PDP union leader defends resident commissioner against Santini barbs

Popular Democratic Party’s (PDP) Public Servants Organization President Juan Vega Quiñones reacted on Sunday to the most recent statements by New Progressive Party (NPP) Secretary General Jorge Santini criticizing Resident Commissioner Pablo José Hernández Rivera’s job performance.

“Santini is stuck in the political dynamics of the past; he appears disoriented in his statements,” Vega Quiñones said.

“What bothers some sectors of the NPP leadership is that Pablo José Hernández Rivera is the elected official who received the most votes in the last elections and is active both in Puerto Rico and in the federal capital,” the PDP official asserted. “And not to mention the effectiveness of his communication, both on social media and in the media.”

“His presence in Puerto Rico is an essential part of his congressional work, and he also holds regular meetings with both Democratic and Republican legislators to promote bills related to health, energy, and economic development,” Vega Quiñones added. “As recently as this past week, Pablo José led a group of 21 Democratic legislators in urging the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) to reverse its decision to close Rural Development offices in Puerto Rico and other jurisdictions.”

Santini, a former mayor of San Juan, harshly criticized

Hernández Rivera in a recent press release on the grounds that he has spent more than 70% of his time in Puerto Rico, “playing politics instead of fulfilling his main duty: representing the people before the United States Congress.”

“He was elected to work for our people in Washington, not to be on the island for political activities,” Santini said. “He doesn’t even have a balance sheet. His absence in the federal capital and his lack of results are unacceptable.”

The NPP secretary general went on to accuse the resident commissioner of prioritizing his visibility on local social media over achieving concrete actions at the federal level.

“He has turned his position into a constant tour,” Santini said. “He has written more content for social media than for a congressional measure. There are no new proposals, no alliances, and what there is is a lot of repetition and little action.”

Regarding the public issue of the Trump administration’s aggressive policies toward immigrants with undefined legal status, Vega Quiñones noted that Hernández and 27 members of Congress sent a letter to Gov. Jenniffer González Colón last Thursday to express their serious concern about her administration’s decision to voluntarily share information with immigration authorities on such immigrants who have provisional driver’s licenses in Puerto Rico.

“But it seems Santini doesn’t read the press and prefers to make senseless attacks,” the union leader said.

Governor: Nuclear plants won’t be part of island’s energy portfolio

Gov. Jenniffer González Colón insisted late last week on her rejection of the development of nuclear energy in Puerto Rico and announced that she will not invest time or resources in the matter.

“At this time, we are not focusing on a single technology. The public policy of the Government of Puerto Rico has shifted toward diversification. So, we are open to all types of technology except nuclear energy,” the governor said Friday in response to questions from the press. “And that is part of my public policy. I know that this energy has evolved a lot, that it is much more economical, that it is much more efficient, but, honestly, I believe that Puerto Rico doesn’t have the environment to consider nuclear energy. Therefore, I am not going to allocate time or resources to evaluate this.”

However, González Colón did not rule out evaluating applications to build liquefied gas interconnections if private electric power operators so request.

“They are not being requested at this time, but I don’t rule out that the energy czar, at some point, will believe that we need more generation than what is currently being

processed and will be open to receiving proposals …” she said. “We are not proposing those interconnections at this time. It should be noted that these almost always come from the same companies that are making energy proposals. And right now, we don’t have them.”

The governor’s remarks came in response to statements by Genera PR spokesman Iván Báez and energy czar Josué Colón Ortíz that converting generation plants to natural gas will require the construction of interconnections (gas pipelines) to transport the fuel from a barge to the plant.

Former House speaker, PDP leader Jarabo dies at 85

Veteran Popular Democratic Party (PDP) leader, former House Speaker, and political analyst José Ronaldo “Ronny” Jarabo Álvarez passed away Sunday after several weeks in the hospital. He was 85 years old.

“It is with deep sorrow that I receive the news of the passing of Ronny Jarabo, former Speaker of the Puerto Rico House of Representatives,” PDP President Pablo José Hernández Rivera said in a written statement Sunday. “Ronny was a brilliant leader, an exceptional orator, and a committed public servant. My deepest condolences to his family and friends. May he rest in peace.”

House Speaker Carlos “Johnny” Méndez Nuñez said in a written statement: “The members of the Puerto Rico House of Representatives, the legislative body closest to the people and which he always loved, join together in expressing our condolences to the family of ‘Ronny’ Jarabo. Our prayers are with his wife, Madeline, his family, and friends during this difficult time.”

“During the next few hours, I will be communicating with his wife to coordinate the events associated with the funeral service at the Capitol,” he added.

Separately, the Puerto Rico Senate approved Senate Resolution 249 to honor Jarabo’s legacy.

Senate President Thomas Rivera Schatz offered words of praise for the deceased, who had been hospitalized reportedly due to a brain tumor.

“Good morning, Puerto Rico. A great friend, a political leader like few others, a statesman, but above all, a good Puerto Rican, has passed away,” the Senate leader said on his social media account. “A shrewd adversary, a fierce opponent, a valuable advisor, elegant in his dress, his manner of dealing with others, and his manner of speaking. An intellectual and upright man. José Ronaldo Jarabo, ‘Ronny,’ brother, friend, rest in peace!”

Meanwhile, Jorge “Georgie” González Otero, president of the Puerto Rico Mayors Association, stated, “Rony not only presided over the House of Representatives with wisdom and firmness, but also left an indelible mark as a brilliant orator, a passionate intellectual, and a public servant committed to the country. His legacy lives on in every well-spoken word, in every debate where reason and justice intersected, and in the memory of those of us who had the privilege of listening to him and learning from him. Today, Puerto Rico loses one of its greats. From every corner of our island, the mayors join in the mourning of his family and all those who loved and admired him. Thank you, for so much. May your voice continue to resonate in the halls of history. May he rest in peace.”

Jarabo was a PDP parliamentarian for 20 years, between 1973 and 1992. Between 1981 and 1984, he was the party’s majority leader in the House.

His career ended after a scandal in which he was accused of domestic violence. In 1992, reports at the time said Jarabo went to the apartment of former beauty queen Elizabeth Zayas

Senate President Thomas Rivera Schatz, left, paid tribute to former Speaker of the Puerto Rico House of Representatives José Ronaldo “Ronny” Jarabo Álvarez, who died on Sunday at age 85, as a “shrewd adversary, a fierce opponent, a valuable advisor, elegant in his dress, his manner of dealing with others, and his manner of speaking. and her husband, Frank Kolodziej, to confront the latter on an alleged extramarital relationship he was having with Teresa Bengoa, then Jarabo’s wife. Jarabo was accused on several charges, including assault.

He was acquitted by the courts of four criminal charges that were brought after the altercation. The case reportedly cost Jarabo his reelection in the PDP primaries, ending his career as a legislator.

For many years, he continued to work as an adviser at the Legislature. He was expelled from the PDP in the past election for supporting New Progressive Party incumbent candidate Miguel Romero Lugo for mayor of San Juan. As previously reported by the Star, Hernández recently rescinded the expulsion.

The Puerto Rico Energy Bureau (PREB) has made the approval of the contract with Power Expectations, the firm hired to provide some 800 megawatts of temporary energy to stabilize the power grid, contingent upon certain conditions.

In early June, Energy Czar Josué Colón Ortiz announced that Power Expectations had been chosen for the task. Although another company, Javelin Global Commodities, was also considered for the contract, the government decided not to proceed with it after it refused to keep energy costs below 25 cents per kilowatt-hour.

On June 20, the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority (PREPA) submitted a motion to the PREB requesting urgent approval for the necessary temporary emergency generation. In

response, the PREB stated that it needed certain clarifications before issuing a ruling.

The PREB then ordered PREPA to submit written explanations by July 1, detailing why the draft contract proposes an

initial term of two years, with the possibility of extending it for two additional one-year periods, in contrast to the original 18-month timeframe proposed by Genera PR, the private operator of PREPA’s legacy power-generation fleet.

While the PREB may choose to limit any approval to 18 months or accept other contract lengths, it requires comparative data, especially if pricing varies. The PREB noted in its evaluation that the submitted information indicated a base price for years 1 and 2, followed by a decrease in years 3 and 4.

“Please indicate if the Public-Private Partnership Authority or other bidders considered extending the timeframe,” the PREB requested. “If so, submit any revised pricing proposals for the record.”

Additionally, the PREB asked PREPA to provide information and proposals from all qualified bidders during the negotiation process.

they deserve.”

Gov. Jenniffer González Colón and Cataño Mayor Julio Alicea Vasallo announced on Sunday the 249th celebration of the Independence of the United States this July 4th. The event will be the central government’s official celebration of the Fourth of July.

“I appreciate the trust that Jenniffer González Colón’s administration

has placed in our municipality,” Alicea Vasallo said in a written statement. “In Cataño, we have coordinated all logistical aspects, from security -- with electronic surveillance, the Municipal and State Police, and our Emergency Management Office -- to access control to the town, to ensure a safe and organized event. We have distinguished ourselves by successfully hosting large-scale events, and this July 4th will be no exception. Our commitment is that the people commemorate this date with the pride and dignity

Activities will begin at 3 p.m. with a formal ceremony on the Edwin Rivera Sierra Stage at the seafront. A civic-military parade will be held at 4 p.m., and beginning at 5 p.m. the public will be able to enjoy musical performances hosted by Jaime Mayol. The live music lineup includes:

• 5 pm – Mariano Cotto and His Trovadores Show

Resident commissioner, congressional colleagues urge GSA to keep USDA offices open

Following recent reports that the General Services Administration (GSA) may proceed with the closure of U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Rural Development offices across the United States, including Puerto Rico, Resident Commissioner Pablo José Hernández Rivera and 20 members of Congress urged the agency to reverse course and preserve the mission-critical facilities.

“These offices are the federal government’s front door in our rural communities,” Hernández said in a statement. “They support farmers, small businesses, families, and municipalities. Closing them would be a step backward -- at the worst possible time.”

The congressional action directed to Acting GSA Administrator Stephen Ehikian comes in response to a USDA update confirming that 43 of the 49 offices slated for lease termination are considered “mission critical” by the department. However, GSA has yet to rescind the terminations, leaving local offices -- including those in Puerto Rico -- at risk.

The action builds on prior efforts by Hernández, who signed a letter in March with 10 colleagues opposing the closures and demanding USDA clarify the impact on rural communities. That effort prompted the USDA’s May 16

response, which acknowledged the importance of the facilities.

“This is not the first time we’ve had to raise our voice,” Hernández said. “In March, we made sure USDA understood the role these offices play in Puerto Rico. They listened. Now it’s time for GSA to do the same.”

“Our rural communities are not a footnote -- they are central to the economic and social fabric of Puerto Rico,” Hernández said. “We will fight to ensure they are not abandoned.”

The resident commissioner’s effort was joined by U.S. Reps. Raúl Ruiz (D-Calif.), Mike Thompson (D-Calif.), Eugene Simon Vindman (D-Va.), John W. Mannion (D-N.Y.), Ritchie Torres (D-N.Y.), Cleo Fields (D-La.), Shomari Figures (D-Ala.), Sanford D. Bishop Jr. (DGa.), Adriano Espaillat (D-N.Y.), Terri A. Sewell (D-Ala.), Bennie G. Thompson (D-Miss.), Nikki Budzinski (D-Ill.), Becca Balint (D-Vt.), Sarah McBride (D-Del.), Herbert C. Conaway (D-N.J.), Stacey E. Plaskett (D-V.I.), Nellie Pou (D-N.J.), Nydia M. Velázquez (D-N.Y.), Emanuel Cleaver II (D-Mo.) and Eric Sorensen (D-Ill.).

Professional organization: Senate bill will exacerbate oversaturated real estate market

Miguel Mercado Ruiz, the president of the Board of Realtors, Salespeople, and Real Estate Companies, has urged Gov. Jenniffer González Colón not to sign Senate Bill (SB) 6, arguing that it would exacerbate the already oversaturated real estate market in Puerto Rico.

The legislation, authored by Senate President Thomas Rivera Schatz, is titled the Universal Recognition of Occupational and Professional Licenses in Puerto Rico Act. It aims to create a universal law that would recognize professional licenses from other jurisdictions within the United States, enabling licensed professionals from those areas to practice in Puerto Rico without undergoing additional evaluation processes. The House passed the bill last week.

“License reciprocity and the renewal process are entirely different issues, and this bill is conflating them,” Mercado Ruiz said in a message to real estate brokers. “There is no universal real estate license in any state in the United States. What exists in some states is reciprocity, and that applies only when the laws are very similar, mainly for consumer protection. The most concerning issue is that Puerto Rico already has an excess of licenses. The current real estate market cannot support more professionals. This law would only add pressure to an already overburdened sector. Furthermore, it could attract undue interest from large economic entities wanting to operate in Puerto Rico.”

The U.S. National Association of Realtors said the real estate industry in 2025 in the mainland United States is heavily oversaturated, with nearly two million licensed real estate agents competing for fewer home sales and tighter market conditions. Low barriers to entry, lingering effects from the pandemic boom,

and a glamorized image of real estate careers have led to an excess of undertrained and inexperienced agents. Although many new real estate agents enter the industry each year, a significant portion struggle to earn a sustainable income or build long-term careers, according to the association.

Mercado Ruiz expressed concern that the Department of Consumer Affairs would lose jurisdiction, as it does not exist in other states.

“My big question is: where was the real estate industry during this entire process? There were public hearings, conflicting opinions, and the industry was consulted. Unfortunately, all of this occurred in silence and without meaningful participation,” he said. “My final plea to you, Honorable Governor Jenniffer González: I ask you not to sign this bill. The real estate industry is placing its hopes in you. Please protect our jurisdiction. Protect our professionals. And, more importantly, protect the Puerto Rican consumer.”

Miguel Mercado Ruiz, president of the Board of Realtors, Salespeople, and Real Estate Companies

If the bill becomes law, professionals with valid licenses from other U.S. jurisdictions would be able to practice in Puerto Rico without repeating evaluation processes.

Senate Bill 6 outlines a list of professions and trades that would fall under the supervision of the examining boards associated with the commonwealth Department of State, subjecting them to a new uniform occupational licensing process. Recognized professions include certified public accountants, architects, landscape architects, pharmacy assistants, barbers, professional counselors, cosmetologists, dentists, private

detectives, electricians, nurses, personal trainers, hairstylists, photographers, tour guides, pesticide inspectors, legal advocates, sign language interpreters, physical education teachers, auto mechanics, nutritionists, dietitians, optometrists, electrical examiners, plumbers, podiatrists, psychologists, chemists, nail technicians, vocational rehabilitation specialists, speech and language therapists, occupational therapists, and social workers. All of those occupations would be subject to a uniform licensing evaluation, along with procedures for granting, denying, or reviewing licenses, as established by the Department of State.

Concerns grow over dire conditions in immigrant detention

Far from public view, the toll of the Trump administration’s crackdown on immigration is unfolding in overcrowded detention facilities across the country.

Some immigrants have gone a week or more without showers. Others sleep pressed tightly together on bare floors. Medications for diabetes, high blood pressure and other chronic health problems are often going unprovided. In New York and Los Angeles, people have been held for days in cramped rooms designed for brief processing, not prolonged confinement, and their lawyers and family members have remained in the dark about their whereabouts.

The nation’s immigration detention system is buckling under the weight of record numbers as the Trump administration intensifies its enforcement agenda with raids on workplaces and arrests at immigration courts. More than 56,000 immigrants were in government custody on June 15, exceeding the current capacity of 41,000.

“These are the worst conditions I have seen in my 20-year career,” said Paul Chavez, litigation and advocacy director at Americans for Immigrant Justice in Florida, which represents detainees. “Conditions were never great, but this is horrendous.”

At least 10 immigrants have died in ICE custody in the six months since Jan. 1, including two at a facility in Miami, the Krome detention center, where detainees this month formed a human “SOS” sign in the yard. At least two of the deaths were suicides, in Arizona and Georgia. (An average of about seven deaths a year occurred in ICE custody during the four years of the Biden administration.)

Immigration detentions have soared since late May, when Stephen Miller, the White House aide overseeing immigration policy, set a goal of 3,000 arrests per day.

To accommodate the swelling numbers, the administration has expanded contracts with prison operators and pushed for a substantial funding increase to secure additional capacity. The House version of the budget reconciliation bill proposes $45 billion for immigration detention, more than 10 times the current budget.

Many immigrants already have outstanding deportation orders, and others agree to voluntarily leave the country. In those cases, ICE officials are able to swiftly put them on planes or buses out of the country. But many others are entitled to court hearings, which take time, and ICE is either releasing those detainees on bond, which also requires a court hearing, or holding them in custody if they are deemed a flight risk.

The Department of Homeland Security, which oversees ICE, categorically denied all claims of overcrowding and poor conditions at its facilities. A spokesperson, Tricia McLaughlin, said in a statement that all detainees “are provided with proper meals, medical treatment, and have opportunities to communicate with their family members and lawyers.”

McLaughlin added that Kristi Noem, the homeland security secretary, had called on states and local government to help with beds and detention space, and she noted that multiple court rulings have led to delays in deporting immigrants.

“Despite a historic number of injunctions, DHS is working

rapidly overtime to remove these aliens from detention centers to their final destination — home,” McLaughlin said.

But interviews with more than two dozen former detainees, lawyers, family members and lawmakers suggest that conditions in facilities across the country have become unsanitary, intolerable and in some cases, for detainees with health problems, unsafe.

Marcelo Gomes, an 18-year-old Brazilian from Milford, Massachusetts, was pulled over on his way to volleyball practice in late May. Gomes, who has lived in the United States on a long-expired visa since age 7, said in an interview that he spent six days in a windowless, overcrowded room at an ICE field office before being released on bond.

There was one toilet for 35 to 40 men, who had no privacy when using it, he said. They slept on the concrete floor in head-by-toe formation with aluminum blankets to cover them.

He lost seven pounds in six days, he said, because the food was poor and the portions tiny. “It was so bad,” he said, “I used water to drink it down.”

Gomes said he was not able to shower or change his clothes the entire time he was there.

At the Northwest Detention Center in Tacoma, Washington, run by the GEO Group, a private prison firm, conditions have deteriorated as the population has significantly increased, according to Global Rights Advocacy, a nonprofit, and La Resistencia, a grassroots group.

Alejandra Gonza, a human-rights lawyer, said that detainees told her that guards have been so overworked that they have delivered food close to midnight and have failed to provide yard time or disburse funds sent by their families to buy food, hygiene products and make phone calls.

She said she knew of some detainees who had been placed in prolonged solitary confinement or on suicide watch after complaining about conditions.

After a tour that his staff members took in May to a facility in Estancia, New Mexico, Sen. Martin Heinrich, a Democrat, reported that several detainees complained that they had been given few opportunities to shower, had been limited to two bottles of drinking water per day and were unable to flush their

toilets for days at a time.

A California lawmaker, Rep. Judy Chu, posted on social media that she had visited a detention center in the remote desert town of Adelanto and seen detainees “held in filthy, inhumane conditions” who had been unable to communicate with lawyers or family members.

“They were not able to change their underwear for 10 days,” she said in a video.

In a statement, Christopher V. Ferreira, a GEO Group spokesperson, said that facilities run by GEO like those in California, Pennsylvania and Washington, provided roundthe-clock medical care, proper diets and visitation services. Ferreira said the detention centers were monitored by federal overseers to ensure they met strict standards on food, safety and health care.

“Our contracts also set strict limits on a facility’s capacity,” he said. “Simply put, our facilities are never overcrowded.”

Immigrants have been locked up for several days at a time at an ICE processing facility in the basement of a federal building in downtown Los Angeles that is intended to hold people for less than 12 hours, until they are released or transferred to a detention center.

“They’re packing people in there as if they were sardines,” said Mark Rosenbaum, a lawyer with Public Counsel, a legal nonprofit. “It’s a horror show.”

He said ICE authorities were preventing people from contacting lawyers and urging them to agree to swift deportation. “It’s a no-constitutional-rights zone,” he said.

Javier, 55, a Mexican day laborer who was arrested this month by agents in front of a doughnut shop in Pasadena, California, at 5:40 a.m., said that about 60 men were jammed into the frigid, filthy space downtown.

“We felt like we were in a cage,” said Javier, who has lived in the United States for 28 years but did not want his last name used to avoid jeopardizing his immigration case. “They would take out five men and bring in 10 more.”

He said there was “utter despair and fear” in the room. The immigrants were forced to share one foul toilet; the other was out of order.

Javier was transferred to Adelanto, but lawyers with Immigrant Defenders Law Center, a nonprofit, secured his release because he is undergoing treatment for cancer.

In New York, immigration lawyers and federal lawmakers have struggled to gain access to the 10th floor of a federal building in lower Manhattan, another intake center designed to hold immigrants for just a few hours. In recent weeks, lawyers said, their clients have reported being forced to sleep on the floor or on benches during dayslong stays.

As with other detainees around the country, many who start off in Manhattan are quickly transferred out.

Anne Pilsbury, a lawyer in New York City, said that her client, a Honduran man who has lived in the United States for years, was handcuffed in front of her when he reported for an ICE check-in on June 9. She later learned that he had been held in the lower Manhattan building overnight and sent to a jail on Long Island the next day.

Minnesota lawmaker and her husband remembered for their shared legacy

Minnesota state Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, were remembered at their funeral Saturday as “extraordinary public servants” who were killed in an inexplicable act of political violence.

Their wooden caskets rested side by side inside the Basilica of St. Mary in Minneapolis as hundreds of political colleagues, friends and relatives sat shoulder to shoulder in the pews to say goodbye to the couple, who were assassinated at their suburban Minneapolis home this month.

Former President Joe Biden and former Vice President Kamala Harris joined the mourners for the somber Catholic funeral Mass, although neither spoke during the service.

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, his eyes red from crying, delivered the eulogy. He praised Hortman, a former speaker of the Minnesota House of Representatives, as a consequential and compassionate political leader and her husband as her proudest supporter. Walz said their shared legacy included improving roads and bridges, and free school lunches and expanded preschool for children.

“Millions of Minnesotans will get to live their lives better because she and Mark chose public service,” Walz said.

He referred only obliquely to the June 14 attack that has forced people across Minnesota and the country to grapple with recent political violence.

Walz focused on the Hortmans’ political commitment and their love of gardening, playing billiards, and making sourdough and margaritas, letting their lives stand in contrast with their killings.

“Maybe this is a moment when each of us can examine the way we work together, the way we talk about each other, the way we fight for the things we care about,” Walz said. “A moment when each of us can recommit to

engaging in politics and life the way Mark and Melissa did: fiercely, enthusiastically, heartily, but without ever losing sight of our common humanity.”

Several people wiped tears during Walz’s eulogy, which included some moments of levity about the Capitol’s chilly, poorly lit rooms and Hortman’s love of ’80s music.

In his homily, the Rev. Daniel Griffith said the Hortmans’ killings had made Minnesota ground zero for political violence and extremism in the United States, just as the murder of George Floyd in 2020 had made the state an epicenter for a national debate over racial injustice.

“Both of these must be decried in the strongest possible terms,” Griffith said. “They are, respectively, a threat to human dignity and indeed our democracy.”

Authorities say a 57-year-old suspect impersonating a police officer fatally shot the Hortmans at their home in the suburb of Brooklyn Park, the same night he shot and seriously wounded another Democratic Minnesota lawmaker and his wife. The suspect had named dozens of other potential political targets, authorities said.

Saturday’s funeral was an extraordinary tableau that mixed public and private grief with hope that some good could be salvaged from the Hortmans’ deaths. Between hymns and Gospel readings, mourners offered public prayers asking for an end to violence, hate and division.

The service was also the culmination of an outpouring of mourning across Minnesota. On Friday, Biden joined thousands of politicians and everyday Minnesotans who streamed into the Capitol rotunda, where the Hortmans lay in state, surrounded by photos and flowers. An urn containing the ashes of their golden retriever, Gilbert, who was also killed in the attack, sat beside them.

On Saturday, as the service began, a priest blessed the Hortmans’ caskets as their son, Colin, broke down in tears and reached for the hand of his sister, Sophie. Walz, one of the pallbearers, cried as he accompanied the caskets to the front of the church. He embraced Harris, his 2024 presidential running mate, as they took their seats.

The pews were filled with dozens of current and former state lawmakers from both parties. The state’s former governor, Mark Dayton, and its current attorney general, Keith Ellison, were among those who attended. Sens. Amy Klobuchar and Tina Smith joined hundreds of other people who were watching a livestream from afar. Some were still struggling to make sense of what had happened.

“It’s unthinkable,” said Kurt Daudt, a former Republican representative and one of Melissa Hortman’s main political adversaries. He said they “fought like cats and dogs” but shared a mutual respect. “We each need to do a better job of understanding that while we may disagree, we’re all humans, and we all care about this country and each other.”

Molly Pederson, a researcher at the statehouse, said she hoped the couple’s killings would end the “dehumanizing rhetoric” aimed at political figures.

Before an honor guard escorted the Hortmans’ caskets out of the church, Colin Hortman stood and quoted from the Prayer of St. Francis of Assisi. He said his mother kept the prayer in her wallet as a constant reminder of her personal “Golden Rule.” It read in part, “Where there is hatred, let me sow love.”

“It never left her side,” he said.

Concerns grow over dire conditions in immigrant detention

From page 5

“From that point, every time I checked the government’s detainee locator system, it would either have no information or it would show a new jail,” she said, “but when I called that facility, they would tell me he had been moved.”

Since being detained, the man, who is a construction worker and father of four children, has been held in Pennsylvania, Texas and Ohio.

Cynthia Myers, a Chicago woman whose husband was detained while awaiting asylum, said he was placed in an overcrowded facility in Monroe, Louisiana. Detainees there,

he told her, were “constantly intimidated and pressured by staff to self-deport, with no regard for their rights or due process.”

Several of those interviewed said that ICE officials appeared to be trying to free up space by encouraging detainees to accept quick deportation.

A lawyer in Arizona, Nera Shefer, said that some of her clients had recently been offered $1,000 by authorities if they agreed to immediate voluntary departure. She said all of them had declined.

“It seems they are randomly picking people, and telling them, ‘You want to leave? We’ll pay you because we need your bed,’” she said.

Courts will have to grapple with new limits on their power

ASupreme Court ruling limiting the ability of judges to block White House policies will bring a wave of urgency and uncertainty to the federal courts, experts said, as plaintiffs pursue new ways of blocking President Donald Trump’s agenda and judges sort out how to apply the court’s complex ruling.

Last Friday, the Supreme Court ruled that district court judges likely exceeded their authority with so-called nationwide injunctions.

Also known as universal injunctions, they have been used by judges more than two dozen times to block pieces of Trump’s second-term agenda, including freezes on federal funding, changes to voting rules and limitations on birthright citizenship — all with the stroke of a pen.

Now, the justices ruled, the lower courts can only block government policies for “each plaintiff with standing to sue.”

Those plaintiffs can still win rulings that affect a large number of people, including, for example, everyone living in a state in a case brought by that state’s attorney general.

The justices also specified two exceptions to its new rule: class-action lawsuits, which can apply to groups of people in a similar legal situation, and cases brought under the Administrative Procedure Act, which governs executive branch rule-making and allows judges to block actions by agencies found to be “arbitrary” or “capricious.”

The result was a muddled picture, with the Trump administration and its adversaries rolling out competing readings of what is likely to happen next.

The White House framed the ruling as effectively giving a judicial green light to its entire agenda.

But hours later, Skye Perryman, the president of Democracy Forward, a legal group that has brought dozens of lawsuits against the administration and has won a number of nationwide injunctions, called the Supreme Court’s ruling “a very limited decision.” The ruling, she added, left open a number of options for plaintiffs who want the courts to block administration policies in their entirety.

What the ruling means for birthright citizenship

Friday’s ruling centered on decisions from three judges that blocked an executive order issued by the administration taking away auto-

matic citizenship for babies born to immigrants lacking permanent legal status and green card holders.

For more than a century, courts have held that the 14th Amendment’s guarantee of citizenship to “all persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof” meant that anyone born in the United States was a citizen.

At a news conference Friday, Trump insisted that the amendment, which was ratified following the Civil War, was “meant for the babies of slaves.”

“It wasn’t meant for people trying to scam the system,” he added.

So far, lower courts have taken a different view, ruling that his executive order was likely unconstitutional. Two of the three lawsuits were brought by state attorneys general representing 22 states, most of them led by Democrats.

While the Supreme Court decision did not address the legality of Trump’s executive order, children born in other states could now stand to lose automatic citizenship, according to Nick Brown, Washington state’s attorney general and one of those who sued the Trump administration.

“If you are living in a state that did not participate in this coalition of action against the Trump administration, then your rights are in question,” he said Friday at a news conference.

The court’s ruling acknowledged the possibility that it could lead to a “patchwork injunction” in which the rules governing citizenship would vary from state to state.

Mila Sohoni, a law professor at Stanford who filed a friend-of-the-court brief in the case, said the ruling “threatens to leave many newborns who are entitled to citizenship without

any way to prove they are citizens.”

“Administrative complexity” and “unfairness” would result if parents had to provide proof of their legal status to obtain citizenship for a new baby, she said.

Still, the court noted that the executive order would not take effect for 30 days, allowing time for new legal challenges.

For instance, the Supreme Court’s ruling could lead to more pressure on state and local governments to join the 22 states that have sued the administration over the order, said David A. Super, a law professor at Georgetown University.

Because states “may be able to get relief for themselves, but no farther,” that “could induce more states and counties to join such suits rather than free-riding on those that do sue,” he said.

The decision could also lead to class-action suits filed by new and expectant mothers whose babies’ citizenship would be at risk, in which they could seek an order protecting the citizenship of babies born to other mothers, as well. The first of those suits was filed on Friday in U.S. District Court in Maryland.

Samuel L. Bray, a law professor at the University of Notre Dame and a critic of nationwide injunctions, said in a statement that he expected a “surge” of new lawsuits against Trump’s birthright order. Courts, he said, will continue to find it unconstitutional. “I do not expect the president’s executive order on birthright citizenship will ever go into effect,” he said.

What the ruling means for other cases

On Friday, Trump said the ruling could lead to the reinstatement of “numerous policies”

that had been “wrongly enjoined on a nationwide basis.”

He referred to a list of policies that had been blocked by the lower courts, including withholding federal funds from “sanctuary cities” that refuse to carry out mass deportations; ending programs that admit and process refugees; and cutting off taxpayer funding for health care providers that offer transgender care.

Exactly how the lower courts will apply the new Supreme Court ruling in other cases remains to be seen, and is likely to itself be the subject of further court battles.

Existing nationwide injunctions that bind the Trump administration will remain in place as judges consider whether there is a way to narrow them to a smaller group or geographic area without losing protections the injunctions have given plaintiffs.

Experts said that opponents of Trump’s actions would likely also flood the courts with class-action lawsuits to block orders dealing with issues beyond birthright citizenship. Some class-action cases have been used successfully to block Trump administration policies, such as restrictions on due process for migrants and transgender care for federal prisoners.

For a case to proceed as a class action, it must be “certified” by the court to find that the legal situations of a group’s members are sufficiently similar, and that the groups are too large for each member to seek personal representation.

The certification standard for large, diverse classes has also changed because of a Supreme Court ruling from 2011. The court found that five Walmart employees could not represent a class of more than 1 million others, because the larger group’s claims of employment discrimination were too varied.

Trump says US ending trade talks with Canada

President Donald Trump on Friday said the United States would terminate all trade discussions with Canada, “effective immediately,” over the country’s plan to begin collecting digital services taxes from U.S. technology giants.

Trump described those taxes as a “blatant attack,” and promised on social media that he would inform Canada within the next seven days about the duties that “they will be paying to do business with the United States of America.”

In ceasing talks, Trump once again upended the increasingly fraught relationship between the United States and Canada, which has traditionally been one of America’s closest allies and largest trading partners.

Those relations had seemed to be improving after Canada’s new prime minister, Mark Carney, took office. The two nations even appeared to be on track to announce a trade deal

in July, having huddled at length this month on the sidelines of the Group of 7 summit, which was hosted in Alberta.

But on Friday, Trump signaled that Canada was back in the penalty box.

“We have all the cards. We have every single one,” Trump said in the Oval Office, adding that “economically, we have such power over Canada.”

Canadian officials did not respond to requests for comment on whether Carney would try to call Trump or step back from collecting the digital tax. But Carney’s office said in a statement that his government would “continue to engage in these complex negotiations with the United States in the best interests of Canadian workers and businesses.”

A decision by Trump to follow through and increase tariffs on a North American neighbor could unleash chaos on both sides of the border, with U.S. companies and consumers facing the brunt of higher import costs. Financial markets briefly recoiled over the breakdown in

negotiations, although the S&P 500 recovered and reached a new high Friday.

Canada’s 3% digital services tax has been in place since last year, but the first payments are only due beginning Monday. Because the tax is retroactive, American companies were preparing to turn over roughly $2.7 billion to the Canadian government, according to a trade group for large American tech companies.

U.S. officials from both parties have long chafed at taxes such as the one Canada has imposed, calling them unfairly targeted at services provided by American companies such as Google, Apple and Amazon. The foreign policies target the revenue that businesses earn from online advertising, the sale of user data and other services, even if the firm is headquartered elsewhere.

Countries around the world have pursued them as a way to capture revenue from the largely American companies that play increasingly important roles in their economies.

On Friday, Trump singled out Europe, where several countries have imposed versions of the tax, describing them as “very nasty.” But he did not suggest that he planned to halt ongoing trade negotiations with the European Union.

To try to defuse the threat of major new taxes on American companies and economic conflicts, officials have, in the past, worked to reach broad, multilateral agreements on international corporation taxation. Canada and the United States now appear headed to a much more direct confrontation over the issue.

The U.S. government has previously announced a 25% tariff on all Canadian exports, except for those that are subject to a trade deal with Canada and Mexico brokered during

Trump’s first term. Like other countries, Canada is also subject to a 50% tariff on its exports of steel and aluminum.

Trump has frequently brandished imminent plans to penalize other countries with high levies, only to later back down, especially if markets panic over the potential interruptions to commerce. The president’s newest threat arrived just weeks before he is expected to reimpose sky-high tariffs on nearly every U.S. trading partner — a set of so-called “reciprocal” rates that he first announced, and quickly suspended, in early April.

Trump and his top aides initially pledged to broker 90 deals during that 90-day window, although the administration has made minimal progress toward that goal. Earlier Friday, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent signaled new flexibility in the deadline, suggesting the administration hopes to complete much of its work on trade by Labor Day.

“We have 200 countries, you could say 200 countries plus, we can’t do that,” Trump said later during a news conference at the White House. “So, at a certain point, over the next week and a half or so or maybe before, we’re going to send out a letter. We talked to many of the countries, and we’re just going to tell them what they have to pay to do business in the United States.”

Canada and the United States had announced this month that they would get to a new trade deal “within 30 days” — namely, around July 20. But despite the friendly atmosphere and obvious gestures that show Trump likes Carney, there were signs that the trade talks were far from uncomplicated.

The digital services tax is only one of many problems in the trade relationship between the two nations. At various points in time, Trump has complained about barriers for American companies to compete in the country’s dairy and banking sectors, for example. Trump has also repeatedly flirted with the concept of Canada becoming the 51st state, an idea that Canadian officials have repeatedly rejected.

“I think it’s a much better deal for Canada, but, you know, it’s up to them. They’re going to have to pay a lot of tariffs, and they’re going to have to pay a lot of money for the dome,” he said, referring to his offer to include Canada in his air defense system known as Golden Dome, in exchange for $71 billion.

In recent days, though, the Trump administration had appeared to back off its other aggressive threats to hit back at countries for their plans to tax American companies. For weeks, Republican lawmakers had planned to include a new, so-called “revenge tax” aimed at deterring countries such as Canada from targeting American corporations with new taxes.

Crypto industry moves into the US housing market

The nation’s largest mortgage finance firms will begin accepting crypto as an asset on a mortgage application, another significant step by the Trump administration to bring digital currencies into mainstream finance.

This week, President Donald Trump’s housing director, William Pulte, said he would direct Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac — the nation’s big mortgage finance firms — to consider homebuyers’ crypto investments as part of their overall wealth in assessing whether they can afford a mortgage. Traditionally, a homebuyer’s cash savings and stock investments are what mortgage lenders consider.

Fannie and Freddie, which are a critical cog in the housing market, buy mortgages from banks and establish a set of criteria for which borrowers’ mortgages they will accept.

The announcement by Pulte, director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency, on Wednesday comes as an increasing number of Americans have been using digital currencies to buy houses and new companies have formed to help them take advantage of their crypto holdings to buy real estate.

The crypto market and its many supporters have been pushing regulators in this direction for several years, raising concerns among consumer advocates that this lightly regulated and highly volatile investment asset is being tied to something as vital to the

economy as the housing market.

And Trump has gone from a crypto critic to a big booster.

“In a world where regulatory enforcement has been largely taken off the table, the boundaries are getting pushed very quickly,” said Tyler Gellasch, a former lawyer at the Securities and Exchange Commission, who runs the Healthy Markets Association, a financial industry trade group.

But from homebuyers and crypto enthusiasts, there is growing demand. In a recent survey, roughly 14% of homebuyers said they planned to sell crypto assets to help get the cash to cover a down payment on a home, up from 5% in 2019, according to Redfin, the residential real estate brokerage company.

Crypto is gaining traction in the housing market as home sales have stagnated, leaving many unable to sell or buy a home or tap into their home’s equity through loans.

Several startups are already pitching crypto as a way to cut through the market’s current morass and jump-start home sales.

One firm, Milo, founded by Josip Rupena, a former financial adviser at Morgan Stanley, offers investors a way to use bitcoin as collateral for getting a home mortgage.

For a $1 million home, an investor posts $1 million worth of bitcoin, which Milo puts into a secure account. The firm provides $1 million in cash to buy the home.

Milo then writes an equivalent mortgage that the homebuyer is ultimately responsible to pay off. The interest tends to be a few

percentage points higher than a normal mortgage, but the customer gets the benefit of not having to sell any crypto or pay capital gains. When the mortgage is paid off, Milo returns the bitcoin to the investor.

Rupena said he had already underwritten $65 million of such mortgages, and he welcomed the FHFA’s policy shift on crypto.

Unlike most bank mortgages — like the ones Fannie and Freddie buy — Rupena’s firm does not require a homeowner to make a down payment. His firm finances 100% of the transaction, which most banks will not do and that is not likely to change with the new FHFA rule on crypto.

“This is the first step in getting crypto parity with other assets,” Rupena said of the FHFA decision.

Other firms are helping homeowners’ tap their home’s equity to buy crypto. The strategy is similar to so-called home equity investment contracts, which provide lumpsum cash payments to a homeowner in return for the right to share in the appreciation in a home’s value.

But instead of the homeowner using cash from the deal to pay for home improvements or a child’s college tuition, they are using it to buy only one thing: bitcoin.

“Turn your home into a bitcoin acquisition engine,’’ one of the startup firms called Horizon, said in a post on the social media platform X.

Here is how it typically works: Some of the firms loan the homeowner cash to buy

bitcoin based on the value of the equity in their homes. The firms typically make money by sharing in the appreciation in the value of a house when an owner sells it.

The deals are attractive because the homeowner does not need to make monthly payments during the life of the agreement, as they would with a traditional home equity loan.

As protection, some of the firms also place a lien on a house during the length of the contract — some of which can last for a decade.

Horizon debuted its offering at the bitcoin conference last month in Las Vegas, where two of Trump’s sons were headline speakers.

Consumer advocates see reason for concern.

“My general impression is that taking any lien on your house to buy crypto is a terrible idea,” said Andrew Pizor, a senior attorney at the National Consumer Law Center, who specializes in mortgage financing. “This is the roof over your head, and you have to be cautious.”

All of these programs are in their infancy, so it’s too soon to say how much traction they will ultimately get.

Representatives for the companies said concerns about consumers being taking advantage of were overstated. Most prospective customers are wealthy investors. The firms also said they intended to be compliant with existing federal and state laws.

Just a heads up, Trading Day will be in the capable hands of Lewis Krauskopf next week and Alden Bentley the following week, while I take some time off to recharge the batteries. Back on July 13.

Another extraordinary week ended on Friday with the S&P 500 and Nasdaq hitting all-time highs as investors ramped up bets that U.S. interest rates will soon fall, a stunning turnaround from the post-’Liberation Day’ tariff gloom of early April.

Several developments this week fed into the rate cut narrative - the Iran-Israel ceasefire, tumbling oil prices, soft U.S. economic data, dovish comments from some Fed officials, and renewed pressure from President Donald Trump on the Fed to ease.

Fed Chair Jerome Powell pushed back against suggestions rates could be cut as soon as July, arguing that the impact of tariffs should be assessed first, and the consensus among the Fed’s 19 rate-setters is to hold the line too. But traders are now leaning towards three quarter-point rate cuts this year.

Progress on trade is also boosting investor sentiment. Trump said a deal between the US and China had been signed, but did not provide details, and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the two countries have resolved issues surrounding shipments of rare earth minerals and magnets to the US.

That said, trade optimism was dented on Friday after Trump abruptly cut off trade talks with Canada over its new tax on U.S. technology firms, calling it a “blatant attack” and saying he will set a new tariff rate on Canadian goods next week.

The most significant market move of the week, however, was not in equities but in currencies. The dollar continued its decline, and is now down more than 10% this year. That’s its worst first-half performance of any year in more than 50 years.

It should be remembered, however, that the dollar started the year at extremely expensive levels, so some adjustment was always likely. This is proving to be a pretty severe adjustment, one which markets and policymakers appear to be relaxed about. For now.

Refugees worry: Is Nicaragua assassinating government critics in Costa Rica?

Roberto Samcam Ruiz took security measures seriously. A retired Nicaraguan army major who had spoken out against the Sandinista government, he fled to neighboring Costa Rica after his name started popping up on wanted posters.

When out in public in San José, the Costa Rican capital, he changed shirts to throw off any would-be followers. He rode in Ubers — never buses — and constantly warned other Nicaraguan anti-government activists living in Costa Rica to watch their backs.

“At one point, he became totally paranoid,” said Claudia Vargas, his wife of 25 years.

Samcam’s precautions were not enough.

On June 19, two assassins who had apparently staked him out for weeks stormed his condominium complex in San José and shot him eight times inside his home.

Samcam’s killing became at least the sixth time a Nicaraguan dissident was shot, abducted or killed in Costa Rica since hundreds of thousands of Nicaraguans fled their country after deadly protests there in 2018.

Activists, human rights advocates and dozens of former Latin American presidents said Samcam’s killing strongly suggested that the government of Nicaragua is running sophisticated intelligence operations on foreign soil against its enemies. There have been no arrests so far.

The killing has the potential to disrupt diplomatic relations between two friendly, neighboring Central American countries that rely on each other for trade.

But Costa Rica’s president, Rodrigo Chaves Robles, apparently unwilling to antagonize an important trade partner and an increasingly authoritarian government, has said nothing on the matter, alarming exiles who had hoped for a more robust response.

The Costa Rican Ministry of Security referred questions about the killing to the president’s office. The president’s spokesperson referred questions back to the ministry.

With President Donald Trump ending the refugee program that resettled Nicaraguans in the United States, seeking U.S. asylum is no longer an option.

So the thousands of Nicaraguans living in Costa Rica who were forced out of their homeland are living in fear and wondering if they need to pack up and run a second time.

“We came here fleeing from a dictatorship and can’t be safe in the country that gave us refuge,” said Wilberto Miranda Aburto, a Nicaraguan journalist. “We are not safe in Costa Rica.”

Samcam’s death pointed a spotlight on Nicaragua’s copresidents, Daniel Ortega and his wife, Rosario Murillo, who have tightened their grip on power. After Ortega took office in 2007, the couple have manipulated elections, courts and the legislature to solidify their hold over the country.

As protests grew, they accused opponents of plotting a coup, jailed them, forced them into exile, seized their properties and took away their Nicaraguan citizenship.

United Nations experts likened them to Nazis.

Murillo, who serves as the government’s spokesperson, did not respond to requests for comment.

Samcam, 66, a member of the Sandinista party, broke with the party after he retired from the military and became a blogger, political analyst and radio host. He tried unsuccessfully to run for office in Jinotepe, a city in the Carazo department about an hour south of Managua, the capital, but elections were widely denounced as fraudulent.

In 2018, he was one of hundreds of thousands of people who participated in an enormous uprising against the OrtegaMurillo government.

The government ultimately shut down the protests nationwide with force, killing more than 300 people. Nearly 250,000 Nicaraguans have fled and have sought refugee protection in Costa Rica, said Juan Carlos Arce, a Nicaraguan human rights lawyer.

Now, Vargas finds herself rethinking all of the security measures her husband insisted on.

“I am going through all these phases, which I know are normal, of asking myself, ‘When Roberto asked about security, should I have paid more attention?’” she said. “This was a political motive to silence Roberto’s voice for being too powerful, too potent.”

Samcam became a critical voice after the 2018 protests, using his knowledge of military materiel to show that the

armed forces — not the police — had conducted the crackdown.

Experts say the Ortegas were particularly furious at Samcam and other former Sandinistas whom they viewed as traitors for breaking from their ranks. And they were especially angry at those who helped organize the Carazo roadblocks.

“They put us on a list where they cataloged us as military objectives,” said Joao Maldonado, 35, also a former Sandinista from Carazo.

Gunmen in Costa Rica hunted Maldonado down twice.

His voice still slightly off from a bullet that landed in his jaw, Maldonado recounted how the first time, in 2021, he was driving when he was shot in the abdomen, twice in the left wrist, once in the right clavicle and once near his heart. As the bullets flew, he said he asked God to forgive his sins and said to himself, “Jesus Christ, I accept you as my Lord and savior.”

He survived.

Maldonado said he applied for refugee status through a U.S. State Department program, which Trump has since eliminated. Even under the Biden administration, the vetting took two years. After being accepted in 2023, he was targeted by gunmen again while running errands, 10 days before he was set to leave the country.

He was shot eight times, including once in the face. His girlfriend was struck in the spine and paralyzed.

“The facts speak for themselves,” Maldonado, who has since left Costa Rica, said in a video interview. “It is a reality: This is transnational persecution.”

Carlos Fernando Chamorro, a prominent journalist — whose mother, Violeta Barrios de Chamorro, a former president of Nicaragua, died only days before Samcam’s killing — said Costa Rica had a long history of offering refuge to politically persecuted people from Nicaragua. He lived there as a child when his family had to flee the Somoza dictatorship, so when his life was at risk, he never imagined going anyplace else.

“We trust that this is a country of peace, democracy and democratic institutions,” he said.

Asked if he was afraid, he quoted a line that his father, newspaper publisher Pedro Joaquín Chamorro, frequently cited: “Each person is the master of their own fear.”

The elder Chamorro was killed in Managua in 1978.

Iran holds state funeral for military commanders and nuclear scientists

Thousands of mourners thronged the streets of Iran’s capital, Tehran, on Saturday at a funeral procession for about 60 people killed in the war with Israel, including some of the country’s top military commanders and nuclear scientists.

Live coverage by Iranian state television showed streets that were barren during the 12-day war now packed for the state funeral. Participants waved green, red and white Iranian flags, red banners with religious slogans or branches of white flowers.

The often-heard public chants in the Islamic Republic, “Death to America” and “Death to Israel,” rang out as trucks with coffins inched along the route between two of Tehran’s main squares. From there, the coffins were expected to be transferred for burial at various cemeteries. Some of the deceased will be interred with their families.

There was no sign of Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, but President Masoud Pezeshkian marched in the procession.

The funeral was a reminder of the heavy toll Iran had paid not only in losses from the top echelon of its military forces but also from its contentious nuclear program. Among the more than 600 people killed in the Israeli attacks, 90 were military personnel, according to Iranian state television. The dead included at least 11 prominent nuclear scientists.

The coffins were covered with Iranian flags and adorned with rose petals. One truck held the coffins of children, according to Press TV, a state media outlet. As the dead passed, mourners reached out to kiss or touch the coffins.

State news media did not immediately release a list of all

of those included in the funeral, the largest from the war thus far. But the Tasnim news agency, which is affiliated with Iran’s Revolutionary Guard, reported that some of the top officers in the Iranian military were being laid to rest.

Official coverage of the funeral included a striking image of about 40 coffins before they joined the procession, all stacked one atop the other in rows of 10, with a picture of each victim affixed to the end of the coffin.

Among those honored were Gen. Hossein Salami, the commander in chief of the Guard — Iran’s powerful military force — and Gen. Amir Ali Hajizadeh, the head of the Guard’s air force unit. Hajizadeh was seen by Israeli officials as one of Iran’s most intelligent military commanders, whose death would have been a real blow to the country’s military operations.

Mourners in Tehran during a funeral procession for prominent figures killed in the recent war with Iran, including some of the country’s top military commanders and nuclear scientists, on Saturday, June 28, 2025. Live coverage by Iranian state television showed streets that were barren during the 12-day conflict with Israel were now packed for the state funeral. (Arash Khamooshi/The New York Times)

Both were killed in the first days of the war.

Brig. Gen. Esmail Ghaani, the commander of Iran’s elite Quds Force, attended the funeral.

The Quds Force is a branch of the Revolutionary Guard that oversees Iran’s proxy militias around the Middle East, including Hezbollah in Lebanon, Hamas in the Gaza Strip, the Houthis in Yemen and militias in Iraq.

One senior figure in the Quds Force, Mohammed Said Izadi, was among those included in the funeral. The Israeli military said he was a longtime target of Israeli intelligence who oversaw Iran’s ties to groups like Hamas, which led the Oct. 7, 2023, attack on Israel that ignited the war in Gaza.

Israeli officials said Izadi led the Palestinian affairs branch of the Quds Force. He was one of the few people who knew in advance about Hamas’ plan to launch the surprise Oct. 7 attack, The New York Times reported last year.

Maj. Gen. Ali Shadmani, another top military commander, was also commemorated at the funeral. The commander he replaced, Gholamali Rashid, had just been killed by Israel. He was named to head the Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters, the most important economic arm of the Guard.

Maj. Gen. Mohammad Bagheri, the chief of staff of the Iranian armed forces, was mourned Saturday, as were some nuclear scientists.

The ceremony coincided with a time of religious significance for Shiite Muslims, who are a majority in Iran.

This period commemorates the death of Imam Hussein, Prophet Muhammad’s grandson, who was believed to be

killed in A.D. 680 in the battle of Karbala in what is now Iraq. Many Shiites consider him a martyr and honor his spirit of sacrifice during a battle seen as central to the ShiiteSunni split within Islam.

Funeral coverage on official news media echoed these ideas in describing the deaths at the hands of Israel during the recent conflict.

After the United States joined the Israeli attack on Iran last weekend by bombing three nuclear sites, President Donald Trump declared that Iran’s nuclear program had sustained major damage. But other assessments have been more mixed.

Iran has long held that its nuclear development program was for peaceful purposes, but Israel said it started the war June 13 to take out nuclear and military targets.

Khamenei appeared to break an extended public silence to issue a statement posted Thursday claiming victory and criticizing the United States. That irked Trump, who had helped push through a ceasefire.

Trump told a news conference Friday that he would consider attacking Iran again, while on social media he wrote that he would drop his effort to have sanctions against Iran removed and suggested that the supreme leader should be grateful that his life was spared.

Iran’s foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi, responded with a post on the social media platform X, saying that if Trump genuinely sought a nuclear deal with Iran, he should abandon “the disrespectful and unacceptable tone” toward Khamenei and “stop hurting his millions of heartfelt followers.”

Budapest pride parade was bigger than ever, despite Orban’s ban

Agovernment ban on Hungary’s annual Pride parade backfired Saturday when more than 100,000 people marched through the Hungarian capital, far more than have taken part in previous such events.

Prime Minister Viktor Orban on Friday warned people to stay away from the banned parade, threatening “clear legal consequences” for anyone taking part. Government warnings, however, only turned what is usually a low-key event attended by a few thousand LGBTQ+ activists and their friends into a mass rally against Orban’s government.

“What is most painful for me is to see how stupid they think we all are,” said Edit Rocza, 46, a special-education teacher who traveled from southern Hungary to take part in the march for the first time. She said she was outraged by Orban’s claims that the event had been banned to protect children from “homosexual propaganda.”

That, she added, was “just a distraction from all the stealing and other real problems we have in this country.”

In March, Orban’s party rushed legislation through parliament that amended the right of assembly to make it illegal to hold gatherings like Pride parades, under an earlier law banning material that “propagates” homosexuality. Participants in such gatherings faced fines of nearly $600 apiece, while organizers risked imprisonment of up to a year.

The ban came as Orban and his party, Fidesz, were getting increasingly nervous about the rising popularity of Peter Magyar, a conservative opposition leader. Fidesz officials and party-controlled media outlets demanded that Magyar take a stand on Budapest Pride, setting what many saw as a political trap designed to out him as a closet liberal soft on child protection.

To prevent Orban’s government from derailing this year’s Pride parade, an annual fixture since 1995, Budapest’s liberal mayor, Gergely Karacsony, recast it as a municipal event celebrating Hungary’s recovery of full freedom when Soviet troops pulled out in June 1991. He allowed it to go ahead, renamed as Budapest Pride Freedom.

Authorities still insisted it was illegal and have threatened the mayor with jail, though they gave permission to an anti-gay march planned for Saturday by a far-right party.

Police watched the Pride parade from the sidelines but, by late afternoon, had made

While Budapest Pride has in the past attracted a few foreign diplomats, this year’s march drew more than 70 members of the European Parliament and scores of politicians from across Europe, including Sophie Rohonyi, the president of Defi, a liberal Belgian party.

Rohonyi said she came to Budapest to “show Mr. Orban that just because he is elected does not mean that he can do whatever he wants.” The right of assembly, she added, cannot be “thrown away just because a prime minister wants to ban Pride.”

Karacsony, the mayor, said he decided to go ahead with the parade because he was outraged that Hungary, a member of the European Union nominally committed to freedom of assembly and minority rights, would prohibit an annual event that has taken place with minimal fuss since 1995.

Balazs Szabo, a hard-line supporter of Orban who represents Hungary’s Polish minority in a local assembly, pleaded with the government to crack down.

no effort to halt the flood of people surging through central Budapest.

A minor kerfuffle broke out when a Dutch evangelical Christian walked through the crowd carrying a cross and cursing participants as “traitors to God,” followed by a man from Sweden waving a copy of the Bible.

The anti-gay march seems to have mostly fizzled. A small group of Our Homeland Movement supporters blocked a bridge across the Danube River on the original route of the Budapest Pride march. Marchers avoided them by taking another bridge.

Unable to find any marchers performing lewd acts or any evidence of the bacchanalia the government had been warning against for weeks, Orban’s media machine focused on traffic jams and minor scuffles caused by the march.

“Chaos at Budapest Pride,” read a banner headline in Magyar Nemzet, a media outlet that serves as Fidesz’s version of the Soviet communist party newspaper Pravda.

Orban, a populist nationalist, has long cast Hungary as a bastion of conservative values besieged by “woke” forces in the European Union and the United States, trying to distract attention from Hungary’s faltering economy and to rev up his right-wing rural base.

He has railed against “gender insanity,” and Hungary’s gay community has become

one of his favorite targets, portrayed in progovernment media as a puppet of hostile foreign forces.

In February, when Orban first floated the idea of banning Budapest Pride, he cited the departure of the Biden administration’s ambassador in Budapest, David Pressman, a gay man who, along with other Western ambassadors, had taken part in past Budapest Pride marches.

Because Pressman had left, Orban said, “the event is no longer under international protection and it will not take place.”

Pressman, who now lives in the United States and did not take part in Saturday’s parade, said he had never led the march, and that it “was never under international protection.”

Orban faces a real risk in the next elections. Most opinion polls give the party of his challenger, Magyar, a solid lead over Fidesz, raising the possibility that Orban’s party, in power for 15 years after four landslide election victories in a row, could lose power in a general election next year.

Magyar stayed away from the parade. In a message on his Facebook page Saturday, he offered oblique support for Budapest Pride, accusing Orban of trying “to turn Hungarian against Hungarian, in order to create fear and divide us.”

“It would be an unacceptable loss of face for both the police and the government if the homosexual parade were to take place,” he said in an open letter published this past week by a pro-government newspaper.

Pro-government media outlets have sought to rally public opinion by publishing photographs of semi-naked men and women simulating sex acts at raucous Pride events in San Francisco and Berlin. Photographs of participants at a youth music festival have also been presented as proof that gay people pose a threat to the welfare of Hungarian children.

Budapest Pride has traditionally been a more buttoned-down affair. Eager to keep it that way and to avoid providing fodder for Fidesz, organizers urged visiting foreign LGBTQ+ activists to “not show their genitals or nipples” and to respect local norms, Mate Hegedus, a Pride organizer, said. There is no dress code, he added, but “don’t wear less than you would on the beach.”

The request was largely heeded on Saturday.

Agnes Mehn, 59, another first-time attendee, brought her son, who uses a wheelchair, to the march, saying she “was fed up with this government trying to make us all afraid.”

She said she had never attended in the past because she was not particularly interested in LGBTQ+ issues, but “this year it was very important to come and show that we are not afraid and don’t agree with what they are doing.”

Following a government ban on Hungary’s annual Pride parade, more than 100,000 people marched through Budapest on Saturday, far more than have taken part in previous such events. (Facebook via Megyünk! Budapest Pride Felvonulás 2025. június 28.)

The Senate should let Trump’s bill die

The rise of the federal debt over the past two decades has prompted countless warnings that the United States is approaching a fiscal reckoning, a day when the government won’t be able to drink all it wants from the fountain of easy money.

The more immediate danger is that the fountain keeps flowing.

The fear of a future crisis is distracting attention from the problems that the government’s dependence on debt is already causing. We, the people, are spending a staggering amount of money each year to borrow money. The interest payments on the federal debt now exceed the government’s spending on the military. They are roughly equal to the annual cost of Medicare. The sum is more than the government spends on anything except Social Security.

President Donald Trump’s “Big Beautiful Bill” would deepen this profligacy, repeating the mistakes of the 2017 legislation on which it is based. Once again, Republicans are proposing to reduce taxation. Once again, they are proposing to force the government to borrow more to pay its bills. Once again, federal spending on interest payments would rise — and money spent on interest is money that can’t be spent on other things.

The government is on pace to pay more than $1 trillion to its lenders this year. The House version of Trump’s bill, already approved by that chamber, would increase interest payments on the debt by an average of $55 billion a year over the next decade, according to the Congressional Budget Office. The increase alone is enough money to fully repair every bridge in the United States. The Senate is still working on its bill, but early signs suggest it may cost even more than the House version.

Because the Trump administration and House Republicans have savaged the CBO’s analysis, it is worth adding that Phillip Swagel, who heads the office, is a Republican reappointed at the behest of House Republicans just two years ago. At the time, they praised his “objectivity and integrity.” The CBO’s analysis closely resembles independent assessments by the Penn Wharton Budget Model, the Yale Budget Lab and the

Tax Foundation.

The CBO also published an evaluation of the bill based on the methods that Republicans prefer, taking into account not just the direct impact on the government’s finances but also the indirect effects on the broader economy. That dynamic analysis found that the bill would have an even worse impact. The CBO predicted that the expansion of federal borrowing would drive up interest rates, doubling the increase in borrowing costs to more than $100 billion a year.

And for what? Americans are being asked to bear this burden for a bill that would deliver tax cuts primarily to the wealthiest Americans while slashing health care and other government services for lower-income families. The CBO estimates that the legislation would reduce the incomes of the poorest American families by almost 4%, while increasing the incomes of the wealthiest American families by more than 2%. It’s Robin Hood in reverse: Republicans are proposing to take hundreds of billions from the poor to give it to the rich. And the tax cuts are so large that they will add to the debt and force future generations to pay the bills.

In 2023, we criticized the Biden administration as well as congressional Republicans for failing to take meaningful steps to reduce the debt during a period of prosperity. But while both parties bear some responsibility, they do not bear equal responsibility.

Three times in the past half-century, Republicans have enacted large tax cuts that necessitated significant increases in federal borrowing. Each time they insisted the cuts would drive economic growth, even claiming that the expansion would be so large that the government would collect more tax revenue. Each time, they’ve been proved wrong.

Trump’s bill would be the fourth iteration of this failed experiment, and some Republicans are still retailing the same fantasies about the consequences. “This will reduce the deficit, not increase it,” Sen. John Thune of South Dakota, the Senate majority leader, said last week. That is simply false.

The expected increase in the debt is particularly absurd because the government would borrow much of the money from the same people who got the biggest tax cuts from the bill. Roughly half of the government’s debt typically is sold to American investors, and those investors are disproportionately affluent. When the government borrows from them rather than raising taxes, it is getting the same money from the same people on less favorable terms. Instead of taxing the rich, the government pays them interest.

deliver a fiscally responsible plan. Instead, they are playing make-believe.

A small number of Senate Republicans have expressed reservations about this situation. Sen. Rick Scott of Florida has said the projected growth in the debt is “fiscal insanity,” and Sen. Ron Johnson of Wisconsin has called it “unacceptable.” They’re right about that much. The refusal to confront America’s fiscal problems has a price, and it is rising rapidly.

Bringing the debt under control will require two things above all else: The government needs to raise taxes, especially on the wealthy, and it needs to make long-term changes in Social Security and Medicare, the major drivers of spending growth. The Republican Party controls both houses of Congress and the White House. Trump and his allies have the power to

Lalo Schifrin, 93, dies; composer of ‘Mission: Impossible’ and much more

Lalo Schifrin, the Grammy-winning Argentine-born composer who evoked the ticking, ominous suspense of espionage with his indelible theme to the television series “Mission: Impossible” as well as scored movies like “Cool Hand Luke,” “Bullitt” and “Dirty Harry,” died Thursday in Los Angeles. He was 93.

His wife, Donna, said the cause of his death, in a hospital, was complications of pneumonia.

Lalo Schifrin had a startlingly diverse career as a composer, arranger and conductor in a wide range of genres — from classical to jazz to Latin to folk to rock to hip-hop to electronic to the ancient music of the Aztecs.

He conducted symphony orchestras in London and Vienna, and philharmonic orchestras in Tel Aviv, Israel; Paris; and Los Angeles. He arranged music for the Three Tenors. He provided what The Washington Post called the music of “rebellious cool” for Paul Newman, Steve McQueen and Clint Eastwood.

But the prolific Schifrin, who wrote more than 100 film and television scores, was best known for “Mission: Impossible.” Interpretations of his propulsive theme have also been featured in the eight movies in the “Mission: Impossible” series, starring Tom Cruise, which began in 1996.

Like John Williams, whose many compositions for film include the theme from “Jaws,” Schifrin was a master of creating jittery unease and peril. Both composers worked with a recognizable style and a distinct purpose.

Williams used a repeated, hastening two-note “dundun, dun-dun” motif to create the serrated dread of a shark attack. Schifrin’s “Mission: Impossible” theme has an unusual 5/4 time signature: “DUN-dun da-da, DUN-dun da-da” (with the first “dun” lasting two beats). As a match-lit fuse sparked across the television screen toward the possible detonation of a bomb in the show’s opening montage, the driving rhythm induced jazzy tension and unsettling intrigue in a world of spycraft.

Some listeners found hints in Schifrin’s theme of “Take Five,” the Paul Desmond composition, also in 5/4 time, that was a hit for Dave Brubeck. Others noted a similarity to Morse code, with a dash-dash dot-dot beat that spells “M.I.” In 2006, Anthony Lane, a film critic for The New Yorker, lamented the sparse use of the theme music in “Mission: Impossible III,”

calling Schifrin’s theme “only the most contagious tune ever heard by mortal ears.”

When asked about the 5/4 meter at a news conference in Vienna, Schifrin joked that what he had in mind was visitors arriving on interplanetary flights: “The people in outer space have five legs and couldn’t dance to our music, so I wrote it for them.”

The original series ran on CBS from 1966 to 1973, with a cast that over the years included Peter Graves, Martin Landau, Barbara Bain, Greg Morris and Peter Lupus. The show followed a team of secret government agents assigned to undermine dictatorial governments behind the Iron Curtain and in developing nations with urgency, disguises and elaborate tactics. (A second series ran for two seasons on ABC, beginning in 1988.)

In 2018, Schifrin told the British newspaper The Independent that Bruce Geller, the creator of “Mission: Impossible,” told him to write a piece of music that would get people’s attention, “something exciting” to accompany the image, in the show’s opening credit sequence, of a fuse being lit.

His first attempt was a march, but Geller wanted something more dramatic. He showed Schifrin a rough edit of the pilot episode.

“Make it sound like a promise that there’s going to be a little bit of action,” Schifrin recalled Geller telling him. “Like, when they’re in the kitchen having a soft drink and the television set is on in the living room, they’ll hear it and say, ‘Oh, “Mission: Impossible” is on!’ Then they’ll run immediately into the living room.”

So he wrote what became the familiar theme, with the working title “Burning Fuse,” which he said on numerous occasions took him all of 90 seconds. The percussive brass, woodwind and bongo sections took “maybe” three minutes, he said, creating a sound that The Independent likened to “a pounding step in a sensational chase sequence.”

“It was my own little mission impossible,” he was fond of saying.

Boris Claudio Schifrin was born June 21, 1932, in Buenos Aires. His father, Luis Schifrin, was a violinist and concertmaster with the Buenos Aires Philharmonic. His mother, Clara (Ester) Schifrin, who came from a musical family, ran the household.

Having grown up immersed in classical music (Lalo Schifrin learned to play the piano at age 6) and knowing little about jazz, he described hearing Louis Armstrong, Fats Waller, Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie as “a religious conversion.”

He studied law at the University of Buenos Aires, but his primary interest was music. He won a scholarship to the Paris Conservatory, where he studied by day while playing piano in jazz clubs at night. He returned to Buenos Aires in 1956.

Gillespie, impressed when he heard Schifrin’s big band at a reception at the U.S. Embassy there, invited him to come to the United States.

He did, but not right away. In 1958, he obtained a green card and moved to New York, where he later reunited with Gillespie, working with him as a pianist, arranger and composer from 1960 to 1962. His first album as a member of the Gillespie band, “Gillespiana,” was devoted entirely to Schifrin’s acclaimed suite of the same name.

He also recorded several albums as a leader for the Verve label and wrote arrangements for Stan Getz, Sarah Vaughan and others.

Schifrin moved to Los Angeles in 1963. His first movie score was for a 1964 adventure film titled “Rhino!”

He won Grammy Awards for best original jazz composition for “The Cat” in 1965 and “Jazz Suite on the Mass Texts” in 1966. In 1968, his “Mission: Impossible” music won two Grammys, one for the theme and one for the soundtrack. His “Pampas” won a Latin Grammy in 2010 for best classical contemporary composition.

Schifrin was nominated for an Academy Award for his scores to six movies — “Cool Hand Luke” (1967), “The Fox” (1967), “Voyage of the Damned” (1967), “The Amityville Horror” (1979), “The Competition” (1980) and “The Sting II” (1983) — but never won. He did, however, receive an honorary Oscar in 2018. He was presented with the statuette by Eastwood, with whom he collaborated eight times.

In addition to his wife, whom he married in 1971, Schifrin is survived by their son, Ryan; a daughter, Frances Newcombe; a son, William Schifrin, from his marriage to Silvia Schon, which ended in divorce; and four grandchildren.

“I am proud of being eclectic,” Lalo Schifrin told Bruce Duffie, a Chicago radio host, in 1988. He added, “I don’t know why people have a tendency of putting labels, and thinking, for instance, classical music is something that belongs to a museum and jazz belongs to another kind of museum.”

A gentle yoga routine for low back pain

When your lower back hurts, your first instinct may be to take it easy or stay in bed. “It’s a very natural human reaction, but it’s not a good thing,” said Dr. Robert Saper, chair of the Wellness and Preventive Medicine department at Cleveland Clinic.

There’s rarely one identifiable cause for low back pain, which can make it difficult to treat. Muscle tightness and imbalances, wear and tear of the spinal discs and vertebrae, conditions like scoliosis and stress can all contribute to back pain.

But moving your body, in many cases, can help alleviate pain. A growing body of research suggests that yoga can be an effective way to reduce the intensity of chronic low back pain and make everyday movements more comfortable.

Many yoga poses help stretch and strengthen the muscles in the legs, hips, core and along the spine, which support the back, Saper said. Some poses can also help counteract muscular imbalances by moving your body through opposite movement patterns. The supported bridge pose in the routine below, for example, opens up the front of your body, which can offset the effects of sitting at a desk all day.

If you have lower back pain, props like blocks, a yoga strap or even a chair can help make poses more accessible, said Deborah Wolk, founder of Samamkaya Yoga Back Care and Scoliosis Collective in New York City, a studio that specializes in therapeutic yoga.

If you’ve had a serious or acute injury, check with your doctor before starting yoga. Move slowly in and out of each pose in the sequence below. Stop if you feel sudden, sharp pain in any pose, Saper said.

Overview

Time: 10-15 minutes

Intensity: Low

What you’ll need

— A yoga mat

— 3 yoga blocks

— A sturdy chair

— A blanket or towel

Corpse pose with a chair

Place a chair on your mat. Lie down and lift your legs onto the seat of the chair. Your feet and lower legs should be supported by the chair, with your thighs resting at an angle. Let your arms relax on the ground in any posi-

tion that is comfortable. This is a resting pose. Close your eyes and breathe deeply.

Windshield wipers

Lie on your back with your knees bent and your feet planted on the floor. Slowly rock sideto-side, letting your knees gently drop to the left and the right like windshield wipers. Lower your knees only as far as it feels comfortable.

Modify it: If there is more than a few inches of space between your lower back and the mat when lying down, place a rolled towel under your lower back. You can also put a towel under your head to help support your neck and upper back.

Knees-to-chest

Lie on your back with both knees bent and your feet flat on the floor. Lift your legs to bring your knees over your hips. Place your hands on the back of your thighs but don’t hug your knees toward your chest. Instead, let your legs be heavy in your hands. Your upper back should rest easily on the mat.

One-leg knee-to-chest

Lie on your back with both knees bent. Bring your right knee over your hip. Hold the back of your thigh with both hands. Keep your right shin and foot in line with your knee and hip. Hold for several breaths, then switch sides.

Downward facing hero’s pose

Kneel with your big toes close together and your knees apart. Bring your hips toward your heels. Place two blocks at the top of your mat, one on each side and approximately shoulder-width apart. Place a third block in the middle of your mat, to form a triangle. Tuck

a rolled towel against your lower abdomen. Fold your body over your thighs and rest your forehead on the center block. Reach your arms forward and rest your hands on the blocks at the top of the mat.

Modify it: Start with each block on its tallest height and adjust the height and position as needed. If you can’t sit back on your heels comfortably, place a folded towel between your bottom and your heels.

Mountain pose with a block

Place a yoga block lengthwise between your thighs, hugging it with your legs. Stand so that your weight feels evenly balanced and your head and shoulders are aligned over your pelvis. You should feel a gentle lift through your upper legs and along either side of your belly button.

Pyramid pose with a chair

Place a chair on your mat, with the back of the chair facing you, and stand an arm’s length away. Step your left foot backward and turn your foot so your toes are pointing slightly to the left. Align your hips and pelvis so they face forward. Straighten your legs and lift up through your lower abdomen. Bend forward at your hips and reach your hands in front of you and rest them on the back of the chair. Try to keep both sides of your ribs even with the floor. You can use the chair as a guide to position your torso. Keep your hands on the chair and lift your chest before switching sides.

If you have difficulty balancing, perform the pose with your back heel against a wall. You can also elevate your back heel slightly by placing a towel under it.

Supported bridge pose

Place a folded towel on the mat. Lie on the towel with your shoulders supported and your knees bent. Hug a block between your knees, keeping them hips-width distance apart. Press into your feet and stretch your knees away from your pelvis to lift your hips. Slide a block widthwise on its lowest height under your pelvis so it supports both sides evenly. Rest on the block. You should feel a gentle stretch in your back.

Modify it: If the block is too high, you can use a folded towel under your hips instead.

Modified corpse pose

Slide the rolled towel or cushion under your knees and lie on your back. Separate your legs wide and let your feet relax. Rest your arms alongside your body, with your palms facing the ceiling. Let your body sink into the mat. Close your eyes.

Completing a circuit to see the magic of Sardinia

Isaw the two women chatting as I entered the town. One was standing on the street in the shade of a low building; the other, an older lady dressed in black, was responding from her third-floor balcony. Together they formed a charming first impression of Cuglieri, a small commune I had passed through while driving along the western coast of the Italian island of Sardinia.

Nothing else was stirring on that sleepy Sunday afternoon in late September — until I bumped into three friends sitting on a bench: Antonio, Giovanni Maria and Renzo, their combined ages well over 200. I introduced myself and, when word got out that I’m half Sicilian, Antonio, the tallest gentleman, smiled and shouted: “Ah, anche tu isolana sei!” — So you’re an islander, too!

His exclamation encapsulated the separateness of life on Sardinia, which lies in the Mediterranean some 120 miles west of mainland Italy. To refer to the rest of country, locals here say “il continente” — the continent.

In other words: Those 120 miles might as well be an entire ocean.

My partner and I had formulated a simple plan: to fly to Sardinia’s capital, Cagliari, on the southern coast, rent a car and drive the perimeter of the island counterclockwise, following as many seaside roads as possible. We also wanted to swim, hike and visit some of the smaller islands off the coast. Sardinia has about 1,150 miles of shoreline, though not all of it is accessible.

The panoramic road between Cagliari and Villasimius is stunningly beautiful. It follows the sea almost religiously, passing through villages and, at times, bringing you within feet of the water.

After a restful night in Tortolì, having made it about halfway up the eastern side of the island, we allowed ourselves a little inland detour to walk up two gentle mountains: Monte Fumai (4,318 feet) and Monte Novo San Giovanni (4,285 feet), both within the Montes Forest area of the National Park of the Gulf of Orosei and Gennargentu. Since the trail began at around 3,300 feet, it was an easy and pleasant hike among spiky rocks, the only sounds coming from cowbells in the fields below.

Back on the coast, a short ride north took us to Cala Finanza, where we rented a kayak and paddled about 4 miles to Isola Tavolara, a small island near Sardinia’s northeast corner. Tavolara is long and narrow; its imposing limestone and granite cliff faces soar above the sea. When it first comes into view, it gives the impression of a huge tortoise carapace emerging from the water, or of the sail of a Spinosaurus.

This strange island has been the subject of many legends. According to one, Tavolara is the ship that the Phaeacians gave to Ulysses so he could return home — and that the angry Poseidon turned into stone. A NATO military base occupies part of the island, which shooed away the few remaining inhabitants in 1962. When we visited, only a few of the landowners were residing there part

time to handle the tourists.

Near Sardinia’s northernmost point, the Maddalena archipelago, with its heavenly crystal-clear waters and white-sand beaches, offers numerous trails among porous rocks and low shrubs — including the one we completed: a toasty 3-mile hike on the rocky island of Caprera, not far

from where Italian revolutionary hero Giuseppe Garibaldi spent the last 26 years of his life before he died in 1882. A drive westward at sunset led us to Porto Torres, where we boarded a one-hour ferry to Asinara, an irregularly shaped island — about 20 square miles in total — with no permanent residents. The island features dramatic cliffs, wide inlets and small beaches and is known for its population of shy wild dwarf albino donkeys, which we saw from a distance as we toured by e-bike.

Continuing the loop, and now southbound, we arrived at Capo Caccia, a headland within a regional natural park, for a short but demanding afternoon hike along towering cliffs. Staring at the waves as they crashed on the rocks was so mesmerizing that I returned at sunrise to watch them all over again.

Then came the colorful town of Bosa, set along the Temu River, the only navigable waterway in Sardinia, followed by a flurry of picturesque stops in the rolling hills of olive oil and Malvasia wine land: Modolo, Magomadas, Tresnuraghes, Sennariolo, our Cuglieri.

Carrying on southbound, we couldn’t help stopping along the Sinis Peninsula, a spit of land about halfway down Sardinia’s western coast. At its southernmost point is a track in a stunning location: the teardrop-shaped strip of land called Capo San Marco, with the sea on both sides, agitated on the west and calm on the east, and adjacent to the archaeological site of Tharros, a Phoenician trading town later occupied by Carthaginians and Romans.

From Portovesme, nearing the island’s southwestern corner, a ferry carried us to San Pietro Island, also known as Carloforte, the name of its only town. Carloforte is famous for the production of bottarga di tonno, the salted, cured and pressed eggs of Atlantic bluefin tuna. In the many local restaurants it’s possible to try tuna heart, tuna prosciutto and other tuna products — tuna eggs, salted tuna, tuna tartare, tuna pasta, grilled tuna and fatty tuna. As delicious as all of this sounds, and as sustainable as the local tuna fishery — in operation since 1654 — claims to be, the bluefin tuna population is dwindling worldwide.

San Pietro is a volcanic island and offers spectacular views of and from its imposing, crumbly cliffs. We reached a short hiking path, Geosito No. 5, by touring the 20-square-mile island on a rented scooter.

Our last day on Sardinia began quietly in the town of Calasetta’s small port, on the island of Sant’Antioco. From there we drove slowly back toward Cagliari along the southwestern coast, watching our last sunset from a small jewel of a beach, Porto Tramatzu, and then zigzagging on to Domus de Maria. The name — “Home of Maria” — reminded me of an album (“La buona novella”) by Fabrizio de André, an Italian singer and songwriter who had a touching relationship with Sardinia, his home and onetime prison.

And so we drove toward the end, the beginning, in a synaptic euphoria, through small towns and villages, sometimes just a handful of old houses scattered on a hill, split in two by the road.

JUAN ZULEIKA TORRES

Demandante Vs. ALVARO EUGENIO ENCARNACIÓN

Demandado

Civil Núm.: SJ2025RF00440. Sala: 704. Sobre: DIVORCIO (RUPTURA IRREPARABLE). SENTENCIA. Dave Parker, power hitter for the Pittsburgh Pirates, dies at 74

Dave Parker, a slugging outfielder nicknamed the Cobra who won a pair of National League batting titles, helped propel the Pittsburgh Pirates to the 1979 World Series championship and was belatedly elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame late last year, died Saturday in Cincinnati. He was 74. He was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2012. The Pirates confirmed Parker’s death on social media.

At 6-foot-5 and about 230 pounds, Parker was a feared lefthanded batter, hitting 339 home runs, driving in 1,493 runs and collecting 2,712 hits in his 19 major league seasons. He was a seven-time All-Star and displayed a rocket arm in right field, winning three Gold Glove awards.

In September 1985, while playing for the Cincinnati Reds, Parker testified in federal court in Pittsburgh that during his time with the Pirates, he arranged cocaine transactions between a Pittsburgh man and some of his teammates, along with some players for the Houston Astros and the Los Angeles Dodgers. He said he used cocaine from 1976-82.

“I stopped using in the late part of ’82,” Parker testified under a grant of immunity from prosecution. “I felt my game was slipping and I feel it played some part in it.”

In his 15 years on the sports writers ballot for the Hall of Fame, which requires 75% of the votes for induction, Parker never received more than 24.5%.

He subsequently missed out three times in balloting by veterans committees that consider outstanding players whose eligibility on the writers ballots had expired. But in December, he was finally elected when he was named on 14 of the 16 ballots of the Classic Baseball Era Committee, surpassing the necessary 75% threshold.

Dick Allen, who played first base for the Phillies, was elected by the same committee, receiving 13 votes.

In a Zoom conference with reporters after his election was announced, Parker was asked if he had envisioned himself as a Hall of Famer.

“Without a doubt,” he said. “‘When the leaves turned brown, I’d be wearing the batting crown.’ That was one of my sayings, so I always thought that I was going to be a major

leaguer. I told my mother at 8 years old that I would be a baseball star and one day buy her a house. Well, I did that in ’78. I got that done.”

Parker and Allen, who died in 2020, will be inducted into the Hall of Fame on July 27 during the annual ceremony in Cooperstown, New York. They will be joined by Ichiro Suzuki, Billy Wagner and CC Sabathia, who were elected by the writers.

In a tribute to Parker, Jane Clark Forbes, chair of the Hall of Fame, said, “His legacy will be one of courage and leadership, matched only by his outstanding accomplishments on the field.”

Parker’s physique was matched by his outsize personality.

He teased his teammates in the clubhouse, loudly insisted they play hard, wore a diamond stud in his left ear and adorned his neck with chains. He was known as the Cobra for his batwaving while awaiting a pitch and his quick swing.

“About 95% of the verbalizing in the clubhouse is done by me,” Parker told The New York Times in 1980. “I can challenge anybody and get away with it. I’m a big part of the offensive attack of this club and its main motivator. They say I’m the Ali of baseball. That puts a lot of pressure on me, but I’ll take it.”

“You hear him screaming, slamming his bat,” Harding Peterson, vice president of the Pirates, said at the time. “People sometimes think he’s a tough guy with a big mouth, shooting it off. They get the wrong impression. If I was in a war, I’d share a foxhole with Dave Parker. He’s not going to fall asleep or run off when the going gets tough.”

Parker signed a five-year contract, baseball’s most lucrative deal at the time, before the 1979 season, when he was coming off his second consecutive batting title and the MVP award. The contract was valued at between $1 million and $2 million a year, depending on bonuses and inflation, according to the Times.

He teamed with future Hall of Fame first baseman Willie Stargell in leading the “We Are Family” Pirates, who adopted the Sister Sledge disco hit as their anthem, to the 1979 National League pennant and a seven-game World Series triumph over the Baltimore Orioles.

But Parker had a chronically sore left knee, leaving his longterm outlook uncertain, and Pittsburgh was a blue-collar city whose workers were concerned about their own future, so Pirates fans were regarded as hardly thrilled at the size of his contract.

At 6-foot-5 and about 230 pounds, Dave Parker was a feared left-handed batter, hitting 339 home runs, driving in 1,493 runs and collecting 2,712 hits in his 19 major league seasons. He won back-to-back National League batting titles, helped propel the Pittsburgh Pirates to the 1979 World Series championship and was belatedly elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame late last year. trade him, saying, “I’ve reached the point of no return.”

The Pirates were not about to let him go, but after 11 years in Pittsburgh, his five-year deal having expired, Parker signed a free-agent contract with the Cincinnati Reds before the 1984 season. He was runner-up for the National League’s MVP award, behind Willie McGee of the St. Louis Cardinals, in 1985.

Parker played for Oakland, mostly as a designated hitter, in 1988 and 1989, and drove in 97 runs in his second season with the A’s, when they swept the San Francisco Giants in the earthquake-interrupted 1989 World Series.

He later played for the Milwaukee Brewers, the California Angels and the Toronto Blue Jays, then retired after the 1991 season.

David Gene Parker was born June 9, 1951, in Grenada, Mississippi, one of six children of Richard and Dannie Mae Parker. His family moved to Cincinnati when he was a child, and his father worked there for a company that manufactured valves.

Parker reported receiving hate mail and said the tires on his two Mercedes vehicles were slashed.

During the first game of a July 1980 doubleheader at Three Rivers Stadium when Willie Stargell Day was celebrated, a fan threw a 9-volt battery at Parker during the eighth inning of the opener, narrowly missing his head, while he stood in right field.

He took himself out of the game and soon afterward asked the Pirates to

Parker was a standout high school football player, but a knee injury ended his hopes of playing in college. He was, however, a power-hitting catcher on the baseball team and the Pirates selected him in the 14th round of the 1970 amateur draft.

He made his debut with Pittsburgh in July 1973 and became an everyday player two years later.

Parker retired with a career batting average of .290. He led the National League in hits (215) with the 1977 Pirates, in RBIs (125) with the 1985 Reds, in total bases three times and in doubles twice.

He was later a coach for the California Angels and the St. Louis Cardinals.

Parker’s survivors include his wife, Kellye Crockett Parker, and six children.

After he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s, Parker and his wife started the Dave Parker 39 Foundation (a reference to his jersey number) to raise funds for research into the disease.

“I didn’t know anything about the disease until I got it,” Parker told The Kansas City Star in 2019. “I went home and read about it, and decided to get involved.”
