to preserve a love for performance and music. As the sun shines down on Galway these spirited summer days, spend some time strolling through the city and supporting the local buskers!

Walsh’s Bakery

A family run establishment at the heart of Clifden town, Walsh’s Bakery has an outstanding 70 years of experience in their craft. Their passion and commitment to high quality, homemade products shines through in everything they accomplish.

Walsh’s Bakery has been providing the West of Galway with heavenly handcrafted breads, baked goods, confectionery and hot deli food for the best part of a century. Founded in 1953 by Tom and Una Walsh, with the help of their seven children their small bakery gradually evolved into a landmark bakery and shop in Connemara. As the bakery’s 70th anniversary approaches, Walsh’s Bakery continues to thrive under the leadership of Tom and Una’s son Cathal, his wife, Joan, and daughter, Róisín.

A family business through and through, Cathal tells us; “We have a family network and we try to involve those who have been with us for such a long time working as a total family fabricthat’s crucial to what we do.” Calling attention to the support and hard work of his wife Joan, his mother, his siblings, and the staff they worked alongside throughout the years, Cathal continues; “To have the product that we have, to do what we’re doing and to be able to keep it going the way we are, is a testament to all of them.“ This September, they would be delighted if you joined them in marking their monumental milestone of 70 years in business at a special celebration. Details will be announced closer to the time, stay tuned.
