The Women’s Advocate, Astrid Piñeiro Vázquez, announced Monday the start of the international 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence campaign, which will take place from November 25 to December 10 as part of ongoing efforts to prevent and eradicate violence against women and girls.
“It is essential that each person understands their role in the fight against gender violence. We cannot remain silent or indifferent in the face of this crisis,” said Piñeiro Vázquez in written statements.
She explained that the campaign takes place between the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and Human Rights Day, with educational activities, workshops, conferences, and orientations across several municipalities, in collaboration with nonprofit organizations that support victims and survivors.
Events include a talk at the Bayamón Women’s Prison on November 25, virtual conferences on December 4, informational tables on December 5, educational posts from December 6 to 9, and a closing activity in Toa Baja on December 10 featuring students and a community march.
The Women’s Advocate emphasized that these efforts align with the public policy of Governor Jenniffer Aidyn González Colón, who has reiterated that erRadicating violence is a priority of her administration.
As part of the campaign, OPM and the Telecommunications Bureau signed an agreement with the island’s major telecommunications companies to support the activation

The agreement also includes educational commitments, such as training sessions for telecommunications employees on domestic, sexual, and digital violence, workplace equality, and sexual harassment, along with joint educational initiatives in effect through December 2026.
The OPM urged the public to participate in the scheduled activities and stressed the importance of education, awareness, and collective action as essential tools to break the cycle of violence.

He explained that all courts and administrative offices will operate under regular hours through Wednesday, November 26. Beginning Thursday, November 27 — a holiday — and continuing through Sunday, November 30, the judicial centers, satellite courts, the Supreme Court, the Court of Appeals, and the Office of Court Administration will remain closed.
The official detailed that the In-
vestigation Room in Aguadilla will operate from 1:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.; the one in Mayagüez from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.; and the one in Ponce from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. In addition, the investigation rooms of Bayamón and San Juan will be consolidated at the Investigation Room of the Bayamón Judicial Center, operating from 1:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.
The remaining judicial regions will operate through the on-call judges system, available via calls from the nearest police precinct. The Electronic Court will remain available for filing protection orders, involuntary mental health admissions, and other urgent matters.

Likewise, the Supreme Court extended until the next business day any deadline that falls within the dates of complete closure.
The Judicial Branch urged the public to consult its official website and social media channels for additional information and updates.

On Monday, during the Puerto Rico Energy Bureau’s (PREB) ongoing rate case hearings, LUMA’s Chief Financial Officer, Andrew Smith, began his testimony, addressing critical issues that continue to affect Puerto Rico’s electric system recovery. His remarks focus on how PREPA’s prolonged bankruptcy and chronic underfunding have weakened the grid and severely limited efforts to improve reliability and resiliency for customers.
Smith explained that PREPA’s financial mismanagement, including its failure to replenish the Outage Event Reserve Account since 2023, has forced LUMA to divert more than $209 million from planned system improvements to cover unplanned outages and emergency response needs. This diversion of funds has resulted in the cancellation or deferral of projects intended to modernize and stabilize the transmission and distribution system. Smith emphasizes that this situation is far from normal for a utility company, where reserve accounts are typically maintained to handle unexpected events without jeopardizing planned investments.

Smith testimony underscores that
after decades of financial mismanagement, the system is operating with aging equipment, deferred maintenance, and an empty emergency reserve account.
healthy utilities. This inability to access capital markets directly harms customers, as it limits the scope and pace of improvements needed to strengthen the grid.
useful life and rely on decades-old technology, all of which negatively affect performance and reliability.
“After decades of PREPA’s financial mismanagement, the electric system is operating with aged equipment, deferred maintenance, and an empty emergency reserve account,” said Andrew Smith.
“To improve reliability, resiliency, and the customer experience Puerto Rico deserves, we must address these structural challenges and invest every cent responsibly. LUMA does not profit from customer rates—every dollar goes back into operating and improving the grid.”
Smith further noted that the liquidity situation became more acute in the first quarter of fiscal year 2025 when PREPA substantially reduced monthly funding to LUMA, and those depressed levels have persisted. Despite these challenges, LUMA has continued to respond to major outage events, including Hurricane Fiona and Tropical Storm Ernesto, even though the Outage Event Reserve Account has not been replenished since November 2023 and currently holds no funds.
He also highlighted the impact of PREPA’s decade-long, $10 billion unresolved bankruptcy, which has prevented access to credit and financing tools that utilities rely on to spread the cost of infrastructure investments over decades. Because PREPA cannot borrow or issue bonds, all investments in the grid must be paid upfront each year, rather than financed over ten, twenty, or thirty years as is standard practice for financially
The hearings, which began in mid-November and will continue through December, aim to determine the level of funding required to make responsible, strategic investments that will ensure long-term reliability and resiliency for Puerto Rico’s electric system. Smith underscores that after decades of financial mismanagement, the system is operating with aging equipment, deferred maintenance, and an empty emergency reserve account. He warns that many components of the transmission and distribution system are at or beyond their

Popular Democratic Party Senator José A. Santiago Rivera, who chairs the Senate Committee on Municipal Affairs, has unveiled a proposal to fully exempt 94% of businesses on the island from paying the inventory tax. The measure, he said, would not disrupt funding for essential municipal services.
The announcement comes amid ongoing tensions between merchants and mayors over the scope of eliminating the tax. Santiago Rivera said he has submitted the proposal to the Secretary of State and the technical committee reviewing the issue, urging them to analyze a 2021 report by the Senate Finance Committee.
“Based on the findings of that report, our proposal guarantees municipal revenue while exempting 94% of the commercial sector from paying the tax,” Santiago Rivera stated during a press conference.
The 2021 study, led by then-Senator Juan Zaragoza,
used data from the Municipal Revenue Collection Center (CRIM) for fiscal year 2019. According to the report, the inventory tax generated $248.6 million that year. Of that amount, roughly $35.2 million came from 20,911 businesses with annual sales between $0 and $5 million—representing 94% of all businesses. The remaining 6%, about 1,335 larger businesses, contributed $213 million.
“This means a substantial number of small and medium-sized businesses could be exempted without causing a significant fiscal impact,” Santiago Rivera explained. He added that the central government would not need to replace the full $300 million municipalities currently collect from the tax. Instead, the shortfall would be limited to $35–$40 million, which could be covered in the general budget for fiscal year 2026–27.
Santiago Rivera emphasized that the measure would allow small businesses to maintain adequate inventory reserves to meet customer demand during emergencies, while municipalities would continue providing essential services.
Smith’s testimony painted a stark picture of the consequences of PREPA’s financial instability: a grid in significant disrepair, critical components operating beyond their intended lifespan, and a lack of access to financing that forces short-term fixes instead of long-term solutions. The outcome of these hearings will be pivotal in determining whether Puerto Rico can finally begin to make the strategic investments necessary to build a reliable, resilient electric system for the future.

“We believe the amount the government needs to identify will not exceed $50 million,” he said.
The senator plans to introduce the proposal as legislation at the start of the next session, pending updated figures from the technical committee.

Gen. Dan Caine, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, is in Puerto Rico and on Monday toured one of the U.S. Navy warships stationed in the Caribbean as part of Washington’s anti-narcotics campaign, amid reports of mounting pressure on Venezuela.
This marks Caine’s second trip to the island since the start of Operation Southern Spear, a large-scale effort targeting drug trafficking in Caribbean waters that began in September. Caine is considered one of the architects of the operation, according to different media outlets.
According to a Pentagon statement, Caine will meet with U.S. Army personnel in Puerto Rico to “thank them for their outstanding support of regional missions” just days before Thanksgiving, one of the country’s major holidays. The Defense Department added that he will also visit sailors at sea to commend their “dedication and unwavering service” within U.S. Southern Command’s area of responsibility.
Alongside troop inspections, Caine is expected to review readiness levels of forces and equipment deployed to the region, according to The New York Times.
Experts describe the current buildup as the largest U.S. military presence in the Caribbean since the Cuban Missile Crisis and naval blockade of 1962. Washington has deployed more than 10,000 troops to the area and positioned its largest aircraft carrier, the USS Gerald R. Ford, near Venezuelan waters under the banner of its anti-drug mission. The operation also includes Marine units aboard amphibious ships and roughly 5,000 personnel at bases in Puerto Rico.
Caine’s visit coincides with the U.S. formally desig-
nating the Cartel of the Suns—a shadowy group allegedly tied to Venezuela’s military and government leadership—as a Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO). Washington accuses President Nicolás Maduro of leading the cartel, a claim Caracas denies.
The trip comes amid escalating tensions with Venezuela and reports that President Trump has authorized CIA plans for covert actions inside the country in preparation for future operations, according to sources cited by The New York Times.
Operation Southern Spear represents the most significant U.S. military mobilization in the Caribbean in decades, drawing comparisons to Cold War-era interventions. The militarization of U.S. counter-narcotics policy dates back to the late 1980s, when President George H.W. Bush declared the “War on Drugs” and authorized the Department of Defense to lead detection and monitoring of drug flows into the United States. This period saw the creation of Joint Task Force-6 and operations like Blast Furnace in Bolivia (1986), which marked the first major U.S. military anti-drug mission abroad
In the 1990s and early 2000s, U.S. Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) continued to integrate military assets into drug interdiction efforts, though these missions were generally limited in scope. The current campaign, however, is unprecedented in scale: Southern Spear combines traditional naval forces with robotic and autonomous systems—a “hybrid fleet” designed to detect and disrupt trafficking networks across the Caribbean and Eastern Pacific.
Experts note that this escalation echoes past U.S. strategies in Latin America, where anti-drug operations often served broader geopolitical aims. Today, critics argue that

On September 8, Secretary of the Army Pete Hegseth and General Dan Caine, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, visited the island, highlighting Puerto Rico’s strategic importance for U.S. national security, as well as its role in combating drug cartels and the narco dictator Nicolás Maduro through the America First policy, which strengthens border security and fights illicit activities in the region.
Southern Spear, while framed as a counternarcotics mission, also functions as a pressure tool against Venezuela’s government, reviving concerns about interventionism reminiscent of the Monroe Doctrine.
Washington has deployed more than 10,000 troops to the Caribbean, including 5,000 in Puerto Rico, and positioned its largest aircraft carrier, the USS Gerald R. Ford, near Venezuelan waters. The operation also includes Marine units aboard amphibious ships and advanced surveillance systems. Since September, U.S. forces have sunk about 20 suspected drug-laden vessels and killed more than 80 crew members, according to Pentagon reports.

Puerto Rico’s Resident Commissioner, Pablo José Hernández, has called on the U.S. Department of Defense for an immediate briefing and full transparency following a sudden surge in military-related activity affecting the island. The concerns include unexplained airspace restrictions, reports of training exercises, and new authorizations for munitions disposal on the island municipality of Vieques.
Local authorities say they were not notified about these developments, prompting Hernández to demand clarity from federal officials. “Any indication of new military operations in Vieques — whether on land or in FAA-controlled airspace — requires a clear and immediate explanation,” Hernández wrote in a letter to the Pentagon. “The people of Puerto Rico have the right to know, without ambiguity, what operations are being authorized and whether these activities jeopardize the federally mandated cleanup process. Vieques cannot

endure more uncertainty or decisions made without transparency.”
For decades, the former U.S. Navy bombing range in Vieques has been the focus of one of the largest and most sensitive environmental cleanups in the country, following years of military exercises that left contamination and long-term health impacts on residents.
In recent weeks, unexplained activity has raised alarms including a Notice to Air Missions (NOTAM) restricting airspace over Ceiba for “special security reasons” from November 1, 2025, through March 31, 2026; reports of training exercises at Camp Santiago in Salinas on November 20; and new authorization for munitions disposal at the former Vieques range.
Last week, Hernández issued a public statement as soon as the first NOTAMs and reports surfaced, stressing the need for immediate transparency from the Department of Defense. He is also working with a broader congressional coalition to push for greater oversight and clarity on these activities.

It was a break-the-internet moment if there ever was one. Unpredictable, at times perplexing and rich, with the kinds of surreal moments social media feeds on.
After Friday’s meeting between President Donald Trump and Zohran Mamdani, the mayor-elect of New York, certain corners of the internet did, in fact, appear to be broken — or at least temporarily off-kilter — including the sprawling online ecosystem that has emerged from the Make America Great Again movement.
This raucous hive, which tends to hype up every win by the president, was uncharacteristically muted in response to the meeting with Mamdani. What was supposed to be a “socialist showdown,” in the words of a Fox News chyron, was instead filled with smiles, good vibes and the president’s endorsement of Mamdani’s leadership.
“I feel very confident that he can do a very good job,” Trump told reporters.
With no ideological confrontation to rally around, political influencers and commentators associated with the MAGA movement struggled to summon a unified response. The diverging reactions across the conservative spectrum — from long-standing Trump loyalists, widely read anonymous posters and users representing the young America First wing — underscored the divisions and infighting roiling the right.
Many of the MAGA faithful opted for a more tentative approach, spotlighting the president’s softer side.
One influential white nationalist account argued that Trump was sparing Mamdani a public humiliation. Another post making the rounds, by a pro-Trump YouTuber, suggested the interaction between the two men was proof of the president’s sense of humor.
Some of the movement’s most authoritative voices, like Tucker Carlson, had yet to weigh in as of Sunday afternoon. Even the president’s own clip account on the social media platform X, Rapid Response 47, a reliable booster of all things Trump, opted to ignore Friday’s sit-down altogether.
Since his primary victory, Mamdani has been the target of a steady stream of attacks by broad swaths of the right. Branding him an “antisemitic socialist,” Republicans routinely sounded the alarm on his platforms and ridiculed what they said were “radical” stances on issues including Israel and policing. And as recently as June, Trump called Mamdani a “communist lunatic” in a post on Truth Social, a label that has echoed throughout right-wing podcasts and media.
Mamdani has condemned what he calls Trump’s “fascist agenda,” a label Trump let the mayor-elect off the hook for during Friday’s meeting.
Nick Fuentes, the 27-year-old white nationalist who has emerged in recent months as the MAGA movement’s chief antagonist, seemed to revel in the disarray set off by Friday’s meeting.
A frequent critic of Trump and his acolytes in the Republican establishment, Fuentes has called for a total immigration ban and for the administration to cut ties with Israel. He characterized the Republicans’ hostile stance toward

hungry for a show of resistance. Benny Johnson, a conservative commentator, and Andrew Kolvet, the spokesperson for the conservative group Turning Point USA, each praised Posobiec for going toe to toe with Mamdani. “This is how it’s done,” Johnson wrote on X.
One critique came from one of Trump’s most loyal backers: far-right activist Laura Loomer. On X, Loomer wrote that it was “wild” to see a “Jihadist communist” stand in the Oval Office, referring to Mamdani. She quickly clarified in another post, however, that she was not “condemning” the president.
As MAGA’s online communities oscillated, much of the rest of social media reveled in a deviation from the usual political script.
Reached for comment, a spokesperson for Mamdani noted how the president bonded with the mayor-elect over issues of affordability and their stature as political outsiders. Trump also spoke approvingly Friday of another establishment outsider, Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., adding that he and Sanders, too, “agreed on much more than people thought.”
Mamdani’s spokesperson, Dora Pekec, wrote in a statement that “the vast majority of Americans are deeply frustrated with a rigged economy and a broken political system.” She added: “While the mayor-elect shared his many disagreements with the president, they agreed on tackling the affordability crisis that is crushing New Yorkers.”
Still, many on the right refused to view the day’s events as a political capitulation.
Steve Bannon, who served as chief strategist for a time during Trump’s first administration and remains a confidant to the president, was one of the lone figures trying to shape the perception of the day’s events. During a livestream of Bannon’s podcast, “War Room,” where he was joined by Posobiec, he briefly theorized that Trump’s buddy act was, in fact, a strategic trap.
“He’s going to boost Mamdani, whose policies will crater the city,” Bannon said. “Trump will let him collapse because he’s a Marxist jihadist.”
Mamdani as “political theater.”
To Fuentes, the meeting only underscored the political hypocrisy of the MAGA movement’s leadership in Washington and its prominent voices online.
“It’s kayfabe, it’s all a soap opera,” Fuentes said during a stream of his “America First” program on Friday evening. “They don’t believe anything they’re peddling.”
One immediate winner to emerge from the encounter has been Jack Posobiec, a far-right podcaster and activist who was recently credentialed as a member of the White House press pool. As Trump and Mamdani fielded questions from reporters, Posobiec pressed the mayor-elect on his campaign’s policy proposals, asking whether Mamdani intended to increase property taxes for “white people” in New York City.
“No, we intend to create a fair property tax system,” Mamdani answered.
The skirmish earned Posobiec plaudits from those

President Donald Trump intends to strip hundreds of Somalis living in the United States of the protected status they have had for decades under a program for immigrants from countries in crisis.
Trump specifically targeted “Somalis in Minnesota” in a social media post Friday, writing that he was terminating their eligibility for the Temporary Protected Status program. More Somalis live in Minnesota than in any other state.
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said in Minneapolis on Sunday that her office would evaluate whether to end protection for Somalis under the program. Doing so would require giving 60 days’ notice. Noem suggested that, if the status was revoked, the change would apply to Somali immigrants across the country, and not just in Minnesota.
Temporary Protected Status allows people from countries in turmoil because of a civil war, natural disaster or other crisis to live and work in the United States. Technically, the status is temporary, and meant to last about 18 months unless it is renewed — but it has often been renewed, and for several groups including the Somalis, it had become all but permanent.
Protected status was first granted to Somalis in 1991, when the country was torn apart by civil war and its national government collapsed. The designation has been extended many times since, including under the prior Trump administration. The most recent renewal was to last until mid-March.
Though there are an estimated 42,500 foreign-born Somalis living in Minnesota,

only a small number of whom are covered by the Temporary Protected Status program.
As of March, there were 705 Somalis in the whole United States who were covered

by the status, according to the Congressional Research Service. Counting people from other covered countries as well, Minnesota has about 8,460 people with the protected status.
On his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump wrote Friday that “Somali gangs are terrorizing the people” of Minnesota, and said that the state was a “hub of fraudulent money laundering activity.”
Several Somali immigrants in Minnesota have been convicted in fraud schemes in recent years, including embezzlement of government funds from food-aid programs for hungry children.
Gov. Tim Walz, a Democrat, said on social media that Trump had chosen to “broadly target an entire community.” Walz suggested that the president’s move was an attempt to distract attention from other issues in the administration.
Somalia is home to about 18 million
people and is part of the Horn of Africa on the continent’s eastern side. The country has been racked by problems including violence, drought and poverty for decades. Recently, U.S. aid groups have had to limit their work in the country because Trump dismantled the Agency for International Development.
About 73% of Somali immigrants in the United States are naturalized U.S. citizens, according to the Census Bureau.
Trump has moved to end TPS protection for hundreds of thousands of immigrants from other countries, including Venezuela, Honduras, Afghanistan and, earlier this month, South Sudan.
Under President Joe Biden, the Homeland Security Department allowed Somalis who had arrived in the United States in recent years to apply for the protection. The agency estimated last year that as many as 4,300 people could become eligible under that policy.

Today’s Republican Party is big on manliness and masculine virtues. The MAGA right in particular is forever obsessing over who is the biggest, the strongest, the most fearless among them.
This is why, watching President Donald Trump’s fight to keep a lid on the Epstein files, I have been struck, delighted even, that among the vanishingly few Republican lawmakers with the courage to defy him have been three fire-breathing congresswomen: Reps. Lauren Boebert of Colorado, Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia and Nancy Mace of South Carolina.
Love ’em or hate ’em, these House troublemakers bucked their party leadership, stared down their president and made possible Tuesday’s vote to compel the administration to come clean about the web of degeneracy surrounding Jeffrey Epstein. In the end, all but one Republican joined every Democrat to pass the Epstein Files Transparency Act. This victory speaks to the value of having women’s voices, and strength, inside the Republican echo chamber, a place that can still be tough for women to navigate.
Aside from Rep. Thomas Massie of Kentucky, the Republicans’ chief crusader for Epstein transparency, Boebert, Greene and Mace did more than the rest of their conference combined to keep the heat on Trump by signing the discharge petition to force a vote on Massie’s bill, sponsored with Rep. Ro Khanna, D-Calif. No other Republicans dared cross the president, who, in characteristic mob-boss fashion, made clear that support for the measure would be considered a “hostile act.”
True to his word, Trump worked to bully the rebels into submission. For months, he tried a variety of carrots and sticks on Boebert. His top aides even called her into the Situation Room for ... a friendly chat. He has repeatedly torn into Greene, calling her a “traitor” and expressing eagerness to support a primary challenger against her in next year’s midterms. His toxic tirades have resulted in Greene receiving death threats from his followers, she has said. And, yes, she recognizes the irony, Greene told CNN.
Subtle this president is not. But his strong-arm tactics only caused Boebert to dig in, those close to her told The New York Times. Greene has responded with open aggression, leaning into her public feud with the president.
“As a woman I take threats from men seriously. I now have a small understanding of the fear and pressure the women, who are victims of Jeffrey Epstein and his cabal, must feel,” she said in a long social media post on Saturday. At a news conference before the vote Tuesday featuring several of Epstein’s victims, Greene directly clapped back at the president for calling her a traitor: “Let me tell you what a traitor is. A traitor is an American that serves foreign countries and themselves. A patriot is an American that serves the United

States of America, and Americans like the women standing behind me.” Ouch.
In some ways, the three Republican women were perfectly positioned to force the Epstein issue. Mace loves the media spotlight, has a history of going against her party’s leadership (just ask Kevin McCarthy, whom she helped oust as speaker) and, more to the point, has long championed the victims of sexual abuse, a horror she has talked about enduring herself. Boebert and Greene are some of the House’s rowdiest, most antiestablishment zealots, and while their ultra-MAGA credentials have led them to stick with Trump in the past, those credentials now make it harder for Trump to dismiss them as faithless RINO squishes — though Lord knows he’s trying.
A tiny group of women taking a stand on a sex scandal may seem an awkward fit for a Republican Party awash in machismo. Girl power or women’s solidarity or “believing women” has never played all that well within the party. For all their talk about God-given gender differences, Republicans can be squirrelly when it comes to gendered political perspectives. For years, I listened to numerous party players pooh-pooh the very notion of “women’s issues.” More recently, the emerging view seems to be that the feminization of politics and culture is destroying America.
And yet. Women make up only 14% of the House Republican conference (about 15% if you count nonvoting delegates), but they accounted for 75% of the Republicans who forced Tuesday’s Epstein vote. That math intrigues me.
Sadly, most of the Republican women in the House lacked the stomach for this fight. They sat on the sidelines for weeks, letting their more audacious colleagues absorb the president’s wrath. Then, after Trump folded and gave the go-ahead to support the bill, all but one member of the conference rushed to get on the right side of the vote. (Two
members did not cast votes.)
This spineless opportunism disappointed me more in some lawmakers than in others. Rep. Elise Stefanik of New York, a member of the House Republican leadership, spent her pre-MAGA years in Congress striving to make her party more friendly to women. Given that she recently announced a run for governor of New York, you’d think she’d be looking for ways to reassure home-state voters that she is indeed more than just a Trump toady. Throwing her weight behind the Epstein files petition could have been a prime opportunity. Heavy sigh.
It will be interesting to see where this fight goes from here. Following the House’s near-unanimous passage, the Senate was reportedly looking to quickly follow suit.
This speaks well of Republican senators’ sense of selfpreservation. The party’s pathetic showing in the recent elections suggests voters are growing weary of Trumpian chaos, corruption and moral degeneracy. Republican lawmakers would be smart to start distancing themselves from their president’s worst impulses and excesses, to begin scraping off the layers of moral grime accumulated through their years of bootlicking.
Trump will take such attempts badly. But if Republican lawmakers need any advice on how to man up and grow a spine, I can think of a few of their female colleagues in the House they can ask.

This article contains minor spoilers for “Predator: Badlands.”
When it comes to movie franchises, the “Predator” one has never been considered elite, despite a loyal fandom. It doesn’t have the cultural impact of “Star Wars,” the techno-goth aura of “Alien,” the Tom Cruiseness of “Mission: Impossible” or the comics-based support system of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
And yet the release of the ninth entry in the series, “Predator: Badlands,” is getting big exposure along with a positive early reception. How did we get here?
The “Predator” franchise is named after its title character, a fearsome humanoid creature who travels the galaxies to pursue big-game hunting, often of the human kind. This race of warriors, known as the Yautja, first appeared in John McTiernan’s “Predator” (1987), a classic hybrid of the science fiction, survival and horror genres in which Arnold Schwarzenegger played the final commando. Sequels and spinoffs followed, including two crossovers with the “Alien” franchise.
Yet it looked as if Shane Black’s inane and confusingly titled “The Predator” (2018) had left the series as dead as a showpiece in a Yautja’s trophy case. Even the “Badlands” director Dan Trachtenberg, a longtime fan, admitted that the property “has gone up and down.”
“Every single entry has really cool parts,” he said in a video interview from Los Angeles, “but as a whole they haven’t all held together.”
Trachtenberg, 44, has spent the past few years trying his darnedest to change that, first with “Prey” (2022), in which a Yautja faces a young Comanche woman in the 18th century, then with the time-hopping animated anthology “Predator: Killer of Killers,” which came out in June. These movies went straight to Hulu (where the entire franchise is available) but the positive reception they encountered was likely a factor in “Badlands” getting a fancy theatrical release.
Now that we are back in the “Predator” world, here is a refresher on the franchise, as well as what to know about the new film.
What exactly is a Predator?
The Yautja are a race of apex warriors
who live to hunt — at least we don’t know of any other hobbies. They do it to eat, but mostly they do it to challenge themselves. The movies have established that they have been at this for millennia, as evidenced by trophies from a wide array of galaxies, time periods and species. Their advanced technology (powerful spaceships, invisibility cloaks, laser-guided weapons and more) helps them track and kill their targets.
What is “Badlands” about?
The biggest gamble is that the story, which takes place in a far future, is told from a Yautja’s perspective — specifically one named Dek (Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi). “The movie wasn’t really like, ‘Let’s do “Predator” but from the Predator’s POV,’” Trachtenberg said. “It was taking the creature, taking that monster, and putting him on a journey that was like what the humans in the movies go through. So it’s really an inversion of the premise.”
OK, so what’s Dek hunting then?
We first encounter our hero — and yes, he is definitely a heroic figure — on his home planet, Yautja Prime, duking it out with both his brother (Michael Homick) and his father (Schuster-Koloamatangi again). To prove his worth, Dek, who is the runt of his family, decides to travel to the hostile planet Genna, where he aims to bag the Kalisk. That creature is reputed to be unkillable, which of course makes it even more attractive to a Yautja with a chip on his shoulder.
Do I need to have seen the previous installments to follow?
“Badlands” works as a stand-alone, but as usual with franchises, a certain familiarity with the previous movies adds to the enjoyment. Knowing the fundamentals of the earlier installments also helps to appreciate the film’s thematic connection with the original: Trachtenberg sees “Dek going through a gauntlet the way that Dutch goes through,” he said, referring to the Schwarzenegger character from the first movie.
Predators are known to not be particularly easy on the eyes — good thing they wear a cool helmet.
For most of the film, Dek does not wear the Yautja’s iconic face protection, letting the audience appreciate his mandibles in all their glory. “We realized, ‘Man, we’ve got to see those eyes,’” Trachtenberg said, referring to the Yautja’s surprisingly expressive peepers. “Then

the idea was, maybe the mask breaks part of the way through and he’s wearing a half mask. It would have been much easier on the VFX budget and easier to accomplish, and still keep the iconography of the Predator that we all love. But the whole point here is it’s a monster,” he continued, “and the thing that you haven’t seen is taking that ugly mother-effer and connecting with it, rooting for it.”
This is messing with my head. Does the Predator at least have his gadgets?
Yes and no. Dek does have a wrist gauntlet, the accessory that in previous movies has had a seemingly limitless range of abilities. He also wields a cool sword with a laser option. But for parts of the film, he must show resourcefulness. “I put him through a real trial,” Trachtenberg said. He explained that he wanted to put Dek in a situation similar to that of a human facing a weaponed-up Predator, so we could see, as he put it, “what this guy’s truly made of.”
How does Elle Fanning figure in the plot?
Fanning plays Thia and Tessa, synthetics, or synths, from the nefarious Weyland-Yutani Corp. — yes, the one from the “Alien” universe. This is not random, as the two franchises’ paths have crossed for quite a while: We caught a glimpse of a Xenomorph skull in a Predator’s trophy case as early as “Predator 2,” back in 1990. The full-blown crossovers, the so-called “AvP” films, are of varying quality: Paul W.S. Anderson’s pretty decent “Alien
vs. Predator” (2004), a “Raiders of the Lost Ark”-like adventure in which the lead human baddie is a certain Charles Bishop Weyland; and the Strause Brothers’ “Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem” (2007), the single worst entry in the whole franchise.
So where are the humans, then? Nowhere to be seen, which is quite rare for a live-action feature. “Just because there’s no humans in the movie doesn’t mean that there aren’t characters that you can really connect to,” Trachtenberg said. “And I knew if we had any humans in the movie, it would become like ‘AvP’ — we’ve seen Predators and humans team up before,” he continued. “If there was a human in the movie, that would become the premise, as opposed to really sticking to our guns of, ‘This is a ride you have not taken before.’”

Wall Street stocks advanced on Monday, extending Friday’s rally as increased odds that the U.S. Federal Reserve will lower its key Fed funds target rate in December helped investors look past concerns over inflated tech valuations.
U.S. indexes embarked on a holiday-shortened week with solid gains, with gains in the “Magnificent Seven” group of artificial intelligence-related momentum stocks sending the tech-heavy Nasdaq up 2.7%.
A flurry of economic reports, belatedly released after the recent six-week government shutdown, hinted at labor market weakness and stubbornly elevated inflation, which has bolstered investor optimism that the Fed will implement its third and final interest rate cut of 2025 at the conclusion of its December monetary meeting.
Investors ‘breathe sigh of relief’
Dovish commentary from Fed Governor Christopher Waller and New York Fed President John Williams lent some support to that optimism, although other policymakers voiced dissenting opinions.
“When New York Fed President John Williams told us that a December rate cut was still on the table, I think that gave investors the reason to breathe a sigh of relief,” said Sam Stovall, chief investment strategist of CFRA Research in New York.
Financial markets are pricing in a 79.1% likelihood of that occurring, up from 42.4% a week ago, according to CME’s FedWatch tool.
The unusually timed release of economic data is set to continue this week, with retail sales, producer prices, and new orders for durable goods joining independent indicators such as Case-Shiller home prices, the Conference Board’s consumer confidence report and the National Association of Realtors’ pending home sales data.
Third-quarter reporting season is drawing to a close. As of Friday, nearly 95% of the companies in the S&P 500 have reported, 83% of which delivered better than expected earnings. Analysts now expect third-quarter aggregate earnings growth of 14.7% for constituents of the bellwether index, a significant improvement over the 8.8% estimate on October 1, according to LSEG data.

Among the 11 major sectors of the S&P 500, communication services (.SPLRCL), enjoyed the largest percentage gain. Consumer staples (.SPLRCS), and energy stocks (.SPNY), were lower.
The U.S. holiday shopping season kicks off this week, starting with Thursday’s Thanksgiving holiday.
The health of the consumer, who shoulders about 70% of the U.S. economy, will be assessed for any signs of weakness amid increased layoff announcements and weak survey reports. Even so, the National Retail Federation expects holiday sales to top $1 trillion for the first time.
Earnings from consumer-oriented companies such as Best Buy (BBY.N), are expected later this week.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Monday that Ukraine was at a “critical moment” and would soon determine its next steps, after negotiations with American officials over the weekend to revise a U.S.-backed proposal aimed at ending the war with Russia.
High-level discussions held in Geneva on Sunday were an attempt to address the concerns of Ukraine and its European allies about an early draft of the proposal, which many Ukrainians had deemed overly favorable to Moscow.
The White House and Ukraine’s presidency released a joint statement overnight saying “meaningful progress” had been made toward “aligning positions.” They said the talks had resulted in an “updated and refined” draft — with “intensive work” set to continue in the coming days.
On Monday, Zelenskyy said that Ukraine’s delegation was returning home and would deliver a full report about the progress of the talks.
“Based on these reports, we will determine the next steps and the timing,” he said in a statement on the social site X.
President Donald Trump is pushing Ukraine to agree to a settlement plan by Thursday, though he has indicated that talks could continue if they are going well. U.S. officials have said that they want to strike a deal with Ukraine that can then be presented to Russia.
U.S. and Ukrainian officials declined to say what parts of the proposal were adjusted in Geneva. Zelenskyy said that Ukraine had “managed to keep extremely sensitive points on the table,” including the release of all Ukrainian prisoners of war and the return of Ukrainian children abducted by Russia.
“But to achieve real peace, more, more is needed,” he told a parliamentary summit earlier on Mon-
day, calling this a “critical moment” for Ukraine.
“Of course, we’ll continue working with partners, especially the United States, and look for compromises that strengthen, but not weaken us,” he added.
At least one European leader suggested that there were still wide gaps in the discussions.
“The negotiations were a step forward, but there are still major issues which remain to be resolved,” the leader, President Alexander Stubb of Finland, wrote on social media.
Another official, Johann Wadephul, the German foreign minister, suggested on German public radio that the plan had

been revised to address objections to the provision ruling out NATO membership for Ukraine.
“All questions concerning Europe, as well as those concerning NATO, have been removed from this plan,” Wadephul said.
“Now we must ensure,” he added, “that Ukraine’s sovereignty will be preserved.”
Secretary of State Marco Rubio told reporters on Sunday that the unresolved issues in the peace proposal were not “insurmountable,” expressing optimism before he left Geneva that a deal could soon be reached. Still, he acknowledged that Russia “will have to agree to this,” and it was unclear when talks would turn to Moscow.

Ukrainian and American officials were expected on Monday, Nov. 24, 2025, to continue negotiating a U.S.-backed proposal to end the war with Russia, after what both sides described as “highly productive” talks over the weekend to revise a plan that many Ukrainians had deemed overly favorable to Moscow. The Kremlin said on Monday that it had not yet “officially” received any information about the outcome of the Geneva discussions. Russia was open to contacts and negotiations but had “no concrete details concerning talks involving us,” the Kremlin spokesperson, Dmitry Peskov, told reporters. He added that Russia did not plan to hold talks with American officials this week. European leaders held their own meeting about the peace proposal negotiations while in Angola for a summit with the African Union.
Ursula von der Leyen, the European Commission president, told reporters afterward that while “works remains to be done” on the peace plan, the Geneva talks helped ensure that “there is now a solid basis for moving forward.”
The key principles that Europe wants to see reflected in any peace plan include respect for Ukraine’s territory and sovereignty, she said. Ukraine’s allies are expected to meet again on Tuesday by videoconference.
“Only Ukraine, as a sovereign country, can make decisions regarding their armed forces,” von der Leyen said. “The choice of their destiny is in their own hands.”

The grisly killings of a husband and wife set off a new wave of sectarian unrest over the weekend in Homs, one of Syria’s largest and most diverse cities.
The bodies of the couple, members of a prominent Bedouin tribe, were found Sunday in their home just south of Homs, Syria’s third-largest city. The wife’s body showed signs of burning and sectarian slogans were also found at the crime scene, according to the Syrian state news agency, SANA.
After a wave of reprisal attacks, security forces were deployed across Homs to contain the unrest and the authorities imposed a night curfew Sunday, which was later extended to Monday evening. By Monday, the violence around the city appeared to have subsided, according to SANA.
The unrest was the latest test for Syria’s government which, after less than a year in power, has already faced several waves of sectarian bloodshed that have killed thousands of people. The country’s deep sectarian divides have proven to be one of the biggest challenges for the government as it strives to unite and stabilize the country after nearly 14 years of civil war and decades of dictatorship. It still does not have full control over all regions.
Homs has long been a microcosm of Syria’s sectarian fault lines. The city’s population includes Sunni Muslims, the majority in Syria, as well as Alawites, Christians and Shiite Muslims. Its central location, on the highway linking the two largest cities — Damascus and Aleppo — made it a strategic prize for both the Assad government and its rebel opponents during the civil war.
Homs was an early flashpoint of the uprising against Pre-
sident Bashar Assad that began in 2011, and it was one of the most devastated cities in the conflict. Entire districts were pulverized by government aerial bombardments, and parts of Homs endured a nearly two-year siege, with acute shortages of food, before rebel fighters were forced to evacuate in 2014.
The fighting drove out tens of thousands of residents, leaving large areas in ruins and altering the city’s demographic makeup.
In the year since rebels swept to power in Syria, Homs has remained fractured, and in recent months, it has been the site of a series of sectarian-style killings, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which has documented multiple attacks on Alawite civilians in the city and surrounding countryside.

Russia’s disinformation efforts across Latin America have intensified over the past two years, partly aimed at sowing discord between the United States and its allies in the region, according to an American diplomatic cable and new report by watchdog groups.
The campaign is spearheaded by Kremlin-owned media outlets such as Sputnik and RT, officials say, describing an effort to stoke anti-American sentiment, especially in Mexico, the world’s largest Spanish-speaking nation and Washington’s biggest trade partner.
In April 2024, U.S. diplomats in Mexico City raised alarms over the “sudden and dramatic expansion” of RT in the country, according to an internal diplomatic cable titled “Mexico: RT’s Invasion” and reviewed by The New York Times.
“RT’s aggressive investment in Mexico and its strategy to build its credibility and undermine the United States, poses a threat to current popular perception,” the cable reads, adding, “mission Mexico needs more resources to counter RT’s wellfunded efforts.”
The Russian Embassy in Mexico City denied that Moscow was spreading disinformation, calling Sputnik and RT, formerly called Russia Today, unbiased alternatives to American media.
The U.S. Embassy cable says the audience of “RT en Español” catapulted online, from 191,000 views on the social platform X in 2022 to 715 million a year later. With RT widely blocked in Europe and the United States, the network scaled up its presence in Latin America, a potential audience of some 670 million people.
The embassy cable partly blamed the “allegedly sympathetic abettors in President López Obrador’s administration” for the expansion of Kremlin-owned media outlets in Mexico.
Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s term as Mexico’s president ended in October 2024. The party that he founded, Morena, still governs Mexico and includes officials sympathetic to
Russia, current and former U.S. officials say.
López Obrador and Morena officials did not respond to requests for comment.
British and French officials raised concerns with Mexico’s Foreign Ministry about Russia’s activities, according to three people familiar with the discussions. The ministry declined to comment.
The cable’s findings were supported by a 2024 Justice Department investigation that uncovered a Russian government-sponsored influence campaign called Doppelgänger, targeting American citizens and Washington’s allies.
“The campaign intended to encourage ‘anti-American sentiment’ as well as to exacerbate confrontation between the United States and Mexico,” according to a Justice Department affidavit in the case, which closed down websites involved in the campaign.
While it is unclear whether the operation is still trying to drive a wedge between Washington and Mexico, Kremlinsponsored media outlets continue to publish Spanish-language content discrediting the United States.
This year, former President Dmitri Medvedev accused Ukraine and the United States of recruiting Mexican and Colombian cartels to fight Russia, an accusation picked up by Spanish-language media in the region. That followed a similar accusation spread by the Russian Embassy in Mexico City, which was shared by several Morena politicians.
Those claims appeared to draw from the stories of Colombian military veterans who, largely driven by financial reasons, volunteered to fight for Ukraine.
One official who has regularly shared Russian government media content on social media is Jenaro Villamil, head of Mexico’s State Broadcasting System, which controls hundreds of TV and radio stations nationwide.
Villamil said that he shares news from various outlets and that his personal account does not represent the government.
Last year, he shared a Sputnik article linking the U.S.

The Observatory reported that armed Bedouin tribesmen retaliated to the couple’s killing by attacking a neighborhood of Homs populated predominantly by Alawites.
The Alawite minority practices an offshoot of Shiite Islam, and the Assad family, who belong to the sect, gave members of the group preferential treatment during its decadeslong dictatorship. The Bedouins descend from nomadic tribes and, like Syria’s new leaders, are part of the country’s Sunni Muslim majority.
The attackers set homes ablaze, vandalized property and opened fire indiscriminately, the Observatory said. At least 18 people were injured, according to local health officials.
Maj. Gen. Murhaf al-Naasan, the head of the government’s internal security forces in Homs, said in a statement Sunday that the couple’s killing “appears to have the goal
of fueling sectarian divisions and undermining stability in the region.” He and other Syrian officials appealed for calm.
Since Islamist rebels overthrew Assad a year ago, repeated episodes of sectarian-fueled bloodshed involving minority groups have raised doubts about whether the rebel leadership is capable of protecting Syria’s mosaic of ethnic and religious minorities.
Despite public assurances by officials that minorities should feel safe, many members of those communities remain mistrustful of the new authorities, who have struggled repeatedly to keep sectarian tensions from cascading into widespread bloodshed.
At times, sectarian violence has been perpetrated by government security forces themselves or fighters linked to or aligned with them, a recent investigation by The New York Times found.
In March, what began as an ambush by pro-Assad gunmen on government security forces along Syria’s coast des-
Drug Enforcement Administration to the 2021 assassination of Haiti’s president, adding: “another DEA intervention in Latin America.” While a former freelance DEA informant was linked to the killing, he had stopped working for the agency before then.
Across Latin America, RT has also held training sessions for journalists and students, according to a new investigation by the German Marshall Fund, a Washington-based research group, and Factchequeado, a nonprofit that monitors Spanish media.
During recent RT training for journalists in Venezuela, the room erupted into chants of “Long live Russia!” and “Long live Putin!” according to the investigation.
In Mexico, RT has built a partnership with the Journalists Club, an industry association that has received funding from Mexico’s Senate. The club has also hosted RT for training sessions.
The club’s biweekly magazine consistently publishes RT articles, with roughly 53% of its content from Kremlin-owned media outlets since April, according to the investigation.
Mouris Salloum George, the president of the club, said the magazine started republishing Russian government media because RT approached it offering free content.
Some Western experts worry that Washington is outmatched in the information war, especially after the Trump administration moved to dismantle an office that counters disinformation and also Voice of America, the U.S.-run news agency founded to fight Nazi propaganda.
“This is the problem: You have the U.S. retreating from the information space globally, and in comes Russia,” said Bret Schafer, a senior fellow at the German Marshall Fund.
“There remains a bit of a Cold War mentality about Russia taking it to the U.S. in their own backyard because they feel like the U.S. does it to them and their so-called sphere of influence,” he said. “To gain influence, Latin America has long been seen as a priority for the Russians.”
cended into a sectarian killing spree that left at least 1,400 dead, most of them Alawites.
Two months later, another outbreak of sectarian violence, just outside Damascus, killed more than 100 people.
Then, in July, a highway robbery by armed Bedouins near the southern city of Sweida spiraled into sectarian violence that killed about 2,000 people — many from the Druze religious minority — according to the Observatory.
Syrian leaders are eager to maintain stability so as not to reverse their significant progress in rebuilding ties with the outside world since coming to power. To that end, the authorities responded swiftly to the violence in Homs on Sunday to prevent an escalation.
“Despite the enormity of the crime and the impulsive reactions of some residents seeking revenge, the state and society alike succeeded in containing the criminals’ efforts before they could escalate,” Syria’s information minister, Hamza al-Mustafa, said in a statement.
“The issue of civil peace is at the forefront of the Syrian government’s priorities, and undoubtedly much work remains to be done,” he said.

Mexico is now the world’s top buyer of U.S. goods, according to data released by the U.S. government Wednesday, outpacing Canada for the first time in nearly 30 years.
The data highlighted how Mexico and the United States have, despite periodic political tensions, become deeply intertwined in business, and how much global trade patterns have shifted in a short period. Only two years ago, Mexico became the country that sold the most goods to the United States, surpassing China.
“Mexico is the United States’ main trading partner,” said Marcelo Ebrard, Mexico’s economy minister, during the president’s daily news conference Wednesday.
The data, released by the U.S. Commerce Department on Wednesday, also showed how President Donald Trump’s sweeping global tariffs took a toll on overall trade in August, as taxes on exports from about 90 countries went into effect.
Canada had for decades been the biggest buyer of U.S. goods, but it has slowly lost ground to Mexico over the years, and it has had a far more combative economic relationship with Trump since his second term began. While the Trump administration has imposed steep tariffs on some exports from Canada, Trump has repeatedly carved out exemptions for Mexico after negotiations with its president, Claudia Sheinbaum, and her representatives.
From January to August, the new

particularly its middle class, the country of over 130 million people has hungered for more U.S. goods, according to experts.
The sectors in which Mexico has purchased more U.S. goods over the years, according to his analysis, include meat; cereals like corn, for humans and animals; fuel, which has helped Mexico as it has struggled to refine its own crude oil; and iron and steel.
Tariffs have affected Mexico’s economy — it was expected to grow modestly at only 1% this year — but they have had less of an effect than first projected.
Reasons for that, experts say, include Mexico’s proximity, logistical infrastructure, labor costs and increasingly skilled workforce as significant factors.
data showed, the U.S. exported $1.4 trillion worth of goods, with $225.6 billion heading to Canada and $226.4 billion to Mexico. (In 2024, the United States exported $349.4 billion to Canada and $334 billion to Mexico.)
“Today is the inflection point,” said Alfonso Muñoz, an economist at De la Calle Madrazo Mancera, an economic consulting firm in Mexico City. “There is a very high complementarity between the economies of Mexico and the United States.”
The trend was expected to hold as long as there were no major economic crises or interruptions to the current trade agreement among the United States, Mexico and Canada, Muñoz said.
Because of free-trade deals since 1994, the economies and supply chains of North America’s three giants have gradually become more interdependent. But over the decades, Canada’s share of U.S. exports has slowly decreased while Mexico’s has increased.
“The political weight, the importance that Mexico can have, is much greater than we think,” Muñoz said. “Even though there’s political noise or trade confrontation, Mexico continues to be the main supplier, and now it’s become the main buyer,” he added.
Mexico and the United States share what is considered the busiest land border in the world. As Mexico has grown,
Mexico’s leading exports to the United States are cars, machinery, electronics, medical devices, fruits and vegetables. So far this year, U.S. data show that its imports from Mexico have totaled $354.9 billion — up from the same period in 2024 — followed by imports from Canada and China.
Sheinbaum has been pushing a plan to grow and diversify Mexico’s economy. Ebrard, the economy minister, on Wednesday boasted of a record amount of direct foreign investment, nearly $41 billion, for the final trimester of this year.
“For foreign investment, the No. 1 source is also the United States,” he said. “So I see that the international community or the market is very much in favor of our country, and that trend is going to solidify. Now the challenge is to put our national investment on the same track.”

Some 2,000 years ago, a macabre ritual was observed in the northeastern Iberian Peninsula, a region of Spain known today as Catalonia. In several settlements, the skulls of the dead were publicly exhibited: on porches, or mounted on walls and stakes. Most unsettling, some had iron nails driven through them.
Dozens of such skulls, dating to the Iron Age, or roughly 800 B.C. to 218 B.C., have been found across the area since 1904. Scholarly theories about them have fallen into two camps: The skulls were either respected ancestral relics or war trophies meant to induce fear in local rivals, depending on the tribe.
But in a recent paper in The Journal of Archaeological Science, Rubén de la Fuente-Seoane, an archaeologist at the Autonomous University of Barcelona, argues that those hypotheses alone are too simplistic; more likely, the meaning of the skulls depended on whom they belonged to and where they were placed. “Our study shows that it may be a mistake to have to choose only one option,” he said.
De la Fuente-Seoane and his research team examined seven skulls from two Iberian Peninsula settlements, Puig Castellar and Ullastret. Both sites were established around the sixth century B.C., a time when political violence intensified, as shown by the appearance of weapons in burials and evidence of fatal injuries, including beheadings, in human remains. Between 350 B.C. and 200 B.C., the northern Iberian Peninsula village of La Hoya, located on a trade route in the fertile Ebro River valley, was destroyed in what is believed to have been a politically motivated massacre.
Archaeological findings from 2020 indicated that attackers burned the village and left the remains of the conquered where they fell. Examination of the bodies revealed fatal injuries from bladed metal weapons, with some victims decapitated or dismembered. Valuables were deliberately ignored, leading the researchers to speculate that the attack was carried out by a neighboring faction seeking regional control and total annihilation of the settlement.
Puig Castellar is situated on a hill with a commanding view of the coast. Ullastret is inland and was the capi-

tal of the territory known as Indiketes. The two settlements were abandoned by the late third or early second century B.C., probably in response to invading Romans.
De la Fuente-Seoane reasoned that by analyzing the ratio of different atomic isotopes in the skulls’ tooth enamel, his team would be able to determine whether they belonged to locals or outsiders. Presumably, the skulls of locals would have been venerated, whereas those of outsiders would have been kept as badges of honor.
Isotopes of the element strontium make their way from the local soil and water into the tooth enamel of whoever consumes them, and serve as a geological identifier of where food was grown. Because tooth enamel forms in childhood and does not change, it permanently records where a person was raised.
Similarly, scientists can trace where people lived by studying oxygen isotopes in their drinking water, which reflect environmental conditions such as temperature, altitude and proximity to the sea. When paired with strontium data, this information helps reconstruct an individual’s geographic history and movements.
De la Fuente-Seoane and his research team used this technique on four skulls found in prominent locations near the exterior walls and main entrance to Puig Castellar. The results showed that three of the skulls — from an adolescent and two adults younger than 35 — were most likely from other areas, while the fourth, whose age was undetermined, was probably from a local.

This led de la Fuente-Seoane to propose that the deliberate effort to make the remains of the outsiders visible on structures such as fortified walls or gates was meant to be a show of force, warding off both internal and external adversaries.
Based on their analysis of three nailed skulls
from the Ullastret site, researchers concluded that locals and foreign enemies were treated differently in death. The three skulls belonged to adults younger than 40. Two were found to be from residents of the Ullastret community and were showcased in homes. De la Fuente-Seoane said that those skulls might have been used as tributes by the individuals’ families, a way of honoring their relatives as important community members.
“Some classical texts mention the use of cedar oil in the treatment of preserved heads kept as trophies,” de la Fuente-Seoane said. In a 2016 study involving organic residue analysis of several skulls from Ullastret, researchers looked for vestiges of such residues but found none.
A third Ullastret skull, deemed to be of foreign origin, was discovered in a ditch outside the settlement’s walls. This suggests that it, too, was a military trophy, but its placement in a less conspicuous location implies a different symbolic use than that of the skulls outside Puig Castellar. De la Fuente-Seoane wondered if the third skull could be linked to the Gaulish practice of using skulls as religious offerings or spoils of war, after which they were stored in pits.
However, he said, this cannot be proven without knowing the skull’s original context. He also cautioned that more research was needed, such as broader isotope analyses, to reliably support the initial findings.
Jordi Principal, director of the History Museum of Catalonia, said he was surprised to learn that the two hypotheses — reverent remembrance and trophy-taking — are nonexclusive, and that both practices coexisted.
He observed that “the evidence seems to suggest that perhaps not all of the tribes considered this practice in the same way, which would be probably determined by the sociocultural context of each community.” Nevertheless, he said, the exhibition of the skulls consistently served a single purpose: to express and project power.

Tens of thousands of lives could be saved if more people got screened for lung cancer, according to a new study.
Each year, lung cancer kills nearly 125,000 people in the United States — more than breast, colorectal and cervical cancers combined. The paper, published on Wednesday in the Journal of the American Medical Association, found that lung cancer screenings could prevent 62,000 deaths over a five-year period, or four times as many as are being saved today.
The screening itself is a straightforward CT scan that captures far more detail than an X-ray, said Priti Bandi, scientific director at the American Cancer Society, who led the research.
Getting this yearly scan can help catch lung cancer in its early stages, when the five-year survival rate is 60%. But almost half of lung cancers are caught in their late stages, when patients have less than a 10% chance of surviving.
“The number of lives saved by early detection completely eclipses the lives we can save with drugs for advanced lung cancer,” said Dr. Douglas Wood, chair of surgery at University of Washington Medicine.
Why are screening rates so low?
To qualify for annual lung cancer screening, you must be 50 to 80 years old and have a significant smoking history, according to guidelines from the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force. That means you must have smoked cigarettes within the past 15 years and averaged a pack a day for at least 20 years — or an equivalent amount, like two packs a day for 10 years. (While radon and air pollution are other major causes of lung cancer, the guidelines do not currently take these hazards into account.)
About 70% to 80% of eligible Americans get mammograms, colonoscopies and Pap smears, but this study found that only 18% of eligible individuals receive lung cancer screening. “That’s abysmal,” said Dr. Mara Schonberg, a primary care physician at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center who researches cancer detection. The screening rates were lower among people in their 50s and healthier individuals.
Beyond saving tens of thousands of lives, if every eligible person were to get screened, the study estimated it would add about 14 years, on average, to the life of every person spared, Bandi said.
But it’s not always easy to get people tested. More than 60% of Americans don’t know that lung cancer screening is available. Many longtime smokers also assume they’ll be blamed if lung cancer is found, Wood said, and smoking is concentrated among low-income people, who already struggle to access care.
But one of the biggest obstacles may be simply figuring out who qualifies, said Dr. Drew Moghanaki, chief of thoracic oncology at UCLA Health.
Unlike other cancer screenings, where eligibility hinges only on age, lung cancer screening requires doctors to reconstruct people’s smoking history over decades. Some people might smoke different amounts at different times, or quit and restart. So, it’s time-consuming, if not impossible, for doctors to get an accurate smoking history, said Dr. Alison Rustagi, a primary care physician at the University
of California, San Francisco, and strict eligibility cutoffs mean that being slightly off can disqualify someone.
“The lung cancer screening criteria is the most complicated of all screening criteria,” Moghanaki said. “It’s a mathematical rubric.”
Should the eligibility criteria be simplified?
Experts say that the current eligibility guidelines aim to capture those at the highest risk but don’t include about 50% of people who develop lung cancer.
So, this new study modeled the benefit of screening smokers who are not currently eligible — like those who quit more than 15 years ago or who smoked less than a pack a day for 20 years — and estimated another 30,000 lives could be saved. Screening people based on smoking duration, regardless of their quit date, could correct some biases in the current criteria and make it easier to assess eligibility, said Dr. Michael Gieske, a primary care physician at St. Elizabeth’s Healthcare in Kentucky.
Other experts urge more caution.

The study didn’t account for the risks of lung cancer screening, such as false positives, anxiety and unnecessary tests, Schonberg said. These risks are immediate, but the benefits may not appear for years, if at all, she added.
The estimate of 62,000 lives saved also depends on assumptions that may not hold up in the real world. To make that calculation, the researchers presumed that participants got three CT scans and that screening cuts lung cancer deaths by 20%, based on a 2011 trial. But screening technology, follow-up protocols and tumor management have changed since then. So that number could be considerably different today, Rustagi said.
Yet even with these uncertainties, this study emphasizes how the United States is leaving one of its most powerful tools against cancer deaths on the table, Moghanaki said.
“This study shows just how big an opportunity we have to avert deaths and save lives,” he added.

MANAGUA, Nicaragua – “The objective has been more than achieved—beyond one hundred percent. This is the most meaningful victory I’ve had in my life,” were the first words of captain Héctor Lavergne after lifting the trophy that crowns Puerto Rico as back-to-back champions of the NORCECA Boys’ U17 Continental Championship. With a 3–1 victory (25–23, 25–22, 18–25, 25–22) over Cuba, the Puerto Ricans also secured their ticket to the World Championship.
In a thrilling and evenly matched final, Puerto Rico effectively managed its resources to overcome a resilient Cuban team that never gave up. Puerto Rico made the difference in blocking (8–5) and attacking (49–43), while both teams committed 34 errors.
Elvis González was the top scorer with 20 points, followed by Jayden Figueroa with 8. For Cuba, standout performers included Víctor Contreras (19), Reinaldo Márquez (13), and Dalian La O (12).
The back-to-back championship comes two years after Puerto Rico claimed its first title in Mexico, also with a 3–1 win in the final. Now, with their sights set on the World Championship, Lavergne noted that the team is preparing for “another level, with plenty of time,
practices, and conditioning to go far.”
Head coach Hernán Torrez closed the day with words of gratitude: “We are beyond happy; this work has been in progress for a long time, even though this is a new cycle because these young athletes are just beginning. This goes out to many dedicated people in our country, such as Mr. Trabanco, Carlos de Sevilla, Noel Barrero, and Kike Ruiz. We pray that God blesses them, and we thank them for this opportunity given to us and to these boys who became champions for the second consecutive year.”
The Puerto Rican Volleyball Federation President, Dr. César Trabanco, stated that “the federation is more than satisfied, as it has fulfilled its role related to the athletic and health components. Our vision and mission are to ensure the physical and mental development of our young athletes, and we have accomplished that. We are extremely pleased with the work carried out.”
This achievement reaffirms the commitment of the Puerto Rican Volleyball Federation to the integral development of our athletes and to the dignified representation of Puerto Rico on the international stage.

The president added in his closing remarks that “this tournament marks the conclusion of our indoor volleyball commitments for 2025. We still have beach volleyball events remaining. In the coming weeks we will have the last NORCECA tournament, which corresponds to the women’s team in Brazil”.
“After that, we conclude this year’s participation and will meet with the technical commission to evaluate the performance of each team, unifying planning for 2026. By December 31, we will be moving forward with all commitments for our coaches, including the establishment of their contracts”, concluded the president.

Asacrifice fly by Randal Díaz in the tenth inning kept the San Juan Senators on the winning track with a 4–3 victory over the Carolina Giants in the continuation of the Brava Lubricants Cup of the 2025–2026 Roberto Clemente Professional Baseball League (LBPRC in Spanish).
With the score tied 3–3 at the end of the ninth inning, the tie-breaker rule went into effect, placing a runner on second base with no outs for both teams at the start of every extra inning.
The inning started with the speedy Delvin Pérez at second, and Roberto Hernández going down on strikes. Pérez advanced to within 90 feet of home on a wild pitch from reliever Ricardo Vélez, setting up the sacrifice fly that delivered San Juan’s third straight win. The Senators now tie the Mayagüez Indios and the Caguas Criollos for fourth place in La Pro standings with a 4–8 record. Meanwhile, Carolina remains in second place tied with the Ponce Leones at 7–5.
Vélez (0–1) took the loss after allowing the winning run in two innings of work, while Japanese pitcher Minato Aoyama (1–0) earned the victory despite giving up a run in one inning. Alexander Castro recorded his first save of the season.
Beyond the final result, what really hurt the Giants were their errors. A throwing error to first base by Japanese second baseman Ryuta Hirose, on a grounder from Darlin Moquete, gave the Senators their first run in the fourth inning.
The Giants turned to their specialty— small ball—to create their first threat. Import Josh Hatcher opened the fifth with a weak grounder handled by Senators starter Brady Tedesco. After striking out Yasser Mercedes, Carolina catcher Roberto “Bebo” Peña hit a single to place runners on first and second. Tedesco was replaced by Iván Houllemont, who walked leadoff hitter Gabriel Cancel to load the bases. Immediately afterward, Johnathan Rodríguez hit a double near the left-field wall, bringing in two runs and giving Carolina a 2–1 lead.
The Senators came back in the eighth
inning, capitalizing on two defensive errors. After one out, Randal Díaz reached first on an error by Giants third baseman Deniel Ortiz. Yariel González followed with a single to right to put runners on the corners. Then, a mistake by shortstop Gabriel Cancel—letting a grounder go between his legs—allowed San Juan to tie the game 2–2. In the next at-bat, Jadiel Sánchez hit a sacrifice fly to put the Senators ahead 3–2.
A sacrifice fly by Cancel brought the crowd at Roberto Clemente Walker Stadium to life, driving in the tying run, 3–3, on the legs of Ezequiel Pagán, who had entered as a pinch hitter and opened the Giants’ ninthinning offense with a triple.
Santurce earns its tenth victory
The Santurce Crabbers defeated the Mayagüez Indios for the second consecutive night, this time 5–2 at their home, Hiram Bithorn Stadium.
It was the tenth win for the Crabbers, while the Indios suffered their eighth loss in the first 12 games of the season.
Santurce took a decisive step in the bottom of the second when Shed Long Jr.
homered to right field to score the Crabbers’ first run. In the next inning, the Indios turned the scoreboard in their favor, 2–1, with singles by Isan Díaz and Anthony García.
A deep double to center by Roy Morales allowed Spencer Packard to race home all the way from first to tie the game 2–2 in the fourth inning. Then a single by Rubén Castro forced Indios starter Jorge López out of the game, replaced by Josimar Cousin. With runners on the corners, Cousin retired Long Jr. and Brian Rey on grounders for two outs, but Morales scored on Rey’s grounder to give Santurce a 3–2 lead.
The Crabbers pulled away 5–2 in the fifth inning with another RBI single by Castro to left.
Indios third baseman Emmanuel Rivera went 2-for-4, extending his hitting streak to nine games.
Left-handed reliever Jordan Morales (1–0) earned the win in one-third of an inning. His teammate Brian Escanio secured his first save of the season. For the Indios, López (0–1) took the loss after allowing three earned runs in three innings.
