If you or someone you know is looking for a great summer job, now is the time to apply!

This popular alternative provides convenience, comfort and affordability for rodeo-goers of all ages.

RAINFALL SAVES ON SPRINKLER USAGE

2024: BANNER YEAR FOR RESIDENTIAL WATER CONSERVATION

In 2024, residents of The Woodlands made a splash with water conservation, using an average of 9,200 gallons per month - 11% below our historical average.

So what was the primary reason behind the reduction? Rainfall. Nearly half of household water use typically supports the lawn and landscape. With 36% more rainfall than usual—68 inches in 2024 compared to the average 50 inches—residents could scale back their irrigation.

But can we take credit for the rain? Sure! Smart water habits are key to sustainability, and turning off irrigation systems when they aren’t needed is a win for both conservation and lawn health.

During those frequent spring and fall showers, reduced sprinkler use prevented overwatering, the single biggest factor behind lawn problems. Warm season grasses, which we have in The Woodlands, thrive on less than an inch of water per week, rain included.

And even more savings are possible! Consider that back in 2021, Woodlands households used even less water per month (8,300 gallons) despite receiving 30% less rain than in 2024demonstrating that significant savings are possible, even in varying weather conditions.

Woodlands Water is continuing to do its part; in 2024, over $2 million was dedicated to system efficiency, reliability, and leak prevention, which helped achieve a remarkably low water loss rate of 5%, compared to the state average of 16.1%.

Woodlands Water remains committed to helping households save water and money through a variety of residential programs and services, including free sprinkler system inspections, rebates for water-saving devices, and the WaterSmart online portal. WaterSmart connects directly to your digital water meter, giving you detailed insights into indoor and outdoor water use. It even alerts you to leaks or unusually high usage, which can be a lifesaver when you’re away from home. Scan here to learn more!

3R DRIVE THRU FREE RECYCLING EVENT

Help by following these guidelines: Bag or box like items together and place in your trunk or back seat. Volunteers will provide a full-service drive-thru so please stay in your vehicle. GREAT TEXAS BIRDING CLASSIC

The Great Texas Birding Classic is an annual competition held across Texas to determine which team can identify and count the most birds during a specific window of time. This is the biggest birdwatching tournament in the state, and you can participate!

New and experienced birders alike are invited to join us at this birding hotspot Saturday, May 3, 2025, from 6:30 to 10:30 a.m. identifying as many birds as they can see and hear.

We will be competing in the “Big Sit” category from the new bird blind overlooking a picturesque pond 0.5 miles down the path from the Creekside West Trailhead of the George Mitchell Nature Preserve.

Bring a lawn chair and binoculars and come experience the new bird blind. We’ll have binoculars and chairs available to borrow from our Birding Backpack program. All ages are welcome.

COCHRAN'S CROSSING

Submitted by Cynthia Kessinger

The annual Cochran’s Crossing Village Association election for the 18-member area representative board was held, with the new board taking office in mid-February. Welcome to all new and returning board members! With the election of officers and budget adoption for the fiscal year, plans are underway for fun events for the residents!

Last year, both our annual fall festival and pool party were well attended, and residents did

a magnificent job decorating during the holiday season. The village board had fun judging and appreciated the great community spirit! A special shout-out to retired village board member Jim Goldmeyer for his years of community service. We honored Jim with a beautiful tree planted at Summer Storm Park.

We also honored teachers from our Cochran’s Crossing schools at the January village meeting where we award teacher grants to support projects and/or supplies for use by students in the classroom! Please go to cochranscrossing.org for details of grants awarded in late January.

The new village association scholarship application is online! Applicants must be high school seniors currently living in Cochran’s Crossing and planning to continue their education at a fouryear university, a two-year college or a vocational trade or technical school. The association will award up to two $1,000 scholarships. The link to the application is available at cochranscrossing.org and through The Woodlands High School and The Woodlands College Park High School College and Career Centers.

There are many great local resources available for personal and home safety. For instance, house numbering kits are available from The Woodlands Township to self-paint your address on the curb. The paint can be seen at night by emergency personnel to provide aid at your residence. The kit includes all the supplies needed to paint your number. The visibility also helps to ensure your packages will be delivered to your home.

Another resource is Operation ID. Residents can check out an engraving kit from The Township to mark valuables. If stolen and recovered, the ID may help in the return of the valuables to their owner. With spring break around the corner, taking advantage of the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office Vacation Watch program to check on your home will give you peace of mind while you travel.

Residents are always welcome at our monthly meetings. The next two meetings are March 25, 2025, and April 22, 2025, at 7 p.m. at The Woodlands Township building. We hope to see you there!

If you are not already following us on Facebook, please find us at Village of Cochran’s Crossing Association. Our goal is to keep residents informed, so we regularly post local news, announcements and upcoming events. We are also on Instagram. Please go to our website, cochranscrossing.org, for

additional information and email us at communicationsforccva@gmail.com with any questions or concerns.

Note: The Cochran’s Crossing Village Association article was inadvertently omitted from the January/ February magazine issue. Time-relevant contents of the article are included in this month's article. The Woodlands Community Magazine apologizes for the omission.

All Yard of the Month winners receive $50 in Market Bucks, which can be spent at The Woodlands Farmers Market.

INDIAN SPRINGS

Submitted by Aimee Logan Pearce

Calling all college-bound 2025 graduating seniors who are Indian Springs residents! The most exciting time of the year for the Indian Springs Village Association is when we award scholarships to deserving

graduating seniors. The essential purpose of the association is to raise funds to honor those students who have demonstrated an immense dedication to community service and citizenship. This year’s scholarship applications are currently available on our website. Scholarship information and applications can be downloaded at indianspringstx. com/senior-scholarship.The Indian Springs Village Association has funded over $40,000 in scholarships over the last eight years. Funds are raised primarily through community events such as The Taste of the Village.

The Indian Springs Village Association is proud to support our outstanding public schools. The funds raised through our events, such as the Taste of the Village in October and multiple Townshipsponsored events throughout the year, are used for scholarships to our Indian Springs high school seniors and donations to our neighborhood schools.

This year, donations will be made to Glen Loch Elementary, Galatas Elementary and Coulson Tough. Typically, funds are used for the enhancement of classroom libraries and accelerated reading programs that can improve vocabulary and increase reading comprehension of a variety of books.

DO I NEED A PERMIT?

Yes. If you’re planning an improvement to your home—such as painting the exterior, replacing your fence or even removing a tree—you likely need a permit, although some exceptions may apply.

Why? All properties in The Woodlands are subject to the legal Covenants and Standards, which are designed to maintain the community’s aesthetic, property values and overall quality of life. These covenants help preserve the vision of The Woodlands by ensuring that modifications align with established guidelines.

By obtaining a permit, you ensure your project complies with these standards, preventing potential issues down the line. The majority of permits for small improvements do not incur a fee, while larger projects, such as pool or patio installations, may have associated costs.

Before you begin any exterior project, check with The Woodlands Township to confirm the requirements for your specific improvement.
