MD Anderson in The Woodlands Expands Breast Cancer Services
The MD Anderson Regional Care Center in The Woodlands provides comprehensive breast cancer services from a team of specialists who focus only on you and your cancer.
The Woodlands recently welcomed breast surgical oncologist Loren Rourke, M.D., F.A.C.S., an assistant professor in the Department of Surgical Oncology at MD Anderson. In addition to her advanced training and extensive expertise as a surgical oncologist, Dr. Rourke has specialized training as a Susan G. Komen interdisciplinary breast fellow.
Dr. Rourke is excited to join the team of physicians, nurses, dietitians, social workers, and physical therapists who work closely together to customize a care plan for each patient’s cancer. Unique MD Anderson treatment options available in The Woodlands include surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, clinical trials, and support services such as mental health and nutrition.
Pamela Magee, a breast cancer patient who receives treatment at MD Anderson in The Woodlands, enjoys working with the center’s dietitian.
“I really wanted to meet with her since nutrition is like a hobby for me,” she says. “It is a very important part of my care.”
Pain management services are also available to The Woodlands patients. Cancer pain is very treatable, since each patient’s pain is unique, treatment plans are tailored to address the needs of each individual.
“Working with other fellowship trained,
board-certified oncologists, our patients get a more complete team approach to their care,” says Dr. Rourke.
The MD Anderson Regional Care Center in The Woodlands is located on the campus of St. Luke’s The Woodlands Hospital.

The Woodlands Governance: Options for the Future The Woodlands
Inlast month’s issue, a chronology of how the Woodlands township came to be was presented. Key elements of future governance for the Woodlands are the regional Participation agreements (rPas) entered into with the Cities of Houston and Conroe which prevent annexation of the Woodlands and allow residents to determine their own future governance structure within the next 50 years. While voters overwhelmingly approved the change in governmental structure to become the Woodlands township in 2007, the rPas provide the opportunity to change the current governance structure, including the option to incorporate as a municipality as early as May 2014.
as this date approaches, the township’s Board of Directors has initiated a process to proactively determine if the current governance structure is best suited for the community now and into the future, or whether changes need to be made. this process includes a “gap analysis,” an evaluation of the effectiveness of existing service delivery and the potential future need for expanded and/or new services and governing tools as the community evolves.
Over the next 18 months, the community will consider the direction to pursue for governance planning, including whether to maintain the status quo, make adjustments to the current township structure, or pursue incorporation. this discussion will utilize the research being conducted and input from the Woodlands’ residents and business community. as details are finalized, look to The Woodlands Community Magazine for public engagement opportunities and project developments.
This is the third part in a series of articles published in The Woodlands Community Magazine reviewing the history of governance and how the Township came to be, outlining the community’s current governance structure, and identifying some of the decisions ahead. This information is being provided to prepare the community for public dialogue events to be held in the future. We invite you to follow the process by visiting the Township’s Web site, www.thewoodlandstownship-tx.gov and clicking on Government then Transition and Governance, and by following monthly briefings provided at the Board of Directors meetings. Information is this article was compiled by Partners for Strategic Action and Township staff. Please watch for ongoing governance information in future issues of The Woodlands Community Magazine.

Who could think of a better way to beat the heat than offering up ice cream and a cool swim to go with it? We couldn’t – so we invited Cochran’s Crossing residents to a Bear Branch Pool Party Ice Cream social. We hope you were among the happy folks who attended. If so you’ll recognize the friendly Cochran’s Crossing Village association’ers pictured below as the guys and gals who made it all possible. Congratulations to June Yard of the Month winners tom and Margaret Campbell. tom and Margaret moved to their home on Coralvine Court in 1978. Margaret enjoys working in the different garden areas that are surrounded by moss rock, and their walkways have decorative pavers throughout. they have azaleas, camellias, columbine, caladiums and of course, several coralvine plants that climb up the trees. tom does most of the heavy planting work and Margaret tells him where things will look best when the plants mature and bloom. the whole yard is full of life. their neighbor Bob says they plant and replant to get just the correct balance year around for everyone to enjoy. People wishing to nominate

Indian Springs
indian springs 4th of July Float
the Village of Indian springs is once again indebted to richard stromatt for designing and building a unique and inspiring 4th of July parade float. We hope that many residents were able to view our float and others at the parade this year. the float was designed for the 2011 theme of “Celebrating the american Dream” and contained a 5-foot by 18-foot photograph of three bronze statues which are part of the large public 3D art collection in the Woodlands. a photo of “the Dreamer” (our well-loved lounging man sculpted by David Phelps and located at south Panther Creek and Woodlands Parkway) was flanked by photos of founding dreamers George Mitchell and Cynthia Woods Mitchell (sculpted by J. Hester and located at the entrance to the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion). the float was populated with residents dressed and equipped to reflect “the american Dream in our Hometown” and of course decorated with live trees, which are emblematic of our hometown. Many thanks to richard and his merry band of helpers for once again creating a 4th of July masterpiece!
Traffic concerns
In July, our Board was visited by art salinas, from Commissioner ed Chance’s office, to inform us of the results of a traffic survey we had requested regarding traffic safety concerns at and near Flintridge and Kuykendahl. at print deadline, the Montgomery County Commissioners’ Court is poised to reduce the speed limit along the Montgomery

Alpha & Omega Mounted Security Patrol is a family-owned and operated business in existence since 1990. A&O Troopers and Horses patrol The Woodlands Township regularly as one component of the comprehensive security plan. We appreciate being a part of the community for the last 16 years. Please visit with our Troopers, pet the horses, and let us know how we are doing. Or visit our web site or connect with us on Facebook and leave a comment there. Your opinion matters to us.
Did you know?
A&O Troopers come from all walks of life. Some are former police officers. Many own their own horse ranches or farms. Women and men equally make good Troopers. Every Trooper goes through a comprehensive selection process. Applicants must complete a rigorous testing procedure which demonstrates their professionalism, public relations skills, and horsemanship. Once hired, Troopers receive on-the-job training and must complete a 40-hour certification academy within one year.
Public Safety Tips
As summer continues, extreme heat still brings many challenges for A&O riders. We have specific procedures to guarantee the safety of our Troopers and their horses including shift rotation and adjustments, special care for horses, custom equipment to deflect heat, use of horses acclimated to the heat, and specific feeding and watering for hot weather.

The Healthcare Building Block
By roger Galatas
attracting
first class medical care for the new town was identified early on as an important quality of life building block.
so how did we approach healthcare?
By 1978, enough people had moved to the Woodlands to establish a nucleus of leaders interested in future community services including healthcare. It was within that early group of pioneers that conversations led to productive discussions with the development company that was also looking at the healthcare issue. this evolved into a more formal legal structure. the Woodlands Medical Center, Inc., a non-profit corporation, was established to define and carry forward the community’s vision for healthcare with guidance from a healthcare consultant and financial support from the corporation.
the first identified need was for a clinic that would attract doctors to serve in the community. there were some in Conroe to the north. and to the south was the famed
texas Medical Center with some of the finest practitioners of medicine in the world. But there was no substantial health delivery system within the community. By that time five or six thousand people lived here. so the first approach was to design, build and operate a clinic that would serve to attract doctors and provide outpatient services. However, because both Medicare and some insurance programs at that time provided payments for certain procedures only if the patient stayed in a hospital overnight, the clinic was planned to have two beds. We designed the clinic and prepared an application to the state of texas to secure a certificate of need permit required to operate the facility.
the Woodlands Corporation then recruited Dr. Jack lesch in 1979 as the first medical director of the proposed clinic. lesch was just finishing his family medical residency in Houston. “I had no real particular interest in the
position, but then, I was captured by the vision of what was going on in the Woodlands,” lesch said. so he turned down a nice, secure opportunity he had waiting for him in a wellestablished medical group to accept this more risky offer.
But as it turned out, the planned clinic never opened. It became entangled in the state medical bureaucracy. the state turned down the application by the Woodlands for a certificate of need. the 10,000-square-foot family practice clinic, already built, couldn’t open. so young Dr. Jack lesch arrived, and the clinic he was supposed to head could not open.
to bridge the problem, Dr. lesch was provided temporary office space in an unused corner of the original Information Center and he operated his practice there until later building his own medical clinic in 1985.
Our focused quest for a hospital that started in late 1979 wasn’t only for good health reasons. It was because a potential competitor, the Humana Corporation, proposed to build a forprofit hospital on Interstate 45 adjacent to the Woodlands. We felt that if the Humana Hospital was built, we would not have a chance to get one in the Woodlands. We wanted a not-forprofit hospital with a relationship with the texas Medical Center. Officials from Baylor College of Medicine and st. luke’s, all in the texas Medical Center, helped plan a new hospital for the Woodlands. But it was the Methodist Hospital that played an unbelievably important role. Methodist committed corporate resources and executive talent in successful support of the Woodlands Hospital. they led the way for the non-profit’s certificate of need application, architectural design, initial staffing and opening of the hospital in 1985 and Methodist signed on to manage the hospital. George Mitchell approved spending $500,000 of corporate funds for preliminary design and legal work necessary to support the application effort.
In order to get $20 million needed to build the hospital from a consortium of 10 banks,

Mitchell additionally agreed to pay up to $12.5 million of any operating losses. With Methodist leading the way, we begged these 10 banks to loan $20 million to us, and they did. and not one of those 10 banks is in business today under the same name, and the hospital has flourished. some of the banks disappeared as a result of the economic downturn of the mid80s. some merged with other institutions but they did not fail because of the hospital loan.
Obtaining a certificate of need for the new hospital at the Woodlands was by no means a slam dunk. Montgomery County had recently created a hospital district and built the new Conroe regional Hospital. they were concerned about competition for their new facility. But they were more concerned about the proposed for-profit Humana facility than they were about a non-profit hospital that would be built by the Woodlands. so we gained the political support of the hospital district by being the lesser of evils.
One condition of that support was the Woodlands Hospital would initially be no bigger than 100 beds and it would be located on Interstate 45, not within the interior of the Woodlands, so it wouldn’t look as if they were doing us a favor but were instead helping to bring health care to the broader area of south Montgomery County.
soon after the Woodlands Hospital opened it ran into problems. the first problem was simply not enough people using it. When it opened there were 25 doctors with admitting privileges at the new hospital. But only five or six physicians were actually using it regularly. In the 100-bed hospital, the average daily census, patients actually occupying beds, was only 21.
In those early days, the hospital was so underutilized the parking lot looked deserted. We invited vanpools to use the parking lot at the hospital and that gave the general appearance of a lot more activity. You’d be amazed how effective marketing can be when you have a crowded parking lot. so never complain about your parking lot being too crowded if you own a business.
that helped, but what really helped was recruiting more good doctors and growth in the community. the other problem was one we could not have anticipated. Methodist was named in a lawsuit filed against another managed hospital in east texas. as a result, the Methodist Board elected to get out of managing community hospitals.
grand opening
Grand Opening of The Woodlands Hospital in January 1985.
so there we were: a board of directors of volunteer lay people. None of us knew how to run a hospital and Methodist had pulled out. luckily the administrator, the financial officer and the head of nursing, who had been named by Methodist, elected to stay with the hospital and work with the Board. a couple of years later we were fortunate in finding Memorial Hermann Hospital system interested in expanding its ownership of community hospitals, particularly this one. they bought it for $21 million. We paid off the $20 million of debt, and used the extra million dollars for charitable purposes. George Mitchell’s $12.5 million loan guarantee was never needed.
the hospital in the Woodlands has continued to grow under Memorial Hermann ownership. the original $20 million hospital investment has grown to more than $240 million. a new tower with 252 hospital beds is complete and several medical office buildings have been added and expansion continues.
The Woodlands Hospital
It’s been a wonderful experience. It started with the question of how could we provide healthcare in this community of 5,000 people, and has grown into something quite substantial. and success breeds success. st. luke’s constructed and opened the second hospital in the Woodlands and MD anderson and texas Children’s have joined that campus of providers. there are now some 4,000 physicians, healthcare professionals and related staff serving the community and surrounding region. so not only has it been a good asset for healthcare, it’s been a good economic boost to the community as well.

Park Highlight - May valley
May Valley Park was designed by award-winning landscape architecture firm TBG in Houston. The park encompasses nine densely forested acres within the subdivision of May Valley, located in the Village of Sterling Ridge. Some of the amenities include a sprayground (which opened in June 2011), outdoor kitchen, basketball court, tennis courts, restrooms, an open field area for festivals and other athletic events, and two conveniently located parking lots at either end of the park for ease of access from anywhere within the May Valley subdivision.
Early East Texas architecture is the inspiration behind this local community park and its influence can be found in many of the design elements. The pavilion takes its architectural cues from the early East Texas pioneer homes, commonly referred to as “cracker houses,” a pioneer-era dog-run, two crib log cabin. Shortly after the Texas Revolution in 1836, there was little affluence amongst settlers in Texas. As more settlers arrived in Texas from the southern states, they introduced an appreciation for the fine classical revival houses they had back home, promoting the style until it quickly became popular in Texas.
