GOOD MORNING

3

The San Juan Daily Star, the only paper with News Service in English in Puerto Rico, publishes 7 days a week, with a Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday edition, along with a Weekend Edition to cover Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

FLMM is first nonprofit of its kind to operate 100% on solar

The Luis Muñoz Marín Foundation (FLMM by its initials in Spanish) this week announced the installation of a system of 415 solar panels that now supplies 100% of the electricity the institution requires for its operations.

With the project, the FLMM becomes the first nonprofit organization -- with an educational, cultural and ecological mission, and custodian of the most important historical archive of Puerto Rico’s contemporary history -- to fully replace traditional electric power with renewable energy.

The new photovoltaic system enables all Foundation facilities -- including its archive areas, exhibition spaces, educational programs, and outdoor grounds -- to operate entirely on solar energy, thereby aligning its daily operations with the environmental philosophy it has promoted for decades.

“With this important step, the Luis Muñoz Marín Foundation brings its ecological philosophy of conservation and environmental stewardship beyond words and into action,” FLMM Executive Director Javier Alemán said. “The FLMM has transformed itself into a green energy institution, adopting forward-looking environmental practices that we implement responsibly for the good of nature and humanity.”

The renewable energy project builds upon the organization’s longstanding commitment to ecological awareness, which is also represented through Parque Doña Inés, its botanical and ecological garden.

From this space, the Foundation promotes the conservation of flora and fauna, environmental education, and the responsible enjoyment of nature, integrating students, families, and communities into experiences that foster greater respect for the environment and sustainability.

“With this initiative, the Foundation strengthens its commitment to preserving both Puerto Rico’s historic documentary heritage and the natural environment that surrounds it, reaffirming that environmental protection is an integral part of its mission,” Alemán added.

Puerto Rico Lottery unveils commemorative ticket for Orocovis Bicentennial

Puerto Rico Lottery Bureau Assistant Secretary Heidi Hernández Olivo presented a commemorative ticket on Wednesday celebrating the Orocovis Bicentennial as part of the municipality’s 200th anniversary festivities. During the visit, Hernández Olivo delivered the commemorative ticket to Mayor Jesús E. Colón Berlin-

geri, first lady Liza M. Otero, their son Sebastián Colón, Municipal Legislature leader Antonio Meléndez Vargas, and artists Reniet Ramírez and Fransela Burgos, who created the official artwork for the Bicentennial. Each received the ticket in recognition of their contributions to the celebration and to the cultural development of the municipality.

Hernández Olivo emphasized the symbolic importance of the special project for the Traditional Lottery.

“The Bicentennial of Orocovis represents two centuries of effort, identity, and pride for this community,” she said. “For us at the Lottery, it is an honor to commemorate this occasion with a ticket that reflects the history, culture, and essence of this municipality.”

Colón Berlingeri expressed his gratitude and emphasized the significance of the recognition for the community.

“The Bicentennial commemorative ticket is a tribute to our people and our history,” he said. “We thank the Traditional Lottery for joining this celebration and acknowledging the value of our beautiful town of Orocovis.”

The artists also shared their excitement at seeing their work circulated throughout Puerto Rico, noting that the design highlights key elements of Orocovis’ heritage and will serve as a lasting historical memento.

San Juan launches ‘Kitchen on Wheels’ to assist vulnerable communities

San Juan Mayor Miguel Romero Lugo has launched Cocina Sobre Ruedas (Kitchen on Wheels), a mobile kitchen service designed to deliver hot meals to low-income communities previously identified under the Special Communities law.

The unit also strengthens the municipality’s emergency response framework, complementing the 13 existing community kitchens.

“The well-being of our people will always be a priority. With Cocina Sobre Ruedas, we expand our ability to reach those who need it most,” Romero Lugo said earlier this week. “This initiative blends solidarity, action, and a genuine commitment to the health and quality of life of our citizens. In emergencies or in ordinary times, San Juan shows up.”

On its inaugural day Tuesday, starting at the Parcelas Falú Indoor Court, the initiative reached some 81 locations -- including elderly housing complexes, communities, and neighborhoods -- through the preparation and distribution of 9,000 hot meals from the Roberto Clemente Sports Complex kitchens. This first phase will serve roughly 30 pre-identified communities. In the event of a municipal, state, or federal emergency declaration, the mobile kitchen will be activated immediately as direct support for affected families.

The program aims to address food insecurity affecting thousands of residents in the capital city. Low-income communities, in particular, face significant disparities in access to nutritious food. Cocina Sobre Ruedas strengthens the municipality’s community support network and forms part of its broader strategy for social equity.

Francine Sánchez Marcano, director of San Juan’s De-

partment for Community Social Development, highlighted the project’s impact.

“This initiative represents dignity for our communities,” she said. “Access to food should not be a privilege, and with this effort we ensure that every family has access to a hot meal -- even during times of vulnerability. It is a concrete action that strengthens San Juan’s social fabric.”

The program’s operations are supported by over $72,000 in Community Services Block Grant funds and $54,000 in general municipal funds, for a total of nearly $126,000 allocated to supplies and logistics. Distribution routes continued throughout the day, operating in both morning and afternoon shifts, concluding with the inaugural activity held at the Parcelas Falú Indoor Court.

Food distribution efforts are being reinforced by staff and resources from multiple municipal agencies, including the Office for the Integral Development of Women, the Office of Planning and Territorial Management, the Municipal Secretariat, Police and Public Safety Department, Emergency Management, Environmental Compliance, Human Resources, the Integrated Municipal Education System, Citizen Services, Recreation and Sports, Municipal Housing, Arts and Culture, and Operations and Maintenance.

“This initiative is only the beginning of a broader effort to strengthen San Juan’s social infrastructure,” Romero Lugo said. “We are building a city that is more prepared, more supportive, and more equitable. Cocina Sobre Ruedas will become a cornerstone of our community response and an essential resource in times of need.”

Moca adopts artificial intelligence to accelerate reconstruction efforts

The Municipality of Moca announced midweek the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) tools and advanced technological solutions to strengthen the management, execution, and compliance of reconstruction projects funded with federal dollars in the aftermath of Hurricanes Irma, María, and Fiona. The initiative marks a turning point in the municipality’s recovery process, said Efraín Barreto, mayor of Moca.

Through a strategy centered on organization, compliance, and modernization of workflows, Moca has made steady progress, reaching a current reconstruction portfolio of $51,769,004—an increase of more than $6 million. These funds are distributed across 101 projects in various areas of the municipality, including road infrastructure, public facilities,

community improvements, and essential systems.

Mayor Barreto emphasized that the integration of technology responds to the need to transform how projects are managed and

how federal funds are administered. “When we took office, we found a municipality with a recovery rate of 20.4%—practically paralyzed and among the lowest in Puerto Rico. Today, we can say with certainty that Moca is moving forward. The implementation of artificial intelligence and technological platforms will allow us to accelerate these processes and ensure that every project strictly complies with federal and state requirements.”

The adoption of these tools will enable more precise monitoring of project progress, improved coordination among municipal departments, and greater efficiency in collecting, validating, and organizing documentation required for audits and reimbursement requests before FEMA and COR3. The effort is particularly significant amid federal uncertainty, where changes in guidelines, review processes, and disbursement flows demand stronger planning,

oversight, and internal controls.

“We are committed to restoring confidence among our residents and the private sector. This is not only about rebuilding—it’s about doing so with order, transparency, and longterm vision. This technology helps us minimize errors, reduce delays, and safeguard every dollar allocated to Moca’s recovery,” Barreto added.

The Municipality also acknowledged the challenges posed by failed bidding processes and limited participation from the contractor market, noting that this modernization aims to establish a more reliable and predictable environment for vendors and companies interested in working with Moca. “We want contractors to see Moca as an organized municipality with clear processes and the necessary support to execute projects. We are working to build trust and ensure that every project has a viable path to completion,” the mayor concluded.

Camuy, ombudsman for the elderly join forces for seniors

Camuy Mayor Gabriel “Gaby” Hernández Rodríguez announced this week that the municipality has strengthened services for senior citizens by distributing 413 vouchers worth $100 each for shopping, as well as acquiring three vehicles to expand daily transportation services offered at care centers.

The efforts were carried out through the Office of the Ombudsman for the Elderly (OPEA by its initials in Spanish).

“We are strengthening services for our senior citizens with concrete resources that improve their quality of life,” the mayor said. “The distribution of shopping vouchers and the arrival of new transportation units are part of a municipal plan to support our senior citizens, ensure their mobility, and facilitate their access to essential services.”

“The support we offer our senior citizens must be felt and

seen through specific actions,” Hernández Rodríguez added.

“The vouchers alleviate household expenses, and the new transportation units allow us to expand daily routes and better

respond to their needs. This initiative strengthens the programs already operating in our communities and ensures consistent services for those who depend on them.”

The vouchers, representing a municipal and state investment of $41,300, were distributed to Camuy residents over 60 years of age. During the event, a Services Fair was also held, with the participation of the commonwealth Mental Health and Anti-Addiction Services Administration, the Quebrada Savings and Credit Cooperative, the departments of Housing and Family, Mark Ministry, MCS Classicare and Camuy Health Services, among other entities that offered guidance, health services and emotional support.

The mayor noted that the new vehicles were delivered following an investment of $173,554. They will allow safe transport to medical appointments, recreational activities, educational workshops and wellness programs.

House recognizes central region artists who preserve island culture, traditions

In a gesture of commitment to culture and all the artists who keep traditions alive, District 28 (Naranjito, Corozal, Comerío and Barranquitas) Rep. Axel “Chino” Roque Gracia paid tribute to the talent and cultural contributions of more than a dozen artists from the island’s central region during a ceremony held in the House of Representatives.

The event took place as part of Puerto Rican Heritage and Culture Week, with the aim of recognizing the talent, work and dedication of those who continue to preserve the identity of all Puerto Ricans.

“We celebrate the great artists from the heart of our island,” said the legislator, who comes from a family with ties to the trova tradition. “Each of them contributes to the preservation

of our culture with their talent and dedication. It is an honor to recognize and congratulate them.”

Roque Gracia, who also chairs the Tourism Committee in the lower chamber, highlighted the region’s rich cultural heritage, calling it “the Capital of Puerto Rican Culture.” He emphasized trova music, art, and all the artistic expressions that keep alive the roots that distinguish Puerto Rico.

“These artists are cultural stewards; with their talent, they tell stories because their work keeps our identity alive and, therefore, deserves to be recognized,” Roque Gracia said. “You are the ones who inspire new generations to continue this legacy, to preserve and promote who we are both at the state and international levels.”

More than a dozen artists -- including artisans, painters, trova singers, musicians, woodcarvers and a sun artisan -- were

recognized along with their families for their contributions to the island’s cultural development. The recognition ceremony culminated in a performance that showcased the richness of Puerto Rican folklore.

Groundbreaking STEM initiative empowers students to explore cutting-edge technology

In a pioneering effort to bring advanced scientific tools into Puerto Rico’s classrooms, the NSF Arecibo Center for STEM Education, Computational Skills, and Community Engagement (Arecibo C3), with support from the National Science Foundation, has launched Barcode Puerto Rico. The new initiative offers high school students hands-on experience with DNA barcoding—the same technology used in leading research laboratories around the world. The program will train fifteen teachers in 2025 and enroll its first cohort of students for the 2025–2026 academic year.

Barcode Puerto Rico places high-level scientific technology directly in the hands of students who might otherwise lack access to it. Through DNA barcoding—a method that examines genetic sequences to identify species—students take on active roles in biodiversity research.

“Modeled after the Barcode Long Island initiative and adapted to Puerto Rico’s unique ecosystems and communities, the program launched this fall with two intensive workshops for teachers from eleven schools across the island. Under the guidance of trained educators and mentors, more than sixty high school students will design and conduct their own biodiversity research projects—such as studying plant life and documenting species on school grounds—generating real DNA sequences that contribute to global biodiversity databases used by scientists and conservationists,” stated Jason Williams, Arecibo C3 project leader and principal investigator at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory in New York.

Throughout the academic year, teachers will support students through all stages of the scientific process—from writing proposals and collecting samples to extracting DNA and analyzing sequences using bioinformatics tools. Educators will meet monthly with mentors from Arecibo C3 to resolve

challenges and maintain momentum.

“Their findings will be presented at a Student Research Symposium in Spring 2026 at the Arecibo C3 STEM Center, where students will share their discoveries with scientists, families, and the community,” added Williams.

“Most of these students have never set foot in a biotechnology lab. When they realize they are doing the same kind of research happening inside universities, their vision of what’s possible for their future completely expands,” said Williams.

Located at the historic Arecibo Observatory, Arecibo C3 brings world-class science to Puerto Rico. Led by the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras Campus; the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC); and Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL) in New York, the center strengthens the island’s STEM ecosystem through programming focused on education, workforce development, and community engagement.

The recognition ceremony culminated in a performance that showcased the richness of Puerto Rican folklore.

At a congressional hearing, residents detail the trauma of the LA raids

For about four hours, they described the toll of federal raids on Southern California. They spoke of masked agents tackling immigrants in the country illegally and U.S. citizens, of being denied food, water and phone calls to relatives while in custody.

One woman fought back tears as she recounted not having seen her husband since he was detained on June 21 after leaving a laundromat. One man described vomiting blood after contracting an illness at a detention center.

At a congressional hearing in Los Angeles earlier this week, more than two dozen people testified to lawmakers about the fear and upheaval gripping Southern California immigrant communities after months of federal raids led by Border Patrol and Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents.

The testimony came from men and women whose loved ones had been arrested or who had been detained themselves. Some had witnessed immigration arrests, and still others were local elected officials who described agents whose actions, they said, went outside the law.

“This is not public safety,” said Rex Richardson, the mayor of Long Beach. “This is racial profiling. This is abuse of power.”

Democratic members of Congress organized the hearing at the urging of Karen Bass, the mayor of Los Angeles and a former member of Congress, as part of their push to investigate reports of misconduct by federal immigration agents. Other hearings are expected to be held in other cities. The session Monday drew lawmakers from California and across the country, including Reps. Jasmine Crockett of Texas and Maxine Waters of California.

Rep. Robert Garcia, D-Calif., who is the ranking member of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, said

the message to the Trump administration was simply, “We are watching you.”

The Department of Homeland of Security did not immediately respond to a request for comment about the hearing. No representatives of the Trump administration attended the session.

Federal immigration officials have defended the crackdown, saying that they have been conducting targeted operations aimed at immigrants without permanent legal status who have violent criminal records. They have also said that if agents come across other immigrants in the U.S. illegally, even those without criminal records, then they may also be detained during the operations. Since the raids began June 6, about 9,000 immigrants have been arrested in the Los Angeles area by ICE or Border Patrol agents, according to the

Department of Homeland Security.

The hearing, held at a municipal water district building in downtown Los Angeles, highlighted allegations of racial profiling and of mistreatment of detainees.

One man said in Spanish that he had been treated like a dog while in detention in San Bernardino County. One woman described seeing her co-workers at a car wash being detained during a raid. Another man who was detained described having to wear the same clothes for five days in a row.

Some of those who spoke said they were speaking on behalf of others who were too afraid to come forward themselves, out of fear of retribution by the federal government. One man said he feared he could now be targeted by ICE for testifying at the hearing.

“What we have seen is brutality for brutality’s sake,” Hugo Soto-Martínez, a member of the Los Angeles City Council, told lawmakers at the hearing.

One of those who testified about being arrested and detained was Andrea Velez, 32, a U.S. citizen.

Velez said she had been arrested and detained by federal agents June 24 in downtown Los Angeles. That day, her mother and sister dropped her off at work, and as she was on the street, she saw masked agents chasing people.

“One of them ran towards me,” Velez told lawmakers. “Terrified, I used my work bag as a shield, but he slammed me into the sidewalk and accused me of interfering.”

An affidavit filed by a federal agent in Velez’s case said an ICE agent was running after a man when Velez stepped into the officer’s path and extended her arm, in what federal officials said appeared to be an effort to stop the agent from chasing after the man. Velez was then arrested. Videos that circulated on social media show Velez being carried away by someone who appeared to be a federal agent.

Velez told lawmakers that agents had refused to tell her their names while she was being detained and that she had not resisted arrest.

“They didn’t believe I was a U.S. citizen or bothered to check my ID,” she said. Velez said she had been released two days later, and she added that she had not been allowed to contact her family during that time. Velez said that while she was being held at a federal detention center in downtown Los Angeles, in order to be able to drink water, she had to pay for a cup. Another detainee offered her a cup to use, she said.

Federal court records show that her case was dismissed in July. She said prosecutors had dropped it because of a lack of evidence. The immigration crackdown in Los Angeles drew an immediate backlash, leading to days of protests across the region. Officers clashed with demonstrators at times, and President Donald Trump soon deployed the National Guard to Los Angeles. Bass, who put in place a nightly curfew downtown during the demonstrations, was among the elected officials who testified on Monday.

“We knew that we were part of the experiment to see how much the American people would tolerate,” Bass said at the hearing. “The fear that blanketed this city is difficult to describe, frankly, because it’s so hard to believe it actually happened.”

After the hearing, Garcia, a second-term member of Congress and a former mayor of Long Beach, said he had been struck by the testimony from Velez.

“Her story about not having access to even water when she was detained is outrageous,” Garcia said. “She has as much rights as anybody else in this country, and I think to have those stories in front of the Congress is really important.”

In one week, Trump moves to reshape US environmental policy

The environmental rollbacks came one after the next last week, potentially affecting everything from the survival of rare whales to the health of the Hudson River.

On Nov. 17, the Environmental Protection Agency proposed to strip federal protections from millions of acres of wetlands and streams, narrowing the reach of the Clean Water Act.

Last week, federal wildlife agencies announced changes to the Endangered Species Act that could make it harder to rescue endangered species from the brink of extinction.

The Interior Department moved to allow new oil and gas drilling across nearly 1.3 billion acres of U.S. coastal waters, including a remote region in the high Arctic where drilling has never before taken place.

If the Trump administration’s proposals are finalized and upheld in court, they could reshape U.S. environmental policy for years to come, environmental lawyers and activists said.

“This was the week from hell for environmental policy in the United States,” said Pat Parenteau, a professor emeritus and senior fellow for climate policy at Vermont Law and Graduate School. “Unless stopped by the courts, each of these proposed rollbacks will do irreparable harm to the nation’s water quality, endangered species and marine ecosystems.”

The quick pace of these proposals was notable, even for an administration that has enacted President Donald Trump’s agenda at breakneck speed.

While the administration was working in Washington to dismantle environmental protections, 3,300 miles to the south, negotiators from nearly 200 nations were trying to improve the planet’s health at the United Nations climate summit in Brazil.

A White House official, who declined to be identified, said the timing was unrelated to the U.N. climate summit, which the Trump administration boycotted this year. It was the first time since the annual summits began 30 years ago that the United States was not present.

“The Trump administration unveiled many historic announcements this week to further President Trump’s American energy dominance agenda,” Taylor Rogers, a White House spokesperson, said in an email. “President Trump serves the American people, not radical climate activists who have fallen victim to the biggest scam of the century.”

A range of industries supported the changes, including groups representing farmers, oil drillers, chemical manufacturers, homebuilders and real estate developers.

“The developments this week were definitely major steps toward the administration’s goal of achieving and restoring American energy dominance and manufacturing dominance as well,” said Chris Phalen, vice president of domestic policy at the National Association of Manufacturers, a trade group. “We’re definitely very pleased

with what came out.”

The EPA kicked off the wave of deregulation Nov. 17, when it proposed to significantly scale back the Clean Water Act, which Congress passed in 1972 to protect all “waters of the United States” from pollution or destruction.

The agency said it would more narrowly define “waters of the United States” to exclude many wetlands and streams across the country. The changes could strip federal protections from up to 55 million acres of wetlands, or about 85% of all wetlands nationwide, according to the Natural Resources Defense Council, an environmental group.

Sen. Cynthia Lummis, R-Wyo., said the changes would prevent people with the smallest of waterways on their properties from needing to obtain federal permits if they wanted to fill them in or dump pollutants. “Farmers, ranchers and landowners shouldn’t have every puddle or gully regulated by D.C. bureaucrats,” she said in a statement.

The deregulatory spree picked up Wednesday, when the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the National Marine Fisheries Service announced changes to the way the Endangered Species Act, the bedrock environmental law intended to prevent animal and plant extinctions, is applied.

The proposals would allow the government to assess economic factors, such as lost revenue from a ban on oil drilling near critical habitat, before deciding whether to list a species as endangered. At the moment, the government considers only the best available science when awarding that designation, which triggers protections against killing or harming the species and interfering with its habitat.

It was easy to miss the announcement about endangered species, which came on the same day that Trump signed legislation calling on the Justice Department to make public its files on convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

But the move was worth attention, said Andrew Mergen,

an environmental law professor at Harvard Law School.

“It’s really hard for the public to keep track of this news, but it’s really important that they do,” Mergen said. “We’re going to lose species and their habitats in a death-by-a-thousand-cuts way, but there are things that can be done to right the ship and help these species recover.”

On Thursday, as the news cycle was dominated by Trump’s insult of a journalist, the Interior Department announced a plan to hold as many as 34 sales of leases in federal waters spanning roughly 1.27 billion acres, an area more than half the size of the United States.

The plan would require six sales of leases off the coast of California, where Gov. Gavin Newsom, a Democrat and critic of Trump, has promised to block any new drilling. It also would mandate seven auctions of leases in the Gulf of Mexico, which Trump calls the Gulf of America, and 21 auctions of leases off the coast of Alaska, including in an isolated region called the high Arctic stretching more than 200 miles offshore.

Analysts said oil companies may not rush to snap up leases off California, where Newsom could reject permits for the infrastructure on land, such as pipelines and terminals, that is needed to support offshore drilling. Companies may also avoid the icy high Arctic, given the severe weather conditions and the lack of existing infrastructure.

Instead, oil industry interest could be concentrated in the Gulf, where drilling rigs are already plentiful. “The Gulf has the infrastructure, workforce and expertise that make it uniquely productive,” said Erik Milito, the president of the National Ocean Industries Association, a trade group that represents offshore drilling companies as well as offshore wind firms. Ultimately, it could take the administration up to two years to finalize the proposals unveiled last week. At that point, environmental groups and other opponents could challenge the rules in court, leading to lengthy legal battles.

Wdown again. His way back up this time

hen Donald Trump’s approval ratings dropped sharply last April, the wound was essentially self-inflicted and the prescription relatively simple: Dial it back. Meaning smaller and less destructive tariffs, a retreat from brinkmanship with the Supreme Court, less random hacking away at government programs by Elon Musk and Co.

The administration did chill out, to some degree. Musk departed, the tariffs diminished from their “Liberation Day” maximum, the White House stopped shipping people to the Salvadoran dungeon and began picking its judicial battles more carefully. And sure enough, Trump’s approval ratings bobbed back up.

But now he’s down again, to the lowest point of this presidency, with the generic ballot threatening a midterm bloodbath for his party. And this time the prescription is less obvious, the trend harder to reverse.

Not that some of the damage isn’t self-inflicted, as it always is with Trump — from the Jeffrey Epstein stonewall to the botched handling of the shutdown to the constant stream of fighting words and insults. It’s always the case that the president could improve his political position by just being a little bit more magnanimous (in the style of his entertaining meeting with Zohran Mamdani), a little bit more normal.

But the most important problem is broader economic discontent, and there’s no simple reversal or tactical improvement that can help Trump here. He has entered the same territory as Joe Biden, dealing with an economy that isn’t terrible but leaves people chronically dissatisfied, and whose problems can’t be

Then a final reading of the economic landscape: The administration has pushed a lot of chips into the artificial intelligence race, and that revolution may pay off too slowly for Trump to benefit politically while proving widely unpopular along the way.

This is not the bubble scenario; it’s just the more prosaic reality that tech adoption is generally slower than tech development. So even if AI systems keep progressing (which they are, though timelines that promised the eschaton by 2027 are being extended toward the 2030s), the bottlenecks of habit, regulation and slow corporate uptake may postpone any great productivity revolution into the next administration or the next decade.

And pending that revolution, the big gains from AI are in the stock market rather than in jobs or wages — while the public narrative around AI tends to promise massive disruption, the end of work as we know it, with a risk of apocalypse baked in. It’s hard to see how that combination — rich people compounding gains while normal people are promised that everything solid in their lives will soon melt into air — is going to be good for an incumbent administration.

solved via executive fiat.

There are a few ways to think about those problems. The simplest reading would focus on inflation, which is still too high for public comfort even as it’s paired with high interest rates that are squeezing the life out of the housing market. In this environment, even if Trump could commandeer the Federal Reserve, it’s not clear what he could accomplish. Cut interest rates, and housing breathes again — but everyday inflation rises further. Raise them, and maybe everyday inflation eases — but then the housing market constricts, and growth with it.

This leaves fiscal policy as the zone for anti-inflationary action, via some kind of grand bargain on budgetary restraint — but we all know that won’t happen. The administration already spent its capital on the One Big Beautiful Bill, and the fiscal lever stands rusting with the rest of Congress’ powers. So prices and the housing market are left to heal themselves.

Now a second reading of our economic discontents: We are suffering from the incompleteness of Trump’s nationalist agenda. Tariffs, trade adjustments and immigration cuts are all meant to reset the U.S. economy, pushing industry toward domestic investment and native hiring, with pain along the way but a better bargain for the future.

But the sharpest advocates of this (highly contestable!) approach have always argued that tariffs make sense as part of a larger industrial policy program that supports domestic manufacturing and workers. Likewise, immigration cuts in an aging society only really make sense if you have plans to invest more heavily in families and children. And neither family policy nor industrial policy is much in evidence from this administration. So manufacturing is slumping, not reviving, the baby bust is still in force, and all the right-wing posturing about a RETVRN to good-paying jobs supporting single-earner families just looks like reactionary coping.

Which doesn’t mean that the AI bet is the wrong policy, especially so long as China is making the same one. But it leaves the Trump administration in a position where its long-term policy bet is immediately unpopular, while on immediate-seeming issues, inflation and jobs and housing and manufacturing, it seems to have no policy at all. That’s the position of a political loser — and sooner or later, a lame duck.

Udo Kier, German actor who played eccentric villains, dies at 81

landmark film of the New Queer Cinema movement of the 1990s.

He also appeared in the 1992 Madonna music videos “Erotica” and “Deeper and Deeper,” songs from her album “Erotica.” Kier makes a cameo appearance in the first video, caressing the singer, and in the second he delivers an opening line: “Beware! Our idols and demons will pursue us until we learn to let them go!”

Information on Kier’s survivors was not immediately available.

Udo Kier was born Oct. 14, 1944, in Cologne, Germany. The hospital was bombed shortly after his birth, but he and his mother, Thekla Kierspe, survived.

Kier grew up in poverty and worked in a factory until he had enough money to emigrate to England, he told The Guardian in 2002.

By 1966, Kier had moved to London to study English. Michael Sarne, a British singer and film director, approached him at a coffee shop and cast him for his first role, a male escort in the film “Road to Saint Tropez” (1966).

Kier then starred in “Mark of the Devil” (1970) as an apprentice witch hunter. The film shocked audiences for its extreme violence and foreshadowed the cynical and nefarious roles like Baron Frankenstein and Count Dracula that would define Kier’s early career.

Kier made his foray into Hollywood after meeting Van Sant at the Berlin Film Festival. That led to “My Own Private Idaho,” which follows two young male prostitutes who travel from Portland, Oregon, to Idaho, and then to Rome.

Kier appeared in more than 200 films and won numerous awards, including the Special Teddy Award at the 2015 Berlin International Film Festival for his contributions to queer cinema and the best actor award at the Dublin International Film Festival for his role in the film “Swan Song” (2022). In the film, Kier plays a retired hairdresser who travels across an Ohio town to style a dead woman’s hair for her funeral.

In the Brazilian film “The Secret Agent” (2025), which was screened in May at the Cannes Film Festival, he played a Jewish Holocaust survivor in Brazil who is mistaken for a Nazi fugitive.

“I don’t calculate it, but I want to do something in a movie which people will remember,” Kier said in an interview with Variety in 2024. “I’m not an actor who is happy to get a script and do exactly what is written. That would be boring.”

Wall St extends rally on growing bets for December Fed rate cut

Wall Street gained ground on Tuesday as revived tech strength and the growing probability of a December interest rate cut from the U.S. Federal Reserve put investors in a buying mood the day before the Thanksgiving holiday.

All three major U.S. stock indexes were on course to notch their fourth consecutive daily gains, as investors looked past the worries over inflated tech valuations that dragged all three indexes to losses last week.

Those fears ebbed in the aftermath of artificial intelligence doyen Nvidia’s (NVDA.O), upbeat quarterly results and forward guidance, and were eased further by AI server maker Dell Technologies’ consensus-beating fourth-quarter revenue forecast.

“Nvidia ... put some of the short-term fears to rest,” said Matthew Keator, managing partner in the Keator Group, a wealth management firm in Lenox, Massachusetts. “Since then we’ve seen some dovish comments from the Fed, particularly the New York Fed governor, which I think are signaling a potential cut next month, and I think that that’s what’s been driving the markets lately.”

A poll conducted by Reuters showed that, on average, analysts expect the S&P 500 to rise by 12% between now and year-end 2026, powered by a robust economy, continued tech sector strength and an accommodative Fed.

The Fed’s Beige Book, which summarizes economic activity conditions by district, appeared to have little to no effect on rate cut expectations.

Financial markets are currently pricing in a likelihood of 84.9% that the central bank will implement a 25-basis-point reduction to its key Fed funds target rate at the conclusion of its December policy meeting, according to CME’s FedWatch tool.

Airlines were sharply higher on what is traditionally the busiest travel day of the year for commercial carriers. The S&P 1500 Airlines index (.SPCOMAIR), jumped 3.4%.

Air traffic is often viewed as a barometer of consumer health, which bodes well heading into the holiday shopping season, which kicks off on Thanksgiving and is followed by Black Friday and Cyber Monday. The period is crucial for U.S. retailers as they court shoppers and navigate tariff-squeezed profit margins and a wave of corporate layoffs.

Since announcing today’s budget, she insisted it was

crafted for two audiences: jittery bond market investors and restless Labour backbenchers.

Even so, while the forecasts 2025 holiday sales to surpass $1 trillion for the first time, forecasts from discount retailers such as Walmart (WMT.N), and Target (TGT.N), have been mixed.

Economic data showed consensus-topping core capital goods orders in September, and while the report from the Commerce Department is stale due to government shutdown delays, it suggests corporate expenditures are more robust than economists predicted.

On the other hand, while initial claims for unemployment insurance landed below consensus, ongoing claims remain on an upward trend, supporting recent survey data showing consumers’ assessment of the labor market is deteriorating.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average (.DJI), rose 388.45 points, or 0.82%, to 47,501.03, the S&P 500 (.SPX), gained 53.34 points, or 0.79%, to 6,819.20 and the Nasdaq Composite (.IXIC), gained 198.98 points, or 0.86%, to 23,224.17.

Dell Technologies jumped 5.9% in the wake of its betterthan-expected earnings and upbeat forecast

Human resources software firm Workday (WDAY.O), slid 9.3% after the company reported third-quarter subscription revenue with estimates.

Deere’s (DE.N), weaker-than-expected annual profit forecast, weighed down by tariff effects, sent the heavy machinery maker’s shares down 4.7%.

Advancing issues outnumbered decliners by a 4.11-to1 ratio on the NYSE. There were 225 new highs and 20 new lows on the NYSE.

On the Nasdaq, 3,165 stocks rose and 1,417 fell as advancing issues outnumbered decliners by a 2.23-to-1 ratio. The S&P 500 posted 31 new 52-week highs and no new lows while the Nasdaq Composite recorded 118 new highs and 44 new lows.

Denmark offers lessons as Europe toughens up on immigration

Britain’s government is joining the rest of Europe in taking a stricter stance on asylum, turning to the country that has become something of a migration role model: Denmark.

Right-wing parties across Europe have sought for years to limit migration, often arguing that too many migrants could overwhelm public services and fracture social cohesion. Denmark stands out, though, because here it was a center-left government that doubled down on strict rules. Asylum flows have steadily fallen, and the Danish Social Democrats have retained national power.

But as Keir Starmer’s Labour government in London takes notes, unveiling a plan this month that openly borrows elements of Denmark’s policy, the way the Danish approach has worked on the ground offers reasons to proceed carefully. The political gains that the approach seemed to offer now show some signs of cracking, and policies meant to limit the entry of asylum-seekers may come at a social cost.

Lars Lokke Rasmussen, the moderate politician who was prime minister when Denmark adopted many of its strictest policies, said immigration policy was about both limiting big flows of potential refugees and welcoming needed foreigners.

“They should just recall that we need this balanced approach,” said Rasmussen, who is now the Danish foreign minister. “It’s not black and white. It’s a colorful world, and it comes with a lot of nuances.”

‘Unwelcoming Country’

Over the years, but especially since the Syrian refugee crisis of 2015 sent a flood of newcomers into Europe, the Danish government has enacted policies to make life challenging for asylum-seekers, trying to discourage them from coming.

Danish officials say the country wants to slow the flow of new asylum-seekers so it can adjudicate their cases carefully, and thoroughly integrate the people whom it does accept, even as it still takes a large number of documented migrants. The point, they say, is to avoid pressures that rapid migration has put on other societies, including homelessness, while maintaining public support in a society with high taxes and generous welfare policies.

Copenhagen pioneered a number of policies that Britain hopes to emulate. Some were largely symbolic, like threatening to confiscate the jewelry and valuables of would-be refugees to pay for their expenses. It also has made the process to gain permanent residence longer and subject to review. And it houses would-be refugees in conditions that it hopes discourages them from remaining.

That’s the case at Avnstrup return center, a former sanitarium filled with sparse, dormitory-like rooms in the countryside about an hour outside of Copenhagen. The Danish government sends some asylum-seekers there, including people who are waiting on decisions and others who have been rejected but who cannot be returned to their home countries.

Some human rights experts argue that even as govern-

ments make asylum processes more difficult, people in danger will still seek refuge, but they will be caught in worse conditions.

It is a “race to the bottom,” said Michala Clante Bendixen, who runs the refugee advisory group Refugees Welcome Denmark, which creates a “constant atmosphere of stress and insecurity.”

And migration researchers say the policies could have a long-run social cost, making even legal migrants and their descendants feel unwanted in Danish society.

“We’ve really branded ourselves as a more unwelcoming country,” said Thomas Gammeltoft-Hansen, a professor of migration law at the University of Copenhagen.

‘Open and Closed at the Same Time’

Denmark is not alone in restricting asylum. The Biden administration progressively tightened American rules over its time in office and in some cases went further, turning away potential asylum-seekers at the U.S.-Mexico border. And countries across Europe are becoming steadily stricter about who enters and stays.

But Denmark’s tough stance on asylum came early. Its policies began to tighten notably after 2015 and continued after 2019, when Mette Frederiksen, the prime minister, came into office. At the time, the policies made her Social Democrats an outlier on the left.

Rasmussen, the prime minister who oversaw the early shift toward a stricter approach, pointed out that Denmark still welcomes many legal migrants. But, he added, with its high taxes and generous welfare state, it also needed to limit asylum flows.

“If we can’t solve that dilemma, being open and closed at the same time, then we will lose our people’s support,” he said.

The Danish approach seemed to work. Denmark has not experienced some of the acute migration-related strains of nearby nations like Germany, Sweden and Belgium. In 2015,

about 21,000 people sought asylum in Denmark, with the largest numbers coming from Syria and Eritrea. That figure fell to just over 2,000 last year, based on Eurostat data.

Asylum numbers have dropped across Europe, making it hard to say exactly how much of it owes to Danish policy. Still, today Denmark ranks toward the bottom of the pack in applications among the European Union’s 27 nations.

The approach also seemed to pay political dividends. As far-right European parties rose in response to concerns about migration, Frederiksen retained power.

Political Warning Sign

Yet last week’s municipal elections raised questions about whether that boost from migration policy will continue next year, when Social Democrats face a national election. Frederiksen’s party performed badly, losing control of Copenhagen for the first time in more than 100 years as voters shifted further to the left.

While local issues like parking and housing costs were at play, the way the government talks about migration was also on the minds of some voters.

Denmark has also faced legal pushback for its policies. A so-called ghetto law allowed the government to cut public housing in struggling neighborhoods where more than half of residents come from “non-Western” backgrounds. Earlier this year, a senior adviser at the European Union’s top court found that to be ethnic discrimination.

Even Rasmussen, who helped forge the policies, suggested that not all worked well. The jewelry confiscation law enacted while he was prime minister, for instance, was widely criticized in the global press, painting Denmark as hostile to migrants, and it was rarely used.

“It sent a problematic signal,” Rasmussen said. He said the goal should be to remain open to legal newcomers who can help the aging population and fuel economic growth, and to migrants who truly need asylum.

People cast their vote at Gentofte Town Hall, north of Copenhagen, Denmark, Nov. 18, 2025. Local issues like parking and housing costs were at play, as was migration policy. (Charlotte de la Fuente/The New York Times)

Around here, it’s not a party without a bone-rattling speaker truck

The red truck was decked out in blue, yellow and neon lights. It was hauling speakers racked 12 feet high and almost 15 feet wide.

It trundled down a narrow village street, booming out Javanese folk music remixed with electronic beats. The bass coursed through every body in sight.

“Now, this is what we call horeg,” shouted Aldi Ferdian, using a Javanese word that means to vibrate or shake. “You can feel the vibration in your chest.”

It was one of 20 trucks rented by the residents of Kranggan, a village in Indonesia, in August for an Independence Day parade that covered a couple of miles. All had racks of speakers powered by generators, pumping out deafening music for hours. Each was followed by dancers, some dressed in traditional kebayas and children in Disney princess costumes. The only people wearing earplugs were in the audience.

In recent years, demand for these trucks — known as sound horegs — has soared in sections of East Java province, which is part of Indonesia’s most populous island and home to more than 40 million people. They amp up religious festivals, national holidays and family gatherings like weddings and circumcisions.

“We villagers have limited options for entertainment,” said Aldi, 24, who traveled more than 500 miles back home from the capital, Jakarta, for the parade. “That’s why we really look forward to events like this.”

But these celebrations can be hazardous. Sound horegs have been blamed for broken roof tiles and cracked ceilings. Raucous crowds of horeg partyers have trampled fields of crops. In August, a man died after he fell off the speaker tower he was dancing on.

In Ngajum, a village near Kranggan, Sunandar was worried about how his bedridden wife would fare with the loud music that went on for 12 hours. She had recently suffered a stroke.

“I asked the head of our neighborhood association to lower the volume, but he said that inviting sound horeg was a

communal decision, so he couldn’t do anything about it,” said Sunandar, 81, as he watched the trucks pass his house. Like many Indonesians, he goes by one name.

The sound that Monday night was as loud as a rock concert, the volume topping 100 decibels on a decibel meter used by The New York Times. Extended exposure to 80 decibels or more is harmful, according to the World Health Organization.

In July, the local branch of the Indonesian Ulema Council, the nation’s highest Islamic authority, declared sound horegs to be haram, or forbidden by Islam. They have the potential to be harmful to people’s health, can be a waste of money and often involve drunken crowds and dancers in revealing outfits, it said. Regional authorities then set a sound limit of 85 decibels for parades.

But demand for the trucks has not dipped.

There are hundreds of sound horeg operators in just the Malang region, which includes Kranggan, charging as much as 40 million rupiah, or $2,400, a night for a truck. They are also

a boon for costume rentals and street vendors who hawk food, drinks and toys along the parade routes.

Muzahidin started Brewog Audio in 2018, renting out one small truck and sound system for events in Togogan, a village near the city of Malang. He now has 12 trucks staffed by 100 employees — all nearly booked for the rest of the year.

“Many villagers have also made an advance payment to book for next year’s events,” said Muzahidin, 39.

He said he had designed and made his own subwoofer, a key component of the sound systems. More subwoofers mean more bass and vibration.

That is what audiences want, said Anton Pradesta. He and his neighbors in Ngajum saved up for a year to rent a Brewog Audio truck for Independence Day.

Ahmad Abdul Aziz, 29, a Brewog Audio sound engineer, said customers often demanded the music be set at a high volume to produce more reverb.

“If it’s not loud, then it’s not horeg,” he said.

East Java has a more expressive culture than other parts of the island, and so its people are more tolerant of loud noises, said Nindyo Budi Kumoro, an anthropologist at Brawijaya University.

Sound horegs’ roots have been traced to the 1970s, when rock music started becoming popular in East Java and led to a new focus on sound systems. Later, the speakers started appearing on pickup trucks.

As with all music, many people think of sound horeg as freedom of expression, not noise pollution.

“People in the city have discos or clubs, then sound horeg could be seen as villagers’ musical expression,” said Muhammad Rayhan Sudrajat, an ethnomusicologist. It could even grow into its own genre, he added.

As the festivities in Kranggan came to a close, Aldi and his friends were discussing which operator to book for next year’s event.

“This is about pride,” Aldi said. “When we invite a great sound horeg vendor with a better reputation and quality, we feel prouder.”

Why crypto’s slide is rattling Wall Street

After a brutal and volatile week, bitcoin was down slightly earlier this week.

Crypto tokens have lost more than $1 trillion in market value since their October peak, according to Deutsche Bank, stoking fears that the sell-off has further to run.

Crypto die-hards have been here before, in the “crypto winter” of 2021 and 2022 and the collapse of Sam BankmanFried’s FTX. But the market is much bigger today — around $3 trillion globally — after the Securities and Exchange Commission last year approved spot bitcoin exchangetraded funds and the Trump administration embraced digital tokens.

The increased exposure has given rise to fears of a crypto rout slamming Wall Street this time.

“This is no longer a hobbyist asset class,” Lisa Shalett, the chief investment officer at Morgan Stanley Wealth Management, told DealBook. Asset management giants, including BlackRock and Fidelity, have helped take crypto mainstream. Harvard University and the Czech central bank have stocked up on digital tokens, too.

The rise of ETFs tied to bitcoin and other digital assets has “democratized the ownership,” Shalett said. It has also spread the risk.

The downside was on full display last week. Investors yanked money from bitcoin ETFs at a frenzied clip as the price briefly fell below $81,000. Roughly $3.8 billion flowed out of crypto ETFs from Nov. 1 to Nov. 19, according to Morningstar.

But the outflows are not at the level

An attendee at Bitcoin 2025 in Las Vegas, May 28, 2025. Bitcoin and other digital tokens have lost more than $1 trillion in value in recent weeks, raising concerns about a wider market fallout.

Bhaskar/The New York Times)

of 2022, said Bryan Armour, the Morningstar director of ETF and passive strategies research for North America.

There’s also more borrowed money in the market lately, analysts say. That could amp up the volatility, as was the case last month during a record $19 billion wipeout. Even a smaller crash could dent other parts of the market, especially if investors were forced to sell other assets, including stocks, to cover their crypto positions.

That fear grew after a stock market plunge Thursday that followed a drop in crypto prices. Steve Sosnick, the chief strategist at Interactive Brokers, wrote in a note to investors that Wall Street pros now see bitcoin volatility as “a signal” for wider market instability.

Could crypto foretell a wider market correction? “A lot of bigger, stickier money”

— as in buy-and-hold institutional investors — has moved in, Armour noted, which may explain why the outflows this month are tamer so far than in 2022. (Also worth watching: Will the next price plunge invite a

new wave of buying?)

Don’t count out crypto’s potential to move markets. “I don’t think this is a big systemic risk,” Shalett added. “But I do think there is bleed-over.”

Does joy feel out of reach? There’s

On Wednesday, Michela turned 49. She considered forcing herself to celebrate, but when two friends offered to take her out, she said no.

First, she would have to spend time getting ready. Then, she would need to participate in conversation, act enthusiastic, appreciate the moment.

“All that takes so much effort,” she said. “I just don’t have the energy.”

Michela, who asked to be identified only by her first name, wasn’t simply having a bad day. For years, she has had difficulty enjoying the things in life that would normally bring her joy and has felt little drive to pursue them — an experience called anhedonia.

Anhedonia is not a diagnosis but rather a common symptom of mental illness. It is a quiet symptom, not a blaring sign that something is wrong. And, for some people, that can mean it goes undetected, said Dr. Judith F. Joseph, a clinical assistant professor of child and adolescent psychiatry at NYU Grossman School of Medicine.

“It’s not seen as a crisis,” Joseph said. But in a way it is, she added. “It’s an existential crisis.”

And although most people aren’t familiar with the word “anhedonia,” they should be, she said. It is one of the core markers of major depressive disorder, which Michela lives with, and it is also tied to other illnesses, including schizophrenia, substance use disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder or PTSD.

We asked Joseph and other experts what we should know about anhedonia and why it can be so distressing. What is anhedonia?

Anhedonia has long been defined as a reduced ability to experience pleasure, but in more recent years, mental health clinicians also associate it with a lack of motivation to seek joy.

The foods that once tasted great might now seem boring. The museum that used to elicit feelings of awe no longer holds any appeal. Even getting out of bed might feel like a chore for someone with anhedonia — and they may start to withdraw from important people in their lives.

“I feel off” or “I don’t feel like myself” are common refrains, Joseph said. Someone with anhedonia might also describe feeling numb or empty.

“I had a patient that loved to go to dance concerts — she would attempt to go and she’d get no pleasure out of going,” said Dr. Mark Rapaport, president-elect of the American Psychiatric Association. “She was just sitting there.”

This might sound like depression, but it’s possible to have anhedonia without being diagnosed with major depressive disorder, which requires patients to have at least five different symptoms that cause distress or make it difficult to function.

a word for that.

Anhedonia can vary from person to person. Some may experience less joy than they normally would, while others experience no joy at all.

Having a brief spell of anhedonia can be normal, but if it lasts for days or weeks, that could be a sign of something more serious.

And if it’s not addressed, the ripple effects are many: Anhedonia can hurt mood, sleep and nutrition. And it has been associated with difficulty managing one’s life and relationships, a worse response to mental health treatments and an increased risk of suicide.

Why do people experience anhedonia?

Scientists are still working to discover the root causes of anhedonia.

Research suggests that it may be partly attributed to changes in the activity of certain neurotransmitters, the chemical messengers in the brain. Dopamine, for example, is the neurotransmitter that has been associated with the wanting of something and the motivation to go and get it.

Michael Treadway, a clinical psychologist and cognitive neuroscientist at Emory University, is investigating to what extent inflammation might play a role by disrupting the amount of dopamine that the body produces.

“The main question is: Can we figure out how to identify who has that sort of vulnerability?” he said. If so, “we could do a lot of really effective preventative and intervention strategies.”

Other research is examining whether it runs in families — some evidence points to a genetic component. There is also evidence that chronic, uncontrollable stressors like living in poverty or enduring discrimination can produce anhedonia as well.

In addition, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, which are often used to treat depression and other psychiatric illnesses, are known to produce emotional blunting or numbness — a feeling that may mimic aspects of anhedonia.

How is anhedonia treated?

There is no medicine that has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration to treat anhedonia specifically. But if you have an underlying disorder, like depression, getting treatment for it may help anhedonia symptoms improve. Getting enough sleep and regular exercise is also important.

A type of therapy called behavioral activation can also be effective for people living with anhedonia. “It’s sometimes referred to jokingly as ‘the Nike therapy’ because the motto is: ‘Just do it,’ ” Treadway said.

The guiding principle of behavioral activation is that behavior can affect your mood and well-being. If you gently push yourself to do things that are important to you, then you’ll help your brain remember how good it feels, which can then motivate you to do those things again.

Joseph urges anyone who thinks they may have anhedonia to talk to a mental health professional.

“Joy is not something that’s a luxury,” she said. “It’s essential.”

She walked away from a law career. Now she’s coaching in the WNBA

Sonia Raman fell in love with basketball in grade school. Her family moved to the Boston area in the 1980s, when Larry Bird led the Celtics to three NBA championships, and she began playing on the hoop in her driveway.

She did not imagine then that it would lead to her appointment as the first head coach of Indian descent in the WNBA last month, when she was hired by the Seattle Storm. In fact, the possibility of taking on such a role only crossed her mind very recently, Raman, 51, said.

In the early 2000s, she was focused on building a career as a lawyer, but she realized that the scouting and coaching work she was doing for local college teams was the best part of her day. The opportunity to lead the women’s basketball team at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology changed her trajectory. After 12 seasons, the Memphis Grizzlies hired her as an assistant coach in 2020 — making her the first Indian American woman to coach in the NBA. Only then, she said, did the possibility of leading a WNBA team come into view.

Raman spoke in a video interview this month about charting her own path to the helm of the Storm, one of the league’s most successful franchises. The following conversation has been edited and condensed.

Q: Was a coaching career always a

goal?

A: Not at all. After I finished up my playing career at Tufts, I stayed on as an assistant coach. I did that more because I loved the game and I wasn’t ready to hang it up as a player. It certainly wasn’t the beginnings of what I thought was a career path. While I was in law school, I did some scouting and coached some summer teams. I was doing this because it was fun, because I loved it. But I still thought: This is more of a hobby. When I finished law school and I started coaching at Wellesley College, somewhere along the way, things changed. The head coach that I worked under, she was constantly in my ear, telling me, “This is your passion. You need to be doing this full time.”

Q: Does being the first WNBA coach of Indian descent have meaning to you? If so, what does it mean?

A: It does. It’s an honor. It’s a privilege. I do take it as a tremendous responsibility, being the first. You never want to be the last. It’s important to show up and be my best self and work really hard to create these opportunities that are there for that next generation. I love seeing young kids come up to me and ask me questions, and knowing that their options, as they think about their journey and their careers, are vastly different

from what I thought mine were at that time.

Q: Your parents were immigrants to the United States from India. What perspective did you gain from their experience, and how do you apply that to coaching?

A: They always told me, whatever you do, try to be the best at doing that. My first job, I was 14 years old. I was working at the grocery store and finding the best way to bag the groceries.

I don’t think that any of us thought that becoming a basketball coach, becoming a head coach in the WNBA, was part of my track. In our community, there’s certain professions that sometimes we pursue, and that’s the track I was on. I just didn’t really know the possibilities, and neither did they. But the work ethic that was instilled into me transfers nicely no matter which path I would take.

Q: Has the feeling of being a “first”

changed for you over time?

A: It’s not something that’s front of mind for me, honestly. Going to the NBA, I was thinking much more about, how can I speed up my learning curve? How can I learn the NBA as quickly as possible so I can contribute to this team? Because it’s more about that and the work; the rest of it just comes with the territory. I want to make sure that I’m really intentional about doing a really good job, but also saying yes to people who reach out and want me to talk to certain groups.

There is actually a group of South Asians in the NBA, which we’ve extended to now the WNBA. Being part of that group and trying to think of how we can grow the game for our community has been something that I’ve been intentional about. But I don’t think that with each stop I’m thinking about being a first or the pressure that comes with it.
