PR to host 1st Round of 2026 World Baseball Classic in San Juan

Gov. Jenniffer González Colón announced Wednesday that Puerto Rico will be one of four host cities for the 2026 World Baseball Classic, with the first round to be held March 6-11 at Hiram Bithorn Stadium in Hato Rey. The other host cities are Houston, Miami and Tokyo. The teams from Canada, Cuba, Panama and Colombia will compete on the island.
The government estimated a direct economic impact of $29 million. The projection includes $10.4 million in lodging, $17.2 million in entertainment, food and beverages, and at least $1.5 million in services.
“This event isn’t just about baseball; it’s an international showcase for Puerto Rico, with millions of viewers tuning in during prime time and an estimated advertising value of $67 million,” said González Colón, who emphasized that the government will contribute $5 million in sponsorship and will coordinate with the municipality of San Juan on the management of the sports facilities.
Puerto Rico Tourism Company Executive Director Willianette Robles Cancel said the tournament will serve as a platform to showcase the island’s history, culture and cuisine. She added that, in coordination with the departments of Housing and Recreation & Sports, sports clinics for young people will be held in community centers and public housing projects.
Economic Development and Commerce Secretary Sebastián Negrón Reichard added that the media exposure will be used to arrange meetings with visiting businesspeople.

“This is a business and investment opportunity,” he said. “We will use the World Baseball Classic as a platform to promote Puerto Rico as an investment destination and to boost sectors such as rum production and manufacturing.”
San Juan Deputy Mayor Israel Alicea noted that the municipality invested nearly $50 million in the renovation of the Hiram Bithorn Stadium.
“San Juan is prepared with a concrete project, with plans, designs, and improvements to the stadium to secure this venue,” he said. “Our city is ready to host a world-class event.”
Puerto Rico Baseball Federation Vice President Anaymir “Tuti” Muñoz said Cuba will participate in the first round in San Juan and that no visa problems for its players are anticipated.
“They don’t foresee any visa problems for Cuba, specifically,” the official said. “If there were any other news, we would announce it early, but they see it positively and have no doubt that visas for Cuba will be granted, so we have them as participants.”

Aerostar Puerto Rico announced Wednesday that it will invest some $1.3 million in rehabilitating the sewer system at the Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport, a project that will cause a partial closure of Baldorioty de Castro Avenue starting Saturday night.
“These improvements, at a cost of approximately $1,290,000, are part of our commitment to safety, environmental protection, and the quality of airport services,” said Jorge Hernández, president of Aerostar Puerto Rico, in a written statement. “We want to act proactively before the sewer system poses a risk to the community or our operations.”
The work involves installing internal linings in the pipes using Thermoform PVC Liner technology, which repairs cracks, leaks, and deformations without the need for excavation. According to the company, the method is odorless, non-toxic and environmentally friendly.
The work will begin this Saturday at 10 p.m. and continue until Sunday at 10 a.m. During that time, traffic in the direction from Carolina to San Juan on the Baldorioty de Castro Expressway will be partially closed at kilometer 8.2. Drivers will be diverted to the service road.
Aerostar urged travelers and residents in the area to plan their trips in advance and use alternate routes. The Department of Transportation and Public Works recommended using the Waze app to find routes that minimize delays.
Inspector general: Fiscal board has last word on Xuvo contract

Puerto Rico Inspector General Ivelisse Torres Rivera revealed Wednesday that, despite the findings of the Office of the Inspector General (OIG), the Financial Oversight and Management Board has the last word on the fate of a contract awarded to XUVO Technologies.
She made her remarks in response to irregularities in the contracts offered by the Puerto Rico Department of State and the Department of Natural and Environmental Resources (DNER) to XUVO Technologies, which is now tasked by the Department of Health with managing its digital platform.
Torres said the OIG has identified and documented the interventions made regarding the technology company.
Some of the irregularities reported included the absence of mandatory clauses. For instance, there was a system for which an excessive fee seemed to be charged, as it had already been developed for another government entity and was essentially being billed as a new platform. Additionally, there were legal

concerns about the fact that the contract had been signed on Dec. 31 at the end of a governor’s term in 2020.
Torres stated that if the oversight board determines something contrary to the OIG’s findings, the board’s decision will prevail.
Heavy rains trigger new flood warnings for Vieques after conditions improve in the southwest

The National Weather Service (NWS) in San Juan reported Wednesday afternoon that a flood warning for Cabo Rojo, Hormigueros, Mayagüez and San Germán had been lifted, but a new warning remained in effect for Vieques due to heavy rains stemming from a tropical depression that had moved into the region.
According to the NWS, the warning for Vieques was to remain in effect until 7 p.m., as additional rainfall was expected to cause water accumulation in urban areas, streams and low-lying areas.
Doppler radar detected between one and 2 inches of rain over Vieques at 3:49 p.m. An additional inch of rain was anticipated for the remainder of the afternoon, which had the potential to lead to minor flooding and dangerous flows in poorly drained areas.
Although conditions improved in the southwest, the NWS urged residents to remain vigilant for potential road closures and hazardous conditions. For those in Vieques, they recommended avoiding flooded roads and staying away from waterways, as conditions could change rapidly.
“In this context, since the board is already making a judgment about the contract’s legality and whether it complies with the provisions required by the government, it is prudent to wait for the board’s determination,” she said. “Considering they only requested this contract in August, once the inspector general’s review is complete, we will await the [...] oversight board’s conclusion. After that, if necessary, we will continue the evaluation process from our office.”
After the contract between XUVO and the Health Department was publicly questioned -- for, among other reasons, being awarded without a competitive process and after another company had been selected -- the board requested information from the government and emphasized that it was not submitted for review. The agreement is worth $5 million, but the board stated, in a recent communication, that its added value is “considerably higher” due to the processing fees the company is authorized to charge for each online transaction.
The government is required to submit to the oversight board any contract valued at $10 million or more.
CPAs Association to present conference on new fraud schemes

The Puerto Rico Certified Public Accountants Association (CCPA) will hold the conference “Fraud: Lie to Me and Tell Me the Truth” on Tuesday, Sept. 30 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at its headquarters in Hato Rey.
“In recent years, fraudulent activities have increased not only in frequency but also in complexity,” CCPA President David Rodríguez Ortiz said in a written statement. “Given this reality, prevention, training, and the proper use of technological tools are essential. House speaker tours work at AES solar installation

Speaker of the Puerto Rico House of Representatives Carlos “Johnny” Méndez Nuñez earlier this week inspected the construction work at AES Puerto Rico’s Marahú photovoltaic projects, which will add some 485 megawatts of energy in just a few months at an approximate cost of 12 cents per kilowatt-hour.
The AES solar farm in Guayama will generate up to 80 megawatts of energy through solar panels and another 110 megawatts through the use of 4-hour storage batteries, while another other project, in Salinas, has the capacity to produce up to 120 megawatts from solar panels and another 175 megawatts from batteries.
The overall project is being carried out with an investment of $1.2 billion, from federal funds and private capital. The substantial capital injection has generated some 900 direct and permanent jobs, in addition to promoting local businesses such as hardware stores and restaurants in Guayama and Salinas.
“This is one of the most important solar projects in the nation,” the House speaker said. “We’re talking about 200 megawatts coming online by the first half of 2026, and the remaining 285 megawatts a few months later. Those 485 megawatts provide stability to the entire electrical system, minimizing load shifting.”
During the visit, the legislative leader toured the solar farm located in the Jobos sector of Guayama, which will generate up to 80 megawatts of energy through solar panels and another 110 megawatts through the use of 4-hour storage batteries.
The other project, located in Salinas, has the capacity to produce up to 120 megawatts from solar panels and another 175 megawatts from batteries.
Some 743 industrial photovoltaic backup batteries are installed in Jobos, while the Salinas project has more than 757, for a combined total of 1,500 panels.
“We’re talking about a cost of this energy of no more than 12 cents per kilowatt-hour, which represents a substantial sav-
ings for consumers,” Méndez added. “Furthermore, the project features frequency backup batteries that establish parameters for greater protection against power fluctuations in the system. This is a complete, modern system, ready to provide a substantial percentage of the clean energy Puerto Rico needs in a short time.”
Accompanying the legislative leader during the tour, which lasted several hours, were Jesús Bolinaga, president of AES Puerto Rico; Víctor Parés Otero, chairman of the House Government Committee; and District 30 (Arroyo, Guayama, Salinas, and Santa Isabel) Rep. Fernando Sanabria.
Parés emphasized the technological advances of the systems integrated into the project.
“Solar panels are much more modern and efficient, capable of collecting greater energy in a larger quantity,” he said. “This is a very important project for Puerto Rico that, once online, will significantly increase renewable energy production on the island.”
Parés added that the “lifespan of these modern solar panels is 25 to 30 years, as is the case for the energy booster batteries and frequency batteries.”
“However, what makes this project unique is the system’s ability to maintain the same generation output with the addition of new components throughout its lifespan, ensuring Puerto Rico’s consistent production,” he said.
AES has also planted over 8,000 trees at the Salinas facility.
Governor enacts executive order to hasten solar projects

Gov. Jenniffer González Colón has issued an executive order directing the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority (PREPA) to expedite the evaluation and negotiation of new generation contracts that utilize clean energy sources.
The executive order, filed Monday, instructs the Puerto Rico Energy Bureau (PREB) to issue an order within five days of the executive order’s promulgation that will establish the evaluation criteria that PREPA must follow in carrying out its functions.
“It is essential to evaluate, negotiate, and promptly approve renewable energy purchase agreements (with or without storage capacity) that qualify for investment tax credits (ITCs), provided they benefit consumers and comply with existing laws,” the executive order states. “This process will facilitate
the private investments needed to construct these facilities and ensure access to safe and affordable energy, thus maintaining the continuity of commercial and industrial operations, as well as critical infrastructure.”
PREB spokesperson Sheila Angleró commented in a written statement that the “executive order clearly defines the nature of this emergency.”
“The terms outlined in the executive order do not conflict with existing laws,” she said. “Recognizing that Puerto Rico requires new generation, the Energy Bureau is ready to collaborate as needed to ensure this new generation is implemented as quickly as possible while minimizing economic impact on consumers.”
Additionally, the budget reconciliation law promoted by President Donald Trump stipulates that only solar and wind energy projects that begin construction on or before July 4, 2026,
and start commercial operation by Dec. 31, 2027, will qualify for tax incentives.
González Colón makes appointments to judiciary & Traffic Safety Commission

Gov. Jenniffer González Colón announced 10 new appointments on Wednesday, nine of which were submitted to the Senate for confirmation, and one which took effect immediately.
Among the appointments sent to the Legislature for consideration were those of Evelyn Trinidad Martell as a
Superior Court judge, Adriana Morales Rivera as an Assistant Public Prosecutor I, and Iris Alicia Martínez Juarbe for promotion to District Attorney.
The governor also nominated Haifa Notario Toll and Waleska Morales Toro as administrative judges for the Child Support Administration, Ramón Antonio Ortiz Llavona as a member of the Medical Examiners Board, Alexander Feliciano Emanuelli as a member of the Puerto
Rico Symphony Orchestra Corporation board of directors, Hiram Medina Rivera as a commissioner on the Pilotage Commission and Laudelino Mulero Clas as a municipal court judge.
In addition, the governor appointed Luis Yomar López González as a member of the Traffic Safety Commission, a position that does not require Senate confirmation and which he occupied immediately.

GOP majority in House will shrink after Democrat’s victory in Arizona

Adelita Grijalva, the daughter of a longtime Arizona congress member who died of cancer in March, Raúl Grijalva, won the race to succeed him on Tuesday, according to The Associated Press.
Once she is sworn in, Adelita Grijalva will further narrow the already slim GOP majority in the House, with 219 Republicans to 214 Democrats and two remaining vacancies. That will make the life of Speaker Mike Johnson even more difficult as he seeks to corral recalcitrant Republicans for party-line votes.
Grijalva, 54, was leading her Republican opponent, Daniel Butierez, by a wide margin when the race was called. She had been expected to easily prevail in Arizona’s heavily Democratic 7th Congressional District, a southern slice of the state that includes part
of deep-blue Tucson. Her ascension to the House was all but assured after she defeated two other Democrats — Daniel Hernandez, a former state legislator, and Deja Foxx, a Gen Z activist — in a competitive primary in July.
Grijalva’s opponents had criticized her as a “legacy last name” at a time when the Democratic Party needed to embrace fresh voices. But her ability to court the district’s Hispanic voters and her endorsements from top state Democrats showed the enduring strength of the party establishment.
In Washington, her victory could also bolster efforts from Democrats to force a vote directing the Justice Department to release all of its investigative files on Jeffrey Epstein, the convicted sex offender, which President Donald Trump and Republican leaders have opposed. Several Republicans have joined the attempt, but it remains one lawmaker short of
the support it needs.

as a discharge petition, a procedural maneuver that would allow House members to circumvent Republican leadership.
“If elected, on my very first day in Congress, I’ll sign the bipartisan discharge petition to force a vote on releasing the Epstein files,” she said in a statement Monday. It is unclear when Grijalva will officially take office. The House is not scheduled to be in a session until October, though plans could change as lawmakers work to avert a government shutdown on Oct. 1.
Man found guilty of trying to assassinate Trump in Florida

Aman who plotted to kill President Donald Trump last year and staked him out at one of his Florida golf courses with a semiautomatic rifle was found guilty Tuesday of attempting to assassinate a major presidential candidate, a charge that carries a maximum penalty of life in prison.
Ryan W. Routh, 59, an itinerant building contractor from North Carolina, was also found guilty of assaulting a federal officer and several firearm violations. The 12-member jury deliberated for about 2 1/2 hours, following a fast-moving trial in which Routh chose to defend himself without a lawyer.
After the verdict was read in court, Routh appeared to try to stab himself in the neck several times with a pen. Several United States marshals restrained him and removed him from the courtroom. He returned a few minutes later, shackled and escorted by marshals. His necktie and jacket had been removed, but he did not appear to be injured.
As he was being led out, Routh’s daughter, Sara Routh, one of several relatives present, started screaming. She yelled vulgarities and told her father that she loved him and would fight to get him out of prison.
Sara Routh declined to comment after court adjourned.
Prosecutors said that on Sept. 15, 2024, Ryan Routh pointed his rifle, with its serial number scratched off, at a Secret Service agent who spotted him in the shrubbery at the Trump International Golf Club West Palm Beach. (Routh denied that he ever took aim at anyone.) The agent fired at him, and Routh fled without firing any shots of his own. Police stopped him about 45 minutes later, driving north on Interstate 95.
“Make no mistake: The defendant was going to kill Donald Trump,” Christopher B. Browne, one of the federal prosecutors, said during his closing argument. “The defendant was just one bullet away.”
It was the second assassination attempt against Trump last year, when he was running for a new term in office.
Opening statements in the trial took place the day after influential right-wing activist Charlie Kirk was fatally shot, adding to a national surge in political violence.
Attorney General Pam Bondi said in a statement after the verdict that Routh’s conviction illustrated the Justice Department’s “commitment to punishing those who engage in political violence.”
“This attempted assassination was not only an attack on our president, but an affront to our very nation itself,” she said.
Routh is scheduled to be sentenced Dec. 18.
The rare trial of a would-be presidential
assassin was made more unusual because Routh chose to represent himself without a lawyer. His decision made the trial a lopsided one from the start, when Judge Aileen Cannon cut off Routh’s opening statement for lack of relevance. Routh’s brief cross-examinations of prosecution witnesses and the small number of defense witnesses he called made the trial much shorter than expected, lasting just 12 days.
Cannon presided in 2023 over a federal prosecution of Trump involving the mishandling of classified documents, a case she dismissed last summer.
After Routh’s arrest last year, public records and interviews with people who knew him suggested that he had become increasingly concerned over the war in Ukraine and saw himself as an influential participant in world events. Earlier this year, he told the judge that he did not trust two court-appointed federal public defenders to represent him. Even so, they were kept on standby during the trial.
At one point Monday, when the judge tried to explain certain rules of evidence, Routh responded, “I have no clue what that means.”
He offered little in the way of a defense and did not testify himself. He called three witnesses, a firearms expert and two character witnesses, all of whom testified Monday morning, after seven days of prosecution testimony.

Tuesday that prosecutors had not proven “any intent” to kill.
“The opportunity was there for the defendant to shoot the president, and yet the trigger was never pulled,” said Routh, who wore a dark jacket and red-striped tie in court. “This human being does not have the capability to harm another human being.”
Prosecutors presented testimony and evidence from a large number of law enforcement officers and other witnesses. One witness, Special Agent Kimberly McGreevy of the FBI’s Miami office, testified for more than six hours on Thursday and Friday, twice as long as all three of Routh’s witnesses combined.
One expert called by the prosecution testified about finding Routh’s fingerprint on the rifle scope. Another spoke about finding two bullet-resistant metal plates mounted to the golf course fence. A third said the rifle’s safety was in the off position when it was recovered. The Secret Service agent who spotted Routh hiding in an improvised sniper’s nest by the golf course fence described how he saw a rifle muzzle pointing through the foliage and then a pair of eyes only a few feet away from him.

Gunman kills detainee at ICE office in Dallas

Asniper perched on a nearby rooftop fired at a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement field office in Dallas on Wednesday morning, killing one detainee and critically injuring two others, the Department of Homeland Security said. It was the latest act of violence to raise fears that politically motivated attacks are increasing in the United States.

were injured in the attack.
R. Joseph Rothrock, the special agent in charge of the FBI’s Dallas field office, said that rounds found near the shooter were marked with messages that were “anti-ICE in nature.”
Kash Patel, the FBI director, posted a photo on social media showing a rifle ammunition clip, with one bullet inscribed with the words “ANTI-ICE.”
Rothrock said that the FBI was investigating the shooting as “an act of targeted violence.”

Routh had also left a box at a friend’s house in North Carolina months before his arrest. A letter in the box read, “Dear World, This was an assassination attempt on Donald Trump but I failed you.” The letter also offered a $150,000 bounty for killing the candidate.

Now the left cares about free speech again

Because there is a silver lining for most things in life, maybe there is also one for ABC’s craven (if brief) suspension, under thuggish government pressure, of Jimmy Kimmel’s late-night talk show. To wit: Now the left is once again all but unanimous in wanting to defend free speech.
That hasn’t always been the case in recent years.
It wasn’t the case when, a day before Kimmel’s suspension, Amy Klobuchar called on Congress to prevent violence like Charlie Kirk’s murder by cracking down on speech online. “I’m not for censorship, but I do think that more has to be done online,” said the Democratic senator from Minnesota. Sentences that begin “I’m not for censorship, but …” are usually calls for censorship.
It wasn’t the case this spring when Democrats in the Colorado legislature sought to criminalize some speech that “misgendered” or “deadnamed” transgender children, including custody threats to parents who refused to use their child’s preferred pronouns.
It wasn’t the case in 2023 when a RealClear Opinion Research poll found that three-fourths of Democrats believe government has a responsibility to limit “hateful” or inaccurate social media posts, as compared with roughly half of Republicans.
It wasn’t the case when, in the summer of 2021, MSNBC’s Mika Brzezinski asked, with clear relish, whether social media companies shouldn’t be “open to lawsuits” for publishing what she and the government deemed to be “misinformation” on the COVID vaccines.
It wasn’t the case when Kate Bedingfield, the White House communications director then being interviewed by Brzezinski, answered, “We’re reviewing that, and certainly they should be held accountable.”
It wasn’t the case when, in February 2021, Facebook announced that it would treat claims that “COVID-19 is manmade or manufactured” — that is, the lab-leak hypothesis — as a form of misinformation, leading to the removal of all mention of it. Mark Zuckerberg later complained that the Biden administration pressured the company to take down posts about COVID-19, including humor, according to a report in Politico.

It wasn’t the case, either, when another batch of liberal writers, including cartoonist Garry Trudeau and novelist Peter Carey, rebuked the PEN American Center for its decision to give an award to Charlie Hebdo, the French satirical newspaper that lost 12 of its staff members in a 2015 terrorist attack.
It wasn’t the case when the New York publishing industry began capitulating to social-media demands to cancel or torpedo books whose authors had run afoul of one leftwing orthodoxy or another: Jeanine Cummins and “American Dirt,” Richard North Patterson and “Trial,” Dr. Seuss and “If I Ran the Zoo” and several other titles.
It wasn’t the case when the editors of Slate indefinitely suspended podcast host Mike Pesca for arguing that it could be appropriate to mention a racial slur if not using it as an epithet. Or when The Atlantic fired conservative writer Kevin Williamson after a few days of employment because of a handful of remarks made years earlier. Or when NBC parted ways with Megyn Kelly because she said (and then apologized for saying) that, in her childhood, using blackface was “OK as long as you were dressing up like a character.”
It wasn’t the case in 2021 when the Massachusetts Institute of Technology canceled a prestigious science lecture by geophysicist Dorian Abbot because it didn’t like his views about diversity, equity and inclusion efforts. Or when Harvard University pushed out evolutionary biologist Carole Hooven because of her insistence on the fundamental reali-
ties of sex differences. Or when Jason Kilborn, a professor at the University of Illinois, Chicago (a public university), was suspended merely for referring to two slurs without specifically mentioning the actual slurs.
Some readers might argue that the effort to cancel Kimmel is unique — and uniquely dangerous — because it was pushed by Brendan Carr, chair of the Federal Communications Commission. That is true, but then why the comparative liberal silence about the Biden administration’s efforts to police speech on social media? Others might argue that COVID misinformation or hate speech should be subject to different rules from mundane political speech. More than a century of First Amendment jurisprudence, from liberal and conservative justices alike, says otherwise.
And then there are those who point to the hypocrisy of conservatives, Carr not least, who rail against censorship and cancellation when it comes from the left and then enforce their own cancel (or consequence) culture the moment they are in power. A very fair point — and all the more reason for liberals to stick by liberal principles when it comes to their own side’s self-appointed censors.
It’s a cliché, but can’t be said enough, that speech is genuinely free only when it is speech we like the least from those we dislike the most. Rosa Luxemburg put it well: “Freedom is always and exclusively freedom for the one who thinks differently.”

Hombre de 27 años de Humacao acusado en tribunal federal por explotación

SAN JUAN – Agentes del Negociado Federal de Investigaciones (FBI, por sus siglas en inglés) arrestaron el miércoles a Jan Robert Ayala De Jesús, un hombre de 27
años de Humacao, tras ser acusado por un gran jurado federal de cargos relacionados con explotación infantil, informó el fiscal federal para el Distrito de Puerto Rico, W. Stephen Muldrow.
De acuerdo con documentos judiciales, el 18 de diciembre de 2024 Ayala De Jesús transportó a una menor de 13 años con la intención de que participara en actos sexuales, conducta que constituye delito bajo las leyes federales y de Puerto Rico.
“Nuestro equipo de fiscales, especialistas de apoyo a víctimas y personal continuará trabajando con nuestros socios del orden público para combatir la explotación infantil y llevar a los ofensores ante la justicia. Este tipo de conducta no tiene cabida en una sociedad civilizada”, dijo Muldrow en declaraciones escritas.
El agente especial a cargo de la oficina del FBI en San Juan, Devin Kowalski, sostuvo que proteger a los menores es una de las prioridades de la agencia. “Nuestro trabajo no termina con este arresto. Continuaremos

enfocados en identificar a cada víctima y asegurarnos de que cada depredador enfrente todo el peso del sistema judicial”, expresó.

CCardinale, actress who was ‘Italy’s girlfriend,’ is dead at 87
laudia Cardinale, a leading lady of Italian cinema in the 1960s, whose voluptuous beauty was celebrated by film directors Luchino Visconti, Sergio Leone and Federico Fellini as she drew acclaim as Italy’s “dream girl,” has died in Nemours, France. She was 87.
Her agent, Laurent Savry, confirmed the death to Agence France-Presse on Tuesday. The cause was not reported. Cardinale had lived in Nemours, south of Paris, in recent years.
Cardinale appeared in more than 150 movies during her six-decade career in Europe. She also starred in a number of Hollywood films, including Blake Edwards’ comedy classic “The Pink Panther.”
She was Marcello Mastroianni’s feminine ideal in Fellini’s “8 1/2,” a bordello owner who bankrolls an outlandish scheme by her lover to build an opera house in the Amazon jungle in Werner Herzog’s “Fitzcarraldo,” and a widow gunslinger in Leone’s “Once Upon a Time in the West.”
Cardinale was often grouped with Sophia Loren and Gina Lollobrigida as the Italian sex symbols of the 1960s and ’70s, though she had a slightly more approachable screen persona, Massimo Benvegnù, an Italian film critic, said in an interview.
“The stars at the time, Anita Ekberg, Sophia Loren, Brigitte Bardot and Jayne Mansfield — the ones known as the ‘maggiorate’ — were very curvaceous women,” he added. “She was less curvaceous and more girl next door. She was more real.”
But acting had not been her ambition as a teenager, and for part of her career, she had trouble speaking Italian because she had grown up speaking French.
Claude Joséphine Rose Cardinale was born April 15, 1938, in the French protectorate of Tunisia to Francesco Cardinale and Yolanda Greco, immigrants from Sicily.
She was the eldest of four siblings raised in a tight-knit Sicilian community in Tunis, the nation’s capital. Her father was a technical engineer for the Tunisian railway, and her mother managed the home.
Claude was 18 when she entered a beauty pageant that had been orchestrated in part by her mother at the Italian Embassy in Tunisia. She was crowned the “most beautiful Italian girl in Tunisia.” Her prize was a trip to the Venice Film Festival, where she was widely photographed by the Italian media. (It was because of her bikini, she later said.) Even though she had already appeared in a few films, she told reporters in interviews at the time that she didn’t aspire to become an actress.
“After that, she was on the cover of all the Italian magazines, under headlines like, ‘Here’s the girl who doesn’t want to make movies,’” Benvegnù said.
Claude returned to Tunisia to live with her parents, rejecting acting offers. When she was still a teenager, she was sexually assaulted by an adult acquaintance, who coerced her into an abusive relationship that led to her becoming pregnant, her daughter, Claudia Squitieri, said in an interview. In 1957, she gave birth to a son, Patrick, in London. Given the circumstances, her parents raised him as her younger brother; they did not tell him the truth until he was 8 years old.
That year, Italian producer Franco Cristaldi signed her
to his film studio, Vides Cinematografica (now Cristaldifilm), and Claude launched her career as Claudia Cardinale.
Her breakout role was in the comedic crime story “Big Deal on Madonna Street,”, directed by Mario Monicelli and released in 1958. She starred in several major films in quick succession, including, in 1963, Fellini’s Oscar-winning “8 1/2” and Visconti’s “The Leopard.”
“Then she just became known as ‘Italy’s girlfriend,’ the girl of your dreams,” Benvegnù said.
Cardinale also starred in Luigi Comencini’s “La Ragazza di Bube,” or “Bebo’s Girl” (1964), a commercial and critical success; it earned her Italy’s Nastro d’Argento award for best actress, her first prestigious acting honor. She played Mara, a peasant girl from Tuscany who, at the end of World War II, falls in love with a young partisan (George Chakiris) who must go into hiding after being accused of involvement in a double homicide.

Cardinale divorced Cristaldi around 1975 to live with Pasquale Squitieri, an independent filmmaker who was known as a right-leaning provocateur. “In a sense, she wanted to emancipate herself,” Monda said. “She didn’t want to be thought of as only the product of a great producer.”
In later interviews, Cardinale described her relationship with Cristaldi as being under his complete control. He dictated nearly every aspect of her life, she said, and kept most of the salary she earned when she was lent to American filmmakers. “I was just an employee, like an office worker,” she told Variety.
The relationship grew strained, and her subsequent affair with Squitieri led to what Cardinale called their effective blackballing from the Italian film industry. She said she left for France to restart her career, taking supporting roles.
She married Cristaldi in Las Vegas, in 1966. But she did not consider the marriage “official,” Squitieri said, even though Cristaldi gave her son his last name.
In the Fellini film, set in a luxurious spa, Cardinale played an actress and muse figure (also named Claudia) to the protagonist, a director named Guido Anselmi (Marcello Mastroianni). He sees her as embodying his ideal woman and envisions her as the ingénue of a science fiction film he plans to make.
In Visconti’s period drama “The Leopard,” she played a young Sicilian debutante who quickly wins the hearts of a soldier (Alain Delon) and his uncle (Burt Lancaster). In her 2005 autobiography, “Mes Étoiles” (“My Stars”), written with Danièle Georget, she wrote, “You can learn beauty. Visconti taught me how to be beautiful. He taught me to cultivate mystery, without which, he said, there cannot be real beauty.”
In 1964, Cardinale took a comic turn when she worked for the first time with an American director, Blake Edwards. She played a princess who loses a precious jewel in “The Pink Panther,” which also starred Peter Sellers, David Niven and Robert Wagner.
Another career-defining role for Cardinale came in Leone’s 1968 spaghetti western, “Once Upon a Time in the West,” in which she played a New Orleans prostitute who moves to the Southwest to marry a man who, by the time she arrives, has been murdered by bandits.
As the sole female character in a cast of male antiheroes led by Charles Bronson and Henry Fonda, Cardinale “was able to hold her own with these extremely strong, major actors, and conveying a sense of interiority that is quite palpable,” said Jay Weissberg, an American film critic based in Rome. Her rugged independence in that film also became a signature of her career, said Antonio Monda, artistic director of the Rome Film Festival. “There was something free about
Cardinale appeared in almost a dozen of Squitieri’s films. They had a daughter in 1979 and stayed together for 40 years, until his death in 2017.
“It was an unconventional relationship,” Claudia Squitieri said of her parents, who lived together until 1989 and remained extremely close afterward.
Cardinale also appeared as part of an all-star cast in the 1977 television miniseries “Jesus of Nazareth,” directed by Franco Zeffirelli. She played an adulteress who is threatened with stoning.
Early in her career, Cardinale had modeled herself on Bardot, her co-star in the 1971 French western comedy “Les Pétroleuses” (“The Legend of Frenchie King”), directed by Christian-Jaque. That film, which parodied Hollywood tropes, included all-female shootouts and a rough-and-tumble fistfight between the two leading ladies.
“Bardot was her idol,” Squitieri said. “Everyone was expecting a big rivalry between them, but they actually became very good friends.”
In Herzog’s “Fitzcarraldo” (1982), Cardinale, though in a supporting role (opposite Klaus Kinski as the title character), was essential to the story as the brothel madame whose faith in her lover’s scheme to build an opera house in the Amazon invigorates his bizarre attempt, as part of the plan, to drag a steamship over a mountain.
“Miss Cardinale is not on screen as long as one might wish, but she not only lights up her role, she also lights up Mr. Kinski,” Vincent Canby wrote in The New York Times, noting that she “helps to transform Mr. Kinski into a genuinely charming screen presence.”
The film took the top award at the Cannes Film Festival and won Cardinale a host of new admirers, putting her on film producers’ and casting directors’ radar once more for years to come.

While much has been made of the performance of the socalled “Magnificent 7” since 2022, European defense stocks have had an even more impressive rally, led by an almost 2,000% rise in Europe’s biggest ammunition maker Rheinmetall. As Typhoon Ragasa neared Taiwan, rain pounded a little-known lake in the upper reaches of a mountain range on the island’s eastern coast.
After nearly two days, the lake burst through its dams Tuesday afternoon, unleashing torrents of water that careered down the side of a mountain and inundated the rural town of Guangfu, home to 10,000 people. By Wednesday, at least 17 people had been confirmed dead and 17 others were missing.
Residents of Guangfu, a picturesque tourist destination, were left grappling with the damage wrought by Ragasa, the most powerful storm in the world so far this year. Many people who live in Guangfu are older adults.
Business owners in the town tried to salvage their properties, many of which were covered in mud and damaged by the torrents of water. The owner of one bookstore said that water had flooded in so fast that the glass windows of her shop were smashed.
Other residents said that flooded ground floors forced them to take refuge on higher levels. Rescuers had to break the doors and

windows of some buildings to reach those trapped inside.
Guangfu, which is part of Hualien county, is in a less-populated part of Taiwan that is known for agriculture and tourism. Officials said that more than 700 acres of farmland for rice, corn and other crops had been submerged, which is expected to cause millions of dollars in losses in Guangfu and nearby towns.
“The water came too quickly,” said Tseng Shu-cheng, 70, the owner of a hostel that is near where most of the casualties were
found. She said that she had waited on the second floor of her building all Tuesday night because she had been too afraid to come out, even as the waters receded. “I have never in my life seen such terrifying scenes,” she added.
Since Tuesday, social media platforms have been flooded with messages from people trying to find missing family members. Hundreds of firefighters and soldiers dispatched to Guangfu have gone door to door to check for trapped residents.
One group of siblings returned home to find that their 90-year-old mother had died in her bed during the flooding. Water marks on the bedroom wall rose as high as five feet. They believe their mother was unable to escape in time.
Typhoon Ragasa did not make landfall in Taiwan but still wrought havoc on the island. Shun Chi-ming, the former director of the Hong Kong Observatory, a government weather monitor, said rising temperatures in the sea and atmosphere caused heavier rainfall during typhoons. That is why the Hualien area experienced “such severe damage and loss of life” even though Ragasa was relatively far away, he said.
Residents said that cars and refrigerators had floated away as the floodwaters rose. One of the town’s main bridges was also destroyed.
Officials said that an evacuation notice for residents had been issued at 7 a.m. Tuesday. However, not all residents left.
Taiwan’s premier, Cho Jung-tai, visited Guangfu on Wednesday and said that the government would investigate why evacuations “were not carried out in areas where they were requested.”
At a makeshift shelter Wednesday, government officials suddenly began shouting for residents to go to a higher floor because they feared another wave of flooding. People rushed to get upstairs and helped carry those who could not walk. In the chaos, a woman was injured.
Elsewhere, trucks kept pulling up in front of schools, churches and day care centers that had been turned into temporary shelters to deliver donated supplies like food, water and diapers.
As of Wednesday, the heaviest rains had stopped. Left behind was damage, heartbreak, and, Guangfu residents said, a long road to recovery.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of Ukraine appealed for more military aid to keep fighting Russia in a speech at the U.N. General Assembly on Wednesday. His call to arms, accompanied by warnings that the world is entering a new era in military technology, came a day after President Donald Trump signaled renewed backing for Ukraine in its war with Russia.
Invoking incursions by Russian drones into Poland and Estonia in recent weeks, which have raised tensions between Europe and Russia, Zelenskyy stressed the need for more
weapons even as he warned that they were evolving in ways that now endanger all nations. Drones might one day allow terrorists or states to deliver a nuclear device, he said, adding that the unchecked rise of artificial intelligence was creating new dangers.
“We are now living through the most destructive arms race in human history,” Zelenskyy said.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian spoke three months after his country was engaged in an intense 12-day war with Israel that culminated with a U.S. strike on Iranian nuclear facilities. He portrayed Iran as a victim of military aggression and said it “has never sought or will never seek to build a nuclear bomb,” reiterating comments made by the country’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, on Tuesday.
Syria’s new president, Ahmad al-Sharaa, made his debut on the global stage, becoming the first leader of the country to address the General Assembly since 1967. Al-Sharaa, who led opposition forces that toppled the decades-long reign of the Assad family, detailed the major steps his government has taken to rebuild the country and its institutions; criticized Israeli airstrikes on Syrian territory; and sought redefine the international image of his country.

— Ukraine war: Zelenskyy addressed the U.N. after Trump said Ukraine could reclaim all territory lost in the war, an apparent U-turn in his view of the conflict. The Ukrainian leader delivered his speech as tensions between Europe and Russia are high, after Russian fighter jets and drones entered the airspace of Romania, Poland and Estonia, three NATO members.
— Nuclear negotiations: Pezeshkian appeared at a moment of diplomatic urgency for Iran, which faces the possibility that the U.N. will reimpose sanctions this week if there is no breakthrough on nuclear negotiations with Britain, France and Germany. His speech offered little insight into Iran’s strategy for resolving the standoff over its nuclear program.
— AI worries: Security Council members have said they fear that artificial intelligence could pose a major threat if left unchecked, a point echoed by Zelenskyy, who warned in his speech of its potential military uses. U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres has called for a global watchdog to oversee the technology and create rules to govern it.
— Climate change: At a climate summit to be hosted by Guterres, U.N. member states will present their national plans before the COP30 climate conference in Brazil in November. Global warming has been one of Guterres’ priorities at the U.N.
Drone strike in Haiti kills 8 children at a birthday party

Eleven civilians, including eight children, were killed last Saturday in Haiti’s capital when drones aimed at a gang leader struck a birthday party where community members had gathered, a human rights group said.
In March, authorities in Haiti hired foreign military contractors to operate armed drones to target gangs that terrorize the capital, Port-au-Prince. The contractors work for a company owned by Erik Prince, a prominent supporter of President Donald Trump.
Experts have warned that the strikes were not only a violation of international law, because there is no officially declared armed conflict in the country, but also bound to inflict collateral damage in densely populated urban areas where gang members operate.
While two police officers were accidentally killed by a drone last month and two civilian adults died in drone strikes in June, Saturday’s episode was believed to be the first time children were among the victims.
Two “kamikaze” drones were deployed Saturday evening in Simon Pelé, a gang-controlled area in Cité Soleil, a large, impoverished neighborhood near Port-au-Prince’s airport, according to the National Human Rights Defense Network.
The target was Albert Steevenson, a gang leader also known as Djouma, who was celebrating his birthday and distributing gifts to children, the human rights group said. Steevenson escaped unscathed.
The first drone killed eight children, ages 2 to 10, and three adults. Six more children were injured, the human rights group said. All of them were civilians.
A second drone fell near the gang’s headquarters, killing four gang members and injuring seven others, said Pierre Espérance, executive director of the National Human Rights Defense Network.
A pregnant woman was among the dead, according to a person familiar with the case who was not authorized to speak publicly.
Jimmy Chérizier, a gang leader known as Barbecue, blamed the errant drone strike on the administration of Alix Didier Fils-Aimé, the prime minister who hired the contractors to take on gangs. He denied reports that gang members had been killed, saying only civilians had died.
He said 150 to 200 children had gathered in a park to receive cash gifts for
Steevenson’s birthday.
“No armed person died, but many people in the civilian population are victims,” Chérizier said in a video posted on YouTube, where he showed gruesome photos of the dead children.
“The government of Fils-Aimé continues to massacre people in working-class neighborhoods,” he said.
Witnesses told The Associated Press that children had been left mangled.
Michelin Florville told the news agency the explosion had killed two of his grandchildren, ages 3 and 7, and his 32-year-old son.
“People were running right and left,” he was quoted saying.
Haitian gangs are known to use civilians as a shield to protect themselves from drones. Members of the task force operating the drones knew that it was Steevenson’s birthday and that civilians would be present, according to two people familiar with the episode who were not authorized to speak publicly.
A Haitian National Police spokesperson declined to comment. Fils-Aimé’s office also declined to comment, citing an active investigation. A spokesperson for the presidential council did not respond to a request for more information.
Prince, the U.S. military defense contractor, did not respond to requests for com-
ment. It was unclear whether his contractors or the Haitian police were responsible for Saturday’s attack.
Espérance said there was no accountability for civilians killed in drone strikes and added that while many gang members had been killed, no leaders had been hit.
“On the contrary, these leaders have grown more at ease and increasingly arrogant, even moving openly in convoys,” Espérance said.
Espérance said 11 civilians were killed in a different drone strike Sept. 6 in downtown Port-au-Prince.
Still, many Haitians view the drone strikes as a much-needed last resort for a nation that is plagued by violence and feels abandoned by the international community.
The U.N. mandate for a multinational security force led by Kenya, which is widely viewed as a failure, expires next week, and that could lead to the mission’s departure from Haiti.
The United States and Panama have proposed a larger gang suppression force with at least 5,500 people, more than five times the size of the current deployment.
Despite the contributions of Kenya and other countries, “the mission currently lacks the mandate and the resources necessary to address the mounting scale of the challenge,” Christopher Landau, the U.S. deputy secre-

tary of state, said Monday in New York after meeting with Kenya’s president.
The U.N. Security Council is expected to vote soon on the proposal, but Russia and China, which have veto power, have expressed reservations.

Jimmy Kimmel broke his silence on Tuesday night in an emotional return to ABC’s airwaves, by turns defiant, joking and somber as he addressed the controversy that temporarily sidelined his latenight show and set off a national debate over free speech.
His voice breaking at times, Kimmel said he understood why his comments last week about the suspected shooter of right-wing activist Charlie Kirk seemed “ill-timed, or unclear, or maybe both.” He added, “It was never my intention to make light of the murder of a young man.”
But Kimmel also had harsh words for President Donald Trump and the government regulator who suggested that the Trump administration would punish ABC because of his remarks, saying that “a government threat to silence a comedian the president doesn’t like is anti-American.”
“This show is not important,” Kimmel said in his opening monologue. “What’s important is that we get to live in a country that allows us to have a show like this.”

Executives at Disney, ABC’s parent company, pulled “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” off the air last week, shortly after the chair of the Federal Communications Commission, Brendan Carr, suggested that his agency could take action against the network.
On Tuesday, Kimmel said he disagreed with Disney’s decision to pull his show. But he also credited the company, where he has worked for 22 years, for defending his
right to poke fun at the powerful.
“Unfortunately, and I think unjustly, this puts them at risk,” Kimmel said. “The president of the United States made it very clear he wants to see me and the hundreds of people who work here fired from our jobs. Our leader celebrates Americans losing their livelihoods because he can’t take a joke.”
Kimmel’s abrupt and unlikely role as a martyr for the First Amendment was apparent outside the host’s Hollywood Boulevard studio Tuesday in the hours before his taping began. About a dozen supporters gathered with supportive placards, including a man in head-to-toe patriotic garb brandishing a large sign that read “Liberty.”
“Today, free speech won,” said Gregg Donovan, 65, of Santa Monica, California, who held a sign reading “Welcome Back Jimmy.” “I’m happy for Jimmy and wanted to welcome him back. Hollywood missed him.”
The longtime ABC star was sidelined Sept. 17, just hours after Carr criticized Kimmel. “We can do this the easy way or the hard way,” Carr said in suggesting the FCC could take action against ABC and Disney.

Tearing up, he also praised Erika Kirk, Kirk’s widow, who at a public memorial Sunday said that she forgave the person accused of murdering her husband. “It touched me deeply,” Kimmel said, his voice hoarse. “If there’s anything we should take from this tragedy to carry forward, I hope it can be that, and not this.”
Kimmel’s return to the airwaves Tuesday was one of the most anticipated episodes of late-night television in years. Even Trump weighed in before it began.
“I can’t believe ABC Fake News gave Jimmy Kimmel his job back,” he complained in a social media post, roughly an hour before Kimmel’s show was set to air. Trump suggested that he might sue ABC over its reinstatement of Kimmel — “I think we’re going to test ABC out on this,” he wrote — and cited a $16 million payment that the network

The suspension of “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” quickly turned into a flashpoint about free speech in America. Liberals, and even some conservatives, said the pressure Carr applied to ABC represented a chilling suppression of the First Amendment. Carr tried to minimize his role this week, saying that Disney had made “a business decision,” and that accusations of suppression of free speech were part of “a campaign of projection and distortion.”
On Sept. 15, Kimmel used his opening monologue to say that “the MAGA gang” was “desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them, and doing everything they can to score political points from it.”
It took about a day for his comments to gain steam on social media but, once they did, conservatives pounced. They said Kimmel had mischaracterized the political beliefs of Tyler Robinson, the accused shooter. Carr said that his comments were part of a “concerted effort to lie to the American people.”

Bogotá to host ‘Night of Champions’ during 38th WBO Convention

The World Boxing Organization (WBO) announced earlier this week that the Colombian capital will host the “Night of Champions” as part of its 38th Annual Convention, which will take place Oct. 27-31.
“For the WBO, it is an honor to hold this major event in Bogotá, a vibrant city that welcomes us with its culture, hospitality, and passion for boxing,” WBO President Francisco “Paco” Valcárcel said in a written statement. “The ‘Night of Champions’ will be an occasion to pay tribute to the greatness of our boxers and share our organization’s legacy with the world.”

U-25 men’s softball league to open Oct. 10

Puerto Rico Olympic Committee Secretary General Carlos Beltrán announced Wednesday that the U-25 men’s softball season will begin on Friday, Oct. 10 with a doubleheader between the Leones of Ponce and the República Sabaneña Softball Club of Sabana Grande at Quintín Hernández Park starting at 6 p.m.
The third team in action will be the Caribeños of Salinas.
“The goal is to revitalize softball in its respective region, which is why each team will have four home games. We want to create an atmosphere where each organization can generate revenue by hosting games,” Beltrán said in a written statement. “This is a project with an eye on the 2030 national team, and we must put all our effort into making it work; enthusiasm is the key to our success.”
The schedule stipulates that each team will play eight games in the regular season, ending on Oct. 31. The top two
teams will advance to the best-of-seven Championship Series, which is scheduled to begin on Nov. 11.
During a virtual meeting on Sept. 22, Norberto Santana, a lawyer with experience in women’s softball, was introduced as the league director.
“I am grateful for the appointment and the confidence placed in me to lead the U-25 men’s season,” Santana said. “Puerto Rico was a powerhouse in men’s softball, and we want to regain that position. I am aware that we have to work hard, and I thank the three team owners for taking this important first step. I am sure it will be a good start.”
The official detailed that the process of filing contracts, certifying bats, and designating playing fields has already begun: in Sabana Grande, the field will be Quintín Hernández Park; in Ponce, Toño Feliciano field at the Los Caobos Sports Complex; and in Salinas, Gerardo “Lyn” Sanabria field in the Plena neighborhood.

Santurce moves into top spot in BSNF

The Cangrejeras of Santurce defeated the Atenienses of Manatí 66-61 on Tuesday night in a Puerto Rico Women’s Basketball League (BSNF by its initials in Spanish) game at Roberto Clemente Coliseum in Hato Rey.
Santurce led at halftime, 36-35, then in the third quarter, consecutive baskets by Oshlynn Brown and Dayshalee Salamán gave the Cangrejeras a 42-39 lead with 7:12 remaining. With 32 seconds left in the quarter,
a layup by Nairimar Vargas extended the 2024 champions’ lead to 54-45, their largest of the night.
Vargas and Shae Kelley each scored 13 points. Kelley also had 13 rebounds. Brown finished with 11 points for the new league leaders.
Pamela Rosado led Manatí with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Chelsea Mitchell and India Pagán each scored 12 points, and Pagán also grabbed 12 rebounds. Kaela Hilaire chipped in with 10 points.
Manatí’s record fell to 4-6, putting them in a tie for seventh place with the Vaqueras of Hatillo.
