BUILDING COMMUNITY THROUGH CONVERSATION

Photos by Ciarán MacChoncarraige

On a cosy couch in her living room overlooking Henry Street, Lisa Regan leans back, her beautiful little dog Toby happily padding around before settling on a cushion between us. The space feels warm and inviting, comfortable, lived-in, and the perfect backdrop for conversation.

When you speak with Lisa, you won’t just hear a story about PR, journalism, or business, you’ll hear a story deeply rooted in human connectivity. Lisa’s openness has shaped her career and her outlook. From starting out as a junior reporter at the Galway Independent, to running her own communications company for the last 15 years, she has always leaned into the power of authentic relationships. Her interest in current and political affairs, pop culture and sports led her naturally into PR, but what keeps her there is deeper: “At the back of it all, I love storytelling, language, and I really enjoy working with people.”

Travel is a big part of her life. From living in New York, and spending time in LA, Australia, and New Zealand, to hiking the Camino, Lisa thrives on new experiences and meeting new people. Yet, Galway remains her grounding place. Its sense of quiet, combined with Galway’s size and intimacy, has allowed her to build both business and community ties. Some clients she’s worked with for years, forming relationships that have become more than transactional. “I’ve had gorgeous relationships with most of my clients. Even when business ends, the personal connection remains.”

Page 5 | Lisa Regan

One of Lisa’s most refreshing qualities is how much she champions showing up for life, whether that’s art, culture, or community events. “People say to me, ‘God, how did you know that was on?’ And I’m just like, I seek out enjoyment. I want to have a good time, and I want to go to things. That’s what I love about art and culture and shows, you can go to all of those things on your own. So you don’t have to be under this impression ‘I have no one to go with’ - just go on your own! You’ll listen, you’ll meet someone, you’ll talk to the person beside you. You don’t have to wait for someone to come with you.” For her, living fully means embracing those experiences, whether going solo or with others. “There’s endless opportunities to enjoy life and you shouldn’t be held back by feeling like you need to do them with other people.”

She’s also deeply thoughtful about the ways technology affects us today. “I read this thing recently and it was a survey of 500 people (mainly women) asking - ‘What do you do in the evenings?’ - over 98% said, we watch something and we scroll on our phones. And I thought, wow, that is modern society. You’re never really committed to anything - you’re not committed to the phone, you’re not committed to the show and I don’t think we realise the long effects of what the phone is doing to us.” What restores us, she counters, are the little things - our simple, human interactions: “Going for a walk with a friend. Chatting with a neighbour for ten minutes. Saying hello to someone on the street. Those are the things that make us feel good.”

It is that appreciation for real and authentic connection which is at the heart of her

latest project, launching this November 10th in Dublin with her friend, social scientist and comedian Kate Feeney. “We’re trialing something in November, a new kind of meetup on how to connect better. Not networking in the hustle sense, but when you go to things, whether it’s the gym, or something for work, that you go there and feel as confident as you can, and how the facilitators can make that easier for people.”

This involves quite simple but surprisingly impactful steps: moving people around the room, asking light but meaningful questions, and creating a relaxed atmosphere where everyone feels seen.

“At the crux of it is a bit of levity, taking people out of their heads, and helping them meet people where they’re at. It’s networking more intelligently, but it’s not about career gains. It’s about curiosity, being interested in the world, and being present with one another.”

Lisa’s story, ultimately, is not just about PR, business, or even Galway, it’s about the magic that happens when people come together. Whether she’s working with local businesses, cheering on the arts, or creating new ways for people to talk to one another, her ethos is the same: show up, be authentic, and value conversations with others. “I definitely think that human connection… is crucial for the sense of place in yourself and where you live.” And, well, in a world of constant noise, that is something worth remembering.

Bookshop is celebrating its 85th birthday. Founded on High Street in 1940 by Des and Maureen Kenny, the bookshop has been a cultural cornerstone of the city ever since, welcoming generations of readers, writers, and artists through its doors.

For Sarah Kenny, part of the third generation working in the shop, the anniversary feels deeply personal. “As it’s a family business, it always feels very special when a big milestone comes around. I think my grandparents would be so proud to see it where it is today,” she says. Growing up, she and her cousins spent countless hours among the shelves, doing homework in corners, attending events, fully immersed in the world of books. “It’s such a huge and important part of my heritage,” Sarah reflects.

That heritage includes not just selling books, but celebrating writers. Over the decades, Kennys has hosted some of the most celebrated names in Irish literature. In 1987, after receiving a personal invite from Maureen, Roald Dahl spent two days signing copies of Matilda and his other books, drawing such crowds of all ages that queues lined the street.

Famed Irish poet, Seamus Heaney was a close friend of the shop, fondly dubbing Maureen Kenny “the Madonna of the Manuscripts.” And more recently, Kennys has hosted launch events for authors like Colum McCann, Graham Norton, Donal Ryan, and Elaine Feeney. “We are blessed in Ireland with such a high quality of writing and literary output from our authors.” Sarah says. “Some of the best writers in the world come from this country, and it makes us very proud to promote them.”

The shop’s walls reflect that history. Photographs of visiting authors line the space, creating a visual archive of the literary figures who have come to Galway and left their mark. For many readers, the chance to meet beloved writers in such an intimate setting is unforgettable.

Alongside these events, Kennys finds ways of connecting readers with the right book through tailored recommendations and their personalised book hampers which are filled with books handpicked by their staff. It’s that personal touch, Sarah explains, that sets local bookshops apart.

The impact of Kennys travels far, its website, Kennys.ie, is the oldest online bookshop in the world and ships books to nearly 80 countries every year, with free delivery within Ireland. Their success lies in blending tradition with innovation, embracing online sales while keeping the warmth of personal service alive.

It’s that impact of when people choose to shop locally, they’re not just buying a book - they’re supporting community spaces, local jobs, and Irish publishers, while existing as a space where people can gather, discover something new, and feel part of a wider literary world.

But Kennys’ story isn’t just about its books. In 1968, Maureen and Des converted their own living room in Salthill into an art gallery (the first in the West of Ireland) so that exhibitions could finally have their own space. The very first exhibition was by artist Seán Keating, and hundreds have followed since. Today, The Kenny Gallery remains a vibrant companion to the bookshop, drawing in art lovers from near and far.

As Kennys Bookshop turns 85 on November 29th, it’s a celebration of family, literature, and community, proof that in a fast-changing world, stories and the spaces that nurture them will always matter.

Visit Kennys Bookshop & Art Gallery in Liosbán Industrial Retail Park, Tuam Road, H91N5P8 or online kennys.ie and follow them on social media for more.

Tis the Season for Tiny Traders

As Christmas approaches, Galway is getting into the festive spirit, and for Paul David Murphy of Tiny Traders Village, that means bringing the community’s creative energy right into the heart of the city once again.

This year, the much-loved local market will return to its previous location in Edward Square and also have two pop ups in Eyre Square Shopping Centre from November 21st. It’s an exciting return for the team after a busy summer of outdoor events across the city. “It’s a brilliant location,” Paul says, smiling. “It’s great to be in one of Galway’s premier retail locations, close to Shop Street, across from Starbucks, beside Elverys, right in the mix of it all..”

While summer markets have a sun-soaked, festival feel, with tourists and buskers filling the streets, Paul says Christmas brings a different kind of magic. The summer markets are all about people shopping for themselves, but Christmas is about giving. People are thinking of others, they’re looking for something meaningful. That makes it special.

And meaningful is exactly what Tiny Traders Village offers. Every item sold in the market is handmade by local craftspeople; jewellers, candle-makers, artists, bakers, and creators of all kinds. “You can buy a gift anywhere,” Paul says, “but when you buy from someone who makes it with their own hands, you’re making two people happy, the person getting the gift, and the person you buy it off.”

This season’s market will feature a mix of beloved regular vendors and new traders, with sweet treats, coffee, and a warm, festive atmosphere. “We try to strike a balance between supporting the traders who already make their living here, so they can continue without interruption, and keeping our doors open to welcome new people. That’s something I’m really passionate about.”

That mix is something Paul feels deeply about. From a handful of stalls to a thriving grassroots collective with nearly 300 active traders, Tiny Traders Village has become much more than a market, it’s a launchpad for local entrepreneurs. “I’m proud of what it’s become. I think people in Galway have taken it as their own.” He adds, “We’re very lucky and very happy with the way the local community has embraced us.”

That sense of place runs deep. Tiny Traders has helped transform empty city spaces into buzzing community hubs, breathing new life into vacant units and showing how local creativity can thrive alongside big retail brands. “It shows people the world isn’t going to end if you let local crafters into your building,” Paul says. “It doesn’t have to be big multinationals all the time, that it can work if we give some local people a chance.”

At its core, though, Tiny Traders Village is about cultivating joy, something Paul believes you can feel the moment you walk in. “I believe at the base of a lovely atmosphere are happy people,” he says simply. “It is, you know, if everyone’s happy and everyone’s glad to be there, that creates a lovely atmosphere to begin with, and if everyone is smiling, it just raises the level of everything.”

This Christmas, as Galway comes alive with festive spirit, find one-of-a-kind gifts at the Tiny Traders’ Christmas Village and stay up-to-date on the latest news by following them on Instagram @tinytradersvillage.

Inside Carroll’s

If you want to know what a true Irish pub experience is really about, step inside Carroll’s on Dominick Street. It’s a spot that blends the old with the new, resulting in one of the most unique pubs in the entire city.

One of its biggest draws is its incredible trad music sessions. They’ve been hosting them since day one, and you’ll hear music echoing out its doors seven nights a week. These nightly sessions have attracted their own loyal following, with regulars frequently gathering at the bar, to the point where there’s even a back section affectionately dubbed the regulars’ bar.

Pow! gluten free lager and Bang Bang IPA, both of which got their start right here.

Continue through to the rear of the bar and Carroll’s becomes something else entirely. The space opens up to a sprawling beer garden, playfully nicknamed The Caravan Club, it is one of Galway’s most talked-about hangouts. It’s not just about the size (it’s huge!), but the eccentric setup: vintage caravans that have been converted into private nooks. These quirky little spaces are available to book for staff nights out, birthday bashes, even secondday wedding parties. Come Christmas, they’re in especially high demand, giving corporate Christmas parties a truly unforgettable backdrop. All bookings can be made by emailing Carroll’s at info@carrollsbar.ie.

Inside, Carroll’s is exactly what you want an Irish pub to be: full of character, atmosphere, and stories etched into the walls. You’ll spot vintage beer mats, old cash registers, and countless pieces of memorabilia collected over the years. And while the vibe is old-school, the drinks menu is anything but stuck in the past. You’ll find standard pints and delicious cocktails, alongside cult favourites Galway’s own Page 37 | Carroll’s Bar

At the centre of the Caravan Club is one of Galway’s most unique stages: a repurposed church organ that now doubles as a stage. From Thursday through Sunday, it hosts live gigs, adding a fresh energy to the pub’s already packed music calendar. Between the nightly sessions inside and the weekend shows outside, Carroll’s is really something special: it’s one of the few places in town

where you can catch live music every single day of the week.

But Carroll’s isn’t just about what’s in your glass, it’s also about what’s on your plate. Enter Lódid, the brand-new food venture that’s quickly making its mark. Head chef Charlie Walsh is steering the kitchen, turning out crowd-pleasers like hot dogs, loaded fries, nachos, and a handful of

hearty vegetarian options. The menu is still evolving, but the early word is promising: this is proper pub grub, the kind that keeps you fueled through an evening of tunes and pints.

And then there’s the setting. Lódid doesn’t live in just any ol’ food truck, it’s based inside Carroll’s very own Double Decker Bus. Parked permanently in the beer garden, the bus has been transformed into one of the quirkiest dining spaces in the city. Nearby, the Bar 13, a cocktail bar that opens when the crowds spill in later in the evening, helps to keep the good times flowing until close.

Since taking over as head of management just a few months ago, Paul Walsh has been the one leading the charge at Carroll’s, and his impact is already clear. From finetuning the food offering to keeping music at the heart of the pub, he’s made sure Carroll’s stays true to its roots while also giving it a fresh energy for a newer crowd.

In a city full of pubs, Carroll’s stands out by doing the simple things exceptionally well: live music every night, a space where locals and visitors mix, and a vibe that balances tradition with playful and youthful originality. Whether you’re in for a quiet pint by the regulars’ bar, a caravan club Christmas party, or to catch a show in the beer garden, visit it for yourself at 39 Dominick Street Lower, and for all bookings contact them at info@carrollsbar.ie.

Q. Tell us about yourself...

I’m Gordon McCrae, originally from Kinsale in Cork, and I’ve been part of the team at Garavan’s Bar for more than ten years. I’ve been known to pop up on TikTok every so often, usually wearing something ridiculous behind the bar. I love the buzz of the job, and when I get a break, my wife and I like to head off on a Caribbean cruise.

Q. What do you love about your job?

It’s a busy spot with great energy, and I’ve seen the place grow a lot over the years. I take pride in what I do and in being part of such a well-known Galway pub.

Q. What’s your favourite winter warmer?

My own mulled wine recipe. Back home in Cork, I used to do the Christmas morning swims to raise money for different charities, and we’d always have a hot mulled wine afterwards to warm up. Now I make my own in Garavan’s every year. It brings back good memories of those mornings and has become a nice little tradition here too.

Q. What’s your favourite thing to do in Galway at Christmas time?

When my family visits from Cork and Clare, we always go to the Christmas markets. I love the atmosphere, the lights, the music, and the crowd. I even went on the carousel horses once and had better fun than the kids! Galway at Christmas has a great buzz about it.

Q. Where’s one place you think everyone should visit in Galway?

The Cathedral. It’s a big part of Galway and means a lot to the city. It’s a beautiful place to visit, it’s very peaceful, and is somewhere that really shows the heart of Galway.

Q. Can you tell us about one of your highlights from 2025?

It’s hard to pick one! I celebrated 20 years of marriage this year, which was a big one. My mother turned 83, and my niece graduated from college. It’s been a good year all round.

Q. What does Christmas mean to you?

Family, friends, and a good dinner. I love making Christmas dinner and always make an extra plate for my Jack Russell, Mandy. It’s the one day of the year when everyone slows down a bit, sits together, and enjoys the day.

Q. Quick! You’re under the mistletoewho’s getting the shift?

My wife, obviously! If it were anyone else, I’d be in trouble.

Q. Tell us a secret…

The secret ingredient in my mulled wine is a drop of Port. Don’t knock it till you try it.

Q. If you could have one wish granted this Christmas, what would it be?

Just that family and friends have a happy, healthy Christmas and a good year ahead. That’s all I’d want.

This November, Galway transforms into a city-wide gallery as the TULCA Festival of Visual Arts returns for its 23rd edition. From 7th-23rd November, audiences are invited to explore “Strange lands still bear common ground,” a rich and imaginative exhibition journey curated by Beulah Ezeugo.

Taking inspiration from an anonymously drawn Burmese Map of the World, the festival explores how encounters between people, places, and histories can reorient understanding and open new possibilities of contact. “The festival explores themes of encounter, proximity, and place,” says curator Beulah Ezeugo, “inviting audiences to explore stories and perspectives with curiosity and openness.”

This year’s programme features 26 artists and collectives from Ireland and beyond, working across installation, film, performance, and sound. A major highlight of TULCA 2025 is its network of seven exhibition & gallery spaces, all free and open to the public throughout the festival’s run. These include this year’s main festival venue TULCA Gallery (Hynes Building, St Augustine Street), alongside Galway Arts Centre, 126 Artist-run Gallery, several University of Galway sites, as well as ATU Wellpark Road Library. The programme also extends internationally with a satellite exhibition in New York.

Over 25 events accompany the exhibitions, including artist talks, performances, workshops, and tours. Highlights include the Official Launch & Publication Launch (7 Nov, TULCA Gallery), Artist Talks Series with ATU (4, 11 & 18 Nov), Bint Mbareh: Tidal Memory (FLIRT FM, 13 & 20 Nov), Susannah Bolton’s live performance “Gam Thàladh” (13 Nov, O’Donoghue Centre), and Saoirse Amira Anis’s procession “rebreach of a fraying body” (15 Nov, O’Brien’s Bridge).

Festival tours include Curator’s Gallery Tours with Beulah Ezeugo (9 & 16 Nov, TULCA Gallery), Family-Friendly Tours (11-23 Nov), Language Tours: Irish, Japanese, and Brazilian Portuguese (11-23 Nov), and Community Group Tours (11-23 Nov), inviting locals, youth groups, and cultural organisations to engage with contemporary art.

With its blend of curiosity, critical thought, and creative energy, TULCA offers both a celebration and an invitation; to find common ground, even in the strangest of places. All exhibitions are free, with select events ticketed via tulca.ie, where audiences can find the full programme and booking links.

TULCA Festival of Visual Arts is supported by The Arts Council, Galway City Council, and Galway County Council.

Visit these Christmas Markets in County Galway

From the bustling craft fairs of Connemara to the cosy community markets dotted across East Galway, there will be tons of fantastic Christmas Markets popping up across Galway in the upcoming weeks. So grab your scarf, wrap up warm, and get ready to experience the charm, cheer, and creativity that makes the festive markets around County Galway so special. Here’s where you’ll find all kinds of merriment in the lead up to Christmas Day this year…

The festive fun begins early with fabulous markets lighting up the county. The Loughrea Craft & Gift Fair in Lough Rea Hotel & Spa on November 16th is a fabulous go-to for shopping with style, featuring local artisans, festive décor, and holiday vibes galore. Taking place that same day, Eddie Ned’s Bar & Lounge in Monivea will host their annual Christmas Market where local crafters, bakers, and artists gather for a morning of festive shopping and tasty treats.

On November 23rd, the Loughnane & Quinn Memorial Christmas Craft Fair in Labane Community Hall will be bursting with handmade crafts, art, and jewellery, perfect for finding that one-of-a-kind gift. That same day, Oughterard’s Christmas Market in the town’s community centre brings more than 40 stalls, fresh bakes, and a raffle with amazing prizes (and all for a good cause!). And, over in Mountbellew, the annual Christmas Market returns, giving shoppers plenty of time to stock up before December madness sets in.

The festive spirit continues at Ballyglunin Station’s Winter Wonderland (Nov 30th), with live music, twinkling lights, and a visit from Mr. & Mrs. Claus. Also on November 30th, Castleblakeney Village’s Christmas Market offers something for the whole family; food stalls, decorations, crafts and so much more! Meanwhile, the much-loved Oranmore Christmas Fair (Nov 29th & 30th) fills their community centre with local crafts, sweet treats, and joyful surprises.

By the time December rolls around, Galway’s Christmas scene truly comes alive. Kick off the month at the annual Glynsk House Christmas Market on December 4th, exploring stalls of unique presents, festive decorations, seasonal treats, and creative crafts, while Moylough Christmas Market (Dec 6th) fills the GAA Club with handmade gifts, food stalls, and holiday cheer. Slieve Aughty Centre (Dec 6-7th and 13-14th) in Loughrea transforms into a festive paradise with artisan stalls, hot drinks, and Santa visits (booking in advance advised!).

In South Galway, Kinvara’s Christmas Fair (Dec 6-7th) is always a highlight. Set in the heart of this lovely seaside village, it’s the perfect spot to browse seasonal gifts such as pottery, candles and more while enjoying sweet festive treats like Christmas cakes, handmade chocolates, mulled wine, and spiced apple juice.

For Caltra’s Christmas Market, ‘Stall in the Hall’ on December 7th, families can enjoy a magical day out, complete with crafts, food, and even a visit from Santa Claus!

Packed with everything that makes this season so special, make this Christmas one to remember at these Christmas markets.
