WFE grants will fund a variety of activities during the current school year, including an elementary level astronomy program and before school health and fitness program, a high school level multi-year mural project, and a middle school level extracurricular reading program. “All of the money raised by WFE will right back to Westfield public schoolchildren,” said WFE President Amber Danahey. “It will be a fun night out for a good cause with some wonderful prizes.” In addition to the trivia contest and raffle, organizers will hold an auction that will be of particular interest to parents with graduating seniors. “Both the high school and vocational school have donated four reserved seats to the 2015 graduation ceremony,” said Mrs. Danahey. “It’s tough to get seats to either graduation; I think this will be a popular auction item.”

West Side’s Downtown WinterFest Schedule For Valentine’s Day Saturday, February 14th Finalized West Springfield West Springfield’s First–Ever, Free WinterFest 2015 plans have been finalized for Valentine’s Day, Saturday, February 14th with a snow date of Saturday, February 21st with fun-filled, entertaining, exciting, family-friendly

events from late Saturday morning into the afternoon. All events take place in downtown central business district locations. A Peter Pan double-decker bus will provide continuous rides from 12:00 p.m.-3:00 p.m. with pick up/drop off/ pick up from the Boys & Girls Club, 615 Main Street to drop off/ pick up/drop off in the CVS parking lot at 152 Elm Street. A free ice cream cone coupon from Classic Burgers will be given to the first 250 riders. From 10:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m. Springfield Falcons mascot Screech will be at the Majestic Theater, 131 Elm Street, and West Side’s own gold medal gymnastics winner Tim Daggett will be present from 12:30 p.m.-1:30 p.m. Screech and Mr. Daggett will be available for photos and/or autographs. People need to bring their own cameras, autograph books, paper, writing utensils, hockey sticks or anything else appropriate for photos. The Church of the Good Shepherd at 214 Elm Street will have free, hot, brewed tea from Crepes Tea House from 1:00 p.m.-2:00 p.m. And from 2:00 p.m.-3:00 p.m. family-friendly puppet theater
shows with Snegurochka the Russian Snow Maiden and more winter puppets will be presented by Peppermint Patti. Additional adult, costumed, theatrical characters Jack Frost, Mother Winter, Father Winter and Disney’s “Frozen” character and others from the Multicultural Resource Center of Massachusetts will be wandering throughout the hall of the church and be available for photos. Costumed Russian children will be in attendance. Russian and Lebanese translators will attend the performances to assist Russian and Lebanese-speaking attendees. Free heart-shaped, red sugar cookie coupons from Cerratos will be distributed to the first 250 children and free Lebanese hot, flat bread coupons from the Taste of Lebanon will be given to the first 250 adults.

Springfield-based artist presents new perspective on slavery, colonialism at Westfield State WESTFIELD, Mass., February 3, 2015- Westfield State University will kick off its Black History Month events with the exhibit “Ocular Amblyopia” works by Jamaican artist Andrae Green at the Arno Maris Art Gallery in the Ely Campus Center. An artist reception will be held on Thursday,
February 5 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Jamaican-born Andrae Green began drawing at the age of three and perfected drawing the human form by studying and copying Spiderman comic books. As an undergrad at Edna Manley College of Visual and Performing Arts in Kingston,
Jamaica, Green suddenly found himself drawn to a new medium: painting. “I find that painting offers me the widest scope to express my feelings and ideas,” Green said. After earning his B.A., Green earned M.F.A. in painting at the New York Academy of Art. He relocated to the United States in 2012 and currently resides in Springfield. Green was selected for the Vermont Studio Center Residency and the
Contemporary Artist Centre (CAC) Woodside Residency in Troy, NY in 2011. His artwork has been featured in many galleries and exhibitions around the world including the 5th Beijing International Art Biennial in Beijing China, the Salon de Societe des Beaux-Arts in the Carrousel du Louvre in Paris, and the Art Gallery of Mississauga in Ontario. “Ocular Amblyopia” centers around Green’s own identity filtered through the lens of
history including slavery and colonialism. Along his way Aladdin seeks answers and advice from wise Genies, a powerful Sultan, and his own Mother to find a way to meet the Princess. However, even with the lamp in hand, Aladdin will have to learn that it takes more than a wish to make a good impression. Full of memorable characters, from lost Penguins to talking Palm Trees, this is an adventure worthy of 1001 laughs. Students from Kindergarten
to 12thgrade are encouraged to audition. Assistant Directors will also be cast to aid in rehearsals throughout the week, and to take on essential backstage responsibilities. There are 50-60 roles available, with parts in every age group. This is a group audition, and no advance preparation is necessary--though a smile always helps! There is a $55 Registration Fee due at the audition for all those who are cast—additional siblings $30 (waivers available). The Missoula Children’s Theatre touring productions are complete with costumes, scenery, props and makeup.
The MCT Tour Actor/ Directors will conduct rehearsals throughout the week from 4:00-8:30 Monday, March 2nd – Friday, March 6th. Not everyone will need to be present at every rehearsal. Orpheus in the Underworld
Local Hamilton College Student has Role in Choir Musical Clinton, N.Y. – Kerri E. Grimaldi, daughter of Richard and Nancy Grimaldi of Westfield, and a senior at Hamilton College, is appearing in the College’s choir musical Orpheus in the Underworld. The musical is being staged Friday and Saturday, Feb. 6 and 7, at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday, Feb. 8 at 2 p.m., all in Wellin Hall, Schambach Center, on the Hamilton campus. In this hilarious spoof on all the serious operas about Orpheus and Eurydice, Orpheus is delighted when Pluto takes Eurydice off to the Underworld and seeks to win her back only at the insistence of Public Opinion. Meanwhile, all the gods and goddesses on
Olympus, bored with nectar and ambrosia, revolt against Jupiter and make their way to the Underworld as well, and Jupiter's habit of turning himself into something else in order to seduce a mortal woman takes an unusual turn. Grimaldi, an English major at Hamilton, is a graduate of Westfield High School. Hamilton College is a highly selective residential college offering a rigorous liberal arts curriculum. Students are challenged to think, write and speak critically, creatively and analytically, so that upon graduation they may distinguish themselves in both their professions and their communities.
