The Maldives

The Maldives is home to more than a thousand coral islands with white sandy beaches encircled by azure waters. Dubbed as paradise on earth, some of the most vibrant underwater gardens and pristine beaches are found in the island archipelago. Apart from the natural beauty, the country is famous for its luxury island resorts and hospitality. In addition to the stunning island resorts, the renowned Maldivian hospitality can be seen in the local islands. The locals are known for their inviting and amicable nature.

Comprising of 1,192 islands in collections of 26 atolls, more than 170 islands are operational resorts, and less than 200 islands are inhabited by the local people. The Maldives has a population of over 500,000 people. The local time is GMT +5 and the local currency is Maldivian Rufiyaa (MVR). With an official conversion rate of 15.42, US Dollar is also widely accepted around the country, especially at tourist attractions and resorts.

Flavours and Cuisines Beyond the Shorelines

The Maldives archipelago has a rich history and a distinctive culture and heritage, offering experiences like no other. An array of unique flavours and exquisite cuisines are prepared from the north to the south of the country. While similar in many ways, every island in each atoll interestingly distinguishes from another. From the earliest of days, Maldivians have relied on fishing and farming for main food sources. While majority of staples are now imported, fish and coconut are locally sourced and included in the everyday diet of the Maldivian people. Githeyo Mirus (scotch bonnet) from Thaa Atoll’s Kandoodhoo island and watermelon from Alif Alif Atoll’s Thoddoo island are locally grown and popular across the country. These are high in demand and sold at local markets in the capital city, Malé too.

With a variety of unique flavours to choose from, some popular delicacies across the isles include Bondi from Addu City, Golha Riha from Laamu Atoll, and Haalu folhi from Haa Dhaalu Kulhudhuffushi.

Addu Bondi is a sweet made by mixing toddy with shaved coconut. It is heated, then moulded into cylinders and wrapped in banana leaves. It is typically eaten during tea time as a snack. AdduBondiis also great gift for those wanting a sweet taste of Maldivian flavours.

.15
Adaaran Select Meedhupparu V.Fulidhoo

GolhaRihafrom Laamu Atoll is a famous savoury dish. The Maldivian take on meatball curry, Golha Riha is made using reef fish. Making these fish balls require extensive work, from deboning the fish to grinding them together with a special Maldivian spice mixture. The fish balls are then cooked in coconut milk and spices. This is typically eaten with rice.

Haalu Folhi is another delicacy for those with a sweet tooth. It is a crispy, paper-thin and sweet crepe that melts in the mouth. Haalu Folhi is made from ground rice, eggs, sugar, coconut oil and water. This unique dish is made only in Haa Dhaalu Kulhudhuffushi.

Each of these dishes are prepared with extensive work, making the process an art itself. It has been taught from generations to generations, although some of the dishes are made less frequently and by fewer people compared to before, the delicacies are still popular among the Maldivian people.

With distinctive flavours and cuisines available beyond the shorelines, rich history and culture, and stunning luxury island resorts, Maldives offers unforgettable experiences. Guests can indulge in immersive cultural experiences at guesthouses and boutique hotels on local islands or cruise across the pristine islands on a safari boat. The Maldives caters to all travellers, from adrenaline seeking surfers and water-sports enthusiasts, to those looking for a luxurious island getaway or even business leisure trips.

What inspired you to pursue a career in the hospitality industry, and how has your journey evolved over the past 33 years?

I began my career in Accountancy, with plans to pursue the ACCA program in Singapore. However, after taking a part-time job at a hotel while waiting for the program to begin, I discovered a passion for the hospitality industry. I was initially drawn to the hospitality industry through my passion for food and the joy of making people happy through culinary experiences. The excitement of orchestrating a team to feed a multitude of people was a powerful motivator for me.

My journey in the hospitality industry began with humble beginnings as a steward, where I discovered my passion for providing exceptional service and creating memorable experiences for guests. Over the past 33 years, my career has been a continuous journey of growth, learning, and adaptation.

What inspired me to pursue a career in hospitality was the opportunity to connect with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures. Each step of my journey has presented new challenges and opportunities to learn. I firmly believe in never stopping learning, and every day in this dynamic industry offers something new to discover.

One of the most enriching aspects of my career has been the opportunity to work in various countries such as Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam, Philippines, Cambodia, Thailand, Seychelles, London, Australia, and several places in Europe, before finding myself in the Maldives. Each location has offered me invaluable insights into different cuisines, cultures, behaviours, and beliefs.

I am profoundly grateful for the experiences I’ve gained along the way. The knowledge, skills, and strong work ethic I’ve developed have been instrumental in shaping my career and bringing me to where I am today as the Group General Manager.

As the Group General Manager at Madifushi Private Island, what strategies do you implement to ensure exceptional guest experiences and maintain high standards of service?

As the Group General Manager, ensuring exceptional guest experiences and maintaining high standards of service are paramount to our success. One of the key strategies I implement revolves around anticipating guest needs before they even have to ask. This proactive approach involves thorough training of our staff to be attentive and observant, allowing them to anticipate and fulfill guest requirements seamlessly.

Furthermore, I firmly believe in never compromising on quality, whether it’s our products or the experiences we offer. Our guests come to Madifushi for a vacation of a lifetime, and it’s our responsibility to ensure that every aspect of their stay exceeds their expectations. By consistently delivering top-notch service and maintaining meticulous attention to detail, we guarantee that each guest leaves with unforgettable memories and a desire to return.

In essence, our strategy revolves around anticipating, exceeding, and consistently delivering on guest expectations, ensuring that Madifushi remains a premier destination for luxury and relaxation.

With three decades of experience, what significant changes have you witnessed in the luxury hospitality sector, and how do you adapt to evolving trends and guest preferences?

In the past thirty years, the luxury hospitality sector has evolved significantly, shaped by changing guest preferences and industry dynamics. As someone deeply involved in this field, I’ve witnessed these changes firsthand and have continuously adapted to keep our offerings exceptional and relevant.

.23

• Customer-Centric Experiences: Guests now seek unique, personalized experiences. We’ve responded by offering tailor-made options, from bespoke excursions to customized dining, ensuring individual preferences are met throughout their stay.

• Technological Integration: Technology has transformed guest interactions with hospitality services. We’ve embraced innovations like contactless check-ins and digital concierge services accessible via mobile phones, enhancing convenience while maintaining a personal touch.

• Culinary Innovation: Modern luxury travelers desire adventurous culinary experiences. We continuously innovate our offerings, source high-quality ingredients, and incorporate diverse cuisines to meet evolving tastes.

• Workforce Dynamics: Workforce dynamics have shifted significantly, with recruitment becoming more challenging due to a competitive market for skilled employees. The new generation values flexibility and meaningful work experiences, leading to changing expectations in workplace culture and benefits.

In conclusion, staying abreast of evolving trends and guest preferences is essential in the luxury hospitality sector. By continuously adapting our strategies and offerings, we ensure that we remain at the forefront of delivering exceptional experiences that exceed our guests’ expectations while fostering a supportive and dynamic work environment for our team members.

Managing a private island resort requires meticulous attention to detail. Can you share some of the unique challenges you’ve faced in this role and how you’ve overcome them?

Operating a resort on a remote island presents logistical challenges and risks, such as limited access to resources and potential natural disasters. To tackle this, we’ve developed robust contingency plans, built strong supplier relationships, and trained our team for emergencies.

Preserving the island’s natural beauty while accommodating guest activities requires sustainable practices like waste management and energy conservation. We’ve invested in eco-friendly technologies and educated guests and staff on environmental stewardship.

Meeting guest expectations for luxury and personalized service demands meticulous attention to detail. We gather feedback, train staff, and innovate offerings to provide bespoke experiences.

Adverse weather and natural disasters pose ongoing risks. We implement safety protocols, conduct regular risk assessments, and maintain transparent communication with guests.

Recruiting skilled staff in remote locations has been challenging, but we’ve overcome it through persistence and networking. Logistical challenges

include sourcing essential supplies efficiently. Careful planning, reliable supplier relationships, and open communication are key.

In summary, managing a private island resort requires addressing various challenges while prioritizing guest experiences, sustainability, staff well-being, and safety. Through strategic solutions and a dedicated team, we ensure our resort remains a premier destination for luxury and relaxation.

Sustainability and responsible tourism are increasingly important in today’s hospitality landscape. How does Madifushi Private Island incorporate environmental initiatives into its operations, and what role do you believe luxury resorts should play in environmental conservation?

Sustainable tourism’s future hinges on local efforts, but globally, the hospitality industry prioritizes sustainability to meet eco-conscious traveler demand. In MIC, we’re partnering closely to drive sustainability through key initiatives:

• Tetra Pack Water Transition: Shifting from plastic bottles reduces waste.

• Food Decomposers: Introducing composting for organic waste promotes eco-friendly waste management.

• Glass Upcycling: Repurposing glass waste into furniture minimizes environmental impact.

• Seawater Bottling Plant: Producing drinking water locally reduces reliance on single-use plastics.

These actions demonstrate our commitment to environmental sustainability and responsible resource management.

Leadership is crucial in maintaining a cohesive team and driving success in hospitality. Could you describe your approach to leadership and how you foster a positive work culture among your staff members?

In shaping a hospitality establishment’s culture and success, leadership is paramount. My approach revolves around:

• Leading by Example: I embody the values I expect from my team.

• Clear Communication: I foster trust through open, transparent communication.

• Empowerment and Development: I provide tools and opportunities for my team to excel.

• Recognition and Appreciation: I prioritize acknowledging and celebrating team achievements.

• Embracing Diversity and Inclusion: I promote a culture where every team member feels respected and valued.

By embracing these principles of leadership and cultivating a positive work culture grounded in trust, respect, empowerment, and collaboration, I ensure that my team members feel motivated, valued, and inspired to deliver their best every day.

Beyond your role as Steve Ng, the Group General Manager, how do you define yourself?

I’m a simple person with a passion for cooking and perfection. Cooking brings me joy and allows me to bring joy to others through delicious meals. In both my personal and professional life, I’m dedicated, detail-oriented, and committed to excellence.

Fairness is a core value guiding my actions. I believe in treating others with respect, honesty, and integrity, fostering environments where everyone feels valued and heard. Upholding values of kindness, integrity, and honesty is essential, while intolerance of harm and dishonesty is crucial for trust and well-being.

Overall, I define myself as someone who finds joy in simplicity takes pride in his work, and values fairness and integrity above all else. These qualities shape my identity and influence how I interact with the world around me.

Empowering Women

The JOALI Story

As we celebrate International Women’s Day, it’s imperative to shine a light on stories of empowerment and leadership that inspire change and progress. Among these remarkable narratives is the story of JOALI, standing as a testament to the vision and determination of its founder, Esin Güral Argat.

Esin Güral Argat, the Vice President of Gürok Group, envisioned JOALI as more than just another luxury resort in the Maldives; she dreamed of creating a sanctuary that celebrates women’s economic and creative aspirations. Inspired by the fiery spirit of woman entrepreneurship, Esin Güral Argat set out to establish JOALI with a mission to empower women through education, vocational training, and social entrepreneurship.

At JOALI Maldives, the percentage of female hosts is 30%, whilst, at JOALI BEING, female empowerment is 35%, making it the highest female ratio in a resort in the Maldives, receiving awards by the Ministry of Tourism for two consecutive years (2022 and 2023).

One of JOALI’s flagship initiatives is its dedication to celebrating feminine creativity through events like JOALI Art Week, a five-day experience that pays tribute to women in art and celebrates their creative contributions. In 2022 four local women artists joined the Resident Artist at JOALI Maldives to share their creativity with guests through live art sessions,

interactive workshops, and immersive exhibits. Several original artworks were also made available for purchase.

At JOALI BEING, the exclusive Art House nurtures local artisans as well as art-lovers through imaginative events and workshops together with the local, female resident artist. For special events and activities, they invite local female artists to visit and conduct workshops, live art sessions and showcase their work.

Moreover, JOALI is not just female-owned; it actively promotes gender equality and diversity at all levels of its organization. With a leadership team characterized by empathy and dynamism, JOALI capacitates women by providing them with opportunities for growth and development within the country’s highest-earning industry and workforce. The resort employs almost double the national average of women, demonstrating its commitment to fostering gender inclusivity and women’s empowerment.

JOALI’s commitment to supporting local women extends beyond the realm of art. Through initiatives like the Leadership and Gender Diversity Program, the resort invests in the professional advancement of women within the organization. The family at JOALI actively contributes to community development projects, such as donating funds to women’s

development committees and supporting initiatives like #FehiFathi, which aims to empower local seamstresses and reduce fabric waste.

In line with its dedication to environmental sustainability and female empowerment, JOALI also supports initiatives like #CodeforClimateMV, which promotes climate awareness through coding workshops for girls in local schools.

Inspired by the visionary founder, Esin Güral Argat, JOALI illuminates the path forward by highlighting the immense impact of women’s leadership, creativity, and collaboration in shaping a more inclusive and equitable society. Through Esin Güral Argat’s unwavering commitment to uplifting women and fostering gender equality, JOALI not only enriches the experiences of its guests but also leaves a lasting imprint on the communities it serves.

As we reflect on JOALI’s journey, let it serve as a reminder of the endless possibilities that emerge when we embrace the full potential of women’s voices and talents.

Together, let us continue to champion the cause of proactively empowering women and girls, paving the way for a brighter and more promising future for all.

Enver Arslan

Area General Manager, JOALI Resorts

What inspired you to pursue a career in the hospitality industry, and how has your journey evolved over the past years?

Even at a young age, I have been fascinated by the hospitality industry. Hospitality is all about people, and it’s one of the most creative industries anyone can come across - a melting pot of cultures, ideas, and ever-changing perspectives and trends. After graduating from Erciyes University with a Bachelor’s in Education, my journey began in the Four Seasons brand in Food and Beverage in the US, Wyoming, miles away from home, Turkey, gradually moving across the world from Saudi Arabia to settling in the Maldives in 2014, filling different roles in the hotel operations.

In 2017, I officially joined JOALI brand as the Resort Director, to debut a lifestyle luxury hospitality brand in a sea of well-established international brands operating for over 30-50 years. Now, here we are, after seven years with two islands, JOALI Maldives and JOALI BEING, and soon-to-open JOALI Kaafu. I am extremely humbled and proud of the success the brand has gained within a short span of time, and I am looking to lead the brand to an exciting era of hospitality.

How do you envision the future growth and development of the JOALI brand within the competitive luxury hospitality market of the Maldives?

JOALI is a distinguished brand, a dream born to create a meaningful lifestyle hospitality brand with a soul. JOALI Maldives is the first art immersive resort that opened in 2018, and JOALI BEING is the first wellbeing island that made its debut in 2021, positioned successfully in the ultra-luxury segment. Maldives is a competitive market. However, JOALI is true to its beliefs and has strong core values of sustainability and female empowerment. We share our success with our talented and passionate hosts, and proud to have a strong local team in leadership. The brand’s spirit and constant evolution to meet market trends, innovation, technology, and humble hospitality will definitely pave the way for a bright future.

Our guests are not just guests for us; JOALI has become a community; we have a strong base of repeat guests, reaching up to 75% during the festive season. With the new project, the brand will definitely expand even further. The family will grow as well, JOALI Maldives currently employs 452, and JOALI BEING is home to 342 employees, and we are projecting 800 employees for the next property.

Can you tell us about a significant challenge you faced during your tenure at JOALI and how you overcame it, highlighting the lessons learned and how it influenced your leadership style?

.31
JOALI Maldives - Jetty View

I believe the pandemic was an unprecedented time for all of us, and it was a hard decision as a leader to see the last guest depart, half of the team sent home and to implement ‘minimum paid leave’. We closed in March and re-opened in August; during this time, with limited resources considering the country was closed, keeping the spirits high and maintaining a positive culture was challenging. However, I strongly believe that setting strategic goals and plans can help in navigating any situation.

As a team, we conducted trainings and team building activities to improvise the facilities and services and bring creative ideas to the table to prepare for the re-opening. I am proud of the team for collectively demonstrating motivation and commitment resulting in satisfying the first batch of guests.

This has really shaped the culture of JOALI, and guests appreciate our genuine service, and we have been awarded as top in service by leading international bodies such as Leading Quality Assurance and Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star Awards.

Travelution Magazine Issue #2 | 2024
JOALI BEING: Retreat - Gate of Zero Art Studio: Ceramics

As the Area General Manager, what leadership principles do you prioritize in guiding and empowering your team to consistently deliver exceptional service and experiences?

I am an advocate for balance and I believe discipline, respect and joy are key for a successful workplace. I am hands-on in every aspect. However, I have trained my team and empowered them to lead the operations even in my absence. Communication is imperative; we are always connected, and my doors are open for everyone. as we expand, teamwork is crucial to deliver exceptional service.

Development plans are important; each individual brings skills and talents that complete the team.

If you could spend a day as a guest at your preferred JOALI property instead of managing it, what activities or experiences would be at the top of your list to enjoy?

A day in JOALI is quite special, as a guest I would wake up for a sunrise run at JOALI Maldives’ jetty, the longest jetty in a resort with about 1.3 km, followed by a swim in the turquoise blue lagoon. Breakfasts are special here, my favourite spot is the Manta Treehouse, an art installation by a South African artist, Porky Hefer, the views wonderful with a side of local breakfast, Mashuni from our talented chefs.

There is something for everyone here, you can stop by the Art Studio to learn to make your own ceramics; my daughter absolutely loves crafting pottery.

In the afternoon, I would take the speed boat to JOALI BEING, only a 15-minute ride away, for a wellbeing getaway and filling yet healthy lunch. A few of my favourite experiences include kickboxing and cryotherapy at CORE, the largest fitness centre in the Maldives and Watsu, a water therapy with acupressure and bodywork.Lunch is served in MOJO by the poolside, there are light wraps, Japanese fare and even delicious mediterranean-style fish with salads. It’s perfect and light.

For sunset, I always find myself back at JOALI Maldives, at Mura Bar, with the bartender’s special cocktails accompanied by the tunes DJ and violinist. Saoke, the signature Nikkei cuisine restaurant with a concept and menu curated by a Michelin-star chef, Yamamoto Hidemasi, is a unique experience with fresh and delicious dishes such as avocado salad, freshly prepared sushi and sashimi, Miyazaki beef dishes and Sumiyaki Charcoal Grilled Black Cod.

In the Maldives, a synonym for paradisiacal beauty with its islands draped in white sand and surrounded by azure waters lies a conservation treasure - the South Ari Atoll Marine Protected Area (SAMPA). Designated on 5 June 2009 as a Category 6 – Habitat/Species Management Area, SAMPA epitomizes the balance between nurturing marine biodiversity and providing awe-inspiring experiences for eco-conscious travelers.

This marine sanctuary, covering 42km² of the Indian Ocean, was primarily established to safeguard the year-round congregation of whale sharks, thereby supporting the local ecotourism that thrives on these gentle giants. The absence of a structured management plan and enforcement measures has been a significant hurdle, leading to 79% of the whale sharks in SAMPA bearing the scars of boat collisions. The challenges of unregulated tourist activities and overcrowding loom large, threatening not just these majestic creatures but also the quality of the visitor experience, highlighting the critical need for comprehensive management strategies.

A consortium of local stakeholders, including ministries, environmental agencies, and resorts such as Conrad Maldives Rangali Island and Sun Island Resort, is at the forefront of charting a sustainable future for SAMPA. Through initiatives like zonation, licensing for tour operators, and setting vessel speed limits, there is a concerted effort to minimize human impact while ensuring enriching encounters for visitors.

As efforts to preserve and sustainably manage this marine haven progress, SAMPA beckons travelers to explore its wonders thoughtfully, contributing to the conservation of its natural heritage for future generations.

The implementation of modern technologies like GPS tracking and drones for monitoring, coupled with educational efforts and stakeholder collaboration, underscores a commitment to sustainable tourism practices.

In this enchanting corner of the world, every visit has the power to make a difference, supporting a vision where marine biodiversity and human activity harmoniously coexist. Vishen Mootoo

Commercial Director of Cora Cora Maldives

What inspired you to pursue a career in the hospitality industry, and how has your journey led you to the role of Commercial Director at Cora Cora Maldives?

My whole family has worked in the Hospitality Industry, my father spent 41 years at the former Sun Resorts in Mauritius now re-branded as Sun Life. It started at a young age but subconsciously I was building myself to become the Hotelier I am today.

Starting as a Sales Coordinator, I had great mentors who ignited my passion for the industry. I was driven by results and a competitive mind, hence Sales & Marketing was the right direction for me to go. I have had the opportunity to showcase what I could bring to the table due to the leaders I have been working with, and this has opened doors to better opportunities which has led me to work in Mauritius, Thailand, UK, and Maldives.

I have had the opportunity to do pre-openings of Resorts in both Mauritius & Maldives, which led me to learn more about the whole mechanism of how to do market research, pricing analysis, resort positioning, branding, PR / Media collaboration, and E-commerce. After six resorts pre-opening in the Indian Ocean

and having opened Cora Cora Maldives successfully, the Executive Management decided to hand me the role of Commercial Director and lead the team with all the exciting projects we are working on and most importantly assisting the team to keep Cora Cora Maldives under the spotlight.

Can you describe the unique selling points that set Cora Cora Maldives apart from other luxury resorts in the Maldives?

• The Premium All-Inclusive – Gourmet Meal Plan®: It fully gives the Freedom to all our guests to indulge in our culinary offerings without any restrictions.

• Dutch Onion®, our unique museum is one of a kind in a Resort environment, where our guests can take a guided tour and learn about the culture but most interestingly the artifacts found on the island and neighboring islands.

• Creative Activity Lessons – painting class, where you can choose a canvas and recreate your favorite painting to take home. Different scents & spices can be explored at the candlelight-making workshops at MOKSHA Spa & Wellbeing Centre®. My Coffee® (Café / Bar) explores exquisite flavor profiles from dark-roast espresso, a mediumroast latte, to a light roast filter.

How do you approach the challenge of balancing sustainability initiatives with the demands of a luxury hospitality market?

Today’s trend, sustainability, is a subject that echoes daily in our approach to every new project we undertake. At Cora Cora Maldives, we prioritize sustainability, ensuring it is taken into consideration at every step. We are dedicated to ensuring all our Freedom Fighters understand the importance of sustainability, which is why regular training sessions are held. As a Green Globe Certified Resort since our opening, we have established a solid foundation, enabling us to effectively balance sustainability with our offerings to our guests.

We take pride in being a zero-plastic resort, utilizing coffee bean residue in our spa for further treatments, implementing a food waste management program, and employing 100% LED lighting across the resort. Additionally, we prioritize education and engagement with local communities about sustainability, recognizing its importance beyond our resort’s boundaries.

With the growing importance of digital marketing and online presence, how do you ensure that Cora Cora Maldives maintains a strong digital footprint and engages effectively with potential guests across various online platforms?

To keep the spotlight on Cora Cora Maldives, we have to be proactive in our approach and have a clear understanding of the demand and what the end consumers are looking for since there are so many options out there today.

Online presence is vital and will work only when the right content is shared, which will give us the edge over our competitors.

Finally, in your industry reputation as the Commercial Director of Cora Cora Maldives, once we set that aside, how would you define your identity?

I thoroughly enjoy cooking and hosting friends at home for BBQ gatherings. Also, traveling as much as I can and hiking mountains (when time permits).

Since 2023, I have pursued a new interest and obtained certification as a PADI Open Water diver. This newfound hobby has quickly become a source of joy and excitement in my life.

Bonus question: If you were to create a “Cora Cora Maldives” signature cocktail, what would be the key ingredients and what would you name it?

Rose water, honey, white rum, a sprinkle of cinnamon, and decorate it with a Frangipani flower. I will call it CORAMAZING!

Fun under the Maldivian sun!

Welcome to the Maldives, where the sun kisses the ocean, and the sand sparkles under an endless sky. As you prepare to dive into this paradise, let’s talk about an essential travel companion that’s as important as your swimsuit and sunglasses - sunscreen! The Maldives offers not just breathtaking views but also a sun that can be quite generous with its ultraviolet (UV) rays. This friendly reminder is not to dampen your spirits but to ensure that your holiday memories are as bright and beautiful as the Maldivian atolls, minus the sunburn.

Travelution Magazine Issue #2 | 2024

Protecting your skin from the sun is not just about avoiding sunburn; it’s about preserving your health and ensuring that your holiday in the Maldives remains a source of joyful memories.

Understanding the UV index—a gauge of the sun’s ultraviolet radiation level—is crucial. It alerts us to how swiftly our skin can succumb to damage. A reading of 3 or higher on the index signals a need for protective measures. In the Maldives, the sun seldom takes a break from these intensities, making sunscreen an indispensable ally.

Consider sunscreen your invisible armor, enabling you to savor every sun-kissed moment, from snorkeling amongst the kaleidoscopic marine life to sipping a cocktail on the powdery beaches. Here’s how to balance fun and skin safety under the Maldivian sun: Choose Your Sunscreen Wisely: Look for a broadspectrum sunscreen that guards against UVA and UVB rays, with an SPF of 30 or higher. Remember, UVA rays can prematurely age your skin, while UVB rays are the main culprits behind sunburn. (A = Age, B= Burn) Apply Generously and Reapply: Use about two finger lengths of sunscreen for your face, and don’t forget to cover all exposed areas of your body. Reapply every two hours, or more frequently if you’re swimming or sweating.

Embrace the Shade: The sun is strongest between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., so why not enjoy a leisurely lunch under an umbrella or take a siesta in your villa? It’s the perfect time to recharge for your next adventure. Wear Protective Clothing: A wide-brimmed hat, UVprotective sunglasses, and long-sleeved cover-ups are stylish ways to add a layer of defense against the sun. After Sun Care: After a day under the sun, pamper your skin with aloe vera or a hydrating moisturizer. It helps soothe any sun exposure and keeps your skin glowing.

.90

So, slather on that sunscreen, embrace the warmth, and let the islands’ enchanting beauty sweep you off your feet, safely and sunburn-free.

It’s a myth that only those with fair skin need to be vigilant about sun protection. Regardless of your skin tone, the sun’s UV rays can cause damage, leading to sunburn and increasing the risk of skin cancer. Yes, melanin provides some natural protection, but it’s not a complete shield against the harmful effects of the sun. Protecting your skin from the sun is not just about avoiding sunburn; it’s about preserving your health and ensuring that your holiday in the Maldives remains a source of joyful memories. So, slather on that sunscreen, embrace the warmth, and let the islands’ enchanting beauty sweep you off your feet, safely and sunburn-free.

Resort Musician Featured artist Meraki Coffee Roasters

Can you tell us about your experience as a resort vocalist and keyboardist? What drew you to this profession and what keeps you motivated in it?

Working as a resort musician has been an incredible journey for me. I’ve always had a deep-rooted passion for music since I was only five years old, and being able to share it in such a breathtaking setting like the Maldives is truly special.

As a resort musician with six years of experience, I’ve noticed a common misconception about the role. Some see it as simple, but it’s far from that. It demands discipline in punctuality, teamwork, and adaptability. Being ready for unexpected gigs and early flights is key. Heavy equipment handling and flexibility in hours are also vital. Building strong relationships with resorts relies on this discipline, making it as crucial as any other profession.

I was drawn to this profession by the chance to merge my love for music with the stunning backdrop of the Maldives. Performing here, surrounded by diverse audiences, is inspiring. Music serves as a universal language, uniting us all.

What keeps me motivated is witnessing the joy my music brings to guests. Creating memorable experiences for them is deeply fulfilling. Each performance is an opportunity to uplift spirits and enrich their stay. Positive feedback fuels my passion, driving me to excel with every show.

Being a resort vocalist and keyboardist lets me express my musical passion while enhancing the enchanting ambiance of the Maldives. The smiles on guests’ faces make it all worthwhile.

How do you typically prepare for a performance? Can you walk us through your rehearsal process.

Preparation is key for polished performances as a musician. I prioritize consistent practice to keep my repertoire fresh and adaptable. Before each show, I carefully select songs to match the event or audience, allowing room for requests.

While last-minute gigs are common, major events like Christmas or New Year’s demand extensive preparation. For full band performances, we start rehearsing months in advance, scheduling weekly practices to synchronize our ensemble.

Even smaller gigs serve as valuable rehearsals, refining our setlist and stage presence. Throughout, consistent practice ensures memorable and engaging performances for my audience.

How do you incorporate local culture and music traditions into your performances at the resort, and how do you believe this adds value to the guests’ tourism experience by providing them with a taste of the destination’s authentic identity?

Incorporating Maldivian culture into my resort performances is a top priority. I try to include at least three Maldivian original compositions in every gig, showcasing our rich musical heritage.

For some performances, I introduce guests to traditional Maldivian instruments and attire, providing insight into our culture. For events like the Halloween show at Summer Island Resort, I wore a “feyli” - modified to create a modern look while still incorporating elements of Maldivian culture. This attire served to provide guests with a glimpse of our heritage in a contemporary context.

I’m also proud to share my original composition, “Naanaa,” with the Prism Band. Though it may not be performed live at the resort, I ensure that guests can access it through the YouTube video we created for the song, along with the English translations.

Travelution Magazine Issue #2 | 2024

During COVID-19 lockdowns, I collaborated with Summer Island Maldives on a cover of the original Maldivian song “O Vazan” (O Nation). This cover, deeply rooted in our cultural heritage, includes English translations, allowing tourists to appreciate its significance even if they’re unfamiliar with the Maldivian language or culture. And whenever guests express interest in my original compositions, I make sure to share the links to both “Naanaa” and the cover of “O Vazan.”

In essence, my performances are not just about entertainment; they are about preserving our cultural heritage. And I strive to create memorable experiences that connect guests with the authentic identity of the Maldives.

.99

What challenges do you encounter within your field of work, if any? Additionally, how do you propose these challenges could be addressed or improved?

In my music career, I often face challenges like limited opportunities, especially during off-peak seasons. Improved networking platforms or centralized booking systems could help connect musicians with venues more efficiently. The Musicians Union of Maldives (MUM’s) has made positive strides in this regard.

Another challenge is obtaining high-quality instruments affordably, often requiring expensive imports due to customs duties and shipping fees. Addressing this might involve local production or reducing customs duties.

Despite these hurdles, I’m grateful to pursue music full-time in the Maldives, acknowledging the struggles of many musicians who don’t have consistent work. Nonetheless, I remain grateful for the support provided by our vibrant tourism sector, which allows some of us to make a living doing what we love. By addressing the challenges faced by all musicians, we can work towards a more inclusive and supportive environment for everyone in the music community.

A word of advice to anyone who wants to follow a similar path?

For aspiring musicians, dedication and passion are essential. Embrace the journey’s highs and lows with perseverance. Every performance, big or small, contributes to your growth. Network actively and utilize platforms like the Musicians Union of Maldives (MUM’s) for support. Use social media and streaming services to reach a wider audience, connect with fans, and create valuable opportunities for your career growth.

Invest in your skills and equipment, even if it means overcoming financial hurdles. Remember, authenticity is your greatest asset—stay true to yourself and your cultural roots while embracing diversity in your musical expression. With determination and a genuine love for music, you can carve out a fulfilling career in this dynamic industry.

Unveiling the Hidden Jewels of the Maldives: Nudibranches

Pseudoceros susanae Common name: Susan’s Flatworm

The Maldives, with its crystal-clear waters and teeming marine life, is a haven for divers and snorkelers alike. While many are captivated by the splendor of its coral reefs and exotic fish, there exists a realm of enchantment just beneath the waves – the mesmerizing nudibranchs, affectionately known as sea slugs.

At first glance, spotting a nudibranch may not seem like a significant encounter. Picture a diminutive, sluglike creature gliding gracefully across the reef bed. Yet, for those acquainted with these peculiar critters, stumbling upon one is akin to discovering a hidden treasure trove.

Nudibranchs, often dubbed sea slugs, are captivating creatures with a narrative as vibrant as their appearance. These marine gastropod mollusks shed their shells post-larval stage, earning them their moniker – a fusion of Latin and Greek, meaning “naked gills.” With their gills exposed externally, they navigate the underwater expanse with poise, seeking out their next culinary delight.

What distinguishes nudibranchs, however, is their breathtaking beauty. With over 2000 identified species worldwide, each boasts a distinct palette of hues and peculiar forms. From electric blues to fiery oranges, their vivid colors attest to the myriad of life beneath the waves. Intriguingly, nudibranchs derive their stunning hues from their diet, enabling them to blend seamlessly into their surroundings.

Furthermore, the Maldives is swiftly gaining acclaim as a hotspot for macro photography enthusiasts. With its diverse biodiversity and unspoiled waters, this tropical paradise offers an ideal canvas for capturing the intricate nuances of marine life, including nudibranchs. General Manager, Grand Park Kodhipparu

What inspired you to pursue a career in the hospitality industry, and how has your journey led you to the role of General Manager at Grand Park Koddhipparu?

From a young age, I’ve always been drawn to the magic of creating unforgettable experiences for others. I am originally from Italy where I grew up in a culturally rich environment and I was exposed to the significance of hospitality and the profound impact it has on people’s lives. This innate passion led me to pursue a career in the hospitality industry, where I could freely explore the many destinations and travel across the world doing what I love the most.

Throughout my journey, I’ve had the privilege of working in various roles within the hospitality sector, across various geo markets where each experience allowed me to refine my skills and fall in love with hospitality even more.

Arriving at Grand Park Kodhipparu Maldives resort feels like the culmination of my journey so far. The Maldives has always held a special place in my heart. Joining this esteemed resort as General Manager allowed me to lead a team dedicated to delivering extraordinary moments for our guests. My journey to this role has been marked by a relentless pursuit of excellence, a commitment to service, and a genuine passion for creating unforgettable memories.

That’s Grand Residence

Grand Park Koddhipparu is renowned for its exceptional hospitality. Can you elaborate on the measures the resort takes to ensure a consistently high-quality guest experience?

Me and my team understand that delivering exceptional hospitality is not just a goal, but a commitment ingrained in every aspect of our operations. We take pride in our relentless pursuit of excellence and unwavering dedication to exceeding guest expectations. At Kodhipparu, we take pride in being recognized as a boutique luxury resort that invites guests to “come as you are” to learn the true art of unwinding in paradise.

For this, we pay extreme attention to detail. For example, we understand that after a long flight and a short speedboat ride, the guests are bound to be tired. So, upon arrival to Kodhipparu, we do not keep any guests at the reception for check-in but are escorted to their villa for personalized in-villa check-in. So, the holiday simply begins the moment you touch down at our resort.

Also, we believe in co-existing with nature and being focused on driving sustainability so that the guests are welcome for a guilt-free holiday. Starting from metal straws, solar energy generation, water purification, and sand barging to coral propagation, we extensively engage in sustainable practices. Our commitment to the environment has repaid us kindly as we are blessed with a very active and vibrant house reef as well as over 50 different types of flora and fauna on our island ground.

We are also committed to staying ahead of the curve and constantly seeking ways to elevate the guest experience. Through regular feedback channels, we listen attentively to guest suggestions and actively implement improvements to enhance their future stays.

Could you share some insights into the culinary philosophy of Grand Park Koddhipparu and how it sets the resort apart in terms of exceptional dining offerings?

The culinary experience is a much-accoladed form of art at Kodhipparu deeply rooted in a commitment to delivering not just meals, but unforgettable gastronomic experiences.

Across the three dining outlets of the resort, as well as the range of private dining experiences, quality plays a central role in delivery. We source only the finest ingredients, handpicking fresh produce, seafood, and meats to ensure the highest standards of quality and flavor in every creation.

Our culinary offerings celebrate the rich diversity of global cuisines while staying true to the authentic flavors and traditions that define each dish.

Whether it’s a romantic pergola dinner under the stars, or a bespoke wine cellar experience crafted to showcase the best of our culinary repertoire, we go above and beyond to create unforgettable dining experiences.

As someone with extensive experience in the hospitality industry, what guidance would you offer to young hoteliers who are just starting out in their careers?

With over 40 years of experience in hospitality, I have gathered some knowledge that I always share with young hoteliers.

The hospitality industry is dynamic and constantly evolving, so never stop learning. Be curious, seek out new experiences, and stay abreast of industry trends and best practices. Whether it’s through formal education, on-the-job training, or mentorship,

Travelution Magazine Issue #2 | 2024

continuously expanding your knowledge and skill set will set you apart in this competitive field.

Hospitality is more than just a job; it’s a passion. Cultivate a genuine love for serving others, creating memorable experiences, and exceeding expectations. Let your passion drive you to excel in every aspect of your work.

The hospitality industry is inherently dynamic, with ever-changing guest preferences, market trends, and external factors. Learn to adapt quickly to new challenges, embrace change with agility, and turn obstacles into opportunities. Flexibility and resilience are essential qualities for success in this fast-paced environment.

Passion and dedication are paramount to be successful for young talent in our industry. The hospitality landscape changes rapidly, paving the way for hoteliers with adaptability to succeed in their careers. Have patience and allow the organization to foster your growth.

“Finally, always remember to stay humble and grateful for the opportunities you’ve been given. Hospitality is a privilege, and it’s important to approach each day with humility, gratitude, and a genuine desire to make a positive difference in the lives of others”.

Unraveling the Tale of the Sarong

A Journey into Coastal Couture with the Sarong

In the radiant realm where sandy shores meet the glistening waves, one garment stands out, transcending time and culture with its unmatched allure—the sarong. Emerging from Southeast Asian heritage, the sarong has journeyed through centuries, evolving from traditional attire into a global fashion icon synonymous with seaside sophistication.

The term “sarong,” originating from the Malay word “sarung,” meaning “to sheathe” or “to cover,” unveils a captivating story against the backdrop of the Malay Archipelago. Initially worn by both genders, the sarong, crafted from airy fabrics like cotton or silk, offered a breezy escape from the tropical heat while radiating cultural opulence. Beyond its practicality, the sarong holds profound cultural significance in Southeast Asian societies, intricately woven into local traditions, with each region boasting unique styles and motifs.

During the colonial era, European traders and colonizers were captivated by the sarong’s exotic

charm, and it quickly infiltrated European fashion circles. As the 20th century unfolded, the sarong became a global fashion staple, favored for its lightweight fabric and endless styling possibilities, making it the ultimate choice for beach enthusiasts seeking comfort and style.

The versatility of the sarong transcends its beachside origins, becoming a staple in urban wardrobes. From chic wrap skirts to statement dresses, the sarong effortlessly transitions from day to night, embodying the essence of effortless glamour.

Much like the sarong, the “Mundu” and “Feyli” of the Maldives epitomize elegance, their rectangular fabric skillfully draped around the waist, adorned with intricate patterns of parallel lines. These traditional garments transcend gender boundaries, with men complementing their Mundu with shirts or t-shirts, while the Feyli offers a more relaxed yet refined look. For women, the Feyli effortlessly complements the “Dhivehi libaas” and “Hedhun Buri” attire, adding a touch of sophistication to their ensemble.

However, the Feyli and Mundu have transitioned from everyday wear to cherished pieces reserved for special occasions among Maldivians. To pay homage to their cultural significance, local brands have meticulously crafted their interpretations of these exquisite accessories. Despite this shift, the allure of the Feyli endures as the quintessential beach cover-up in the Maldives, serving as a symbol of its timeless charm.

As we bask in the beauty of coastal landscapes, let us embrace the sarong not just as a garment, but as a symbol of unity, blending tradition with contemporary flair in a harmonious dance by the sea. In its gentle folds, we find echoes of the past and whispers of the future, a reminder that some things, like the timeless elegance of the sarong, are destined to endure forever.

Beyond the Beach:

Exploring the Mangrove Mysteries of the Maldives

Unsplash: Abdulla Iyaan

When we think of the Maldives, our minds are often filled with images of pristine white sand beaches and turquoise waters that stretch into the horizon. We might also imagine the underwater marvels lying beneath these waters, home to vibrant coral reefs and a variety of majestic marine life, including whale sharks and manta rays.

Yet, the Maldives harbors a lesser-known treasure: its enchanting mangrove forests. These forests are dispersed across 108 islands, with a significant presence in the northern regions. Here, in these unique ecosystems where land intimately embraces sea, mangroves flourish.

Mangroves stand as marvels of nature, equipped to thrive in salty conditions that would hinder most other vegetation. They possess the remarkable ability to filter and excrete salt from the seawater they absorb. These sturdy plants play a pivotal role in coastal protection, shielding shorelines from erosion, buffering against storm surges, and mitigating the impact of rising sea levels. Beyond their protective functions, mangroves serve as natural purifiers for the surrounding marine ecosystems.

The biodiversity within these mangrove forests is astounding. Crabs navigate the complex lattice of roots, while migratory birds perch in the canopy, making these areas a haven for photographers and nature enthusiasts alike. Venture into these ecosystems to uncover a hidden realm bustling with microorganisms, insects, and nurseries of fish.

For generations, mangroves have been indispensable to local communities in the Maldives. They’ve provided materials for crafts and traditional medicine, and even sustained the population with a vital food source, “Kandoo” millet, during the trials of World War II.

Despite their significance, these ecosystems have historically been under-researched. However, the recent decade has witnessed a renewed focus on the conservation and study of Maldivian mangroves, highlighting their importance and the need to safeguard these environments.

For travelers yearning to delve beyond the idyllic beaches, the mangroves of the Maldives offer a rich, immersive experience. Engage in guided tours led by knowledgeable locals, navigate the serene channels by kayak, and marvel at the life thriving among the intricate roots. Bird enthusiasts will find joy in spotting species such as the Whimbrel, Common Greenshank, and Common Redshank, seeking sanctuary within these verdant retreats.

Step off the beaten path and immerse yourself in the ethereal beauty of the mangroves through photography tours, capturing the interplay of light and shadow, the complex patterns of roots, and the tranquil reflections on the water’s surface. Consider a journey on a traditional dhoni boat for a leisurely exploration, accompanied by local narratives that bring the history and legends of these coastal guardians to life.

While the Maldives is renowned for its paradisiacal allure, the presence of mangroves introduces an element of wild, untamed beauty to this tropical haven. On your next visit to the Maldives, seize the opportunity to discover this hidden jewel, and gain a deeper appreciation for the crucial ecological and cultural role it plays in this archipelago.
