Puerto Rico Ports Authority Executive Director Norberto Negrón Díaz announced Sunday that the Financial Oversight and Management Board approved the submitted budget for the agency’s 2025 Capital Improvement Program, which totals some $40,440,351.
“”This budget is earmarked for the ongoing refurbishment of our port facilities and the international and regional airports managed by the Puerto Rico Ports Authority (PRPA),” Negrón Díaz said in a press release. “This is a very important step, not only because of the work being carried out with these funds, but also because it demonstrates the success of the transparency policy and sound management of public funds that we have implemented since we took over the public corporation in January.”
The official noted that for some months now they have maintained direct communication with the oversight board’s technical teams, as well as the Office of Management & Budget and Gov. Jenniffer González Colón.
“Our governor has insisted from day one that every budget process must be carried out within a framework of clarity, constant review, and with tangible compliance metrics,” Negrón Díaz said. “The Board’s approval of this Capital Improvement Program demonstrates the efficiency of this process for the benefit of the people.”
The budget approved by the federal entity through the Puerto Rico Oversight, Management and Economic Stability Act, better known as PROMESA, is primarily funded by Ports’ own revenues, which are derived from rentals, concessions and other operational sources.
It also incorporates items intended to match federal funds allocated through various agencies and programs such as the Federal Aviation Administration, the Community Development Block Grant program, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the United States Maritime Administration, and the Rebuilding America’s Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity, or RAISE, program.
“The Capital Improvement Program’s mission is to strengthen critical infrastructure in airport and maritime systems, raising operational safety standards, resilience to natural phenomena such as hurricanes, and ensuring that Puerto Rico has modern and competitive port facilities that support economic growth now and in the future,” the Ports chief said.

Farmers in Puerto Rico now have until Dec. 15 to apply for this year’s agricultural incentives, following an extension announced by designated Agriculture Secretary Irving Rodríguez Torres alongside Gov. Jenniffer González Colón. The original deadline was Sunday, Nov. 30.
The program, which supports purchases ranging from fertilizers to livestock, saw a major funding boost this fiscal year -- from $37 million to $61 million. About 75% of the funds have already been distributed, Rodríguez Torres said, noting that applications will be processed on a first-come, first-served basis and subject to eligibility until resources are exhausted.
The additional $24 million allowed the department to expand eligible categories and increase subsidy amounts. For example, incentives for beef cattle rose from $200 to $300
per head, while egg-laying hen support now applies to farms with 1,000 hens or more, down from the previous threshold of 10,000 -- a change aimed at helping small producers.
“These incentives used to favor large-scale farmers,” González Colón said, emphasizing that the new approach seeks to make the program more inclusive.
Technology incentives have also gained traction. Farmers using drones for spraying or fertilizing can receive $100 per hour, up to $8,000 per beneficiary.
Applications can be filed at the department’s central office or regional offices in Arecibo, Caguas, Lares, Mayagüez, Naranjito, Ponce, San Germán and Utuado.
The governor highlighted that the funding increase is part of a broader effort to reduce Puerto Rico’s dependence on imported food, which currently accounts for 80-90% of consumption.

Puerto Rico Mayors Association President Jorge “Georgie” González Otero has strongly rejected a proposed solution to the ongoing issues related to the inventory tax, floated by United Retailers Center (CUD by its acronym in Spanish) President Dr. Ramón Barquín III, that would involve laying off hundreds of municipal employees. Barquín made the suggestion last week during a local news program (Noticentro).
González Otero responded, “Barquín needs to think carefully about his public statements. First, his comments reflect a troubling bias against public service. Second, it’s imprudent to suggest such drastic measures. He even claimed that some municipalities in Puerto Rico have populations of fewer than 1,200 inhabitants, which is false.”
According to the latest U.S. Census (2020), the municipality with the smallest population in Puerto Rico is
Culebra, which has 1,792 residents.
González Otero, who is the mayor of Jayuya (population 14,653, according to census data from 2023), challenged Barquín’s assertion, saying, “He should speak to Edilberto Romero, the mayor of Culebra, who is not a member of my party, and propose that he lay off municipal employees. Who will provide public services to the people of Culebra then?”
The Mayors Association groups island mayors affiliated with the Popular Democratic Party.
In the television interview, Barquín argued for the elimination of the inventory tax, claiming it increases prices and negatively impacts the economy. However, González Otero pointed out the irony in Barquín’s admission to the press that eliminating the tax would not necessarily lead to lower prices for consumers.
“We are all consumers,” the Mayors Association president emphasized. “I want to reiterate our support for public service and for promoting local entrepreneurship.
The solution cannot be to resort to hasty layoffs; that is unacceptable.”

Natural and Environmental Resources (DNER) Secretary Waldemar Quiles Pérez announced Sunday that the Puerto Rico Center for Rehabilitation of Native Species and Management of Exotic Species, which is attached to the DNER, is in the final phase of the transfer of rhesus monkeys and caimans, among other species, to the National Zoological Park of the Dominican Republic.
The transfer request was confirmed by an official letter signed by National Zoological Park General Director Dr. Nayib Aude, and received last Thursday, in which he reiterated that “these species will be received and handled in accordance with the established protocols and under the functions that correspond to us as a rescue center.”
The first transfer, paid for by the National Zoo, consists of six rhesus monkeys, two males and four females, as well as two caimans, one of which is male.
“The primary goal of the Puerto Rico Native Species Rehabilitation and Exotic Species Management Center is to find

opportunities for these exotic species to live in an optimal environment for their development,” Quiles Pérez said. “Therefore, whenever one of these species is captured, the Center’s staff seeks out spaces that meet all the requirements for the healthy coexistence of these animals. One such place is the National Zoological Park in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.”
“We thank Dr. Aude and his team for this opportunity,”
the DNER chief added. “Likewise, I want to highlight the leading role played by the director of our Center, Lieutenant Ángel Atienza of the Ranger Corps, who has always sought to find suitable locations for these species. This process has been carried out with complete transparency and under the strictest regulations regarding the handling of these species.”
Since taking over the department in January, Quiles Pérez has made it one of his priorities to identify facilities and institutions that can serve as a permanent home for the illegal exotic species that are captured every day.
The physical structures that make up the center in Arecibo suffered serious damage when Hurricane Maria struck in September 2017. Rehabilitation work began in August 2024, in accordance with the specifications of the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
This year, as part of Gov. Jenniffer González Colón’s public policy to expedite all construction processes associated with federal funds, Quiles Pérez began an expedited process to advance the work on the facility, which is unique in Puerto Rico.

The Puerto Rico Energy Bureau (PREB) has issued a “Resolution and Order” requiring the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority (PREPA) to submit by this Friday all documentation related to the accelerated renewable energy procurement process authorized under Gov. Jenniffer González Colón’s executive order and the PREB’s Sept. 26 directive.
The PREB’s mandate covers every piece of material generated, received, transmitted or used during the expedited process, including -- but not limited to -- communications with bidders, proposals submitted, and all internal evalua-
tions and analyses conducted by PREPA. Failure to comply could result in financial penalties, the regulator warned. The heightened scrutiny follows PREPA’s Nov. 13 filing claiming compliance with the PREB’s earlier resolution and requesting confidentiality for certain documents. That filing included an analysis of submitted proposals and recommendations, along with evaluation summaries where bidder names were redacted per PREB guidelines.
The accelerated procurement process stems from Executive Order OE-2025-047, issued Sept. 22, which expanded Puerto Rico’s energy emergency and authorized extraordinary measures to fast-track renewable and storage projects eligible for federal tax credits under the One Big Beautiful
Bill Act (OBBA).
The PREB emphasized that the actions aim to ensure transparency, accountability and effective oversight in a critical phase of Puerto Rico’s energy transition. The regulator’s stance signals that the coming weeks will be pivotal for advancing renewable generation and storage capacity on the island.
Looking ahead, industry observers expect the process to shape Puerto Rico’s ability to meet its renewable energy targets and leverage federal incentives. The outcome could redefine the island’s energy landscape, accelerating the shift away from fossil fuels and toward a more resilient, sustainable grid.

Puerto Rico’s energy future took a pivotal turn last week as the Financial Oversight and Management Board conditionally approved a controversial contract to secure liquefied natural gas (LNG) for the island’s power plants.
The agreement, involving the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority (PREPA), the Public-Private Partnership Authority, and NF Energía LLC (NFE) aims to supply LNG to the San Juan and Palo Seco generation units and other facilities transitioning to natural gas.
The decision comes after months of scrutiny and heated debate over market competition, infrastructure control, and the island’s vulnerability to supply disruptions. While the revised contract promises billions in savings and improved reliability, it leaves one critical issue unresolved: exclusive access to Puerto Rico’s only LNG-equipped port.
Natural gas is central to Puerto Rico’s plan to stabilize its fragile electrical grid and reduce reliance on costly diesel. But the island’s LNG lifeline runs through the Puerto Nuevo Port in San Juan -- a facility controlled by NFE under a 20-year lease granting exclusive rights to key berthing spaces and operational zones. The arrangement has created what critics call an “operational monopoly,” limiting competition and leaving Puerto Rico dependent on a single supplier.
The stakes are high. Any disruption at the San Juan terminal could cripple electricity

generation, threatening homes, businesses and the economy.
The oversight board’s approval is far from unconditional. The island government must:
* Revise the LNG Tolling Term Sheet for clarity.
* Assess the Ports Authority lease with NFE and explore legal avenues to open competitive access to the San Juan terminal.
* Recover costs and enforce penalties for NFE’s past delivery failures, including com-
pensation for diesel expenses and collection of outstanding damages.
Without these measures, the board warns, Puerto Rico’s energy system will remain vulnerable and noncompetitive.
When the original contract surfaced in June 2025, the oversight board flagged numerous concerns: a 15-year term inconsistent with procurement rules, exclusive supply rights for NFE, lack of regasification infrastructure, and risk-heavy provisions
shielding NFE from liability -- even in cases of intentional breach.
After consultations with government officials, industry experts, and stakeholders, the revised contract addresses most of those issues. Key improvements include:
* Shorter contract duration.
* Lower minimum purchase volumes.
* A requirement for NFE to allow third-party LNG deliveries if it cannot supply.
* Stronger “deliver or pay” obligations.
* Measures to mitigate conflicts of interest with Genera PR LLC, PREPA’s agent.
The listed changes could save Puerto Rico more than $4 billion in fuel costs and ensure continuity of supply if NFE falters.
Despite progress, the elephant in the room remains: port access. As long as NFE’s exclusivity stands, competitive procurement will be stifled, keeping prices high and options limited. The oversight board acknowledges that a tolling agreement could offer temporary relief, but warns that true market openness requires structural change.
The government now faces a race against time to secure alternative access and enforce accountability, the board noted. Failure to act could lock Puerto Rico into a single-supplier model for years, undermining efforts to build a resilient, cost-effective energy system.
For now, the oversight board said, the conditional approval buys breathing room -- but the island’s LNG future still hangs on a delicate balance between monopoly control and competitive reform.

Puerto Rico House of Representatives
Deputy Speaker Yashira Lebrón Rodríguez announced Sunday that some 16 measures focused on women were addressed, including several bills and research resolutions, during the lower chamber’s second ordinary session, which ended late last month.
“Our speaker, Carlos ‘Johnny’ Méndez, has been clear about the importance of we in the House of Representatives promoting legislation that addresses specific issues for Puerto Rican women, and in this session that began in August and just ended, we took concrete actions with 16 measures, including from members of other delegations, because this issue has no political parties,” Lebrón Rodríguez said.
“We focused on these core issues for our
people, including women, during the last session, and the result is there,” she added. “We will continue working to improve the quality of life for women in Puerto Rico.”
Among the measures addressed was House Bill (HB) 176, authored by New Progressive Party (NPP) majority leader in the House, Rep. José “Pichy” Torres Zamora, which adds a new Rule (6.2) to the 1963 Rules of Criminal Procedure to require a psychological evaluation in cases where probable cause is found for a crime under Law No. 54 of Aug. 15, 1989, known as the “Law for the Prevention of and Intervention with Domestic Violence.”
The House also approved HB 165, a bipartisan measure filed by several NPP lawmakers and Dignity Project Rep. Lisie Burgos Muñiz, which would create the “Law for the Protection and Safety of Women in Public Restrooms.” HB 216, introduced by Rep. Luis
“Junior” Pérez Ortiz, which amends Law 1952011 (Law for the Right to Protection of the Primary Residence and the Family Home) to add greater benefits for those requesting safe house protection, and HB 246, filed by Rep. José “Che” Pérez Cordero, which creates a digital platform (Cuéntamelo) to make it easier to report abuse, were also reviewed and approved during the second session of the year. In addition, three reports were received regarding House Resolution 138, authored by Rep. Wanda del Valle Correa, which directs the Committee on Women’s Affairs to conduct an investigation into all matters related to the full development of women in society. The House also approved HB 548, another measure authored by del Valle, which mandates that prosecutors, family and juvenile advocates complete a certain number of hours of training on domestic violence.

President Donald Trump and his top aides have said that drug cartels present one of the most pressing dangers to the United States, and have promised to eradicate them from the Western Hemisphere.
As part of that effort, Trump signaled Saturday that he was ratcheting up his campaign against drug cartels, saying in a social media post that airspace above and surrounding Venezuela should be considered “CLOSED IN ITS ENTIRETY.”
Less than 24 hours earlier, Trump had announced on social media that he was granting a full pardon to Juan Orlando Hernández, a former president of Honduras who had been convicted in the United States of drug trafficking charges in what was seen as a major victory for authorities in a case against a former head of state. That pardon has not yet been officially granted.
The two posts displayed a remarkable dissonance in the president’s strategy as he moved to escalate a military campaign against drug trafficking while ordering the release of a man prosecutors said had taken “cocaine-fueled bribes” from cartels and “protected their drugs with the full power and strength of the state — military, police and justice system.” In fact, prosecutors said that Hernández, for years, allowed bricks of cocaine from Venezuela to flow through Honduras en route to the United States.
Sen. Tim Kaine, D-Va., called the pardon “unconscionable” and said that Trump’s actions were more evidence of a “bogus narrative” around his strategy to counter illicit drugs.
“It completely undercuts the administration’s claim that they really care about narco-trafficking, and that raises the question of what is really going on with the Venezuela operation,” he said.
The Trump administration has struggled to provide a clear strategic rationale for why it has amassed such a large military presence in the Caribbean. The president has most often pointed to counternarcotics operations, but the size of the U.S. forces in the region suggests bigger ambitions. In private, the president has shown an interest in Venezuela’s oil reserves, while he and his aides also have said they want to oust President Nicolás Maduro.
In a statement, Trump said he had issued the pardon to Hernández because “many friends” had asked him to do so, adding, “They gave him 45 years because he was the president of the country — you could do this to any president on any country.” (After Trump left office, he was convicted of 34 felony counts of falsifying business records, related to the reimbursement of hush money paid to porn actor Stormy Daniels to cover up a sex scandal around the 2016 presidential election.)
“By securing the border and striking designated narco-terrorists smuggling drugs to kill Americans, the president has undoubtedly done more than anyone to take on the scourge of illicit drug deaths,” Anna Kelly, a White House spokesperson, said in a statement.
Over the last several weeks, senior officials have made clear that the administration is focused on taking on drug cartels in the Caribbean and South America.
“We are going to make sure that the American people are safe and protected from transnational organized crime,” Stephen Miller, a top adviser to Trump, told reporters earlier this month. “Venezuela is run by a narco-terrorist ring that traffics drugs, weapons, human traffics, as well, into the United States.”
And just over two hours after Trump’s announcement of a pardon for Hernández, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth posted on social media, “We have only just begun to kill narco-terrorists.”
Over the last several months, the United States has been building up its military presence in the Caribbean, part of a campaign that the administration has said is primarily about stopping the flow of drugs in the region. The U.S. military has launched nearly two dozen strikes since early September on boats that it claimed were carrying drugs to the United States, killing more than 80 people. But the administration has yet to detail evidence for those claims.
“Hernández was convicted of conspiring to traffic 400 tons of cocaine into the United States, and he gets a pardon,” said Tommy Vietor, a former spokesperson for the National Security Council in the Obama
administration who now co-hosts the liberal podcast “Pod Save America.” “Meanwhile, these unknown individuals who may or may not be fisherman or drug traffickers — we don’t really know — are getting murdered in the open seas. The policy is nonsensical and blatantly illegal.”
Trump has also put intense pressure on Maduro, Venezuela’s authoritarian leader, accusing him of being the boss of a drug organization called Cartel de los Soles, even though experts in Latin American criminal and narcotics issues say it is not an actual organization. Trump has also authorized covert CIA action in Venezuela, and many American officials say privately that their goal is to drive Maduro from power.
The president’s decision to pardon Hernández shocked officials in Honduras and in the United States. Prosecutors had asked the judge to make sure Hernández, 57, would die behind bars, citing his abuse of power, connections to violent traffickers and “the unfathomable destruction” caused by cocaine. He was sentenced to 45 years in prison, and his conviction came as part of a sweeping drug case in which several former traffickers took the stand as government witnesses.
Hernández’s family has attempted to portray his conviction as political persecution, seeking to win over Trump. But much of the investigation occurred during Trump’s first term, and one of the lead investigators in the case was Emil Bove III, then a prosecutor for the Southern District of New York and later one of Trump’s personal lawyers. Trump installed Bove as a top official at the Justice Department in his second term before nominating him to serve as an appeals court judge.
Ricardo Zuniga, a former principal deputy assistant secretary in the State Department’s Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs, said it was “quite evident” that Hernández was involved in criminal activity across multiple U.S. administrations.
“I would be surprised if you didn’t find multiple people in the pro-Trump space, including the law enforcement community, who are not shocked by this,” he said.

The United States late last week paused all asylum decisions and stopped issuing visas to people from Afghanistan as President Donald Trump launched a major review of the country’s immigration system after the shooting of two National Guard members.
Joseph Edlow, the director of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, said in a statement that his agency had “halted all asylum decisions until we can ensure that every alien is vetted and screened to the maximum degree possible.”

Trump cut the number of asylum claims dramatically by moving to seal the southern border when he took office. Friday’s decision affects people who already are in the United States and believe they would face persecution if they returned to their home country.
The State Department also announced Friday night that it was halting visas for Afghans, including those who had helped the United States during the war in their country.

The State Department formally instructed its diplomats to stop processing all immigrant and nonimmigrant visas for Afghan passport holders, according to a copy of a cable obtained by The New York Times. Diplomats are supposed to conduct any scheduled visa interviews, but not grant the visas. If visas have been approved and printed but not handed to the applicant, diplomats should destroy the printed visas, the cable says.
The order by Secretary of State Marco Rubio freezes the Special Immigrant Visa program for Afghans, which had been set up for people who had helped the U.S. military and government in the war. All applicants had undergone official vetting. As the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan grew closer in 2021, a bipartisan coalition of lawmakers had pushed to expedite Special Immigrant Visas for those who had helped the Americans. Afghans entering the United States under that program or as refugees all went through a rigorous vetting process; the ones with Special Immigrant Visas got green cards after arriving.
“It appears Secretary Rubio is attempting to shut down the Afghan Special Im-
and Border Protection agents check the documents of migrants at the Paso Del Norte International Bridge in El Paso, Texas, Jan 20, 2025. migrant Visa program in direct violation of federal law and standing court orders,”
Shawn VanDiver, the head of AfghanEvac, a group that tries to resettle Afghans in the United States, said in a statement. “Our hearts are absolutely broken for our Afghan allies, who have already endured more trauma, loss, and sacrifice than most Americans can imagine.”
Afghan refugee applications had been frozen months earlier, in a blanket refugee ban. Trump then issued a travel ban in June on 19 countries that included Afghanistan, but there has been an exception for applicants for Special Immigrant Visas. With this latest action, the final legal entrance for Afghans outside the United States has been closed.
In recent days, officials also announced that they were reviewing green cards given to people from countries banned from travel to the United States by the administration, pausing all immi-
gration applications from Afghan immigrants and beginning a review of asylum requests granted during the Biden administration.
“The protection of this country and of the American people remains paramount, and the American people will not bear the cost of the prior administration’s reckless resettlement policies,” Edlow wrote on social media in announcing the green card review Thursday. “American safety is non negotiable.”
The asylum system in the United States has long experienced backlogs. As USCIS became overwhelmed by border crossings in recent years, applications for asylum filed inside the United States grew.
A July 2024 report by the Homeland Security Department’s inspector general found that at the end of the 2023 fiscal year, USCIS had more than 1 million asylum cases pending determination.

For my giving column this year, I chose two groups that inspired me with their resistance to Donald Trump’s attacks on immigrants lacking permanent legal status. Both are doing heroic work, but they’re squeezed between an expanding need for their services and a political climate that threatens their resources.
I first encountered Lindsay Toczylowski, president and CEO of the Immigrant Defenders Law Center, in April, when I was writing about her client Andry Hernández Romero. A gay makeup artist from Venezuela, he was sent by the administration to rot in a hellish mega-prison in El Salvador, all because someone identified his tattoos, tributes to his parents, as gang-related. After his release as part of a prisoner swap in July, he described some of the horrific abuse Trump’s rendition policy enabled, including sexual assault by guards.
Unlike criminal defendants, most immigrants held in Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention centers aren’t entitled to legal counsel. Immigrant Defenders, based in Southern California, steps in to help people who might otherwise disappear into the system. It operates a legal assistance hotline for those caught up in ICE’s dragnet, as well as one of the country’s largest legal programs for

deported veterans. Toczylowski said the group had brought back dozens over the last four years.
Many of Immigrant Defenders’ clients are children who crossed the border without their parents and who, by law, are supposed to be given legal services. This year, Trump tried to cut off government funding for their legal representation, forcing Immigrant Defenders to lay off attorneys. A court ordered the money restored, but Toczylowski said there’s “grave uncertainty” about the future.
Toczylowski had expected the second Trump term to be tough on her staff and her clients, but it’s been even worse than she feared. Most of the people Immigrant Defenders serves have no criminal convictions. Many have been in the country decades and have children and even grandchildren who are citizens. “The types of cases that we’re working on are just a whole new level of heartbreaking,” she said.

This summer, I went to Los Angeles to write about residents organizing to protect themselves from ICE. People had set up local patrols, honking horns or blowing whistles to warn their neighbors when immigration agents were nearby. They’d monitored the Home Depots where migrant day laborers gather so that if workers were arrested, someone would be there to document it and alert their family members.
Central to much of this activism was the National Day Laborer Organizing Network, an organization founded in 2001 to assist the frequently exploited workers who power California’s construction, moving and landscaping industries who are often in the country illegally. Before this year, it focused on helping these workers find jobs, recover unpaid wages and protect themselves in hazardous worksites. Then Trump returned to power, and Pablo Alvarado, the network’s co-founder, realized it would need to build a movement to defend its people from the government. “We are an organization that is nimble,” he said. “We adapt to new circumstances.”
Soon the network was on the cutting edge of the resistance to Trump. This year, it trained 5,500 volunteers to keep tabs on ICE and the people it’s targeting. Next year, it hopes to double that. Churches are reaching out to the organization, as well as groups like Indivisible and the 50501 movement, as their members search for ways to
stand up to the administration that go beyond street protest. Despite this influx of energy, Alvarado said that foundation money is drying up; some philanthropists seem wary of crossing Trump. His hope lies in individual people eager to fight authoritarianism, who see ICE’s expanding power as the tip of the spear. “This is the moment when we need to build solidarity, love and power from the bottom up,” he said. I can’t think of a better holiday wish.

“Stranger Things” premiered in 2016 and immediately exploded. Created by Matt and Ross Duffer, the show’s infectious mix of homage and horror turned it into streaming TV’s first true megahit. For the youthful cast, sudden fame was its own kind of Upside Down, a place that resembled the real world but was disorienting and undeniably different.
“You’re seeing things that other people aren’t necessarily seeing, and the only people you’re sharing it with are these friends,” Finn Wolfhard, now 22, recalled recently.
The first part of the fifth and final season of “Stranger Things” is now streaming on Netflix. (More episodes will arrive on Christmas, the finale on New Year’s Eve.) In interviews, the young stars — all adults now, the oldest in their 30s — looked back on the show and how it shaped them.
Noah Schnapp as Will
“Season 1 dropped while I was at camp, and you couldn’t have any real contact with the outside world. I remember my mom sending letters telling me I just hit 10,000 Instagram followers and got a fan page, and just the awe of being a 10-year-old kid running to my friends, like: ‘Guys! I’m famous!’
“Amid all the chaos and the attention, the other cast members kept me grounded. I think if I’d been alone, I would be a disaster.”

ked in for the long haul.
“The other day a friend asked if I had ever been to Washington, and I was like, ‘Yeah, I met Obama.’ It was a different kind of childhood, but it was beautiful in its own unique way.
“We were living every day like it was our last, hugging and talking and spending more time together. Just making that effort. Filming past seasons, we took it for granted because you’re like, ‘See you next year!’ But we’re not going to see each other next year.”
Finn Wolfhard as Mike
“The show became so big overnight, and that was the most insane feeling. And the only people who can relate to that are the other actors.
“I saw a bunch of the cast in New York, and when I left it was this horrible feeling, like separation anxiety. There’s been this intense love and sense of belonging for so long. So that will be hard to get used to.”
Gaten Matarazzo as Dustin
“People who start acting when they’re very young, there’s a stigma about them losing their way or getting caught up in the muck of it all. I think we were able to rise above that.
“There were lots of tears, but there was security in knowing we’ll be friends for the rest of our lives. I don’t think you can spend this formative of a time with people and not be loc-
Caleb McLaughlin as Lucas
“There was a balance the Duffers gave us — even when we were on set, they allowed us to be kids. They allowed us to express and live in our full nature of adolescence.
“Though I understand why it’s ending, I never thought this day would come. I’m going to always be friends with everyone and have a relationship, but it won’t be the same.”
Maya Hawke as Robin
“I didn’t get over my new kid syndrome until Season 5. Then it was like in every joyful moment, the Abba song ‘Slipping Through My Fingers’ was playing in my head. So I had a really hard time.
“The thing that’s so beautiful is that this show is all about friendship, loyalty, bravery and togetherness, and that is also what I will take from it on a personal level.”
Charlie Heaton as Jonathan
“It became such a huge show, but each new season was like coming back to camp. All that noise quiets down and you’re back with these people making this thing, and it’s like family.
“Seeing the kids all turn into adults and individuals, I’m so proud of all of them. They’ve grown up in this spotlight, and they’re amazing. And they’re all doing it in their own way.”

Natalia Dyer as Nancy
“It started so small: It’s a town in the middle of nowhere with a monster. I had no idea I’d eventually be, like, filming in water tanks and doing all these crazy sequences.
“It’s all my 20s, so it really does feel like a chapter. Working on this show helped form who I am as an actor and a person.”
Joe Keery as Steve
“We’re bound by being in something that gained notoriety pretty much overnight, but it all happened to us together. So if there’s ever some weird experience, we’ve got this gang of people we can bring it to, to be a little support unit.
“You’re looking back at the whole 10-year period. You’re experiencing all these things for the last time, the last costume fitting or haircut, the last scene. Everything has a deeper meaning, and it’s impossible to escape the emotions. It’s the full spectrum.”
Sadie Sink as Max
“We would do night shoots and play hideand-seek in the pumpkin patch. Stuff like that sticks out, times when we were on this serious TV show set but still just kids at the end of the day.
“That last day was kind of surreal. It felt like I was grieving something. I was saying goodbye to childhood, in a way.”
U.S. equity funds witnessed their first weekly outflow in six weeks in the week through November 26, as concerns over lofty tech valuations prompted investors to take profits and overshadowed optimism about a possible Federal Reserve rate cut next month.
They divested a net $4.56 billion worth of U.S. equity funds in their first weekly net sales since October 15, LSEG Lipper data showed.
The S&P 500 has risen more than 3% so far this week on expectations of a Federal Reserve rate cut next month. But investors remain cautious as November has been marked by heightened volatility, driven by concerns over stretched tech valuations and the economic impact of a record 43-day U.S. government shutdown.
U.S. large-cap funds saw a net $144 million weekly outflow following five successive weeks of inflows. Investors also ditched mid-cap and small-cap funds worth a total of $1.69 billion and $885 million, respectively.
U.S. bond funds remained popular for an eighth straight week as these funds drew approximately $8.6 billion in weekly inflows.
Short-to-intermediate government and treasury funds secured $4.05 billion, the largest amount for a week since September 24. General domestic taxable fixed income funds also had a net $1.59 billion weekly inflow.
U.S. money market funds, meanwhile, received $25.28 billion worth of inflows after two successive weeks of net sales.
Global equity funds saw their first weekly outflow in 10 weeks in the week to November 26, as concerns about stretched valuations, particularly in the tech sector, outweighed optimism around expected U.S. interest rate cuts next month.
According to LSEG Lipper data, investors withdrew a net $4.48 billion from global equity funds as they registered their first weekly net sales since September 17.
In the most recent week, investors divested U.S. and European equity funds of $4.56 billion and $1.21 billion, respectively, but invested approximately $170.37 million in Asian equity funds.
Overall, global equities had a volatile November, with fears over stretched tech valuations and a record 43-day U.S. government shutdown weighing on sentiment.

“We continue to view AI as a market driver, but the sector will likely be assessed more selectively, and high valuations of many AI leaders carry disappointment risk,” said Vincenzo Vedda, chief investment officer at asset management firm DWS Group.
“For this reason, we remain broadly diversified and see gold as a relative hedge.”
Inflows in global bond funds, meanwhile, cooled to a 22-week low of $6.77 billion during the week.

$3.58 billion outflow, the first weekly net sales since July 9. Short-term bond funds, however, gained $5.56 billion in a fourth successive week of net purchases.
Investors added $2.54 billion worth of money market funds as they ended a two-week selling trend.
Gold and precious metals commodity funds, meanwhile, stayed popular for a seventh straight week as these funds drew roughly $1.66 billion in weekly inflows.
In emerging markets, investors snapped up $3.34 billion worth of equity funds, the most since July 9. They also added a marginal $5.98 million worth of bond funds, data for a combined 28,793 funds showed.

Shortly after takeoff from Istanbul after completing the first leg of his inaugural international trip, Pope Leo XIV said he had spoken with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey about serving as a “mediating voice” to help Israel and the occupied Palestinian territories negotiate a two-state solution.
“We all know that right now Israel does not accept this situation,” the pope said, speaking in Italian in response to a Turkish reporter’s question about the Vatican’s position on the conflicts in the Gaza Strip and Ukraine. Leo, noting that the Vatican is “also friends with Israel,” said a two-state solution was “the only solution” to “the conflict they continually live.” He added, “Turkey has an important role that it can play in this.”
The pope’s answer was in accordance with long-standing Vatican policy. The Vatican also has criticized Israel’s conduct during the war in Gaza. In October, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Holy See’s secretary of state, said Israel was conducting a “massacre” in Gaza as retribution for Hamas’ Oct. 7, 2023, attack on Israel. Parolin described those attacks as an “inhuman massacre.” After the Israeli government objected to Parolin’s comments, Leo said that the cardinal “expressed the Holy See’s opinion in this matter very well.”
Leo, who thanked Erdogan for the use of his personal helicopter, said on the plane that the Turkish leader had spent many months talking with the presidents of Russia and Ukraine to try to resolve the war in Ukraine. Leo said he hoped that, given Erdogan’s relationships with the leaders of Russia, Ukraine and the United States, which is trying to broker a ceasefire, the Turkish president could help “promote dialogue” that would lead to a ceasefire and ultimately an end to the war.

The pope spoke after spending three days in Turkey, meeting leaders of Catholic and Orthodox Christian churches as well as government officials. He traveled to Iznik, the site of ancient Nicaea, where he participated in an ecumenical service overlooking the ruins of the ancient Byzantine Basilica of Saint Neophytos. In Istanbul, he visited the Sultan Ahmed Mosque, also known as the Blue Mosque, and on Saturday evening, he presided over his first Mass outside Italy, at an
arena in Istanbul.
On the plane, Leo said that Turkey was a country where, although Christians are a very small minority, “people of different religions are able to live in peace.” Speaking in English, he described Turkey as an example of “what we all would be looking for throughout the world — that in spite of religious differences, in spite of ethnic differences, in spite of many other differences, people can indeed live in peace.”
As the plane descended toward Beirut for the start of the pope’s 2 1/2-day visit, reporters on board spotted fighter jets off both wings of the Airbus 320 that had been rented for the papal trip.
Soon after landing in Beirut, the pope visited the presidential palace, and Lebanon’s Catholic president, Joseph Aoun. Both men spoke at the palace to a gathering of government officials and diplomats.
Lebanon, the only Arab country with a Christian head of state, has a significant population of Christians and has been a bulwark for the Catholic church in the Middle East. Nonetheless, Lebanon’s Christians fear marginalization, in a country where sectarian divisions between Sunni Muslims, Shiite Muslims and Christians are a long-standing problem.
“We implore you to tell the world that we shall not die, nor leave, nor despair, nor surrender,” Aoun said, addressing the pope. “We will stay here, breathe freedom, invent joy, perfect love, cherish innovation, embrace modernity and create every day a life worth living.”
In his remarks, Leo encouraged the Lebanese to stay, despite economic, political and security concerns. “There are times when it is easier to flee, or simply more convenient to move elsewhere,” Leo said. “It takes real courage and foresight to stay or return to one’s own country, and to consider even somewhat difficult situations worthy of love and dedication.”
He acknowledged the violence and poverty that could drive young people in particular to emigrate, and the value of building a diaspora, but said that “we must not forget that remaining in our homeland and working day by day to develop a civilization of love and peace remains something very valuable.”

Israeli forces killed two children in the Gaza Strip in a strike Saturday, according to the family and a Palestinian health official, amid persistent violence in the territory despite an ongoing ceasefire.
Ahmed al-Farra, an official at Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis, which received their
bodies, said the two children had been killed in Bani Suheila, an eastern neighborhood of the city that is close to the so-called yellow line to which Israeli forces withdrew as part of the ceasefire.
The children’s father and uncle identified the two boys as a pair of brothers, Fadi and Juma Abu Assi, the older of whom was 10 years old.
They said the two had gone out to gather
wood, leaving their home on the outskirts of Khan Younis in southern Gaza, before being killed.
The Israeli military said forces had “identified two suspects” who crossed the ceasefire lines, “conducted suspicious activities on the ground” and posed a threat to nearby Israeli soldiers in southern Gaza.
The military did not comment on reports the two were children. “Following the iden-
tification, the air force, directed by forces on the ground, eliminated the suspects in order to remove the threat,” the military said in a statement.
Much about the episode remains unclear, including how the brothers might have wound up crossing the withdrawal line. In a separate incident Saturday, the Israeli military said its forces had also killed a militant in southern Gaza who crossed the yellow line.

Hong Kong residents lined up into the night Saturday to mourn near the site of a fire that killed at least 128 people and displaced thousands, as authorities began the weekslong work of combing through what remained of seven apartment towers.
Police said they expected the toll to rise in the coming days as they searched the buildings. In addition to the people who lost their lives in the city’s deadliest blaze in decades, at least 83 were injured, and 150 were still unaccounted for Saturday, according to authorities.
Three days of official mourning began Saturday. Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee and dozens of other government officials gathered in the morning to observe three minutes of silence. Flags across the city were lowered to half-staff, and officials have set up condolence books across Hong Kong’s 18 districts.
Near the site of the fire at Wang Fuk Court, in the northern district of Tai Po, makeshift memorials formed.
By sunset, more than 1,000 people from across the city lined up to leave flowers and handwritten messages in a park across the street from the housing complex.
At a nearby playground, mourners, many dressed in black, placed white roses on the ground and bowed toward the apartment block in the distance. Some left offerings of oranges, bananas, McDonald’s burgers and Kit Kat bars at makeshift altars to help feed the dead, a local practice.
Outside a community hall where family members were gathering to identify photographs of the dead, dozens of bouquets had been placed around a banyan tree. A sign there read: “128+ innocent people died. What did they do wrong?”
Eddie Chiang, a firefighter who said he had been part of a brigade that battled the blaze for 13 hours, returned to the complex Saturday night. He and his wife, Dana Wong, added a bouquet to a growing mound.
“Maybe I could have done more,” Chiang said. “I want them to know that they are going to a better place. The pain is over.”
Wong expressed some of the anger that many have been feeling as police and anticorruption officials investigate what hap-
pened. Eight people have been arrested in an anti-corruption bureau investigation, and three by police on accusations of gross negligence and manslaughter in connection to a contractor that was renovating the buildings.
“This didn’t have to happen,” she said. “It’s a tragedy for the whole of Hong Kong.”
Iris Cheng and Toby Law, who were with their school-age daughter Alva to pay their respects, were among those who lingered after the crowd dissipated, staring up at the blackened towers.
“We realize there’s nothing we can do to help,” Cheng said. “We wanted to deliver flowers so the dead can rest in peace.”
The fires have prompted an outpouring of support, and people have arrived in Tai Po in droves to manage donation stations. On Saturday, police cleared a large area where volunteers had set up. The government later said that it had been overwhelmed by donations and urged people to stop taking items to the area.
While police said Saturday that they had finished searching two of the buildings that burned, they estimated the rest would take three or four weeks. Lam Man-han, the assistant commissioner of police, said in a news conference that the two buildings were among the least affected and that the search conditions remained challenging. Many apartments were badly damaged and flooded, she said.
Many survivors of the fire, which tore through all but one of the eight towers in Wang Fuk Court, have dispersed around the city to temporary accommodation in hotels and hostels.
Yu Siu Yuen returned to Tai Po on Saturday to register for government services at a secondary school, where displaced residents poured in throughout the day. The government has begun disbursing the equivalent of around $1,300 in subsidies for affected families.
Yu wore the same navy blue dress and black flats that she wore to work Wednesday, the day the fire broke out, and carried her 12-year-old miniature poodle, Longjing, in a sling.
Pointing to her blistered feet, she said she badly needed to buy new clothes and shoes. She added that she was slowly coming to terms with the fact that she might never return to her home or live in her neighborhood

again.
Wang Fuk Court was built in 1983 as part of a program to help middle-income residents purchase subsidized homes. Yu’s husband bought their apartment in the 1980s, and she lived there with him for more than 20 years.
“I’ve never seen him cry,” she said of her husband. “Last night, he held me and cried throughout the whole night.”

Even at a time of inflation, tariff concerns and economic uncertainty, Americans opened their wallets on Black Friday, chasing deep discounts and stretching their budgets where they could.
Data released Saturday showed that shoppers seized on Thanksgiving and Black Friday deals, spending significantly more than last year online and slightly more in stores, though they grew more selective about what they put in their carts.
Shoppers made an estimated $11.8 billion in online purchases Friday, a 9.1% increase from last year, and spent $6.4 billion online on Thanksgiving, according to data from Adobe Analytics, a data collection and analysis platform.
Another metric from Mastercard SpendingPulse, which measures retail sales across cash, credit cards and digital payments, found that online sales on Black Friday rose by 10.4% and in-store sales increased 1.7% over last year. Apparel and jewelry were among the top spending categories, as retailers promoted steep discounts.
“Despite questions about its relevance due to the prolonged, monthlong promotional season, Black Friday remains the most significant shopping day of the holiday season,” said Chip West, retail and consumer behavior expert at RR Donnelley, a communications company.
Economists are looking at this year’s holiday sales as an indicator of how the economy is doing amid economic challenges: the longest government shutdown, changes to Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits and a weakening job market. Despite the strong Black Friday sales this year, analysts say that may not reflect how retailers will perform overall this holiday season.
The numbers released Saturday offer an early look at how the holiday shopping season is shaping up. The National Retail Federation is set to update its figures Tuesday.
The holiday season, which stretches through November and December, has arrived as many households are feeling squeezed. Consumer confidence has wavered as prices remain elevated and incomes show signs of flattening, all while some businesses grapple with the added strain of tariffs.

families, its CEO, Doug McMillon, said on a call with analysts earlier this month. And wealthier households, buoyed by rising financial markets, are expected to keep spending briskly, helping to offset a slowdown among lower-income shoppers. According to Moody’s Analytics, the top 10% of households now account for nearly half of all U.S. consumer spending.
Analysts also say shopping assisted by artificial intelligence played a big role. Retailers including Target, Shopify and Walmart partnered with OpenAI before the holidays, making it easier for consumers to search for deals or generate product suggestions. Salesforce reported that traffic from third-party AI agents jumped more than 300% during Black Friday over last year, both in the United States and abroad.
Vivek Pandya, Adobe’s director of digital insights, said the use of generative AI helped deliver “higher-than-expected” overall spending on Thanksgiving.
The most recent federal data showed retail sales rose a modest 0.2% from August to September, missing expectations, though sales were still up 4.2% from a year earlier.
And while retailers’ sales numbers have improved, shoppers were selective in their Black Friday purchases. According to realtime data from Shopify, a provider of software to retail businesses, the top product categories by volume among its clients Friday included vitamins, T-shirts and skin care items.
Benefiting most were discount retailers, which saw “good traffic” and shoppers “leaving with one or two large bags,” said Katherine Black, a partner in the consumer practice of global management consulting firm Kearney. Chains like TJX Cos., Burlington Stores and Ross Stores were poised for a robust season as bargain-minded shoppers trade down from high-priced goods, according to Placer. ai, an analytics firm.
“Value continues to be the centerpiece of the holiday season,” said Brian McCarthy, principal and retail strategy leader at Deloitte Consulting. “Black Friday-Cyber Monday promotions are an easy way for shoppers to capture those deals.”
The National Retail Federation said this month that it expected holiday sales to rise 3.7% to 4.2% over last year and predicted sales would reach as much as $1.02 trillion. Deloitte also forecast that holiday retail sales would top $1 trillion. Retailers selling discretionary or luxury items, such as Best Buy and Williams-Sonoma, have posted an increase in revenue in recent quarters, suggesting that some consumers will still splurge on big-ticket gifts. But chains focused on essentials and lower-priced goods continue to outperform.
Take Walmart. Revenue for the quarter that ended in October jumped 6% from last year, prompting the company to raise its sales outlook. Target, however, moved in the opposite direction: Sales slipped 1.5%, missing expectations as shoppers pulled back on some discretionary items.
Walmart, which is temporarily offering discounts on about 7,400 items, more than half of them in the grocery aisles, is seeing increased traffic from higher-income
Over the past decade, Black Friday has evolved from a single frenzied day of in-store chaos into a weekslong blitz of digital promotions. Slightly more shoppers returned to brick and mortar stores than last year — drawn in part by giveaways from chains like Target and Lowe’s. Videos shared on social platforms showed long lines and a sense of nostalgia among customers happy to revive the old-school Black Friday ritual.
“Retailers seem to have had a successful start to the season, but there are still 28 days to Christmas, and the season is rarely won on Black Friday and Cyber Monday,” said Michael Brown, a partner and Americas retail leader in the consumer practice at Kearney. “Retailers will need to continue to entice the customer to keep shopping without eroding slimmer margins due to tariffs.”

The Trump administration is casting more doubt on the safety of vaccines, with an internal memo from the Food and Drug Administration linking the deaths of at least 10 children to the COVID vaccine and proposing new regulatory measures as a result.
The memo was obtained by The New York Times and not publicly released. It did not provide details such as the ages of the children, whether they had any health problems or how the agency determined the vaccine-death link. Nor did it disclose the maker of the vaccines involved.
The findings have not been published in a peer-reviewed medical journal, drawing suspicion from some critics of Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who has repeatedly criticized the COVID shots as deadly despite the scientific consensus that they are safe.
The memo was written by Dr. Vinay Prasad, the director of the FDA’s vaccine division. He sent it to agency staff members Friday, outlining findings from a review of reports concerning childhood deaths and attributing them to myocarditis, or inflammation of the heart muscle.
The COVID vaccine, like many other immunizations, carries some health risks in certain cases, and mainstream scientists have been studying the vaccine’s effects on people for years, especially the incidence of myocarditis in teenage boys and young men.
“This is a profound revelation,” Prasad
wrote in a memo to staff members. “For the first time, the U.S. FDA will acknowledge that COVID-19 vaccines have killed American children.”
Prasad said he would propose a range of new oversight and review of vaccines, though it was unclear whether the White House had been advised of the memo’s contents. The proposals could be refined by government officials or challenged by lawmakers and drug companies.
A spokesperson for the Department of Health and Human Services, which oversees the FDA, did not respond to a request for comment.
The memo represents another escalation of broadsides on vaccines by federal authorities under Kennedy, who has used his position as secretary to repeatedly raise doubts about inoculations and name other skeptics to positions of authority.
Kennedy’s team has issued new policies that are limiting access to the COVID shots to people 65 and older as well as to younger people with underlying medical conditions. He and FDA officials have also called for more studies of existing vaccines that have been considered safe for decades.
Health officials in the first Trump administration, when the vaccines were developed during the pandemic, and in the Biden years, strongly endorsed the COVID shots as lifesaving measures. Public health experts have pointed to the number of lives saved by the COVID vaccine and to the fact that the virus caused more than 1 million deaths among
Americans. About 2,100 children have died of COVID since the pandemic began, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics.
Prasad’s memo is landing just before next week’s meeting of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s influential vaccine committee. Kennedy’s handpicked panel includes supporters of the so-called medical freedom community, who often reject vaccination and oppose mandates. The committee is expected to discuss the children’s immunization schedule and the hepatitis B vaccine for newborns.
Michael Osterholm, a critic of Kennedy’s health agency oversight and an infectious disease expert at the University of Minnesota, said he believed the memo was intentionally released before the meeting.

A mother holds her 8-month-old while a COVID-19 vaccine is administered in Hatfield, Pa., June 30, 2022. Dr. Vinay Prasad, director of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), said in a staff memo on Friday, Nov. 28, 2025, that a review spearheaded by vaccine skeptic Dr. Tracy Beth Høeg found that at least 10 children in the U.S. died “after and because of” getting a COVID-19 vaccination. (Hannah Beier/The New York Times)
“This is an irresponsible way to deal with a very critical public health issue like vaccination and adverse events,” he said.
Among the changes Prasad outlined for oversight and approval were requirements that studies looking at people using a vaccine or a placebo include all subgroups, such as pregnant women. In addition, he described the annual process of updating flu vaccines to match a circulating strain a “catastrophe of low-quality evidence,” and said it would also be reexamined. (The chosen strain is at times a poor match.)
He also said companies would need to do larger studies before promoting vaccines as safe to administer together, such as the flu and COVID vaccines. And vaccine makers would need to conduct large, randomized studies of pneumonia vaccines to prove that they reduce cases of the disease rather than prove that they generate antibodies.
The changes would most likely raise costs for vaccine makers, which submit studies of their products to the FDA for review and ap-
proval decisions. Public health experts also warn that high-profile pronouncements suggesting that vaccines are not safe will erode confidence as measles and whooping cough cases are soaring in the United States.
Dr. Paul Offit, a vaccine expert with the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and a critic of Kennedy’s vaccine policies, called the memo an example of science “by press release.”
He said it was missing context such as the number of deaths from the virus itself among vaccinated and unvaccinated children.
The vaccine letter followed Prasad’s recent missive exhorting staff members to refrain from publishing “obviously erroneous work” instead of studies that further the agency’s mission.
Prasad, whose leadership style has rankled some people inside and outside the agency, complained in the latest memo of staff members who disagreed with the vaccine division’s direction and new policies, saying they were leaking information. He then outlined how employees could submit their resignations.

After scouring a beach in the harbor all morning in Rotterdam, Netherlands, a retired Dutch engineer, Cock van den Berg, had finally found something interesting: a polished black stone about the size of an acorn with two punctures, like finger holes in a bowling ball.
He held it out in the palm of his hand to show Dick Mol, an expert on ice age fossils.
“What do you think?” he asked. “Is it a mammoth tooth?”
Mol examined it for about 30 seconds and decided it was not. It was a molar from a prehistoric rhinoceros, he said.
“It’s from a forest rhino,” he added, dating to “the time that hippos and straight-tusked elephants were living here,” about 126,000 to 116,000 years ago.
Van den Berg is what Dutch scientists like to call a “citizen paleontologist,” one of a cadre of enthusiastic scavengers who come to this 8-square-mile stretch of white sand beach dotted with wind turbines, to hunt for ice age fossils.
They arrive during the day, or show up in the evening after low tide with flashlights, to check the wet sand as the sea recedes.
The port of Rotterdam, the largest harbor in Europe, might not be the kind of place one would expect to find clues to the Pleistocene Era. But as it happens, the human-made beaches that surround the harbor are considered key locations for finding remains of woolly mammoths, woolly rhinos and other giant creatures that roamed here many thousands to millions of years ago.
The beach where van den Berg was hunting, called Maasvlakte 2, is a particularly popular destination for fossil seekers, because it was built using sediments dredged from the North Sea floor. From about 2.5 million to 11,700 years ago, the area that is now underwater was a mammoth steppe of grassy hills, flatlands, valleys and streams on a prehistoric landmass called Doggerland.
“You could walk from here to London,” explained Mol, standing beneath a slowly whooshing turbine. “But be careful, because there are hyenas and saber-tooth cats.”
Some 30 or 40 species of impressively large creatures, known as megafauna, lived on the steppe during the colder stretches, including giant horses, giant bison and even deer that could grow to 8 feet tall.
Today, the beach contains their bones, dating back tens of thousands to millions of years. Under Dutch law, beach combers who find
fossils on Maasvlakte 2 are not required to report or submit them. They can take their finds home if they like, but they are encouraged to promote scientific research by voluntarily registering them with the Naturalis Biodiversity Center, a national natural history museum and research center in the city of Leiden.
Using a website built by the port of Rotterdam authority and managed by Naturalis, amateur paleontologists can submit a photo and the GPS location of the find so that experts can help them identify it.
“In other countries, like Germany, fossils or anything related to paleontology are protected by the state, but that’s not the case in the Netherlands,” explained Isaak Eijkelboom, a doctoral student in paleontology at Naturalis who studies fossils found at Maasvlakte 2 and other locations.
But since trophy hunters don’t have to worry about losing their finds, he thinks they’re more likely to share their discoveries with the museum and collaborate with scientists.
“It allows us to practice citizen science,” Eijkelboom said.
For more than a decade, Naturalis has been using volunteers to gather information for its fossil database, which now lists more than 23,000 finds, he said.
“This is only possible because it’s so open, and so free,” Eijkelboom said. “In other places, when people find fossils, they end up in their closets and the knowledge is hidden away.”
Van den Berg, who discovered the rhinoceros molar, said he was excited to share it with Naturalis. A few years ago, he found a jaw part from a macaque monkey at Maasvlakte 2 and donated it to the National History Museum in Rotterdam. The rare specimen, which scientists dated to 125,000 years ago, was described in three scientific papers, Mol said.
This time, van den Berg said, he would share information about his discovery with scientists but keep the tooth for himself.
Mol joked that the “biggest mistake of van den Berg’s life” was donating the monkey jaw to the museum and not to Mol’s “Mammoth Lab” at Historyland, a museum and theme park that he helped establish in the town of Hellevoetsluis, about a 15-minute drive from the beach.
There, Mol, a retired airport customs official, has his own impressive collection of 55,000 ice age fossils. An autodidact who never attended university, Mol is nonetheless widely recognized as an international expert; in 2000, he was knighted in the Netherlands for his significant contributions to paleontology, and he was featured in Discovery Channel documentaries such as “Raising the Mammoth” and “Land
of the Mammoth.”
These days, he uses his fossils to teach schoolchildren about the ice age, and helps conceive of museum displays. The latest is lifesize replica of a southern mammoth, about 13 feet tall, a non-woolly species that migrated from Africa to Doggerland and lived for 1.5 million years in what is now Northern Europe. Mol explained that the southern mammoth was an evolutionary predecessor of the steppe mammoth and eventually the woolly mammoth, the ice-age icon. In Doggerland, they began to die out tens of thousands years ago, Mol said, as the climate there became inhospitable. Then, about 11,700 years ago, he added, the average annual temperature increased substantially, causing glaciers to melt and rising seas to inundate the mammoth steppe.
Fossils of Pleistocene creatures from this era remained submerged, untouched, for eight millenniums. Then, in the 1950s, Dutch fishers started trawling the North Sea floor for bottomfeeding fish, like haddock and sole, and kept finding giant fossilized bones in their nets.
Twenty years later, after an extension of the Rotterdam port, beach combers found lots of fossils from the early Holocene era, the period after the Pleistocene, from about 11,700 years ago until about 9,000 years ago.
One local retiree who liked to stroll on the beach, Niek Kerkhoff, amassed thousands of Holocene fossils that he bequeathed to Naturalis upon his death in 1994. The Kerkhoff Collection represents a small part of the 30,000 to 40,000 specimens that make up Naturalis’ collection, one of the largest troves of ice age mammals anywhere, according to David
Douw, a collection manager at the museum.
Without citizen scientists like Kerkhoff, van der Berg and Mol, said Frank Wesselink, a senior researcher of paleontology at Naturalis, the museum and researchers like Eijkelboom would not have the capacity to collect so many specimens.
By collaborating with the public, he added, “both you learn, and we learn.”
On Maasvlakte 2, Piet Heezen and his three children had driven about an hour from the city of Breda to learn. One of his daughters Tatum, 7, collected a large bag of pretty seashells, and his son, Mees, 4, played in the sand while daughter Charlie Heezen, 8, showed Eijkelboom a small black triangular object she’d found.
He gave it a closer look and said it was likely a 10,000-year-old shark’s tooth.
Piet Heezen was impressed. “Now that we know what we’re finding, we’ll come next time with a guide,” he said.
In spite of a steady stream of beachcombers, Eijkelboom said there will still be plenty more fossils to find for a long time to come.
“In general, in paleontology, a lot of people say we’ve only discovered the tip of the iceberg,” he said. Rising sea levels will require continued fortifications of the Dutch coastline, using North Sea sand deposits for quite some time to come, he added.
Although it is unfortunate that such action is needed to prevent humans from going extinct like the mammoth, he said, “at least there will be more and more beaches where we can hunt for ice age fossils.”

The Mayagüez Indians, Santurce Crabbers and Caguas Criollos won their respective games Saturday night in Roberto Clemente Professional Baseball League play.
A four-run rally in the third inning gave host Mayagüez a 4-3 win over the Ponce Lions.
The Indians’ (Indios’) productive inning ended the Lions’ (Leones’) defensive scoreless innings streak at 32. Ponce fell to 10-6, but kept hold on second place in the league (LBPRC by its initials in Spanish) standings. The Indians, meanwhile, improved to 8-8 and moved into third place.
The key in the Indians’ fourth was two singles by Jalen Miller and Eddie Rosario, and a double by Emanuel Rivera. Powered
by those hits, Mayagüez rallied for a 4-3 lead against Japanese starter Kazuto Taguchi.
The Lions scored their three runs in the first inning, taking advantage of the wildness of Indians starter Jorge López. With the bases loaded, López first walked Antony Calarco and then hit William Simoneit with a pitch. It was the second hit batter of the inning, as the right-hander had also hit Alex Dickerson after giving up hits to Dalton Guthrie and Jesmuel Valentín. Later, D’Shawn Knowles hit a sacrifice fly to give Ponce a 3-0 lead.
Left-hander Taguchi (2-2) was charged with the loss, pitching three and a third innings. Meanwhile, right-hander Lucas Vega earned his second win of the season, allowing only one hit in three and a third innings. Reliever Carlos Francisco recorded his second save of the season.
Elsewhere, the Crabbers (Cangrejeros) scored four runs in the 11th inning to secure a 6-3 victory at Hiram Bithorn Stadium in Hato Rey.
With the score tied 1-1, the tiebreaker rule for the regular season was activated. Under the rule, a runner is placed on second base for both teams at the start of each inning, with no outs, if the score remains tied at the end of the ninth inning.
Both teams scored runs to tie the game again in the 10th. Santurce scored on a sacrifice fly by Jack López, and San Juan scored on a single by Yariel González.
However, the Santurce offense got after right-hander Raúl Rivera in the top of the 11th. Roy Morales and Rubén Castro hit singles to drive in Henry Ramos, making it 3-2.
Shed Long Jr. followed with another single, and Bryan Rey hit a sacrifice fly to left field, bringing in another run for the Crabbers. Two at-bats later, López sealed the victory by driving in two more runs, making it 6-2.
A single by Delvin Pérez gave the Senators (Senadores) their third run of the game in their half of the 11th.
The Crabbers struck first in the fifth in a game marked to that point by solid pitching. With one out, Brian Navarreto drew a walk off Senators starter Rubén Ramírez, and López drove him in with a single to right field, making it 1-0.
Santurce’s lead was short-lived. In the top of the sixth, with two outs, reliever Miguel Mejía loaded the bases and allowed the tying run while allowing two walks in the frame.
Left-hander Jordan Morales (3-0) earned
the win, allowing one run in one inning. Rivera (2-1) took the loss, surrendering five runs in two innings.
Santurce secured their 12th win of the season in their first 16 games, maintaining their lead in the tournament. San Juan fell to last place with a 5-11 record.
Finally, outfielder Bryan Torres homered and drove in two runs to lead the Criollos to a 6-1 victory over the Carolina Giants at Yldefonso Solá Morales Stadium in Caguas.
It was the sixth consecutive loss for the Giants (Gigantes), who dropped to fifth place in the LBPRC with a 7-9 record. Behind them are the Criollos at 6-10.
A solo home run by Bryan Torres to right field opened the scoring, putting Caguas up 1-0 in the first inning. The Giants tied the game in the third when Johnathan Rodríguez drove in a run with a powerful line drive to center field.
The Criollos regained the lead in the sixth inning after Giants pitcher Ángel Reyes walked Vimael Machín and threw a wild pitch, making the score 3-1. The Criollos added two more runs on a passed ball by catcher Alan Espinal and a groundout by Elijah Dunham, making it 5-1.
Torres doubled in another run for Caguas in the seventh inning.
The win went to Luke Taggart (3-0) after he pitched one and two-thirds scoreless innings, allowing two hits and striking out three. Left-hander R.J. Martínez (1-2) took the loss for Carolina after surrendering three runs in his five and one-third innings of work.
