The goal of this non-credit certificate program, offered at the University since 1991, is to provide students with the knowledge, skills, and techniques necessary for the successful treatment of individuals and families afflicted by alcoholism and/or other drug addictions. To help with this mission, Westfield State University has expanded its ACE program to be offered in a new location in Pittsfield. The program aims to train potential counselors in the Berkshires area with the goal of filling critical positions in treatment facilities that are currently understaffed and unable to fill open positions. Classes for the Berkshires program will begin in March 2020 and conclude in November. Applications for both programs are available online at www.westfield.ma.edu/ace. made by leaving a message at 862-6205, by the Sunday before.

WESTFIELD —The YMCA of Greater Westfield is offering the fastest growing group fitness phenomenon inspired by the sweatdripping, infectious, energizing fun of drumming! POUND is a full body cardio jam session championed by fitness rebels around the world. Pound is the brainchild of Kirsten Potenza and Cristina Peerenboom, California-based former drummers who set out to fuse conditioning moves and cardio interval training with the distracting fun of drumming. Instead of listening to music, you become the music in this exhilarating full-body workout that combines cardio, conditioning, and strength training with yoga and pilates-inspired movements. Using Ripstix®, lightly weighted drumsticks engineered specifically for exercising, POUND transforms drumming into an incredibly effective way of working out. Designed for all fitness levels, POUND provides the perfect atmosphere for letting loose, getting energized, toning up and rockin’ out! The workout is easily modifiable and the alternative vibe and welcoming philosophy appeals to all abilities. Sweat, Sculpt, & ROCK with POUND at the YMCA on Thursdays 6:30PM and Saturdays at 9:15AM. England Dance & Gymnastics Centers in Westfield, MA and Granby, CT has been devoted to dancers and their families for the past 38 years. Owner/Director Loree Cloud and Co-Directors Hayley Cloud and Ashley Williams, as well as their entire adult professionally trained teaching staff, strive for the best dance training in a fun, nurturing learning environment. Keeping with this tradition of excellence has lead NEDC to be named one of the top 50 dance studios in the country, as well as MassLive’s “Best Studio” in Western MA.

ur We Love O nds ! Da n ce F rie

The NEDC studio has three large first floor dance rooms with large viewing windows into every room, as well as free Wi-Fi throughout the building. We offer a large variety of both recreational and competitive programs, for all levels and any gender, from our Tiny Tutus and Twinkle Toes Dance (combination classes for our younger dancer) through adults; and including styles such as Broadway jazz, hip-hop, tumbling, ballet, contemporary, and tap. We truly love kids and want to bring the dance experience to anyone who loves to dance! Our dancers and their families come together for our renowned annual 90-minute recitals; the highlight of our dance year and every dancer receives a trophy to celebrate their hard work. Being the unique studio that offers over 35 recreational classes per week, NEDC also houses one of the most sought out pre-professional competitive programs in the country. Within this past year, Jade Cloud will appear as a dancer in the soon to be released movie, “High Strung: Free Dance”, Westfield Native, Josh Burrage continued his Broadway career traveling with the national tour of “A Bronx Tale” and former student, Nick Burrage debuted in the national tour of “Cats”. Most recently, Brianna Roland, alumni

of NEDC, earned a spot as a Celtics Dancer with the professional basketball team, the Boston Celtics. We have also had many students appear on Dance Moms, Broadway, the Radio City Christmas Spectacular, the London Ballet, and numerous national and international tours.

To cap off this remarkable year, our competition teams headed to the prestigious Star Systems National Dance Competition in Myrtle Beach, SC to compete against the best dancers in North America. Our dancers claimed the covenant titles of highest scoring 12 and under group as well as highest scoring 13 and over group amongst thousands of entries. This success proceeds a fantastic competition season, in which NEDC was name top studio at every regional event. In addition to numerous national titles, our dancers were awarded over $100,000 in college scholarships, from varying organizations to continue their dance education. When Kim Starsiak founded All-Stars Dance Center 25 years ago, it was the culmination of her lifelong dreams.

Starsiak, a Westfield native who started dancing practically the minute she started walking, had danced across the country, won numerous awards and titles and been in the spotlight her entire life. She wanted to share that feeling of accomplishment with children and opened her doors to give joy to young people.

Sunday. August 4, 2019 - 15

All-Stars Dance Center Recreational and Competitive Dancers...

“I love dancing to this day, but even more I love watching young dancers grow,” Starsiak said. For some dancers, that could mean nailing a difficult turn. For others it could mean overcoming stage fright. And for some, it’s about following their dreams and

bringing home that trophy. While teaching dance, Starsiak also teaches about community. “Giving back and being part of the community is so important to me and to all the staff at AllStars,” Starsiak said.

25th Year!! Our beautiful facility, with all wood floors and viewing windows in all four rooms, is in the same complex as Roots Gymnastics Center and Roots Aquatics & Fitness Center.

All-Stars Dance Center participates in events all year long, including city parades and festivals. All-Stars also hosts fundraisers for causes near and dear to instructors’ hearts. “It’s really about positively connecting with people,” Starsiak said. “Here, we connect through dance and it brings me to tears when I see a shy student shine or the bonds these children form with each other and with us – we are one big family.” All-Stars Dance Center has highly successful competitive dancers as well as recreational students who just love to dance. With classes in every style of dance, there are opportunities to try something new for students age 18 months to adult. Classes range from Tiny Tots to Hip Hop, Lyrical, Ballet and more. All-Stars, located at 209 Root Road, also has the convenience of access to Roots Gymnastics and Roots Aquatics and offers combination classes, including a Mermaid dance/swim class. Starsiak and her team focus on individual instruction even in a group setting and make each student feel special. Student personalities and preferences are taken into consideration and encouragement, praise and challenging instruction are key to each class. “Every dancer can feel like a star, and that’s our goal at every age level and ability,” Starsiak said. 5 Reasons Why Dancing is Great Exercise Are you the type of person that hates to go to the gym?

Creative Outlet...

You are free to invent new forms, choose your own music, and even put makeup and costume to your dance routines. Wearing a costume while jogging would illicit some very strange looks.

Does the mere thought of having to run on a treadmill make you shudder with distaste? Let’s be honest, running on a treadmill isn’t the most exciting exercise. Watching TV while simultaneously jogging can make the effort somewhat more endurable. After years of doing the same exercises, your body adjusts to the exercise and it doesn’t have the same beneficial effects. If you are sick of the same boring exercise routines, you should consider taking up dance. It’s a sport that both men and women can enjoy and benefit from. Here’s why:

Aerobic and Anaerobic...

Dance is a great form of exercise because it provides you with both aerobic and anaerobic movements. Our bodies need a combination of both types of exercise in order to be at their healthiest. In dance, aerobic exercise can be achieved by jumping,

Improve Flexibility...

swaying, twirling, etc. Anaerobic exercises include holding squat positions, lifting someone else or your own body, and balancing.

Constantly Changing...

Once you get the basics down, a whole world of options will open up to you. You can try formal dance moves, such as the steps of ballroom dances or ballet. If you are more interested in trying out more modern-style dances, you can expand upon hip-hop or jazz moves. Dancing is far less boring than jogging on the same old treadmill everyday.

Dancing stretches your body in new ways that you’ve never tried before. Improved flexibility is great for your body’s physical health, because it reduces your chances of injury in a fall or sprain, and speeds up the time it takes your muscles to heal after a workout.

Music Inspires...

With dance, music can change from slow to fast to pauses, all in a matter of seconds. It’s your job to keep up! Your freedom of music choice is nearly endless when you are looking for something to dance to! Even classical musical can get your arms and legs flowing. There are endless possibilities when it comes to getting a complete workout through dance.

Dance Works - No matter what you are looking to get out of Dance, they can provide that for you! While

providing a strong technical foundation is important to us, having fun & sharing our love of dance is key to our studio! Dance Works is about to begin its 32nd season of dance. We have a lot of passion for dance and love sharing our knowledge of this beautiful art form with our students. Through encouragement and support we help them achieve their goals to become the dancer that they desire to be. At Dance Works we have both competitive and recreational classes that are taught by the same staff. And we have a unique system where the teachers alternate classrooms which allow them to teach each student in the studio. We also have large viewing windows so parents can watch the progress of their child at any time. We believe in building a strong foundation for our students. Through the years our dancers have won many awards, scholarships and titles; however, it is their character both on and off the stage that we are most proud of. Some of our dancers have gone on to dance professionally with credits that include; New England Patriot Cheerleader, Legends In Concert, Britney Spears “Piece Of Me” Show, The Voice dancer, Dancing With The Stars, and they have also appeared in commercials and videos as well. Many of our other

students have been on their college dance teams, and some think of us when they dance on their wedding day. Dance can give a child so much more than just the skills that are learned. Students gain self-confidence, determination, setting goals, counting on others and being counted on in return and respect. Dance is a place of self-expression and freedom. Many of our students have also made amazing friendships at dance. In a way it becomes a home away from home for many of our students. Our recreational classes are on our website as well as online registration. We have both single and combo classes- students in these classes have two performances in the recital but get to use the same costume. If you add hip hop to any other class, hip hop is only $25 per month. New this year, we are offering a “Mommy & Me” class for those students who are still a little shy and feel more comfortable with mom in the room. I believe no matter what you are looking to get out of dance, we can provide that for you. Come join our dance family! Please feel free to contact me, Pam, at 413-568-4756 or message me through our website DanceWorksWestfield.com and I will be happy to help you!

‘Side By Side’ Support Group at the Westfield Senior Center

Ballroom Dance at the Senior Center

WESTFIELD —The Westfield Senior Center’s ‘Side By Side’ support group meets on the fourth Friday of the month from 9:30 to 11 a.m. and is open to any senior who is a little overwhelmed with the stresses of life. Whether an older adult is dealing with health problems, the loss of close family members and friends, or caregiver responsibilities, the support of others, often “in the same boat,” can be most helpful. Participants chat informally over coffee or tea and all discussions are strictly confidential. Please consider joining the group as a “regular” or a “drop-in.” For more information, call Tina Gorman at the Senior Center, 562-6435. The Westfield Senior Center is located at 45 Noble Street.

WESTFIELD —Do you enjoy ballroom dancing? On the fourth Monday of every month from 2 to 4 p.m., the Westfield Senior Center Great Room is the hot spot to trip the light fantastic! Couples and singles have the opportunity to dance the afternoon away. Local favorite musician, Richie Mitnick provides the live music each month. The cost is $3 per person on a pay-as-you-go basis. No advance sign-ups are necessary. The Westfield Senior Center is located at 45 Noble Street.

Nursing Services at the Westfield Senior Center WESTFIELD —Nursing services are available at the Westfield Senior Center, 45 Noble Street, thanks to the generosity of Baystate Noble Hospital. Mary Ellen Asher, RN, is at the Senior Center Tuesday and Friday mornings from 9 a.m. to noon and can assist older adults with blood pressure checks, medication review, blood glucose testing, and one-to-one health education. There is no charge for this service and no advance appointments are necessary.

Westfield Senior Center’s ‘Heaven’s Angels’ Project WESTFIELD —Michelle Moniz coordinates a group at the Westfield Senior Center who sew ‘angel’ gowns for newborns who never make it home from the hospital. The white angel gowns are made from wedding gowns and offer comfort to strangers coping with the death of a child from miscarriage, stillbirth, or through neonatal loss. The baby gown is used to present the infants to their families as they say a final farewell before burial or cremation. The ‘Heaven’s Angels’ group meets on the first Monday of the month from 1 to 4:30 p.m. at the Westfield Senior Center, 45 Noble Street. Participants should feel free to bring a portable sewing machine, sewing scissors, and pins. Those who don’t sew can participate by dismantling wedding gowns as well as tracing and cutting patterns. Please call the Westfield Senior Center Program Director, Mary Lou Niedzielski at 562-6435, to sign up or get additional information about the program.

~ MIC ~

~ Gretta ~

Mic is a handsome boy that craves attention and interactions with his people. He is looking for a home that someone has time to spend with him. Mic seems to do well with other social kitties so a home with one would be great! No kids or older children would be best. Come to Westfield Animal Shelter and ask to see Mic!

Gretta is a 2 year old barn cat. She is looking for a new barn, as the place she called home was not a safe environment. If you have a nice spot that she can wander and chase mice, she would be most appreciative! She is spayed, up to date on vaccines and likes the company of other cats! Come to Westfield Animal Shelter to meet Gretta!

For more information please call (413) 564-3129 or stop by the Westfield Regional Animal Shelter 178 Apremont Way, Westfield, MA

Westfield Senior Center Offers ‘Real Estate Reality’ WESTFIELD —Are you an older adult who is thinking of buying or selling a house, downsizing, and want to know your options? It’s never too soon to begin exploring and gathering information for the future. Experienced Realtor and Friends of the Westfield Senior Center Board member Lesley Lambert is at the Senior Center on the second Wednesday of every month from 12:30 to 1 p.m. on the ‘Deck’ of the Great Room to get you started in the process or answer any real estate questions that you might have. No advance signups are necessary.

Chess at the Westfield Senior Center WESTFIELD —Each Monday afternoon from 1 to 3 p.m., a small dedicated group of Chess players gathers for one of the quietest activities at the Westfield Senior Center. Les Hutton offers Chess instruction and guidance to anyone who is interested in learning the game. No prior experience is necessary and Chess sets are provided. Lessons are tailored to the participant’s abilities and goals. Experienced players can always enjoy a friendly game and helpful advice. The benefits of the game are numerous. Chess helps to improve memory, concentration, logical thinking, and creativity. But most importantly, it’s an enjoyable way to exercise your brain! Drop in and join the group any Monday afternoon. The Westfield Senior Center is located at 45 Noble Street.
