Second Annual Auction of Services, a fundraiser for Westfield Museum Inc WESTFIELD — The Second Annual Auction of Services, a fundraiser for Westfield Museum Inc., is scheduled to take place on Friday, October 26 at Tekoa Country Club from 5:30 through 7:00 PM. Proceeds from the Auction will be used to construct the Museum’s accessible entryway and to support ongoing operations.

Beginning at 5:30 PM, items to be auctioned will be available for viewing. There is no charge for admission, hot and cold hors d’oeuvres will be served and a cash bar will be available. Bidding will begin at 6:00 PM, supervised by Rock and Carol Palmer, Auctioneers, and continue until 7:00 pm. A variety of services, including a personalized family history, auto detailing, carpet cleaning and a steak-andshrimp dinner have been donated.

Westfield Museum Inc. is in the process of establishing a working museum within its property at 360 Elm Street.

Presently home to an extensive collection of machinery and artifacts dating from the U.S. Industrial Revolution, which encompassed most of the 19th century, the Museum plans to open to the public to celebrate Westfield’s 350th Anniversary in 2019.

‘Male Call!’ Fitness Class at Westfield Senior Center Greg Hannum, a senior Movement Science major at Westfield State University, facilitates ‘Male Call!,’ an all-male fitness class at the Westfield Senior Center on Monday mornings from 9 to 10 a.m. The cost is $5 per class on a pay-as-you-go basis. ‘Weight Watchers’ Senior Center Group Beginning in September, the Westfield Senior Center, 45 Noble Street, will be the host site for a twelve-week Weight Watchers pilot program. Meetings will be held on Wednesday afternoons from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. The cost is $156, paid in advance, which averages $13 per session. Meetings consist of a weigh-in and discussion of a particular topic lead by the group facilitator. Weight Watchers products will also be available for purchase. If you have an interest in participating in such a group, please contact Senior Center Program Director, Mary Lou Niedzielski, at 562-6435.

Home Evaluation Offered The Westfield Council On Aging and the Occupational Therapy Department at Springfield College will once again collaborate to offer a limited number of older adults in Westfield a unique home assessment opportunity. Pairs of students determine the level of safety and convenience in the home of their assigned older participant by conducting a home visit and an interview. The students address problem areas and make recommendations in a written report that is reviewed by the class professor, Dr. Joan Simmons.

Participants receive a copy of the report so that they can implement any of the recommendations if they choose to do so. This is a wonderful opportunity for older adults with any mobility or sensory limitations to discover how they might function more easily and independently at home. VHS to DVD-R fundraiser for Gateway film studio Gateway’s Video Production class continues to raise funds for new equipment and other needs. They are converting home videos and educational videos from VHS to DVD as a yearlong fundraiser. The class provides videos of current events on the district website, and also creates film for video competitions, generates music videos and movie remakes. The cost is $10 for the first conversion, and additional DVDs of the same item are just $5.

Under copyright laws, television shows and movies that have been taped cannot be converted. Educators’ school videos are free (limit 5)!

Converting a VHS to DVD should take approximately 1-2 weeks, unless more than 10 tapes have been submitted—that could take up to 4 weeks. VHS tapes should be brought to the High School Office. For more information, contact Christine O’Malley by emailing comalley@grsd. org.

Westfield Homeless Cat Project The Westfield Homeless Cat Project is delighted to offer even more opportunities to meet and greet our fabulous felines available for adoption! Adoption days and hours are now as follows:

Events at the Southwick Public Library Memoir Writing Workshop for Senior Citizens: The Southwick Public Library has received a grant from Sarah Gillett Services for the Elderly, Inc. making it possible to offer a three-part memoir writing workshop for senior citizens. The Council can only accept applications online from individuals, organizations and schools – deadline for applications is October 15th. The on-line application can be completed and submitted at www.mass-cultural.org, The online application process is simple asking applicants for basic budget information and the scope of a project.

Zip One Book Symposium at the Agawam Public Library The Zip One Book Symposium will be held at the Agawam Library on Tuesday, October 16, 2018 at 7:00 p.m. in the library’s Community Room. This season’s book title is Beartown by best-selling author Fredrik Backman.

At its core, Beartown is a story about a one-high school town, much like our own. In such a community, the health of the high school is crucial to the health of the whole town and vice versa. This story is told through the experience of Beartown’s hockey team- a winning team with big dreams. As the reader learns, the themes that resonate within the heart and soul of this fictional community could have been meaningfully told through any of the many sports or activities that are important to the high school.

Small town hopes and dreams collide with real-life consequences and creates a soulsearching read in Beartown.

The Zip One Book Symposium is a community group that began three years ago as a community-wide book discussion group.

Westfield State University to hold third annual Henry Wefing Memorial Golf Classic Westfield State University will hold the third annual Henry Wefing Memorial Golf Classic on October 19 at 11 a.m. at Tekoa Country Club in Westfield. Co-sponsored by the University’s Communication Department and the Division of Institutional Advancement, proceeds from this fundraiser will benefit the Henry Wefing Journalism Scholarship Fund.

Dr. Wefing was a journalist for 20 years for several newspapers before he began teaching at Westfield State in 1985.

Dr. Wefing taught journalism and writing courses for almost 30 years until his passing in 2015. The scholarship was created by faculty and family members in memory of Dr. Wefing’s dedication to students and to the journalism field. Since 2016, the Henry Wefing Journalism Scholarship has been awarded annually to students pursuing a journalism-related career.

Tournament participation is $65 for students, $90 for individuals, or $350 per foursome. All prices include lunch and 18 holes of golf. Corporate sponsorships are also available, including promotional options. Online registration and payment to participate is required by Friday, October 12. The objective of the award is to recognize individuals or groups who have embodied the characteristics of Rotary’s motto of “Service above Self.” In making the announcement, Fox said “Rotary selects individuals and groups who have demonstrated excellence and have performed service that results in long-lasting value to the community, programs that support the elderly, the less fortunate, the environment, and most importantly our youth and future leaders of the community.”

The awards program was introduced in 1996 and to date has recognized 64 individuals and five nonprofit organizations from Southwick and the surrounding communities. What is the difference between necromancy and ghost hunting? What are the signs of a demonic possession? While it is believed that only a very small percentage of paranormal activity is actu-

ally caused by demons and their like (at least outside of Hollywood), it is unquestionably a very popular subject.

In this program, the Agawam Paranormal team will try to separate fact from fiction to see how it all fits together.

Following the presentation, the team will have three workstations set up for attendees to experience some of the most popular equipment used in paranormal investigations.

The Agawam Historical Association (AHA), a 501(c) (3) non- profit organization, has been part of the Agawam community for many years with the mission to preserve the Town’s history and artifacts and educate the citizens of Agawam. The Thomas Smith House, located in Feeding Hills, is the oldest existing house in Agawam (circa 1757) and was purchased by the AHA. The Fire House Museum on Elm Street, houses antique fire trucks and apparatus on the ground floor and contains artifacts, memorabilia and exhibits from Agawam and neighboring areas on the second floor.

Portland-based NW Dance Project debuts at UMass Amherst Fine Arts Center Cutting-edge Portland-based company, NW Dance Project, debuts at the UMass Fine Arts Center on Tuesday, October 30 at 7:30 pm in the Fine Arts Center Concert Hall. Led by acclaimed dancer and choreographer Sarah Slipper, the company brings a mixed rep program of stunning choreography for their debut appearance at the Fine Arts Center. Local Tribute Artists Perform to Benefit Breast Cancer Unit On November 3th, Crestview Country Club in Agawam, Ma will play host to a unique music event and dinner featuring five of the region’s favorite tribute acts. THE GREAT PRETENDERS will be emceed by Jimmy Mazz with the proceeds from the show to benefit the patients of Mercy Medical Center Breast Cancer Unit.

This event first began in 2016, when The Great Pretenders performed and donated $12,000 directly to the patients of Mercy’s Breast Cancer Unit. 2016 was even more successful with a donation of $16,000. The donations go to patient needs like buying their groceries, paying the rent or bills they may be behind on, even purchasing wigs, which are not normally covered by insurance.

Appearing will be, in no particular order, Kenny LaBelle (Neil Diamond), Steve Kareta (Jimmy Buffet), Ben Ashley (Buddy Holly), Rick Larrimore (Rod Stewart), and Sandra LaCaresse (Stevie Nicks.) All of the performers will be accompanied by live music courtesy of The Diamond Collection. Doors open at 5:00 p.m., dinner is at 6:00 pm and the show starts at 7:300 pm. There will be auctions and raffles. Admission is $80 pp and includes dinner and reserved seating. For tickets, call 413-977-3019.

Southwick Lions to host Comedy Night Fund Raiser A standup comedy night will be held on Saturday November 3, 2018 at the Southwick Rec Center, 61 Powder Mill Road, featuring three comedians from Funny Money Comedy.

The two comics that will headline and feature are Nonye Brown-West and Billy Winn.

Doors will open at 6:00 PM with a cash bar, food, and raffle. Food will be served at 6:30 and the show will begin at 8:00 PM. Tickets are $30 and can be purchased by calling Lion Cliff at 413-569-3447. Advanced ticket purchase is highly recommended. A limited number of tickets may be available at the door.

Donations received by the Southwick Lions Club are returned to the community in the form of scholarships, aid due to financial constraints to those in need of glasses or hearing aids, and financing research for sight, hearing, and diabetes. Funding has also been provided to the local food pantry, schools, police department, fire department, and to local and national catastrophes.

The Southwick Lions Club thanks you for all your past support. We look forward to our future events and your continued support.
