Higher Rent, Energy Prices Push Inflation Further to 18.55% Naira Falls to N497/$ Protest against CBN's forex policy flops

Obinna Chima and James Emejo in Abuja For the fifteenth straight month, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) which measures inflation increased to 18.55 per

cent (year-on-year) in December last year compared to 18.48 per cent in the previous month, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) stated yesterday. It attributed the 0.07 per cent hike in the headline index to price increases observed in all

the divisions which determine the index. According to the CPI figures for the month under review, Housing, Water, Electricity, Gas and Other Fuels, Clothing and Footwear and Education recorded the highest increases

while Communication and Restaurants and Hotels recorded the slowest pace of growth in December, growing at 5.33 per cent and 8.91 per cent (year-onyear) respectively. The Food Index rose by 17.39 per cent (year-on-year) in

December 2016, up by 0.20 per cent points from rate recorded in November (17.19) per cent. According to the NBS, all major food sub-indexes increased, with Soft Drinks recording the slowest pace of increase at 7.66 per cent (year-on-year).

Buhari in Last Ditch Effort to Persuade Jammeh to Hand Over

Yemi Adebowale with agency report President Muhammadu Buhari led a regional delegation to Gambia yesterday in a last-ditch

attempt to persuade its longtime leader, Yahaya Jammeh to step down and allow his rival's inauguration next week, while fears grow that the impasse could turn violent. As at press time, it could not

be ascertained if an agreement had been reached with the Gambian leader to step down, as Buhari departed for Bamako, Mali to brief some West African leaders, with a view to taking a final decision. Jammeh had

stated clearly that he would not step down setting the stage for a cliffhanger. His attempt to hang on to power is being resisted by the African Union (AU) and the United Nations (UN) which had insisted that

he must hand over. Sources said Buhari had been authorised to offer Jammeh asylum, if necessary, during Friday's visit. It could not be ascertained if Jammeh accepted this.

John Shiklam in Kaduna Former head of state, Gen. Abubakar Abdulsalami (rtd), the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar II and the Catholic Bishop of Sokoto, Rev. Matthew Kukah yesterday visited the Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai at the Government House, Kaduna, in a bid to resolve the raging crisis in the southern part of the state. During the visit, they held a closed-door meeting with the governor, during which they were briefed about the crisis that led to the killings of many people and destruction of property worth billions of Naira in the trouble area. Before the meeting with Abdulsalami and co, retired military generals from Southern

Kaduna, led by the former Chief of Defence Staff, Lt. Gen. Martins Luther Agwai had met with the governor on the way forward to ending the crisis. Agwai was the chairman of the 16-member committee set up by El-Rufai in June 2015 to find solutions to the incessant killings in the southern part of the state. Speaking in an interview with journalists shortly after their meeting with the governor, Abdulsalami said their visit was due to recent happenings in southern Kaduna.
