“Be Aware, Be Prepared!” Packets Available

The thought of preparing for disasters or emergencies can be overwhelming. Planning is key! The Medical Reserve Corps of Hampden County has prepared a family records packet to assist in the planning process. The document is extensive but simple to complete. “Be Aware, Be Prepared!” packets are available at the Westfield Senior Center, 45 Noble Street. Once completed, the document should be kept in a clear watertight plastic bag, ready to be taken with you in the event of a disaster if you need to evacuate your home. It is the hope of the Medical Reserve Corps that you will never have to use the “Be Aware, Be Prepared!” document. But hope is not a plan!

WESTFIELD - Stanley Park, 400 Western Avenue, Westfield, is excited to announce that efforts are underway in planning the 11th annual fundraising event; Birthday in the Park ~ Celebrating Our 70th! This year’s fundraiser will support the repair of Stanley Park’s Rose Garden Fountain. The fountain, located at the center of the Stanley Park Rose & Flower Garden, is one of the most popular landmarks in the park and has served as the backdrop for countless engagement and wedding photos through the years. Surrounded by over 30 varieties of roses and several hundred rose bushes as well as variety of spectacular annual and perennial gardens the fountain has collected millions of wishes from its visitors since the park was founded. To help our visitors continue to enjoy this original and iconic feature of Stanley Park, the fountain must undergo some much-needed repairs. The success of the event will rely on ticket sales, sponsorships and donated items for the live and silent auctions. Westfield State hosts fourth annual farm-to-table fundraising dinner

SAVE WITH THE PENNYSAVER

WESTFIELD - Westfield State University Department of Communication will host a farm-to-table dinner on Sunday, August 25, from 5 to 8 p.m. on the grounds of the Horace Mann Center located at 333 Western Avenue in Westfield. Titled “Dinner at Henry’s Garden,” the event honors the late Dr. Henry Wefing, professor emeritus of communication, who served the University for 30 years. Proceeds will benefit the Henry Wefing Journalism Scholarship, which has been awarded annually since 2016. The menu will feature locally-sourced ingredients. Menu options include roast beef with arugula, wild mushroom polenta, goat cheese and strawberry crostini, and smoked salmon for appetizers; a vegetarian option or grilled barbecue chicken with vegetable and salad options for dinner; and summer plum upside down cake for dessert. Diners will be seated for dinner next to the garden Dr. Wefing planted in 2007. He used to donate the produce to the Westfield Food Pantry. Today, the garden is maintained by volunteers, including faculty, staff and students. Sponsored by MassLive, The Westfield News, Pennysaver, and Jerome’s Party Plus/Taylor Rental, the event will feature food prepared by Westfield State Dining Executive Chef Mary Reilly, a gold medalist in a 2018 American Culinary Federation-sanctioned culinary competition. She is a frequent guest on WWLP’s Mass Appeal, the former publisher of Edible Pioneer Valley and the co-author of Home Sausage Making (Storey Press, 2017). A portion of the dinner will be prepared outside on site and Reilly will be available to meet guests, answer questions, and discuss the food and the importance of using locally-sourced ingredients. The event aligns with the University’s commitment to provide local, sustainable food to its campus community. In 2016, Westfield State launched a self-operating dining services system based on a farm-to-fork model. Today, Westfield State Dining partners with more than 30 local farmers and food producers. Dinner tickets are $60 and must be purchased in advance, as seating is limited and the event has sold out each year. To purchase tickets or view the full menu, visit www.westfieldalumni. org/henrysgarden. For more information or to discuss dietary needs, contact Suzanne Boniface, adjunct professor of communication at 413-478-2652 or sboniface@westfield.ma.edu.

Ice in August at the Jasper Rand Art Gallery

Littleville PreK openings

Cool off with Ice in August at the Jasper Rand Art Gallery in the Westfield Athenaeum. Artist John Briggs exhibits 50 of his prints and describes them as: “2016 was a winter of many temperature changes and little snow. As the ice around my house in the Granville woods formed and melted and formed again, I found myself spending hours with my cameras foraging for the spirits, creatures and secret beings who took shape in the ice around the edges and surface of my small backyard pond, in the potholes and drainage ditches of the road I run on at the Cobble Mountain Reservoir, and in the creeks of the Granville Forest. Native Americans know that the natural world is alive with spirits who are also the people and their ancestors. Some days I imagined my camera view frame as a window in which I saw—via various angles of reflected light—the Ur structures of reality: fleeting fluid and skeletal forms that lie beneath the skin of our familiar world where such items as ice seem merely commonplace. These curious “ice spirits,” as I call them, taught me many things. They communicated incisively, though exactly what they conveyed remains far more nuanced than any words. Perhaps viewers can grasp something of what they’re saying from the pictures they let me make of them on those winter days.” The Gallery is open all Library hours Monday-Thursday 8:30-8:00 and Friday 8:30-5:00. www.westath.org or 413-568-7833.

The Preschool program at Littleville Elementary has openings in its afternoon preschool program for children who are age 3 on or before September 4, 2019. The program is free. Children will attend on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 12:40 – 3:10 p.m. Families must provide transportation to and from preschool (there is no bus available). Preschool screening is required for enrollment. Fall screenings will take place on August 28. The first day of preschool will be Wednesday, September 4. The College of Graduate and Continuing Education at Westfield State University is accepting applications for the 2019–20 Addiction Counselor Education (ACE) program. Classes will be held on weekends and evenings starting in September and ending in May 2020. The goal of this non-credit certificate program, offered at the University since 1991, is to provide students with the knowledge, skills, and techniques necessary for the successful treatment of individuals and families afflicted by alcoholism and/or other drug addictions. To help with this mission, Westfield State University has expanded its ACE program to be offered in a new location in Pittsfield. The program aims to train potential counselors in the Berkshires area with the goal of filling critical positions in treatment facilities that are currently understaffed and unable to fill open positions. Classes for the Berkshires program will begin in March 2020 and conclude in November. Applications for both programs are available online at www. westfield.ma.edu/ace. “Male Call!” Fitness Class at Westfield Senior Center

Greg Hannum, a Westfield State University Movement Science graduate, facilitates “Male Call!” an all-male fitness class at the Westfield Senior Center on Monday and Wednesday mornings from 9 to 10 a.m. The cost is $5 per class on a pay-as-you-go basis. This is a general fitness class designed specifically for older men with a variety of fitness abilities. Please remember that participants utilizing the Fitness Room for classes and dance sessions are required to change their footwear before walking on the hardwood floor and also sign a Release of Liability and Usage Agreement. For more information, contact the Westfield Senior Center at 562-6435.

Westfield Senior Center’s “Heaven’s Angels” Project

'Side By Side' Support Group at the Westfield Senior Center

Michelle Moniz coordinates a group at the Westfield Senior Center who sew “angel” gowns for newborns who never make it home from the hospital. The white angel gowns are made from wedding gowns and offer comfort to strangers coping with the death of a child from miscarriage, stillbirth, or through neonatal loss. The baby gown is used to present the infants to their families as they say a final farewell before burial or cremation. The “Heaven’s Angels” group meets on the first Monday of the month from 1 to 4:30 p.m. at the Westfield Senior Center, 45 Noble Street. Participants should feel free to bring a portable sewing machine, sewing scissors, and pins. Those who don’t sew can participate by dismantling wedding gowns as well as tracing and cutting patterns. Please call the Westfield Senior Center Program Director, Mary Lou Niedzielski at 562-6435, to sign up or get additional information about the program.

The Westfield Senior Center’s “Side By Side” support group meets on the fourth Friday of the month from 9:30 to 11 a.m. and is open to any senior who is a little overwhelmed with the stresses of life. Whether an older adult is dealing with health problems, the loss of close family members and friends, or caregiver responsibilities, the support of others, often “in the same boat,” can be most helpful. Participants chat informally over coffee or tea and all discussions are strictly confidential. Please consider joining the group as a “regular” or a “drop-in.” For more information, call Tina Gorman at the Senior Center, 562-6435. The Westfield Senior Center is located at 45 Noble Street.
