Cleo’s Egyptian Tale from Little Red Wagon WESTFIELD — On August 2, University of New Hampshire’s Little Red Wagon, the longest running nonprofit, children’s theatre tour in the U.S. will be presenting “Cleo’s Egyptian Tale”. Go along with Cleo on an Egyptian journey to save her kidnapped sister Furiah. Help her cross the Nile, making her way through the desert and past the Sphinx, whose riddle helps Cleo rescue her sister. On this unexpected quest, Cleo crosses paths with a variety of creatures who teach her important lessons
about acceptance and friendship. Friday Mornings for Children are held in the Beveridge Pavilion Annex from 10:00 am to 11:00 am, weather permitting, and are free of charge. Rotary Southwick to bring The Rich Badowski Blues Band, The Savage Brothers, and blues legend James Montgomery to Whalley Park WESTFIELD — On July 17, Rotary will kick off its concert series at Whalley Park, hosting Rich Badowski and his blues band. On July 24, The Savage Brothers funkin’ rockin’ rhythm’ band will perform, and on August 14, blues legend James Montgomery will take the stage. Admission is free. Goldfinches and Red Wing Blackbirds are the expected visitors for us to see. MEET AT BRAY LAKE. SATURDAY, July 27, 1p.m. HIKE TO THE LOST BOULDER. This two hour+ hike travels on a number of trails to find the lost boulder. Why is it lost? How did it get there? Find out the answers to many questions as we travel on this moderately strenuous hike. Bring water and bug spray. SUNDAY, July 28, 10:30 a.m. BIRDING FOR BEGINNERS. This one hour program is meant to help beginners learn the basics of birding. The use of bird guides, lists and binoculars are used to learn about these feathered creatures. SUNDAY, July 28, 1p.m. SUNDAY AFTERNOON FAMILY PROGRAM. The title for this week’s program is “OWL PROWL”. This program will take a close look at this avian hunting machine of the woods. As we walk around a Barred Owl’s habitat maybe the call of this mysterious bird can be heard. MONDAY, July 29, 10:30 a.m. JUNIOR RANGERS. Children ages 5-6 are welcome to participate in this 4 week program to become a certified Junior Ranger. Through exploration, crafts and games, participants can receive an official Junior Ranger patch and certificate. Each child must attend 3 out of 4 classes to qualify for this status. MONDAY, July 29, 1p.m. ADVANCED HIKE FOR SENIORS. Seniors and others who want more of a challenging hike can join in on this one-two hour hike up one of the more strenuous trails. The hike on these trails is at a slower pace to accommodate this age bracket. Bring water. TUESDAY, July 30, 10:30 a.m. SENIOR HIKE. Seniors can join in on this easy paced one hour hike. The terrain is mostly easy and the nature talk quite abundant. Bring water and bug spray TUESDAY, July 30, 2p.m. EXPLORERS CLUB. This weekly 1-2 hour program lets children ages 10-14 learn map reading skills, trail markings and proper hiking techniques as we travel on all the trails here at Mt. Tom. Plus of course nature is observed closely. Bring water and bug spray. These programs are sponsored by the Department of Conservation and Recreation and are free and open to the public. Westfield Rotary Food Fest 2019
WESTFIELD — The annual Food Fest sponsored by the Rotary Club of Westfield will return to Elm Street for a fifth year on Friday and Saturday, August 23 and 24, bringing music, food and entertainment downtown. The event will begin on Friday at 5 p.m. and continue until 10 p.m. On Saturday it will start at noon and close at 9 p.m. The Food Fest will feature non-stop entertainment with local bands performing on two stages. New activities this year include a climbing wall provided by the Boy Scout Council of Western Massachusetts and there will be games at the south end of Elm Street after 3 p.m. on Saturday, including “cornhole”. The classic car show will return this year from noon until 3 p.m. on Saturday. Food for the fest will be provided by returning vendors including Janik’s Pierogis, Alo Saigon, Skyline Trading Company, Puks Grill, Moe’s Donuts, Bottega Cucina Tia Food, Angelo’s Fried Dough, Tatter Tots, Moolicious Ice Cream, Pandolfi Kettle Corn, The Boys and Girls Club of Westfield, The Boy Scouts, The Westfield Kiwanis Club, Little George’s and the North Elm Butcher Block. Other vendors will offer a variety of non-food items. The Rotary Club will offer beer and malt beverages from two beverage wagons. This year, the club will stage a complimentary wine tasting on both nights, 6 - 9 p.m., adjacent to the south stage. The 2018 Food Fest brought about 10,000 participants to the city’s downtown for the free event and organizers hope to exceed that number this year. The event would not be possible without the support of the city’s administration and the club’s organizers would like to recognize and thank the workers from the several city departments whose unsung efforts contribute greatly to the success of the Food Fest. Faith on Fire Catholic Rally FEEDING HILLS — The seventh annual Faith on Fire Catholic Rally will be held on our beautiful grounds of Sacred Heart Parish in Feeding Hills, August 22 and 23 from 6pm – 9pm. WSU to offer Addiction Counselor Education program WESTFIELD — The College of Graduate and Continuing Education at Westfield State University is accepting applications for the 2019–20 Addiction Counselor Education (ACE) program. Classes will be held on weekends and evenings starting in September and ending in May 2020. The goal of this non-credit certificate program, offered at the University since 1991, is to provide students with the knowledge, skills, and techniques necessary for the successful treatment of individuals and families afflicted by alcoholism and/or other drug addictions. This program has been highly instrumental in the professional development of individuals in the western Massachusetts area whom are either working in or interested in the growing healthcare field of addiction services. To help with this mission, Westfield State University has expanded its ACE program to be offered in a new location in Pittsfield. The program aims to train potential counselors in the Berkshires area with the goal of filling critical positions in treatment facilities that are currently understaffed and unable to fill open positions. Classes for the Berkshires program will begin in March 2020 and conclude in November. Applications for both programs are available online at www.westfield.ma.edu/ace. The Grandparents’ Day Celebration is scheduled for Saturday, September 7 from 10 – 1 in Stanton Hall. The event will feature fun activities for grandparents and their grandchildren.
