THE MALDIVES

as a Halal Destination

The Maldives is a nation of islands in the Indian Ocean that spans across the equator. The country comprises 1192 islands that stretch along a length of 871 kilometers. While the country covers an area of approximately 90,000 square kilometers, only 298 square kilometers of that is dry land. The islands are grouped into a double chain of 26 atolls and is located in a strategic area with access to major international sea routes in the Indian Ocean.

The country’s unique geography mesmerizes the visitor. Reefs that offer bands of color, tiny jewel-like islands rimmed with the whitest of soft sand surrounded by the clearest shallow waters that one can imagine. Only

200 of the islands are inhabited, and a select few on each of the atolls are resorts and some of the islands are used for industry and agriculture. Located on the top of a vast underwater volcanic mountain range, the Maldives is among the most low-lying countries in the world with the highest natural point, usually a small hill, having an elevation of about 2.5 meters above sealevel.

The beauty of the Maldives is not only above the water. The Maldives is home to about five percent of the planet’s reefs that comes with an explosion of color contributed by soft and hard corals that form them. The reefs are home to a thousand species of fish.

Lured by the rich nutrients that flow in with the currents, large pelagic fishes such as manta rays and whale sharks also make the Maldives their home.

While coconut palm makes up the majority of the vegetation in the islands, there is a distinct difference in the types of plants found in the inhabited and uninhabited islands. Inhabited islands usually have small groves of banana, papaya, drumstick, citrus, breadfruit trees and coconut palms. In the uninhabited islands, you are more likely to find various types of bushes and mangroves along the beach as well as the ever present coconut trees.

Marshy areas and even small to mediumsized lakes can be found on some islands. The temperature of the Maldives ranges between 24 and 33°c throughout the year. The country experiences 2 seasons: dry monsoon (Iruvai) and rainy monsoon (Hulhangu). However, due to global warming, the monsoons have become less predictable each year. Suffice to say that the weather now is warm and sunny most of the year, with only the occasional rainy days regardless of which monsoon it is.

Maldives is a 100% Muslim country; meaning Islam is the only practised religion in the country. The island destination offers muslim-friendly facilities, halal food and the like - making it the ideal destination for Muslim travelers to visit. The ‘one island’ resort concept offers privacy for guestsmany resorts offering private villas with pools - where Muslim travelers can unwind and rejuvenate without worry. As it is a Muslim country, halal food is available in all islands; even in resorts. Guests can request any special dietary needs to ensure that the meal that they receive is 100% halal.

MALDIVES

& Tourism Industry

HISTORY

Historically speaking, the Maldives was colonized by travelers from the Indian subcontinent. The earliest written history of the Maldives was marked by the arrival of Sinhalese people in Maldives around 543 to 483 BC.

The country experienced a colonial period back in 1558 when the Portugeuse established a garrison with Viador (Viyazouaru) - or roughly translated as an overseer of a factory (trading post). Somewhere in the mid-17th century the Dutch made a move to the Maldives without directly inflicting themselves in internal affairs. They were dispersed off by the British back in 1796 which resulted in Maldives becoming a part of the British protected areas.

The Maldives ancestral pedigree is rooted from Buddhism carried across the Indian subcontinent and made its way in Maldives along with its first settlers. However, the Maldives was converted to Islam in the year of 1153 AD by a Muslim trader from Maghrib (Morocco) by the name of Abul Barakat Yoosuf Al Barbary.

Since then, the religion has played a key role in shaping the Maldivian society. Some of the famous landmarks in the country have been greatly influenced by Islamic architecture.

Following the transition from Buddhism to Islam, the Buddhist King Dhovemi after converting to Islam adopted the title of Sultan Mohammaed al Adil and was responsible for initiating a series of six Islamic dynasties, which lasted until 1932 when the sultanate became elective. One interesting fact regarding the early sultans og the Maldives was their adopted title or the Sutan’s former title, which was Sultan of Land and Sea, Lord of the Twelve-Thousand Islands and Sultan of the Maldives, and carried credibility until 1965.

CULTURE

Despite the island being scattered all throughout 90,000 square kilometeres, Maldivians share a similar cultural heritage, history, ancestry, homeland, language and religion. These common factors are the reason for the unity and harmony prevailing in the alluring islands.

Traditionally whenever guests visit a local island, the islanders will welcome them by serving a fresh coconut drink. This tradition has continued to this day, so don’t be surprised if the resort of your choice offers a beautifully decorated coconut drink when you reach your destination.

The customs and social behavior of the Maldivian have been greatly influenced by the Indians, Sri Lankan, Arabs and North Africans who have visited the Maldives while traversing throughout the trading routes of the central Indian Ocean. The Maldives culture is rich and vibrant due to the infusion of various other cultural elements.

CRAFTSMANSHIP

Maldives is also renowned for having expert craftsmen, who practice and promote unique and purely Maldivian original lacquer work as wel as souvenir crafting. The intricate stone carvings found in the Friday Mosque in the Male’ City is a living example of Maldivian craftsmanship.

The lacquer crafting is normally practiced on wood, being spun at excessive speed on a hand-made motor - like equipment. Sharp edged knives are used to precisely ink in and carve out designs and patterns on them.

TOURISM IN MALDIVES

A country that had boomed into progress through fishing and agriculture back in the yesteryear period witnessed a paradigm shift and a drastic increase in its journey towards modernism when Maldives was introduced in the field of tourism.

Tourism in Maldives was established back in 1972, and Kurumba Maldives was etched into the pages of history when it became the first resort to be opened in the nation. An initiative led by then President, Mr.

Ibrahim Nasir. The second resort to be opened in Maldives was Bandos, and both resorts have since then gone to become landmarks or pinnacles of Maldivian tourism industry and are still in operation.

When the industry started, the country had just two resorts with a capacity of roughly 280 beds. However, today roughly 160+ resorts are operating in Maldives while dozens more are in development phases. Apart from the lineage of resorts, Maldives also caters to the tourism industry in the form of guestbouses which sprung up first back in 2009, through a smart move in the regulations that finally allowed tourists to stay among local populations.

Liveaboards, also known in the Maldives as ‘safari boats’, are another attraction for tourists to Maldives. These vessels, which cruise around the atolls on scheduled itineraries; usually lasting a week or sometimes two, are the best for die-hard scuba divers who want to do at least three dives per day as well as see as much of the Maldives as possible. The variety of experiences available includes diving with large pelagies, drift diving, wreck diving, channel diving, and exploring thilas, caves and remote reefs. The vessels move to new spots every day and the route usually encompasses more than one atoll.

Getting around

THE MALDIVES

If this is your first time in Maldives, your point of entry will most likely be the Velana International Airport (VIA) in the island of Hulhule. Depending on the travel plans you have made, you’re going to have to catch a boat or seaplane ride to get to your actual destination. As a country of more than 1192 islands divided into 26 atolls stretched over roughly 90,000 square kilometers (34,749 sq mi), the only possible modes of transportation are by sea or air transfer; ready when you arrive at the airport.

A speedboat transfer to the resort or hotel is the ideal choice if it is near to the airport. If your resort is located in one of the most distant atolls, you will most likely get the opportunity to enjoy the beauty of Maldives from a bird’s viewpoint as you fly to your destination in one of the sea planes.

Velana International Airport is one of the four international airports in the Maldives. Then there are 13 domestic airports that offer top-notch connectivity within the atolls. However, it should be noted that the Velana International Airport and Male’ is the central hub of all travel within the country.

Male’ city is 10 minutes away from Velana International Airport by Taxi. In Male’, there are plenty of taxis available to whisk you and your luggage away to wherever you want. Travelling to a tourist resort, hotel or safari cruise is also available from Male’ and the airport. If your choice of holiday destination happens to be a tourist resort, hotel or safari cruise; an airport representative or resort staff will pick you up on arrival and guide you through the process of getting to your sea or air transfer.

Getting of your

THE MOST STAY

A holiday in Maldives would be incomplete without enjoying at least a few of the fantastic excursions available from resorts and guesthouses.

With so many places to see and so much to do, you will be hard-pressed to enjoy everything. So here is a small guide to help you decide what activities you can fit into your holiday.

DIVING WITH THE MAJESTIC MANTAS

The underwater realms in the Maldives are home to a myriad of mysteries and wonders. Amongst one of these wonders is the majestic manta ray. With their majestic wingspans and graceful demeanour, encountering a manta ray during your dive in the Maldives is a moment that etches into one’s memory for a lifetime.

Despite their immense size, these elegant rays exhibit a gentle and curious nature, often approaching divers with a sense of wonder, creating a unique bond between species. In such cases, it is best to let the manta guide the interaction instead of the other way around. These majestic beings find their home in the warm embrace of tropical and subtropical oceans across the globe. No wonder that the mantas feel so at home in the Maldives.

Specific locales, such as the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Hanifaru Bay in Baa Atoll, Seenu Atoll, Ari Atoll, and Lhaviyani Atoll have gained fame as prime manta ray hotspots. However, certain marine protected areas such as Hanifaru Bay restrict diving. Make sure you research your spot before you go.

SHIPWRECKS AND SUNKEN TREASURES

Wreck diving, for many, is the ultimate experience. That being said, Maldives is an ideal destination for diving among caves, tunnels and shipwrecks. Some of the most spectacular shipwrecks lie on the ocean floor of this tropical diving paradise. Divers can get to witness how marine ecosystems adapt to take over these sunken relics, and explore the sunken treasures beneath the deep blue sea.

Some of the noteworthy shipwreck diving spots are as below:

North Malé Atoll has fascinating shipwrecks. The Victory wreck is a cargo ship that lies on the southwestern side of Hulhulé. The house reef at Angsana Ihuru has its own wreck too. It is called the Rannamaari, an obsolete sand-dredging ship that was deliberately submerged to facilitate wreck diving.

Keyodhoo in Vaavu Atoll has a wreck that is thought to be an Indonesian vessel that drifted empty into the atoll a few years ago. This is one of the most popular and most “Instagram worthy” sports to visit.

Kudhimaa Wreck is a medium sized steel wreck lying close to the Machafushi house reef. The wreck was purposely sunk to provide divers visiting the South Ari Atoll with a wreck. On and around it, you can find schools of bat fish, some puffer fish and the customary large lionfish. It is bursting with subjects for photographers.

The Shipyard is one of the biggest dive attractions in Lhaviyani Atoll. There are two wrecks in this location which are 40 years old. While one of them sits upright, the other is on its side at about 30 meters below the water. They are home to a variety of fish and also a hangout for large pelagics, nurse sharks and grey reef sharks. This is another must-visit spot to add to your list.

19

SURFING SNORKELLING

The Maldives is located right in the middle of the Indian Ocean and benefits from full exposure to southern swells and to excellent surfing conditions on the outer reefs of atolls. With an average water temperature of around 28-degree Celsius, surfing conditions are good throughout the surfing season from mid-February to November, however you can experience the best conditions from March to May and September to the end of November.

The consistent waves at various surf points in the North Male’ Atoll offer some of the longest rides in the country. Some famous surf locations in the atoll include Cokes at Thulusdhoo, Lhohis, at Lhohifushi island, Jailbreaks, Honky’s, Male’ Island Point, Sultans and Ninjas, all along the eastern rim of the atoll.

For many surfers, Huvadhoo Atoll, in the southern group of the atoll chain offers the coolest waves in the Maldives, most of them located on the southern rim of the atoll. Beacons, Tiger Stripes, Castaways, Blue Bowls, Airports, Five Islands, Two Ways, Love Charms and Antiques are some of the well-known surf points in the atoll.

With hundreds of islands and atolls lying in the Indian Ocean, the Maldives offers visitors an underwater adventure like no other. In this island-hopping paradise, you can freely explore unspoiled lagoons surrounded by colorful coral reefs, where marine life thrives. Snorkeling around the atolls allows marine life enthusiasts to observe hundreds of reef fish species (including angelfish, morays, anemonefish, snappers and tangs) as well as sharks, turtles, eagle rays and mantas in stunning underwater scenery.

However, not everyone can dive due to the extensive training and certification required. That’s why snorkelling is the better option for travellers looking to explore the sights and creatures underwater.

The Malé Atoll offers the largest choice of resort islands in the Maldives. All the resort islands have snorkeling, but some of them stand out for the quality of their seabed and underwater life. Baros, Vabbinfaru, Helengeli and Angsana, all four located in North Malé Atoll, are considered the best for snorkeling because of their stunning house reefs. In South Malé Atoll, Biyadhoo and Embudu, where spotted eagle rays abound, are also considered great options.

If you want to fully enjoy the magical Maldives underwater world, then head to Maafushivaru, Bathala, Velidhu, Kandolhu, or Mirihi in Ari Atoll. These are considered to be some of the best snorkeling places in the Maldives because of their crystal-clear water teeming with life.

Vilamendhoo, at the southeastern edge of Ari Atoll, is another must-visit spot for Maldive snorkeling enthusiasts. Shallow reef flats, visited by sea turtles and blacktip sharks, await you there.

SUNSET & DOLPHIN CRUISE

Take the chance to enjoy the stunning Maldivian sunset on the high seas with dolphins to guide your way. Don’t forget to take your camera as there’s always a chance to bump into some friendly dolphins who are more than willing to put on a show for you.

SCENIC SEAPLANE TOURS

Experience the breathtaking beauty of the Maldives from a seaplane, with its scattered isles, lush coral islands, and vibrant reefs. The seaplane companies operating in the Maldives offer spectacular flights over the atolls; perfect for photo trips or sight-seeing.

The most enticing way to discover the Maldives is by a cruise safari. On a cruise safari you can choose to dive, snorkel or laze and gaze at the islands passing by. For the adrenalin cravers ride the waves of the surf breaks, and for the inquisitive participate in learning a local craft by visiting an inhabited island. Few simple pleasures to share with family and friends near and far.

21
LIVEABOARD

When it comes to food, the Maldives can take you on a gastronomical adventure of epic proportions. Our cuisine is as diverse as our culture and traditions.

The essential ingredients in our food preparation used to be coconut, fish, and starches. However, since the arrival of ancient traders, the scene changed dramatically.

The Maldivian cuisine today is a blend of distinctive flavors. The food traditions reflect religious and traditional backgrounds as well. There are certain ceremonies during which one or two particular Maldivian food dishes is the showstopper. Then there are ceremonies where a carnival of food comes together to give your taste buds a ride of a lifetime.

One such traditional food experience unique to Maldives is called a “Keyn”. This is one traditional/ cultural food experience which gives you the perfect opportunity to taste a little bit of everything that our cuisine offers. A Keyn is food served in a large circular KEYN - A CULINARY EXPERIENCE YOU CAN’T MISS!

traditional tray with a lid inside in which there is enough food to feed a group of around 12 people.

The food items in the Keyn consists of rice, curries, side dishes, salads, grilled meat, coconut cream, banana, rice and breadfruit puddings and delights. It is, quite literally, several courses of meals served in a mini buffet tray.

The ‘Keyn’ preparation originates from a religious ceremony called Maaloodhu, where reciters give out prayers or benedictions. In the early days Maaloodhu ceremony was held after naming a newborn, to celebrate certain religious festivals, to bless houses and its people.

Keyn trays are now prepared for Eid ceremonies, social gathering or political events, where they are presented to special guests in the islands. Some resorts, hotels and even some guesthouses do prepare and arrange Keyn meals for guests. Either way, the Keyn experience is quite the culinary pleasure.

Imagine yourself cruising through an underwater garden filled with tropical fish. This is exactly what you will experience during your 45-minute dive. Onboard the whale submarine you will descend to a submerged reef 45 meters beneath the surface. Whale Submarine is also the world’s largest and deepest diving passenger submarine. One of the best ways to discover the underwater and marine life of the Maldives. Through large acrylic view-ports in front of each seat, you can see the depths of the ocean and a school of surgeon fish greeting the submarine. On reaching a depth of 100 feet you will see a coral reef with different types of marine life and corals.

Occasionally White Tip Reef Sharks and Napoleons are sighted here. If you are lucky you may be able to see one of the biggest Groupers in the Maldives here in this location. This 2 meter long Giant Grouper frequents this area and is totally devoid of fear for the submarine.

Depending on time of the day, current and many other factors the submarine may dive on some historical sites such as a shipwreck or a more exciting place like a shark feeding area or just another beautiful reef. Before the dive begins the crew inside the submarine would give you a briefing on that particular dive site.

WATERSPORTS

The Maldives is 99% water and just one percent land. And as one might expect, the thrills of the Maldives lie on, under or over the surface of the water. Wherever you choose to holiday in the Maldives, there are watersports on offer. But be mindful that some resorts prefer to offer their guests complete tranquility without the sound of motorized engines that propel many a ride on the water. But even those resorts would offer relaxing canoe rides, windsurfing, snorkeling and diving.

If you are serious about the thrill, choose one of the resorts or a guesthouse on an island that offers them all. Bouncy banana rides with friends and family, a solo ride trimming the waves on a jet ski or skimming the lagoon at high speeds on a wakeboard, all of which would offer you that adrenaline rush that you seek to feel rejuvenated and at one with the elements. For the serious water sports enthusiast there is kite surfing, parasailing or just navigating solo around the reefs on a catamaran.

The ‘island hopping’ excursion offers the opportunity to enjoy several activities in one. Under this, you will be able to do a day visit to another resort, snorkell in the clear waters and relax at the end of the trip enjoying

a beach BBQ under the stars at an uninhabited island, and also the opportunity to visit a local inhabited island to experience local island life - all within a day!

MALÉ TOUR

Available as a full-day or half-day trip, the Malé Tour allows tourists to experience the hustle and bustle of the world’s most densely populated capital city. At the Male’ Jetty, you will be handed over to an external local tour guide who will guide you through the history, politics and culture of this unique country.

In Malé, there are several places woth seeing and visiting; such as the National Museum, the Kalhu Vakaru Miskiy (the Travelling Mosque), Hukuru Misky (the Friday Mosque), Sultan Park and the local fish market. You can finish off the tour by visiting some of the several souvenir shops in the area.

EXPLORING THE MALDIVES

Embrace

Authenticity on Local Islands

UNLOCK A CULTURAL ADVENTURE

Embarking on a cultural journey in the Maldives by staying on a local island provides an unmatched opportunity to immerse yourself in the community. Unlike the role of a mere spectator, you can forge genuine connections with locals. Delight in hedhikaa, savory bites often paired with black tea and betel nuts, savor shared meals at family tables, and sway to the rhythmic beats of the bodu beru. Knowledgeable local guides will breathe life into these encounters by offering insights and introductions. This profound cultural exchange is something that lavish resorts simply can’t replicate.

While resort islands may offer brief day trips to local destinations, these fleeting visits barely scratch the surface compared to the depth of experience gained from spending a few nights or more. The authentic sounds of the early morning call to prayer, the animated calls of fishermen hauling in their catch, and the aromatic wafts during dusk as kitchen doors open and barbecues ignite—these are the genuine local island encounters that can’t be captured on a hurried tour.

BENEFITS FOR YOUR WALLET AND THE COMMUNITY

The Maldives might not be synonymous with budget travel, but staying on a local island proves to be a more wallet-friendly alternative to a resort getaway. Islands such as Guraidhoo, Hulhumale, and Maafushi offer a selection of guest house, restaurants and neighborhood cafes where you can relish the island’s culinary offerings without depleting your funds.

Opting for local island tourism also yields financial gains that extend to both visitors and the local populace. This approach has enabled a distribution of economic benefits and job prospects to corners of the Maldives that were once overlooked. The desire for employment in the tourism sector can coexist with family life, as islanders have the opportunity to support their families while remaining at home. A greater number of island dwellers have been able

to reunite with their families after working on remote resort islands. This equilibrium between work and home life is vital for nurturing contented, flourishing, and sustainable livelihoods that enrich everyone.

The expansion of tourism has also bolstered certain social facets of Maldivian existence. Local cafes and restaurants aren’t just for tourists—they’ve become additional communal spaces where islanders gather and connect.

Moreover, numerous diving and watersports centers provide discounted rates for island residents, enthusiastically encouraging individuals of all ages to engage. This even includes opportunities to advance through PADI courses up to the level of Dive Master.

Muslim Friendly Travel Rating (MFTR) is a voluntary rating that examines and evaluates tourism properties in the Maldives, specifically the resorts, safaris, airports, guesthouses and city hotels based on their level of Muslim friendliness. It is an annual rating ensuring the services and amenities are in compliance to Muslim etiquettes.

MFTR acts as a stand-alone accreditation business focused on producing trusted and reliable Muslim friendly rating results for domestic and international visitors. The 5-star symbol added to an institution is an award granted after a thorough quality assessment is completed and approved by the MFTR. The process helps a traveler know what to expect beforehand from an institution.

Tourism establishments are graded ‘voluntarily’ from 1 Star up to 5 Stars with 1 Star being very basic in the Muslim friendliness services it offers and 5 Stars meeting the highest requirements.

When our Assesors perform a grading, they are mindful of the type of accommodation being graded. It is therefore possible for even a smaller tourism establishment - for instance, a guesthouse propertyto achieve a 5-Star category award proving that they meet the requirement.

In short, MFTR is an independent rating system that is grounded on an institution’s overall Muslim friendliness. According to research and experts, the rating enables and encourages more Muslim-friendly travelers to visit a country or a property, while also enabling the rating to be used as a marketing technique.

A Journey through History, Nature, and Culture

Located in the northernmost atoll of the Maldives, Haa Alif Baarah is a distinctive island, shaped like the Arabic letter “baa”. It holds historical significance as the birthplace of the famous vessel “Kalhuohfummi”, constructed amidst the mangrove areas in the latter half of the 16th century. This legendary ship, utilized by Sultan Muhammad Thakurufaanu and his fighters, played a pivotal role in defending the Maldives against Portuguese invasion.

To reach Baarah, travelers must embark on a domestic flight lasting approximately 55 minutes to Hanimaadhoo International Airport via Maldivian Airlines. From there, a 30 minute transfer by Maldivian public transport RTL, a speed boat will take visitors to Baarah.

Nature walks are another enchanting way to explore Baarah. Stroll along wooden boardwalks or trails winding through the mangrove forest, immersing oneself in nature while learning about the unique plant and animal species that inhabit the area. Tour guides

Fishing excursions offer an opportunity to experience traditional Maldivian fishing techniques, fostering a connection with the local community. Or, engage in traditional crafts like thatch roof weaving and coir rope weaving, still widely practiced by locals.

Baarah also features historical sites such as the tomb of Kanba Aissa, King Ali’s widow, and the ancient Friday Mosque, boasting intricate lacquer work on its beams.

Additionally, Baarah’s harbor stands out for its distinctive formation within a lagoon, providing a safe haven for boats during rough seas. However, concerns have been raised about the jetty’s suitability for cargo loading and unloading, despite facilitating passenger transportation throughout the seasons.

MALDIVES ISLAMIC BANK

Revolutionalizing Islamic Banking in the Maldives

Maldives Islamic Bank, established in partnership between the Maldivian government and the ISDB in 2012, marks its 13th anniversary this year. Pioneering the provision of banking services aligned with Islamic principles in the nation, Maldives Islamic Bank introduced a range of services, including bank account opening and associated financial offerings. These offerings quickly gained the trust of Maldivian citizens, leading to significant expansion within a relatively short period.

Over the past 13 years, Maldives Islamic Bank has

significantly transformed the financial landscape of the Maldives. In a country where Islamic business and transaction principles hold paramount importance, the provision of banking services in accordance with these principles has been instrumental. The bank has introduced various elements of the Islamic financial system to the Maldives, contributing to its widespread recognition as the premier banking institution in the nation.

During its introduction in the Maldives, the advent of Islamic banking faced significant challenges.

47

The concept was novel, and there was a scarcity of individuals possessing technical expertise in this domain. Moreover, the general populace exhibited limited familiarity with the principles governing Islamic finance and business. In response to these challenges, Maldives Islamic Bank undertook concerted efforts to address each issue comprehensively. Special initiatives were launched to enhance public awareness and cultivate professionals proficient in Islamic finance.

Notably, the bank extended substantial support to the Islamic University of Maldives, offering scholarship opportunities to aspiring students. Furthermore, to instill foundational knowledge from an early age, the bank organized various forums on Islamic finance across different regions of the Maldives, catering specifically to school children. These endeavors underscored the bank’s commitment to fostering understanding and expertise in Islamic financial practices within the Maldivian community.

Upon its inception in the Maldives, the primary objective of Islamic Bank was to establish itself as a trusted and reliable financial institution among the populace. In pursuit of this goal, the bank prioritized the adoption of cutting-edge technology and the provision of convenient services to its customers. Notably, Islamic Bank introduced several innovative initiatives to enhance convenience and accessibility for Maldivian customers. Among these, the introduction of the first wireless POS machine and POS cash deposit services marked significant milestones. Additionally, the bank unveiled its proprietary ‘Faisa card’ as a means of facilitating transactions, alongside the establishment of its own network of ATMs.

Furthermore, Islamic Bank took strides to extend its services internationally, offering card services to Maldivians through its own infrastructure, without reliance on foreign banks’ systems. These initiatives underscored the bank’s commitment to leveraging technology and self-sufficiency to ensure seamless banking experiences for its customers while reinforcing trust and confidence in its operations.

Consequently, the bank swiftly closed the gap with its competitors through technological advancements. Presently, it surpasses all other banks in the Maldives by enabling individuals to open bank accounts remotely, without the necessity of visiting a physical branch. This secure and convenient online service mirrors offerings available in the most technologically advanced nations worldwide.

MIB’s products have garnered international acclaim and enjoy global recognition, prompting other banks to emulate its services. Undoubtedly, Islamic Bank stands out as one of the most favored banks among the populace today, owing to its strong rapport with customers and transformative advancements in banking services. The bank’s accessibility, coupled with its commitment to quality, has contributed significantly to its widespread popularity. Moreover, its emphasis on security and customer confidence, exemplified by features such as two-factor authentication and biometric unlocking in internet banking, has been enthusiastically embraced by MIB customers.

The people of the Maldives have played an instrumental role in the progress and achievements of Islamic Bank over the past 13 years. Their unwavering trust, warm welcome, and wholehearted acceptance of the bank’s services have been pivotal.

Thus, today, the bank extends heartfelt gratitude to the people of the Maldives. With deep appreciation and a firm resolve to continue serving the community with excellence, Islamic Bank looks forward to achieving even greater success in the future.

I found my passion for makeup at the age of 17 and started off as a freelance artist. I’ve dedicated the past 11 years to refining my craft as a makeup artist in Male’ City.

HOW DID YOU INITIALLY GET INTO MAKEUP? WHAT HAS YOUR JOURNEY BEEN LIKE?

I’ve adored makeup for as long as I can remember. Even in my childhood, my passion for makeup was evident, as I would experiment with different trends on my sisters, finding immense joy in the process. Upon completing my O’ levels, I was certain of my path and promptly joined a salon, marking the beginning of my journey. Despite the limited opportunities in the industry at the time, with unwavering support from my family and friends, I launched “Makeup by Midhu” at a young age. Reflecting on my 11-year journey, I am immensely proud of what I have accomplished

WHAT WAS YOUR UNDERSTANDING OF BEAUTY WHEN YOU WERE A LITTLE GIRL AND HOW DO YOU DEFINE IT NOW AS A YOUNG

HOW DO YOU MAINTAIN YOUR CREATIVE EDGE AND STAY INSPIRED?

Remaining up-to-date with the latest trends in makeup has been a constant source of excitement for me. My passion for makeup itself, continuously drives and inspires me. More than just a profession, makeup is one of my greatest loves—it’s my hobby and my true passion.

WHEN IT COMES TO THE REPRESENTATION OF MUSLIM WOMEN IN BEAUTY, WHAT CHANGE DO YOU WISH TO SEE IN THE INDUSTRY?

I wish to see more modest fashion represented in the industry. It’s unfortunate that hijabi models often face unequal opportunities compared to non-hijabi models. It’s essential for the industry to embrace diversity and provide equal opportunities for all, regardless of religious or cultural backgrounds.

TRAVELING TO THE MALDIVES

Checklist to Make the Most of Your Vacation

Are you planning a dream vacation to the Maldives? With its stunning beaches, crystal-clear waters, and luxurious resorts, it’s no wonder why this tropical paradise is a top destination for travelers worldwide. However, before you embark on your journey, it’s essential to consider some health tips to ensure a safe and enjoyable trip. Here is some valuable advice to make the most of your vacation.

JET LAG RUINING YOUR VACATION? NOT ANYMORE.

Worried about jet lag ruining your vacation? Worry no more. Many tourists flying across more than five time zones often experience jet lag. The good news is that there are ways to tackle it. It’s essential to know that recovering from jet lag might take longer after flying from west to east compared to the other way around. If you’re an adult and have faced severe jet lag on previous trips, melatonin might be your savior. However, it’s essential to keep in mind that if you decide to take melatonin, avoid consuming alcohol with it for optimal results. Also, don’t forget to consider having small and frequent meals and using caffeine strategically to manage jet lag better.

TRAVELLING WHILE PREGNANT

Maldives is a rising destination for babymoon celebrations. Air travel doesn’t have any known negative effects on pregnant women or their babies. However, it’s crucial to be cautious, especially if you’ve had complicated pregnancies in the past, such as premature delivery, late-term miscarriage, high blood pressure, or eclampsia. In such cases, extensive travel during your current pregnancy is best avoided. Instead, consider opting for transfer via seaplane or domestic flights instead of speed boats for added comfort and safety. To ensure a smooth journey, make sure you get enough rest, sleep well, and take your antenatal medications on time. Your host at the destination will be more than happy to assist you and accommodate your commute as per your specific needs. You can even treat yourself to a relaxing spa session for a much-needed indulgence during your babymoon. If in doubt, don’t hesitate to consult your OB for guidance and reassurance.

KEEPING THE PARTY LEGS PUMPING TO BEAT DVT

Maldives is a popular destination for tourists from all over the world. Some, unfortunately, must travel long distances prior to reaching paradise. Be on the lookout for Deep vein Thrombosis (DVT) / lower limb swelling during your journey. This condition is not uncommon in travelers who fly longer than six to eight hours. To avoid DVT, stretching, standing up and walking around every hour or two is very important. Don’t forget to flex and extend your ankles and knees as often as you can. If you have a history of DVT in the past, the likelihood of it occurring again increases so do wear a knee-high compression stocking. It’s advisable to avoid crossing your legs for prolonged periods.

99

ZAPPING AWAY MOSQUITO AND INSECT BITES.

The Maldives is a tropical paradise, but with such beauty comes some challenges, such as Dengue Fever being endemic. No need to fret, though; all resorts and most islands in the Maldives take preventive measures by regularly spraying pesticides to ensure your protection. However, it’s wise to take extra precautions by wearing mosquito repellent, especially if you plan to be outdoors during dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active. Look for the best mosquito repellents containing DEET, permethrin, or picaridin as active ingredients for effective defense against those pesky insects..

PHYSICAL INJURIES, CUTS AND SCRAPES

If you’re an adventure seeker and plan to engage in physically demanding activities like diving and surfing, make sure to pack all the proper clothing and safety gear. Keep yourself hydrated while having fun! While most resorts and islands have clinics or health centers on their properties, access to tertiary health care centers may take some time, especially on remote islands. In the case of minor abrasions or small lacerations, simply wash them thoroughly with clean water and apply an antiseptic solution for quick relief. However, should you notice any fever or experience swelling and redness around the injury, it’s best to seek advice from the resort doctor on-site for immediate care and attention.

SPF

IS MY BFF

SPF, your true BFF when it comes to sun care! No matter whether you’re indoors, enjoying a cloudy day, or basking on the beautiful beaches, never forget to apply sunscreen. To ensure maximum protection, choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher that shields you from both UVA and UVB rays. Remember to reapply it every two hours, as its effectiveness tends to decrease over time. When applying, use at least two fingerful blots of sunscreen for your face and neck alone, and then, liberally spread it across your chest, back, and limbs. To add some style to your sun protection, don’t forget to rock wide-brim hats and trendy sunglasses with UV protection!

AFTER TRAVEL TIPS:

After an exciting and adventurous trip, you may experience delayed symptoms, so it’s essential to be mindful of your health even after returning home. If you encounter any health issues, particularly if you have a fever, it’s crucial to consult your doctor and inform them about your marvelous journey to the Maldives. Now that you’re equipped with these essential travel tips, you’re all set to have an incredible and memorable vacation in the Maldives! Happy traveling!

HUSSAN

HEAD OF VISUALS FOR THE TRAVEL GUYS

We sat down with Hussan, a filmmaker, a photographer and a creative director currently working as the Head of Visuals for The Travel Guys to learn more about his journey as a digital creator in the Maldives.

HOW DID YOU INITIALLY GET INTO PHOTOGRAPHY?

To be honest, I can’t remember a time where I wasn’t taking photos. I was blessed as a child to have been raised around cameras. My parents loved capturing on film and filling our shelves with photo albums. It has always been a hobby for as long as I could remember.

However, it wasn’t until recently, by the end of 2021 that I picked up a fully manual camera for the first time. That, you could say, was the beginning of my professional career as a photographer.

HOW DO YOU MAINTAIN YOUR CREATIVE EDGE AND STAY INSPIRED?

Just like any other profession, it’s important to evaluate where your strengths lie to keep yourself inspired and get the maximum out of your creativity. For me, this inspiration is carried by satisfying my inner self critic. It’s often easy to get lost by an artist’s block when you’re working to meet a client’s demands but as long as you stick to your roots and reminisce about what you’re creating and why, it helps you ground yourself as an artist. Spare up some time and create for yourself. Not for anyone else. That makes the difference for me.

Maldives Halal Travel 2024

FROM YOUR TRAVELS AND EXPERIENCES, WHICH PICTURES THAT YOU HAVE TAKEN ARE YOUR FAVOURITES OR INSPIRATIONAL FROM A PERSONAL POINT OF VIEW?

I’ve been to V. Fulidhoo a couple of times and never has it once ceased to intrigue me. It’s a transitional place where old traditions are still seeping through the waves of modernization. I’d say my favorite photos are from strolling in Fulidhoo, mostly during the early hours of morning when the colors are vibrant, the shadows are soft and the locals are going about their daily routine.

I’m an avid street photographer and I find it to be a unique way of getting to know a place and its people as you interact with them when you’re capturing the hustle and bustle of their day to day lives.

YOU’VE VISITED A NUMBER OF ISLANDS IN MALDIVES INCLUDING RESORTS TO PROVIDE PHOTOGRAPHY SERVICES. WHICH PLACE STOOD OUT THE MOST AND WHY?

Patina Maldives, for sure. The architecture, the interiors, the resort concept and all its artistic elements make me sort of want to say it’s my kind of place. I got the privilege of visiting Patina during their Ocean Cosmopolitan event in 2023 and to me it portrayed a haven for artists.

TO CONCLUDE, WHAT WOULD YOU RECOMMEND OF MALDIVES TO MUSLIM TRAVELERS AND WHAT CAN THEY EXPECT?INCLUDING RESORTS TO PROVIDE PHOTOGRAPHY SERVICES. WHICH PLACE STOOD OUT THE MOST AND WHY?

There’s definitely more to the Maldives than just white sandy beaches and crystal clear waters. Its Islamic heritage has rarely been documented which makes the Maldives an interesting place for a cultural traveler, specifically a fellow Muslim nomad to come and explore on their own.

The local creative talent here is massive and is quite friendly for you to contact them and help you out before you make your way. We’d aim to help you capture the kind of content that makes your Maldives trip unique from the ones you see in mainstream media.

Whether you’re a luxurious traveler staying at a high class resort or a budget traveler looking for a more adventurous journey, Maldives would be ideal for any Muslim to visit. Conveniently, our local customs are also based around the Islamic faith and its values.

GCC Traveler Trends to the Maldives in 2023 and Forecasts for 2024

PULSE HOTELS & RESORTS

Leading and progressive Maldivian hospitality development business Pulse Hotels & properties has seen a new trend among GCC travelers in 2023: they are choosing to stay longer at their Maldives properties, Kandima Maldives, Nova Maldives, and The Nautilus Maldives. According to the tenets of “slow travel,” this movement enables visitors to take longer trips and develop a close bond with their location. In 2024, growth is expected to continue.

The GCC has seen a notable upsurge in the popularity of solo travel, with the Pulse Hotels & Resorts team

observing a notable increase in demand in 2023. According to industry analysts, in 2024, solo travelers will continue to drive this trend, looking for more immersive and genuine travel experiences.

Pulse Hotels & Resorts debuted Nova Maldives in 2022 with a modern take on all-inclusive with a dynamic “community” concept, aimed to Millennials and lone travelers, with the goal of aligning its most recent resort projects with global travel trends. In the meanwhile, the ultra-luxurious private island resort offers unscripted cuisine and experiences where “time stands still.” The Nautilus and the wide variety of activities available at the mega-resort Kandima make for leisurely paces.

“One of the best things about slow travel is that it allows a guest to have time for all sorts of experiences, that make them feel like they are a part of a destination,” said Althaf Mohamed Ali, COO of Pulse Hotels & Resorts. We make sure that guests are introduced to Holhuashi, a local custom, and get a taste of the local culture, customs, and cuisine when they arrive at Nova, the newest resort in the Maldives, as an example of how we are adjusting to this trend. Our goal is to provide comprehensive, stimulating experiences that go above and beyond what is typically offered to tourists at all of our resorts.

“Solo travelers may have a variety of objectives, such as the desire for speed, excitement, rest, renewal, or the stunning maritime scenery. In order to meet the needs of our visitors, our resorts’ offers correspond with each of these activities. This includes the chance for some “me” time at The Nautilus, the most bespoke private island experience in the Maldives, where guests can create a world of their own making with free-spirited experiences tailored to their every whim and enjoy fine dining anytime, anywhere. Other activities include group exercise or community dining at Nova to foster connections between solo travelers.

Travelers from the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) are increasingly choosing the Maldives as their destination of choice when they want to unwind and connect with nature on a deeper level. The Nautilus’ wellness offerings, like it’s underwater meditation and moonlight breathwork sessions, are particularly wellliked by these travelers. In the pure backdrop of the stunning Maldives, these experiences provide people a chance to re-establish a connection with both nature and oneself.

As they continue to be one of the top source markets for the destination at an easy four-hour flight time, GCC travelers are leading the way in embracing a more thoughtful and sustainable approach to exploring the Maldives. “This shift towards slow and solo travel experiences represents a significant evolution in travel preferences,” Althaf Mohamed Ali continued.
