Golf academy appeals DNER ruling renewing Carolina landfill permit

The Caribbean Golf Academy (CGA) has requested that the Department of Natural and Environmental Resources (DNER) reconsider its decision to renew the Carolina landfill permit.

The CGA argues that the DNER decision violates federal laws regarding ecologically sensitive areas, state environmental public policy, karst zone protection laws, and resource conservation laws -- all of which led to the agency’s establishment. They also contend that the decision is based on outdated or inapplicable regulations.

The request for reconsideration, submitted by Patricio Martínez Lorenzo, asserts that the environmental agency’s determination is incorrect due to a lack of substantial evidence, specific findings of fact, and legal conclusions pertinent to the case.

The CGA outlined 10 key points in its request, including the revocation of the Aug. 21 resolution signed by DNER Deputy Secretary Nelson Cruz Santiago and the findings of the examining officer, Luis González Ortiz. It seeks a denial of the permit renewal as requested and that the Municipality of Carolina be required to prepare an environmental impact statement conducted by third parties without financial interests in the landfill operation.

Additionally, the academy calls for an assessment of the site’s hydrogeology and plans for restoring or mitigating flora, fauna, and cultural values in the impacted area within the designated buffer zone. The DNER is also urged to comply with federal groundwater monitoring requirements, conduct a comprehensive hydrogeological characterization of the karst area, and prepare relevant findings of fact and conclusions under environmental law.

“There is no logical explanation for the Department’s insistence on granting this permit,” stated Luis Rivera Ortiz, president of the CGA and Hacienda Campo Rico. “We maintain that it violates laws and regulations, such as the requirement to prepare an Environmental Impact Statement in ecologically sensitive areas like the karst zone. It is unacceptable that the Municipality of Carolina celebrates what is clearly an environmental crime.”

He emphasized that the permit only covers five cuerdas (4.86 acres), excluding another 12 cuerdas (11.7 acres) that have also been filled with garbage by the landfill operator. The area falls within a 35-acre property previously expropriated by the Municipality of Carolina to create a buffer zone as a mitigation measure approved by the Puerto Rico Planning Board. However, the municipality has violated the permit by expanding the landfill without adherence to applicable laws and regulations, Rivera Ortiz said.

Patricio Martínez Lorenzo, the CGA’s lawyer stated that “[t]he absence of factual findings in the Examining Officer’s report and the Resolution signed by the [Deputy] Secretary makes it impossible to determine any substantial evidence supporting the recommendation for permit renewal, given the allegations presented by the Appearing Party.”

He pointed out that the examining officer’s document referenced Section 641 of the Regulations for the Management of Non-Hazardous Solid Waste (RMDSNP), which relates to construction permits rather than landfill operating permits. “Chapter IV of the repealed Regulation No. 5717 pertains to sanitary landfill systems; thus, the DNER evaluated the Municipal Autonomous Corporation of Carolina’s permit renewal using the incorrect regulatory provision, Rule 641 of the RMDSNP, instead of Regulation No. 9306,” the reconsideration request states. “This omission has significant consequences.”

Martínez Lorenzo noted further that the draft renewal permit fails to meet various requirements outlined in Regulation No. 9306 and the federal Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), particularly concerning municipal solid waste landfills, groundwater monitoring, and well standards. He added that the permit renewal was authorized without a thorough characterization of the underlying karst aquifer, an assessment of groundwater flow direction and velocity, the vulnerability of the karst aquifer, and the hydrogeological connectivity between the buffer zone and landfill operations.

He argued that the DNER did not adequately consider that the federal RCRA law imposes protections for sensitive areas, including aquifer recharge zones, wetlands, bodies of water, unstable geological features, and seismically active regions.

“The karst area where the landfill operates has unique geological characteristics that require proper evaluation,” the attorney noted. “The documentation in the administrative file or report does not sufficiently demonstrate compliance with existing federal groundwater monitoring standards.”

Bethel to transfer part of New Jersey operations to Barceloneta

Gov. Jenniffer González Colón, along with Economic Development and Commerce (DDEC) Secretary Sebastián Negrón Reichard, announced Monday that the textile company Bethel Protective Systems LLC will transfer part of its operations from New Jersey to the Palmas Altas Industrial Park in Barceloneta.

The move involves an $8 million investment that is expected to create 400 jobs over the next two years. The manufacturing plant will design, manufacture and produce military and commercial uniforms, as well as protective products, primarily for federal defense and security agencies.

“The military clothing manufacturing sector is strategically important given our nation’s military landscape and policy. Puerto Rico has decades of experience in textile and military manufacturing, establishing a reputation for reliable quality and contract fulfillment,” the governor said. “This investment will help diversify the island’s industrial base, generate jobs, and position us as a strategic center for textile manufacturing -- all while bearing the ‘Made in USA’ seal.”

González Colón added that “this investment stems from our administration’s proactive approach: Bethel spent six years searching for a location to expand its operations, and through our Executive Concierge service and the reshoring strategy established in Executive Order 2025-012, we secured this opportunity for Puerto Rico.”

Negrón Reichard said that with the arrival of Bethel, “we reaffirm Puerto Rico’s strength and competitiveness as a strategic supplier to the federal government for the manufacture of military uniforms and items.”

Negrón Reichard also noted that the reshoring effort has generated commitments of $274 million in investment and 2,186 jobs since the start of the current administration, positioning Puerto Rico as a key destination for such initiatives. He said the agency is supporting the project with a grant of $1,809,000 from the Economic Incentive Fund: $600,000 for job creation, $900,000 for machinery and equipment, and $309,000 for infrastructure.

Governor announces changes at PRASA, emergency order for water supply in Bayamón, Guaynabo

Gov. Jenniffer González Colón announced Monday that there will be changes in senior positions at the Puerto Rico Aqueduct and Sewer Authority (PRASA) and that she will sign an emergency executive order to address water shortages in Bayamón and Guaynabo.

She denied that privatizing the corporation is being considered.

“Names have been presented to me, and we do not rule out submitting more,” the governor said at a press conference. “The director of the San Juan region changed over the weekend, and other appointments will follow, in accordance with the recommendations of engineer Carlos Pesquera.”

“I will issue an emergency executive order for the Bayamón and Guaynabo areas,” she added. “The filtration plant has become too small for demand; we will replace 2- to 6-inch pipes and replace concrete with steel. The initial investment exceeds $10 million.”

The governor noted that the pressure problems in Santurce have been going on for years and that the main break in Cupey dates back to November 2024. She said her office and mayors from the mountain region will discuss measures for Naranjito, Corozal, Orocovis and Vega Alta, while PRASA implements operational and public policy changes.

Asked about the stability of the corporation’s executive president, Luis Reinaldo González Delgado, González Colón said he has her confidence, but insisted on further management adjustments.

“It’s not about change for the sake of change; it’s about changing the government,” she said. “We’re looking for skilled personnel.”

Regarding privatization talk, the governor was categorical: “That’s off the agenda,” she said.

The governor added that there is “$4 billion” in federally funded projects pending permitting and environmental studies, and that, since bond issues cannot be used, the purpose of the emergency declaration is to identify state resources for imme-

Benicio del Toro selected as ambassador of Millo Romero Foundation

Renowned Puerto Rican actor Benicio del Toro has become an official ambassador for the Millo Romero Foundation (FMR by its initials in Spanish).

His mission as ambassador is to encourage companies, foundations, and other entities to invest in transforming lives through sports, education, and recreation, as well as to mentor young basketball players supported by the foundation.

With an impressive artistic career that has earned him an Oscar, a Golden Globe, and numerous international accolades, del Toro adds his commitment to social causes to the legacy of Emilio “Millo” Romero, a Puerto Rican coach who shaped generations of young athletes on the island. As part of his collaboration, del Toro will host the Dream Ambassadors Cocktail Party to benefit the FMR, scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 25 at the Sheraton Convention Center.

The aforementioned players join the original FMR ambassadors: “Tuto” Marchand (Emeritus), Sammy Betancourt, Julio Toro, Flor Meléndez, Carlos Morales, Ramón Rivas, Rafael “Chino” Torres, Manolo Cintrón and Eddie Casiano. They too were influenced by Millo Romero’s teachings, both personally and in sports, and are part of the history of basketball in Puerto Rico.

Governor intends to eliminate PRITS, return functions to the OMB

Gov. Jenniffer González Colón said Monday that she is in the process of submitting a bill to the Legislature to eliminate the Office of Innovation and Technology Services (PRITS).

“This agency has not had a permanent director for the last five years. The last five years, so it precedes me,” the governor said at a press conference. “I believe we need to change public policy here. We are already drafting a bill to return PRITS to where it was previously, in the Office of Management and Budget.”

“I think this will generate savings. Right now, there’s a [acting] PRITS director named Poincaré Díaz, who was the person who was already directing the response to the cyberattack that occurred in April of this year,” González

Colón said. “So, he’s an employee of the agency; he’s running the agency, so it’s operational. But I think we’re going to change public policy to cut costs. Because [the Office of] Management and Budget is certainly managing the federal government’s broadband program, the federal funds received for these types of programs that include Wi-Fi in public spaces. The interconnection systems that would fall under PRITS are being handled by the Office of Management and Budget, which was where it was originally located. So, at some point, we’ll be filing that bill to return it to what it was before, and then the director would continue to perform those functions.

After Antonio Ramos Guardiola’s dismissal as the head of PRITS in April, Luis Rodríguez Vega was appointed.

At the end of June, his appointment was also withdrawn. Martín Jiménez Morales was then appointed during the

legislative recess, but was removed in September. The governor said Senate President Thomas Rivera Schatz expressed reservations about the appointment.

NPP Rep. Aponte calls new internal PDP regs ‘senseless’

New Progressive Party Rep. José Aponte Hernández on Monday called the Popular Democratic Party’s (PDP) new regulations, which establish a penalty of “indifference” toward members who create controversy within the party for personal gain, “senseless.” The veteran pro-statehood lawmaker pointed out that the new rules, meanwhile, do nothing to define the institutional position on the political relationship between Puerto Rico and the United States.

“Like everything within the Popular Party, there is no valid or even articulated position on political status in its new regulations, which makes the current president of that party, Pablo J. Hernández, the same as Alejandro García Padilla, José Luis Dalmau, Carlos “Charlie” Delgado, and Jesús Manuel Ortiz,” Aponte said. “None of them wanted to define their status because they would simply lose votes if they did.”

“It’s just another ‘neither Maduro nor Trump,’” he added.

As reported by the STAR, on Sunday Hernández Rivera presented the new version of the PDP’s regulations, which

speaks of an improved commonwealth, but provides no details about what that means, Aponte pointed out.

“Under García Padilla, Pablo José’s apparent mentor, a joint commission was created to address status that never met,” he said. “In fact, three separate commissions-committees were created to evaluate the status under José Luis Dalmau in 2021 and 2022, and we are still awaiting the results of those alleged ‘works’; under ‘Charlie’ Delgado, they said they would address it, but that never happened. The reality is that nothing is happening, and the PDP has transformed into a leftist party.”

Hochul endorses Mamdani for mayor of New York

Gov. Kathy Hochul of New York endorsed Zohran Mamdani, the Democratic nominee for mayor of New York City, on Sunday night in a guest essay in The New York Times Opinion section, providing critical support ahead of the November election.

Hochul’s endorsement, after months of deliberation, is the latest sign that Democratic leaders who have been skeptical of Mamdani’s leftist views are beginning to coalesce around him.

Hochul and Mamdani represent divergent sectors of their party. She is a moderate who recently declared herself a lover of capitalism, vowed not to raise taxes and supports Israel. He is a democratic socialist who wants higher taxes on the richest New Yorkers and is highly critical of Israel’s actions in the Gaza Strip.

The two leaders also have vastly different life stories: Hochul, 67, is from Buffalo and patiently rose through her party’s ranks; Mamdani, 33, was born in Uganda and grew up in Manhattan and surprised the political world with his victory in the Democratic primary in June.

Hochul said in her essay that she had been talking to Mamdani for months and that they had some disagreements.

“But in our conversations, I heard a leader who shares my commitment to a New York where children can grow up safe in their neighborhoods and where opportunity is within reach for every family,” she wrote. “I heard a leader who is focused on making New York City affordable — a goal I enthusiastically support.”

Mamdani thanked Hochul for her support and said she had “made affordability the centerpiece of her work.”

“There’s so much work left to do, and our movement is only growing stronger,” he said.

Hochul and Mamdani are both focused on addressing the affordability crisis in the state and the city and could each benefit from their new alliance. Hochul is up for reelection next year, and she is facing a primary challenge from her lieutenant governor, Antonio Delgado.

If Mamdani is elected, he could help protect her left flank, but also prove a liability in the general election, where she could face Rep. Elise Stefanik, a Republican and a strong supporter of President Donald Trump.

Stefanik said in a statement that Hochul now must own “every radical position” Mamdani has supported, including his past support for defunding the police.

“As I always said, it was only a matter of time before the worst governor in America, Kathy Hochul, would bend the knee to the communist antisemite Zohran Mamdani,” she said.

Mamdani is a democratic socialist, not a communist, and has denied accusations that he is antisemitic. He has spoken frequently about expanding the city’s efforts to protect Jewish New Yorkers and combat antisemitism if he is elected.

Mamdani is leading in the polls, but some prominent Democrats have not yet endorsed him, including Sen. Chuck Schumer and Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, the minority leaders in the U.S. Senate and House. His rivals, former Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who is running as an independent, and Curtis Sliwa, the Republican candidate, have argued that Mamdani is too far to the left and too inexperienced.

Hochul’s endorsement could help prove that establishment Democrats view Mamdani as someone they can work with. If Mamdani wins, he will need Hochul to help enact his ambitious agenda. Mamdani has pledged to implement free buses and universal child care, among other programs, and will need help from state lawmakers to pay for them.

Hochul has a fraught history with Cuomo. He picked her as his running mate for lieutenant governor in 2014, and she became governor after Cuomo resigned in 2021 after a series of sexual harassment allegations that he

has denied. Hochul called Cuomo’s behavior “repulsive” after the state attorney general found that Cuomo sexually harassed 11 women. He has been highly critical of her tenure.

Hochul’s decision to endorse Mamdani was a blow to his more moderate political opponents, who have worked to stop Democratic Party leaders from backing him to try to clear a path to his defeat. It will also put her at odds with many of her own donors in real estate and finance, who view Mamdani as a direct threat to their businesses and are organizing to defeat him.

Mayor Eric Adams, who is also running as an independent and is in fourth place in the polls, has been weighing whether to exit the race. Close associates of Trump discussed offering him an ambassadorship to Saudi Arabia, The New York Times reported.

Trump has said that he wants to stop Mamdani and would prefer for Cuomo to face him in a two-person race.

Hochul said recently that Trump should not meddle in the race.

“Contrary to what the president thinks, he’s not a king, he’s not a kingmaker, and he should not be anointing the next mayor of New York City,” Hochul said.

Hochul wrote in the essay that she and Mamdani were united in opposing Trump’s policies that hurt the city, including cuts to Medicaid and food assistance.

“Zohran Mamdani and I will both be fearless in confronting the president’s extreme agenda — with urgency, conviction and the defiance that defines New York,” she said.

Then she added in an apparent reference to Trump’s efforts to help Cuomo: “Anyone who accepts his tainted influence, or benefits from it, is compromised from the start.”

Edward F. Cox, the Republican state chair, said in a statement that Hochul had endorsed “an avowed communist” for mayor, repeating a claim made by Trump. He said that New Yorkers were leaving the state over her failed policies.

Sliwa’s campaign criticized Hochul and Mamdani in a statement, saying, “They deserve each other.”

Trump administration claims vast powers as it races to fire Fed governor before meeting

The Trump administration sought to convince a federal court Sunday that President Donald Trump possesses vast powers and “discretion” to fire federal officials, as it raced to block Lisa Cook, a governor on the Federal Reserve, from participating in this week’s meeting of the central bank.

The government offered its latest arguments to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, where judges are weighing an emergency request by Trump that would allow him to proceed with firing Cook after a lower court halted those plans last week.

In their new filing, lawyers for the Justice Department defended Trump’s decision to dismiss Cook over allegations of mortgage fraud, which involved loan documents she signed before joining the Fed in 2022. While she has not been charged with any wrongdoing or convicted of a crime, Trump announced he would fire Cook from the Fed in late August, citing a provi-

sion in the central bank’s founding law that allows him to oust members for “cause.”

Newly reported documents have called into question the president’s assertions. But the administration told the court Sunday that the decision to remove Cook is “an unreviewable exercise of the discretion Congress vested” in the president.

Lawyers for the government also framed the ouster as “reasonable,” arguing that the claims against Cook had created doubt that she “can be trusted to act with forthrightness, care, and disinterest in managing the U.S. money supply.”

The government’s arguments to the appeals court echoed those that it presented to a lower court earlier this month, before a federal judge temporarily blocked Trump from firing Cook. There, Jia Cobb, a judge on the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, found that Trump could not remove Cook for conduct that occurred before she was confirmed to the Fed, nor for claims that do not involve her professional conduct.

late panel to stay that order and rule by the end of Monday, before the Fed’s two-day meeting, which begins Tuesday. Trump has attacked the central bank for months, demanding that its policymakers slash interest rates.

On Saturday, lawyers for Cook told the court that a decision that prevents her from attending that meeting — and casting a vote on interest rates — could unleash turmoil in the financial markets and undermine the political independence of the Fed.

Trump has forged ahead with his attempts to fire Cook even as new documents have called into question whether the Fed governor falsified records to obtain more favorable loan terms, as the president and his allies have alleged.

Trump claims that Cook purchased two residences in 2021, before her confirmation to the Fed, and listed both as her primary residence. But a preliminary loan estimate for one of those properties, a condominium in Atlanta, classified it as a “vacation home,” according to the records, which were viewed by The New York Times.

As she does each afternoon, Danie Wright took her puppy out for a walk near a creek behind her home in her Florida neighborhood.

But what began as a routine stroll Wednesday with Dax, a 4-month-old shih tzu, turned into a harrowing attack by an alligator that suddenly emerged from the moss-covered creek and yanked on the dog’s collar.

“The next thing I heard was a squeak like my dog,” Wright recalled in an interview Sunday. “I turned and looked, and an alligator had him. The alligator’s front teeth were through the collar of my dog.”

Wright, a professional dog sitter, said the alligator then tried to drag Dax into the water in Land O’Lakes, which is about 20 miles north of Tampa.

“I held onto the leash for dear life,” Wright said, adding that the alligator, which was about 5 feet long, also dragged her into the water.

She and the 5-pound dog were in about a foot of water, she said, when she used her right hand to grab the dog’s collar, pull him out of the water and toss him back onto shore.

As she was rescuing the dog, the alligator grabbed her left arm in its mouth. Wright, 53, a former college rugby player from Massachusetts, shifted into combat mode.

“I started punching, elbowing, kicking and kneeing and I was lucky enough to flip him over onto his back,” she said.

During the struggle, the gator loosened its grip on her arm enough that she was able to pull it out of its mouth. Back onshore, she called the authorities, and deputies from the Pasco Sheriff’s Office responded with fire and rescue crews and two alligator trappers.

Dax was safe and uninjured but Wright, who was covered in moss and blood, said she had several bites to her arm. “I was so lucky it was a small alligator,” she said.

She said she was bandaged at the scene and did not

require stitches but had to get a tetanus shot and antibiotics. Trappers eventually captured the alligator and removed it, Wright said.

Unwelcome alligators, called nuisance gators, are typically killed after they come into contact with humans, according to a 2012 brochure from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

The commission did not immediately respond to inquiries Sunday about Wright’s encounter.

“If you live in Florida or anywhere there are gators, you have to keep your eye out 24/7,” Wright said. “I never saw the alligator coming.”

Alligator attacks on humans are rare.

Florida had an average of eight unprovoked alligator bites that required medical attention a year over the 10-year period that ended in 2022, according to the commission.

In May, an 11-foot alligator tipped over a canoe and killed a 61-year-old woman, in Central Florida. The woman, Cynthia Diekema, of Davenport, Florida, was canoeing with her husband in about 2 1/2 feet of water where Tiger Creek meets Lake Kissimmee in Polk County, which is south of Orlando, when they passed over a large alligator that thrashed and threw the couple into the water, the authorities said at the time.

And in early March, a woman who was paddling in the same waterway where Diekema was killed was attacked by an 8-foot alligator that bit her elbow. She was taken to a hospital, where she was treated for her injury.

Sometimes one sentence can be immensely clarifying.

Several years ago, when I worked at National Review, I was speaking to my colleague Michael Brendan Dougherty on a podcast about a familiar and depressing topic: partisan blindness. Why, when we can see the evil in the opposition so clearly, are we blind to our own faults?

When my opponents do something wrong, that’s emblematic, Dougherty said, but when my allies do something wrong, that’s exceptional.

Here’s what he meant. If, say, you’re a highly partisan Republican, you will often look at corruption and acts of violence by your partisan opponents and say, “That’s just what the left does” or “That’s what leftism leads to.” Corruption and violence reveals the left’s true nature.

If a right-leaning extremist commits an act of violence — or if a Republican is brazenly corrupt — then the response is different. “Every orchard has a few bad apples” or “How dare you compare me to that terrible person?” or “Normal Republicans are nothing like that.”

As a result, no matter the facts of the moment, you end up mad at the opposition. If a left-leaning assassin kills a Republican, then you’re angry because the left is violent. If a right-leaning assassin kills a Democrat, then you’re angry because the left blames the right for what is obviously an evil

Online algorithms magnify the problem. They recognize that you are hungry for content that amplifies every bad act by your political enemies and that you hate to read or see any form of attack on your friends, so you live in a carefully curated false reality.

As a result, no matter the direction of the tragedy, the end result is the same — the right grows angrier at the left, and the left grows angrier at the right.

You see this exact phenomenon unfolding in the aftermath of the assassination of Charlie Kirk. Take, for example, this statement from Matt Walsh, a popular podcaster at The Daily Wire, one of the largest media outlets on the right: “Charlie tried to have conversations with you on the left, and you killed him for it.”

Walsh went on: “You’re killing us in our churches, you tried to kill our president, you killed one of our greatest advocates in Charlie Kirk. You have been openly cheering for and celebrating and encouraging and committing political violence for years.”

“It’s too late to turn the temperature down,” he added. “This is not a time to hold hands. It’s a time for justice. This is a time for good to fight back against evil. It is time for the righteous to prevail.”

Blake Masters, a former Republican candidate for Senate and an ally of JD Vance and Peter Thiel, posted on the social platform X, “There is no ‘both sides’ here. The political aggression and taste for violence against innocent people are all coming from the left.”

John Daniel Davidson, a senior editor at The Federalist, a right-wing outlet online, wrote, “The left is a violent revolutionary movement that wants all those who oppose it dead. It’s incompatible with American constitutionalism. Charlie Kirk’s assassination should confirm what we already should have known: We cannot share a country with the left.”

This line of thinking leads in one direction — rationalizing extreme measures in response. In an interview on “Fox and Friends” Friday morning, President Donald Trump responded to a question about radicalism on both the left and right by saying: “I’ll tell you something that’s going to get me in trouble, but I couldn’t care less. The radicals on the right oftentimes are radical because they don’t want to see crime.” Trump continued, “They’re saying, ‘We don’t want these people coming in. We don’t want you burning our shopping centers. We don’t want you shooting our people in the middle of the street.’”

But wait. Can’t someone on the left mount a similar indictment of the right? In the past decade, we’ve watched as right-wing extremists commit mass murder in synagogues and shopping centers. We’ve seen a Minnesota lawmaker and her husband assassinated in their own home.

We’ve seen hard-right militants plot to kidnap the governor of Michigan. Conspiracy theories have led to armed attacks on government buildings and even a pizza place.

In fact, a person on the left might argue, the data is clear — over the past decade, right-wing extremists have killed far more people than left-wing extremists.

We’ve watched threats escalate against public officials at all levels, and we’ve watched as MAGA has inflicted a reign of terror against local election officials and school board members who dare to defy its will.

And we’ve watched a right-wing mob occupy the Capitol, brutally beat police officers, and attempt to overturn the result of a presidential election because they didn’t like the outcome.

If anyone pretends that the right doesn’t celebrate political violence against the left, let’s remember that none other than the sitting president of the United States would sometimes begin his political rallies with a performance of the national anthem by the “J6 Prison Choir,” a group of people imprisoned because they stormed the Capitol on Trump’s behalf.

On Friday, Megan McArdle, a columnist at The Washington Post, wrote on X, “One thing that’s clear from the online debate over whether the left or the right is more violent is that many people have an encyclopedic command of the attacks perpetrated by the other side, and have memory-holed attacks by their co-ideologists.”

She’s right, and this isn’t a harmless error. If we’re convinced that political violence comes from only one side of the divide, then the temptation toward punitive authoritarianism is overwhelming. “They” are evil and violent, and “they” must be crushed.

If, however, we accurately understand that America has an immense problem with violent extremism on both sides of the ideological aisle — even if, at any given moment, one side is worse than the other — then the answer lies in reconciliation, not domination. In fact, it’s the will to dominate that magnifies the crisis and radicalizes our opponents.

Confirmation bias is entirely human. We screen out negative information about our side because we so desperately want to see ourselves as good people, fighting hard in a righteous struggle. It’s not just that we believe our ideas are better, but that we are better — we possess higher character and better values than the people on the other side.

The truth, however, tends to complicate simple narratives, and in the United States the truth is grim. Violent acts aren’t uniting our nation in introspection, grief and grace — they’re separating us into warring factions.

It was a shattering thing for me to realize that the Republican Party had no moral firewalls against nominating a man like Trump. I’d spent years laboring under the false belief that character mattered to Republicans, and — specifically — that it mattered more to Republicans than Democrats.

The destruction of that illusion was a painful thing, but I’m grateful to know the truth. To get past this dreadful moment, more and more Americans are going to have to face a painful fact. Evil isn’t confined to one side of the American divide. There are monsters in your midst, too.

‘The Pitt’ wins big, and 6 other takeaways from the 2025 Emmys

“The Pitt,” the low-budget HBO Max medical series that became a surprise sensation this year, took television’s most coveted prize when it won best drama at the 77th Emmy Awards on Sunday night.

With the win, “The Pitt” bested the Apple TV+ workplace thriller “Severance,” a show that had a much bigger budget, a starrier cast and several more Emmy nominations. It was a face-off that the entertainment industry was watching closely because of how the contenders took such different approaches to making and crafting a TV show.

Noah Wyle, whose career had gone quiet until his role as a battle-scarred emergency room doctor in “The Pitt,” won his first Emmy, for best actor in a drama. He was last nominated 26 years ago for his role as a fresh-faced doctor in “ER.”

“Wow, what a dream this has been,” Wyle said onstage.

Katherine LaNasa, a journeyman actor until her star turn in “The Pitt,” also won her first Emmy in the best supporting actress category, beating out a field that included four actresses from “The White Lotus.”

Here’s what else to know about the ceremony, which was hosted by comedian Nate Bargatze:

— Wins for “Adolescence”: Netflix’s out-of-nowhere hit, “Adolescence,” dominated the limited series categories, taking six alone Sunday night. — Standing ovations for Colbert: Stephen Colbert’s “The Late Show,” the CBS program that was canceled over the summer, won best talk show for the first time and received his second standing ovation from the industry crowd. Earlier, when he presented the first award of the night, Colbert was greeted by a chorus of “Stephen! Stephen! Stephen!” chants before he deadpanned, “While I have everyone’s attention, is anyone hiring?” CBS has contended for months that his show was canceled only for financial reasons but many in the industry have continued to speculate whether it was done to curry favor with the Trump administration.

— Wins for ‘Severance’: “Severance” had two acting wins, with Britt Lower prevailing in best actress in a drama, and Tramell Tillman taking the award for outstanding supporting actor in a drama, the first Emmys for each.

— Wins for ‘Hacks’: Jean Smart won her fourth Emmy for her role in “Hacks,” her seventh overall. Hannah Einbinder, Smart’s castmate in “Hacks,” won her first Emmy after four nominations.

— Tributes to older shows: There were tributes galore to classic series, including “Law & Order,” “Gilmore Girls,” “Grey’s Anatomy” and “The Golden Girls.” Ted Danson and Mary Steenburgen were presented the Bob Hope Humanitarian Award, an honor the Television Academy gives out only every few years.

Wall Street indexes end higher ahead of Fed meeting; Tesla and Alphabet rally

The three major U.S. stock indexes closed higher on Monday with the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq notching intraday record high closes, as investors await the Federal Reserve’s crucial policy meeting later this week.

Tesla shares climbed 3.6% after regulatory filings revealed CEO Elon Musk had acquired nearly $1 billion worth of the electric vehicle maker’s stock on Friday. And Google parent Alphabet hit a record high and raced past $3 trillion in market capitalization.

The Federal Open Market Committee meeting on September 16 and 17 looms large over sentiment this week with market participants widely expecting a 25-basis-point reduction following recent economic data signaling labor market weakness.

“The market is counting on sort of a goldilocks scenario where the employment market is just weak enough to prompt the Federal Reserve to start a rate cutting series, not just one, without disrupting overall growth,” said Carol Schleif, Chief Investment Officer at BMO Family Office. “I think the markets will be disappointed if the Fed doesn’t give some hint that they intend to continue rate cuts.”

Traders on Monday are pricing in a 96% chance of a 25-basis-point cut at this week’s meeting.

Tesla’s gains boosted the S&P 500 consumer discretionary sector 1.1% to its highest level in nearly nine months. Meanwhile, Alphabet helped lift the communication services sector up 2.33%.

Nvidia slipped 0.04% after China’s market regulator said it will continue an investigation into the AI chip leader after preliminary findings showed it had violated the country’s anti-monopoly law.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 49.23 points, or 0.11%, to 45,883.45, the S&P 500 gained 30.99 points, or 0.47%, to 6,615.28 and the Nasdaq Composite gained 207.65 points, or 0.94%, to 22,348.75.

Rubio, in Israel, says a diplomatic solution to Hamas war may not be possible

Secretary of State Marco Rubio cast doubt on the chances of negotiating the surrender of Palestinian militant group Hamas, saying during a visit to Israel on Monday that a diplomatic deal to end the war in the Gaza Strip might not be possible.

Rubio spoke at a news conference alongside Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel after the two men met for several hours. His comments struck a more pessimistic tone than that of President Donald Trump, who earlier this month said that a deal to stop the fighting in Gaza could come “very soon.”

While making clear that the United States would still pursue a peace settlement, Rubio said Hamas is “a terrorist group, a barbaric group, whose stated mission is the destruction of the Jewish state. So we’re not counting on that happening.”

His remarks were in harmony with those of Netanyahu, who reiterated that Israel “must make sure Hamas is eliminated.” At the end of the news conference, Netanyahu said he would prefer a Hamas “surrender” to continued fighting if possible, while saying nothing about the status of negotiations with the group.

Rubio made clear that with regards to the war, “the president wants this to be finished,” with the hostages released and Hamas defeated. Israel believes that about 20 hostages are still alive in Gaza.

Hamas has shown no willingness to lay down its arms. And Netanyahu, whom critics accuse of prolonging the war to extend his political career, shows no signs of compromising in his pursuit of a total victory over Hamas.

Some tensions have emerged between Netanyahu and Trump about the war in Gaza and Israel’s recent strike against Hamas leaders in the Gulf nation of Qatar. The State Department announced that Rubio will travel to Qatar on Tuesday.

Despite those tensions, Rubio and the Israeli premier seemed determined to present a unified front.

“It’s obvious that Israel has no better ally than America,” Netanyahu said. “The American-Israeli alliance has never been as strong as it is now.”

Still, it remains unclear whether Netanyahu and Trump are in full agreement on the conduct of the war in Gaza. Eager to cast himself as a peacemaker, Trump has promised to broker a ceasefire that would free the remaining hostages.

But his diplomacy has come up short, and Israel is now preparing a major military offensive in Gaza City that is likely to prolong the fighting for months.

There were growing signs that a ground invasion of Gaza City could begin soon. On Sunday, the Israeli military intensified airstrikes on the city and attacked four more high-rise buildings that it said were being used by Hamas.

Both Rubio and Netanyahu dodged questions Monday about whether they had discussed the planned offensive. Israel’s leader defended its objective, saying that Gaza City was Hamas’ most important remaining stronghold.

“We’re going to take over and destroy the Hamas stronghold,” Netanyahu said.

Rubio had declined to say Saturday whether Trump supports that goal. Israel has issued evacuation orders for the city, and more than 300,000 Palestinians have

fled in the past two weeks, according to the Israeli military.

Aid organizations have warned that the displacement of hundreds of thousands more people to already crowded areas of central and southern Gaza will exacerbate the severe humanitarian crisis in the enclave, where hunger is rampant.

“No place is safe in Gaza. No one is safe,” Philippe Lazzarini, the commissioner-general of the U.N. agency that aids Palestinians, wrote on social media Sunday as people fleeing Gaza City clogged the coastal road with traffic.

“More and more people are forced to leave, disoriented and uncertain, heading into the unknown,” Lazzarini added.

Gaza’s Civil Defense, the territory’s rescue service, has reported dozens killed in Gaza City over the past two weeks, since Israel declared the large urban area a combat zone and began bombing in preparation for a full-scale ground assault.

At their news conference Monday, Rubio and Netanyahu condemned growing international calls for the recognition of a Palestinian state. The governments of Britain, France, Canada, Belgium and Australia have all said in recent weeks that they will or may recognize such a state at the annual U.N. General Assembly gathering in New York next week.

Rubio dismissed the idea as symbolic and said it would only make Hamas “feel more emboldened.” He warned that a fresh push for Palestinian statehood could provoke an Israeli backlash — a likely ref-

erence to recent calls by right-wing Israeli ministers for the annexation of the West Bank in response.

Netanyahu, who vowed last week that “there will be no Palestinian state,” offered a similar assessment.

Before leaving Washington on Saturday, Rubio had told reporters that he would press Netanyahu about last week’s Israeli airstrike targeting Hamas leaders in Qatar, a U.S. ally in the Gulf that has acted as a mediator in talks to end the war in Gaza. The strike angered Trump, who said it would set back efforts to reach a peace deal.

But Monday, Rubio chose not to dwell on the subject.

“We are focused on what happens now. What happens next?” Rubio said at the news conference. He added that the U.S. would “continue to encourage Qatar to play a constructive role” as a middleman between Israel and Hamas.

While Hamas said the strike in Doha had failed to kill the senior figures in the group who were targeted, Netanyahu said he was “still getting the final reports” and rejected the idea that the attack might have failed.

“We sent a message to the terrorists: You can run, but you can’t hide, and we’ll get you,” he said.

Netanyahu also paid tribute to Charlie Kirk, the conservative activist who was assassinated in Utah last week. He called him a “tremendous, tremendous friend of Israel” who had even sent him advice on the defense of Israel.

Starving children eat animal feed in besieged Sudanese city

The city’s last functioning hospital has been bombed more than 30 times. Between 30 and 40 severely malnourished children arrive every day, seeking help. There’s nothing to give them but animal feed.

“Even we’re eating animal feed,” said Dr. Omar Selik, tilting his camera during a video call to show his meal: a sludgy paste made from pressed peanuts that is usually given to cows, camels and donkeys. “There’s nothing else.”

El Fasher is the worst battleground of Sudan’s brutal civil war. For nearly 18 months the city, in the western region of Darfur, has been under siege by paramilitaries trying to starve it into submission. Fighters have erected a 20-mile earthen wall around its boundaries.

That leaves residents with a dire set of choices. Stay, and risk being bombed or starved. Run, and risk being killed, robbed or sexually assaulted.

“People seem to have forgotten us,” said Selik, breaking into tears as he spoke. “Oh my God, it’s a very painful story.”

The war in Sudan started more than two years ago, when clashes broke out between Sudan’s army and its paramilitary rival, the Rapid Support Forces. The fight has engulfed Africa’s third-largest country, forcing about 12 million people from their homes, killing tens of thousands and setting off a major famine. Aid groups call it the world’s biggest humanitarian crisis.

Since March, when the Rapid Support Forces was expelled from the capital, Khartoum, the group has redoubled its effort to capture Darfur, the vast region in western Sudan where most RSF fighters are from. El Fasher is the last city in their way.

More than 500,000 people have fled El Fasher since April, when the RSF rampaged through Zamzam, a famine-stricken camp 7 miles south of the city, killing between 300 and 1,500 people in what the U.N. described as one of the worst massacres of the war.

A month later, the RSF began to circle the city with the giant earthen berm, according to satellite images published by the Yale School of Public Health. On Aug. 27, construction to extend the berm was continuing.

An estimated 260,000 people are left in El Fasher, trapped by the tightening siege. A kilo of pasta sells for $73, 10 times the normal price, Taha Khater, one of the few aid workers left in the city, said by phone. His group, known as the Emergency Response Rooms, recorded the

deaths of 14 children from malnutrition in the past two weeks. Cholera is spreading.

Food convoys from the United Nations, which has not been able to deliver food to El Fasher in over a year, have been attacked by drones as they approached the city. One strike in June, on a convoy of 15 trucks, killed five aid workers; another last month destroyed three trucks and forced the rest to turn back. It is unclear which side carried out the attacks.

Young men attempting to flee the city, scrambling over the berm at night, have been executed by fighters, Khater said.

International aid groups offer help in Tawila, a small town 40 miles to the west now heaving with more than 600,000 refugees. But the journey to Tawila is perilous. Fighters roam the area, robbing or extorting fleeing civilians. The road is lined with hastily dug graves and abandoned bodies, aid workers say.

Sudan’s military has also been accused of widespread war crimes, including bombing raids on crowded markets near El Fasher that killed several hundred people. In January, the United States imposed sanctions on Gen. Abdel Fattah Burhan, the leader of Sudan’s military, for alleged use of chemical weapons.

But only the RSF has been accused of genocide, and this month U.N. investigators determined that the long list of atrocities committed by its troops in El Fasher amount to crimes against humanity. An RSF spokesperson did not respond to questions for this story.

Foreign involvement in the war in Sudan has worsened the siege. The United Arab Emirates has supplied guns, drones and medical support to the RSF, hoping to push the group toward victory, The New York Times has reported. This month, Sudan’s military-led government submitted a dossier to the U.N. Security Council that accused the Emirates of hiring a group of Colombian mercenaries, known as the Desert Wolves, to fight alongside the RSF.

The dossier, which included passport copies, contracts and a list of 170 people said to be mercenaries, came soon after video footage and photos purporting to show Colombian fighters in central El Fasher circulated online. The Times was able to verify the location of one video, but not the identities of the fighters.

The Emirates has repeatedly denied supporting either side in Sudan’s war and dismissed the Sudanese dossier as a fabrication.

Hospitals are a major target in the conflict. Of about 200 medical facilities in El Fasher before the war, just one remains — the Al Saudi hospital, where a handful of besieged medics are hanging on, despite bombs, starvation and a vanishing supply of medicines.

Targeted more than 30 times in the war, the worst strike was in January, when an RSF drone fired a missile into a crowded ward, killing 70 patients and staff said Suleman, a senior doctor who works there.

Now, doctors shelter in foxholes during bombing raids, and malnourished patients are sustained with animal feed, said Suleman,

who asked to be identified by one name because he has received death threats for his work.

The animal feed, known locally as ambaz, is a desperate solution, because it is prone to fungal contamination, especially in the rainy season. At least 18 residents have died in recent weeks after eating ambaz, local responders said.

“But there is no other option,” Suleman said.

In recent weeks, the RSF has pushed deeper into El Fasher, forcing the Sudanese military and allied ethnic militias into the city’s northwestern corner. As they fight, RSF fighters have targeted civilians from the ethnic Zaghawa group, human rights groups say, raising fears of an ethnic massacre if they take the city outright.

Salwa Ahmed, a university lecturer, tried to stay ahead of the fighting. She fled her home as the RSF advanced, hurrying through streets littered with the bodies of fallen fighters, she said. Eventually she reached a safer place, even if bombs continued to fall nearby, she said.

But now her husband, Essam, was missing. He returned to their home a week earlier, to fetch some belongings. By Friday, he still hadn’t returned.

“We don’t know if he’s dead or alive,” she said.

As the siege has tightened, some residents have smuggled small amounts of food and medicine into the city by scrambling over the earthen berm at night. But those caught by fighters face beatings and threats. One video that circulated recently in a Telegram channel run by RSF supporters showed a man in an RSF uniform wielding a whip over a man cowering on the ground.

Diplomatic efforts to stop the fighting have yielded few results. On Aug. 13, the U.N. Security Council repeated its call for an end to the siege of El Fasher, two days after RSF fighters stormed a camp in the city, killing 57 people.

Three days later, the RSF stormed into the camp again, this time killing 32 people, Human Rights Watch reported.

Trump’s reversals on immigration mount over economic concerns

President Donald Trump entered the White House in January promising both the “largest deportation program in American history” and a “golden age” for American businesses.

But in recent weeks, the tension between those two promises has spilled out into the open, leading Trump to reverse or contradict some of his most significant anti-immigration policies when they threatened to disrupt the economy.

Trump has celebrated his success in driving down illegal border crossings and in cracking down on immigration more broadly. But he walks a careful line when his hard-line policies collide with his economic agenda — particularly when it comes to foreign workers, student visas and industries that rely on immigrant labor.

The changing positions have not only infuriated his far-right allies, but have also confused those aiming to carry out his deportation policies.

“His heart isn’t in the nativist purge the way that the rest of his administration’s heart is into it,” said David J. Bier, the director of immigration studies at the Cato Institute. “He’s always been someone who likes to dabble in that type of rhetoric. But at the same time, he’s always had a soft spot for the economic needs from a business perspective.”

Abigail Jackson, a White House spokesperson, said in a statement that Trump “has been incredibly consistent with his immigration policies.” To suggest otherwise, she added, “demonstrates a fundamental lack of understanding of the president’s agenda.”

Jackson said that “while anyone in the country illegally is eligible for deportation, the priority remains criminal illegals who terrorize American communities.”

Trump last week faced an uproar after immigration agents arrested nearly 500 workers, most of them South Korean citizens, at the construction site of an electric vehicle battery plant in Georgia. The raid caused deep anger in South Korea — a key U.S. ally and trading partner — and had the potential to discourage exactly the kind of foreign investment in U.S. manufacturing that Trump is trying to achieve.

Even though the Trump administration had argued the workers were in the United States illegally, Trump temporarily paused the deportations to consider allowing the South Korean workers to stay in the United States and help finish the factory, according to officials in Seoul, South Korea. Most of the workers did end up returning to South Korea.

Trump similarly appeared to pull back on his hard-line approach to student visas when it risked upending the finances of American colleges and universities.

In May, Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced that the Trump administration would work to “aggressively revoke” visas of Chinese students, and that the administration would “enhance scrutiny” of future applicants from China. Chinese undergraduates often pay full tuition for their education.

Nearly two months later, Trump shocked his conservative allies when he said he would let 600,000 Chinese students into American universities. “I like that other countries’ students come here,” Trump said. “And you know what would happen if they didn’t? Our college system would go to hell very quickly.”

Laura Ingraham, the Fox News anchor, pressed Howard Lutnick, the commerce secretary, on Trump’s turnabout.

“How is allowing 600,000 students from the communist country of China putting America first?” Ingraham asked Lutnick, who argued that Trump was trying to help support colleges.

“His view is he’s taking a rational economic view,” Lutnick said.

A White House official, speaking on the condition of anonymity to describe the administration’s approach to student visas, said the 600,000 figure was an estimate of the total number of visas expected for Chinese students over the next two years under the government’s existing policy.

In June, Trump recognized that his immigration agenda was taking a toll on certain industries, including agriculture.

“Our great Farmers and people in the Hotel and Leisure business have been stating that our very aggressive policy on immigration is taking very good, long time workers away from them, with those jobs being almost impossible to replace,” he wrote on social media.

That same day, Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials sent out guidance telling their agents to largely avoid

enforcement at worksites in certain industries, including hotels and restaurants. Days later, officials appeared to backtrack on the guidance, and claimed that all operations would remain on the table.

Trump on various occasions has tried to appease both immigration hardliners and those who rely on immigrant workers.

During the transition, Trump weighed in on a heated debate among his supporters over immigrants and the economy, saying he had used visas for skilled-immigrant workers for his own businesses. (Trump only used the visas, known as H-1B, sparingly.)

His comments were celebrated by technology executives who said they relied on the program because they could not find enough qualified American workers. But right-wing activists, including Laura Loomer and Steve Bannon, said the program was harmful because it brought in workers willing to accept lower salaries than Americans.

Mark Krikorian, the head of the Center for Immigration Studies, a group that supports restrictions on immigration, said business interests have for decades swayed Republican administrations, which advocated not just mass deportations but also comprehensive immigration reform.

Despite Trump’s reversals, Krikorian said he still believed business interests would not curtail the Trump administration’s deportation agenda.

“There’s no question that the concerns of businesses are going to get a hearing in a Republican administration or a Republican Congress, but it’s not going to be the kind of relationship that existed in the past,” he said.

Trump’s allies acknowledged that he was sensitive to business leaders who may be anxious over his immigration policy.

Kenneth Cuccinelli, a former acting deputy homeland security secretary under Trump, has argued that strict immigration limits benefit poor Americans seeking employment. (Many economists have found that immigration has bolstered the U.S. economy.)

“The president is a businessman,” Cuccinelli said. “He has a concern when people say, ‘You know, I won’t be able to do business.’”

Asociación de Agricultores, Agricultura y Salud respaldan medida para controlar amenaza de cerdos salvajes

EL CAPITOLIO – El Proyecto de la Cámara 641, que busca crear la Ley para Controlar la Amenaza Porcina a Nuestros Agricultores y permitiría a los agricultores cazar, sin necesidad de licencia, a los cerdos salvajes que amenacen sus cosechas, recibió hoy el respaldo de la Asociación de Agricultores de Puerto Rico, el Departamento de Agricultura y el Departamento de Salud durante una vista pública en la Cámara de Representantes.

“El aumento de la población de cerdos salvajes ha

tenido un impacto devastador en nuestras cosechas. Conozco agricultores que después de meses de trabajo ven cómo en una sola noche estos animales destruyen todo su esfuerzo. Estamos hablando de pérdidas millonarias y de una amenaza real a la seguridad alimentaria de Puerto Rico. Este proyecto surge como respuesta a esa situación y busca ofrecerles a los agricultores una herramienta inmediata para defender sus fincas”, puntualizó el autor de la medida, el representante novoprogresista, Axel “Chino” Roque Gracia.

La propuesta enmienda el Artículo 16(a) de la Ley 241-1999, conocida como la Nueva Ley de Vida Silvestre de Puerto Rico, para eximir del requisito de permisos especiales a los agricultores cuyas fincas estén afectadas por esta especie. El cambio responde a lo que se ha descrito como una emergencia agrícola que amenaza la seguridad alimentaria de la isla. La medida también ordena al Departamento de Recursos Naturales y Ambientales (DRNA), en coordinación con Agricultura, establecer protocolos para la disposición adecuada de los animales cazados, con la posibilidad de sumar agencias estatales y federales al esfuerzo.

Rivera, afirmó que la propuesta “permitiría controlar una población invasora que ha causado daños significativos a los cultivos, los suelos y los ecosistemas”. Subrayó que la medida también ofrece “una herramienta adicional para que los agricultores puedan disponer de la carne de estos animales”, aunque reconoció que la prioridad es detener las pérdidas económicas que genera la presencia de estos cerdos en los terrenos agrícolas.

El secretario de Salud, Víctor Ramos Otero, endosó la medida, pero advirtió sobre los riesgos sanitarios que implica el consumo de la carne de cerdo vietnamita. “Se trata de una especie que puede transmitir hasta 30 enfermedades, entre ellas fiebre porcina, rabia, leptospirosis y toxoplasmosis. Por eso es indispensable que, de aprobarse, quede claramente establecido que su carne no es apta para el consumo humano”, puntualizó. La pieza legislativa continuará en evaluación en la Comisión cameral de Recursos Naturales, presidida por Elinette González Aguayo.

SAN JUAN – El portavoz del Grupo Empresarial de Máquinas de Azar, Jaime Irizarry Delgado, informó el lunes que entregó el primer pago oficial al Fondo de Retiro de la Policía de Puerto Rico, por cerca de 460 mil dólares, conforme a la Ley de Máquinas de Juegos de Azar.

“Hoy damos un paso histórico. Por primera vez podemos demostrar con datos reales que las máquinas de azar autorizadas generan recursos para fortalecer el retiro de nuestros policías. Estamos cumpliendo con la ley y reafirmando nuestro compromiso con quienes protegen al pueblo”, dijo Irizarry Delgado, en declaraciones escritas.

El vocero explicó que, por disposición legal, el 22.5 por ciento de las ganancias netas de las máquinas en ruta, así como los ingresos por licencias, se destinan al fondo de retiro. El pago, detalló, fue individualizado por operador.

Irizarry Delgado instó a la Comisión de Juegos de Puerto Rico, a la Policía de Puerto Rico, a la Junta de Supervisión Fiscal y a la Rama Judicial a redoblar la lucha contra la ilegalidad. “Cumplir con la ley y el orden es

Corozal & Cayey to meet in men’s volleyball title showdown

The Plataneros of Corozal secured their spot in the 2025 Grand Final of the Puerto Rican Men’s Superior Volleyball League after defeating the Patriotas of Lares in four sets (25-20, 23-25, 25-21, 25-20) on Sunday night at Félix Méndez Acevedo court in Lares.

The two-hour-and-eight-minute match sealed a 2-0 sweep in the semifinal series for Corozal.

Meanwhile, at Dolores “Toyita” Martínez Coliseum in Juana Díaz, the Toritos of Cayey battled through a thrilling five-set match against the Reyes of Juana Díaz, earning their ticket to the

Grand Final with scores of 12-25, 25-22, 21-25, 25-23 and 1513. Cayey also completed a 2-0 sweep in their semifinal series.

The Final Series between Corozal and Cayey will begin this Thursday at Howard T. Jason Court in Corozal, promising a high-level clash for the national championship.

Both teams arrive with strong rosters and passionate fan bases. The Final Series will follow a best-of-five format.The Toritos of Cayey will host their home games at the University of Puerto Rico in Cayey.

With the start of the NORCECA (North, Central America and Caribbean Volleyball Confederation) Women’s Final Six underway in Mexico, the coach of the Puerto Rican National Volleyball Team, Juan Carlos Núñez, made the team’s focus clear: to close the year with health, determination and valuable points for the world ranking.

“This is the last tournament of the year; it’s been a long summer with the same players, and we want to finish well,” Núñez said. “It’s important for us to put on a strong performance against the teams that can earn us points for the world ranking. We want to finish in the best possible way and with health. We’re going to put in the best performance possible.”

Ponce snaps skid, Manatí tops Caguas in BSNF

The Leonas of Ponce and the Atenienses of Manatí notched victories on Sunday night in the National Women’s Superior Basketball (BSNF) league.

Talia von Oelhoffen scored 30 points, with seven rebounds and eight assists as the Leonas snapped a five-game losing streak by defeating the Pollitas of Isabela 76-70 at Juan “Pachín” Vicéns Auditorium in Ponce.

The Leonas improved their record to 2-5, while Isabela dropped into a thirdplace tie with Carolina at 5-4.

In Manatí, the Atenienses defeated the Criollas of Caguas, 90-81.

Pamela Rosado led the way for Manatí with 23 points. Kaela Hilaire followed with 17 points, while Chelsea Mitchell and Kiyana McGill each added 15, with McGill grabbing 10 rebounds.

For Caguas, Katie Villarini scored 22 points, Asia Taylor had 20 points and 15 rebounds, and Kai James added 13 points.

Ricky Hatton, British boxer and former world champion, dies at 46

Ricky Hatton, a British boxer and former world champion, has died, the World Boxing Association said Sunday. He was 46.

Police in Manchester, England, said that the body of a 46-year-old man was found Sunday morning.

A member of the public called the police at 6:45 a.m., according to the statement, which did not identify the individual, according to police rules.

“There are not currently believed to be any suspicious circumstances,” the statement said.

Hatton retired in 2012, after a 15-year professional career that included World Boxing Association light-welterweight titles and welterweight world championships. He finished 45-3 in 48 bouts, with 32 knockouts.

He was “famous for his all-out fighting style, taking unnecessary punches in search of the crowd-pleasing knockout,” The New York Times wrote in 2009.

“A true champion, an indomitable spirit and a legend of the sport,” the WBA said on Instagram.

Hatton had a perfect 43-0 record until he was defeated by the unbeaten Floyd Mayweather Jr. in 2007 in Las Vegas, Mayweather’s hometown.

Thousands of British fans, including David Beckham, packed the arena, and sang “There’s only one Ricky Hatton” to the tune of “Winter Wonderland.” An estimated 350,000 British homes watched on a pay-per-view broadcast that began about 5 a.m. in London.

After being knocked out, Hatton got up and even took a microphone to thank his fans for coming.

His second loss came in 2009, when Manny Pacquiao knocked him out, also in Las Vegas.

That defeat — a Los Angeles Times columnist wrote that “Hatton may have been on his back longer than he was on his feet during the fight” — began a downward spiral for Hatton, he later acknowledged.

“Being a proud man and a warrior, to get splattered in two rounds like I did was really hard to come to terms with,” Hatton told the BBC in 2011. “When I tried to get back into training, I realized the hunger was gone and my career was over.”

In a statement Sunday, Pacquiao said, “Ricky fought bravely, not just in the ring, but in his journey through life.”

Hatton retired, and in 2011, he said that he had slipped into a depression. In his autobiography, “War and Peace: My Story,” he wrote that he had attempted suicide several times.

“I’d go out, have a few drinks, start sulking and start feeling sorry for myself,” Hatton told the BBC. “I kept coming home and crying to my girlfriend, saying: ‘I want to end it. I don’t want to live.’ Depression is a very serious thing. People don’t realize how deadly it can be.”

He made a comeback in 2012, which resulted in a nineround loss to Vyacheslav Senchenko.

“I don’t want to make any hasty decisions,” he said after that loss, as tears welled in his eyes. “But I’m heartbroken. I’m just booted. I can’t.”

He retired again, but he announced in July that he would make a second comeback in December in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

“I think it’ll be a sensational evening,” he said in an announcement for the fight.

Richard Hatton was born Oct. 6, 1978, in Stockport, England, outside of Manchester, and grew up in the Greater Manchester area.

His father, Ray Hatton, played football for Manchester City and had several pubs, and his mother, Carol Hatton, worked in a clothes shop in Hyde, England.

He wrote in his autobiography that he was first drawn to boxing after watching martial artist Bruce Lee on television. He starting kickboxing, and his coach suggested that he switch to boxing.

“Boxing is one of those sports where you get whacked on the nose and you either like it or you think, ‘It’s not for me, this game,’” he wrote. “I was hooked.”

In 2007, Hatton was named a member of the Order of the British Empire for his contribution to sports.

He was enshrined into the International Boxing Hall of Fame last year. “I had some wars, didn’t I?” Hatton said during his induction speech.
