FROM THE EDITOR'S CHAIR ď Ž By Bob Twigg

It was a very sad time for Kenton and Kingsbury members and the South Midland centre when Bryan Messenger passed away in late September. As you have probably read before today Bryan was a very prominent force in P65 motocross, enduros and trials. He modified many Brit' bikes to make them more competitive. He was the centre T and O champion in the 70's and 80's. This brings me to the subject of time and observation trials which have died out in the South Midland centre. Hands up all who have ridden in the Mid Bucks T and O at Brill! The club was I believe the last club to run one in the centre. In January you can imagine the conditions at the Brill "scrambles" track, often a nice coating of frost or ice to trap the unwary. The first lap of these events always seemed easy (well to me), but after a few more laps the body (or just mine) tended to flag a little. Many of the centre clubs ran the power sapping T and O's, I remember the Cambridge Matchless club ran one that included a blast down a concrete road near a farm house, a welcome rest for me but I would usually be overtaken by the "fast boys" like Bryan. The nearby Cambridge Centaur club ran one at Eversden Woods, what a course if it rained, slip sliding away! I was talking to a rider the other day and he commented that the "ace" riders don't seem to get as tired as the "lesser lights" . We concluded that if you don't have to keep picking your bike up you don't tire so quickly! The "stars" are usually feet up. It is now very nice to see a big entry of very young riders in our centre events. They are really keen, mostly on super quiet Osets or 80's, thanks must go to many of the Mums and Dads especially the Hanvey family and Nene Valley for encouraging them, keep it up. There are several "older experts" who have offspring riding and improving fast as well, future centre champs? To all riders in all disciplines, enjoy the Winter, speed merchants may be doing their bikes up, but I can recommend trials to keep your fitness going! All the best, Bob. Open Harvest Trial ď Ž By Richard Dowland

Bathed in glorious late summer sunshine, the small hard working group of Wickham club members ran their regular yearly Harvest Trial at Whitepost Farm near Cowden. Like other trials the Harvest in days gone by used to be a road based event which ran in a loop round through Sandfields Farm and onto Forest Row and back. Indeed current club members Andy and Kevin Ely's father was involved in running this trial many years ago. Today the trial has no roadwork involved and is contained on one plot but what a cracking bit of land it is, with a mixture of tall climbs and descents, streams and even some rocks and gullies to give a nice variety of "going". This year the club had introduced a yellow Sportsmen's route to try and encourage less experienced riders and tried to make the red Novice route less demanding than in previous years. The trial was a round of the South East Centre Trials Championship though, so it had to be a bit of a challenge. Despite an early tumble which required some hasty repair work to the front brake of his GasGas, Tom Moss did well to lose just 30 marks on the Elite route. His final lap would have been clean but for a maximum on section three, a long, uphill, rocky gully which wouldn't look out of place ‘up North'. Usually riding

the Elite route Simon Bird rode the Expert route as he is still mindful of a painful shoulder injury and was a clear winner losing just 9 in total. There was a tight tussle for runner up spot however between on form GasGas rider Matt Godden and Nick Dowland on a 4Rt Montesa. Both had laps of 8, 6 and 3 to tie on 17 but Matt got the nod by way of most cleans. Two old campaigners Michael Stiles (23) and Mike Marshall (34) took the top two spots on the intermediate route and on the same route Martin Stevens lost 17 in the over 40's class. Novice winner Ian Wakeford's 12 marks lost was comfortably ahead of runner up Ashford's Jack Taylor on the red route but is was close for the over 50's novices as Kevin Miller pipped John Bird by a dab 11 marks to 12. Some great riding in the intermediate Youth category saw national runner Sarah Bell take her Beta to a fine win, losing 35 which would have been good enough for third in the adults. A close battle for second between Mason Meadows and Daniel Dabreo was settled on the very last section of the day where Daniel got a maximum and Mason rode clean leaving the scores 47 to 50 in Mason's favour. So that was the Harvest trial done and dusted for another year, a great day with lots of happy faces at the end. If you

are a trials rider of any ability why not mark next year's date for the Harvest I your diary and ride a great traditional trial on a unique, natural piece of trialling ground. Elite Tom Moss Jack Stiles Expert Simon Bird Matt Godden Nick Dowland Tom Sawyer

Kent Kings Speedway Season Review

ď Ž By Neil Emmott

Kent Speedway's season was a real mixed bag of some low and some real high points. It all got underway in April with an away defeat at Plymouth, but that was soon followed up with a home win in convincing style over one of the league tips for success Belle Vue. The Thurruck Hammers were the next side to visit central park and the meeting was a close run thing ending with Kent losing by a single point. The season got under way in earnest with the start of the National Trophy campaign which resulted in Kent winning their first silverware on Monday June 3 2019, a historic date to be etched in the history of the Kent Club. Next up in the busy season for the Kings was the National League Fours. Kent were drawn in the second group along with Belle Vue, Plymouth and Mildenhall. Kent got through this semi-final stage to be faced with Mildenhall, Stoke and Isle of Wight in the final. That didn't go to plan and Kent were last after losing Captain Rob Ledwith to injury that would see him out for a number of weeks. Attention then turned to the National League campaign and the Kings kept plugging away in picking up some valuable away wins. With more injury woes hitting the team, Manager Chris Hunt was forced to bring in some fresh legs, Jacob Clouting came in to

cover for Alex Spooner while Jake Mulford was drafted in as cover for Nathan Ablitt who had decided to give the rest of the 2019 season a miss. Also Jordan Jenkins had decided to take a break from the sport for an short period of time. Then the Kent Kings' season started to take a turn for the better, Drew Kemp was crowned the Under 19 British Speedway Champion in August, and at the end of the same month Kemp and Anders Rowe lifted the National League Pairs title. This was the second time a Kent Speedway pairing had won the title after Ben Morley and Danny Ayres had lifted it a couple of years before. September saw the welcome return of Spooner and Jenkins but the British Summer started to play havoc with the fixtures with many a rain off hitting the programme. September also saw the running of the annual Laurels Championship, the Laurels was first staged in 1939 with every winner since then lifting the coveted WJ Cearns Shield. Luke Bowen lifted the shield in its 80th year in an eventful evening at Central Park. This win was made more surprising as Bowen had retired at the end of 2018 following injury and only rode a handful of meetings in 2019 before lifting the title. The weather continued to play havoc but the Kings qualified for the National League Play-off finals where

they would come up against Belle Vue in the semi-final. The Kings went down 47-43 in the opening away leg but overturned the Aces at home in the return leg by 53-36 (96-83 on aggregate) meaning the Kings awaited to learn of the Final opponents. Leicester who finished top of the league were to be Kent's opponents in the final, one which was again hit by more than one rain-off. Eventually the opening leg was staged at Leicester on October 16 and the Kings were heavily defeated by the league favourite by 59-31. There was a brief intermission in league racing for the staging of the National League Riders Championship and Kent's Anders Rowe took full advantage of it by lifting the crown with Drew Kemp second, a very successful evening again for the Kent duo. The second leg of the Play-Off final was scheduled for Monday October 21, but again rain in the Garden of England put paid to that. So as TSM went to press the second and final leg was rescheduled for the week beginning October 28 with Kent having the highest of mountains to climb to overturn the 28 point deficit. Nothing is impossible in motorcycle sport as you all well know, and everyone will be hoping that the sun shines on the Kings when the second leg, and final meeting of the 2019 season finally gets underway. The result will be reported next month.

Ted Hubbard (1949 - 2019)

Kent Speedway is sad to hear the news of the passing of Kentish Speedway racing legend, Ted Hubbard on Saturday 19th. October aged 70 years after a courageous fight against liver cancer. Ted was a Man Of Kent, born in Lydden and made his racing debut in second halves at local track at Kingsmead in Canterbury in 1969, going on to star for the local side the Crusaders for whom he rode between 1970 and 1974. Known as 'Hurricane' Hubbard, Ted rose up to being number one for Canterbury and on his Division Two (later National League)

Riders' Championship debut at the famous Wimbledon track in '74 he finished runner up. He was to make the rostrum in the NLRC on two further occasions in '76 and '79. By this time he was a Rye House Rocket having left Canterbury in 1975 to ride under Len Silver for the Hackney Hawks in the top division British League and moved onto Len's NL side in Hoddesdon also, from '76. In 1980 Ted returned to his roots at Canterbury before one last hurrah back at Hackney and then retiring to run a successful wholesale potato farming business back in his native

Kent. Ted later served as Team Manager for the Iwade-based Sittingbourne Crusaders. He remained a regular at Speedway and Grasstrack in the county and was here (along with many other Kentish legends) at our opening meeting in 2013 where he watched proudly as his grandson Kai led the parade as meeting mascot. We send our condolences to his widow, Jeannette, surviving children; Jason and Nicola; grandchildren; Hanna, Jay, Kai and Hari and great-grandchild, Oscar and to the rest of the family and his many friends in and out of the sport. 9

Hot on his heels in the expert class was Berko raider Lennie Tidd 250 Beta waiting for his chance if McBain lapsed his concentration but not this time and had to settle for runner-up spot on three. Best Intermediate on the 50/50 route was Marcus Haynes over from the Milton Buzzard club three was his total half a dozen ahead of Ixion member Lee Sullivan. A crowd had gathered in the bottom field as word had got around there could be a stopper section to witness at number four. Lee was thrown off line here

Dean Devereux ď Ž By Ken O'Brien Photos by Gary Dowzall slider.photography Will McBain 300 Gasser put in a near perfect performance to retain the Expert class win and premiere award 'The James Challenge Trophy' with a loss of one. Folly Farm Common Wood Beckley was the venue where 4 four laps of ten testing 10

sections were ridden we had steep climbs cambered roots a graded hill muddy slots and sweeping sandy banks with the odd South Midland Rock thrown in for good measure. This event was an OTC event and included a round of the Meteor Group

Alex Ross

on his first visit by a lurking stump out of sight on the ditch crossing and done well to hold it for anything less than a five hopping himself out of trouble. Back to winning ways on one mark lost Clubman Alan Taylor took a necessary dab also at section 4 but that was it for a near faultless ride. In the Twinshock class on the middle route Bultaco 350 pilot Dean Devereux had a great ride for a loss of 4 with an annoying three at his last section of the day number 10. This wasn't as easy as it looked after a hundred or so bikes had gone though the marshy going was getting dragged further up the bank as more and more spin was required to reach the ends. Wycombe member Jim Morris pipped Tim Roblett on the most clean tie-break with fourteen marks apiece in the Novice contest which gets his name on the Thistle Anderson Cup for 2019. The easier white course attracted a good entry with British Twinshock and Modern machinery there was also a 50/50 easy-middle route for championship purposes. 50/50 rider Paul Meader 325 Bultaco lost seven with Alex Ross posting the Best pre 65 on nine marks. Alex had the big Royal Enfield on full-chat up the Graded Hill and could be heard echoing through the woods from afar clean as a whistle every attempt. Gordon Pusey 290 Beta has been making a habit of winning lately and once again topped the leader board with a final card of two.

Gordon took his eye off the ball for a split second at section 6 first lap but held it well over a steep lattice of roots for one of his dabs. Best Pre 65 on the eased course was Nick James 250 DOT. Nick was certainly ' Devoid of Trouble ' losing a miserly three a dab at 9 and a couple at sub 10 late on. David Clarkson 186 Bantam was on his case only a mark

adrift but had to settle for second place points today. The next Oxford Ixion trial will be at Folly Farm, Beckley on December 29th, a round of the 2020 trials championship. James Cup Will McBain

Goodwin Gears Up for the Southern Experts Sidecars ď Ž By Mick Auger and Richard Thomas

On November 17th Normandy MCC are holding their annual Goodwin Shield Trial aimed at pre-65 and twinshock machines (but modern bikes are welcome in the support classes) as well as pre-67 and modern sidecars. The event will take place at the popular Hookwood Trials Centre in West Horsley, Surrey and this year the trial incorporates the Sunbeam Southern Experts Sidecar event as well. The Goodwin Shield was first run in 1970 and was won by H (Harry) Rayner. The event has mostly been held on MOD land with the occasional use of private land when no MOD land was available. From 2003 to 2006 the event was run on Forestry Land at Boundless Copse, Hindhead, no longer

there now as this is the A3 Hindhead tunnel! Since then various venues have been used, the Old Quarry Betchworth, MOD Land at Bagshot and Deepcut and then once at Butser, though not too popular with the older bike riders!. Solo Winners through the years have been Simon Tyler, Chris Koch, the late Len Hutty, Colin Mote on three occasions, Andy Healy, Andy Bamford and Tony Talbot to name but a few. In the sidecar classes the Godalming pairing of Paul Fishlock / Debbie Merrell won the Pre 67 Class for three years in 2009/2011 and 2012 and Roger Abbott / Colin Keane won in 2014/15 with Peter Pesterfield / Sara Carter winning in 2013. In the Modern Class another triple win came from the Kent pairing of Rupert and Chris Kimber in 2011 / 12

/ 13, with Daryl Dale / Hannah Etherington (now Dale) winning in 2014 /15. This year 2019 will be the 78th Sunbeam Southern Experts Trial. (though not all have with Sidecars). The first event in 1931 was held somewhere near Farnham, the Solo event was won by Charlie Wake and the Sidecar by H.R. Taylor (possibly Harold Taylor of TT fame) who also won in 1934 in Petersfield, 1938 at Liphook and 1946 at Rake. In the more recent years 2013/14 and 15 were all won by South East pairing of Rupert and Chris Kimber, then in 2016 /17 it was the Bristol based pairing of brothers Josh / Luke Golding who came out on top, so watch this space to see who takes the Honors in 2019. All great bike history.

South Midland Classic Trial 2019  By Mick Clarkson Photos by Gary Dowzall slider.photography

Paul Meader

The South Midland Classic Trial at Colliers End Herts attracted a record entry of over 100 riders. The three lap five mile course which included fifteen sections per lap was deliberately set out on the cautious side due to the predicted heavy rain, however the rain did not come until the end of the event so as a consequence the scores were low which meant that the Special Test was needed to separate the rider’s positions. The only clean sheet on the British Bike Hard Route was Kevin Hood who just pipped Chris Collins, Nick Baker, Thomas

Kevin Hood 16

Bartrum & Clive Dopson who all had a single dab. Nick Baker riding his father’s Triumph Cub took the Jackie Rees Trophy for the best ride on a Triumph. Richard Allen took the overall win on the day & came out on top in the Special Test with the fastest time riding in the Twinshock Hard Route Class just taking the win from Dean

Jack Thompson Classic Bikes Trial

 By Alan Clarke

The event will take place at the usual venue at Canada Heights and for this year we have increased the entry and will take a total of 140 entries. With day light at a premium at this time of year, the event will get underway at 9.30am and a split start will be employed to get all competitors on the course in the shortest possible time. This event is a round of the Central England Trials Championship for Sidecars and it is hoped this will attract some additional entries. The Course will consist of 2 laps of 20 sections, providing a suitably competitive and enjoyable challenge for all classes with no roadwork. Section marking will be White route-hard, Red route "Easy", Yellow route-Gentleman and sidecars. I have looked long and hard at the classes and would like to encourage entries from the following please. • Pre-unit construction fourstrokes (sprung) • Unit construction fourstrokes (sprung)

• Rigid framed machines with fourstroke engines and having girder forks • Rigid framed machines with fourstoke engines and having telescopic forks • Any British two stroke, with spring frame and forks • Any British two stroke with a rigid frame, forks optional. • Any Eligible Sidecar, sprung or unsprung. • Gentleman/Ladies, riding one of the above detailed bikes but on the easiest route. Awards As per previous including the minimum of six for sidecars and no awards for the H class. Route: Following the comments last year about the difficulty in seeing the marker cards, this year brighter colours will be used. The intention is for the white route to be testing but not unsafe, Red route to be easy and the yellow route to be suitable and wide enough for older men riding sidecars. 21

A Flying Finale

James Hartley/Shane Minihane have the edge over Shaun Hughes/Louis Bennett ď Ž By Alan Turner Frittenden & DMCC held the Frittenden Flyer, its third and final meeting of the season, at the familiar Sandhurst Bridge Farm venue. The high reputation of the track draws riders from a wide area and ensures a good entry for all classes. For those checking the previous night's weather forecast it seemed jet-skis might have been more appropriate. However, heavy rain had moved away and the sloping track, a steady breeze and welcome sun dried things out through the day. At the interval, the track was rolled, keeping riders very much on their toes. Conditions were decidedly sticky in practice with several tumbles, but no harm done. Racing started at 12-30 sharp. In capacity order, the 250s were the property of Jake Mulford, with three heat wins and the all-important final. On a round robin basis, Tim Greig took the fourth heat, the one Jake did not contest. The Frittenden track seems to be equally suitable for both the two- and four-stroke quarter-litre bikes, although Jawa-mounted Mulford's outside line approach seemed to involve fighting his steed on more than one occasion. Tim Greig and Russell Little took the other podium places. The 350s got off to a bad start. First race, first lap saw Mark Giles come to grief on Turn 2 and left Mike Peters and Paul Whitelam Jr nowhere to go and all three were out of the meeting. When racing resumed, Ricky Sandford looked well in control as he made a clean sweep of heats and final. Jody Hodgson followed him home twice, as did Martin Adams. Thus, 26

the trio booked their podium appearances. Upright Solos are a regular feature at Frittenden and each leg needed two heats to give everyone a ride. This year, Rodney McDonald's taking up the class has seen him constantly improving, and on this occasion he put up a real challenge to Upright veteran Bob Dolman. They met twice in the heats, resulting in a victory each, both won their two remaining heats. Tim Curnock also had two wins resulting in a three-way points tie for the final! Not for the first time Bob Dolman saved his best until last. Leading away from the tapes and, try as he might, Rodney McDonald could not find a way past. Tim Curnock was third, just getting the better of a race-long battle with Chris Mackett. One dramatic heat of the 500s saw Arron Butcher displace Martyn Sturgeon just on the line. With the last of the heats, James Wright, Martyn Sturgeon and Charley Powell had all notched one first place each. Previous Frittenden favourite Georgie Wood was beset by a succession of machine problems. However, the day belonged to Paul Hurry. Three clear heat wins and late away from the tapes in the final, but a spectacular wide line saw him leading by the next lap as he also set fastest race time of the day. The 500 Sidecar Final was the best race of the day. Class newcomers Will Penfold and Ricky Pay were on Mitch Godden's spare outfit for the heats. When Mitch's number one outfit hit problems, both crews were sharing the spare – and both ended up qualifying for the final! Charley Powell was also trying the Continental chairs, with Josh Russell doing double duty

John Hiscock and Terry Madley bowed out of grass track after 50 years.

Rodney McDonald had the edge on Bob Dolman for Upright honours as he was still partnered with regular driver Dan Berwick in the right-hand sidecars. The sensation of the meeting was James Hartley, a very capable solo rider, but now on three wheels with Shane Minihane in the chair. Shaun Hughes/Louis Bennett took two heat wins. Next time, they had swapped heat appearances to allow Mitch and Will to have a chance each on the same outfit. Will and Tony Dart were having a terrific scrap for second, until Hughes, leading again, rolled the outfit! By the time of the final, both Mitch's outfits were ready for the fray. However, it turned into a terrific scrap as Mitch missed the start and could not find a way past. James Hartley had the advantage, Shaun Hughes and Will Penfold were disputing second. On the final turn, it was three abreast for second spot! James Hartley was a very happy winner with Shaun Hughes runner up followed by Will Penfold. Natasha Bartlett and Ciara Southgate were back as a crew once more, but a third and two fourths was not enough to see them advance to the final. The left-handers served up a fair mix. Tommy Penfold and William Naden started off with a win, but their next two outings netted just a brace of thirds! Alex Balman/Mark Hopkins also had a win, but Rob Heath/Kyle Fish and Tony Penfold/ Joe Penfold both took two victories. However, an intense four laps saw Tommy Penfold pull it all together when it counted and he took the Final, with Heath/Fish second and Balman/Hopkins third. Channel Islander Clint Blondel with Jordan Smith in the chair served up a superb last to

first ride in the opening heat of right-handers. Score charts in the next race would not be remarkable showing 'Cossar' leading. But this was Tom Cossar! It was the second lap before Mark got by and brother Tom was hardly out of touch as the outfits flashed across the finish line with Rob Wilson/Terry Saunters a way back. The third leg also produced a Mark Cossar thriller with Paul Whitelam/Alan Elliott and Mick Stace/ Ryan Knowles three abreast at one point. With three heats for each leg, Mark Cossar won three, Paul Whitelam one, Tom Cossar two and Tony Sales/Lewis Davies establishing themselves as a crew to watch with two heat victories. The final was yet another Mark Cossar highspeed demonstration, but this time it was the Whitelam/Elliott crew keeping Tom Cossar at bay with Sales/Davies far from out of touch. During the afternoon, John Hiscock/Terry Madley made a lap of honour as it was their final grass track appearance after no less than 50 years in the sport. Sadly, they did not make the final on this occasion. Paul Hurry was challenged on the retirement rumours but revealed he has a leg operation later in the year that may – or may not! - make the decision for him. Alan Elliott said this was his last time out on Paul Whitelam's outfit. But Alan has said that before! A fine Frittenden finale, as a 5pm prizegiving closed a slick 48-race programme. Just a pity about the weather, or at least the forecast, which was presumably the reason that kept spectator numbers lower than the usual trackside crowds.

A family affair? Tom Cossar/Wayne Rickards on the inside of Mark Cossar and Carl Blyth

A Fraught Finale - SE Centre Grass Track Championships 13th October ď Ž By Alan Turner Details of early meetings are scant, but the South Eastern Centre Grass Track Championships were established well before the war. Later, Alf Hagon, Reg Luckhurst, Martin Tatum and Don Godden are among some of the legends that have won the award. More recent years have added Mitch Godden, Dave Mears, Paul Hurry and other luminaries to this long list. This year, Maidstone Aces stepped up to the plate to run the event, as they have done several times before. After a brief tenure of the legendary Collier Street boarded track ended, club members have invested a lot of time and effort in developing a circuit at Grafty Green. Early efforts received a mixed reception but this seemed to have been overcome with a successful Kent Kracker meeting this summer. Trying to build on that, the club offered to hold the Centre Championships, but date clashes dictated this could not be until October, perhaps fittingly bringing down the curtain on Centre grass track . End of the season, granted, but sadly all the efforts from club members did not seem to be matched by a similar response from riders. The meeting ended up with enough entries to support seven different classes – just. If that wasn't enough of a problem, the weather was certainly not helping, with October setting some sort of record for rainfall. Nothing ventured, nothing gained and so 30

the meeting went ahead. Sadly, the line-up was further depleted with non-starters. Practice saw identifiable Kevlars disappear beneath an equally colourful variety of wetweather gear as mud and grass flew and tear-offs vanished. Challenging? Certainly. Rideable? Definitely! Raceable? We would soon find out. First out were the 250s. Jake Mulford continued where he had left off at Frittenden last week by taking the first heat with Karl Bedingfield getting the better of Tim Greig for second. Next up, the 350s, and Ricky Sandford was also in the groove as he headed home Mark Giles looking decidedly unhappy in the conditions. The 500s saw rapidfire starts from Paul Hurry and Steve Green, but a lap or so later, Steve was dodging the mud from Paul's back wheel. Further back, Arran Butcher

Brian Cornelius rode his Upright 350 in both Upright and open 350 classes

Bob Dolman, two races – two wins in the Uprights took third. Solo action was rounded out with the Uprights, where Bob Dolman, a late entry, had Robin Pilcher as his closest challenger. Three-wheeled action began with the Continental chairs and a brilliant scrap between Tony Dart/Wayne Powell and more recent sidecar convert Charley Powell with Sam Heath in the chair. They pulled clear of Chris Neame/Lee Russell. First of the left-handers produced an even better battle. This time the protagonists were Rob Heath/Kyle Fish and Tommy Penfold/William Naden. Next heat was a more straightforward victory for M. Phillips/G. Davies. Attrition in the right-handers meant they required only one heat per leg. Tony Sales/Lewis Davies made it to the first corner leaving Clint Blondel/ Richard Webb to try and find a way through a spectacular plume of mud and grass. Clerk of the Course Graham Hurry was monitoring track conditions closely, concerned at how the track was cutting up. The 500s had already seen James Wells transferred to hospital following a fall. The second leg began and Jake Mulford was again out front of the 250s, but dropped it later in the race. He scrambled back on to the bike again for a third place finish as Tim Greig and Karl Bedingfield passed the chequered. This time, Steve Tideswell was runner-up in the 350s. Mark Giles had withdrawn leaving Ricky Sandford an easy win. At this point, Graham Hurry decided to cut races to three laps to try and preserve the track as long as possible. Paul Hurry romped

away with the 500s, leaving Steve Green then Arran Butcher to follow him home once more. Bob Dolman did not make it out for the next Upright heat, so Max Pankhurst got the clear view with Robin Pilcher runner-up again and Derrick Keyes grateful for third place. The 500 sidecars saw Charley Powell turn the tables this time to head Tony Dart. Rob Heath took a left-hander win over Josh Penfold/ Dan Woodbridge. Tommy Penfold/William Naden got the other heat over Jay Sullivan/ Steve Bickley. The right-handers were just about a reprise of the first round as the Blondel/ Webb team just could not catch Sales/Davies. The area around the start and the final bends was giving cause for concern. With Leg 2 concluded, the Clerk of the Course's decision was that the third leg would be abandoned. Next races would be the sequence of finals. This took some organising as the limited track outings meant there were several points ties, so these had to be resolved for the choice of gate position. In the conditions, a good start was vital. Race distance remained at three laps. The 250s saw Jake Mulford finding enough grip to keep Tim Greig and Karl Bedingfield comfortably behind him. The 350 Final was another Ricky Sandford showcase. The 500s saw Paul Hurry try some spectacular outside lines apparently looking for smoother ground. Steve Green and Arran Butcher followed him home. Bob Dolman was out again for the Upright final. He led the race, with a battle for second behind, Continued overleaf

Charley Powell/Sam Heath (92) 31

Jake Mulford (Jawa) has already got a lead over Tim Greig (Husqvarna) Robin Pilcher looked to have done enough, but as they slithered out of the final turn Max Pankhurst slipped by right on the line. The 500 Sidecars saw Tony Dart with the upper hand this time, Charley Powell was as close as close gets, but just could not get past. A complicated left hand sidecar points tie ended up with Josh Penfold/Dan Woodbridge winning the B Final and taking the last gasp place in the A Final. This produced a three-way classic with Josh and Tommy Penfold and Rob Heath trying every which way for an advantage. Tommy Penfold got it, Josh next and then Rob Heath. First two places in right-handers were as before, but Paul and Steve Standing were highly pleased to take third. It left only the Allcomers race, for the overall South Eastern Centre Championship. Entry was by invitation to the first three in all four solo classes. As a handicap race, it was to be over four laps. A somewhat ragged start saw Paul

Hurry flying into the lead, but it was shortlived. The bike lifted on the pits turn and just briefly it looked as if he might have it under control before he was pitched off the side of the machine. The race was red-flagged, the unfortunate Paul taken to hospital for a check over. It also marked the end of the meeting. Thus, the capacity classes were raced to a conclusion. The Championships could, indeed should, be up there again with riders keen to see their names join that illustrious company, usually decided with an Allcomers competition, where all solo riders had a chance. Maidstone Aces needs support in putting on meetings

The Upright battle between Robin Pilcher (GM, 174) and Max Pankhurst (GM, 28) as well as riders to compete. The SouthEastern Centre used to offer the country's most competitive grass tracks, Grafty Green is a chance to turn back the clock. For the sake of grass track in the centre, we can only hope the Aces can remain optimistic for 2020. June Hurry collects son Paul's trophies – but what had Steve Green said to her?

Paul Hurry has a clear field of vision

Trials report - Bultaco 350 ď Ž By Nick James

Many may not know that the origin of Bultaco machines owed its origin to a disagreement at the Montesa factory between the management and one of their employees, Francisco Xavier Bulto. Montesa wanted to withdraw from motorcycle cle sport, but Bulto advised against it. He was convinced that involvement in the sport was healthy for a progressive firm. Unfortunately sixteen other employees also left Montesa when he resigned to take up positions at Bultaco. It was a bold decision by Bulto to take as he was in his late 40's at the time. Montesa kept going however and both firms produced good motocross, trials and enduro machines for many years. The current success of the revival of the twinshock class in modern trials is no doubt in part due to the involvement of both factories. SWM, Gori, Yamaha, Beta, OSSA and other twinshock makers from the past can be seen every weekend and the highly successful KIA series has profited from the inclusion of the class. A 340 Bultaco is still a much sought after bike, the last of the great marque to be produced, there are not many about! Most of the success of the Bultaco in the UK must of course be attributed to Sammy Miller, who along with road racing brought the first four speed Bulto' to us in the sixties, his dedication along with the factory help ensured the development and success of the Spanish machine. Twinshock riders "dig out" those bikes and compete, the Meteor group in the South Midland Centre and those in the South Eastern centre championships and the Star group have a series for you, go for it, let's get the twinshocks to prosper! 36

Report submitted by Nick James from an article by him "some years ago"! Quite literally the Bultaco needs no introduction, even a diehard road racing fan knows that the name is synonymous with success in the trials field. Indeed, this factory spearheaded the Spanish "invasion" of the British trials scene, and has remained as the most popular trials iron ever since. In short, it is the yardstick by which most other machines are judged. The new Sherpa T350 is in fact a 326cc single cylinder two stroke. So what? You say, the way it performs makes no difference, but why not call it a 326cc? And it does perform well. From cold, just turn the petrol on, push down the choke lever on the Bing carburettor, no throttle is needed, and give a maximum of three kicks to the kick starter. When warm a single prod is all that is required, the power is there whenever it is needed. Turn the throttle gently and the power comes in with a smoothness and reliability that is very reassuring even at the most

difficult of moments. It will scream up a hill in second or you can make it pull in third, either way the motor will not complain. It just depends on the way you want to ride it. The gear change is on the left side, and gives a good positive change, if you should need to change whilst in a section it is not difficult to do, you won't "miss a gear". The gear lever does stick out a bit though and could be damaged by the odd passing rock or tree stump, there is a conversion to put the lever on the right hand side if that is your desire! The right hand side has more protection thanks to the cases that side. The clutch has a nice smooth feel to it and if you do "clutch a lot", then it is not too fierce. The silver paintwork on the frame and the matt black on the engine is very thin and soon starts to come off and rust, which if left unchecked can make the bike look second hand very quickly. All of the aluminium parts which have not been painted have a very good highly polished finish and after washing and drying they come up clean and sparkling. The welding on the frame is not of the same class, and though no doubt strong enough in appearance it resembles bird droppings! Problems? Virtually none, even after having ridden the machine in over eight trials in as many weekends. I was told when I bought the bike that I might have problems with the petrol tank pouring what looks like mini cornflakes into the carb; and filters, but I have had no trouble at all. However as a precaution I did clean out the whole of the petrol system immediately I bought the bike. I have not had to touch the carb; since, except to adjust the slow running and mixture after about fifty miles. A mod to the greasing of the swinging arm bushes is to fit right angled nipples so that you can reach them easily. Also the speedo needed moving to the centre of the handlebars to prevent it being damaged. I cut about one quarter of and inch off the steering stops so that it doesn't quite hit the tank to get more steering lock. As for riding the bike, I should perhaps point out that I am not a factory retained super star, but a very average club rider who has been riding trials for two years and was qualified as being of expert status some six

months ago. In short the sort of person who digs his hand into his pocket (or his bank managers pocket) and buys such machines. I was very apprehensive and careful of the power delivery as it has a reputation of being quite lively and too powerful for a novice. However, I soon became used to it and I found myself being taken up what I had earlier thought were impossible climbs, wet or dry. The more I rode it the more I learned to use its flexible power and handling ability, and consequently the more "cleans" I get! It really is an incredibly good bike, quite capable of doing most of the work for you. The brakes work incredibly well even after being in and out of water during a trial. What else can I say about the Bultaco? You just point it, and if you can ride it the "Bull" will take you there! Ed's comments: The Bultaco I owned was a 1965 four speeder, a lovely bike, I believe it was tuned by the late Terry Busch. The first five speeders appeared in the late sixties and the first was a bit of a "fire breather", too powerful for many. The later "slimline" models were better, the 250 would still rev and fly up a hill. Many riders preferred the 250 to the 325, the bigger engine had a more "grunty" feel of power. When the later models were introduced they changed a lot, they would pull you up anything (if you could hang on)! The later blue models almost took over the class apart from the Montesa, which I thought steered better (if you could find a gear )! It was a pity that the Bultaco's floundered, they were good bikes once you had got the brakes sorted, of course Honda taking over the Montesa brand saved them. There are still a few around in the South Midland centre and Dean Devereux has just won the "Historic Spanish" title in the KIA series on a blue one. Nick is a very experienced rider no matter what he says. I had to laugh at the comments on the brakes, as most riders know the brakes had chrome on alloy hubs and after a while it peeled off, which was not very nice. Also when you started the bike you had to move the handlebars to the right to avoid taking your kneecap off when it "kicked back"! I realise that his comments are from a few years back though, many thanks and keep riding your DOT!

From the Sunny Side of the Solent The close season for track racing is almost with us, it has been something of a difficult time with lots of rain causing call-offs and postponements. The Warriors season on the Isle of Wight finished some time ago, and as has been reported qualification for the Play Offs was almost achieved. Overall it has been a very good season, so the Promotion and we as fans can hardly wait to get Winter over with and get on with next Season. The next function will be the end of Season Party, at the Clubhouse on Saturday 9th November, from 7pm. Tickets are priced at £5, see website for details, 7pm till late. In the world of real motorcycling, the Two Stroke Club had their penultimate Run of the Season from Wisborough Green to QE Park at Horndean. Some 20 or so mainly two strokes took part, over a 40 mile ride, the whole proceeding being enlivenedby the condition of the lanes, being very wet and often slippery after heavy overnght rain. The Run itself though was conducted in ideal Autumn weather conditions, with warm bright sunshine throughout.

Irish Road Racing Dates for 2020 (including the Isle of Man) are currently being put together, but final confirmation from the Northern Ireland and Irish Governments is currently awaited. The only confirmed date so far as I know at present is for the North West 200, which will take place between 10 and 15 May. Otherwise, the list of provisional dates is as follows: • Cookstown 100 • Tandagree 100 • Kells • Enisklillen Road Races • Skerries 100 • Walderstown Road Races • Faugheen 50 Road Races • Armoy Road Races • Ulster GP • Killalane Road Races/East Coast Revival • Isle of Man dates are being dealt with separately. Eurosport extend 2 wheel race coverage in 2019 Eurosport has recently announced a new addition to its motorsport portfolio after signing a 5 year deal with the British Speedway Promoters

 By John Bramall Association to screen British Speedway live in the UK. Starting in 2020, Eurosport will broadcast live coverage from 18 Rounds across the SGB Premiership League season. Highlights from every Round will also be available free-to-air on Channels Quest, and DMAX is covering UK Channel network. Viewers will also be able to stream all the action on demand via Eurosport Player. Overall Eurosport will be strengthening Eurosport's 2- wheel racing programme by joining together British Superbikes, FIM Superbike World Championship, E-Championships, as well as the 24 hours Le Mans car racing, and now too British Speedway. Looks to me to be a pretty comprehensive selection of motorcycle sport, possibly too good to miss, although as I write cost has not been announced, and there is also the all important question of technical and maintenance backup. BT are not mentioned in the Press release, I don't know if BT coverage is now a thing of the past?
