Dignity Project rips high court ruling on minority parties

As the Dignity Project (Proyecto Dignidad) political party sees it, the island Supreme Court has dealt a significant blow to the transparency and fairness of democratic processes in Puerto Rico by upholding the constitutionality of key provisions of the 2020 Electoral Code that “unjustifiably and alarmingly” discriminate against minority parties.
“This decision represents a severe setback for Puerto Rican democracy and perpetuates a system that favors majority parties, depriving minority parties of equal representation within the State Elections Commission (SEC),” the Dignity Project (DP) said about the top court ruling issued Friday.
Rodríguez, emphasized that the challenged provisions generate arbitrary distinctions between politically similar parties, directly undermining the representation of DP voters. The system threatens the very essence of democracy by fortifying the dominance of majority parties while restricting political plurality, they wrote.

Right after the election, the SEC told the DP that it had to shut down its offices at the SEC and that it no longer had the right to have an electoral commissioner because it had obtained less than 25% in full votes. The party appealed the SEC’s decision, arguing that its constitutional rights had been violated, but the top court sided with the SEC.
DP officials will hold a press conference today at SEC headquarters to protest the ruling.
“This inequitable arrangement compromises our democratic system, as the ruling is based on the erroneous assertion that the challenged provisions do not create suspect classifications or violate fundamental rights to equality and free association,” the group said.

“The historical context of these legislative provisions does not convincingly justify these limitations. According to our Constitution, any party that surpasses the necessary threshold of votes to maintain its electoral franchise deserves equal voice and representation in the SEC,” the DP said. “However, the current system deliberately restricts the participation of certain parties, ignoring the fundamental principle that “the electoral system is not an expense but a vital investment to guarantee democracy in Puerto Rico.”
The DP views the decision as a weakening of fundamental rights.
“It is imperative to emphasize that this ruling affects not only Proyecto Dignidad but every voter who yearns for a truly inclusive system, where their vote is not merely a symbolic act but a genuine instrument of representation,” DP President Dr. César Vázquez Muñiz stated. “Limiting the equitable representation of parties diminishes oversight, distorts the spirit of democratic collaboration, and erodes citizens’ trust in our institutions.”
Juan M. Frontera Suau, the DP electoral commissioner, pointed out that “[a]s the dissenting opinions indicated, the State failed to demonstrate a compelling public interest to justify this disproportionate exclusion.”
“This action not only penalizes minority parties but also denies voters their right to effective representation, violating essential democratic principles,” he said. “At Proyecto Dignidad, we reaffirm our commitment to defending the fundamental rights of every Puerto Rican citizen. This fight is not just for our party; it is for everyone who believes in a transparent, fair, and pluralistic system.”
DP Secretary General Nilda Pérez Martínez said: “This grave setback will not go unnoticed. We will take our voice to every corner of the island, advocating for the principle of electoral equality that we hold dear.”
“We urge all Puerto Ricans to join this demand for democratic justice,” she added. “Today more than ever, Puerto Rico needs strong and determined voices to challenge attempts to consolidate power in the hands of a few.”
Education secretary supports ban on cellphones in schools

Island Education Secretary Eliezer Ramos Parés has expressed his support for a proposed ban on cellphones in public schools.
The legislation, penned by New Progressive Party Rep. Jorge Navarro Suárez, would ban cell phone use in public schools through eighth grade, despite existing regulations on the matter. The official made his remarks during a weekend press conference at La Fortaleza, where he also announced that dozens of schools will begin a modernization process that may involve adjustments to student schedules for the upcoming school year.
“Cellphones are essentially prohibited in schools. Our regulations allow their use only if an educational plan is in place, which means that their use is dependent on the discretion of teachers and school principals,”
Ramos Parés said. “The tools for oversight are already in place. Making it a law has opened up a necessary conversation in public, and we want to emphasize the responsibilities of parents regarding device usage, as well as the responsibilities of school officials.”
“I have not opposed the bill because it elevates the discussion, which is already being covered by various media,” the education secretary continued. “It has been proven that cell phones can be a distraction. Those who advocate for keeping cell phones often do so as a protective measure. We are looking for alternatives for students, as this issue also indicates a lack of control. A cell phone allows a student to access the internet, and we know the potential issues this can create. I cannot control what students view online, but the school’s internet has certain safeguards to limit access to inappropriate websites.”
“Raising concerns and enabling some form of supervision or monitoring with cellphones is challenging,” Ramos Parés added. “The reality is that I support not allowing cell-
phones in schools. If there are ongoing discussions among all parties, we know that teachers are on the front lines with our students. Our principals are exploring alternatives, such as purchasing lockers or finding ways to block cellphone signals within schools. However, it is also true that these solutions may have their drawbacks.”
The official clarified that: “While I believe we do not need to legislate everything, the discussions prompted by this measure [...] have raised awareness among parents about the implications of having a cellphone in a student’s backpack.”
“I do not have all the solutions for each family’s circumstances, but I am convinced that the use of cellphones in school is detrimental to students’ development and attention to their educational environment,” the official said.
Lawmaker demands explanation for clandestine dump in Villalba

Rep. José Aponte Hernández on Sunday demanded an explanation from Sen. Luis Javier Hernández Ortiz, the former mayor of Villalba and current Popular Democratic Party (PDP) minority leader in the upper chamber, for leaving a clandestine dump on the premises of the municipal Department of Public Works.
“Yesterday, the mayor of Villalba, Dan Santiago, along with the governor and the secretary of the Department of Natural and Environmental Resources (DNER), visited the municipal Public Works facilities to support the mayor’s efforts to clean up the
area. During the process, an excavator came across the chassis of several motor vehicles buried in the ground and hidden from view,” Aponte said in a written statement. “This facility is, essentially, a clandestine landfill that poses an environmental hazard to the residents of that town. We recognize the current mayor’s efforts to clean up the environmental mess left by the current PDP Senate minority leader, but there must be accountability for these actions.”
“We are told that the Municipality, under Hernández, buried motor vehicles, including ambulances, in the aforementioned [property] without any permission from any state or federal agency, and in silence so as
not to be discovered,” the veteran New Progressive Party lawmaker added. “Given this reality, I call on the secretary of the DNER […] to initiate an investigation into these serious allegations and hold accountable those who clearly committed environmental crimes in the municipality of Villalba.” Gov. Jenniffer González Colón and several agency heads, including DNER Secretary Waldemar Quiles Pérez, visited the aforementioned area; they brought heavy equipment to support the mayor’s efforts to remove debris and solid waste from the area, as well as what was found underground, including what was left of several motor vehicles.
Lawmaker files anti-fraud legislation to tackle text message-based scams

Rep. Edgar Robles Rivera, who chairs the Consumer Affairs Committee in the lower chamber, filed House Bill 632 over the weekend, with which he seeks to “put a stop to the endless scams that are born through text messages, sent by hundreds of unauthorized companies or businesses and that include suspicious links that are very difficult to verify.”
The measure establishes that only duly reg-
istered companies will be able to send messages to consumers and that such messages must be limited to informative texts, without including purchase links or requests for personal data.
“Any communication that requires action, on the part of the customer, must be channeled through secure and recognizable means,” the District 14 (Arecibo and Hatillo) legislator said.
“Recently, many people have received messages with suspicious links, sent by unauthorized companies or businesses, and it is not always
possible for them to verify their authenticity. This situation must be stopped to protect citizens from falling prey to these scams.”
The bill also proposes that an official list of companies authorized to send the aforementioned messages be created. In addition, it requires the most sensitive services, such as banking or government, to use two-step verification to protect information.
“Companies that do not comply with these rules will be fined,” he stressed.
Likewise, the bill establishes that telephone companies must install filters that block “malicious messages” before they reach phones. Guidance campaigns will also be promoted, especially those aimed at the elderly and others with less experience with technology.
The legislation seeks to strengthen the digital security of citizens, protect their information and prevent them from continuing to be victimized by scams perpetrated through mobile phones.

Mayors Federation denounces drastic cuts to financially ailing towns

Puerto Rico Mayors Federation President Gabriel Hernández Rodríguez on Sunday firmly denounced the budget presented by the Financial Oversight and Management Board for the upcoming fiscal year for including drastic cuts to municipalities that are already in financial distress.
During a press conference, Hernández, who is also the mayor of Camuy, insisted that the oversight board is wrong to continue slashing funding for municipalities, especially after progress has been evident across some agencies and the board previously agreed to allocate certain funds. The Mayors Federation is composed of mayors from the New Progressive Party.
“Today, we demand the immediate distribution of the remaining $1.1 million from the Essential Services Fund, which had an overall allocation of $30 million. Municipalities such as Yauco, Ceiba, Vega Baja, Guánica, Camuy and Jayuya have submitted their requests and deserve prompt attention” the mayor asserted. “Additionally, we expect an update on the status of undisbursed allocations, including $35 million for municipal initiatives, $49.5 million for Hurricane Fiona recovery projects, and $3 million set aside for the Planning Board’s land use plans. With only 43 days left in this fiscal year, inaction is unacceptable and we have yet to receive responses to

Hernández was joined at the press conference by the mayors of Orocovis, Jesús Colón Berlingeri; Villalba, Dan Santiago; Cidra, Delvis Pagán Clavijo; and Karina Nieves Serrano of Aguas Buenas, all united in their strong condemnation of the $151.8 million cut to municipali-
ties proposed in the latest budget presented to the Legislative Assembly.
“This decision was made without addressing our serious concerns or those of the Mayors Association,” Hernández said. “The [oversight board] must engage in meaningful dialogue with the mayors and heed our concerns, ideas, and proposals. Over the last four years, we successfully negotiated an unprecedented allocation of $212.6 million for municipal governments, facilitated by the leadership of Senate President Thomas Rivera Schatz. We have consistently demonstrated that municipalities meet the oversight requirements and expectations.”
Noting that the Mayors Federation “is prepared to engage in dialogue, and we won’t back down,” Hernández added: “We will not allow these hardwon achievements to be undermined, nor will we tolerate the exclusion of mayors from the budget process. This is wholly unacceptable.”
He said he will formally communicate to the legislative leaders and the oversight board the minimum funding necessary for municipalities to operate effectively in the next fiscal year.
“The fiscal challenges facing municipalities are well known and critical,” Hernández said. “If we don’t act responsibly now, our situation will deteriorate further. Municipal governments serve as the first line of response in any emergency. We demand respect, urgent dialogue, and immediate action.”
Fiscal board orders Education Dept. to submit plan to address funding gaps

The Financial Oversight and Management Board has ordered the Puerto Rico Education Department (PRDE) to submit a comprehensive year-by-year plan by this Friday to address existing funding gaps for the remainder of fiscal year (FY) 2025 and the following five fiscal years.
The order follows a letter from the agency dated March 22, in which the PRDE described how it is managing the financial challenges resulting from a U.S. Department of Education (USDE) announcement stating that March 28, 2025 is the deadline for liquidating obligations under programs funded by the Education Stabilization Fund, the Coronavirus Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act of 2021, and the American Rescue Plan. Since then, the USDE has re-evaluated its decision and is considering extensions for individual projects.
In the March 22 letter, the PRDE outlined preliminary plans for its ongoing initiatives should the USDE deny the extension request it filed. According to the oversight board, “As of today, 36 essential initiatives remain unresolved, representing a funding gap of $199.9 million for the current fiscal year 2025, with the potential for additional costs related
to the state portion of initiatives that may be shifted to the Consolidated Schoolwide Fund (SW).”
The oversight board added that the FY 2025 budget “remains unbalanced, as the PRDE has neither identified a viable funding source nor submitted a plan to adjust spending in compliance with the certified General Fund budget.”
“Additionally, PRDE has not outlined a strategy to prevent the accumulation of obligations should the USDE deny the requested extension,” the board said.
While the March 22 letter indicates that certain recurring initiatives supported by one-time federal funds are critical to the PRDE’s strategy, according to the oversight board no plan has been presented to support that claim in alignment with the commonwealth’s financial and operational objectives.
The PRDE is the largest government agency in Puerto Rico, with a budget of $5.3 billion for FY 2025 across all funding sources. Some 46% of the PRDE’s budget is funded by federal sources. In recent years, PRDE has also received a significant amount of one-time federal funds, such as Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief funds and reconstruction funds from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
“PRDE has yet to develop an operational plan and budget that addresses how it will manage the impact of
expiring one-time federal funds, particularly since some of these funds currently support recurring expenses,” the oversight board said.
According to the March 22 letter, the total budget for recurring initiatives previously supported with one-time federal funds is $315 million, out of which $200 million has already been spent and $115 million has been encumbered. The letter notes further that the total amount requested for a liquidation extension across all federal programs, including the Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund, is $509 million. Of this amount, $129 million relates to timely drawdowns currently under USDE review.
The proposed commonwealth budget, which was submitted to the Legislative Assembly on May 12, includes $1.28 billion for payroll and $603.5 million for operating expenditures for the PRDE, totaling $1.88 billion.
The oversight board emphasized the necessity for the PRDE to submit a detailed budget plan.
“The plan must address the $199.9 million funding shortfall identified due to the expiration of one-time non-recurring federal funds and must specify how PRDE will fund recurring activities currently supported by these non-recurring federal funds, including identifying specific funding sources,” the board said.
Mexican navy ship crashes into Brooklyn Bridge, killing 2 crew members

Two crew members of a Mexican navy sailing ship died Saturday night when the ship drifted directly into the underside of the Brooklyn Bridge, smashing its masts and rigging.
There were 277 people on board the ship, the Cuauhtémoc, which was on a goodwill tour, and everyone is believed to be accounted for, a Fire Department official said.
Mayor Eric Adams said in a social media post after midnight that two people had died, and that the ship had lost power before the crash.
President Claudia Sheinbaum of Mexico said on social media that the two people who died were crew members on the Cuauhtémoc.

Mexican officials identified one of the dead as América Yamileth Sánchez Hernández, from the state of Veracruz. In a social media post, the state’s governor, Rocío Nahle, confirmed her death and sent condolences to her family. “Veracruz is with you,” she wrote.
At least 22 others were injured in the crash, including 11 who were in critical condition and nine in stable condition, the Mexican navy said in a statement.
The ship had been docked at Pier 17 in Manhattan, just below the Brooklyn Bridge.
On Saturday night, it was supposed to head south and sail out of New York Harbor, with a stop on the Brooklyn waterfront to refuel before heading onward to Iceland.
Instead, at about 8:30 p.m., the Cuauhtémoc was apparently heading in the wrong direction, having never intended to sail under the Brooklyn Bridge, said a spokesperson for the city’s Office of Emergency Management.
At the moment of collision, according to videos verified by Reuters, two people who appeared to have been on the topmost rung of the mast could be seen swinging forward violently. In the immediate aftermath, the videos showed, some people were hanging from the wreckage by ropes, and others inched along on their bellies toward the center.
In other videos posted on social media, a tugboat could be seen near the Cuauhtémoc, which appeared to be moving backward, stern first, when it crashed.
The vessel lurched but stayed upright as it came to a stop at Brooklyn Bridge Park, according to social media video and images from the scene. Its masts appeared to be badly damaged.
At a news conference Saturday, authorities said the pilot who was assigned to navigate the Cuauhtémoc out of the channel experienced “mechanical issues.” The National Transportation Safety Board will be doing a full investigation of the crash.
The commander of the Mexican navy, Adm. Raymundo Pedro Morales Ángeles, said in a statement Sunday that the uninjured cadets would continue their training and that the investigation into the crash would be carried out “with total transparency and responsibility.”
“We know that every sailing trip involves risks inherent to our seafaring vocation,” Morales Ángeles said.
Nick Corso, 23, was finishing dinner with friends at a restaurant nearby when they saw the ship heading toward them.
He thought at first that the vessel would clear the bridge, he said, but then “the top lights on the mast disappeared behind the bridge and I was like, oh, it’s not going to make it.”
When the top of a mast hit the underside of the bridge, he said, “you could hear it snap.”
At Pier 16, where the injured were brought, a large crowd gathered by the waterfront, and emergency vehicles with lights flashing filled South Street. Periodically, emergency workers wheeled victims with neck braces on toward ambulances and loaded them in on gurneys. Whenever a new survivor appeared, the crowd broke into cheers and applause and chanted: “Mex-i-co! Mex-i-co!”
One woman with her head bandaged was pushed out on a gurney. She was weeping. Beside her walked two companions in white slacks and striped black-and-white tops. One had her left arm in a sling. The other had her head wrapped in white gauze.
One man’s nose and uniform were smeared in dark blood and his chin was bandaged.
Not long after that, a man was wheeled out on a gur-
ney. He gave a thumbs-up when he passed the crowd.
Octavio Muniz, 44, said he had come from his home in Newark, New Jersey, to see the ship because he is from Mexico.
Muniz said he had watched in horror as the masts toppled. The crowd around him began to scream and cry.
“It was horrible,” he said at Pier 16. “It was so sad.”
After midnight, the vessel docked at Pier 36 behind a city sanitation depot, its broken masts visible from behind a row of police barricades blocking access to the slip.
A Mexican navy official who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to give interviews said Sunday that the Cuauhtémoc would go through an inspection process and that the ship’s fate would not be determined until a technical report was available.
The ship — a steel-hulled, three-masted barque, about 300 feet long — was built in Bilbao, Spain, in 1981 and then acquired by the Mexican government the following year to use as a training ship at its Heroic Naval Military School. Last year it won the Boston Teapot Trophy, an annual international award given to the sail training vessel that covers the greatest distance within five days.
At Pier 36 on Sunday morning, the regal ship, with its green trimmed hull and gilded masts, sat in the East River, a firm breeze rocking its disabled mast. Just before 10 a.m., a group of wounded sailors, including a man in an arm sling and another with his head bandaged in white gauze, emerged from the back of a white transport van to board once again. Bystanders tried to catch glimpses of the ship from behind police barricades.
The Mexican navy said in a statement that the Cuauhtémoc had set sail April 6 from Acapulco on a mission with the goal of “exalting the seafaring spirit, strengthening naval education, and carrying the Mexican people’s message of peace and goodwill to the seas and ports of the world.”
The vessel had planned to spend 254 days away making calls in New York; Kingston, Jamaica; Havana; Reykjavik, Iceland; Aberdeen, Scotland; Avilés, Spain; Bridgetown, Barbados; and London.
The tour stopped abruptly in New York, where authorities promised an investigation into the episode. Government infrastructure documents show the bridge has a navigational clearance of 127 feet. The Cuauhtémoc’s masts were roughly 160 feet tall.
After the crash, all lanes of the Brooklyn Bridge were briefly closed in both directions, the city’s emergency management notification system reported. Ydanis Rodriguez, the commissioner of the New York City Department of Transportation, said that the span was being inspected, but it appeared as if “there was not any major damage to the bridge.”

Severe weather continues to threaten the Midwest

Days after storms tore a path of destruction across the Midwest, severe weather is once again expected Sunday into Monday. The forecast is potentially for “all severe hazards,” including hail larger than golf balls, strong winds and tornadoes, according to the National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center.
The risk is spread across a broad slice of the middle of the country, but is focused over the south and central Great Plains and the northern High Plains on Sunday, and then the central Plains into Missouri on Monday.
Sunday afternoon in central Colorado, multiple reported tornadoes touched down in rural communities outside of Denver, said Greg Heavener, a forecaster for the weather service.
There were reports of damage but the extent of it was not immediately known, he said. The weather service will survey the damage Monday to confirm that tornadoes did strike.
A funnel cloud near Bennett, Colorado, was visible from Denver International Airport, which had a momentary ground delay because of the thunderstorms, according to a representative for the airport. The funnel cloud was about 15 miles south of the airport.
The Midwest and the Northeast are still recovering from a spate of deadly storms that generated several strong tornadoes Friday.
In Missouri and Kentucky alone, tornadoes killed at least 25 people, officials said. A rare dust storm swept across central Illinois and into Chicago.
“We’re probably one to two notches below what occurred,” Aaron Gleason, a meteorologist at the Storm Prediction Center, said of the weather he expected for Sunday and Monday. “There certainly could be strong tornadoes though, but not over as large of an area.”
The severe weather is hitting at a time when the weather service is facing staffing shortages after the Trump administration ordered cuts. Nearly 600 people have departed through layoffs and retirements.
A forecasting office in Jackson, Kentucky, which was directly in the line of Friday night’s tornadoes, is one of four that no longer has enough staff to operate at all times.
It would have been without an overnight forecaster, said Tom Fahy, the legislative director for the union that represents weather service employees. But after an “all hands on deck” scramble, he said, the office stayed open and was fully staffed, issuing 11 tornado warnings.
The three other forecasting offices are in
Sacramento; Hanford, California; and Goodland, Kansas. Four more, Fahy said, are days away from losing their overnight staffing: in Cheyenne, Wyoming; Marquette, Michigan; Pendleton, Oregon; and Fairbanks, Alaska.
On Sunday, there is an enhanced risk — level 3 of 5, in the weather service’s categories — for severe weather over the north of Texas, western Oklahoma, Kansas, southwestern Nebraska and the far northeast of Colorado.
“The biggest threat is the hail potential,” said Brian Hurley, a meteorologist with the Weather Prediction Center. “Golf- to baseball-size hail is anticipated.”
Wichita and Topeka in Kansas are two of the more heavily populated areas where thunderstorms could develop.
The area is also at risk for supercells, which are longer-lasting storms that generate large hail and stronger winds than typical thunderstorms. They can also spawn powerful tornadoes.
“The highest tornado threat is going to be from central and southern Kansas into Oklahoma,” Hurley said. The Storm Prediction Center highlighted these areas as a level 4 of 5 risk for severe weather on Sunday.
The severe threat
Sunday is a classic storm scenario across an area notorious for tornadoes, hail and wind.
“The forecast environment for the southern Plains predicts a volatile setup that has not been seen in five to 10 years,” said Sean Waugh, a research scientist with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Severe Storms Laboratory. “Potentially marking the return of the classic southern Plains outbreak event.”
A large area of the Plains and the Midwest has some risk for severe thunderstorms, with eastern Kansas and Oklahoma, a portion of North Texas, Missouri and the northwest corner of Arkansas in the bull’s-eye of an enhanced threat.
Damaging wind gusts of up to 70 mph and hail remain the main threats, with the potential for even larger hail than is expected Sunday.
The risk of tornadoes in the region will
also remain in place Monday.
There is expected to be some rain in the mix, too. Showers and thunderstorms could produce heavy rain over parts of the southern Plains and into the middle and lower Mississippi Valley on Sunday, and they are expected to be more focused over the central Plains into Missouri and Arkansas on Monday.
As of Sunday morning, these areas were under a “slight risk” warning, level 2 of 4, for flash flooding, according to the Weather Prediction Center’s excessive rainfall outlook. However, by Monday some of these areas could be upgraded to a level 3 risk because of saturated ground from recent storms.
“That is really going to be largely predicated on where some of the heavy rain falls ahead of that on Sunday,” Hurley said. “The best bet could be somewhere in Missouri and Arkansas.”

Suspect in Palm Springs bombing is said to have died in blast

A25-year-old man has been identified as the suspect in Saturday’s bombing outside a fertility clinic in Palm Springs, California. Authorities said Sunday that they believe the man died in the blast, which injured four other people and damaged buildings across the desert city’s downtown.
The suspect, Guy Edward Bartkus of Twentynine Palms, California, was believed to have targeted the clinic. Officials called the bombing an act of terrorism by a man they said had “nihilistic ideations.”
The explosion shattered windows in businesses and homes in Palm Springs, which is known as a sunny vacation destination, and it sent vehicle fragments flying hundreds of feet in the air and across several blocks, officials said.
“This is probably the largest bombing scene that we’ve had in Southern California,” said Akil Davis, assistant director of the FBI’s Los Angeles Field Office.
The four people who were hurt had minor injuries and have been released from the hospital, officials said Sunday, adding that there was no active threat of danger from the explosion.

had been implicated in the bombing. He described his son as having been a boy who liked tinkering with small model rockets, and said that at age 9, his son lit the family house on fire while playing with matches.
Bartkus, of Yucca Valley, California, added that as a teenager, his son would make “stink bombs” and “smoke bombs.”
“Nothing major, nothing like a ‘bomb’ bomb, but he’d build rockets, shoot them in the air,” Bartkus said.
He added that his son was impressionable, and had often allowed himself to be drawn in by friends who got him into trouble. Once, for example, a friend whose parents owned a wrecking yard talked his son into smashing cars there, he said.
Bartkus said he had taught his son to use firearms. “Guy was a pretty good shot,” he said. “If he told you he was going to hit the C on a Coke can, he’d hit the C on the Coke can. Whatever he put his mind to, he was pretty good.”
He said that when his son reached his late teens, he built computers and worked with special-needs children.
In an interview Sunday, Bartkus’ father,
“Palm Springs is safe, and we are open for business,” Naomi Soto, the mayor pro tem, said at a news briefing.

Biden is diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer

Former President Joe Biden was diagnosed Friday with an aggressive form of prostate cancer that has spread to his bones, his office said in a statement on Sunday.
The diagnosis came after Biden reported urinary symptoms, which led doctors to find a “small nodule” on his prostate. Biden’s cancer is “characterized by a Gleason score of 9 (Grade Group 5) with metastasis to the bone,” the statement said.
“While this represents a more aggressive form of the disease, the cancer appears to be hormonesensitive which allows for effective management,” according to the statement from Biden’s office, which was unsigned. “The president and his family are reviewing treatment options with his physicians.”
Biden, 82, left office in January as the oldestserving president in American history. Throughout his presidency, Biden faced questions about his age and his health, which ultimately led him to abandon his reelection campaign.
Since leaving office, Biden has largely kept a
low profile, spending most of his time in Delaware and commuting to Washington to meet with staff to plan his post-presidential life. After President Donald Trump passed the 100-day mark, and before the release of books about his presidency and the 2024 campaign, Biden participated in interviews to push back against claims that he suffered from mental decline.
“They are wrong,” Biden said during an interview on “The View.” “There’s nothing to sustain that.”
But the revelations have forced many top Democrats to grapple with their staunch support of Biden’s reelection campaign before a disastrous debate last June, in which he appeared disoriented and listless.
Adding fuel to the fire was the release this weekend of the audio from Biden’s 2023 interview with Robert Hur, the special counsel who investigated his handling of classified documents. Trump urges Walmart to absorb tariffs after retailer says it could raise prices

President Donald Trump scolded Walmart on Saturday after the retail giant warned that his tariffs would force it to raise prices, writing on social media that the discount chain could afford to absorb the costs of the new import taxes without passing them on to customers.
“Walmart should STOP trying to blame Tariffs as the reason for raising prices throughout the chain,” Trump wrote on Truth Social, his social media site. “Walmart made BILLIONS OF DOLLARS last year, far more than expected.”
He called on Walmart, the nation’s largest retailer, to “EAT THE TARIFFS” and keep prices down. “I’ll be watching, and so will your customers,” he wrote.
Trump’s attempt to bully Walmart into keeping its prices steady came as the president, who campaigned on a pledge to prevent inflation, is working to keep his tumultuous trade policy from driving up prices.
Walmart, which sells a broad selection of affordable goods to millions of Americans, said Thursday that Trump’s tariffs, even at their recently reduced levels, would soon force it to start raising prices.
“We will do our best to keep our prices as low as possible,” Walmart CEO Doug McMillon said on a call with analysts. But he cautioned that the company would not be able to “absorb all the pressure” imposed by the tariffs.
A spokesperson for Walmart, which is based in Arkansas and has more than 4,000 stores in the United States, repeated Saturday that the company would do its best to keep its prices from rising.
“We have always worked to keep our prices as low as possible and we won’t stop,” spokesperson Molly Blakeman said in a statement after Trump’s post. “We’ll keep prices as low as we can for as long as we can given the reality of small retail margins.”
The company, which says it counts 90% of Americans as its customers, has refrained from projecting profits for its current quarter because of the tariffs. It has said its sales climbed by more than 3%, to $112 billion, in the most recent quarter, which ended last month, and it has projected that its revenue would grow by 3% to 4% this year.
About one-third of Walmart’s products come from abroad, John David Rainey, the company’s chief financial officer, has said. A large share of the imported products comes from China and Mexico.
Many retailers have held off raising prices by stockpiling goods. Walmart is considered to be more insulated from the tariffs than some retailers because many of its groceries are sourced in the United States.
It is just one of several companies that have said they will be forced to pass on the costs of tariffs to consumers.
Ryan Sweet, the chief U.S. economist at the advisory firm Oxford Economics, said Saturday that it was no surprise that the tariffs would begin to drive prices up, adding that businesses were never “going to eat all” the costs. They must choose between lifting prices and laying off workers, he said.
“It was the iceberg that we knew we were going to hit at some point,” Sweet said, adding, “This is just the beginning.”
Grocery stores, in particular, will struggle to hold their prices given their “razor-thin” margins, he added.
After threatening an all-out trade war with China this year, Trump backed away last Monday, at least temporarily, from imposing the most crushing tariffs on China.
But much of the trade between China and the United States, the world’s two largest economies, had been brought to a halt because of the tariffs.
At one point, Trump imposed a 145% tariff on Chinese imports, prompting Beijing to respond with a 125% tariff on American goods. On Monday, the countries reached a 90-day agreement that lowered America’s tariff on Chinese products to 30% and China’s on American goods to 10%.
In recent days, Trump has sought a dialogue with President Xi Jinping of China to reach
a trade deal. The president said in an interview with Fox News aired Friday that he was open to visiting China to meet with the Chinese leader.
Trump has imposed a minimum 10% tariff on many countries around the globe. In April, he postponed for three months a suite of tariffs on dozens of countries that had rattled investors and driven fears of an impending recession. But he did not back off on the tariffs on China until last Monday.
Trump has complained for decades that other countries have ripped off the United States in trade, and he has offered various justifications for his tariffs, which he imposed on adversaries and allies.
By placing tariffs on Canada and Mexico, he said, he was trying to force the countries to prevent immigrants and drugs from entering the United States.
In the Fox News interview, Trump, who fashions himself a master dealmaker, said he had far-reaching ambitions for his global trade policy.
“I’m using trade to settle scores and to make peace,” Trump said.

US downgraded by Moody’s as Trump pushes costly tax cuts

The credit rating of the United States received a potentially costly downgrade last Friday, as the ratings firm Moody’s determined that the government’s rising debt levels stood to grow further if Republicans enact a package of new tax cuts.
The downgrade, to one notch below the highest triple-A rating, amounted to a repudiation of Washington, where President Donald Trump only hours earlier had pushed his party to adopt a legislative package that might add trillions of dollars to the nation’s fiscal imbalance.
The downgrade from Moody’s means that each of the three major credit rating agencies no longer gives the United States its best rating. Fitch downgraded the United States in 2023, citing fiscal concerns, and Standard & Poor’s downgraded the country in 2011.
The new rating decrease could send ripple effects through the economy if it prompts investors to demand higher payments on bonds, which in turn could raise consumers’ borrowing costs. So far, though, past downgrades have proved largely symbolic, as the U.S. government’s debt remains the bedrock of the global financial system.
Moody’s pointed to decades of gridlock and dysfunction in the nation’s capital. It found that Democrats and Republicans alike had failed to meaningfully curtail U.S. debt, which now towers above $36 trillion.
Nor had the U.S. government addressed myriad wellknown, and long-term, financial challenges, Moody’s said, especially the rising costs and persistent underfunding of programs like Social Security and Medicare.
While Moody’s described the U.S. financial system as stable, and found the dollar to be strong and reliable, it also acknowledged the vast policy uncertainty — and it obliquely referred to the ways in which political stability and constitutional order can be “tested at times.”
“Successive U.S. administrations and Congress have failed to agree on measures to reverse the trend of large annual fiscal deficits and growing interest costs,” the report from Moody’s said. “We do not believe that material multiyear reductions in mandatory spending and deficits will result from current fiscal proposals under consideration.”
Kush Desai, a White House spokesperson, sought to blame the Moody’s downgrade on the administration of former President Joe Biden.
“The Trump administration and Republicans are focused on fixing Biden’s mess by slashing the waste, fraud and abuse in government and passing the One, Big, Beautiful Bill to get our house back in order,” he said in a statement.
The prospect of much more government borrowing — when interest rates are already elevated — has made some bond investors nervous. So-called vigilantes in the bond market have been selling the government’s debt as the Republican tax package has wound its way through Congress, contributing to higher yields, which in turn translate to higher interest rates on consumer borrowing.
Moody’s specifically referred to the push to renew the expensive tax cuts adopted under Trump in 2017, a task that Republicans are now struggling with on Capitol Hill.
The party is trying to offset some of the roughly $3.8 trillion cost of lowering taxes with cuts to spending on health care, clean energy incentives and food stamps. But the scope and the approach of the package have divided Republican lawmakers, with hard-right conservatives demanding steeper cuts as some moderates caution against taking benefits away from too many Americans.
On Friday, some conservatives seized on the Moody’s downgrade to call for deeper spending cuts as part of their party’s imperiled domestic policy bill.
“Moody’s downgrade of America’s debt is a signal that we can wait no longer to address the debt crisis,” Rep. Andy Harris, R-Md., said in a post on social media. He added that he was “not supporting” the tax package without substantial changes.
Even with its existing spending cuts, the Republican package is expected to add significantly to the debt. The Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget estimated that the current version of the bill overall would cost $2.7 trillion over a decade, before counting additional borrowing costs.
That number could easily grow if Congress later extends measures including no tax on tips, which under this piece of legislation would last only four years.
The 10-year Treasury bond yield has risen roughly 0.3 percentage point this month to about 4.5%. The 30-year Treasury yield briefly crossed 5% this week; the last time it did that, during some of the worst tariff fears, Trump cited the bond market among reasons he pared back his tariff proposals.
It’s a sign that the government could end up paying a higher interest rate on its debt if it can’t soothe investors’ concerns over its mounting debt, a development that could snowball into a fullblown debt crisis for the world’s largest economy.
Moody’s announced the downgrade just before bond markets closed Friday, so investors will have to wait until Sunday to respond.
“We have warned that the bond vigilantes were teeing up for an event to move against Treasurys,” said Andrew Brenner, head of international fixed income at NatAlliance Securities. “This would qualify as a catalyst to move rates markets Sunday night.”
Still, the downgrade is unlikely to deter Republicans in their quest to slash taxes, even though party lawmakers previously griped about similar backslides in ratings. After previous downgrades, lawmakers in both parties did not raise taxes or cut spending enough to improve the country’s fiscal outlook, instead repeatedly passing legislation that, overall, reduced taxes and increased spending.
“Years of dysfunction, debt ceiling debacles and fiscal imprudence have brought us to this outcome,” said Joe Brusuelas, chief economist at accounting firm RSM. He warned that “anything financed in both the public and private sector will now be more expensive.”

Retailers set to give tariff view as US stock market roars back
Abatch of U.S. retail earnings reports in the coming week is set to shed more light on the economic fallout from the shifting tariff backdrop and test the stock market’s sharp rebound.
Results from retailers including Target (TGT.N), Home Depot (HD.N), and Lowe’s (LOW.N), arrive as investors have become less worried that U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariffs will send the economy into a recession, particularly following the recent U.S.-China trade truce between the world’s two largest economies.
But a warning from Walmart (WMT.N), on Thursday that the world’s largest retailer will have to start raising prices due to the high tariffs is putting other retailers in the spotlight, as investors watch how they are reacting to a trade backdrop that remains in flux.
“Retailers are going to be incredibly important, especially after what happened with Walmart’s announcement,” said Matthew Maley, chief market strategist at Miller Tabak.
Maley said it was notable that Walmart’s warning followed news of the U.S.-China truce, in which both sides are reducing their extra tariffs that had exceeded 100% for 90 days.
That Walmart is “still warning about the tariffs that will be put in place, even though they won’t be some of the most severe ones that everybody was worried about, obviously that raises some concerns,” Maley said.
The potential for tariffs to raise prices that could slow consumer spending or drive up inflation has worried investors, particularly since Trump’s April 2 “Liberation Day” announcement of sweeping levies on imports.
The retailers’ quarterly reports also will offer the latest glimpse into the health of consumer spending, which accounts for more than two-thirds of U.S. economic activity.
Data on Thursday showed U.S. retail sales growth slowed sharply in April as the boost from front-loading purchases ahead of tariffs faded, while consumer sentiment and other surveys have been weak.
“Sentiment is pretty sour,” said Jack Ablin, founding partner and chief investment officer at Cresset Capital. “But what we have to do is find out if households are really following through and pulling back on spending.”

Brexit tore the United Kingdom and the European Union apart. Now, President Donald Trump’s America is prodding them back together.
Five years after Britain formally exited the European Union, their leaders are moving cautiously toward a new era of cooperation. In an event that has been billed as a major reset of relations, the two sides will meet for a summit Monday in London. They are expected to announce a landmark defense and security agreement intended to bolster military security in Europe as the United States downgrades its commitment to the continent. Negotiators could also announce plans to relax some rules on food trade and to deepen energy cooperation.
Admittedly, reaching agreement on the shape of the new relationship has not been easy. Despite the high stakes on defense, more prosaic concerns, including fishing rights and a plan for youth travel between countries, have remained painful sticking points for negotiators.
But Monday’s event aims to underscore the commitment of the two partners to working together during an increasingly fraught geopolitical era. Hanging over the broad agenda will be one overarching theme: how to push ahead in a world where the United States is pulling back.
After decades of global leadership on defense and an embrace of free trade, the United States’ role in the world is being fundamentally reworked by the Trump administration. Trump has been pushing for Europe to shoulder more responsibility for defense. He has moved away from full-throated support for Ukraine, and has drawn rhetorically closer to Russia. And he has waged a trade war on the world, slapping diplomatic friends and foes alike with much higher tariffs.
While Britain has struck a limited trade pact with the United States, it is light on detail and not yet finalized. The European Union has made little obvious progress toward any agreement, and has unveiled plans to hit back at America if no deal is reached.
Against that backdrop, Monday’s meeting has taken on a heightened significance. Britain may have broken up with the
bloc because it wanted to go it alone economically, but the United States has reminded both partners that they share a set of daunting common problems. Cooperation will be key.
“The partnership is very important in this very turbulent time,” Kaja Kallas, the European Union’s chief diplomat, said last week. John Healey, the British defense secretary, signaled the same, telling Bloomberg that the “security challenges we face in Europe” required the two powers to “work together.” Britain’s prime minister, Keir Starmer, said in a statement that “in this time of great uncertainty and volatility the U.K. will not respond by turning inward, but by proudly taking our place on the world stage — strengthening our alliances.”
A new defense and security pact
EU ambassadors will convene Sunday to discuss final details before the summit. But a new defense partnership has long been expected.
The European Union has been rolling out programs to shore up its own military sector, galvanized by Russia’s aggression toward Ukraine, as well as evidence that Moscow is conducting a hybrid war of sabotage and espionage on European streets. Officials fear that Russia could threaten other European nations within the next decade, and they believe they need to be prepared to defend themselves should that happen.
But as the European Union’s efforts ramp up, major questions persist about how big of a role Britain — which, after all, chose to leave the bloc — should be allowed to play, particularly in a 150 billion euro ($167 billion) loan program to fund joint defense procurement.
The United Kingdom, and its defense sector, have been pushing for inclusion, but some European Union countries, notably France, want to limit British participation.
Another summit priority is economic cooperation, where Britain may have benefits to gain. The Brexit trade deal negotiated by Boris Johnson, who was the British prime minister at the time, is considered to have largely favored the European Union. And with growth flatlining, Starmer is hoping to reduce or remove some trade controls, including on exports of food and animal products.
Even so, “Britain is negotiating from a position of weakness because the trade and cooperation agreement works quite well for the EU,” noted Jill Rutter, a senior research fellow at U.K. in a Changing Europe, a think tank in London.
According to Starmer’s office, the agreement will help British producers “who face red tape and checks just to export to our nearest and biggest trading partner — or sometimes can’t export at all.”
Many experts believe that the rapprochement may be more symbolic than practical, however.
“It’s important for European security that Britain is linked to these European schemes,” said Anand Menon, a professor of European politics at King’s College London. But he added, “I don’t think, economically, it’s a game changer.”
In exchange for a deal allowing smoother trade in food products, Britain could agree to align its standards with Europe, change relevant laws when Brussels does and accept rulings from the European Court of Justice, the bloc’s top legal authority.
Those steps would create political risks for Starmer, who is already under political pressure at home from Nigel Farage, the veteran pro-Brexit campaigner who now leads a right-wing populist party, Reform UK.
Sticking points: Young people and … fish
Two of the most difficult areas of negotiation have involved a plan to allow young people to travel more easily between the European Union and Britain, and the future of fishing rights.
The two sides have been negotiating toward a “youth mobility scheme” that would offer visas to some young people to work, study or travel within each other’s borders. Britain, which is trying to reduce immigration, wants to limit the scope of any plan. There has also been friction over university fees, as Europe has pushed for Britain to offer European students the same fees that British students pay.
Access to fishing waters has been another major sticking point. The bloc wanted to extend — perhaps indefinitely, but in any case, for a long time — the access for its fishers to British waters that was decided upon after Brexit. That deal expires in 2026. Britain had been floating a shorterterm deal, perhaps four years.
Wouter Beke, a member of the European Parliament from Belgium — home to a substantial commercial fishing industry — sent the European Union executive body a letter urging it to include fishery rights as part of the deal. He said it was important that the countries come up with a solution that could provide fishers with certainty.
“Five years after the Brexit, this is the start of a new relationship,” he said. “The transition period has come to an end, and we have to see how we can create the future, together.”

Trump wants a deal with Iran,
but it may be weaker than his supporters demand

By every measure, President Donald Trump has made it clear that he wants “to do a deal” with Iran over its nuclear program and avoid a war, pushing aside Israeli proposals for a mutual military campaign instead.
“I want to make a deal with Iran,” Trump said in Saudi Arabia last week. “If I can make a deal with Iran, I’ll be very happy, if we’re going to make your region and the world a safer place.”
His trip to the Persian Gulf underlined his conviction. When Iran first agreed in 2015 to limit its nuclear program after years of negotiations with six world powers, the Persian Gulf states saw Iran as a dangerous adversary and worked to isolate it. But today, those same Persian Gulf leaders have been making their own rapprochements with Iran and want to avoid further instability and broader conflict in the Middle East, with the Israel-Hamas war continuing in the Gaza Strip.
At every stop of Trump’s trip, Arab leaders urged him to find a negotiated settlement with Iran. “The alternative is terrible” for them, said Ali Vaez, Iran director of the International Crisis Group. “Iran with a bomb or Iran bombed both have bad consequences for the region,” he added.
Reaching a deal with Iran will test the harder-line wing of Trump’s supporters in the Republican Party and whether they will fall in line with what would be a departure from their long-standing demands that Iran dismantle its
nuclear program. More than 200 congressional Republicans urged him in a letter this past week to stand firm with Iran.
The United States and its partners fear that a nuclear-armed Iran could set off an atomic arms race in the Middle East and contribute to instability there, sharply raising the stakes for any miscalculation among rivals.
Trump also brandishes a threat: Unless Iran comes to terms, the United States could attack.
Officials and analysts speak positively about progress in the talks, which are being led by Trump’s chief negotiator, Steve Witkoff. Trump said Friday that Witkoff had given Iran an outline for a deal and pressed Tehran to respond to it. “They know they have to move quickly,” Trump told reporters as he flew back to Washington from the Middle East. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi later denied that it received a “written proposal from the United States, whether directly or indirectly.”
Significant gaps remain between the two sides. Trump continues to insist that Iran must halt enrichment of uranium, which fuels nuclear power, as well as nuclear weapons. Israel and some of the president’s most fervent supporters are pushing for such an outcome. Iran continues to insist that it will not stop enriching uranium altogether and that it has the right to enrichment for civilian purposes under the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty.
Iranian officials have said recently that they would be willing to stop enrichment at the higher levels used for nuclear weapons, which exceed the requirements for civilian use, and scrap its large stockpile of highly enriched uranium — but not stop enriching entirely.

MrBeast’s tour of Maya ruins draws criticism and legal threats in Mexico

Mexican authorities threatened legal action last week over a video featuring YouTube sensation MrBeast at ancient Maya ruins, suggesting that a production company had violated an agreement for filming at the site.
The video, titled “I Explored 2,000 Year Old Ancient Temples,” was posted online last Saturday and had been viewed more than 60 million times by the end of the week.
“Everything you guys are seeing now the Mayans didn’t want us to see,” says a voice during the first moments of the 15-minute clip. “Nobody gets to go where we’re going.”
They were going to the Maya city of Chichén Itzá, an archaeological site on the Yucatán Peninsula with structures more than 1,000 years old, that is considered a wonder of the world and is visited every year by 2 million tourists.
Visitors are welcome to roam the ruins of city with a few conditions, including no climbing on the pyramids or staying past nightfall.
The video featuring MrBeast, whose real name is Jimmy Donaldson, shows him inside ruins, at an archaeological site at night and clambering up a pyramid, with a voice saying, “I’m climbing these stairs like a dog.” Toward the end of the video, he displays candy under his Feastables brand, which he calls “the only Mayan-approved snack on the planet.”
Not long after the video was posted online, it provoked outrage among some Mexicans, who noted that Mexico’s archaeological authority, the National Institute of Anthropology and History, or INAH, forbids some of what the video appeared to show.
The controversy drew even the attention of President Claudia Sheinbaum who, when asked about it, said Wednesday she wanted a report about what had happened.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Saturday reiterated the country’s commitment to negotiating and its unwillingness to cede the right to civilian enrichment. “We are negotiating, and we will negotiate — we are not after war, but we do not fear any threat,” he said during a speech broadcast by state television, according to The Associated Press.

if the country is assured that it can reliably get nuclear fuel on the global market. That might satisfy Trump, signaling that Iran had not rejected the idea of ending enrichment at some clear point in the future.
The sanctions that have battered Iran and that its leaders want so badly to be lifted could also be removed in phases, experts suggested. American corporate investment in Iran could be designed to enhance longer-term trust and provide a kind of deterrence against another war.
But Iran, stung by Trump’s unilateral withdrawal in 2018 from the earlier deal, will want guarantees that the United States will adhere to a new one. Iranian officials seem to believe, not without reason, that Trump would be better placed to guarantee a deal than a Democrat, especially because it would be bilateral rather than among multiple nations like the 2015 accord.
Iranians are likely to take some encouragement from Trump’s announcement this past week to lift sanctions against Syria’s new leaders despite their terrorist past. Although the president can lift some sanctions on his own, others require lawmakers’ approval.

The video filmed in Mexico resembled in some ways another video Donaldson posted this year, showing him visiting the pyramids of Giza. In that video, Donaldson said he had gained “unrestricted access to all the great pyramids of Egypt” and had gone into “places that are literally illegal to enter.” He also displays MrBeast branded toys that he says “are flying off the shelves.”
On Monday, INAH clarified that the video filmed in Mexico “clearly underwent extensive audiovisual postproduction and alludes to events that did not occur.” Those included people spending the night in the site, descending from a helicopter into the ruins and handling a mask that, the institute said, was actually a contemporary replica.
It was also not clear how much of the video was filmed at Chichén Itzá as opposed to other sites in the Yucatán Peninsula, where archaeologists have found many other ruins.
Donaldson also had defenders, however, including Gov. Layda Sansores of Campeche state, who thanked the influencer on social media for visiting. She said Wednesday that complaints about the video should be sent to her office, saying, “We assume responsibility for showing the world the cultural and natural wealth that defines us.”
The video set off a sprawling debate on Mexican social media about how it presented Mexico’s history, whether it presented a romanticized vision of archaeology and who was able to gain such privileged access to national heritage sites.
Nonetheless, INAH tried to put a positive spin on the controversy. “Despite the distorted information provided by the YouTuber,” it said, “the dissemination of this type of material may motivate young audiences in Mexico and around the world to learn about our ancestral cultures and visit archaeological sites.”
“That’s a precedent Iranians will be watching closely, to see if Trump can follow through with Congress,” said Suzanne Maloney, an Iran expert and director of the foreign policy program at the Brookings Institution.
Trump faces opposition to an Iran deal from within his own camp, particularly neoconservatives on Capitol Hill and elsewhere who cheered his withdrawal from the earlier deal. They have long demanded that Iran agree to complete denuclearization: a ban on all enrichment and the dismantling of its massive nuclear infrastructure.
“Trump is trying to manage expectations at home,” said Vali Nasr, an Iran expert and professor at the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies. Israel also wants Iran’s nuclear program destroyed.
But Trump really wants a deal, and “he is likely to settle for less,” Maloney said, most likely over the objections of some Republicans. “That’s why this is such an important test case for the efficacy of Trump’s foreign policy,” she added. “It will tell us something about the Republican Party and its future foreign policy.”
Trump only sees the world through deals

American presidents are supposed to have a grand theory of foreign policy — a proper doctrine, like Harry Truman and James Monroe and all their imitators — because how else would we categorize them?
Various doctrines have been attributed to Donald Trump over the years: Jacksonian, realist, nationalist, isolationist, unconventional dove, conventional hawk, anti-imperialist, neo-imperialist. (And of course Putinist, fascist, Manchurian candidate.) Clearly he is no kind of idealist, no starry-eyed Wilsonian; those labels can be ruled out. But is there a definite idea at the heart of his approach to foreign policy?
Only if you consider dealmaking an idea. Because it’s the quest for the handshake that guides Trumpian foreign policy on almost every front, often leaving rival theories of what the president is up to trampled in its wake.
These include theories expressed by Trump himself. Obviously “America First” nationalism is essential to his self-image. But it doesn’t necessarily predict his actual behavior. If our allies in the Middle East want to make a big, beautiful deal to build up their artificial intelligence capacities, Trump is ready to shake hands even if involves outsourcing some of the world’s most important emergent technology. If our rivals in Beijing want to come to the
negotiating table on tariffs, the nationalist dream of a total decoupling from China can be set aside.
Likewise, Trump styles himself an anti-interventionist; he gave a big speech in Saudi Arabia on that theme. But any neo-isolationist impulse can dissolve quickly when there’s a big incentive for dealmaking — as in, most recently, the India-Pakistan conflict. And Trump is happy to be hawkish when it suits him, ordering a bombing campaign against the Houthis, threatening North Korea in his first term, even making vague threats against the territory of a NATO ally because he covets Greenland. He sees military force as a useful tool when a rival isn’t yet willing to be a dealmaker, but he switches from hawk to dove as soon as those conditions change.
You can see this plainly with his Middle East strategy. In Trump’s first term, he mostly behaved like a traditional Republican hawk in his policy toward the Islamic Republic of Iran. But this conventional approach to the region, protective of Israeli interests and oriented toward regime change in Iran, has been discarded so far in Trump 2.0. Why? The simplest explanation is that Trump has decided that Iran’s government seems more eager to make peace with him, while Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is suddenly a hawkish obstacle to dealmaking.
Crucially, this doesn’t mean that Trump has suddenly embraced the Obama-era hope that peace with Iran might enable the United States to disentangle itself from its alliances with the Persian Gulf monarchies. They love dealmaking with America, so Trump is all-in for those relationships as well.
Nor does he seem guided at the moment by the worldview associated with some of his appointees, like Tulsi Gabbard, the director of national intelligence, that makes Sunni radicalism a particular bête noire. Instead, Trump happily met with the new president of Syria, long associated with a branch of al-Qaida, and promised to drop sanctions on his country. It was the fear of al-Qaida in power that helped justify Gabbard’s partial defenses of the Assad regime, but if an erstwhile Qaida terrorist wants to talk, Trump is ready to let bygones be bygones — because the deal’s the thing.
There’s a similar pattern with Russia and Ukraine. Trump’s warmth toward Russian President Vladimir Putin and bursts of hostility toward the Ukrainians are often interpreted as indicators of an ideological desire to align the United States with authoritarian regimes. But you’ll notice that Trump can be talked into a friendlier attitude toward Ukraine — he had armed the Ukrainians in his first term and been more critical of Putin as the government of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy acceded to a resource deal — whenever it appears that Moscow is intransigent and Kyiv is more accommodating. As much as the president tends to admire a certain kind of foreign strongman, that
admiration hits a limit when the prospects for dealmaking recede.
This doesn’t mean that Trump won’t talk himself into a bad bargain with Putin in the end. The problem with making deals your North Star is that it can be hard to distinguish between good ones and bad ones. (The other problem, for a president with a family business, is that what’s good for Trump Inc. may differ substantially from what’s good for America.)
But a key reason that many Americans preferred Trump to his rivals, both traditional Republican hawks and internationalist Democrats, is that the high-minded doctrines animating U.S. foreign policy for the last 20 years have often hastened our decline. And a dealmaker in chief is less likely than other presidents to find himself trapped by dogmatic beliefs in untenable positions, less likely to be led around by client states and less likely to run headlong into war.
That’s the case for the Trumpian corrective in U.S. foreign policy. Now let’s see what his deals look like in the end.

SAN JUAN – Con el objetivo de fortalecer la vigilancia sanitaria y mitigar los efectos negativos que los cerdos ferales provocan en las comunidades agrícolas y residenciales, el Departamento de Agricultura de Puerto Rico exhorta a la ciudadanía a seguir el protocolo establecido para reportar cualquier situación relacionada con esta especie invasora.
Toda persona que enfrente problemas con cerdos ferales debe enviar un mensaje al correo electrónico: serviciosveterinarios@agricultura.pr.gov, incluyendo la siguiente información:
* Nombre completo del solicitante
* Dirección física de la finca o lugar afectado
* Número de teléfono de contacto
* Descripción del lugar donde se encuentran los animales
* Cantidad estimada de cerdos ferales
* Coordenadas geográficas (GPS), en caso de tratarse
Además, los ciudadanos pueden comunicarse directamente con la oficina del USDA APHIS en Puerto Rico llamando al 866-536-7593, como parte de los esfuerzos de colaboración entre el gobierno estatal y federal para el control de esta especie.
“Los cerdos ferales representan una amenaza tanto para la salud animal como para la seguridad de nuestras comunidades rurales. Su presencia puede contribuir a
la propagación de enfermedades como la peste porcina africana y a la destrucción de cultivos. Por eso, hemos establecido un mecanismo claro para que los ciudadanos puedan canalizar sus reportes de forma efectiva”, indicó el Secretario de Agricultura, Josué E. Rivera.
Este esfuerzo se realiza en estrecha colaboración con el Departamento de Agricultura de los Estados Unidos (USDA), específicamente con la división de APHIS y el Servicio de Vida Silvestre, con quienes el Departamento mantiene un Memorando de Entendimiento (MOU) activo para la prevención y control de enfermedades en especies animales.
“Es vital que el público entienda que cada reporte cuenta. Con la información adecuada, nuestro equipo puede actuar con mayor eficacia y minimizar riesgos al sector agrícola y a la salud pública”, añadió el titular de Agricultura.

DRNA instala nuevos rótulos contra el voceteo en Icacos y Palomino

SAN JUAN – El secretario del Departamento de Recursos Naturales y Ambientales (DRNA), Waldemar Quiles Pérez, informó que personal de la Oficina de Navegación instalaron nueva rotulación en el cayo Icacos y la isla Palomino para informar sobre los parámetros de la Orden Administrativa 2025-02 la cual prohíbe la práctica de utilizar sistemas de sonido de alto volumen, el llamado ‘voceteo’, dentro de las áreas naturales protegidas bajo la jurisdicción de la agencia.
“Continuando con la política pública de siempre informar a la ciudadanía, personal de la Oficina de Navegación se trasladaron a las islas de Icacos y Palomino, parte de la Reserva Natural Arrecifes de la Cordillera, para instalar nueva rotulación dejando claro que se prohíbe la práctica del voceteo en esa zona. De igual forma hicimos en el área del balneario Escambrón, ubicado en San Juan”, dijo el secretario en declaraciones escritas.
“Reitero lo dicho anteriormente, el derecho a disfrutar de nuestras reservas naturales conlleva una responsabilidad con el medio ambiente y con los demás. Esta medida busca restablecer ese balance y garantizar la protección de nuestros recursos para las generaciones futuras”, añadió.
La orden establece la prohibición a la contaminación acústica generada por el ‘voceteo’, una práctica en la que vehículos y/o embarcaciones modifican sus sistemas de sonido para alcanzar niveles de ruido excesivos. Esta actividad ha sido objeto de numerosas quejas ciudadanas debido a su impacto en la tranquilidad y el equilibrio ecológico de estas áreas protegidas.
Los agentes del Cuerpo de Vigilantes son los responsables de velar por el cumplimiento de la orden, con la autoridad para intervenir y sancionar a quienes la incumplan.
Se impondrán multas administrativas de hasta 25 mil dólares por infracción, con la posibilidad de acumulación diaria en caso de reincidencia.

The ‘American Dirt’ backlash nearly stopped Jeanine Cummins from writing

By most measures, Jeanine Cummins’ 2020 novel “American Dirt” was a colossal success. A propulsive story about a Mexican mother and son who flee to the United States to escape a drug cartel, the novel sold for seven figures. It was an Oprah book club pick, won endorsements from bestselling authors like Stephen King and John Grisham, and became a runaway hit, selling more than 4 million copies in nearly 40 languages.
In other ways, though, “American Dirt” was a disaster. Cummins, who grew up in Maryland and is of Irish and Puerto Rican descent, was widely condemned for what some claimed was an insensitive and clichéd depiction of Mexican migrants. To critics of the book, she became the embodiment of the publishing industry’s racial blind spots, and the main character in a caustic debate about whether, and how, authors should write outside their own cultural experience.
Cummins thought her career was over. She wasn’t sure if she’d be able to write again, or if she even wanted to. But a few years ago, the idea for a new novel started to take shape — a story that grew out of the experience of having her cultural identity debated.
“In the aftermath of publishing ‘American Dirt,’ I was doing a lot of soul searching and self-reflection on how did I get here, how did this happen?” Cummins said during an interview at the public library near her home in Rockland County, New York. “So I started thinking a lot about my own identity, which I’d been thinking about my entire life privately, but had never had to grapple with publicly before.”
Those questions led Cummins to trace her roots in Puerto Rico, which fed into her new novel, “Speak to Me of Home.” The narrative follows a family’s turbulent history across several generations. Rafaela Acuña y Daubón, who is based on Cummins’ grandmother, moves from San Juan to Trinidad to work on a U.S. naval base as a secretary — a job she’s forced to take after her father’s business collapses and the family’s wealth evaporates. She meets a handsome Irish American man and marries him, despite his father’s bigoted objections to her background.
They move to St. Louis, where Rafaela feels isolated and presses their children to assimilate, hoping to protect them from the discrimination she faces. Rafaela’s daughter, Ruth, feels cut off from her Puerto Rican roots, until her own daughter, Daisy, moves to San Juan and discovers a momentous family secret.
Much of the narrative was mined from Cummins’ own family, she said. When her paternal grandmother Maria was still a teenager, her family lost its fortune and sent her to work on a naval base in Trinidad, where she met Cummins’ Irish American grandfather and eventually married him and moved to St. Louis.
While interviewing relatives to research the novel, Cummins learned that her grandfather’s family had objected to him marrying a Puerto Rican woman, and that Maria, who thought of herself as upper class, was shocked to encounter pervasive racism in Missouri. In incidents that Cummins repurposed in the novel, Maria was forbidden from using the ladies’ locker
room at a country club, and urged her children not to identify as Puerto Rican.
Cummins’ father, who died in 2016, grew up traveling between St. Louis and Puerto Rico, but he rarely brought up his Puerto Rican heritage, she said. Growing up, she knew more about her roots in Ireland, where she lived for two years after college, bartending and writing poetry. Her first two novels, “The Outside Boy” and “The Crooked Branch,” were works of historical fiction set in Ireland.
With “American Dirt,” which drew early comparisons to “The Grapes of Wrath,” Cummins seemed poised to break out. But pretty quickly, the hype was drowned out by those who argued the novel was full of harmful stereotypes about Mexico, depicting it as a violent, corrupt country overrun by drug cartels.
Others seized on Cummins’ author’s note, in which she said that she hoped to counter misconceptions about migrants as a “helpless, impoverished, faceless brown mass,” and that she wished that someone “slightly browner than me” had written the novel.
When Winfrey announced “American Dirt” as her book club selection, the backlash was swift. A group of 141 authors signed an open letter asking Winfrey to drop the novel, which they said was “exploitative, oversimplified, and ill-informed, too often erring on the side of trauma fetishization.”
Winfrey decided to highlight the debate. Instead of the usual format, Cummins was brought on to discuss the book alongside three Latina writers — Julissa Arce, Esther Cepeda and Reyna Grande — who were critical of the novel.
“I wasn’t able to respond in that moment — there was
nothing I could say,” Cummins said. “I wasn’t able to defend myself.”
She recalls feeling like a magnet for people’s pent-up frustrations. “I was sort of the lit match to dry kindling,” she said. “It was incredibly disconcerting that I was the person who became the example of the white supremacy problem in publishing, as a part Puerto Rican woman from a working-class background.”
She was particularly stung when people who had initially supported the book withdrew their endorsements, “in ways that did not feel genuine, that were entire self-serving and dare I say cowardly,” she said.
In hindsight, Cummins acknowledges some positive outcomes from the controversy, which brought attention to how the book business often fails to promote works by writers of color, while heaping money and acclaim on white authors.
“The conversation that did happen around ‘American Dirt’ was long overdue, though I would have preferred not have been in the crosshairs of it,” Cummins said.
Cummins said she does not regret writing “American Dirt,” though she wishes the debate about the novel had centered on the humanitarian crisis at the border. Still, she was unable to write for a year after the controversy. Once she began, she was terrified of the scrutiny she might face and had a couple of false starts, she said.
“She was trying to find her sea legs,” said novelist and bookseller Ann Patchett, who was among the prominent fans of “American Dirt” and was steadfast in her praise of the book as the backlash built.
When she read “Speak to Me of Home,” Patchett said she was struck by how Cummins navigated questions about cultural identity and belonging, some of the same issues that became a flashpoint with “American Dirt.”
“She found a way to make art out of her experience, but she made it into something loving instead of something full of rage,” she said.
“Speak to Me of Home” has drawn mixed prepublication reviews. Publishers Weekly called it “engrossing”; Kirkus Reviews said Cummins was “more nuanced” in her treatment of issues like colorism and class, but argued that she “still indulges in tired tropes.” Holt released the novel on May 13.
The reaction Cummins cared about the most was from her own extended family and her relatives in Puerto Rico, she said.
“Because this was dicey and a lot of it comes from our family history and it covers a lot of themes that we don’t talk about in my family, I wasn’t sure how they were going to feel about it,” she said.
Cummins sent copies to her father’s siblings and cousins and their children, and recently the family gathered over Zoom to discuss the book. To her relief, their reactions were positive, and the conversation later turned to her cousin Carolina Quixano’s recent appearance on “The Bachelor.”
Cummins is now restarting her public life as an author, after a five-year hiatus, and is preparing for an eight-city book tour. While she doesn’t relish rehashing the debate over “American Dirt,” she finally feels able to talk about it.
“It’s not my favorite subject,” she said. “But I’m not afraid of it.”

Summer travel slump? Amid uncertainty, the US brand ‘has taken a beating.’

It was supposed to be a big year for travel in the United States, with airlines and hotel companies projecting strong growth. But with the summer travel season about to start, it has instead become a year of uncertainty.
Canadian travel to the United States is down for a third consecutive month, falling 15.2% compared with April of last year. Airlines have reduced fares in response to softening demand. U.S.-based hotel chains Marriott, Hyatt and Hilton say they are experiencing slower growth, and all three have lowered their revenue outlook. Airbnb expects growth to ease in the second quarter, and Expedia downgraded its expectations for booking and revenue growth.
“Unpopular policy decisions, whether it be related to Ukraine or trade, are having an effect and the brand of the country has taken a beating,” said Adam Sacks, president of research firm Tourism Economics, which projects a 9.4% decline in international arrivals to the United States for 2025. At the start of the year, the company was expecting a 9% increase.

can travelers are cutting back over fears of a recession and job insecurity.
“U.S. demand was soft, driven by declining consumer sentiment, and we saw pressure on key inbound U.S. corridors,” Expedia CEO Ariane Gorin told investors this month.
Bank of America’s credit card and debit card spending also shows softening in travel spending across all income groups. With fewer Americans planning expensive trips abroad, domestic travel, which is generally cheaper, is up 3 percentage points. According to the bank’s Summer Travel and Entertainment Outlook report published this week, 70% of Americans planning trips are opting for domestic travel.
On the international front, arrivals from most of the 20 top tourist-generating countries such as Britain and Germany actually rebounded after a steep drop in March, with a 0.4% year-over-year increase for April, according to U.S. Department of Commerce data. The decline in March can be attributed, in part, to the fact that the Easter holidays, which are particularly popular in Western Europe, fell later this year.
Still, the number of visitors from France, normally a reliable source of tourists, remained lower than expected in April, with arrivals down 12.2%. (The
data did not include arrivals from Canada, the top source of travelers to the United States.)
Sacks anticipates more pain. “We believe that pure leisure travel will be the most reactive, and we’re not quite in the peak window yet,” he said. “I expect as we get into May, June and July, the effects will be more pronounced.”
Monique Dubas, 35, an engineer from Paris, canceled a June trip to New York to show solidarity with a French scientist who was denied entry into the United States in March after immigration officers searched his phone and found messages deemed to be critical of President Donald Trump, according to French authorities. (The Department of Homeland Security later said the decision had nothing to do with Trump. )
“This is wrong and should not be accepted,” Dubas said. After paying expensive cancellation fees, she changed her destination to Mexico. “I love America, but there are many more inviting places to go right now,” she said.
Canadian travelers are, by far, the biggest loss. Arrivals have declined significantly for a third consecutive month as Canadians continue to boycott the United States in reaction to tariffs and Trump’s comments on annexation. In April, the number of Canadians returning from the United States by car fell 35.2% compared with the same month in 2024, and returning Canadian airline passengers fell by 19.9%, according to the latest data published by the government office Statistics Canada.
A $12.5 billion loss
The tourism industry projects a drop in international visitors that will cost the United States $12.5 billion in travel spending this year, falling to less than $169 billion from $181 billion in 2024. That’s a 22.5% decline from the prepandemic peak reached in 2019 and sets the United States apart as the only country among the 184 analyzed that is forecast to see an international visitor drop in 2025.
“People are worried that their devices are going to be searched and that there is a risk of deportation before you even get into the country,” said Geoff Freeman, CEO of the U.S. Travel Association. “What is most concerning is that to this date, we have not done anything to counter that

fear and send a message that we want travelers to come.”
Freeman stressed the urgent need for a coordinated marketing strategy to shape more favorable perceptions of America before the current ones become ingrained. Pointing to upcoming events — the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence next year, the 2026 FIFA World Cup and the 2028 Summer Olympics — he said the government needs to set a goal for how many of the world’s travelers it wants to attract and then develop a way to achieve that aim.
“In the absence of doing that, we are just responding to this problem here, this problem there and losing billions upon billions of dollars,” he said.
The National Travel and Tourism Office, part of the U.S. government’s International Trade Administration, did not respond to multiple requests for comment.
Brand USA, a nonprofit destination marketing organization partially funded by the federal government, was recently shaken by the abrupt dismissal of five board members by the Trump administration. It said it is preparing “a bold global tourism campaign” that will be launched in June to “showcase the best of the USA
from small, rural communities to iconic destinations” in advance of major events such as the FIFA World Cup.
“Whether visiting for sporting events or memorable holidays, the USA remains the world’s most aspirational destination for vacationers,” said Chris Heywood, the organization’s senior vice president of public relations.
Looking for strategies
The tourism agencies for popular destinations such as New York and California updated their projections this month to reflect an anticipated decline in visitors. New York City Tourism and Conventions entered the year with optimism, forecasting 67.6 million international and domestic visitors, but that number has fallen to 64.1 million, a 350,000 decline from last year. Visit California expects overall visitation to drop by 1%, to 268 million.
Both agencies have developed new campaigns to combat negative sentiment. Visit California has partnered with Expedia in its “California loves Canada” campaign, offering Canadians up to 25% off hotels, activities and attractions. Similarly, New York City Tourism and Conventions is running a campaign abroad called “With
Love + Liberty, New York City.”
Jessica Walker, president and CEO of the Manhattan Chamber of Commerce, said local businesses are being buoyed by an increase in domestic tourism. However, there are concerns about the expected international shortfall, especially as foreign travelers tend to stay longer and spend more.
“A lot of businesses are just getting over COVID and the debt they had to pay down,” Walker said.
Airlines: ‘Growth has largely stalled’
On the airline front, both international and domestic fares have been falling, indicating weaker demand. Ticket prices fell 5.3% in March compared with the previous year, according to the U.S. consumer price index. Looking ahead to the summer, the average domestic ticket is down 7%, according to the Airlines Reporting Corporation, whose data covers about two-thirds of global sales.
While domestic air travel is up 4% this year, fewer Americans have made international summer plans; outbound travel to the top 10 international destinations, which include Mexico and Canada, is down 3% compared with last year, while all international tickets are down 6%, ac-
cording to ARC.
The European Travel Commission, which represents tourism organizations across the continent, said it is bracing for a dip in American travelers.
Major U.S. airlines, including Alaska, Southwest, Delta and JetBlue, have recently pulled their 2025 forecasts, citing economic uncertainty. United is lowering international and domestic capacity and axing routes, but said the ebb in demand has partly been offset by the strength of premium cabin bookings, which have continued to rise.
Luxury travel remains strong
Indeed, the one segment that has so far managed to withstand the volatile economy is luxury travel. Virtuoso, a network of upscale travel agencies, said summer demand is up 23%. “The U.S. is our No. 1 destination, and domestic travel is still holding really strong,” said Misty Belles, the company’s vice president of global public relations.
Looking beyond the summer, Sacks said the United States remains a highly desirable destination, with “unique experiences and attractions that will remain attractive for long after this presidency is over.”

Formula One visits 24 locations annually across 21 countries, and its equipment needs to be present. It is a gargantuan operation.
“I’ve been here 39 years. We used to do 16 races, five international, now it’s 15 international and nine Europeans,” Paul Fowler, vice president of motorsport product for DHL Motorsport, Formula One’s longtime logistics partner, said in an interview. “It was two DC-10s in the day, the 747 freighter just about existed — now it’s up to nine flights per race — and the calendar was spread. Now you’re doing checkered flag down on a Sunday; Monday we’re at the next race.”
Equipment is split among air, sea and road freight. For European events, most equipment travels by road, and for the remainder — colloquially called flyaways — essential items are flown on up to nine 777 jets, including the cars. Nonessential equipment is shipped by sea. There are extreme examples, like knives and forks.
“Cutlery is sponsor-specific for teams, so you can’t just take whatever, and you can’t locally source it,” Fowler said.
The grueling schedule means every movement is carefully coordinated.
“The first plane takes 30 pallets, so each team gets three pallets as their priority freight,” said Simon Price, event manager for DHL Motorsport. “That will normally go just over 12 hours after the flag, but it depends where we’re going.

have an 18-hour flight, but there’s also a deficit of 11 hours [time zone change], so we lose over 24 hours, just a liftoff, and that’s before we set up — and everything still has to be done. The schedules are so tight, this industry and what we’re working in now, everything is pushing the boundaries of what’s possible — and that also extends to logistics.”
The logistics team must monitor costs and consider restrictions on Russia’s airspace. Avoiding the Suez Canal because of military action there has lengthened journeys. And the team must be prepared if seaports are congested. Smooth relationships and experience with customs personnel are also essential, especially in countries where sign-offs take longer.
“We do have a Plan A, B and C, and we do joke that we never want to get to P, Q and R, which is Panic, Quit and Run!” Fowler said.
Such contingencies mean Formula One has rarely had any problems, even with issues in recent years, including a storm in the Gulf of Mexico, two planes having technical problems between Grands Prix in Australia and China, and the collapse of part of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore affecting shipping lanes.
“Teams will never be without anything,” Price said. “Our deadlines are not like commercial deadlines where if you can’t deliver it on Friday you could deliver it on Monday morning — that doesn’t work here because the race is on Sunday. It has to be here.”
Price recalled an engine manufacturer requiring the urgent deployment of a repaired component to the track during a race weekend.
“This was on Friday afternoon; we were in Italy,”

Price said. “We booked a flight for one of our guys. He flew to the U.K., had a van to take him to the factory. There were no flights available to return, so we had to get a private jet, but the only one we could get was in Nice,” in France.
They flew the jet to Luton Airport, near London, but “Luton takeoff rights wouldn’t allow the plane to take off overnight, so we had to move the plane to Birmingham.” He said they then flew to the Malpensa airport near Milan, with a man carrying the part in a suitcase.
“We had a car waiting for him there and took him straight to the circuit,” Price said. “That’s Friday 4 p.m. to Saturday lunchtime.”
The Imola track in Italy this weekend hosts the first European round, the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix, so road transport takes over. But there are events across the next two weekends, in Monaco and Spain, bringing further complications. Three Grands Prix in successive weekends used to be rare, but they are now commonplace.
“In the old days we could never do back-to-backs, as everything was built around single events,” Ian Stone, Formula One’s director of transport logistics and cargo, said in an interview. “Now we have two sets of key infrastructure: the ETC [Event Technology Center], cabling, fiber optic network, the pit lane garage network, and we leapfrog with an A and B team.”
“For Imola, one team went out last Thursday [May 8], starting the setup. They’ll stay until after the race, while the other team will be in Monaco, then the Imola team will go straight to Spain. There’s some expensive kit that you don’t have multiple versions of, so we have priority trucks that will be on the road by midnight to get there Monday lunchtime. Our deadline is to be ready to do a full system test with the FIA at 2 p.m. on Thursday, and that’s an immovable object.”
Despite the quantity of equipment — which Formula One estimates is 1,200 tons per race and likely to grow in 2026 with Cadillac’s arrival — and the expanded schedule, championship officials say they are managing to arrange logistics in line with their sustainability and Net Zero 2030 ambitions. Instead of the trucks burning gasoline or standard diesel fuel, they are using sustainable aviation fuel, or SAF, and biofuels.
“When you look at the biofuels in our trucks, which power our European season, that’s over an 80% reduction in our carbon footprint compared to standard fuel,” said Ellen Jones, Formula One’s head of environment, social and governance. SAF, Jones said, is a minimum 80% reduction compared with Jet-A fuel. “For sustainability, those are massive numbers,” she said.
The nature of the sport means the wheels never stop turning.
“There’s a lot of work going on for 2026 because of new cars and regulations,” Stone said.
“There’s more testing at the start of the year; a test is still an event for us and the teams, so we have to plan around those,” he continued, referring to the sport’s expanded preseason testing. “You have most of the arrangements for the first half of the year done by the end of the preceding year, now we’re starting to work in terms of planning for ’26.”
