We’re proud to launch the 4th issue of Travelution Magazine at the Arabian Travel Market in Dubai, a city that continues to connect the Maldives to the wider world and plays a vital role in shaping the region’s travel landscape.
Travelution as a brand has become more than just a magazine. It’s a space where we explore the stories behind the people, the passion, and the purpose that drive the Maldivian tourism industry forward.
We open this issue with a beautifully grounded piece that captures the natural rhythm of the Maldives, from its coconut palms to its white herons, from reef to rainforest. It’s a quiet reminder of how much beauty lives in the details.
In every issue, we look beyond what’s trending to shine a light on what truly matters—resorts, experiences, and services that raise the bar in thoughtful, meaningful ways. THE BEST, not just in luxury but in creativity, innovation, and purpose. This edition features carefully curated roundups like Lavish Multi-Room Retreats and Resorts with Designer Toiletry Sets, designed to inspire and inform your next adventure.
We’re honoured to have Oaga Art Resort as our Title Partner—an island grounded in Maldivian stories, brought to life with vivid ideas, colour, and heart. Still a newcomer, Oaga is already making bold waves through its creative storytelling, cultural soul, and fresh perspective. We had the chance to sit down with Nawaila Nashid, Co-Founder and Brand Director, whose fearless vision is helping shape a truly distinctive island experience.
Among our Gold Partners, each brings their legacy and edge to this edition.
The Standard, Huruvalhi Maldives stands in a category of its own, a retreat that refuses to be ordinary. In our conversation with Amar Lalvani, President and Creative Director of Hyatt, we explore how The Standard’s offbeat
charm and youthful spirit found its rhythm in the Maldives. Summer Island Maldives, meanwhile, celebrates a decade of barefoot bliss. Ten years of simplicity, sunshine, and heartfelt hospitality. We spoke with Mariya Shareef, Chief Operating Officer at Kaimoo Travels, about the journey so far and what it means to evolve while staying rooted.
This issue also features Mohamed Almas as our Featured Personality. He is one of the most skilled and respected anglers in the Maldives. His deep connection to the ocean and quiet mastery of the craft tells a story that’s both humble and profound.
Our pages are filled with thoughtful features—from historical reflections to cultural deep dives. Stories like From Fire to Paradise, Echoes in Blue, A 17th Century Eid in Malé, and Dhoni Dreams celebrate the layers that make the Maldives more than just a destination.
You’ll also find a selection of exclusive offers throughout the pages that have been handpicked to match the spirit of exploration that defines the Maldives.
Some of the stories in this issue made me pause. Others made me smile. All of them reminded me why this magazine exists in the first place.
And to the Travelution Travelling Team, you’re the ones who make this happen. You know who you are. Thank you for the long hours, the ideas, the flights, the shoots, the edits, and everything in between.
Let’s keep exploring together.
As we step into 2025, we reflect on a remarkable year that has demonstrated the resilience and innovative spirit of the Maldivian tourism industry. The year 2024 was marked by unprecedented growth in terms of arrivals and tourism related tax contribution to the Government.
Our industry achieved promising growth across key metrics, welcoming over 2 million visitors and recording a significant 8.9% increase in arrivals compared to 2023. The tourism tax revenue growth of 8.2%, reaching USD 619.5 million, alongside improved occupancy rates and extended bed nights, reflects the robust health of our tourism ecosystem and its vital contribution to our nation’s economy.
Looking at important initiatives of MATI, our MATI Insight, launched in 2024, aims to serve as a knowledge-sharing platform for the tourism industry. Through targeted sessions, it aims to connect industry professionals to discuss operational strategies, marketing approaches, and industry developments. The first session in May 2024 focused on revenue and marketing, with presentations from Trip.com Group, STR, Lighthouse, and Lottiefiles examining market trends and performance metrics. A follow-up strategy workshop in November provided practical frameworks for brand development and strategic planning.
Our commitment to nurturing future talent took shape through the “Discover Tourism: Exploring Career Pathways” program, which has connected with young Maldivians across multiple islands. The “Discover Tourism” program held five sessions in 2024, partnering with The Ritz-Carlton Maldives and Trans Maldivian Airways among others, to introduce students to career opportunities in tourism.
Our “ Reethi Raajje’ “ campaign, launched in October 2024, focuses on reducing littering and improving waste disposal practices nationwide. The campaign began with events in Male’ and expanded to Addu City, Fuvahmulah, and Laamu Atoll, engaging schools, councils, and local organizations in environmental education and cleanup activities.
As we venture into 2025, we carry forward these initiatives with renewed vigor and determination. Our focus remains steadfast on sustainable growth, community engagement, and industry innovation. We will continue to expand our educational outreach, strengthen our environmental initiatives, and foster knowledge sharing through our forums and MATI Insight sessions

Set across the glistening Indian Ocean, Maldives is made up of over a thousand tropical islands across twenty-six atolls. Less than 200 of these islands are inhabited by the local people and more than 180 are operational luxury resorts, leaving the remaining hundreds of islands untouched. The local time is GMT +5, and the local currency is the Maldivian Rufiyaa (MVR). The US Dollar is widely accepted with an official conversion rate of 15.42.
The Maldives has long been dubbed as paradise for its beautiful blue waters and pristine beaches. While its magnificent underwater wonderlands are popular among divers and tourists, the island archipelago is also home to a rich selection of flora and fauna. With the islands dotted with an array of tropical plants, the coconut palm stands tall
as a pillar of the local community. In addition to providing shade, the coconut palm has long been a staple in the local households. Coconuts are used in almost all local dishes while palm leaves and wood are used in building houses, mat weaving, and more. Breadfruit, papaya, banana, mango and banyan trees are also common in the Maldives.
The streets of the islands are lined with plenty of flowering plants, including hibiscus, frangipani, and jasmine, filling the air with its scent. Many local houses on the islands are adorned with bougainvillea in shades of magenta, red, and white along with pots of polyantha rose (finifenmaa) plants and vinca plants lined along the outside walls. Common across all islands, the pink polyantha rose is the national flower of the Maldives. Adding a pop of colour to the white
sandy beaches with a tapestry of pink and purple flowers, beach morning glory (thanburu) can be found along the upper parts of the beaches. Sea Lettuce (magoo), Coastal Ironwood (Kuredhi), and Bay Cedar (Halaveli) are some of the common flowering plants found by the beachside.
Mangrove forests (Kulhi) are also a vital part of the Maldives’ ecosystem. Commonly found on northern and southern islands, mangroves are home to a variety of unique plant and fish species. It offers protection from erosion and flooding in the islands while also providing a home for endangered marine life.
Although wild animals do not live in the Maldives, tropical birds including Asian Koel (Koveli), Grey Heron (Maakana), white-breasted waterhen (Kan’bili), and little tern (kiru
dhooni) live in harmony with the island’s lush foliage and can be often seen by the shores. Fruit bats or flying foxes, pigeons, and crows are also common in the islands. On ground, cats and reptiles such as geckos and oriental garden lizards can be found within the islands while ghost crabs (kakuni) and land hermit crabs (baraveli) can be seen by the shoreline.
Beneath the pristine waters of the Maldives lies a haven for ocean-enthusiasts, teeming with colourful fishes and vibrant coral reefs. It is home to different species of rays including manta rays, eagle rays and stingrays, an array of sharks such as hammerhead sharks, tiger sharks and the majestic whale sharks. Playful dolphins, turtles, and colourful fishes such as clownfish, butterflyfish, parrotfish and many more can be found in the Maldives.
The rich selection of flora and fauna plays a significant role in the islands’ ecosystems, providing harmony in coexistence. From the vibrant marine life to the tropical plants and birds, the Maldives is a haven for nature lovers, bird enthusiasts, and travellers looking to explore the unique offerings of a tropical paradise

Set in the North Malé Atoll, Oaga Art Resort is a tapestry where the tales of the Maldives come alive through a symphony of contemporary art, culture, and immersive experiences. The island is designed from ground to top with vibrant murals by some of the finest artists in the country, with each brushstroke weaving a lesser-known tale of the Maldives.
The rich Maldivian history, culture and heritage, and art are not only celebrated at Oaga, but revived through its offerings — you feel it in the colours around you, the stories you hear, and the experiences that stay with you long after you leave.
From the island’s design to the guest experiences, every minute detail is carefully planned and crafted to offer a unique platform for local artists to showcase their arts and craft. Fannuverin Fathuruverinnah –‘creatives for travellers’ is an initiative to celebrate local artists by providing a dynamic platform to consistently showcase their talents. With Suvãsthi Gallery at the heart of this initiative, every experience at Oaga is infused with vivid Maldivian artistry.
Oaga Art Resort features more than 350 hand-painted murals across the island, from its walls and pools to tables and bathrooms. With the resort’s Veyoge Gallery Villas featuring 150 art pieces by more than 30 local artists, the villas ensure each artist earns $1 per night for each displayed piece. With frequent exhibitions, Oaga offers endless opportunities to empower the Maldivian art community.
In hopes of providing a space for creators, the resort recently introduced its own podcast – ‘Beykaaru Vaahaka’ to share stories, ideas, and a passion-alike within the community. From every corner to every conversation at Oaga, local talent and local art are celebrated, creating a truly colourful experience.
Since opening its shores in 2022, Oaga Art Resort has quickly become one among the most sought-after destinations in the Maldives for travellers seeking a vibrant and immersive cultural experience. Upon arrival, guests at Oaga are greeted with a joyful ‘Aanlheoa’, like how the Maldivians have warmly welcomed visitors to their islands for centuries.
The all-inclusive resort features contemporary villas in four categories: Veyoge Gallery Pool Villa, Haruge Beach Villa with Private Pool, Bodu Haruge Beach Villa with Private Pool, and Odi Water Villa with Private Pool and Slide. Each of the villas are inspired by captivating Maldivian folk stories, from the legend of Koimala to the tale of love between Dhon Hiyala and Alifulhu. True to its name, Veyoge Gallery Pool Villa showcases a collection of artworks, resembling a mini art gallery within the villa. With its exterior made of invisible mirrors, the island’s lush greenery seamlessly conceals the villa, creating a mystical and secretive ambiance — like the love story of Khalid and Sitti, which inspired its design. With a triangular-structure, Haruge Beach Villa features modern interiors with angling roofs and a high ceiling. Inspired by the Maldivian epic of Dhon Hiyala and Alifulhu, the villa is perfect for a romantic escape. Bodu Haruge Beach Villa echoes the essence of early Maldivian kingdoms and the simple life of islanders living in harmony with the pristine seas and coconut palms. Perched atop the cerulean lagoon, the design of Odi Water Villa weaves in influences from the first settlers to the Maldives. Inspired by the story of Koimala and the first settlers, the villa represents the vessels that carried the fleets of the first settlers arriving to the Maldives with Koimala.
The coin art displayed at the deck of the villa represents the wealth and gold brought by the tribe of Dheyvis. The villa is complete with a slide leading to the lagoon, a hammock, and an expansive swimming pool.
Here, dining is more than just eating. With two restaurants and two bars, Oaga offers a feast for the senses, blending traditional flavours, art, and culture. Like a street food carnival, Kaa Kada, the resort’s main restaurant offers an array of international flavours at several food stalls in a cozy warm-lit island setting. In addition to In-Villa dining, guests can also satisfy midnight cravings throughout the night with Dhan Kada at Kaa Kada. Taking a twist on the
traditional dining in the Maldives, Samaasaa, the resort’s specialty restaurant combines fine dining with theatrical performances, offering a five-course meal paired with traditional folk stories. At Sobi Bar, guests can enjoy a collection of artisan beers from across the globe with a onetime beer tasting as part of the all-inclusive plan. For those looking to relax, play some games or swim, Raa Baa is the place to be for a day of going with the flow.
As the vivid paintings brighten the day, the island lights up at night with captivating dance performances and live music by talented artists. From high-teas, art classes, and holistic spa sessions, to picnics, pool parties, bonfires, and diving into the marvelous underwater world, experiences at Oaga are endless. Located at just a 45-minute speedboat journey away from Velana International Airport, Oaga Art Resort is more than a tropical island getaway — it is a journey into the heart of the Maldives.
We want our guests to leave Oaga not just with memories, but with a newfound understanding of the Maldives. We want them to be intrigued, to be curious, to delve deeper into the unique stories that make us who we are. We want them to forge a genuine connection with our island home, to feel the warmth of our hospitality, the rhythm of our music, the vibrancy of our art. We want them to leave with a memory that is not just authentic, but transformative, a memory that resonates long after they’ve returned home.
Was there a defining moment or personal experience that sparked your vision for Oaga as a brand?
It wasn’t a single ‘aha!’ moment that sparked Oaga. It was more of a collective awakening within our family. Oaga was, from its inception, a deeply collaborative passion project. It stemmed from countless late-night discussions, from sharing cherished childhood memories – the warmth of our grandmothers’ cooking, the joy of neighborhood traditions – all these vibrant experiences that felt so uniquely ours. There was a profound sense that we had something special to offer, something beyond the typical tourist experience.
We saw how visitors experienced the Maldives, often in a superficial way, and it didn’t align with the authentic connection we felt to our home.
As a locally owned, family business, we felt a responsibility, a calling, to create something that truly represented us, a brand that celebrated what it really means to be Maldivian.
This wasn’t just a business idea; it was a way to share the Maldives we knew and loved. We understood the unique challenge of our geography – 1200 scattered islands, each with its own distinct flavor.
It’s impossible to experience it all in one trip. So, Oaga became a carefully curated experience, a way to capture the essence of the Maldives, the highlights delivered in small, potent doses. Thus, it was envisioned as an ART resort to cohesively narrate the Maldivian story through different art forms and as a collaborative project from local creatives - spanning from architects, musicians, performance and visual artists, culinary artists to traditional healers, etc., who all worked alongside us to bring this vision to life.
Oaga, in essence, is a family’s love letter to the Maldives. Faudii, my cousin brother is a notable catalyst who helped lay the foundation of this project along with my sister and husband. A lot of local artists and other key players also joined in to contribute in different capacities at very early stages of this project. Consequently, Oaga is a storyteller, weaving the narrative of our people through a rich tapestry of art, from our intricate design and architecture to our murals, from our welcome amenities to our greetings, ‘Aanlheoa’ to ‘Hiy Huba.’ It’s a curated product, born from our shared memories and passion, designed to offer guests a genuine glimpse into the soul of our islands.
Creating something as unique as Oaga requires courage and conviction. What kept you motivated during the challenging moments of bringing this vision to life?
During the challenging moments, what truly fueled my conviction was a deep sense of personal responsibility. As a completely locally owned family business, we felt a profound need to honor our heritage and ancestors. We were driven to create a brand that not only reflected our values but also served as a legacy, something we could proudly say was built from the heart of our community. It always felt way beyond a hospitality venture, but a mission to uphold what’s truly ours.
On a deeply personal level, my ambition is significantly rooted in the unwavering support of my parents. My father’s enduring belief in our vision served as a powerful motivator throughout this journey. It required immense trust for him to entrust a project of this magnitude to us, his children. He has always been an ambitious and innovative leader, forging his own path over the past four decades. I draw considerable strength from his example, and the desire to honor his legacy by creating a brand for the next generation has been a constant driving force.
When a guest steps into Oaga, what feelings or experiences do you hope they take away?
Every villa, every space at Oaga, is a chapter in the grand narrative of the Maldives. The design and architecture are not just aesthetically pleasing; they are storytellers.
Our Odi Water Villas, for instance, are imbued with the legendary tales of Koimalaand the Deyvis tribe, a documented glimpse into the very origins of Maldivian history. The story continues throughout the resort, each space revealing a different facet of our culture. The A frames of our Haruge
villas, artistically hinting the traditional boat building structures, speak of our seafaring heritage. Throughout Oaga, over 350 murals, adorns the walls and pools, showcase diverse Maldivian narratives, as interpreted by local artists. Each mural reveal hidden stories for guests to uncover. For instance, the streetstyle cats and roosters graffitied on the walls of our bathrooms, is a playful and whimsical nod to the animals that once roamed freely in traditional Gifili bathrooms.
From the very foundation of our architecture to the minutest detail of our interior design, Oaga encapsulates the rich tapestry of the Maldivian people – our stories, our traditions, our very soul. Each element and space on this island holds a narrative, an avenue for guests to engage in a conversation about our heritage.
Oaga’s connection to Maldivian culture feels authentic and heartfelt. How has your personal relationship with local heritage shaped the way culture is expressed throughout the resort?
Growing up in Malé, I’ve witnessed firsthand the rapid transformation of our islands. The simple, interconnected life I knew as a child, where I was able to run on the roads of male’ from one grandparent’s house to the other fearlesslyfeels almost like a dream now. The pace of change, the influx
of modern influences, has undeniably altered our landscape and, in many ways, our cultural fabric.
As a Generation Z Maldivian, I stand at a unique point in our history. I’ve seen the incredible development our nation has undergone, but I’ve also felt immense loss of some of the very things that made us distinctly Maldivian – our ‘Amihlavanthakan,’ our individuality. Some of the stories that my parents, and my grandparents told me about their childhood and livelihood here – is sadly, completely unrecognizable to me. While embracing progress is essential, I believe we have a responsibility to preserve the essence of who we are.
Oaga was never about recreating a lost past; it’s about celebrating the enduring spirit of Maldivian culture, the stories that connect us to our roots, and the values that define us. It’s about finding a balance between honoring our heritage and embracing the future, ensuring that our unique identity continues to thrive – through different art forms.
Take traditional medicine, for example. My greatgrandmother was a traditional healer, and those practices are sadly lost with her. But until the introduction of modern medicine couple decades ago – our forefathers completely relied on it for their survival. Of course advancements in healthcare is undoubted fully progress, and it will be impossible to bring the art of traditional healing completely –So, our Hoba Spa, is a creative space where we can tell those stories of age-old local practices and keep that legacy alive, completely reimagined as a modern, luxury spa concept.
Our spa is dedicated to Maldivian traditional healing, featuring our own ‘Atharuge’ for Maldivian alchemy. We’ve even developed a one of its kind hydrotherapy concept, with elements like traditional well incorporated into the journey - inspired by our childhood memories of the unbeatable refreshing showers from the well. This is the kind of individual, authentic experience we want our guests to have at Oaga, something they’ll remember long after they’ve returned home – individualism, served to them in small authentic doses.
Oaga’s vibrant creative energy is fueled by its artists, storytellers, and staff. How did you go about building a team that could bring your vision to life — and what qualities were most important to you in finding the right people to shape Oaga’s character?
Oaga isn’t a static thing. It’s a living, breathing story that’s constantly being written, and the team is a huge part of that. It’s not about me hand-picking individuals to fit a mold; it’s about creating an environment where the right people naturally gravitate towards the vision and contribute their unique talents.
From the beginning, we saw Oaga as a collaborative project, a canvas where artists, storytellers, and passionate individuals
from all backgrounds could come together and paint their own strokes. Everyone who has contributed, in whatever capacity, has added a layer to Oaga’s story. I strongly believe the team’s dynamic has to be organic - It’s about the energy they bring, the way they connect, and how their individual contributions weave together to create something truly special.
Of course, we looked for certain qualities: a genuine passionate individual, a creative spirit, and their willingness to embrace our unconventional approach. But more than anything, it was about finding people who resonated with the soul of Oaga. People who understood that this wasn’t just a job, but a chance to be part of something meaningful, something that impacted our individuality, our heritage and community.
Looking back on the journey of building Oaga, what moment made you feel most certain that you were creating something truly special?
Creating Oaga was a real leap of faith. We had this vision, this dream, to create a product that was authentically ours, at the same time we were completely new to the industry and were unsure how this would take off in the market.
Our vision for Oaga remained somewhat uncertain until we actually opened our doors in December 2022. It was a euphoric dream we held in our heads, a vision we shared internally. But it wasn’t until others saw what we were trying to do here, we felt validated and truly felt we were onto something. The genuine connection our guests felt when they came on the island, it confirmed that all the love we poured into Oaga had truly made an impact.
What was the most unexpected lesson you learned while transforming your vision for Oaga into reality?
It’s difficult to pinpoint one ‘most unexpected’ lesson; the entire Oaga journey has been an ongoing learning curve.
However, if I had to choose, it would be the profound challenge of navigating the human element. Understanding and aligning diverse perspectives, shaped by individual experiences, proved far more complex than I anticipated.
While we have encouraged creative freedom in interpreting the vision, achieving true synergy has been a continuous process. This aspect, more than any other, has been the most demanding, and I don’t necessarily view it as a singular ‘lesson learned’ but rather an ongoing evolution.
As you look to the future, what excites you most about Oaga’s next chapter, and what lasting impact do you hope it will have for future generations?
Looking ahead, what truly excites me is Oaga’s evolution into a vibrant cultural hub, where creativity thrives and cultural exchange flourishes. It’s not just about preserving our heritage; it’s about creating a living space where our art, music, and stories are actively celebrated, shared, and exchanged with the rest of the world. Our art residencies, for instance, are already fostering powerful exchanges, leading to impactful projects and connections.
I envision Oaga as a beacon of hope for local creatives, and a source of inspiration for visiting artists. Currently, boasting the largest art collection in the Maldives, we aim to continue expanding this collection, making Oaga a mustsee destination and a hub for creative dialogue. The launch of our ‘Beykaaru Vaahaka’ podcast, through our Suvaasthi Gallery brand, is just the beginning of creating a space for artists to connect, collaborate, and share their work.
Ultimately, I hope Oaga inspires a shift in how luxury is perceived. We want to be a catalyst brand that redefines luxury with authenticity, embracing the vibrant colors of our culture and encouraging boldness and bravery. We want to show the world that true luxury is found in genuine connection, in celebrating our unique identity, and in empowering future generations to do the same. We want Oaga to be, not just as a resort, but as a place where creativity thrives, where cultures meet, and where the enduring spirit of the Maldives is celebrated and shared with the world.
If Oaga were a piece of art, what emotions or story would you want it to convey — and how does that reflect your own creative inspirations?
Oaga wouldn’t be a single, defined image, but a vibrant tapestry of emotions and stories, constantly shifting and evolving with each person’s interpretation. To me, that’s the true beauty of art … it’s always subjective – and that is exactly its allure.
But if I had to pin it to one word, I’d say Oaga embodies resilience. It’s a story woven into the very fabric of the resort, born after many years of struggle and taking form in the middle of the pandemic. This brand, marked by its unwavering strength, has navigated numerous struggles and challenges, boldly defying conditioned norms, and persists to do so. And I also think it’s a story that echoes the spirit of the Maldivian people, who have thrived for generations despite the many limitations on these islands.
My own creative inspiration has always been rooted in that same sense of resilience. It’s about finding beauty and possibility within constraints, about transforming limitations into opportunities for creative expression. Oaga is a testament to that spirit, a place where resilience and resourcefulness are celebrated.
“Every villa, every space at Oaga, is a chapter in the grand narrative of the Maldives. The design and architecture are not just aesthetically pleasing; they are storytellers.”

The Maldives has long been synonymous with paradise, a destination where pristine white sands and crystal-clear lagoons set the stage for unforgettable escapes. With over 1,200 islands and more than 170 luxury resorts, choosing the perfect retreat is no small feat. Yet, The Standard, Huruvalhi Maldives stands apart; offering a refreshingly playful take on Maldivian luxury, blending laid-back indulgence with bold, vibrant energy.
Known for its edgy, global boutique lifestyle brand, The Standard brings a distinctive and vibrant energy to every destination. Extending its signature style to Huruvalhi Island, offering an experience that’s as much about relaxation as it is about energy. Forget the cliché of a hushed, couples-only retreat; this is an island where laid-back luxury meets vibrant social scenes.
The adventure begins with a 40-minute seaplane ride from Malé, an experience that is as much a part of the trip as the destination itself. From above, the atolls scatter across the ocean like a painter’s brush strokes—swirls of deep navy and turquoise encircling pockets of green. Before takeoff, guests are treated to The Standard’s private airport lounge, a comfortable spot to refuel on sweets and fresh juices.
Stepping off the plane onto Huruvalhi Island, the welcome is refreshingly unexpected. Instead of the usual cocktail or towel, guests are handed a homemade coconut ice cream—a simple but perfect antidote to the tropical heat.
The Standard, Maldives offers 115 villas, split between beachfront retreats and overwater hideaways. The overwater pool villas invite guests to start their day with a dive straight from their deck into the lagoon, while the beach villas provide a more secluded, tropical setting.
Inside, the design is minimal but playful, with light woods, clean lines, and bursts of color that brighten the space without overwhelming it. The details tell a story: a ukulele hanging on the wall, snorkels and life jackets ready for impromptu adventures, and a buoy mounted like an art piece. It’s clear that this is a resort that encourages guests to dive in, literally and figuratively.
Then there’s the bathroom—a space that feels more like a private sanctuary than a typical washroom. A disco ball glimmers above the soaking tub, and glass floor panels
reveal the shifting waters below, offering a view of the ocean’s quiet movements. It’s an unexpected, almost surreal element, and one that turns an everyday ritual into something unforgettable.
But beyond the villas’ playful charm, the island’s experiences extend far beyond the walls of each retreat. From sunrise to well past sunset, flavors take center stage. The Standard, Huruvalhi Maldives refuses to let its food be an afterthought. Each restaurant has its own personality, ensuring that every meal is as much about the setting as it is about the flavors.
At Kula, the island’s all-day dining spot, the menu spans from fresh seafood to Mediterranean classics. Dishes like chili crab, grilled tuna, and an unexpectedly indulgent basil and fig crème brûlée stand out, each crafted with fresh, locally sourced ingredients.
For a deeper dive into Maldivian flavors, Guduguda offers a truly immersive experience. Named after the sound of a bubbling shisha pipe, the restaurant invites guests to dine seated on the floor, surrounded by cushions, as they enjoy dishes rich in coconut, chili, and fresh fish. Among the highlights is Kirugarudhiya soup, a fragrant tuna broth that perfectly encapsulates the island’s culinary traditions.
For those craving something more laid-back, BBQ Shak delivers a flame-grilled feast right on the sand, with succulent seafood and meat cooked over an open fire. And for an unforgettable evening, Beru Bar, perched over the water, offers a lively atmosphere complete with the Maldives’ largest disco ball and a transparent dance floor suspended above the sea, where guests can sip cocktails while gazing down at the ocean beneath their feet.
While the evenings brim with energy, the daylight hours offer a different kind of thrill—one set beneath the waves and across the island’s lush surroundings.
The resort sits on a naturally protected house reef, making it an ideal spot for snorkeling straight from the shore. Nearby, Hanifaru Bay, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, draws manta rays by the hundreds, offering one of the world’s most incredible underwater spectacles. Kayaking, paddleboarding, and dolphin-watching cruises are also on the agenda, ensuring that no two days feel the same.
For those who prefer to trade in adventure for a slower pace, the island offers more than just heart-pounding excursions. The Standard Spa is a sanctuary of stillness, where relaxation takes a more restorative form. The space includes a communal hammam, an aroma steam room, and an openair yoga deck overlooking the water. This season, the resort welcomes Dr. Tridendra Shakya for The Reset Residency, a wellness program blending acupuncture, breathwork, and holistic healing.
And when the sun goes down? The island comes alive in a different way. Movie nights on the beach, overwater karaoke, and late-night DJ sets at Beru Bar make it clear that The Standard is as much about celebration as it is about serenity. Many Maldivian resorts are designed for quiet honeymooners and serene solitude. The Standard, Maldives breaks that mold. It’s a place where guests can spend the morning in silent meditation and the evening dancing under the stars. Where snorkeling safaris and spa rituals sit side by side with floating breakfasts and island-wide pool parties.
For travellers looking for something beyond the expected, The Standard, Huruvalhi Maldives proves that paradise doesn’t have to be predictable.
I love working with smart, creative people who push boundaries, challenge assumptions, and bring ideas to life. We seek out and empower those people with the brands and platform we have built. I am in awe of people who have that type of talent and am grateful to be able to work with them
Tell us a bit about your journey in the luxury hospitality industry.
I never set out with a grand plan to be in hospitality—but life took me there and I followed. Early in my career, I was sent to Thailand in the middle of a financial crisis to look at investment opportunities. This was back in 1998. I somehow found myself at the Amanpuri. I had never seen a place so beautiful and it opened my eyes to what is possible in terms of experience creation. I stayed in the region for two years. I was young and had no idea what I was doing, but I figured it out. After that I spent time in Europe building the W brand in the Europe, Africa, Middle East region
and later globally. From there I joined The Standard and eventually bought the company because I believed in its unique DNA and where it could go. And the team and I made it happen. Starting with just LA, Miami and NYC, we have created incredible places around the world from London to Ibiza to Bangkok to Singapore and the Maldives. We will open Pattaya and Brussels this year, Lisbon and Mexico City next. And I still feel like we are just getting started especially now as part of the Hyatt family, the whole world is open to us. Hospitality, at its core, is about being open—to people, to cultures, to ideas. To exploring the world, learning, innovating and creating without limitation.
As a creative leader, it’s important to constantly generate fresh ideas. What are some of your biggest sources of inspiration??
I get inspiration from everywhere—travel, art, architecture, music, food, fashion, technology. Creativity is connecting dots, and I’m always paying attention. But inspiration alone isn’t enough. Execution is everything. I love working with smart, creative people who push boundaries, challenge assumptions, and bring ideas to life. We seek out and empower those people with the brands and platform we have built. I am in awe of people who have that type of talent and am grateful to be able to work with them
How do you see The Standard, Maldives evolving? Do you have any new concepts or creative directions that guests can look forward to?
Most resorts in the Maldives are designed for honeymooners, but we wanted to shake that up. The Standard, Maldives, is great for couples, sure, but also for friends, solo travellers, and anyone looking for a mix of relaxation and fun. It’s about bringing The Standard’s bold, vibrant DNA to one of the most beautiful and magical places on the planet. Our island is pristine with an incredible house reef. In so many ways, less is more there. We strip back the trappings of luxury where more is more. We work with the local community, sourcing responsibly, and looking for ways to reduce our impact while creating an incredible guest experience which is grounded in the natural beauty and enjoying the people you are with. We just try to provide the perfect backdrop.

It is, at its core, a living, breathing entity—an underwater metropolis built over millennia. A fragile yet resilient world, where coral polyps, tiny but mighty, construct vast structures that sustain entire ecosystems.
The Maldivian reefs trace their origins to fire and fury.
Sixty million years ago, volcanic eruptions pierced the ocean’s surface, forming a chain of towering islands. These ancient volcanoes, once alive with molten rock, eventually went dormant. And then, they began to sink.
Thirty million years ago, as the sea levels rose, coral polyps latched onto the rocky remnants, forming fringing reefs around the vanishing landmasses. In a slow, almost imperceptible rhythm of growth and submersion, the volcanoes disappeared beneath the waves, leaving behind rings of coral—atolls.
From its formation to its name, the Maldives is inextricably linked to the coral reefs that built it. The word atoll itself is a Dhivehi loanword, gifted to the English language from the very people who have lived on these reefs for centuries.
For thousands of years, the reefs continued their quiet labor. Waves and currents carried sand and coral fragments, depositing them atop the reef structures. Over time, the debris settled, accumulating into the foundations of islands— low-lying, ever-shifting, shaped by the ocean’s tides.
These islands, born from the sea, have never been fixed. They are fluid, morphing with the changing climate, the rising tides, the forces of wind and water.
And yet, for over 3,000 years, people have called them home.
Today, the Maldives boasts one of the most intricate reef systems on the planet. Covering approximately 4,500 km², these reefs support over 2,000 species of fish and nearly 300 species of coral, alongside an abundance of sea turtles, dolphins, sharks, and manta rays.
A reef is more than just coral—it is a living network, a stronghold of biodiversity. It is a hunter and a protector, a nursery and a graveyard. It is a city where parrotfish sculpt sand, where moray eels lurk in shadowed crevices, where sharks patrol the depths, keeping the ecosystem in balance.
It is a fortress, shielding the islands from the relentless battering of waves. It is an anchor, a lifeline, a source of food and livelihood.
And, for the Maldives, it is a stage—one that has captivated the world.
Long before the Maldives became synonymous with luxury resorts and overwater villas, Maldivians and the reef shared an inseparable bond. In ancient times, the reefs were harvested for coral stone, their structures dismantled to build homes and mosques. Cowrie shells, once abundant on these reefs, were gathered and traded across the world as currency.
Today, the reef is the backbone of an industry that sustains an entire nation—tourism.
Travellers flock to the Maldives, drawn by images of crystalclear lagoons, white sandy beaches, and teeming colorful coral gardens. They come to dive with whale sharks, to snorkel in shallow reefs, to experience a world that, for so long, has thrived unseen beneath the surface.
The reefs of the Maldives have endured for millions of years, outlasting the volcanoes that gave them life. But their survival in the next century is uncertain.
For all their strength, they remain vulnerable—delicate structures reliant on balance, on time, on care.
If the Maldives is to remain a paradise, the reefs must be protected.
Because the story of a reef is not just its past. It is a living story, still being written—by the tides, by time, and by the people who call these islands home.
What inspired you to become a professional angler, and how did your journey begin?
My father has always been the biggest and most positive influence in my life. I grew up watching him go fishing, and he took me along on days when he could. He worked at Mifco as a captain and often brought me to the boats he worked at. Frankly, I don’t remember a time when I wasn’t fishing.
I was a watersports instructor until I resigned, after almost two decades of working in the tourism industry. Since 2012, I’ve been incorporating sports fishing into watersports and excursion adventures, and over the years, my passion for learning and educating myself about the discipline of angling grew. Now, I can easily say I’ve always been a lifelong angler.
When COVID hit in 2020, I resigned from my watersports job to stay with my family. When we were given the chance to go fishing again, my passion finally became my full time job.
You’ve pioneered sports fishing in the Maldivian tourism. How has it evolved over the years?
Maldives is famously known for a holiday and honeymoon destination. However, this has significantly changed over the years. It’s been nothing short of rewarding to see tourists not only enjoying the blue calming waters and the white sandy beaches but also prioritizing fishing experiences. It has now become quite common for VIP guests to bring their own fishing boats and hire local guides for an exhilarating experience.
I think this explains how much sports fishing has grown within the industry. That being said, it still needs a lot of recognition and support from both the government and the fishing community.
You have guided fishing expeditions to some of the most luxurious resorts and superyachts. How do you ensure the guest experience is unforgettable?
I’m immensely grateful to have had the privilege of serving in the industry for almost two decades, which tremendously contributed to my personal growth, not to mention my understanding of guest expectations and how to deliver exceptional service.
There are a lot of factors that should be considered and managed to ensure the guests have the best experience so that they return again. Discipline, punctuality, reliability, and communication are a few key elements that reflect your dedication to providing an unforgettable experience whilst remembering that the guests are driven by your passion and energy too.
When was your most memorable yellowfin tuna catch? Can you share the experience with us?
It was in 2022 on my birthday which makes it unforgettable. I was hired by a VIP owner of a superyacht. He gave me precisely two hours to catch a tuna he’d never forget. He was a repeat guest of mine and this was the first time he set
a time limit for me to catch a fish. I guess everything was in my favour that day because I landed a 74kg tuna in just 45 minutes! Everyone on board was surprised, and saying I was happy is an understatement. Even today, I really don’t have the right words to describe that feeling. They were so delighted and they even celebrated my birthday. I think that is one of the most significant tuna experiences I’ve ever had.
What is the best time of the year for fishing in the Maldives, and why?
To be honest, there is no bad time to fish in the Maldives. However, there are certain seasons in which some species are more likely to be caught from different areas as a lot of factors have to be considered for different species.
If you could catch any fish anywhere in the world, what would it be?
Now this is hard to answer. Too many fish from too many places! I’d like to try different types of fishing from as many places as I could and I think I’m no different than any other angler in this aspect. But I’d be the happiest to catch a blue fin tuna, a white marlin from anywhere. No specific place though.
With more than 180 resorts scattered across the islands of the Maldives, it’s easy to feel like every place promises something special. But when you’re planning a trip or a once-in-a-lifetime escape, the choices can be overwhelming.
That’s where THE BEST comes in.
We don’t do rankings. We curate with intention. Every issue, we select just a handful of resorts grouped into categories that spotlight the little things that actually stay with you. Like that moment you open the bathroom drawer and find a full-sized designer toiletry set. Or the way a multi-room retreat makes space for both connection and quiet.
This issue, we explored surf resorts where the waves break just right, tennis sanctuaries tucked into jungle clearings, and retreats leading the way in eco-conscious luxury. We highlighted places that offer experiences unlike another, not because they try too hard, but because they simply do things differently.
These lists are personal. They’re shaped by conversations, site visits, and honest curiosity. We choose what we’d share with a friend or pick for ourselves.
So wherever you’re heading next, flip through these pages. Let THE BEST guide you to the resorts that get it right and the ones that leave a mark.

With sustainability at the heart of Summer Island Maldives, the resort is home to the world’s largest 3D printed coral reef. The reef was installed in 2018, designed to restore marine ecosystems affected by climate change. Recognized by Guinness World Records, the coral reef lies just beyond the resort’s main jetty. At the Blue Lagoon nursery, young corals are carefully nurtured before relocating them to the reef, where they continue to grow.
Today, the lagoon is teeming with marine life, and its residents include a giant moray eel along with an array of vibrant reef fish.
Guests can dive and snorkel through this incredible underwater world, experiencing firsthand how innovation is transforming coral reef restoration.
In addition to the reef, solar water heating, single-use plastic elimination, and the eco-friendly mosquito control system reflect the resort’s unwavering commitment to sustainability. By seamlessly blending modern solutions with conservation efforts, Summer Island offers an eco-conscious escape.
At Banyan Tree Vabbinfaru, every stay comes with a sense of purpose. More than a luxurious island escape, it’s an invitation to make a meaningful difference. Home to the Maldives’ first resort-based research and education facility, Our Marine Lab has pioneered marine conservation since 2004 - protecting endangered species, restoring coral reefs, and empowering local youth through education and community outreach.
In 2025, Our Marine Lab expands its efforts with three key initiatives: coral micro-fragmentation to maximise the survival of heat-resilient reef species, a floating mid-water nursery to support coral growth, and coral larval restoration to enhance reef regeneration and biodiversity during natural spawning events.
These efforts are underpinned by over a decade of recognised sustainability - EarthCheck Gold Certified in 2022 for consistent excellence in environmental and community practices. At Banyan Tree Vabbinfaru, each stay contributes to a legacy of marine conservation, where luxury and environmental responsibility are seamlessly intertwined.
With sustainability deeply rooted in its foundation, Ellaidhoo Maldives by Cinnamon redefines luxury travel by blending eco-conscious practices into its daily operations. From routine reef assessments and extensive recycling efforts, to eliminating single-use plastics, Ellaidhoo Maldives by Cinnamon has consistently worked towards eliminating its carbon footprint. Among its many eco-friendly initiatives include meticulously assessing the house reef through monitoring marine biodiversity, identifying threatened species and protecting them. The resort’s Ocean Data Logger project is instrumental in tracking reef water quality by providing significant insights into ocean health.
As recycling is a key practice on the island, Ellaidhoo Maldives by Cinnamon’s coral reef restoration program uses reef cubes built from recycled glass and concrete. Guests at the resort can be a part of this initiative by purchasing reef cubes and actively supporting its conservation efforts. From energy-efficient practices and responsibly disposing waste, to organic farming, Ellaidhoo Maldives by Cinnamon consciously takes proactive measures to protect the environment.

On 1st March 2025, Summer Island Maldives celebrated a remarkable milestone — ten years of crafting island escapes in the heart of the Maldives. Rooted in natural beauty and effortless charm, the resort has become a beloved sanctuary for travellers seeking a tropical, barefoot paradise amidst turquoise waters and sunlit shores.
is located
of Ziyaaraifushi, one of the Maldives’ earliest resort destinations. Acquired by Kaimoo Resorts & Hotels in 1996 and originally known as Summer Island Village, the island was reimagined in 2015 with a complete transformation, evolving into the contemporary, nature-inspired haven it is today.
From its gentle beginnings to a celebrated destination, Summer Island Maldives has continuously refined its offerings, enhancing each experience with thoughtful details.
The resort’s villas, blending comfort with a modern aesthetic, provide a seamless connection to the surrounding natural beauty.
Guests can choose from seven categories, each offering sun-dappled garden views, beachfront bliss, or the endless vistas of the ocean. The Summer House, a spacious twostory villa, is an intimate hideaway for families and friends, complete with a private pool and an outdoor dining area for an unhurried holiday.
Dining at Summer Island Maldives is a sensory delight. The island’s two restaurants and three bars offer a journey of flavours, from indulgent buffets at Samuga to intimate overwater dining at Hiya. As the sun melts into the horizon, Nevi Bar invites guests to sip on signature cocktails to the rhythm of music.
Beyond its shores, the island pulses with adventure and discovery. Traditional dhoni sunset cruises, sandbank picnics, and exhilarating watersports awaken the spirit of exploration, while Firuma by Serena Spa offers a sanctuary of calm.
With sustainability woven into its identity, Summer Island Maldives leads with a deep respect for its natural surroundings. The resort is home to the world’s largest 3D-printed coral reef, a Guinness World Record-holding initiative that supports marine conservation. The island has eliminated single-use plastics, integrated solar energy, and adopted sustainable desalination practices. Its latest eco-friendly innovation—a natural mosquito control method—further cements its commitment to preserving the environment. Beyond sustainability, the resort nurtures its people, offering in-house training and growth opportunities, empowering both employees and the wider community.

Empowering women starts with creating opportunities, and at Kaimoo, we’re committed to supporting the recruitment, training, and career growth of women across all roles. From operational staff to leadership positions, we provide a platform where women feel valued and encouraged to take on leadership roles.
You have been with Kaimoo since 2013 and played a significant role in the pre-opening of Summer Island Maldives. Can you share some of the key moments from your journey?
Being involved in the transformation of Summer Island Maldives has been a truly rewarding experience. One of the most memorable moments was taking an older property and reimagining it as a contemporary, stylish resort while preserving the natural beauty and charm that guests loved. It was a challenge to balance innovation with authenticity, but it provided the opportunity to shape a new guest experience.
Another defining moment was building a team that shared our vision for exceptional hospitality at Summer Island Maldives. From day one, we emphasised a guest-first approach, sustainability, and innovation. Seeing our team develop and take pride in their roles has been incredibly fulfilling.
Summer Island Maldives is celebrating 10 years of operations. Looking back, what achievement are you most proud of?
It’s hard to pick just one, but I am immensely proud of how Summer Island Maldives has positioned itself as an eco-conscious, guestcentric resort while maintaining an authentic Maldivian experience. Our commitment to sustainability has been acknowledged globally, and we’ve pioneered initiatives like the world’s first and largest 3D-printed coral reef, recognised by Guinness World Records, which has made a meaningful impact on marine conservation.
Beyond that, the culture we’ve built — where guests feel at home and our team members feel valued — is something I take great pride in. The fact that we see returning guests year after year and watch our team grow within the company is something I deeply value.
Sustainability is a core value at Summer Island Maldives. What are some impactful initiatives the resort has implemented, and what difference have they made?
Sustainability is woven into everything we do. One of our most groundbreaking projects has been the 3D-printed coral reef, which has helped support marine biodiversity in our waters. By experimenting with new ways to restore coral ecosystems, we aim to contribute to long-term conservation efforts.
“We have also significantly reduced single-use plastics by introducing refillable glass water bottles, ecofriendly toiletries, and sustainable alternatives to plastic straws and packaging. Our solar energy initiatives and focus on locally sourced produce further reduce our carbon footprint.”
But sustainability isn’t just about the environment — it’s also about people. We invest in training and development programmes to ensure our team grows alongside the resort, fostering a culture of responsibility and care for both nature and community.
What are some of the challenges you’ve overcome in your career, and some of the biggest lessons you’ve learned throughout the years?
One of the biggest challenges was navigating the everchanging hospitality landscape, particularly through global challenges like the pandemic. Leading Summer Island Maldives through uncertain times required adaptability, resilience, and a strong commitment to both our guests and our team.
Another challenge has been breaking barriers as a woman in a traditionally male-dominated industry. I’ve learned that perseverance, passion, and a dedicated team are key to overcoming any obstacle. The most important lesson I’ve learned is that leadership is about listening, learning, and empowering others.
As a female leader in the Maldivian hospitality industry, how have you worked to empower women within Summer Island Maldives?
Empowering women starts with creating opportunities, and at Kaimoo, we’re committed to supporting the recruitment, training, and career growth of women across all roles. From operational staff to leadership positions, we provide a platform where women feel valued and encouraged to take on leadership roles.
We’ve worked to shift perceptions about women in hospitality by showing that success is defined by dedication, passion, and skill, not gender. It’s been incredibly rewarding to see more women step into management roles and thrive at Kaimoo.
How will Summer Island Maldives grow and evolve in the coming decade?
The next decade will be about deepening our commitment to sustainability, innovation, and guest experience. We plan to expand our eco-friendly initiatives, introducing more renewable energy solutions, expanding conservation projects, and integrating even more locally sourced, sustainable products into our operations.
Technology will also play a key role in enhancing guest experiences while maintaining our warm, human touch. Personalised digital services, AI-driven sustainability solutions, and seamless eco-conscious travel will shape the future of Summer Island Maldives.
“Ultimately, the goal for Summer Island Maldives is to remain a pioneer in responsible tourism — creating unforgettable experiences for our guests while protecting the pristine beauty of the Maldives for future generations.”

Travelling with children can feel like an enormous undertaking, but I’ve learned that the right destination can make all the difference. Getting to our resort wasn’t just about the mode of transport; it marked the beginning of the adventure. We took a seaplane, and let me tell you—watching my kids press their noses against the windows, pointing excitedly at the tiny islands below, was worth every bit of planning. The view of turquoise lagoons and sandy atolls scattered across the ocean like jewels was breathtaking.
If you prefer travelling by speedboat, that’s another thrilling option. On calm days, the ride can feel like an exciting rollercoaster over the waves. My kids loved the splashing waves and the sea breeze. The fun started the moment we left the airport.
When we arrived at our resort, we were greeted by a traditional Maldivian welcome—dances, rhythmic drumming, and cool drinks. It was such a warm and lively start to our stay.
Our villa felt like it was designed just for us. Before we even entered, everything we needed was ready—cribs, a toddler bed, and even a little welcome gift for the kids. It’s the small touches like these that made us feel so welcome. Our overwater villa had a separate sleeping area for the kids, ensuring everyone had their own space to relax. Watching the sunset together from our deck and spotting fish through the glass floor was a highlight of every evening.
One of the things I appreciated most was the kids’ club. Knowing my little ones were in good hands meant I could finally enjoy some “me time.” The clubs are incredible—they offer everything from indoor to outdoor playgrounds. My eldest loved learning about coral reefs and the variety of ocean animals in the Maldives.
For the younger kids, the club had soft play areas and sensory activities. The babysitters were kind and attentive, and it felt good to know they were having as much fun as we were.
What surprised me most was the variety of activities we could enjoy together as a family. We went on a dolphinspotting cruise one evening, and the excitement on my kids’ faces when they saw dolphins leaping from the water was priceless.
Another day, we joined a painting class where we created our own ocean-inspired art. It was messy, creative, and so much fun. The resort also had a mini petting zoo, where my youngest spent ages feeding baby goats and chasing after tiny ducks.
Of course, we spent hours on the beach, building elaborate sandcastles and wading in the clear, shallow water. The kids loved finding shells and spotting hermit crabs, while I soaked in the peace and beauty of it all.
Mealtimes at the resort were surprisingly stress-free. Buffets quickly became our go-to option—they offered so many choices that even my pickiest eater found something to enjoy. My kids devoured freshly made pizzas and tropical fruit platters. The restaurant staff were wonderful, always going out of their way to make the kids feel special.
The Maldives itself is the ultimate playground. Every day felt like an adventure, whether we were swimming in the calm lagoons, kayaking as a family, or simply walking along the soft, powdery sand. Snorkeling together was another unforgettable experience. Even in the shallow water near our villa, we saw colorful fish darting around the coral. The look of wonder on my kids’ faces was priceless—they couldn’t stop talking about the “rainbow fish.”
Looking back, our trip wasn’t just a vacation— it was a chance to reconnect as a family in a way that everyday life rarely allows. From the panoramic seaplane ride to the simple joy of watching my kids laugh on the beach, every moment felt special.
If you’re considering a trip to the Maldives with kids, I can’t recommend it enough. Yes, it takes a little planning, but the rewards are immeasurable. It’s a place where you can slow down, soak in the beauty of nature, and create memories that will last a lifetime.
Kuda Villingili Resort, located in the breathtaking North Malé Atoll, is a 30-minute speedboat ride from Male’ Airport.
Enjoy the thrill of a world-class surf point just steps from your villa, with eight exceptional dining options, three lively bars, and a sophisticated whiskey and cigar lounge. Take a dip in the Maldives' largest pool, rejuvenate at the private island spa, or unwind in luxurious villas and residences - perfect for creating unforgettable memories with your loved ones.

The great author and statesmen, Mohamed Jameel wrote in 1979 “no doubt, an occasion such as Eid is when you dispose of the “me” or “self” and embrace togetherness, unity and community in its entirety”

Ask around anywhere near the end of the holy month of Ramadan and you would hear the words “Kuda” Eid or “little” Eid on most people’s smiling lips. Modern times celebrate the occasion with a myriad of activities one can only do in groups such as family or friends. As a “guest”, you will always find a friendly face beckoning you to join festivities on this day. The activities of the day are truly a sight to behold even now. However, a journey through time would be better fitted to truly showcase the role of tradition steeped deep into the very fabric of this occasion.
1602
The air is filled with the happy sighs of women as they hand-stitched the final golden threads of libaas under the flicker of baththi (oil lamps). They have been working on this for a whole year after all. A French foreigner amongst them keenly
stood, observing the frenzied ins and outs of the occasion even as twilight transcends into absolute darkness. You see, Francoise Pyrard de-Laval has possibly survived a shipwrecking, near-death illness and the ravages of climbing the social ladder of the court to arrive at this moment. The 30 something year old scribe of Maldivian history kept hearing distant calls of “Eid Mubarik”, even as he fell into his slumber that night. He will ask about it tomorrow. Having learned the language, he is no stranger to the locals gleefully explaining their strange traditions.
Not even the first shred of a watery sun greets the city and the entire populace has convened at the designated area for prayer. As he fell in step onto the streets of Male’, the feeling of peace mixed with excitement in the air was palpable. “A short service” and sermon later, the streets were filled with the aroma of Attar (perfume oil) and scents. Freshly showered and excited citizens, all dressed in their best clothes gathered at the sides of a white clothladen pathway. The Sultan and his retinue made their way slowly from the prayer towards the Palace amid sounds of cannons fired drums, flutes, and musketry.
1907 GULHAMATHI HIFUN (A Maldivian Martial Art) before the Sultan
Source: History of Maldives
Pyrard squinted his eyes and shielded it from the rising sun as he witnessed a bullock and ram being sacrificed before the king. Portions of this meat were soon being handed be handed over directly by the Sultan to statesmen and those royally-favored. Even as Pyrard made his way back into his home, he saw tents being erected quickly and efficiently all around the city. You see, the Sultan has the honor of giving the first feast, followed by statesmen and other community leaders all around the Avah (districts).
These tents were erected along main roads with freshly laden white sand beneath. They were adorned with green palm leaves and beautiful fabrics possibly dyed with the reddish-purple Dhan’bu (Java plum). Not everyone gets a bite out of every tent however as there is a separation in class between grandees and civilians.
As evening neared and darkness descended, things got a bit more theatrical. One may not be able to distinguish between the ocean and land as massive parade floats mimicking battleships are seen across the streets. Actors dressed to the nines as foreign soldiers engaged in mighty battles with the “local vessels” amid sounds of glee and calls from gathered crowds.
Closer to the palace he could see what appears to be several brave “fighters” jump and move around gracefully in their attacks in a mighty show of “combat”. All blows are caught expertly by the buckler shields and the sound of trumpets, flutes and drums fill the air. The Sultan and his court stay only for a short while before retiring for the night. Pyrard was told by his servant and mates that the festivities may last another day or two before he too, retired for the night, longing for rest and sojourn after plenty of food and conversation.

Each one a droplet in the ocean’s breath—its own rhythm, its own soul. Where the tide kisses land, where sand shifts underfoot, where wind dances with fronds and the horizon hums in blue—sound is not just heard, but felt. A living frequency. A kind of magic.
The Maldives is not one island but many. A thousand fragments of earth scattered across the ocean like a poem written in pearls. From Haa Alif in the north to Addu in the south, the nation stretches almost a thousand kilometers—its soundscape unfolding like a song composed over centuries.
Yes, there are the predictable melodies—the lapping of waves on bone-white shores, the thrum of a distant surf break, the rustle of coconut palms talking in the breeze. There’s laughter carried
through narrow alleys, children playing barefoot, fishermen calling out across harbors. But beyond that? The deeper score plays in quieter, more sacred tones.
In the pre-dawn stillness, a single note. The Koveli sings. A fragile bird with an echo of the unreal—its cry the first sound to pierce the silence of night, ringing through both quiet village islands and luxury resorts alike. It doesn’t matter where you are—in a water villa or a fisherman’s house—this is the sound that begins the day.
For over seven hundred years, the call to prayer has risen above rooftops and banyan trees—layered over the Koveli’s trill, weaving into the hum of the island like it belongs to the waves themselves. Even on the smallest sandbar with barely a dozen homes, the Adhan echoes from not one but two mosques—faith stitched into the very architecture of life.
On local islands, the rhythm is intimate: women sweeping the coral-sand roads, exchanging morning banter. Children giggling on their way to school, elders calling out reminders in a sing-song scold. The sputter of motorbikes and boats starting up. Radios hum with music, local songs that pulse along with foreign tunes in harmony.
Meanwhile, in the curated quiet of a resort, morning unfolds in gentler tones.
Espresso machines hiss behind open-air counters. A soft jazz remix of traditional flute floats from hidden speakers. Flip-flops pad across wooden decks. A yoga instructor’s calm voice rises over the breeze, layered with birdsong. It is not silence, but a designed quiet— crafted to soothe, to lull, to blend seamlessly into the natural rhythms already there.
The eternal, background resonance. Whether you’re submerged in a reef dive, snorkeling past coral gardens, or standing at the edge of an infinity pool, the underwater world has its own frequency. The clicks of reef fish, the distant calls of dolphins, the crackle of living coral—it’s a symphony hidden just below the surface.
Boduberu drums may echo across beachside stages—ancient rhythms reimagined for an audience sipping cocktails under fairy lights. On nearby islands, the same drums beat in courtyards, at weddings, at community gatherings. The sounds are the same. Only the settings differ.
An island nation not just seen, but heard. A soundscape stitched from both ancestral memory and curated experience—where the call of the Koveli meets the hiss of an espresso machine, where prayer rides the wind alongside ambient house music.
To hear the Maldives is to know it’s alive.

The essence of Maldives is a collection of clear blue waters, fiery sunsets, gardens under the sea and the warm demeanor of the people themselves. Fitting into this picturesque aesthetic is the rarely explored craftsmanship of Maldivian boats and builders, with the most traditional boat, Dhoni, still standing the test of time.
The original build of the Dhoni is historically said to be inspired by the Dhow boats hailing from Arabia and India. The Dhow boats were known to be the sturdiest companions in the Gulf and contributed to the thriving trade in the area. Maldivians used to build Dhoni using materials such as coconut palm wood which were at the heart of every island in the nation. For every family, the Dhoni was a quintessential part of daily life. From fishing for tuna, travelling to nearby uninhabited islands to collect firewood for cooking, and even transporting food and other items for trade to bigger islands, the Dhoni was at the heart of slow local living.
To this day, the most talented boat builders armed with traditional skills are from Alifushi island in Raa atoll. As recently as the 90’s, lead builders would gather a crew and travel to be based in the boat yards of Alifushi to start work on a Dhoni that could take up to 2 months to complete.
While the Dhoni used to be made completely from materials that are available locally with prime wood from coconut palms, it has gone through natural evolution to accommodate the times and materials such as fiberglass used in contemporary builds. While the sailing Dhoni dominated the horizons of the Maldivian ocean, diesel powered engines have taken its place in line with modern convenience.
However, what remains to this day is still the talent of the local builders that can walk into a boat yard and start work on a Dhoni with zero plans or blueprints drawn out. This comes from years of perseverance and craftmanship, usually passed down to generations and imprinted in their hands as a skill for life.
With the boom of tourism, the natural heartfelt hospitality of locals focused on creating quintessential experiences. There was no pretense, only authentic experiences that were very much the daily life of Maldivians themselves at the time.
he Dhoni made an appearance for every single tourist to arrive in Maldives. Ferries from the airport to the resorts, chasing dolphins leaping through the ocean, tracking the gentle whale sharks and mantas between atolls, serving as a mobile diving center exploring the depths of the islands, and cruising among the painted backdrop of the sun going down.
The Dhoni is a true testament of local craftsmanship and created equal value in wealth for families. Passed down from father to son, it is a steady pillar of support for families, providing freedom of movement and a proud source of livelihood for years to come. While it is rare, some islands still exude that wave of nostalgia with small Dhonis anchored in the lagoon, kids free diving from it, and adults cruising the length of the island trawling for fish.
Named lovingly after homes, family members or other names that carry sentimental value, the Dhoni is more than a vessel for Maldivians. It is a piece of home, a memory that does not fade and an experience that keeps on giving for generations to come. New generations have been found to be inspired by the artistry of the Dhoni build, incorporating its visual elements in the design of artisanal jewelry, apparel and homeware pieces.
As time passes, the Dhoni finds its way to stay in the lives of every Maldivian and visitor setting foot in the country. And what about the builders themselves? Many are known to be lounging in their Saranfee chairs, looking back at the good old days, with a miniature Dhoni crafted with their own hands sitting as the centerpiece of living room décor.
