Armbrook Village Uses Music to Bring Awareness to Alzheimer’s and Related Dementias A growing body of research connects music therapy to improved social, cognitive, and emotional health. Armbrook Village is bringing an opportunity to experience the power of music to the people of Westfield in the form of a Memory Chorus, offered the fourth Wednesday of each month at 2pm. A memory chorus is a chance for people of all ages, especially seniors and their caregivers, to experience the therapeutic benefits of singing in a no-pressure group environment.

This comes as the newest addition to the senior community’s Dementia Friendly Westfield Initiative.

Grandfamilies is the name used to describe families that are created when a relative or friend rises to care for another relative’s children.

This happens for a multitude of reasons, with the occurrence on the rise. There are even great grandparents parenting again! Along with the satisfaction of helping and the joy, there are many difficulties that also surface. To help alleviate your difficulties and added stress we offer support groups where you are welcome to come, to learn about resources, to share and be heard. Our groups are relaxed, friendly and supportive. We invite you to join us at any one or all of the groups listed below.

Volunteer Companions Sought If you want to impact an older adult’s life in a positive way, consider volunteering with the Westfield Council On Aging Companion Program.

Companions assist homebound elders in Westfield with grocery shopping, errands, transportation to medical appointments, and/ or friendly visiting. The goal of the Westfield Council On Aging Volunteer Companion Program is to help older adults maintain their independence and sense of wellbeing. It takes only two hours per week and volunteers are reimbursed for their gas mileage. There is no charge to seniors for the service which is funded by the Baystate Health Community Benefit Grant, the Westfield Community Development Block Grant, Sarah Gillett Services for the Elderly, the Massachusetts Executive Office of Elder Affairs, and private donations. Summer Time Brings Six Hours of Polka to Saturdays With Westfield State University students making their way home for the summer, WSKB Community Radio has expanded its Saturday morning polka music to six hours. Polka can now be heard on WSKB from 6 AM to 12 Noon each and every Saturday morning.

From 6 AM to 8:30 AM the national feed of the Polka Jammer Network will be simulcast, and from 8:30 AM to 12 Noon local polka celebrity and Polka Hall of Famer Billy Belina goes live from his studio in Chicopee, MA. WSKB Community Radio can be heard on the FM dial at 89.5 or can be audio streamed at wskb.org. Video feeds of WSKB can be seen on local cable channel 15 or at westfieldtv.org.

Yoga at Stanley Park Yoga Classes are coming back to Stanley Park for seven sessions this summer!

Starting on Tuesday evenings 6:00PM to 7:00PM, July 10th

through August 14th, on the Acre Lawn outside the Pavilion Annex. Please join certified instructor Jacqueline Funaro, as she leads the yoga classes. This class is for all levels of yoga practitioners, and all abilities are welcome.

The poses are foundational,

and modifications are always available. As a class we will harness the power of our breath in alignment with the movement of our bodies.

Tuesdays on the Trail runs every Tuesday from July 10 thru August 28 at 6 pm and is organized by Friends of the Columbia Greenway Rail Trail (FOCGRT). LIFE AROUND THE LAKE. This week we will go in search for the SNAKES that live near Bray Lake. Some might be in the grass and others might be swimming.

The American Red Cross Brings Smoke Free Alarms to Southwick The American Red Cross announced today that their national Home Fire Campaign is partnering with the Southwick Fire Department to install free smoke alarms in area residences on August 28, 2018. Teams consisting of a Red Cross Volunteer and a Firefighter will visit pre-registered Southwick homes to install free smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms, as well as educate the homeowner on fire safety and emergency preparedness. The campaign will kick off at the Southwick Fire Department at 9:00 am on August 28, 2018.

Southwick residents wishing to participate should meet the following criteria: 1. The home was built prior to 1975; 2. Current alarms are more than 10 years old.

as 25% over the next four years.

Fall Sports SignUps Underway Online sign-ups for fall sports at Gateway Regional High School are now open on the Gateway website. Any Gateway student entering grades 6 – 12 who wishes to play boys or girls soccer, or run with the boys or girls cross-country teams, should sign up now. Westfield State holds third annual farm-to-table fundraising dinner The Westfield State University Department of Communication will hold a farm-to-table dinner on Sunday, August 26, from 5 to 8 p.m. on the grounds of the Horace Mann Center located at 333 Western Avenue in Westfield.

Titled “Dinner at Henry’s Garden,” the event honors the late Dr. Henry Wefing, professor emeritus of communication, who served the University for 30 years.

Proceeds will benefit the Henry Wefing Journalism Scholarship, which has been awarded annually since 2016.

The menu will feature locally-sourced ingredients.

Menu options include eggplant rollatini, BLT deviled eggs, and braised beef tostadas for appetizers; grilled chicken with peaches or leg of lamb with chimichurri sauce for dinner; and cornmeal shortcakes with mixed berries and stone fruit for dessert.

Diners will be seated for dinner next to the garden Dr. Wefing planted in 2007. He used to donate the produce to the Westfield Food Pantry.

Today, the garden is maintained by volunteers, including faculty, staff and students.

Street Focus Photography Exhibit on Display at the Agawam Public Library The Agawam Library is pleased to exhibit the work of South Hadley photographer Fred LeBlanc during the month of August. Street Focus documents the “world as it happens around me – almost like I’m an invisible observer”, states the artist. This special style of photography is Fred’s way of seeing and experiencing life as it happens. Fred’s unique black and white style depicts everyday moments without interrupting them and captures a once-in-a-lifetime moment as it unfolds.

Fred has worked as a professional, commercial, corporate and editorial photographer for over thirty years. His awardwinning photos have been in museums, libraries and juried art shows. They have been published on calendars, posters, postcards and books. Fred is a member of the Springfield Photographic Society and has presented to camera clubs throughout New England. As a way of giving back to his profession, Fred teaches the Art of Digital Photography in his print studio in South Hadley, and at Greenfield Community College.
