Why Neo-Isolationism Is Soaring?

There are world-class flirts, and then there are world-class flirts. I’m not one of them. I’m regional at best, and only of a very small region. Like my house. I was thinking about this recently, because I had an interaction with someone who’s known in my circle to be the kind of guy that everyone -- women, men, married women and men, household pets -- have crushes on. I’d met him before and had some brief interactions, but I never quite understood what all the fuss was about. He struck me as warm and cute, but loads of people fit that description. But that was before a recent exchange where, in the course of talking to me, he grabbed the tip of my index finger gently between his thumb and forefinger, held it for a few seconds, looked into my eyes and said, “I know,” in response to something I’d said. It was the strangest gesture -who grabs the tip of your finger? -- yet, it was so oddly intimate and sincere, I had to look around to make sure we were still in a crowded room and my clothes were still on. It was then that I began to realize he’s the best -- or worst, depending on how you look at it -- kind of flirt there is. The kind that isn’t doing it intentionally and probably isn’t even aware of its effect. He likely goes about his day in a haze of fingertip holding and eye contact, which to him is just being friendly, oblivious to all the little connections people feel they’re forging with him. Because that’s what flirtation is -- an isolated transcendent moment of connection that means something to one person and nothing to the other. I think I read that on a needlepoint.

hair and homemade Michael Jackson buttons, that one moment would have probably launched me into a years-long crush. From ages 8-13, I had it bad for a guy I’d had only a few conversations with one summer at tennis camp. He was older and we were paired up to be a doubles team. He told me he noticed when I was up at the net and got scared, I would sometimes close my eyes. He said that maybe that wasn’t the best strategy. He (SET ITAL) got (END ITAL) me! Then he went back to his life and I went back to mine; I’m sure he didn’t give me a second thought and I thought about him all the time. Every time I blew out birthday candles or threw coins into a fountain or played MASH. It was a spectacular day when I walked into the first meeting of drama club as a freshman in high school and there he was. I couldn’t believe my good fortune. Fate had clearly brought us back together! I asked him if he could give me a ride home one day. He was a senior and had his own car. I quickly called my mom to tell her I’d found my own way home. I had big plans. This almost qualified as a date! On the ride home, I reminded him of our shared tennis camp past. I’m not sure what I was expecting. A high five and a marriage proposal? He said he remembered the camp and thought he remembered me but wasn’t sure. Things weren’t going as I hoped. Then he dropped me off and asked a junior to the winter formal. In the course of telling this story, I’m struck by my own naive hopefulness. I had so much to learn -- about everything.

And though in time I became a little Were I 12 or 13, when attracting a mem- more discriminating, I never really did learn ber of the opposite sex seemed an impossible how to flirt. feat despite my myriad jelly bracelets, bi-level

You might need to expect the unexpected - an edgy blend of influences could make for an interesting few days ahead. There’s a chance you could lose your focus on Christmas Eve. A temptation to drop everything and get into party mode may draw you away from necessary tasks and chores. Relationships could be strained on Christmas Day even though you’re trying your hardest to keep the peace. If you can take a flexible approach, the rest of the week could be crazy but fun. Perhaps you have folks visiting from faraway places who are coming to share this festive time with you. Along with the chance to enjoy being together once again, there could be a few revelations - perhaps something you hadn’t anticipated! Even though you may be busy, you’ll also need to be adaptable in order to cope with any surprises. You may be eager to plan a vacation with a friend or loved one in order to enjoy a much-deserved opportunity to relax.

Events

There could be an intense focus showing up for you this week as a lineup of planets occurs in the more sensitive part of your chart. Although this is an opportunity to enjoy yourself and hang out with friends and family, there could be important things to discuss, including a need to make a decision. A social event could bring a surprise that you certainly didn’t expect, which might make the days ahead even more deliciously fun. The end of the week brings an electric meeting that has sizzle power. Jupiter may lift your spirits and encourage you to connect with friends and family for a fun and festive time. You may be in the party spirit on December 24, but try to get ahead of necessary tasks before you dash off into the night. Christmas Day may have you in a spin, especially if an unexpected work issue crops up just as you’re sitting down to dinner. There could be a few disruptive moments later in the week, yet a new door may open as a result.

You might need to prepare a spare room or set extra places at the table, as you might have an unexpected visitor or two. Despite this, there are opportunities for fun, although you may need to be careful if you’re attending an office or work party. A kiss under the mistletoe could turn out to be a mistake later unless you stay ahead of the game. Later in the week a spontaneous decision could lead to an opportunity for a delightful experience. The week ahead seems to positively glow with possibilities for a lively social life. You’ll have opportunities to mingle with friends, family, or business associates and enjoy every moment. However, you might also want to check that your finances are in order so you can avoid any embarrassing surprises when you need your credit card or extra cash. If you budget for unexpected expenses, you can enjoy the days ahead without worry. Remember that having fun doesn’t have to cost a fortune.

As the Sun and Mercury zip into your home zone it looks like you could be doing a lot of entertaining over the week ahead. You may be busy, but that doesn’t mean you have to do everything yourself. Remember to delegate if it gets to be too much. Christmas Day may bring a disruption of some kind or other, so be prepared. A flexible approach and willingness to adapt on the spur of the moment would help. Folks you haven’t seen in some time could show up unexpectedly.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22 – Dec 21): The week ahead has a strong party element, especially as your social life appears to be vital and very exciting. With the wine flowing and kisses under the mistletoe, you’ll certainly enjoy yourself. There’s also the chance of a romantic attraction out of the blue, which could be very tempting. A spontaneous decision could take you on a roller-coaster ride full of fun and delight. Chances are good that it may not last long, but you’ll enjoy it while it does.

A powerful link this week could mean you’re more accident prone than usual. Take extra care when driving or working with machinery. This influence operates on December 24 and December 25, so refuse to rush no matter how hassled you feel. Maintaining a peaceful mindset will help you successfully navigate through these days. You also have many opportunities to connect with friends and family members, especially those you haven’t seen for some time. A reunion may be in the cards with some exciting information thrown into the mix.

This Christmas week can be filled with warmth and happiness, although you’ll need to remain flexible and adaptable to deal with any disruptions around December 24 and December 25. Expect the unexpected. At the same time, it could be these surprising occurrences that make your day that little bit different. Mercury joins the Sun in your sign, so you’ll be eager to help with any organizing. Later, a decision to attend a party may coincide with a delicious meeting.

AQUARIUS (Jan 20 – Feb 18):

A restless feeling might make it hard to focus on festive chores and tasks. Make a to-do list and check things off as you go along. December 25 could bring a message or visit out of the blue that is a little shocking and surprising. How you handle this can either make or break this festive event. A relaxed approach would be your best bet on this occasion. It’s party time later in the week, though a desire to rest and relax shouldn’t be ignored.

PISCES (Feb 19 – Mar 20)

There are plenty of opportunities for fun, enjoyment, and kisses under the mistletoe. This could be a great week as long as you organize your finances so that you can relax without worrying. If you don’t, there’s a chance you could embarrass yourself if your credit card is declined or you don’t have enough cash on hand. Attending to these little details can help make the days ahead very enjoyable. Opportunities for romance or a budding liaison seem to be very much on the agenda. Take full advantage of them!

Column Jim Mullen The Village idiot The Top Ten Top Ten Lists It’s that time of year again for all the Top Ten lists of movies you never saw, music you never heard, TV shows you never watched and books you never read. Not that you didn’t try. You wanted to see that must-see movie all the critics were talking about at Sundance and Cannes but, like the rest of the movies on their Top

Ten list, it never came to your town. Now you can’t remember what it was called, just that it sounded wonderful. But you also remember that, three years ago, you went to a movie that was at the top of everyone’s Top Ten list and you hated it. Why didn’t anyone mention that it was in Dutch with English subtitles? There were some movies you wanted to see this year but they only stayed at the mall for one week and that was the same week Sally at work was sick and you had to fill in for her. Oddly enough, she saw it. Where does she find the time? Then there were all the movies that opened Thanksgiving Day. Why didn’t you go? Oh yeah, you were busy that week cleaning the house and getting the extra bedrooms ready and shopping for stuffing and preparing a Thanksgiving meal and then cleaning up the mess afterwards -- while everyone else went to the movies. Everybody went on Thanksgiving night because the next day was Black Friday and they wanted to shop, not see a movie. Then you got so busy with Christmas cards and making cookies that you still haven’t seen any of the new films. You won’t be able to

go Christmas Day, either, because you’ll be on the road to Grandma’s house and that thing you ordered for Bob never came in the mail so you’ve got to get that straightened out, but you kids, you go see something. The kids have got plenty of time to go to movies. They aren’t spending any of their free time studying, that’s for sure. They act like it’s hard to maintain a grade point average of .02. That’s worth $50,000 a year. Why is it that when you send kids off to college, they come back stupider than when they left? You wouldn’t think it was possible. You didn’t get a chance to hear any of this year’s Top Ten songs, either. When you turn on the radio in the car, they never tell you what song you’re listening to. You’d really like to know so you’ll know what song it is that you’re hating. You’re just now starting to like stuff that was on 1997’s Top Ten list. All the new stuff sounds awful until you’ve heard it about 50 times. By the time you start to like it, it’s an oldie and no one plays it on the radio anymore. So gradually you go back to listening to stuff that was popular when you were in high school. You know you’re officially out of

touch when you go to the wedding of two 20-somethings and you’ve never heard any of the songs they’re dancing to at the reception. The Top Ten Books of the Year? Do you know what it means if you sell a million books in the U.S. of A.? It means 309 million people didn’t buy it. And very, very few people sell a million books. So making a Top Ten List of Books is like making a Top Ten List of Edible Worms. What’s strange is that most small children love books. But when they get to school, we teach them that reading is boring by making them read Shakespeare and Dickens, when we should be “making” them read the Harry Potter and Hunger Games books. Since there is absolutely nothing that can’t be turned into a Top Ten list -Top Ten Back-of-the-Airplane-Seat Magazines, Top Ten Shepherds, Top Ten Roadkill Recipes -- you may wonder why there are so many of them. It’s so we can go to the office party early. Ours is one of the Top Ten in our building
