NORTH DAKOTA PETROLEUM COUNCIL Four of five North Dakotans statewide favor oil and gas development, according to a survey commissioned by the North Dakota Petroleum Council (NDPC). The survey also found that 73 percent of North Dakotans agree benefits of oil and gas development outweigh the risks and that 83 per-

cent believe oil and gas production should increase or stay the same. “North Dakotans recognize that the oil and gas industry has been a game-changer for western North Dakota, revitalizing and growing many of our once-shrinking schools and rural communities,” said Ron Ness, president of the NDPC. “Never before have there been so many opportunities in western North Dakota and across the state.”“North Dakotans recognize that the oil and gas industry has been a game-changer for western North Dakota, revitalizing and growing many of our once-shrinking schools and rural communities,” said Ron Ness, president of the NDPC. “Never before have there been so many opportunities in western North Dakota and across the state.” __________________________

Fracking: America’s New ‘F’ Word by: Jessica Sena

Since the release of the films “Gasland” and “Promised Land,” the 60-year-old petroleum extraction process of hydraulic fracturing, better known as “fracking,” has been lighting up the media like the flaming faucets used to scare energy consumers. Fracking is a post-drilling injection process that uses pressurized water, sand and publicly disclosed

chemicals to emulsify oil from minimally porous formations (shale) thousands of feet below ground. It is being used today with another innovation, horizontal drilling, to take America from energy scarcity, to energy abundance. Cutest Pet Contest Instory But in today’s climate of increased public involvement in policy making, with the ease of information sharing through social media, the proliferation of bad science and conjecture threatens the future of American-made energy and subsequent economic recovery more than any of the techniques being condemned by misinformed, activist sources. Opponents of energy development and fracking specifically pander to groups of regular “joiners” using emotional arguments rather than facts. Just this week, a national publication ran a story with the headline, “Fracking is Bad for Babies.” Today, protesters at a rally in New York lined up with children, and in their hands placed “Say No To Fracking” signs, which they

photographed and blasted into the Twittersphere. Never mind the heat provided by natural gas inside of the city buildings where protesters gathered. Never mind the gasoline that powers their vehicles, or the petroleum-based pieces of all their smartphones that made broadcasting their activism possible. Never mind the hypocrisy. Claims of contamination from drilling, flammable tap water, earthquakes, water shortages and even cancer have been reviewed and rebutted by the top regulatory agencies and medical centers in the country, and yet the controversy continues. Fracking bans proposed around the country have been based heavily on alarmist rhetoric and fear mongering. For too long, the industry has remained quiet, often choosing to remain hidden from the limelight that today many celebrities are rushing to be a part of. A limelight of activism, with the likes of Yoko Ono, Lady Gaga and others speaking out against something they know little about — energy development. But the industry is waking up. Realizing what influence social media now has on public opinion and public policy, the truth about oil, natural gas and fracking in particular is beginning to make its way into the mainstream via newly formed consumer information and public advocacy groups. And after 165 years, you could say it’s about fracking time. More than 6,000 everyday products are made from petroleum, including cosmetics, clothing, rubber and plastic. Petroleum is literally a lifesaver when you look at all the ways it is used — in heart valves, parachutes, seat belts and life preservers. It’s in the roads and tires we drive on, even in electric vehicles. It’s in water bottles, bike tires and paved

trails, affording those whose mobility is restricted to motorized means the ability to enjoy the great outdoors up close and personal. Agriculture and tourism rely heavily on petroleum. Just look at the diesel and fertilizer used for agriculture, and the transportation which literally fuels tourism. Think about manufacturing, construction and home building —

pay bills and shop locally, as well as the opportunity to recreate and travel. For students, innovation in the industry offers the promise of employment, and the means to pay off student loans. Montana’s only petroleum engineering department has increased 10 percent every year since 2007, and the diesel program at Missoula College now has a waiting list of

and the fuel they require. And with each oil and gas job, three more are created indirectly — jobs in retail, hospitality, food and service industries. Tax revenue created by oil and gas jobs provide funding for public programs as well, including schools. There is a very real and personal side of the petroleum industry, too, one that is too often ignored. Seldom acknowledged for being the lifeblood of a community or family, the jobs and paychecks from oil related jobs are exactly that. More than 25,000 jobs in Montana are related to oil and gas development. A job is a person’s ability to put food on the table and presents under the tree. A job affords families and individuals the means to

students. With resources in Montana, many people are finding work here without having to leave the state. Eastern Montana’s unemployment numbers offer the most telling story of the positive impact energy exploration has had on job creation. So in spite of the fracas about fracking, the facts speak loud and clear. The truth about petroleum is a reflection of the miracle of American ingenuity, the engine of economic progress, and what opportunity looks like. Jessica Sena is the communcations director for the Montana Petroleum Association. __________________________

John left the hospital this morning after three days of observation. It was not food poisoning; it was something totally unrelated to dinner at our house. Still, we all know how these kinds of stories can get twisted around. By the middle of next week, it’ll be all over town that we tried to kill him and that he barely escaped with his life. And his next-door neighbor is a lawyer. Who hasn’t been to a restaurant and accidently asked for an “evidence bag” when you meant to say “doggie bag”? I had eaten the last of the cherry pie while John was in the hospital, proving that it was blameless. And delicious. But I could see how a clever attorney might accuse me of destroying evidence. But actually, I told him, he should be thanking me. What if this had happened while we were on our cruise? We could have been out at sea when this hit, two days away from the nearest port. He didn’t buy it. If he catches the latest norovirus on our cruise, will that somehow end up being my fault? Instead of the guy who was coughing up a lung behind him on the flight down to the departure port?

Before planning a wedding -- a process I’m in the midst of -- I never understood what the big deal was. I never understood why people talked about it like it was one of the big stresses of life, why untold numbers of books had been written about it, why blocks of programming were devoted to it and why it took people I love and made them unrecognizable. Also I never understood the halting wide-eyed warnings people would issue when I told them I was planning a wedding. “Whatever you do,” they would say, grabbing my wrist for emphasis, “Don’t read the bridal magazines. They will just drive you crazy. Read two, but then stop.” Or “Don’t listen to all the voices, just remember, it’s about what you and Daniel want.” I also received the exact opposite advice, “The sooner you recognize that a wedding is for your family, and really isn’t for you and Daniel, the easier it’ll be.” The intensity and variety of the advice I received made me think I wasn’t taking the whole endeavor seriously enough -- not that I wasn’t taking matrimony seriously, because I was -- but that somehow I wasn’t taking wedding planning seriously enough. For example, I hadn’t signed up for ballroom dancing classes, started a scrapbook or even made a profile on Pinterest. And when people discovered this, and that I was trying to plan the thing in about four months, they gave me a look that was a mix of pity, fear and vicarious thrill. Probably the same look I would get if they found out I was going on a lengthy polar expedition and all I brought to sustain me was a cardigan, half a Fresca and a peanut.

What I Wish They Told Me About Planning a Wedding tively thorough person who likes to make sure each decision is the best one, given a number of factors from quality of service to cost. I’m indecisive and like to weigh my options. To feel comfortable I like to thoroughly vet each detail--- something I should have known about myself to begin with but didn’t quite recognize -- and so I’m finding the process to be immensely stressful and time-consuming. Another thing no one really warned me about: the paralyzing effect of IT’S YOUR DAY. You will receive this message -- that a wedding is your big day and you should love every aspect of it -- between two and three million times in the course of planning a wedding. You will think it isn’t really affecting you, but then you will sit down and try to choose between two florists, and one uses peonies, and you aren’t sure if you like peonies, and on the one hand does it really matter, a flower is a flower, but on the other hand, IT’S YOUR BIG DAY, and you should love everything about it, which is a lot of pressure.

At a certain point you will wonder why you’re doing this -- it’s stressful and expensive and you will think you should either elope or postpone the wedding or just not get married at all. And you will freak out. And then you will discover the parallel universe of wedding websites and books devoted to this reaction. I don’t know if it’s a generational thing or just something that has always happened but wasn’t often talked about, but women getting cold feet isn’t that uncommon. Especially women who get married in their 30s who are used “But what could possibly take so long?” I to being independent and fear the loss of wondered. “Why do people start planning that identity. 14 months in advance?” At the outset, I thought of planning a wedNow I know, having almost come out the ding as akin to planning a party -- someother side of it, and here’s what I wish peothing I don’t have a lot of experience dople had explained to me. ing but how hard can it be -- now I realize If you are the kind of person who looks at it’s about coming to terms with what it two vendors online and then chooses one means to be married. Dalrymple Presses BNSF to Improve Rail Service for North Dakota Shippers BISMARCK, N.D. – Gov. Jack Dalrymple late Thursday told BNSF Railway officials they need to make major improvements in their service to North Dakota’s grain elevators, mills and to shippers of other goods including coal and sugar. Dalrymple told BNSF officials that long delays in rail car arrivals are creating serious hardships for many North Dakota shippers and their customers. Grain elevators are struggling with rail car delays of about a month. Slow rail service is also forcing processors including the State Mill and Elevator and American Crystal Sugar Co. to reduce production, he said. “We pressed upon them just how important it is that our elevators, mills and other shippers see meaningful service improvements soon and that we also expect better, more reliable service in the long-term,” Dalrymple said. Dalrymple voiced concerns about slow rail service during a conference call with John Miller, vice president of BNSF grain marketing, Michael Shircliff, regional vice president of northern operations, and other BNSF officials. The BNSF officials told Dalrymple that harsh winter conditions have created operational challenges that are impeding rail service at a time of strong demand from all of the railway’s national service sectors. The railway officials told Dalrymple they are working to improve rail service to North Dakota and agreed to provide regular updates on specific service issues in North Dakota.

Dalrymple supports WBI Energy Natural Gas Project BISMARCK, N.D. – Gov. Jack Dalrymple today joined MDU Resources and WBI Energy in announcing the companies are moving forward with plans to build a natural gas pipeline that would increase North Dakota’s take-away capacity and further reduce flaring.

Gov. Jack Dalrymple

WBI Energy Inc., a subsidiary of MDU Resources Group, Inc., plans to build a 375-mile pipeline that would transport Bakken-produced natural gas from western North Dakota to industrial, commercial and residential customers in eastern North Dakota as well as markets throughout the Midwest.

The Dakota Pipeline has been designed to transport about 400 million cubic feet of natural gas per day, but could be expanded based on shipper demand to move about 500 million cubic feet per day. WBI Energy plans to invest $650 million to build the 24-inch Dakota Pipeline.

WBI Energy originally proposed running the pipeline through central North Dakota to an interconnection near Moorhead, Minn. Following market feedback, company officials revised the route and moved the eastern endpoint farther north to access interconnections with three pipelines: Great Lakes Gas Transmission Company, Viking Gas Transmission Company “We are committed to working with WBI and, potentially, TransCanada. I have been in a inner struggle dating in this town. Brushing the thin surface I have found felons, meth head druggy types- or both. Considering that after so many years married and being newly single, well more mature this time around- I have opted to become a work-a-holic and allow Prince Charming to find his way to Williston- allowing the strange to filter out of our beloved city. This still creates the problem of the day, “ WTH to do in WILLISTON?” So I bought a bread maker from a yard sale, well my 10 year old gifted this to me. I could make bread, because of this- soup is also a necessity. When I looked in the fridge for that yummy leftover Thai Coconut Tomato soup, I spotted the left over black beans - then I remembered the chicken bouillon and the Chinese Rice from Chinese Takeout called my name. My excitement peaked a bit as I felt like a contestant on “Chopped”. A smile of sheer child-like excitement stretched over my face as I saw the wilted celery and snack carrots- wow I am so “chef-like” right now!! Knowing in the back of my head I should really start watching more than the Food Channel- my brain sparked at the ideas and this yummy Veggie Explosion was createdand I used all the leftovers that I would have SO left in my fridge. I could be on “Chopped”- a definite contender!! I can hear the judges comment in my creativity, my seasoning perfection- and I digress..... And now, I have the bread machine ready and may even make the brownies I bought at the store during my last adventure in Williston. Cheesy, but my mood has lifted and turned on some tunes and that blast of the “Williston Blues” starts to fade and thoughts of weeknight dinners and marketing ideas start creeping in again through the haze. This place can take it’s toll. Especially when life happens and then this town is as unforgiving.

The key to succeed in this town simple trust and faith. I have enough faith and trust to trust my gut and remember daily why I came here. I was not for a man, or to better my social situation. My dream IS Williston and what this place can do to make my dreams come true- and not care what the masses think. Trusting my gut got me here and finding that lonely place we all visit is not the deal breaker to cry and quit. To understand that everyday is a challenge and that struggle, pain and sacrifice comes with knowing the prize will be even so more sweet. My goals are grand, and I see now I am heading down the right path. Williston makes me stronger and I love that about this place. Some days I want to wallow, but the women here only talk All because they were expecting 6 to 8 inches That’s the latest weather from Williston which has about it over coffee at Lonnie’s while we plan the daily battle- no time for of snow and BITTER COLD? Looking for the wine opener now, I even have Cabernet to go with this wickedly innovative and resourceful Veggie soup and to celebrate my own personal triumph. To entertain myself on a dime in a satisfying and fun way. I think a girl needs to be comfy with her own self and face that boredom with creativity. Well that is what I am telling myself- the latter is hanging at a bar with too many dirty boys... (not good dirty, either)

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): Acting on impulse could be stressful as far as relationships go. Try to avoid purely selfish interests if you can, as they may not win you any fans. However, sharing honest thoughts with a spouse or close friend would be a good use of your energy. As Mercury rewinds as of February 6, it might not be the best time to promote work or business projects or buy big-ticket items. However, if you have no option, try to keep receipts, paperwork, and files, as you may need them.

LEO (Jul 23 – Aug 22) The answer to all your problems might appear to be a quick getaway. Tempting as that may be, it probably won’t resolve your issues in the way that you hope. As Mercury rewinds as of this week, you might find that you’re more in touch with feelings that might have been pushed to the back of your awareness. As you let them surface, you could discover that what you really want isn’t an instant fix but something more intangible and deeply satisfying on a soul level.

GEMINI (May 21 – Jun 21) Mercury rewinds from February 6 until February 28 in your career sector, so this might not be the best time to organize job interviews or crucial meetings with your boss because things might not go as planned. If you need to commit to a plan or project, try to keep track of important documents and paperwork, as you may need them further down the line. Changes at this time could be inevitable. Later, there will be fun, too!

LIBRA (Sep 23 – Oct 22) Could a relationship reach a critical peak this week? The Moon in Aries early on highlights an edgy connection that might push you to do or say something on the spur of the moment. Perhaps you’ve desired change for some time and dream of more stability and greater harmony. In this instance, you might have to take a step in the opposite direction and push for what you want. You may soon get to like your assertive side.

TAURUS (Apr 20 – Mar 20) An ease in expressing your thoughts and emotions could make this a good time to organize a get-together or fun celebration. This can also be a positive work week so long as you don’t try to run the show yourself. Being part of a team can make a difference to your overall progress. Even though someone in authority may be hard to deal with, your patient determination could win them over. Later, take care of a domestic or business matter responsibly, as cutting corners could cause problems.

CANCER (Jun 22- Jul 22) The potential for surprising news on the job or career front could trigger thoughts about what the future holds. This week’s blend of energies could have you on the edge of your seat, yet there is also a possibility of making a few changes of your own that could surprise your boss or employer. However, as Mercury enters its retrograde phase, as of February 6, think carefully before you make any moves. Your time may be better spent researching your options

VIRGO (Aug 23 – Sep 22) This week could get off to a positive start, especially if your social antenna is tuned to suggestions. And you never know - an invitation could lift your spirits. Mercury, your personal planet, marches backward starting this week, so beware of misunderstandings with your partner, love interest, or your latest squeeze. An edgy influence might encourage you to push ahead with a budding romance sooner than is wise. In this instance, it might help to be sensitive to someone’s needs and feelings.

SCORPIO (Oct 23 – Nov 21): You might need to go with the flow as far as a romantic opportunity is concerned, especially if you’ve recently been daydreaming about a love interest. It’s possible your patience could be tested over the coming weeks, as Mercury is retrograde from February 6 to February 28. But this could be an opportunity to pull back and relax a little, move in new circles, and get a feel for whether or not this is right for you. There’s no need to rush!

SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22 – Dec 21): The opposites seem to be at play, bringing pleasure and opportunities for spontaneous fun, as well as a chance to make like a hermit and hide when things get to be too much. If you feel stretched in romance, you might need to retreat to work out your next move. Once you’ve had a chance to recharge, you will be back out there and ready for some more love adventures. Guard against sent or received mixed signals to save embarrassment.

CAPRICORN (Dec 22 – Jan 19): Electronic equipment failures could have you scrambling, especially as Mercury will rewind from this week until February 28. It might help to back up those important files and documents, as this is one of those times when a crucial piece of information could disappear. Aside from this, your love life continues to be lively and positive, although an edgy influence in your home and family sector could highlight a disagreement. Getting this sorted out sooner rather than later will help keep the peace.

AQUARIUS (Jan 20 – Feb 18): You could be a purveyor of inspired ideas that benefit you and others. A lively energy might encourage your curiosity to delve into all kinds of subjects in order to find answers, meaningful connections, and creative opportunities. If an aspect of your life seems to need some extra stimulus, you might locate it when you mingle with folks who are on your same cutting-edge wavelength. Take care with finances, however, as Mercury turns retrograde this week. PISCES (Feb 19 – Mar 20) This might be a good week to get involved in artistic or cultural programs, take in a movie, or dive headlong into a good book. Current influences might also encourage a shopping spree in which you’re attracted to items that spontaneously catch your attention. In this instance, a little budgeting could keep you from overspending. Give yourself a limit and you might find that you have a more enjoyable time seeking those smart bargains.

Deer Management Meetings Announced The State Game and Fish Department has scheduled eight public meetings in February to discuss deer management in North Dakota. Department officials will present an overview of the current deer population and prospects for the future, and look for input on possible options for changes in the way deer licenses are allocated. “We’re all aware that the state’s whitetail and mule deer populations have declined considerably in recent years,” said Game and Fish Department wildlife chief Randy Kreil. “In 2013 we had approximately 40,000 hunters who applied for a deer gun license and didn’t get one. We’re looking at some ideas that might help get more hunters in the field if deer populations remain similar to what they are now.” In the long term, Kreil said Game and Fish’s strategy is to build deer numbers to a point that would provide a reasonable chance for anyone who wants to hunt to be able to get some kind of license. “Right now we have a high public interest in deer hunting in North Dakota,” he said. “We’re hoping to come up with some solutions to help us maintain that.” Each meeting will begin at 7 p.m. local time.
