COMEDY FESTIVAL 2025

Ireland’s biggest comedy bash returns from Tuesday 21 to Monday 27 October. Tickets now on sale at
Galway Comedy Festival is back, and it’s shaping up to be an absolute sensation. Yet again, the organisers have fought tooth and nail to bring you the cream of comedy talent this October. While their outstanding line-up of 70+ artists will perform in 16 venues across Galway City & County, the centre of activity will be Pálás Cinema. That’s pretty big news, right?
But not as big as the list of international comedy stars winging their way west this October Bank Holiday. Right now, they don’t come much bigger Paul Smith. This cheeky Liverpudlian has already sold out, but you should definitely put your name down for any cancellations.

Welsh comedy wizard Rhod Gilbert is also putting bums on seats in Leisureland, and Persian powerhouse Omid Djalili makes a very welcome return to Galway, kicking off the entire week of hilarity with his critically acclaimed new show NAMASTE in the Town Hall Theatre.
Also Galway-bound are Festival favourites Rich Hall, Phill Jupitus & Glenn Wool - and you’ll also spot some big names from the small screen in the form of Chris McCausland & Jack Dee.
Jack Dee’s new show, Small World, does not involve the following: CULTURE WARS, THE ENVIRONMENT, BRITISH FOREIGN POLICY and SOCIAL JUSTICE. In fact, these are just a few of the topics that Jack spectacularly fails to address (or even mention, for that matter) in his brand new show. Join Jack as he guides you through his varied life and career with his customary charm and well-known gift for talking absolute rubbish on any given subject.
Ireland has always been noted for producing some of the English language’s finest comedians (and all of the Irish language ones). This year’s long list of homegrown heavy hitters is headed by Dylan Moran This BAFTA and Perrier awardwinning comedian is bringing his brand new stand-up show ‘DOLLA HO’ to Galway with choice servings of his thoughts on everything
and anything - delivered with his trademark poetic panache.
Dylan’s fellow compatriots include: Ireland’s Queen of Comedy Deirdre O’Kane, Andrew Maxwell, Al Porter, David McSavage & Barry Murphy; as well as rapidly rising stars Aoife Dunne & Rachel Galvo.
Deirdre O’ Kane has succeeded as a stand-up, actor, and podcaster, and can be seen at an array of mixed bill shows (and maybe, just maybe a Late Night KARLnival) as well as a live recording of her Keep It Tight podcast with Emma Doran. Emma’s star has risen rapidly in recent years, placing her among the top tier of modern Irish comics. Her new show, Emmaculate, at the Town Hall Theatre is already sold out, but Galway fans can still catch her on mixed bills and that live recording of Keep It Tight.
Two of the most exciting new names in Irish comedy are Rachel Galvo and Aoife Dunne. Rachel took her two passions - Feminism and Comedy, and pretty soon was taking audiences across Ireland and Britain by storm. Galway’s Aoife Dunne might call herself an “absolute dose”, but it’s a dose audiences cannot get enough of, with sell-out success at Edinburgh Fringe.

The aforementioned Pálás Cinema is poised to deliver supreme comfort and style, across three deluxe rooms. And what a line-up at Pálás: Mixed bill shows featuring Dylan Moran, Glenn Wool, Danny O’Brien, Aoife Dunne, and Aaron Berg; solo stand-up with Kai Humphries, Micky Bartlett, and Aideen McQueen; as well as burlesque, comedy, and cabaret, with a special Halloween edition of The Dirty Circus.
Podcast fans will also be making Pálás their venue of choice during #GCF25 with live recordings of The Creep Dive with Sophie White, Jen O’Dwyer & Cassie Delaney; and How to Gael with Doireann Ní Ghlacáin, Louise Cantillon & Síomha Ní Ruairc. Speaking of the Irish language, the cinema will also host Gaire as Gaeilge, a night of comedy in our native tongue, hosted by the irrepressible Hector Ó hEochagáin.
Perhaps most exciting of all is that Pálás becomes the new venue for GCF’s wildest and most unmissable institution - the Late Night KARnival. With Karl Spain at the helm, this is the show where comedians perform their darker, edgier material - and you never know who will turn up on the night.
As the home of comedy in the west, Róisín Dubh is the location for an array of solo shows & mixed bills from Rich Hall, Rachel Galvo, Paddy McDonnell & The Improv All Stars. Revellers can also close out their nights in Róisín Dubh with live bands & club nights at the Bulmers Festival Club - including Silent Disco, Steve n’ Seagulls, John Conneely Inc. & Brogeal.
If you like a bit of variety, this year’s extravaganza features much more than stand-up, including classic sitcom events like Faulty Towers: The Dining Experience and the Stars of Father Ted. It also offers Irish language comedy with Hector’s Gaire as Gaeilge, and Polish stand-up from Aleksandra Radomska. Not to mention WOMP Events’ GREAT BIG BIG Screen Quiz, Steve Steen’s Improv Workshop, the 2026 Tedfest Toilet Duck Awards (Best New Act Competition) and some outstanding poetry from Porky The Poet (Phill Jupitus), Jan Brierton, David Hynes & Aoife Dunne.
Finally, after a hugely successful debut last year, CroíACT (pronounced “Craic’d”) is set to return as part of #GCF25. Last year’s inaugural event raised an incredible €20,000 (€10k each) for two local charities — Croí and ACT for Meningitis — as eight brave members of the Galway community stepped far outside their comfort zones to deliver stand-up comedy routines after a training programme with well-known comedian Karl Spain. CroíACT is a unique fundraiser, combining laughter and heart with community spirit. Don’t miss your chance to cheer on eight brave new souls for two great causes.
There is truly something for everyone at #GCF25. Browse the full programme and book tickets via www.galwaycomedyfestival.ie

GEMMA
History, Hospitality & One Hell of a Menu
With a new team, an inventive kitchen, and a beer garden that might just be the city’s sunniest spot, the Hole in the Wall has cemented itself as a mustvisit for locals, students, and visitors alike.
Food is at the heart of the Hole in the Wall experience. Head Chef Seán, who previously worked at the now-closed Caribou, brings his own flair to the menu, giving it a fresh lease of life. Known for “dirty but tasty” comfort food, the menu leans into indulgent pub classics with a twist.
Burgers are the star of the menu - from double smash patties with smoky bacon to spicy jalapeño options. Alongside them, loaded fries always earn rave reviews, with the bacon jam fries in particular achieving near-legendary status. The steak sandwich is another standout, it’s one of the most popular items on the menu and
considered one of the best in Galway. Monthly food and drink specials also keep things fresh, ensuring there’s always something new to try.
The pub’s cocktail offering has become one of its signatures. Quirky, creative drinks rotate regularly, from decadent dessertinspired sips to refreshing crowdpleasers. It’s part of what makes the Hole in the Wall an easy choice for both a casual evening pint or a night out with friends. Management, led by Ryan Gibbons, continues to strengthen the cocktail program even further, so there’s always fun new drinks to enjoy.

Ask any regular, and they’ll tell you the beer garden is one of the pub’s biggest draws. Perfectly positioned, it soaks up sunshine from late morning until evening, making it arguably one of the best sun traps in Galway. Recently spruced up with new seating, greenery, and a refreshed layout, it’s a space made for long afternoon sessions that lead seamlessly into night.
Step inside, and Hole in the Wall’s interior sets it apart. Unique and characterful, it’s filled with unexpected details, including two pianos bolted to the ceiling! But behind the style is a serious history. The building is one of Galway’s most photographed bars, gracing countless postcards over the years. Originally a 19th-century agricultural supply store, P.Fahey’s, with stables before transforming into the beloved pub it is
today. For many locals, the pub carries personal memories too, from student nights to family celebrations, it’s a place woven into the city’s social fabric. Community is central to the Hole in the Wall’s ethos. The bar proudly sponsors the Galway Tribesmen Rugby League Club, a partnership that has grown into a genuine friendship over the years. The Tribesmen even host their weekly quiz nights at the bar, highlighting its role as a hub for more than just food and drink. Beyond the doors, the pub is also very much part of Woodquay’s own community - a neighbourhood that values connection, tradition, and bringing up one other. The Hole in the Wall is an evident extension of that spirit: lively yet welcoming, steeped in history yet always forward-looking.
Run with heart by a team who understand the importance of good food, good drink, and good company. The Hole in the Wall is the kind of place that offers something which appeals to everyone, whether you’re new to Galway as a student or a long-time local.
Visit them at 17 Eyre Street, Galway, and online on socials @barholeinthewall or holeinthewallbar.ie for more. The kitchen is open Monday to Thursday from 5pm, Fridays from 3pm and Saturdays and Sundays from 1pm.

What Not at Baboró
Ireland’s leading international arts festival for children, Baboró, returns to Galway this October 10th-19th. For ten exciting days, schools, families, and young audiences are invited to explore a packed programme of theatre, circus, puppetry, dance, and visual art from world-class Irish and international artists.
At its core, Baboró is about accessibility and inclusion, ensuring that every child can enjoy the joy and power of the arts. “Baboró is about creating space for children to engage with big ideas, experience joy and explore their own creativity through the arts,” says Aislinn Ó hEocha, Artistic Director. Here’s a closer look at some of this year’s highlights:
[Superstrat[ - par Terre / Anne Nguyen Dance Company
Dance / Black Box Theatre / Ages 5+
An energetic solo performance that travels through time using rhythm and gesture. Drawing on traditional African dance and its evolution, the piece celebrates the body’s memory and ability to rediscover harmonies

between ancient roots and modern life. Expect a captivating mix of urban dance, African choreography, and upbeat music.
Copiar - Animal Religion
Circus / Black Box Theatre / Ages 5+
Copying is often misunderstood, yet it’s how we connect, learn, and teach. In this playful circus show, children take centre stage as they explore movement, light, and music with no guide other than the essential act of copying. From a copy, an original emerges.
Double You - Be Flat
Circus / Black Box Theatre / Ages 6+
Five talented artists share two stages, separated by a fabric wall with the audience seated on either side. While shadows and sounds cross the barrier, you can’t help but wonder.. What’s happening on the other side? What am I missing? A playful social experiment that combines high octane circus, acrobatics, parkour and live music, Double You is a circus performance based on the Fear of Missing Out.

Matière(s) première(s) - par Terre / Anne Nguyen Dance Company Dance / Black Box Theatre / Ages 11+
A unique ensemble work blending street and traditional African dance to examine colonisation’s impact on communities. Sometimes subtle, sometimes explosive, this choreography reveals the beauty and brutality of our shared histories, while celebrating connection. Choreographed by Anne Nguyen, the ‘grande dame’ of urban Afrodance.

First Impressions - Jane Hayes
Exhibition / Galway Arts Centre / Ages 8 months-7 years
Created especially for early years, this immersive exhibition features toddler-height sculptures, hand-tufted textiles, photography, animation, and soundscapes. This show honours the intelligence, agency and sensory ways in which young children experience the world and art: physically, playfully and with deep curiosity.
A Children’s Guide to Anarchy - Dumbworld & Red Note Ensemble Exhibition / Outset Gallery / Ages 6+
An innovative blend of visual art that explores key elements of “anarchical” thinking such as autonomy, kindness and human connectivity from a child’s perspective.

A New Chapter for the Shannon Park Bank Outdoor Swimming Pool

The River Shannon has always played a vital role for the community of the East Galway-Offaly border. On summer afternoons, the riverside atmosphere buzzes with life, with the laughter of children chasing each other into the water and the low hum of boats drifting past the bridge. Just beside Shannon Bank Park near Banagher, under the watch of Cromwell’s Castle, lies one of Ireland’s quirkiest swimming spots: a floating pool tethered to the river itself.
For more than 30 years, this pool has been a cherished amenity and meeting place for families and communities from East Galway and surrounding counties. Generations have learned to swim here, teenagers perfected their dives, and visitors from across Ireland have come to enjoy summer afternoons by the river. Now, Banagher’s favourite summertime spot has been given a fresh lease of life. The newly upgraded facility officially opened to the public on 22nd September, marking a major milestone for both the town and the wider East Galway region, which is increasingly gaining recognition as a hub for tourism and communitybased development.
Designed and built by local company Inland and Coastal Marine Assistance, the new pool keeps its trademark floating design but adds wide pontoons for lounging, better seating for sunseekers, and a launch point for kayaks and paddleboards. For the first time, there’s wheelchair access too, ensuring everyone can share in the experience. And the best part? The pool will remain free to use, keeping alive the tradition of open, accessible fun for all.
What makes this upgrade even more remarkable is the community behind it. In just a few months, the Shannon Bank Park Development Group raised nearly €200,000, an astonishing feat for a town of fewer than two thousand people. This project was awarded significant funding through Fáilte Ireland’s Regenerative Tourism and Placemaking Scheme, which is co-funded by the EU and the Government of Ireland under the EU Just Transition fund.

Speaking about the
project,
Loretta Raftery, Just Transition Fund Activator for Galway, said,
“This is one of our many successful JTF projects. It is a fantastic community-based project and is crucial to the
development
of Ireland’s Hidden Heartlands, a region
with a
strong tradition of community-based tourism. The Just Transition Fund represents just the beginning of tourism development for East Galway.”

Phase one of the project, now complete, has transformed the site into a sleek, accessible pool that still holds the charm of the old pool. Phase two, planned for 2026, will weave the pool more closely into the riverside park with landscaping and further improvements, ensuring it becomes a focal point for recreation and tourism in East Galway.
Already the new pool is drawing swimmers, paddlers, and sun-seekers back to the water’s edge. With swimmers braving the cool temperature of Shannon and kayakers pushing off from the pontoon, passersby can sit and watch all the activity unfold with a takeaway coffee from town. For visitors, the pool is a perfect starting point to explore East Galway, from its riverside walks and heritage sites to its growing network of community-led attractions. The nearby Banagher town also offers cafés, shops, and historic landmarks to complement the experience. So, pack your swimsuit and maybe a picnic blanket, because this East Galway outdoor pool is about to become your new favourite summertime swimming spot.

Q. Tell us about yourself. - Who are you & what do you do?
I have no idea who I am, still figuring that bit out, and I hate telling people I am a comedian because the next thing they ask you to do is tell a joke, so I usually tell folks I am Aoife, and I am a bit of a dose, but I am also a comedian, poet and content creator online.
Q. What do you love about your job?
I love being on stage (she’s never off it, as my mum used to say) and feeling like a conductor of people’s energy and mood when I am up there. I lost my mum when I was 23 years old, and honestly, the thing I have learnt that has saved me through years of grieving is laughter - and not only laughter, but silliness, acting the maggot, all of that: the ability to face the heaviest, most serious thing life can throw at you, and still roll around on the floor laughing with your best friend because you woke up to a pigeon trapped in your bedroom.
This is what my show ‘Good Grief’ is all about - the ability to find the laughter no matter what. And I love helping folks find theirs.
Q. What’s your favourite thing to do in Galway?
I think Galway was made for slow days - for slow days with no plans, and people-watching. I love going to Neachtains on one of those slow days (after a coffee from Coffeewerk + Press and a wander around the Galway markets) and sitting outside with my pint and a book from Charlie Byrne’s, and watching the world go by.
Q. Favourite piece of Galway slang? I do love the slang ‘arra’. I thought it was universal until I moved to Dublin and used it on dates with some Dublin lads (first mistake, in fairness), and after a few messages, and dates, one lad was like, “What the hell does arra mean?” - I knew then I should never date a Dublin man again.

Q. Who and what makes you laugh the most?
I love goofy, silly, ridiculous, naughty humour - like when you’re on day three of a festival, and you’re exhausted and giddy, and everything is making you laugh, and you’re in the tent with your friends rolling around laughing at your friend dividing tissues out to strangers outside the portaloos like a tissue Jesus. I think Irish girls, when they are together, are the naughtiest, funniest beings on planet Earth.
Q. Tell us about your new solo show, Good Grief.
It is a one-woman comedy and storytelling show that blends stand-up, storytelling, and poetic reflections. The heart of the show is about grief, family, resilience, and joy - how life can fall apart, how you find humour in the darkest moments, and
how laughter can hold space even in loss. It is my debut show, and I am so rarely proud of myself, but I am really proud of this show.
Q. Who are you most excited to see at this year’s Galway Comedy Festival? I have always been a massive fan of Dylan Moran, and his show ‘Monster’ I used to watch on repeat when I lived in Spain in my early 20s, when I was homesick and lonely and wanted to remember funny people. But I am probably most excited to see my fellow female comedians, my amazingly talented friends - Anna Clifford, Rachel Galvo, Sophia Wren, Síomha Hennessy, Sinéad Quinlan, etc.
Q. Tell us a joke! Housing in Ireland. Lol. I’ll get my coat.

Dream Dine Sip
In the city

In the city
In the city

October in Galway is a month bursting with creativity, food, laughter, and spectacle. When the city’s streets, theatres, and venues come alive with world-class events celebrating arts, culture, and community. From familyfriendly performances to exhilarating parades, here’s what’s ahead:
Running until October 12th, Architecture at the Edge 2025 explores the theme of the “Unseen,” highlighting the ofteninvisible factors that shape the spaces we live in. Talks, screenings, workshops, and exhibitions showcase how these imperceptible details influence our daily lives, consciously and subconsciously.
Adding a playful twist to the city’s festival calendar, the Galway Cartoon Festival (3rd-8th) showcases the best of cartoon art from Ireland and beyond. The festival fills galleries, pubs, and public spaces with witty and thoughtprovoking illustrations, offering sharp commentary on politics, society, and everyday life. Workshops, exhibitions and talks give audiences the chance to learn from leading cartoonists, making it a festival that is both entertaining and insightful.
On October 10-19th, Baboró International Arts Festival for Children, Ireland’s
flagship international arts festival for children, invites schools, families and young audiences to dive into a world of imagination, creativity and wonder. This year’s festival will feature stunning new work in theatre, circus, puppetry, dance and visual art by leading Irish and international artists. See page 18 for our festival highlights.
Synonymous with Halloween in Galway, Macnas, known worldwide for their towering puppets, wild costumes, and dreamlike storytelling, return on October 26th with ‘An Treun - The Summoning of The Lost’. Inspired by a long-lost tale from Dracula author Bram Stoker and the haunting call of the vanished Corncrake, the parade will once again transform the city into a surreal playground of spectacle and storytelling.
Rounding out the month with laughter, the Galway Comedy Festival on October 21st-27th features a line-up that blends household names and fresh talent, as the festival ensures a week of belly laughs and unforgettable nights. For more on this see page 4.
Food lovers can’t miss the 10th edition of Food on the Edge (27th & 28th). This international symposium brings together some of the world’s most innovative chefs to discuss the future of food. Alongside inspiring talks, visitors can enjoy tastings, demonstrations, and the chance to connect with culinary professionals.
