FERC removes obstacles to natural gas projects
By THE STAR STAFF

t a time when Puerto Rico wants to increase natural gas projects, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) has announced several actions to remove regulatory obstacles to speed up the construction of natural gas infrastructure projects.
The FERC said its actions on Tuesday put into place an immediate waiver of FERC’s Order No. 871 and establish a process for permanent repeal to avoid delaying natural gas infrastructure projects that the FERC has found are needed.
The FERC also acted to temporarily raise the cost limits under which natural gas companies are allowed to undertake pipeline modifications or construction without the need for further case-by-case certificate authorization by the commission. The change will give natural gas companies increased flexibility and lessen regulatory burdens for certain activities related to their natural gas facilities.
“New and expanded natural gas infrastructure is essential to help America avoid a grid reliability crisis,” FERC Chairman Mark Christie said. “As the demand for electrical power continues to grow, getting more natural gas generation built is critically important and that means we must get natural gas infrastructure to supply that generation built more quickly as well, so that we can provide consumers with reliable power.”
The news comes at a time when island Energy Czar Josué Colón Ortiz has expressed the need for the construction of a gas pipeline to transport natural gas. The Puerto Rico Energy Bureau is evaluating modifications to power plants, such as Cambalache, so that they can use natural gas.
Some of the specific actions taken by the FERC include an order granting a two-year temporary waiver to increase blanket certificate cost limitations to expand certain activities that a natural gas company may undertake without the need to obtain a case-specific certificate, and a notice of inquiry seeking comment on permanently adjusting the blanket certificate cost limitations.
The actions also include an order granting a oneyear waiver of the FERC rule that precludes the issuance of authorizations to proceed with construction activities for natural gas facilities while certain requests for rehearing are pending before the commission, and a notice of proposed rulemaking proposing to remove the rule from FERC regulations.
Energy equipment supplier receives order for gas turbines in PR
Separately, energy equipment manufacturing and services company GE Vernova announced this week that it has secured an order for six of its LM2500XPRESS aeroderivative gas turbine packages from the Puerto Rican Equipment Procurement and Construction company RG Engineering (RGE) to help bring fast and reliable power in Puerto Rico. The six units are expected to modernize the

Puerto Rico’s energy challenges stem from natural disasters with hurricanes Maria in 2017 and Fiona in 2022, which significantly weakened the island’s power grid. The six new gas turbine units are estimated to provide some 244 megawatts (MW) in total with the goal of ensuring a more robust energy system for the island, support possible peak summer demand and provide emergency power.
In addition, flexible and highly efficient natural gas-fired plants can help Puerto Rico increase its energy security while continuing to expand its development of renewable energy resources, including solar and wind, proponents of natural gas point out. Under the 2019 Puerto Rico Energy Public Policy Act, the island set an ambition to obtain 60% of its electricity supply from renewable resources by 2040, and 100% by 2050 (EIA).
“These plants are being equipped with new, more efficient generation units, as part of a larger project to replace older, less efficient equipment,” said Winnie Irizarry, president & CEO at Genera PR. “This renewal is part of a larger initiative to modernize Puerto Rico’s power grid, focusing on improving generation capacity and reliability to ultimately strengthen electrical availability during high demand peaks and improve the quality of life for the Puerto Rican people. With GE Vernova’s aeroderivative solutions, we can feed in electricity quickly and flexibly at the request of the transmission grid operator and thus help to stabilize the grid on the island.”
Resident commissioner urges US House to maintain rum cover-over provision after Senate approval
By THE STAR STAFF
Resident Commissioner Pablo José Hernández Rivera urged his colleagues in the U.S. House of Representatives on Tuesday to maintain the provision permanently restoring the increased rum cover-over rate for Puerto Rico, included by the Senate in H.R. 1.
“I have serious concerns about several aspects of H.R. 1; however, I appreciate that the Senate accepted the request we made -- along with Congresswoman [Stacey] Plaskett [D-U.S.V.I.] to include the provision that permanently restores the increased rum cover-over rate for Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands,” Hernández Rivera said in a written statement. “Since the beginning of my administration, I have prioritized this issue due to its direct economic impact on the island, and I will continue working with colleagues from both parties to advance
initiatives that benefit the people of Puerto Rico. I urge my colleagues in the House to maintain this language in the bill, as amended by the Senate.”
In early June, Hernández and Plaskett requested that the Senate leadership include this provision, which is now part of the Senate version of H.R. 1. The change is estimated to represent more than $110 million in additional funding to the more than $400 million already received annually by the Puerto Rico government.
The rum cover-over funds support areas such as economic development, disaster recovery and essential public services. They also strengthen the island’s rum industry and help retain manufacturing jobs.
The House of Representatives passed H.R. 1 on May 22. It must now consider the Senate’s amended version. If approved without changes, the bill will be sent to President Donald Trump for his signature.

House passes children’s sports protection bill
By THE STAR STAFF
District 20 (Cabo Rojo, San Germán and Hormigueros) Rep. Emilio Carlo Acosta on Tuesday lauded the island House of Representatives’ approval of House Bill (HB) 568, of his authorship, which seeks to enact the “Single Sports Calendar and the Regulation of Sporting Events of Puerto Rico Law.”
“Our spearhead, with this measure, is to protect the health, safety and integral development of our girls and boys,” the lawmaker said. “Our bill, of such importance for all of Puerto Rico, seeks to defend the physical, emotional and formative integrity of our girls and boys who practice various sports on the island.”
HB 568, Carlo Acosta noted, responds to the growing physical overexploitation and excessive commercialization of children’s sports in Puerto Rico.
“The above, sadly, has displaced such essential values as enjoyment, respect and teamwork,” he emphasized.
The New Progressive Party legislator said the measure “will represent a great management tool for the Department of Recreation and Sports, which will focus all official events where minors participate.
“The instrument will allow for coordinating and supervising each sports activity,” he said.
Meanwhile, each sports organization will be obliged to register its events in advance, and present security plans, among other requirements.
the public.
The funeral was coordinated in conjunction with Jarabo Álvarez’s widow, Madeline Rolón, and his children, José Luis and Ana María Jarabo. During the ceremony, an ecumenical ceremony will be led by Pastor Josué Carrillo Quiñones.
The first honor guard will be led by former House Speakers Zaida Cucusa Hernández Torres, Carlos Vizcarrondo Irizarry, José Aponte Hernández, Jaime Perelló Borrás and Gov. Jenniffer González Colón, who presided over the chamber from 2009 to 2012.
Additional honor guards will be led by current and former representatives. At the end of the ceremony, the coffin will be transferred to the San Juan Municipal Cemetery.

Rate review case hearing examiner criticizes PREPA’s delays
By THE STAR STAFF
The hearing examiner overseeing the rate review case of the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority (PREPA) gave the public power utility until July 7 to provide to LUMA Energy its revenue requirement, questioning whether PREPA can carry out its statutory functions.
Scott Hempling, the hearing examiner, said PREPA has known since December 2024 that there was going to be a rate case in 2025 to update all power rates. However, PREPA has been slow to provide the information, causing LUMA to miss deadlines to in turn provide required information in the case to the Puerto Rico Energy Bureau.
“My Order of June 20, 2025, required
PREPA to provide its proposed revenue requirement and accompanying testimony to LUMA by June 25, 2025,” Hempling said in a written statement. “That deadline was PREPA’s chosen deadline -- one whose obvious lateness, given LUMA’s July 3 deadline to submit the consolidated application, has already caused inconvenience to all.”
On June 23, PREPA filed an urgent motion seeking an extension to July 7.
“A party that ‘respectfully requests’ an extension after a deadline has passed is not respectfully requesting; it is demanding,” Hempling added.
PREPA, the hearing examiner said, talks of the pressures it faced in the past few weeks, “but PREPA tells us nothing about the past six months -- the months since December 2024
when it became clear that there would be a rate case in 2025.”
“PREPA’s behavior, and its excuse-making, reminds me of a Little League game 60 years ago. I was playing right field. The batted ball went over my head. I dashed back and made a circus catch. Everyone applauded,” Hempling said. “Next inning, as I prepared to bat, I said to my Dad -- who was sitting behind home plate -- ‘How’d you like that catch?’ He said, ‘You should have started earlier.’ PREPA should have started earlier. Everyone watching this situation -- this Hearing Examiner, the Energy Bureau’s consultants, the Commissioners, the bondholders, the customers, the public, FOMB [Financial Oversight and Management Board], the Legislature, the Governor, P3A [Public-Pri-

vate Partnership Authority], AAFAF [Puerto Rico Fiscal Agency and Financial Advisory Authority], everyone -- has to be wondering whether PREPA is capable of carrying out its statutory functions.”
Governor convenes meeting to fill mayor’s seat in Gurabo

By THE STAR STAFF
New Progressive Party (NPP) President Gov. Jenniffer González Colón will convene the party’s board of directors for a meeting on Thursday to discuss the vacancy for the mayor of Gurabo, which was left by Rosachely Rivera Santana, who is now Puerto Rico’s secretary of state.
The governor emphasized that the party must establish a new selection process, despite District 31 Rep. Vimarie Peña Dávila’s belief that she has the support to become mayor.
“I must follow due process, and the New Progressive Party guarantees that. Candidates here aren’t simply handpicked,” González
PRIDCO chief has resigned for personal reasons
By THE STAR STAFF
Eric Santiago Justiniano, the executive director of the Puerto Rico Industrial Development Company (PRIDCO), has resigned from his position to return to private law practice, Government Public Affairs Secretary Hiram Torres Montalvo said Tuesday. “Yes, that’s correct. He submitted his resignation for personal reasons, and I won’t provide further details,” Torres Montalvo said at a press conference at La Fortaleza. “He submitted his resignation at the end of June. While I don’t have all the specifics, it appears he had already handed in his resignation letter. In the meantime, PRIDCO’s deputy secretary, Carlos Ríos, is overseeing the agency, ensuring that all work panels and functions continue smoothly.”
When asked if any further resignations are expected from Gov. Jenniffer González Colón’s cabinet, Torres Montalvo replied, “We
don’t anticipate any additional resignations.”
“All of our secretaries and agency heads are effectively performing their duties,” he said.
The Senate confirmed Santiago Justiniano as the new executive director of PRIDCO in March.
Santiago Justiniano, who was president of the Puerto Rico Manufacturers Association until his appointment as head of PRIDCO in January, highlighted during the confirmation process his challenges and achievements since joining the agency.
“In these first 60 working days, we have received 56 offers or inquiries to establish operations in Puerto Rico,” Santiago Justiniano said. “Rentals, the income that PRIDCO plans to receive in the coming years, already have seen an increase of $2.6 million that will help us improve our finances so we can better serve the industry.”
Colón said. “Once I receive an official notification of a vacancy, the law and party regulations require that the board of directors be convened, a candidate evaluation committee approved, and a primary calendar established, as these legal requirements must be fulfilled. If there are no other candidates and she is the sole candidate, there is still a procedure to adhere to, but it must align with the process set by the party, which we will consider at that time. No one can announce candidacies until they are officially opened. In order to begin that process, the NPP must initiate it.”
Rivera Santana’s nomination for secretary of state received unanimous support in the House of Representatives.

EPA workers warn Trump is politicizing their work
By MAXINE JOSELOW
More than 270 employees of the Environmental Protection Agency signed a letter earlier this week denouncing what they described as the Trump administration’s efforts to politicize, dismantle and sideline the main federal agency tasked with protecting the environment and public health.
The letter to President Donald Trump’s EPA administrator, Lee Zeldin, was a remarkable rebuke of the agency’s political leadership. It followed a similar missive sent this month by more than 60 employees of the National Institutes of Health, who criticized orders they saw as illegal and unethical.
“EPA employees join in solidarity with employees across the federal government in opposing this administration’s policies, including those that undermine the EPA mission of protecting human health and the environment,” the EPA workers wrote.
Asked for comment, EPA spokesperson Carolyn Holran wrote in an email: “The Trump EPA will continue to work with states, tribes and communities to advance the agency’s core mission of protecting human health and the environment and Administrator Zeldin’s Powering the Great American Comeback Initiative, which includes providing clean air, land and water for EVERY American.”
The four-page document outlined five overarching concerns with the Trump administration’s approach to the EPA. The top complaint was that decisions had been made based on a political agenda, not on science and the law.
Recent EPA news releases and newsletters have parroted some of Trump’s rhetoric on the environment, the letter said. For example, these materials have praised coal as “beautiful” and “clean.” Coal is the dirtiest of the fossil fuels and is a significant source of greenhouse gases. Statements from the EPA have also routinely referred to climate grants issued under the Biden administration as a “green slush fund,” when there has been no evidence they were used for illicit purposes.
“I’ve never seen this kind of partisanship, even in the first Trump administration,” said Justin Chen, an environmental engineer in the EPA’s Dallas-based Region 6 office who signed the letter. Chen emphasized that he was speaking in his personal capacity and not on behalf of his EPA office.
In response to these allegations, Holran said the agency was “bound by laws established by Congress.”
The letter also criticized the proposed elimination of some EPA divisions. For instance, Trump officials are considering shuttering the agency’s scientific research arm and firing as many as 1,155 of its chemists, biologists, toxicologists and other scientists.
The EPA has already closed its environmental justice offices, which sought to help poor and minority communities that face disproportionate amounts of pollution. And since January, more than 1,400 EPA employees have decided to leave the agency through early retirement or deferred resignation programs.

In addition, the letter aired concerns about Zeldin’s plans to repeal dozens of the nation’s most significant environmental rules, including limits on pollution from cars and power plants, protections for wetlands, and the scientific finding that allows the EPA to regulate the greenhouse gases that are heating the planet.
The letter was organized by Stand Up for Science, a group that planned a March rally in Washington to protest the Trump administration’s steep cuts to federally funded scientific research. Of the 278 EPA employees who signed the letter, 173 signed their names, while 105 signed anonymously for fear of retaliation.
“In Trump’s America, it is a brave thing to speak out in this way,” said Colette Delawalla, the founder and executive director of Stand Up for Science and a graduate student in psychology at Emory University.
“We have EPA employees who are signing their full names, their offices, their regions, all of that,” Delawalla continued. “These are people who feel that this is so important that they’re willing to risk their careers to make sure that this information gets out to the public.”
Concerns about politicization at the EPA have been building in recent weeks. Last week, a union representing EPA staff members accused agency leaders of violating the Hatch Act, which prohibits federal employees from engaging in political activities while they are on the job.
According to the complaint from the union, the American Federation of Government Employees Local 704, a
weekly newsletter sent by Zeldin’s office violated the law by attacking Democratic lawmakers.
“Congressional Democrats are big mad because the Trump Administration is cutting off their gravy train,” said the newsletter’s May 30 edition.
An EPA spokesperson, Brigit Hirsch, said in an email that the director of the agency’s Ethics Office, Justina Fugh, had reviewed the newsletter and determined that it complied with the Hatch Act.
“Not surprised to see The New York Times getting caught up in another wild goose chase,” Hirsch said. “Each week, EPA solicits career employees’ input while putting together the newsletter. Administrator Zeldin will never apologize for defending taxpayer dollars and listening to the will of the American people.”

Surprise plea deal is reached in Idaho murder case

By MIKE BAKER and NICHOLAS BOGEL-BURROUGHS
Bryan Kohberger, the man charged in the brutal stabbing deaths of four University of Idaho students, has reached a plea deal to avoid the death penalty, according to a letter that prosecutors sent to relatives of the victims.
Kohberger had been set to go on trial on murder charges in August, nearly three years after the killings, which occurred at a residence near the university in Moscow, Idaho. A plea hearing is set for today.
In a letter to the victims’ families Monday, prosecutors said that Kohberger’s defense team asked for a plea offer
Credito Familiar
last week. Under the proposed agreement, which must be approved by the judge in the case, Kohberger would plead guilty to all charges, face four consecutive life sentences and waive all rights to appeal.
The family of Kaylee Goncalves, one of the victims, criticized the prosecution team for failing to consult with the families. Some of them had worked to change Idaho law to allow the firing squad as a form of capital punishment.
“After more than two years, this is how it concludes, with a secretive deal and a hurried effort to close the case without any input from the victims’ families on the plea’s details,” the Goncalves family said in a statement.
In their letter to the families, prosecutors wrote that the plea deal was “our sincere attempt to seek justice.”
“This agreement ensures that the defendant will be convicted, will spend the rest of his life in prison, and will not be able to put you and other families through the uncertainty of decades of post-conviction appeals,” they wrote. “Your viewpoints weighed heavily in our decisionmaking process, and we hope that you may come to appreciate why we believe this resolution is in the best interests of justice.”
Prosecutors did not respond to messages seeking comment, nor did lawyers for Kohberger. The families of the other victims did not comment immediately on the
proposed agreement.
Kohberger, now 30, was a criminology doctoral student at Washington State University, about a 20-minute drive from the crime scene. He grew up in Pennsylvania and studied psychology in college. He was arrested in December 2022 at his parents’ home in the Pocono Mountains area of Pennsylvania about six weeks after the killings.
Kohberger’s defense team tried unsuccessfully for months to undermine key pieces of evidence that investigators collected against him. Prosecutors have said that his DNA was found on a knife sheath recovered at the crime scene, and that records showed he had purchased a knife of a kind matching the sheath in the months before the killings. Video footage showed a car similar to his circling the neighborhood around the time of the deaths.
But investigators have yet to suggest a motive or offer any details on how the victims were chosen.
Kohberger’s lawyers filed a flurry of motions in recent months, including one trying to bar prosecutors from seeking the death penalty — in part, they said, because Kohberger had been diagnosed with autism. They unsuccessfully sought a delay in the trial, arguing that their team had not had enough time to comb through the vast amount of evidence in the case. But the judge ordered jury selection to commence Aug. 4.
Just hours before news of the plea deal Monday, one of Kohberger’s lawyers was in court in Pennsylvania, where she successfully argued that two witnesses who knew Kohberger as a teenager should be forced to testify at trial even though they did not want to.
Kohberger has been in jail since his arrest. His lawyers have given few hints about what defense they planned to offer, but have said that he was “out driving” on the night of the killings.
In the years before the killings, Kohberger indicated that he was interested in studying criminals. In a message to a friend in 2018, he wrote that he would like a job “dealing with high-profile offenders.” A few months before the killings, he posted on Reddit asking people who had spent time in prison to describe their “thoughts, emotions and actions from the beginning to end of the crime commission process.”
Investigators have said that the killings happened sometime around 4 a.m. on Nov. 13, 2022. The victims — Goncalves, 21; Madison Mogen, 21; Xana Kernodle, 20; and Ethan Chapin, 20 — had spent a typical Saturday night out near the university campus and returned to the house in the early hours of Sunday.
A roommate who survived the attack said she had heard what sounded like crying coming from the room of one of the women. She later told the police that she had opened her door and seen a man with bushy eyebrows in black clothes and a mask. The man left the house and the roommate began texting with another surviving roommate downstairs before taking refuge in her room.
But neither she nor anyone else called the police until more than seven hours later, when a friend came to the house and discovered the body of one of the victims.

Threat of more tariffs hangs over countries negotiating trade deals
By ANA SWANSON
Governments around the world are racing to negotiate trade deals with the United States in order to forestall
President Donald Trump’s punishing tariffs, which could kick in July 9. But the discussions have been slowed because Trump has threatened to impose more tariffs even if those deals are in place.
Trump announced what he refers to as “reciprocal tariffs” on April 8, saying they were in response to other countries’ unfair trading practices. But he agreed to pause those levies for 90 days to give countries time to reach trade deals with the United States. Some administration officials recently suggested that the deadline could be extended but Trump has signaled that he is ready to slap tariffs on countries he views as uncooperative.
“We have countries that are negotiating in good faith, but they should be aware that if we can’t get across the line because they are being recalcitrant, then we could spring back to the April 2 levels,” Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said in an interview with Bloomberg Television on Monday.
India, Vietnam, Japan, the European Union, Malaysia and other governments have been working toward deals that could smooth relations with the United States and avoid double-digit tariffs. But the Trump administration has been moving forward with plans to impose another set of tariffs on certain industries that it views as essential to national security, a threat that has foreign leaders worried there could be more pain ahead.
These tariffs are dependent on the outcomes of trade investigations into lumber and timber, copper and critical minerals by the Commerce Department, which are expected to be completed soon and submitted to the White House, according to people familiar with the matter. A determination that imports pose a national security threat would allow the president to issue tariffs on those products in the coming weeks. Investigations on pharmaceuticals, semiconductors and electronic devices are also proceeding and could be finished in time for tariffs as early as next month, the people said.
Bessent added that tariffs on imports of items such as lumber were being imposed on a different track from the reciprocal tariffs that were announced in April and are not part of the current round of trade negotiations.
Those tariffs on certain critical sectors, which would be issued under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962, aim to build up domestic capacity for important products and ensure that the country isn’t reliant on foreign factories in times of war or shortages.
But these sectors — along with automobiles and steel, on which the Trump administration has already applied national security tariffs — are also vital industries for America’s largest trading partners, like Japan, the European Union and India. These governments have been hesitant to strike a deal with the Trump administration, worried that they only will be hit by more levies down the road.
For some foreign governments, these national security tariffs are potentially more concerning than the reciprocal tariffs Trump is threatening to apply to all their U.S. exports.
For the EU, tariffs on medicines, the bloc’s No. 1 export to America, could be enormously painful. It is unclear whether a trade deal that the United States and the European Union have been drafting will address that issue. Friedrich Merz, the German chancellor, has suggested that negotiations should focus on a few key sectors including medical drugs.
Pharmaceutical tariffs are also a major threat for India, which the Trump team has consistently been optimistic about striking a deal with. Last year, India exported almost $13 billion worth of drugs, and the United States is its biggest market.
For Japan and South Korea, as well as Europe, exports of cars and steel to the United States have been a particular concern. Along with disputes over opening Japan’s market to U.S. agriculture, U.S. tariffs on Japanese cars appear to be a thorny obstacle in what U.S. officials presumed would be a relatively smooth negotiation.
Vietnam, Japan, Malaysia, South Korea and Indonesia could be hit by tariffs on semiconductors and other electronics, including phones and computers. Vietnam and Malaysia could also be hurt by tariffs on lumber and timber, which could cover products such as kitchen cabinets.
Several foreign governments have tried to negotiate provisions exempting them from other future tariff increases, but it’s not clear how lenient the Trump administration will be on national security tariffs.
The Trump administration has sent some mixed messages about how much it might be willing to lower them; some officials insist they are not up for negotiation.
Trump officials have criticized exemptions from global steel tariffs granted to various countries by the Biden administra-
tion, saying they undermined their effectiveness. Trade experts said giving tariff exemptions would also risk angering labor unions that support them and undercut the Trump administration’s argument that the tariffs must be in place to protect national security.
Nick Iacovella, the executive vice president of the Coalition for a Prosperous America, a trade group that supports tariffs, said that if the administration was “giving away” exemptions on tariffs on critical industries, it was “signaling to everyone that these really aren’t national security issues.”
Privately, Trump officials have said there may be some wiggle room. Notably, the framework agreement that the United States announced with Britain in May included some concessions on national security tariffs on cars and steel.
Britain secured an exemption from car tariffs for a volume of exports set at historical levels. That deal, as well as lower levies on aerospace exports such as Rolls-Royce jet engines, came into effect Monday, more than seven weeks after the framework agreement was announced. For most of that time, companies were unsure when lower tariffs would be implemented. However, the agreement to eliminate steel tariffs hasn’t been implemented as the two sides negotiate requirements for British steel companies.
This arrangement has encouraged Japan, the European Union and others to seek a “U.K.-style deal” to also exempt them from national security tariffs. But some Trump officials say that because the volume of their exports is so large, exemptions would be a major threat to U.S. industry.
British exports of cars and steel to the United States were viewed as too limited to be much of a threat. But such exports from Japan, Korea and Europe are substantial. Jamieson Greer, the United States Trade Representative, has said privately that the British provisions were not a precedent or framework for other countries, according to a person familiar with the remarks.

Trucks are loaded with containers at Yangluo Port, a domestic and international freight harbor on the Yangtze River, in Wuhan, China, May 23, 2025. As America’s largest trading partners race toward deals, they are increasingly worried about being hit with future tariffs on their critical industries. (Gilles Sabrié/The New
Peter Harrell, a former Biden administration official who is a nonresident fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, said Britain exports about 100,000 cars to the United States each year. But Japan, the European Union and South Korea together exported approximately 3.5 million cars in 2024, a much larger share of the U.S. market.
If the president exempted large quantities of these cars, “then it doesn’t look like you have a 25% auto tariff anymore,” Harrell said. “He’d face political blowback.”
The Commerce Department and the Office of the United States Trade Representative declined to comment. The White House did not respond to a request for comment.
For now, foreign governments appear wary of making substantial commitments on trade, only to see U.S. tariffs rise or potentially fall. The Trump administration is awaiting the outcome of a significant court case on whether the reciprocal tariffs are lawful. That decision could come this fall.

Nasdaq, S&P 500 close lower, weighed by tech stocks, Dow ends up
The Nasdaq and the S&P 500 closed lower on Tuesday, dragged down by weakness in largecap tech stocks, while the Dow ended higher in a volatile day marked by seasonally low liquidity.
Investors navigated a choppy session, between optimism over stimulus and caution around market concentration around a few tech stocks.
A sell-off of a few megacap tech and tech-adjacent momentum stocks, that had especially high gains in recent weeks, left markets vulnerable to sharp swings. The NYFANG index, which tracks 10 heavily traded tech names, fell 1.8%.
“We got to very overbought levels on tech and Nasdaq over the past weeks,” said Farz Azarm, managing director of Equities trading with Mizuho Americas. “Today you are seeing a massive unwind” of this movement, he said.
Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 400.17 points, or 0.91%, to 44,494.94. The S&P 500 lost 6.94 points, or 0.11%, to 6,198.01 and the Nasdaq Composite lost 166.84 points, or 0.82%, to 20,202.89.
News from Washington helped fuel optimism. U.S. President Donald Trump said he was not thinking of extending the July 9 deadline for countries to negotiate trade deals with the U.S., easing investor concerns about prolonged uncertainty.
The Senate’s passage of Trump’s tax package had investors weighing the bill’s stimulative effects against its multi-trillion dollar cost.
Tesla shares were hit by a renewed spat between CEO Elon Musk and Trump, while economic data backed the U.S. central bank’s patient stance on rate cuts.
Tesla dropped 5.4% after Trump threatened to cut off the billions of dollars in subsidies that Musk’s companies get from the federal government. Musk had revived his criticism of Trump’s wide-ranging tax cut and spending bill.
The blue-chip Dow got a boost from economically sensitive sectors such as materials and smallcaps, which outperformed. The Dow Transportation index, widely considered an economic barometer, jumped 2.9%, its biggest one-day gain since May 12.
“The markets are preparing for a boatload of stimulus with an already healthy economy,” said Rich Bernstein, CEO of Richard Bernstein Advisors. “But we are still in a very speculative market.”

In an attack at sunset, Israelis set a Palestinian village ablaze
By FATIMA ABDULKARIM
Dusk was settling over Kafr Malik, a quiet Palestinian village in the occupied West Bank. At the Afeef family’s home on the outskirts, a mother was putting her newborn to sleep in a ground-floor bedroom. Another relative was pulling up outside with her four young children in the car.
That calm was shattered soon afterward when scores of Israelis, many masked, descended on the village by foot and in vehicles, according to witnesses and local officials.
The attackers hurled Molotov cocktails and set homes and cars on fire, the witnesses and local officials said. The Israeli military said in a statement that dozens of Israeli civilians had set Palestinian property ablaze.
The violence in Kafr Malik, northeast of Ramallah, last week comes amid a sharp rise in settler attacks against Palestinians in the West Bank, where about 500,000 Israelis live in Jewish settlements among 3 million Palestinians. Settler attacks injured more than 220 Palestinians during the first five months of 2025, the highest rate in years, according to the United Nations. Settlers killed a Palestinian man on June 19, the U.N. said.
The violence in Kafr Malik set off a chain of confrontations between settlers and Israeli security forces in the area. Soldiers shot and wounded an Israeli youth Friday, prompting hard-right Israelis to clash with troops outside a military base and burn down a nearby security installation Sunday, the military said.
Tensions had been building in Kafr Malik for days before the attack. Residents had been grieving for a boy, Ammar Hamayel, 14, whom Israeli soldiers shot and killed in olive groves on the edge of the village two days previously, according to the Palestinian Health Ministry. The Israeli military said troops fired at “terrorists” who had thrown stones at an Israeli car and at them, hitting one.
One of the first houses to come under attack Wednesday was that of the Afeefs, home to Afee Afeef, his wife, Nariman, their six children and other relatives.
As Taghreed Jodeh, Afee Afeef’s sister-in-law, was pull-

to the ministry.
In its statement, the Israeli military said clashes broke out during the assault by Israeli civilians and that Israelis and Palestinians had hurled stones at each other. The military said that Palestinians had opened fire at soldiers, prompting return fire and resulting in several dead and wounded. Five Israeli civilians were detained, the statement added.
More than a dozen Kafr Malik residents said they had not heard shots before soldiers opened fire.
What provoked the initial violence is unclear.
Many settlers oppose such attacks against Palestinians. Settler leaders insist that the perpetrators consist of just a few dozen extremists, often living in hard-core hilltop outposts.
But violence between Israelis and Palestinians in the West Bank is not unusual, and settlers had also just marked the second anniversary of a deadly shooting attack nearby in which four Israeli civilians were killed. Graffiti outside Afeef’s home seen Friday included the Hebrew words for “vengeance” and “two years,” and partially named two victims of the shooting.
ing up in her car with her children, her nieces and nephews ran out to greet them. By the time Jodeh had climbed the stairs, the youngsters’ laughter had turned to screams and her car was in flames, she said in an interview. She and her sister raced down to grab the children and barely made it back upstairs as the attackers hurled firebombs in their direction, she recalled.
The attackers threw another firebomb into the bedroom where Afeef’s newborn nephew was being lulled to sleep, scorching furniture and leaving blackened marks on the floor and walls, the family said. The damage was visible when New York Times reporters visited Friday. The baby and his mother were unharmed.
Soon after, Israeli forces arrived and opened fired at Palestinians instead of stopping the rioters, according to multiple witnesses.
The soldiers killed three people, according to the Palestinian Health Ministry. Their relatives identified them as Murshid Hamayel, 35; Lutfi Baeirat, 18; and Muhammad Naji, 15. Nine others were injured, some gravely, according
At the core of the violence lies the decades-old competition over land as Jewish settlers who consider the West Bank part of their biblical birthright take territory that much of the world views as the heartland of a future Palestinian state. Most countries consider all Israeli settlement in the occupied territory a violation of international law.
At least seven settler outposts have gone up around Kafr Malik in recent months, Najeh Rustom, the mayor, said. The newest are creeping closer to the village’s land, he added.
The outposts are illegal even by Israeli standards but the government turns a blind eye to many and has retroactively authorized others.
Amjad Shayeb, the deputy mayor, said settler violence was not random: “It’s meant to make people afraid to live in their homes, to step onto their own land.”
Another resident, Shireen Said, said attackers had thrown firebombs at her home and tried to break in. She said soldiers had provided cover for the assault.
The village outskirts, where families once grazed sheep, planted crops or took evening walks, have become dangerous, residents said.
Explosion at Indian pharmaceutical factory kills 36
By PRANAV BASKAR
At least 36 people were killed and another three dozen seriously injured, officials said Tuesday, after a large explosion at a pharmaceutical factory set off a fire in the southern Indian state of Telangana.
A day after the explosion, which occurred Monday, firefighters had quenched the fire and were sifting through the burned wreckage of the plant at an industrial park about 30 miles from the state capital, Hyderabad, according to G.V. Narayana Rao, the state’s fire services director.
Emergency workers toured a scene of twisted metal and charred concrete as excavators worked their way between
heaping piles of wires, pipes and other debris.
Many of the injured were hospitalized with burns or suffering from smoke inhalation, but Rao said the death toll was not expected to rise.
India is the world’s largest manufacturer of generic pharmaceuticals, and industrial accidents at drug factories are common. However, Rao said, the death toll from Monday’s incident is the largest from a fire in the state in more than 25 years.
The plant, in Sangareddy, is owned by Sigachi Industries. It was manufacturing microcrystalline cellulose, a substance used in the production of medical capsules.
While it remains unclear what caused the fire, Rao said initial clues pointed to a pressure buildup in a dryer system that
may have resulted in a “dust explosion.” In an post on social media, Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India wrote he was “anguished by the loss of lives” and pledged 200,000 rupees (about $2,335) through his National Relief Fund to each of the deceased victims’ next of kin.

They demanded democracy. Years later, they are still paying the price.
By TIFFANY MAY
There was the software engineering major who crouched behind umbrellas to dodge rubber bullets. The social worker who marched with other pro-democracy protesters. And the student who handed out leaflets and made speeches.
All three had joined the Hong Kong protests that erupted in 2019, hoping for more democracy. Instead, the movement was crushed, and they, like many others, were arrested, sentenced and sent to prison.
More than 10,000 people were arrested during the monthslong uprising that began as peaceful mass rallies but grew sometimes violent as police responded with force. Almost one-quarter of those were convicted of crimes that include rioting and national security offenses.
China’s national security crackdown on Hong Kong, which began five years ago, has quelled protests and effectively outlawed public dissent. Many of the protesters have moved overseas or gone back to their lives.
But for those convicted of crimes, moving on has been hard. Some have found themselves shut out from their former careers; others feel stranded as their peers have moved on.
Here are the stories of three of them:
A career derailed
Fung, the social worker, who asked to be identified only by part of her name, had been arrested at a largely peaceful street protest. A conviction and prison sentence for rioting brought her five-year career to a halt.

Prison brought other hardships, too, as when her father’s cancer took a turn for the worse. She was told she could only see him on his deathbed or attend his funeral. The hospital visit she chose lasted only 10 minutes. When her father reached for her handcuffed hands, the officers forbade contact and ushered her away.
She applied to restore her license as a social worker, both while in prison and after her release, but was rejected despite having referrals from former professors
and colleagues.
“I feel I have shouldered my responsibility,” she said. “Now I want to move on and become a part of society again.”
She said she would keep trying, and has been working as a concierge for a luxury hotel in the meantime. While many of her friends have emigrated, Fung is determined to stay put. She has no regrets.
“I have very deep feelings for Hong Kong,” she said. “I have hope that it will get better.”
Missed opportunities
Chan Chi Sum was 20 when he was arrested and sentenced to prison for conspiracy to incite subversion. He had been a leader in a student group that had drawn the attention of authorities for running a street booth where they handed out flyers and warned that a government COVID contact-tracing app could be used for surveillance.

effectively outlawed public dissent while many of the protesters have moved overseas or gone back to their lives.
Since his release, he has been trying to make up for the two years he lost behind bars.
But some old friends have kept their distance. One who had plans to join the civil service sent him a text message but did not make plans to meet. Eventually, they stopped talking.
Many of his peers who had fought for democracy alongside him had moved on. He kept quiet at high school reunions when his former classmates discussed plans to buy property and have children.
“They all completed their degrees and became the people they wanted to be. But I didn’t get to become who I wanted to be,” Chan said.
In order to save up for further study, he worked as many odd jobs as he could find, including as a mover, a busboy and a video editor. He also earned a license to become a construction worker in case universities rejected him because of his record.
He is now pursuing a degree in media and culture and hopes to make videos and documentaries that would bear witness to the changing city. “I can show others the Hong Kong I see through my eyes,” he said.
Enforced silence
Tsui, the software engineering major, left prison to
find a city far different from the one he remembered.
Tsui, who asked to be identified only by his last name, served almost 2 1/2 years for rioting. Upon his release, he had initially wanted to speak out about the poor prison conditions, but his friends warned him against it.
Tsui feels frustrated that many who joined him in protesting seem to have set aside their political ideals and were even traveling regularly to mainland China for work or fun.
He landed a job as an entry-level system administrator in a large private company. He has tried to keep his time in prison a secret from new acquaintances.
But office talk about movies and songs popular when he was in prison made him feel left out, and jokes comparing the work grind to prison did not seem funny. He also learned to dodge questions like why he avoided visiting mainland China or downloading Chinese apps like WeChat.
Now, he censors himself during conversations, and has started warning other friends to be careful about making comments critical of the government on social media.
“We have all learned how to dance within the red lines,” he said.

Don’t be confused. US immigration policy is necessary COMMUNITY PERSPECTIVES
By GREGORIO IGARTÚA Special to The STAR
The federal government supervises and regulates immigration to the United States and U.S. citizenship through the authority it has under the Constitution (Art. I; see also Amendment XIV).
The United States Congress has authority over immigration policy and naturalization matters and delegates its administration to the Department of Homeland Security. Policy areas related to the immigration process include visa policy, asylum policy and naturalization policy. Policy areas related to illegal immigration include deferral policy and deportation policy.
Article I of the U.S. Constitution directly empowers Congress to enact laws regarding naturalization. Supreme Court decisions, such as Chae Chan Ping v. United States in 1889 and Fong Yue Ting v. U.S. in 1893, hold that Congress’ foreign policy powers extend to immigration legislation. The Fourteenth Amendment to the Constitution grants birthright citizenship. Consequently, Congress delegates the administration of immigration laws to the executive branch, and the president administers the operation of immigration laws and issues executive orders for that purpose.

Since 2003, the Department of Homeland Security has been responsible for implementing immigration policy in the United States and has three agencies overseeing immigration. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) is responsible for border control.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is responsible for domestic border enforcement and enforcement of laws against illegal immigration. Citizenship and Immigration Services (CIS) is responsible for processing legal immigration and naturalization. Other federal agencies involved in immigration policy include the Department of Justice’s Executive Office for Immigration Review and the Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of Refugee Resettlement.
Many good citizens from other countries want to move to the United States to improve their quality of life. Unlimited and/or illegal immigration to the United States is not viable. In fact, no country can allow an uncontrolled open borders policy, and not one does. People participating in protests against the present administration should explain how an open border policy can be economically and socially viable. Is there a limit to open border policy? What then is the limit they are calling for? The officials responsible for allowing illegal immigration should be held accountable for allowing violations of immigration laws.
The annual budget and national security are destabilized without an immigration control policy. This is not a matter of simple human charity. To propose, as some have done, opening the bordergates to the nation is to resolve the illegal with the illegal; it is to resolve the unreasonable with “unreason.”
The previous Biden administration allowed millions of foreigners to enter the nation illegally. The budget system and national security have been destabilized. As the song says, “there’s not enough beds for so many people.”
We have a system for legal entry of foreigners into the nation. In fiscal year 2023, approximately 1.2 million immigrants became legal permanent residents, also known as green card holders, in the United States. This figure was 15.2% higher than the previous year. The U.S. immigration system sets a limit of 675,000 permanent immigrants per year, but this does not apply to spouses, unmarried minor children, or parents of U.S. citizens. Additional visas are granted for families and people for employment purposes. Let us support the rationale behind the current immigration laws. Let us allow outsiders to enter for Christian reasons, but for national security reasons, let them enter under existing legal controls.

‘Jaws’ is a masterpiece, but ‘Jaws 2’ deserves a legacy, too
By MAYA SALAM
As a child, I collected so many shark jaws that my mom disappeared them all one day while I was at school because my room allegedly smelled “fishy.” I suspect it was my general fixation on the beasts that didn’t pass the sniff test.
When I first saw “Jaws” at age 8 — more than a decade after its 1975 release — it exploded my already sharkobsessed young mind. I should have been more scared, but instead I was captivated. When I saw “Jaws 2,” not long after, it spawned another great love of mine: monster movies, with all of their suspense, horror, surrealism and spectacle.
The original, which was directed by Steven Spielberg, is of course a monster movie, too — probably the best monster movie ever made — but it was also a masterpiece that changed cinema. But “Jaws 2,” released in 1978, was not trying to be anything but a monster movie. On that score, it’s a horrifying success and a feat in its own right — a sequel that delivers more of everything I want (which explains why I rewatch it every summer): more shark, more shark attacks, more screaming teens.
The film takes us back to Amity Island four years after the events of the first movie, with some of the same cast members returning. Roy Scheider is Martin Brody, the beleaguered police chief who once again is fighting to protect the seaside town from another killer great white. Scheider plays him with full-tilt, man-on-a-mission madness. Lorraine Gary is Martin’s wife, Ellen, and is more present in the sequel, offering crucial balance to her frenetic, spiraling husband. And Murray Hamilton is Mayor Larry Vaughn. How the mayor kept his job perhaps requires more suspension of disbelief than the fact that another shark is terrorizing the same community.
Unlike the first film, which is known for perfectly executing the slow-burn buildup to its monster reveal, the sequel gives us the creature immediately after the opening credits, when it swoops in on two scuba divers photographing a shipwreck.
From there, we get exponentially more shark. We get it charred. We get it capsizing a helicopter. And mostly, we get it terrorizing a group of teenagers, including Brody’s two sons, out on the open ocean as their fun-filled day of sailing catamarans turns bloody.
The stakes are higher, the action is relentless, dramatic and convincing, and the special effects — especially those on the water — are far more ambitious. In many ways, “Jaws 2” set the stage for a future of grander, more daring sequences.
At the time, the young stars’ performances were criticized, likened to those in after-school specials or slasher movies. “The irritating and incessantly screaming teenagers don’t make for very sympathetic victims either,” a BBC review reads.
First of all, harsh. They are being hun-

“Jaws” (1975)
ted by a monster, after all. But also, the many actors in those scenes powerfully portray real fear. When the Brodys come across Tina (Ann Dusenberry) cowering in her catboat — in shock, shivering and white as a ghost after seeing her boyfriend dragged to the depths — she conveys to them what had happened by sputtering a guttural scream, “Shaaaark!” That wail is forever imprinted on my psyche.
The many scenes on the water were influenced in part by the early 19th-century Géricault painting “The Raft of the Medusa,” which shows shipwreck survivors struggling against the forces of the sea. “The intent was to get some of that into the movie,” Carl Gottlieb, who wrote the film with Howard Sackler, said in the 2001 documentary “The Making of ‘Jaws 2.’”
Spielberg didn’t direct “Jaws 2.” According to a biography, Spielberg said that “making a sequel to anything is just a cheap carny trick,” though he also told an interviewer that he passed in part because of the problems he faced making “Jaws”; the three mechanical sharks malfunctioned so badly, it nearly destroyed the film’s production.
“I would have done the sequel if I hadn’t had such a ho -
rrible time at sea on the first film,” he said. “I knew that when I was walking away from the sequel I was walking away from a huge piece of my life that I helped to create, but it wasn’t a hard decision.”
Stepping in for Spielberg was Jeannot Szwarc, a French director who in the 1970s had mostly worked on TV films and series such as “The Rockford Files” and “Columbo.” Szwarc successfully managed to maintain the tone and atmosphere that Spielberg had created, and he did it under tremendous pressure.
The film had already been shooting with director John D. Hancock, but it wasn’t going well and he was removed. With a hard and fast release date, Szwarc was brought in with just weeks to prepare.
“I’m very proud of it,” he says in the documentary. “The odds were extraordinary, the difficulties were immense,” but, he added, “it stands on its own, and it works.”
What helps give “Jaws 2” that blockbuster motion-picture polish is John Williams’ score, which captures the energy of the ocean, both the freedom and the dread of the unknown.
In a featurette, Williams said he understood that theatergoers would expect the music of “Jaws” to return, calling it “part of the cast.” But he put the sequel assignment in context, part of “the great tradition” of signature music in Hollywood serials with Roy Rogers or the Lone Ranger.
In the featurette, Szwarc said that the film required Williams to compose broader and more varied music, and much more of it. Williams wrote a “youthful counterpoint to the shark theme that is always around when the kids are sailing,” Szwarc said. “It was very inventive.”
In the end, “Jaws 2” was a box office success and the first major blockbuster sequel. It was the most expensive movie Universal had yet made, but delivered the highest grossing opening weekend of all time up to that point — even beating “Grease,” which debuted on the same day, June 16, 1978.
If there’s nothing else you remember about the film, you almost surely know the tagline, created by Andrew J. Kuehn, a movie advertiser who helped revolutionize trailers that played before films, including those for “Jaws” and “Aliens.”

Kuehn was also known for his smart writing, and his tagline for “Jaws 2” — “Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water” — endures as one of the most recognizable and parodied in film history.
In his review of “Jaws 2,” New York Times critic Vincent Canby noted that “until great white sharks learn how to fly or use automatic weapons or develop their powers of telekinesis, it would seem that ‘Jaws 2’ has pretty much exhausted the cinematic possibilities of sharks as man-eating monsters.” Little did he know what was to come: “Sharknado,” “The Meg,” the new “Dangerous Animals” and many other shark movies so absurd, they make “Jaws 2” seem subtle.
7 beaches with ‘something more’ for the Fourth of July and beyond

By NIA DECAILLE
What makes a great beach? It’s not necessarily the quality of the sand and the water. Sometimes it’s a nearby boardwalk, or the chance to explore a secluded cove. Sometimes it’s the boat ride that carries you there.
Whether you’re in search of a relaxing day by the water, a sandy walking trail or a dockside snack, here are seven U.S. beaches to consider for July 4 — and for future summer travel.
A boardwalk with plenty more in Delaware Rehoboth Beach
Rehoboth Beach, a mile-long stretch of sand in a Delaware town of the same name, is popularly known as a vacation spot for the Bidens. But its boardwalk, lined with shops, restaurants and family-friendly attractions, steals the show. The town, a popular destination for LGBTQ+ travelers, draws a lively crowd during the summer, when visitors can catch a free concert, browse an outdoor market (Tuesdays) or savor an ice cream scoop.

Solitude on a Southern island in Georgia
Back River Beach
Tybee Island, in Georgia, is a small sliver of land about 30 minutes east of Savannah by car. Beachgoers who venture out toward the end of Highway 80, one of the main routes from the city, will find a sense of solitude on the usually uncrowded Back River Beach. Visitors can choose from a variety of nearby adventurous activities, the waters being ideal for paddleboarding, bird-watching and dolphin-sighting tours. As a big finale, consider sticking around for sunset or grabbing a bite at one of the local seafood restaurants.
Neighboring stretches of white sand in Alabama
Gulf Shores and Orange Beach
Gulf Shores and Orange Beach, each within a short drive of the other, offer the allure of white sand along Alabama’s Gulf Coast. While the warmer months can bring more visitors, Gulf Shores might be the ideal choice for visitors interested in the walking trails and pier at Gulf State Park. If you’re in search of excitement and festivities, choose Orange Beach for more aquatic activities and the area’s annual fireworks shows.
An underwater park in the U.S. Virgin Islands
Turtle Beach, Buck Island
Buck Island is a small federally protected island off the northeast coast of St. Croix, the largest of the United States Virgin Islands. Turtle Beach, known to locals as Buck Island Beach, is about an hour’s boat ride from the St. Croix town of Christiansted and is part of the Buck Island Reef National Monument. Entrance to the park is restricted — overnight camping on the island is not allowed, and the park is closed at night to protect sea turtles — but travelers can visit via private vessel or book tours and transportation through approved boat charters. Activities include snorkeling along the underwater trail, which leads you past shallow coral heads, and exploring the beach’s crystalline waters and stunning sands.
A haven for marine-life lovers in San Diego La Jolla Cove
La Jolla Cove, a tiny beach nestled among scenic sandstone cliffs, is one of nine beaches in San Diego with a permanent lifeguard station. The area is popular with snorkelers and scuba divers, though visitors might also enjoy a casual stroll through the cove close to sunset. The small stretch of sand lies within the San Diego-La Jolla Underwater Park Ecological Reserve, where spotting sunbathing sea lions isn’t uncommon. (Minutes away is another popular family beach, the Children’s Pool, for more marine-life sightings.) Brace yourself for some wildlife odors, knowing the coastal California views will more than make up for it.
A showcase for art fans in Oregon Nye Beach
Along the rugged cliffs of Oregon’s coast, among a smattering of beach options and outdoor attractions including the Yaquina lighthouses, the city of Newport brings local art to the beach. Nye Beach, a stretch of sandy shoreline between Yaquina Bay and Yaquina Head, offers beachgoers of all ages the chance to enjoy the shore and browse the local gift shops and restaurants. On your day trip, duck into the Visual Arts Center, a public exhibition space with children’s programming, exhibits and art classes (subjects range from textile origami to nighttime photography).

5 keys to a healthy diet
By CAROLINE HOPKINS LEGASPI
Ask any reputable dietitian or nutrition scientist about how to eat healthfully, and they will probably tell you to avoid dieting.
Many diets emphasize restriction, whether it’s of calories, carbohydrates, fats or something else. And that’s not a healthy strategy, said Alison Brown, a nutrition researcher at the National Institutes of Health. Diets like these can cause you to miss out on the range of nutrients your body requires, she said.
A better way to maintain healthy eating habits, she added, is to focus on foods that not only nourish, but also bring joy.
That can be challenging when nutrition fads are coming and going with seemingly increasing speed, and often conflicting advice. Is saturated fat the enemy or not? Are we all deficient in protein? Turns out, the best ways to foster healthy eating are also the simplest. Here’s how.
1. Prioritize whole foods
Not all processed foods are unhealthy, but they’re often stripped of beneficial nutrients, Brown said. And they may contain high levels of ingredients that can be harmful to health, such as added sugars and sodium.
Because of this, it’s best to consume foods “as close as possible to how they exist in nature,” Brown said.
Whole foods such as fruits, vegetables and nuts are packed with many important nutrients. Fiber, for instance, is linked with reduced risks for heart disease, Type 2 diabetes and certain cancers. And fruits and vegetables — especially leafy greens and berries — contain beneficial compounds that can reduce inflammation. In a recent study of nearly 50,000 women, scientists found that those who ate more whole grains, fruits, vegetables and legumes were more likely to age in a healthy way than those who ate fewer of those foods.
“The best foods don’t have a nutrition label,” said Christopher Gardner, a nutrition scientist and professor of medicine at Stanford.
2. Eat more healthy fats
During the 1980s, the dominant nutrition advice was to eat less fat. Yet researchers have since found that not all fats

are bad. In fact, eating more unsaturated fats, found in foods such as nuts, avocados, fish and olive oil, can lower levels of low-density lipoprotein (or “bad”) cholesterol in the blood, helping prevent heart attacks and strokes.
Saturated fats, on the other hand, which are found in animal products such as meat and dairy, can raise LDL cholesterol, increasing the risk of heart disease, Dr. Brown said.
You don’t need to cut saturated fats from your diet entirely, said Alice H. Lichtenstein, a professor of nutrition science and policy at Tufts University. But when choosing between healthy and unhealthy fat sources, try to opt for the healthier one.
3. Watch out for added sugars
While the experts focused on certain foods to eat more of, they did agree that you should limit added sugars. Added sugars should make up
fuller, longer, and make you less likely to reach for sugary snacks, Brown said. And whole foods, by definition, don’t include added sugars.
4. Try to cook more
According to recent government data, U.S. consumers spend a greater share of their income on meals outside the home than on groceries for home cooking.
There’s no harm in eating out occasionally, the experts said. But research suggests that people who prepare more meals at home are more likely to adhere to a healthier diet and consume fewer calories, and they are less likely to become obese or develop Type 2 diabetes.
Cooking doesn’t have to be complicated or time consuming, said Candice Schreiber, a clinical dietitian at the Ohio State University. You can prepare flavorful dishes using simple methods such as roasting or grilling. And meal prepping can save a lot of time, Schreiber said.
When you cook, Gardner recommended making fruits and vegetables the main part of your meal. Instead of a hunk of beef with a small side of vegetables, for instance, have vegetables as the main dish with a small side of meat. Or instead of cheesecake with a couple berries on top for dessert, he added, have a bowl of berries with a dollop of cheesecake on top.
5. Find joy, and flavor, in healthy eating
Learning to love healthy food often takes patience and experimentation.
less than 10% of your daily calories, or no more than 50 grams if you consume 2,000 calories per day, according to federal guidelines. The American Heart Association sets a stricter limit of no more than 25 grams of added sugars per day for women and no more than 36 grams per day for men.
Diets high in added sugars can increase risks of heart disease, Type 2 diabetes and obesity, among other chronic conditions.
Added sugars are found in many foods, including those you may not expect, such as store-bought tomato sauces and salad dressings. So they can be hard to avoid.
But if you follow the other healthy diet strategies — namely eating more whole foods — you’re likely to consume fewer of these sugars overall, the experts said. The fiber in whole fruits and vegetables, for instance, can help you stay
“One of my biggest pet peeves as a dietitian is when people think healthy food can’t taste good,” Schreiber said. “It absolutely can.”
To find joy in a healthy diet, Gardner said, try adding flavorful herbs and spices to your food. Jazz up nuts or vegetables with a homemade “flavor dust” made from garlic, onion and Worcestershire powders, for instance.
And search for healthier alternatives to less healthful foods that you love, Gardner said. If you have a bowl of ice cream every night, see if berries or apple slices with honey or nut butter can hit the same spot. Or if potato chips are your regular midafternoon snack, try popcorn with a little olive oil and nutritional yeast. It can take some time to find these healthier alternatives, Gardner said. But don’t give up. It “really is feasible” to find something that you love just as much, if not more, he said.
Nutrition experts say the keys to healthy eating lie in focusing on nutrient-rich foods and making them tasty, too. (Seb Agresti/The New York Times)

In 1975, Arthur Ashe made his point

Arthur Ashe’s Wimbledon victory over Jimmy Connors in 1975, with which he became the first Black man to win the tournament’s singles title, was not his first major championship. It was, however, his first and only career win over Connors in seven tries. (Reddit via r/OldSchoolCool)
By CINDY SHMERLER
Two nights before he played one of the most important tennis matches of his life, Arthur Ashe had dinner with three of his best friends.
It was in London in 1975, and Ashe was scheduled to play Jimmy Connors, the defending champion and world No. 1, in the Wimbledon final on Saturday. Ashe chose the Playboy Club, where the foursome could sit undisturbed at a table in the back.
That Thursday night, Ashe, Donald Dell, his attorney and manager, Charlie Pasarell and Freddie McNair, both players and friends of Ashe, exchanged pleasantries and then got down to business. They devised a game plan to disrupt Connors, shake up his rhythm and allow Ashe to control points rather than be controlled by an opponent nearly 10 years his junior. It was all antithetical to the big serving, groundstroke-pounding, sometimes reckless style Ashe was accustomed to playing.
“We told him, ‘Arthur, this is what you need to do,’ ” Pasarell, now 81, who first met Ashe at the Orange Bowl junior championships when the two were teenagers, said by phone this month.
“First, he would serve out wide to Jimmy’s two-handed backhand to pull him off
the court. Then he would step in, hit a short ball with little pace to Jimmy’s forehand. Giving dinks and junk to Jimmy would give him fits. All that worked especially well on grass where the ball would skid.”
The next morning, Dell, who was staying at the same hotel as Ashe, grabbed an envelope from the front desk and wrote on the back the three key points they had discussed the night before, including Ashe’s liberal use of the lob whenever Connors would crowd the net. He left the note in Ashe’s hotel mailbox.
“During the changeover after the first game I saw Arthur take the envelope out of his racket bag,” said Dell, now 87, by phone this month. “People thought he was meditating throughout the match, but he was actually rereading the notes. And they worked perfectly.”
It has been 50 years since Ashe defeated Connors, 6-1, 6-1, 5-7, 6-4, in the first all-American men’s Wimbledon final since 1947, just days before his 32nd birthday.
The first set was over in about 20 minutes, with Connors taking only the opening game and Ashe never facing a break point. Backed by a reliable serve that propelled him to the net and allowed for potent forehand volleys, Ashe won the sewcond set 25 minutes later.
Connors won the third set, but Ashe continued to stymie him with his constant changes of pace. Ashe ended the match with the plan that worked best, a serve wide to the forehand followed by a high forehand volley winner.
“It was strange to see Arthur hitting angle serves and softball shots,” said Stan Smith, the Wimbledon champion in 1972, by phone this month. “Jimmy was hoping to have a slugfest, but Arthur mixed it up perfectly.”
Ashe became the first Black man to win the tournament’s singles title. He died in 1993 at 49 of AIDSrelated pneumonia.
He had been infected with HIV via a tainted blood transfusion after heart surgery.
“That match was huge not just for Arthur but for the entire Black community,” said his widow, Jeanne MoutoussamyAshe, 73, a photographer who at the time was working in the graphics department of WNBC in New York on the day of the final. (She and Ashe would not meet until a year later.) “It put him in a completely different field for people to know him worldwide. He was everything you expected a Wimbledon champion to be. He was royalty.”
Ashe’s Wimbledon victory over Connors was not his first major championship. He won the U.S. Open in 1968, becoming the first Black man to win the singles title at a major, and the Australian Open in 1970. It was, however, his first and only career win over Connors in seven tries.
There was considerable drama on and off the court before their Wimbledon confrontation. Connors had sued the ATP, the men’s players’ tour whose president was Ashe, for $10 million for restraint of trade after Connors was barred from competing in the 1974 French Open because he had contracted to play World TeamTennis.
Then, just days before the start of Wimbledon, Connors sued Ashe for $5 million
for comments Ashe made after Connors declined to play in the Davis Cup for the United States earlier in the year. Connors eventually dropped both lawsuits the next year.
Connors has said little about the match in the past 50 years. Reached via email through his son, Brett, he declined to be interviewed for this article. In his autobiography, “The Outsider,” published in 2013, Connors wrote that, following a slip on Centre Court during his first-round match, he injured his knee with hairline fractures to his shin, which contributed to his loss to Ashe.
Ashe got a measure of cheeky revenge when he walked onto Centre Court for the final wearing red, white and blue wristbands. He accepted his winners’ trophy wearing a Davis Cup team jacket emblazoned with USA.
“I don’t think Jimmy had anything to do with Arthur’s will to win Wimbledon,” said Moutoussamy-Ashe, who more than a decade ago helped found the Arthur Ashe Legacy at UCLA, designed to honor his dedication to social justice and human rights.
“It took a lot of guts. It was an intellectual game. He did what he had to do to win it. The issues with Jimmy probably made it sweeter and made for good locker room banter, but winning Wimbledon was about winning Wimbledon.”
Pasarell agreed.
“There was no love lost between Arthur and Jimmy,” Pasarell said. “All those things were at play. But winning Wimbledon, that’s everybody’s dream. That’s what you play the game for.”
Ashe often sidestepped his on-court accomplishments, especially his impact on Black tennis players. That said, one of the first people Nelson Mandela asked to meet following his release from a South African prison in 1990 was Ashe. Instead, Ashe stressed the importance of education in that meeting.
In 1976, in a BBC television interview just before he defended his Wimbledon title, Ashe was asked how he felt about being “an ambassador for your race.” Ashe looked up, a bit surprised.
“I don’t like it, but I feel it,” he told the interviewer. “I don’t shrug it off. There’s a myth about athletes that they’re all brawn and no brains. Black athletes have even more brawn and less brains. I like to fight that myth, and I assume that role heartily.”
