District 14 (Arecibo and Hatillo) Rep. Edgar Robles Rivera has filed House Joint Resolution (HJR) 106, with which “we seek to formalize the acceptance of licenses and vehicle registrations in digital format, issued through the official CESCO Digital platform, by agents of the Puerto Rico Police Bureau.”
“The responsible and efficient use of technology is essential to modernize our public services and facilitate citizen compliance,” said the chairman of the Consumer Affairs Committee in the island House of Representatives. “The measure reinforces everyone’s commitment to the correct use of electronic tools.”
The legislator noted that the CESCO Digital platform is part of the technological modernization efforts of the Puerto Rico government, thus allowing citizens to have agile and secure access to fines, licenses, license plates and vehicle registrations from their mobile devices.
Digitization promotes efficiency and convenience, while providing law enforcement officers with an up-to-date tool to verify information in real time during traffic interventions, Robles Rivera noted.

Shareholders of four Puerto Rico tax-exempt closed-ended funds, with a combined total of some $187 million in net assets, will soon vote on whether to liquidate the funds. The development follows a protracted legal dispute involving investment banking company UBS, according to Fidelity.
The funds posted notices last week to the Securities and Exchange Commission’s EDGAR site notifying shareholders that the funds’ boards are recommending liquidation. It is unclear whether dates have been set for the shareholder votes on liquidation.
mittee, also establishes that the commissioner of the Puerto Rico Police Bureau must report to the Legislative Assembly on the steps taken to comply with the directive, within a term of no more than 15 days after its approval.
The funds in question are Tax Free Fund for Puerto Rico Residents Inc., Puerto Rico Residents Tax-Free Fund Inc., Puerto Rico Residents Tax-Free Fund IV Inc., and Puerto Rico Residents Tax-Free Fund VI. The funds had been managed by UBS Asset Managers of Puerto Rico until July 19, after which Atlas Asset Management took over, as reported by Fidelity.
For each fund to liquidate its holdings, holders of most of the shares in the fund must approve the action.
Puerto Rico-based investment fund Ocean Capital has been struggling with UBS for several years to change the funds’ directors. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit ruled in Ocean
Capital’s favor in one case in May, Fidelity reported.
Tax Free Fund for Puerto Rico Residents had $50.4 million in net assets as of Dec. 31, 2024. Of this, 30.4% were Puerto Rico Sales Tax Financing Corp. (COFINA) bonds and 12.4% were United States municipal bonds, the report said.
Puerto Rico Residents Tax-Free Fund had $26 million in net assets as of Aug. 31, 2024, of which 57% was COFINA, 13% was other U.S. municipal bonds and 0.3% was other Puerto Rico municipal bonds.
Puerto Rico Residents Tax-Free Fund IV had $106.6 million in net assets, with 36% being for Puerto Rico municipal bonds and 5.4% for U.S. municipal bonds.
Puerto Rico Residents Tax-Free Fund VI had $4 million in net assets as of Sept. 30, 2024, with 42% in COFINA bonds and 30% in U.S. municipal bonds.
A significant portion of Puerto Rico residents who invest in the island’s municipal bonds do so through closed-ended funds. UBS continues to manage several Puerto Rico-based municipal bond funds, including both closed-ended and open-ended funds.
Ocean Capital has directors running three of the funds, with the exception of Puerto Rico Residents Tax-Free Fund VI, Fidelity reported.

In light of the accumulating cases of femicide, Gov. Jenniffer González Colón on Sunday urged victims to seek help and speak out instead of suffering in silence. She confirmed that the Justice Department, the police and the Department of Education are actively implementing initiatives to address such cases and provide support to prevent further violence.
González Colón’s remarks came in the wake of last Thursday’s stabbing death of a 30-year-old psychologist in Vega Alta at the hands of her longtime partner. The couple were the parents of a young son, who was asleep in their residence at the time of the slaying. It was the island’s 12th reported case of femicide this year.
“The first step is to seek help. When a woman is in a cycle of violence, she cannot remain silent because this is how tragedies happen,” the governor said. “The murders we see are often the result of recurring conflicts. Don’t wait for the second or third incident; ask for help. There is a dedicated anonymous hotline available. Through the justice secretary’s office, women can call for guidance on how to proceed. We are also establishing support networks at home. We should not wait until it’s too late and our children witness such violence.”
González Colón added that the Justice
Department and its Office for Women are intensifying their efforts and allocating more resources to address relationship violence cases as they arise. The Puerto Rico Police are also upgrading the facilities where victims of violence are received “to ensure they do not have to report their cases in a barracks, providing a more supportive environment for filing complaints,” she said.
“Additionally, I am looking for long-term solutions,” the governor continued. “Starting this semester in August, a mandatory course on emotion management will be introduced in all higher education institutions in Puerto
Rico. This initiative provides our youth with the tools needed to channel emotions related to anger, violence, or attachment issues. This is the first time Puerto Rico has taken such a proactive approach to prevent future violence.”
“By equipping our youth with these skills in schools, we can break the cycle of violence that often perpetuates from one generation to the next,” González Colón said. “Studies show that if someone experiences violence at home, they are likely to repeat it. Therefore, we must stop this cycle early on. This initiative will also encourage youth to interact with their parents and seek help together.”
She emphasized “the importance of reaching out for help” for victims of domestic violence or emotional abuse, and relayed the hotline number for doing so: 722-2977.
“Tragically, the lifeless body of Keyshla Marie Rivera Ocasio, a 30-year-old psychologist dedicated to working with children with special needs, was discovered last week at her home on Orquídea Street in the Ranchos Nativos area of Candelaria,” the governor said in reference to last Thursday’s events in Vega Alta. “The scene was heartbreaking, with a knife found embedded in her heart, signaling a violent end to her life.”
The woman’s partner, Argenis Carrión Santos, a 33-year-old veteran of the Armed Forces, dialed 911 at 3:55 a.m. to report the horrific event, confessing to the slaying in a calm and collected manner, the governor noted in a press
release. At the time of the tragic incident, the couple’s year-and-a-half-old son was asleep in a separate room. The child was later taken into temporary custody by the Department of Family Affairs for his safety.
Authorities revealed that Carrión Santos was already waiting for law enforcement officers on the ground floor of the residence, ready to share the details of his actions, which were recorded on the officers’ body cameras. Additionally, he left a handwritten note in the bathroom in which he admitted to the crime and expressed his heartfelt wishes for their son to be cared for by his grandmother.
After committing the femicide, Carrión Santos attempted, unsuccessfully, to take his own life using a second kitchen knife, resulting in self-inflicted injuries to his forearm, wrist and thigh, according to reports. After receiving the necessary medical treatment, he was released from the hospital and booked into the Bayamón Correctional Facility on Saturday night after being unable to pay bail of $1.5 million on three counts of first-degree murder, and possession and use of a knife.
According to the police report, Carrión Santos and Rivera Ocasio had had an argument over alleged infidelity on the part of Carrión Santos. In the incident, Carrión Santos used the kitchen knife to kill Rivera Ocasio. Judge Juan Portel Maldonado of the Bayamón Court scheduled a preliminary hearing for Aug. 8.

The central government and New Fortress Energy have extended to Aug. 1 the contract for the supplying of liquefied natural gas (LNG) to 14 temporary units at the Palo Seco and San Juan electric power plants in Toa Baja and Puerto Nuevo, respectively.
The original contract, which was approved with observations by the Financial Oversight and Management Board on July 17, stems from an exigency declared by Genera PR, the private operator of the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority generation plants, on July 16 due to an emergency need for the provision of LNG.
Genera indicated that the exigency was prompted by delays in the request for proposal process for a provider of LNG, the current reserve margin, the risk posed by the hurricane season, and the need for immediate action to alleviate and/or avoid serious harm, financial or otherwise, according to a July 25 letter from the
The original contract has the same terms and conditions as the previous contract for the provision of LNG, which expired on July 11. It contemplates the purchase of British thermal units of LNG at a price determined by the formula (1-0.27) x diesel price/5.8. It has a maximum payable amount of $9.7 million and a term from its date of execution of July 17 to July 25, 2025 at 5 p.m.
The proposed amendment, which constitutes the first amendment to the contract, increases the maximum payable amount by $6.4 million to $16.2 million, and extends the term to Aug. 1, 2025 at 5 p.m.
Genera has certified that the expenses related to the proposed amendment constitute a passthrough expenditure with no budgetary impact, and the funds to pay for the proposed amendment are unrestricted, unobligated and available without future encumbrances or restrictions, and will not be obligated except for the payment of the proposed amendment.

Leaders of the New Progressive Party (NPP) convened on Sunday at the Santa María Magdalena de Pazzis Cemetery in Old San Juan to mark the 168th anniversary of the birth of Dr. José Celso Barbosa, the founding father of the statehood movement in Puerto Rico.
They made a strong call for the relentless pursuit of statehood. Bayamón Mayor Ramón Luis Rivera Cruz underscored the necessity of following Barbosa’s model to bring about monumental historical changes.
“Let me be clear: the most vital message from Barbosa’s legacy is that with courage, determination, empathy, and a commitment to social justice, we can enact significant changes in history, just as he did,” the veteran NPP leader declared. “By adopting this mindset, we can reshape the future of Puerto Rico -- not only in political terms but in every facet of life. The principles of determination, hard work, courage, education, empathy, and social justice are our pathways to achieving the changes we desire.”
The leaders rejected claims that Congress is in no mood to grant statehood to Puerto Rico.
Gov. Jenniffer González Colón took a firm stance against Resident Commissioner Pablo José Hernández Rivera, president of the Popular Democratic Party [PDP], for his remarks urging supporters to abandon “timidity, cowardice, and ignorance” in defending the current political status. Hernández Rivera has claimed the commonwealth status is the sole viable alternative, citing statehood’s supposed impossibility and the undesirability of independence.
“I perceive a defeatist attitude in him -- one marked by conformity, complacency, and an inferiority complex,” the governor said. “For far too long, the leadership of the Popular Party has tried to impose this mindset on Puerto Rico: that we, as Puerto Ricans, are somehow incapable, that only a select few can study abroad as he did, while opportunities are unjustly denied to those of us who live and thrive here, hailing from public schools or parents who are teachers, firefighters, police officers, or secretaries.”
“This dismissive attitude from the Commissioner, who blatantly ignores the overwhelming mandate from the people of Puerto Rico, is unacceptable,” González Colón continued. “I remind him that statehood secured more votes than he did and more than any other politician or party in Puerto Rico. With over 58% of the vote, statehood undeniably represents an absolute majority. Yet he chooses to acknowledge his own votes while disregarding those for statehood. What a contradiction! His votes matter, but those for statehood do not?”
“A leader who disrespects the electorate and disregards the will of the people cannot be trusted with the responsibility of representing our island,” she insisted. “As governor, I am committed to addressing the demands of every citizen on this island. While there are issues I may disagree with, I will always uphold the mandate of the people of Puerto Rico. The people are sovereign.”
The governor reiterated that Hernández Rivera “refuses to accept a clear mandate that has been established not once, but four times.”
On the 168th anniversary of the birth of Dr. José Celso Barbosa, the founding father of the statehood movement in Puerto Rico, Gov. Jenniffer González Colón joined other New Progressive Party leaders in rejecting claims that Congress is in no mood to grant statehood to to the U.S. island territory.
“We have held four plebiscites, four votes. Puerto Rico has exercised its right to vote, clearly demanding equality and statehood,” she said. “Yet, he stubbornly ignores the results because they do not align with his preferences. This reflects the narrow-minded mentality some Puerto Ricans exhibit, rooted in feelings of inferiority.”
“I reject any notion of inferiority, and [so] should Puerto Ricans,” González Colón said. “We are capable of greatness, which is precisely why I am determined to see the statehood of Puerto Rico become a reality. … “His [the resident commis-

Three adults and three minors suffered burns from a lightning strike at about 12:24 p.m. on Sunday at the Seven Seas beach resort in Fajardo.
According to the authorities’ report, a call was received through the 9-1-1 Emergency System alerting dispatchers about the incident. When the agents arrived at the scene, three adults and three minors, residents of San Lorenzo and Gurabo, were treated by paramedics from Emergency Management of Fajardo, Juncos and ICARE Solutions for burns in different parts of the body resulting from an electric shock caused by lightning while they were in the water.
The victims were transported to area hospitals and their condition was described as stable.
sioner’s] refusal to honor the will of the people sends a clear message: he does not represent or respect us. He is unwilling to embrace differing viewpoints, which is a dangerous mindset for anyone purporting to serve as a representative of Puerto Rico in Congress.”
During a speech late last week commemorating the anniversary of the Constitution of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, Hernández Rivera noted that statehood is an “impossible” alternative, while independence, although available, “Puerto Ricans overwhelmingly reject.”
“We must restore the autonomy that was put on hold with the passage of the PROMESA Law,” he said, referring to the Puerto Rico Oversight, Management and Economic Stability Act. “Until this happens, any debate about status is futile.”
During his speech last Thursday, the resident commissioner quoted urban singer Bad Bunny.
“I want the United States to drink coffee in the morning and rum in the afternoon … precisely because what happened to Hawaii did not happen to Puerto Rico, nor will it ever happen to it,” Hernández Rivera said in his speech.
“Today I want us to chart together a new path for the future and for the change of Puerto Rican autonomism,” he said, highlighting that autonomism has been the only ideological movement that has achieved concrete results in favor of self-government.
The PDP president acknowledged that autonomism has suffered setbacks, but defended its historic achievements. “Every advance, every achievement, every accomplishment of self-government by this people has been thanks to the realistic and pragmatic vision of Puerto Rican autonomists,” he said.

OK, so President Donald Trump’s name is in the Jeffrey Epstein files. But who put it there? Could it possibly have been Barack Obama from his prison cell? Or a tranquilized Hillary Clinton? Oh wait, maybe it was etched onto the documents by Joe Biden’s magical autopen.
Or is that mixing up different scandals? It’s so hard to keep up with the latest wild notions circulating in the capital and beyond. Washington is awash in conspiracy theories these days, a cascade of suspicion and intrigue promoted or denied in the Oval Office, ricocheting around Capitol Hill and cable news and propelled at warp speed across social media.
No commander in chief in his lifetime has been as consumed by conspiracy theories as Trump, and now they seem to be consuming him. They have been the rocket fuel for his political career since the days when he spread the lie that Obama was secretly born overseas and therefore not eligible to be president. More than a decade later, Trump is coming full circle by trying to divert attention from the Epstein conspiracy theory with a new-and-improved one about Obama supposedly committing treason.
The harmonic convergence of competing conspiracies has overshadowed critical policy issues facing America’s leaders at the moment, whether it’s new tariffs that could dramatically reshape the global economy or the collapse of ceasefire talks meant to end the war in the Gaza Strip. The Epstein matter so spooked Speaker Mike Johnson that he abruptly recessed the House for the summer rather than confront it. The allegations lodged against Obama so outraged the former president that he emerged from political hibernation to express his indignation at even having to address them.
The whispers and questions — “this nonsense,” as Trump put it — followed the president all the way to Scotland, where he landed Friday for a visit to his golf club.
“You’re making a very big thing over something that’s not a big thing,” he complained to reporters, suggesting, in his latest bid at conspiracy deflection, that instead of him, the news media should be looking at Epstein’s other boldface friends like former President Bill Clinton. “Don’t talk about Trump,” he said.
Conspiracy theories have a long place in American history. Many Americans still believe that someone else had a hand in killing President John F. Kennedy, that the moon landings were faked, that the 9/11 terrorist attacks were an inside job or that the government is hiding proof of extraterrestrial visitors in Roswell, New Mexico. Sixty-five percent of Americans told Gallup pollsters in 2023 that they think there was a conspiracy behind Kennedy’s assassination.
Some conspiracy theories do turn out to be true, of course, or have some basis. But presidents generally have not been the ones spreading dubious stories. To the contrary, they traditionally have viewed their role as dispelling

doubts and reinforcing faith in institutions. President Lyndon B. Johnson created the Warren Commission to investigate his predecessor’s murder specifically to keep rumors and guesswork from proliferating. (Spoiler alert: It didn’t.)
Trump, by contrast, relishes conspiracy theories, particularly those that benefit him or smear his enemies without any evident care for whether they are true or not. “There have been other conspiratorial political movements in the country’s past,” said Geoff Dancy, a University of Toronto professor who teaches about conspiracy theories. “But they have never occupied the upper echelons of power until the last decade.”
Conspiracy theories are not the exclusive preserve of Trump and the political right. Around the time of last month’s anniversary of the assassination attempt against Trump in Butler, Pennsylvania, some on the left once again advanced the notion that the whole shooting episode had been staged to make the Republican candidate into a political martyr.
Trump, however, has stirred the plot pot more than any other major political figure. In the six months since retaking office, he has remained remarkably cavalier about suggesting nefarious schemes even as he heads the government supposedly orchestrating some of them.
He suggested the nation’s gold reserves at Fort Knox might be missing, resurrecting a decades-old fringe supposition, even though he would presumably be in position to know whether that was actually true, what with being president and all. “If the gold isn’t there, we’re going to be very upset,” he told reporters.
It fell to Scott Bessent, the decidedly nonconspiratorial Treasury secretary, to burst the bubble and reassure Americans that, no, the nation’s reserves had not been stolen. “All the gold is present and accounted for,” he told an interviewer.
Trump has played to long-standing suspicions by ordering the release of hundreds of thousands of pages of documents related to the assassinations of Kennedy, his
brother Robert F. Kennedy and the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., an act of transparency for historians and researchers that may shed important light on those episodes.
But Trump has gone beyond simple theory floating to make his own alternate reality official government policy. Some applicants for jobs in the second Trump administration were asked whether Trump won the 2020 election that he actually lost; those who gave the wrong answer were not helping their job prospects, forcing those rooted in facts to decide whether to swallow the fabrication to gain employment.
Trump has likewise claimed that Biden was so diminished toward the end of his term that his aides signed pardons without his knowledge using an autopen. Biden was certainly showing signs of age, but the autopen story was conjecture. Asked if he had uncovered proof, Trump said, “I uncovered, you know, the human mind. I was in a debate with the human mind and I didn’t think he knew what the hell he was doing.”
The past week or so has seen a fusillade of Trumpian conspiracy theories, seemingly meant to focus attention away from the Epstein case. Tulsi Gabbard, the president’s politically appointed intelligence chief, trotted out inflammatory allegations that Obama orchestrated a “yearslong coup and treasonous conspiracy” by skewing the 2016 election interference investigation — despite the conclusions of a Republican-led Senate report signed by none other than Marco Rubio, now Trump’s secretary of state. She also claimed that Hillary Clinton was “on a daily regimen of heavy tranquilizers” during the 2016 campaign.
Relying on this, Trump accused Obama of “treason,” suggesting he should be locked up and going so far as to post a fake video showing his predecessor being handcuffed in the Oval Office and put behind bars. The idea of a president posting such an image of another president would once have been seen as a shocking breach of etiquette and corruption of the justice system, but in the Trump era it has become simply business as usual.
For all that, the conspiracy theorist in chief has not been able to shake the Epstein case, which reflects the rise of the QAnon movement that believes America is run by a cabal of Satan-worshipping pedophiles. Most of the files, the ones that his attorney general told him include his name, remain unreleased, bringing together an unlikely alliance of MAGA conservatives and liberal Democrats.
It was well known that Trump was friends with Epstein, although they later fell out. So it’s not clear what his name being in the files might actually mean. But Trump is not one to back down. Asked last week about whether he had been told his name was in the files, Trump again pointed the finger of conspiracy elsewhere.
“These files were made up by Comey,” he told reporters, referring to James Comey, the FBI director he had fired more than two years before Epstein died in prison in 2019. “They were made up by Obama,” he went on. “They were made up by the Biden administration.”
The theories are endless.

Joe Kennedy III, the former Democratic member of Congress from Massachusetts, gazed out his window at endless fields of cotton and soybeans as he drove across the Mississippi Delta one sweltering afternoon last month. He was a long way from home, but in a sense returning to it.
“People living here have been receiving boil-water notices for two years now,” he said, using an expletive. “We should be banging the drums on this every day.”
Kennedy, 44, was retracing the steps of his grandfather, Robert F. Kennedy, the former attorney general and candidate for president, who toured the Delta in 1967 and encountered the kind of hunger and poverty more often associated with the developing world. “Those images Bobby took away of children with bloated stomachs and open sores had a huge impact on him,” said Evan Thomas, a biographer of both the elder Kennedy and his brother, President John F. Kennedy.
Kennedy nodded to the history. “I know a bit about my grandfather’s visit to the Delta back in the ’60s, and how it changed and outraged him to see this in the richest country in the world,” he said. “I’m proud that my family has spent a lot of their years in office advocating for these people.”
Kennedy is on a mission to continue the legacy of an American political family that has in recent years lost some of its liberal luster. It angers him that his uncle Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the health and human services secretary, is a key figure in an administration that is overturning core values of his family.
The health secretary has defended work requirements for Medicaid recipients, “which do not work,” the younger Kennedy said. “The only thing they succeed at is kicking people off Medicaid who need it.”
On the elder Kennedy’s efforts to ban food dyes, his nephew dismissively replied, “It’s not the dyes that are making people obese.”
Still, he shares with his uncle the belief that Democrats are increasingly captive to an urban elite. “I think the Democratic Party has lost touch with this reality,” he said, staring out at the Delta landscape.
Kennedy’s response is not to run for president as his grandfather did and his uncle might, or at least not yet.
Instead he has formed the Groundwork Project, a nonprofit that seeks to develop a network of grassroots resistance in four deepred states — Mississippi, Alabama, Oklahoma
and West Virginia — that have received little attention from left-leaning organizations. Without any meaningful opposition, Kennedy said, those states have become havens for right-wing initiatives, ranging from the evisceration of the Clean Air Act in West Virginia to legislation in Mississippi that banned abortions after 15 weeks and led to the Supreme Court’s decision overturning Roe v. Wade.
“The only way to change the power structures in those states is to organize people,” Kennedy said. “That’s not a short fix. But what else can you do?”
The slow grind of organization-building in hostile territory that Kennedy envisions has been done before, mostly by conservative groups like Americans for Prosperity, which was formed in 2004, operates in 35 states and has an annual operating budget of more than $186 million. In contrast, the Groundwork Project operates on a relatively modest $2.8 million a year, much of it disbursed as $25,000 annual grants to about 40 local groups that have fought uphill battles in areas like environmental justice and reproductive rights.
The Oral History of Family Lore
Kennedy was not yet born when Sen. Robert F. Kennedy’s quest for the presidency was cut short by an assassin’s bullet in California in June 1968. The 42-year-old candidate left behind his widow, Ethel, and their 11 children, among them Robert Jr. and Joseph, Joe Kennedy III’s father, who would go on to serve in Congress from 1987 to 1999.
Kennedy said that he has never read a book about his grandfather, since from infancy he marinated in the oral history of family lore. Inculcated in him were RFK adages such as, “The gross national product can tell us everything about America except why we are proud that we are Americans.”
His own trajectory followed the meticulously laid Kennedy path of public service merging with political advancement. He spent his childhood in Boston before attending Stanford University and subsequently serving two years in the Dominican Republic as a Peace Corps volunteer. He returned home to Massachusetts, graduated from Harvard Law School and then worked as an assistant district attorney in Middlesex County.
It came as little surprise in February 2012 when he announced his desire to fill the congressional seat soon to be vacated by Rep. Barney Frank. Kennedy — an earnest and energetic 31-year-old scion with a genetically distinctive aquiline nose, a toothy grin and wavy red hair that deviated from the family’s
physical template — coasted to victory without serious opposition.
The freshman won over many colleagues in the House, several of whom said in interviews that they had been braced for an entitled brat and instead encountered someone who was thoughtful and unpretentious. He set out to lead on mental health issues as his cousin, Patrick Kennedy, had done before retiring from Congress in 2011. But Kennedy said he grew dismayed by the chamber’s partisan divisions and inexplicable lethargy, recalling, “Even in the majority, I couldn’t move my own bills.”
By Kennedy’s fourth term, restlessness had gotten the better of him. In September 2019, he announced his candidacy for the Senate, a body in which three Kennedy legends — his grandfather; his great-uncle, the former president; and his great-uncle Ted — had previously served. He garnered the support of Rep. Nancy Pelosi, the Democrat who was then the minority leader.
But the 73-year-old Democratic incumbent, Sen. Edward J. Markey, outfoxed his younger opponent by recasting himself as a rabble-rousing progressive in the manner of Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, who endorsed Markey. Kennedy, whose tendency is to speak in carefully constructed paragraphs, struggled to come up with his own pithy pitch to voters.
Markey won the September 2020 primary by 11 points, and Kennedy became the first in his family to be defeated in a senatorial contest. President Donald Trump gloated on Twitter, “Pelosi strongly backed the loser!”
‘You Democrats Think We Don’t Know How to Work?’
Rejected by progressive activists, Kennedy turned to forgotten agrarian lands like the Mississippi Delta, which has only one major city (Jackson), and is therefore difficult to organize. It’s “what I call a hard-to-fight state,” said Charles Taylor, the executive director of Mississippi’s NAACP chapter.
Similar impediments exist in Oklahoma, where Republican legislators have passed severe restrictions on abortion and on what can be taught in public school classrooms about racism.
Alabama, a third Groundwork Project state, benefits from a more urban population than Oklahoma or Mississippi. But Democratic get-out-the-vote organizers have been reluctant to operate in a state where there is no in-person early voting and where absentee ballots must be signed by a notary or two voting-age witnesses.
Joe Kennedy III, the former Democratic congressman from Massachusetts, and grandson of Bobby Kennedy, in New York on July 22, 2025. Kennedy, 44, has recently retraced the steps of his grandfather, who toured the Mississippi Delta in 1967 and encountered the kind of hunger and poverty more often associated with the developing world. “I’m proud that my family has spent a lot of their years in office advocating for these people.”
(Karsten Moran/The New York Times)
West Virginia is by far the most challenging for Kennedy. Its overwhelmingly rural and white population was long Democratic, but the collapse of the coal and steel industries in the state have spawned a profound distrust of party elites, Kennedy said. He recalled a visit to West Virginia just after he founded the Groundwork Project, when a bearded young man asked him, “How come you Democrats think we don’t know how to work?”
To every such question, Kennedy’s implicit answer was to organize. “I think Mississippi has so much to teach our nation about resilience, never losing focus and not giving up when your government is actively working against you,” he said at an event in Indianola.
Kennedy is applying the same calm resolve to his own political future. He and his wife, Lauren Birchfield Kennedy, an attorney and children’s advocate, have a 6-year-old son and a 9-year-old daughter. Kennedy laments having missed so much of their infancy while serving in Washington.
“The question is, is what I would get out of going back into elective office worth the sacrifice that I asked my family to go through again?”
For now, Kennedy is content to leave the question unanswered. “I’m 44,” he said. “And at some point down the road, I wouldn’t necessarily rule anything out.”

Israel’s war in Gaza is not a genocide. It is a war for a just cause, the elimination of a cruel, fanatical, itself potentially genocidal terrorist organization that oppresses its own people, holds innocent hostages and will pose a severe danger to the state of Israel so long as it holds power.
The war’s heartbreaking civilian toll is inextricably linked to that terrorist government’s refusal to obey the laws of war, its unwillingness to surrender no matter how much its own people suffer, its willingness to accept famine rather than give up control of humanitarian aid, its inclination to let ceasefire negotiations spin endlessly in the apparent hope that international pressure will save it from defeat.
But despite all these realities, despite the fundamental responsibility that Hamas bears for all the horrors of the conflict it initiated on Oct. 7, 2023, Israel’s war-making at this moment is unjust.
One can have a righteous cause, one’s foe can be wicked and brutal and primarily responsible for the conflict’s toll, and still — under any coherent theory of just war — there is an obligation to refrain from certain tactics if they create too much collateral damage, to mitigate certain predictable forms of civilian suffering and to have a strategy that makes
the war’s outcome worth the cost.
These are tests that Israel is failing. The first one is the hardest to assess, because every protracted war yields inevitable civilian suffering, and an urban war against an entrenched enemy especially will have cruelties that can’t be refined away. Such a war cannot be fought exclusively with precision strikes, the soldiers fighting it cannot be prevented from making terrible mistakes, and war crimes are inevitably committed even in righteous conflicts. So there is no way to look at the rubble in Gaza and the death toll estimates and offer a mathematical proof that Israel is failing to exercise adequate restraint. I just think it’s true.
because part of the justice of a war depends on whether you have a reasonable plan for peace.
Deaths from famine are a clearer matter, which is why the threat of starvation is leading even some of Israel’s strongest supporters to warn its government that something must be changed. Here, Israel has made a strategic choice, trying to separate food distribution from a system that it argues Hamas was exploiting for its own purposes. But if your strategic choice leads to children dying of starvation when the food is available to feed them, then a civilized nation has to make a different choice — even if that makes things easier for its enemies to some degree.
That kind of plan still seems absent nearly two years into the Gaza war. I am respectful of the fog of war and open to the possibility that a decent outcome will emerge. Perhaps there really is a tipping point in Hamas’ degradation beyond which it will be unable to reconstitute itself, at which point a multilateral, Arab-led approach to rebuilding Gaza will become a realistic option. Perhaps the second-order effects of Israel’s blows against Hezbollah and Iran are opening up diplomatic options that have not yet been fully exploited.

It’s true that this kind of argument assumes the importance of moral limits that the United States, in its wars with barbarous enemies, has not always observed. I recommend my recent podcast conversation with my New York Times colleague Bret Stephens for a longer discussion on these points, but suffice it to say I do think that certain things America did in World War II were intrinsically immoral, including the firebombing of Dresden and the use of the atomic bomb against Japanese population centers. And obviously not everyone agrees with this perspective. The idea that a civilized nation must set aside a weapon that might help to end a war, especially against a fanatical enemy that shows few signs of moving toward a normal sort of surrender, is one that most Americans fighting World War II would have understandably rejected.
But this brings around the third way that Israel’s war-making seems currently unjust. It wasn’t certain that America’s total-war strategy against Nazi Germany and imperial Japan would bring that conflict to a stable, peaceful ending, but the fact that it did so helped vindicate American policymakers
But right now, if I were predicting an endgame for the struggle, it would involve Israel finally stepping back in exhaustion, cordoning off the Gaza Strip again, watching bloody power struggles play out in an isolated Gaza and accepting that some kind of terrorist threat will be harbored there for years to come.
If that’s the outcome, then fighting on for another year to end up there is an unjust waste of life. Alternatively, if there is a path from today’s death toll to tomorrow’s lasting peace, then Israel needs its friends to see it and believe in it — and soon.

Chuck Mangione, whose limpid flugelhorn ruled the upper reaches of Billboard’s adult contemporary charts in the 1970s and ’80s with a culture-permeating lilt that helped create the genre known as “smooth jazz,” died last Tuesday at his home in Rochester, New York. He was 84.
His death was confirmed by his family in a statement, which did not specify a cause.
Mangione was a true pop star with an instantly recognizable signature silhouette: bewhiskered, his long hair crowned by a turned-down felt fedora. He was nominated 14 times for Grammy Awards and won twice: in 1976 for best instrumental composition, “Bellavia”; and in 1979 for best pop instrumental performance, for the title track from his score to the film “The Children of Sanchez.”
Mangione hits could be grandiose, including “Land of Make Believe,” or lightly funky, such as the aptly named “Feels So Good,” a Top 10 hit in 1978. Always melodic, his cottoncandy hooks could bore into listeners’ senses with a mood-elevating rush.
Mangione’s smooth jazz borrowed extensively from fusion — the infusion of electronic instruments into the jazz mainstream that Miles Davis had spearheaded in the late 1960s — dosing it with gossamer flamenco-ish guitar and a disco backbeat, the perfect sonic pillow for his lyrical flugelhorn. The result was a popjazz hybrid with enormous commercial appeal.
“Feels So Good,” released in October 1977 as the title track off what quickly became a double-platinum album, made Mangione a superstar and cemented his style. It was infused with jazzlike licks but light on true jazz improvisation. Still, it brought the notion of jazz to a vast music-buying public that, for at least a decade, had been focused almost exclusively on rock ’n’ roll and its offshoots.
Mangione’s jazz roots ran deep. His earliest work had been as a trumpeter in the 1960s in the big bands of Woody Herman and Maynard Ferguson and drummer Art Blakey’s quintet (which also included a young Keith Jarrett on piano), and he knew how to blow. Stardom in the record business did not ultimately gratify him.
“I would get a lot of calls from different companies,” he recalled. “‘Oh, yeah, Chuck, you started that “smooth jazz” sound and we’d love to have you. Here’s what we’d like to do: We’d like the tempo to be like this and it’s got to have this sound, and a juggler and three elephants,
and … .’ I was not excited about that.”
Mangione also wrote music that underscored two Olympics: “Chase the Clouds Away,” for the 1976 Summer Games in Montreal, and “Give It All You Got,” which he performed live for the globally televised closing ceremony of the 1980 Winter Games in Lake Placid, New York. That performance won him an Emmy and became his second Top 40 hit.
Charles Frank Mangione was born Nov. 29, 1940, in Rochester. His father, Frank, worked for Eastman Kodak, and his mother, Nancy (Bellavia) Mangione, worked at Samson United, a Rochester-based home appliance manufacturer, before the two of them opened a grocery store, Mangione’s Market.
His music-loving parents enrolled him in music school when he was 8. At age 10, he saw the Kirk Douglas film “Young Man With a Horn” and decided that he wanted to play the trumpet. His older brother, Gaspare, a budding pianist known to the family as Gap, became his at-home performing partner.
His father soon began taking his sons to the nearby Ridgecrest Inn, where jazz luminaries such as Davis, Blakey and Dizzy Gillespie played regularly. “My father would walk up to someone like Dizzy and say: ‘Hi, Mr. Gillespie. These are my two sons and they can play.’ And we would sit in,” Mangione recalled in a 1999 interview with JazzTimes magazine.
“Then,” he added, “my dad would invite everyone to our house for spaghetti and homemade wine. Dad had a grocery store attached
to the house, and Mother loved to cook, so we could have a party in a minute. This week it would be Dizzy, the next week Carmen McRae, then Sarah Vaughan, Art Blakey, Kai Winding.”
It was Gillespie who became his mentor — “my musical father,” as Mangione put it. As a gift, Gillespie gave the 15-year old Mangione one of his trademark upswept trumpets.
While still in high school, the Mangione brothers formed a quintet, the Jazz Brothers. Chuck then proceeded to the Eastman School of Music in Rochester in 1958, graduating in 1963 with a bachelor’s degree in music. It was at Eastman where he first picked up the flugelhorn.
Through the admiring efforts of great saxophonist Cannonball Adderley, the brothers also began recording for Riverside Records, while the younger Mangione was still at Eastman. They released their first album, “The Jazz Brothers,” in 1960, and two more, “Hey Baby” and “Spring Fever,” the next year.
Chuck Mangione headed for New York City after graduating and joined Art Blakey’s
Jazz Messengers in 1965 on Gillespie’s recommendation. The next year, he did some arranging for the Outsiders, a Cleveland-based garage-rock band, including on a single, “Help Me Girl,” which cracked the Billboard Top 40.
Mangione is survived by his daughters, Nancy Piraino and Diana Smith; a sister, Josephine Shank; his brother, Gap; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. His wife, Rosemarie, died in 2015.
“I’ve written probably 95% of the music I’ve played,” Mangione once said, “but I don’t take credit for writing the music. I feel like the cord between the plug in the wall and the tape recorder; I wait around and hope I get some new information, and then try to present it in the best possible way. I’m very protective of it and don’t put it out there until I feel like it’s really happening.
He added: “Dizzy taught me that if you want to just play whatever you want to play without considering the audience, fine. But if you want to get paid, you’re now in a different ballgame.”
Wall Street regained confidence in Medicaid insurers after Centene said on Friday it expects to be able to raise rates charged to states for 2026 health plans for low-income Americans and strengthen profit margins.
Insurer shares rose across the board. Centene shares were up 5% in early afternoon trading after falling 16% on the company’s announcement of a second-quarter loss and forecast cut. Rivals UnitedHealth, CVS Health and Humana rose 1.61%, 2.69% and 3.45%, respectively.
All three report earnings next week.
Centene in an earnings call reassured investors it would work with states to ensure their payments for Medicaid plans match the company’s increased medical costs for 2026.
“Our goal is to reprice 100%” of plans, said company CEO Sarah London.
Insurers are paid a set amount by states for Medicaid plans, which are jointly funded with the federal government. Centene, UnitedHealth and Elevance have said this year that state reimbursements for these plans have lagged behind actual costs of care.
Cautious investors have been looking for Medicaid health plan design changes and strategic geographic changes by the companies to reduce use of healthcare services.
New work requirements for Medicaid recipients in President Donald Trump’s signature tax-cut and spending bill have made some investors worry that healthy people could disenroll in coming years.
The bill requires states to verify certain members are working or volunteering a minimum of 80 hours per month to qualify for Medicaid coverage starting in 2027.
After a COVID-19 era requirement to keep people enrolled expired in 2023, Medicaid plans redetermined each person’s eligibility. This pushed members off, changing the mix of sick and healthy participants, and some Medicaid insurers struggled.
Inflows into global equity funds picked up again in the week through July 23 as optimism over U.S. trade deals, stronger than expected U.S. economic reports and an encouraging start to the corporate earnings season boosted risk sentiment.
Global investors snapped up a net $8.71 billion worth of equity funds during the week, reversing a $4.4 billion net withdrawal in the prior week, data from LSEG Lipper showed.
The United States and Japan agreed a deal earlier this week which cut existing import tariffs on Japanese goods to a lower-thanthreatened 15%. Investors were also hopeful about the prospects of the U.S. and the European Union settling on U.S. import tariffs
of around 15%.
Investors took comfort from encouraging initial earnings reports as advanced AI chip maker TSMC posted a record profit and Gatorade owner PepsiCo upgraded its earnings forecasts.
Net European equity fund inflows reached an 11-week high of $8.79 billion, while Asian funds drew a net $1.17 billion. U.S. equity funds lagged, although net outflows eased to $2.68 billion from about $11.67 billion the prior week.
“The Medicaid redeterminations have proven to be far more disruptive than anyone thought,” said Jeff Jonas, a

portfolio manager at Gabelli Funds. “The entire industry is focused on restoring margin over winning new contracts and membership.”
More detailed data could justify midyear price increases, said Kevin Gade, chief operating officer at Bahl & Gaynor, and correct mismatched rates set by states after the pandemic.
More data over the next year will also enable insurers to improve cost management techniques and raise rates paid by states, Gade said. “With enough data you can take care of the problem.”
The technology sector gained $1.61 billion, reversing the previous week’s $576 million net outflow. The financial and industrial sectors also saw $1.13 billion and $1.61 billion net additions, respectively.

The leaders of Thailand and Cambodia are scheduled to arrive in Malaysia on Monday to discuss a possible ceasefire, an effort started by President Donald Trump amid a mounting flurry of diplomatic exchanges to halt a deadly border conflict that has entered its fourth day.
Cambodian Prime Pinister Hun Manet said Sunday that he would lead a delegation to attend the meeting in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia’s capital, in which China would also participate. He will meet with Thailand’s acting prime minister, Phumtham Wechayachai, and other officials, said Jirayu Houngsub, a Thai government spokesperson. The meeting is set for 3 p.m. Malaysian time.
“The purpose of this meeting is to achieve an immediate ceasefire, which was initiated by President Donald Trump and agreed to by both prime ministers of Cambodia and Thailand,” Hun Manet said in a statement on social media.
Some analysts see this dispute as a test of U.S. and Chinese influence in Southeast Asia, where Washington and Beijing are competing for dominance. Thailand is a U.S. treaty ally and hosts dozens of military exercises with the United States; China is the largest trading partner of Thailand and Cambodia, which hosts a naval base largely funded by Beijing. Instability in the two Southeast Asian nations could jeopardize the strategic and economic interests of the two world powers.
On Saturday, Trump said, he called Hun Manet and Phumtham, adding that they had

agreed to work out a ceasefire to the conflict, which has killed at least 34 people. On Sunday, the State Department said Secretary of State Marco Rubio had spoken by phone with his counterparts in Thailand and Cambodia, urging them to lower tensions immediately and agree to an end to the conflict.
But sporadic skirmishes flared between Thai and Cambodian troops along the two countries’ disputed border early Sunday, un-
derscoring the challenge of resolving an increasingly bitter and long-running conflict, one of the deadliest ever between the two Southeast Asian neighbors. Analysts said that both countries could also be seeking to grab territory before an agreement was signed.
Rubio said he had told Cambodia’s deputy prime minister and foreign minister, Prak Sokhonn, and Thailand’s foreign minister, Maris Sangiampongsa, about Trump’s desire for peace. On Saturday, Trump said he would not negotiate trade deals with Cambodia and Thailand until they stopped the fighting.
On Sunday, Phumtham said he had told Trump that Thailand had agreed in principle to a ceasefire and had asked Trump to inform Cambodia that talks should take place as soon as possible. He added that he would “like to see sincere intention from the Cambodian side.”
But the deputy spokesperson of the Thai army, Col. Richa Suksuwanont, drew a distinction between Trump’s conversation with the Thai leader and what was happening on the ground.
“The troops in the battlefield are still following battle strategies,” he said in a statement. “Thailand confirms that the ceasefire will happen only when Cambodia reaches out to us themselves for negotiation.”
The conflict flared after two months of tension over contested territory. In the last outbreak of deadly battles between the countries, from 2008-11, 34 people were killed, according to an academic paper. This year, that death toll was reached in less than a week.
Hun Manet said he hoped Thailand would
not go back on its ceasefire vow. He added that the Thais had violated a similar promise made after Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim negotiated with both sides on Thursday. Malaysia is the chair of the 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations, to which Cambodia and Thailand also belong.
Thai and Cambodian forces exchanged fire Sunday along the border, near the site of a temple, claimed by both countries, known as Prasat Ta Khwai to the Thais and Prasat Ta Krabey to the Cambodians. The deputy Thai rmy spokesperson, Richa, said the first shots were fired by Cambodia into Thai territory in several areas, including into civilian homes, early Sunday.
Lt. Gen. Maly Socheata, a spokesperson for the Cambodian Defense Ministry, said Cambodia “categorically rejects and condemns in the strongest terms the baseless and irresponsible accusation by Thailand that Cambodia initiated hostilities.”
She said Thailand’s forces started shelling Cambodian territory at 2 a.m. and expanded their operations to Prasat Ta Krabey and near another ancient temple also claimed by both countries, called Prasat Ta Moan Thom by the Cambodians and Prasat Ta Muen Thom by the Thais. The site is where violence first erupted Thursday.
At 6 a.m., Thailand sent in tanks and troops to “invade” in multiple areas, according to Maly Socheata.
“Such actions undermine all efforts toward peaceful resolution and expose Thailand’s clear intent to escalate rather than deescalate the conflict,” Maly Socheata said.

Israel said it had paused military activity in parts of the Gaza Strip on Sunday to allow in international aid, amid growing outrage over the severe hunger faced by Palestinians in the territory. The decision was a sharp reversal by Israel and followed growing international pressure over the dire conditions in Gaza, where nearly 1 in 3 people has not been eating “for multiple days in a row,” the U.N. World Food Program says.
As part of the measures announced Sunday, Israeli forces will pause operations in at least three parts of Gaza from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. to allow aid to flow in, the Israeli military said in a statement. They will also designate permanent routes for U.N. convoys to deliver aid, it added.
The announcement came as Jordan and the United Arab Emirates began parachuting aid into Gaza in coordination with Israel, according to the Israeli Defense Ministry and Jordanian state me-
dia. Israel said Friday that it would allow foreign countries to do so.
It was unclear whether the policy change would allow enough aid to reach hungry Palestinians. Israel has announced similar tactical pauses in the past with mixed results.
Aid agencies and many countries, including some traditional allies, say Israel is responsible for the situation after first blocking and then restricting aid deliveries to Gaza for months.
Six Palestinians died of malnutrition-
related causes over the past day, including two children, Gaza’s Health Ministry said. More than 50 Palestinians have died this month from starvation, the ministry said, and medical workers are themselves increasingly struggling to find food.
Israel has also continued military operations. At least 13 people were killed Sunday by Israeli forces in central Gaza near an aid distribution point, according to Al Awda hospital. The Israeli military did not immediately comment.

The beach in Costa Rica where Malcolm-Jamal Warner drowned was known for its strong surf and dangerous rip currents, and was not protected by lifeguards when he died on July 20. A second man who was rescued from the sea that day was in critical condition, the authorities said.
Warner, who shot to fame as a teenager when he played Theo Huxtable on “The Cosby Show” from 1984 to 1992, was swimming at a beach on the Caribbean side of Costa Rica, south of Limón, when he was “apparently swept away by a current” around 2 p.m. Sunday, the nation’s Judicial Investigation Department said in a statement.
Three ambulances, a Jet Ski and nine rescuers were dispatched to the area, Playa Grande, a popular tourist destination, a spokesperson for the Costa Rican Red Cross said in a statement. Warner, 54, was pulled from the sea and given CPR for more than 20 minutes, but attempts to resuscitate him failed, officials said. A second man, 35, was rescued and taken to a local clinic in critical condition, the Red Cross said. He was not identified, and no other details were given.
The area, whose waves make it a favorite among surfers, is known for dangerously strong rip currents.
Mike Geist, the vice president of Caribbean Guard, a group of about 35 volunteer lifeguards who patrol three beaches in the area, said a lack of resources had left the beach where Warner died unguarded on Sunday. The group had temporarily moved its team to another beach that draws more people and had recently been the site of several rescues and a fatality.
“We had to make this judgment call,
ly strong,” he said, able to sweep people offshore at a rate of 6 feet per second.
Though recent data is lacking, Houser said that roughly 50 people a year drown in rip currents in Costa Rica, and that about 2 out of every 5 are tourists. There was an eight-day period in the early 2000s during which six drownings occurred, he added. The drownings have prompted the local authorities to put the lifeguard program into place, but lifeguards are “not there at all times, they can’t cover all the beaches,” he said. “There’s just not a lot of investment that is being made.”
News of Warner’s death shocked Hollywood. After Warner rose to fame as a teenager playing Theo Huxtable, he went on to a long and varied career.
Bill Cosby, who played his father on “The Cosby Show,” told 6ABC in Philadelphia on Monday that Warner had been professional and talented and worked hard on the set.
“When news came, it was shocking,” said Cosby, a former star whose career was derailed after more than 50 women accused him of sexual misconduct. “And of course, my thoughts went straight to his mother, who worked so hard. She was so wonderful with him.”
and it turned out to be bad,” Geist said, lamenting that his organization did not have the funds to staff the beach every day. “It sickens my stomach that we weren’t there, because I can’t tell you how many days I personally spent there on that post, in that guard stand, and because of stupid money, you know, and we just did not have enough people to do it.”
Geist said his friend, who is a surfer and a doctor, had pulled Warner from the water that afternoon. “Malcolm was on the floor of the ocean,” he said.
A spokesperson for the Judicial Investigation Department said an autopsy that was conducted Tuesday found that Warner’s death had been accidental, caused
by asphyxiation by submersion.
Andrea Sánchez Campos, the owner of Faith Glamping Dome, a boutique hotel in the area, said that the beach was dotted with red flags and that the Costa Rican Tourism Board had also posted a number of warning signs.
“The accident occurred in an area frequently visited by surfers because it has strong waves,” Sánchez said in a telephone interview. She said the sea had been looking unusually rough and brownish in color the last couple of days. “The currents were extremely strong, and this was evident from the debris left on the beach,” she said.
Playa Grande is so well known for its rip currents that Chris Houser, a professor of earth and environmental sciences at the University of Waterloo in Canada, has taken students there to study them. Research has shown the rip currents there to be “extreme-
Warner was born in Jersey City, New Jersey. His parents divorced when he was 6 but maintained a close relationship throughout his life. After “The Cosby Show” he went on to star in several other shows, including “Reed Between the Lines” opposite Tracee Ellis Ross and later as Dr. AJ Austin for six seasons in the gritty drama “The Resident.”
As Warner’s star continued to rise over the years — finding success as a spokenword poet and winning a Grammy Award in 2015 for his contribution to the Robert Glasper Experiment’s version of the Stevie Wonder classic “Jesus Children of America” — he kept parts of his private life to himself.
On the podcast “Hot & Bothered With Melyssa Ford,” Warner said this spring that he had sought to keep his wife and child out of the limelight.
“I talk about them, because they are obviously the hugest parts of my life, the best parts of my life, the best decisions I’ve ever made, but I like to keep them and their identity private,” he said.
“I love talking about them,” he continued, “because I want people to know that it is possible to be happy and to have love and love really be enriching.”
Bill Pulte at his confirmation hearing before the Senate Banking Committee in Washington on Feb. 27, 2025. Pulte, now the director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency, has used his perch and his social media prowess to become the Trump administration’s loudest critic of Jerome Powell, the Federal Reserve chair. By ALAN RAPPEPORT and MATTHEW GOLDSTEIN
At a meeting with House Republicans this month, President Donald Trump waved a draft of a letter firing Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell.
The letter, which rattled Washington and global markets, was not written by Trump or his core economic advisers. Instead, it was drafted by Bill Pulte, director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency, who has used his perch and his social media prowess to become the Trump administration’s loudest critic of Powell.
The campaign against Powell has given Pulte, an heir of one of America’s largest homebuilding families, a new prominence within the Trump administration that exceeds the usually quiet confines of the agency. A longtime social media maven, Pulte has deployed his bombastic tone and his credibility from the construction industry to argue that the Fed’s policies are hurting the housing market and that a $2.5 billion renovation of its headquarters is an example of reckless spending by the central bank.
“I believe Jerome Powell is conducting economic warfare against America,” Pulte wrote on social platform X this month.
For weeks, Pulte, who has 3 million followers, has called for Powell to either resign or be investigated over a renovation to the Federal Reserve building in Washington that he has said is “riddled with fraud.”
The approach has also been an opportunity for Pulte to ingratiate himself with the president, a developer. Within hours of Trump’s making a comment about his frustration with Powell’s policy on interest rates, Pulte usually takes to X with a post demanding Powell’s resignation.
The onslaught of social media posts and television appearances by Pulte has raised eyebrows in Congress
and within the housing world. The public campaign has also raised questions about potential conflicts of interest and whether Pulte — along with the Trump administration broadly — has any plans to jump-start home sales and improve housing affordability, beyond relentlessly attacking Powell to lower interest rates.
Pulte has not hesitated to use the housing agency’s letterhead to extend his effort, which sometimes includes spreading rumors. Two weeks ago, Pulte issued a news release in which he said he “was encouraged” by unsubstantiated reports that Powell was thinking of resigning.
On Thursday, Pulte joined White House officials who are scrutinizing the cost of the Fed’s renovation project for a tour of the site. The Fed’s project, which kicked off in 2022, is estimated to be $700 million over budget. Critics of Powell contend that the cost overrun is an example of his mismanagement of the institution and have suggested that the expense is a reason he should resign.
“Where is Jerome Powell? Where did Jerome Powell put the $2.5 billion?” Pulte said in a Fox News television appearance from outside the Fed building this week.
Representatives with the housing agency declined repeated requests for comment.
Democratic lawmakers, including some of Powell’s harshest critics, have blasted Pulte’s commentary, saying he should be focused on America’s housing crisis.
“Your job is to manage FHFA, oversee our nation’s mortgage market and lower costs for American families — full stop,” Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., wrote in a letter to Pulte this week. “Your prolific activity on X and apparent decision to take time away from your duties as FHFA director to draft a letter for President Trump to fire Chair Powell are abnormal.”
Warren, who is no fan of Powell, added, “Your behavior raises significant questions about your judgment and commitment to operating FHFA in a responsible, competent and lawful manner.”
Pulte, 37, came to run the housing agency with little housing policy experience. A grandson of William Pulte, who was the founder of PulteGroup, one of the largest American homebuilders, he did not play an active role at the company, though he did serve as a board member from 2016-20.
Pulte has long had an entrepreneurial spirit. In college, at Northwestern University, he founded an aerial photography company but also showed signs of having political ambition.
“The way we think of Trump as a showman, this guy had elements of it, too,” Ryan Erickson, who was a former president of the Northwestern College Democrats and endorsed Pulte’s candidacy to lead the student government in 2009.
Before being tapped by Trump to run the housing agency, Pulte was best known for running his own investment firm and helping to clean up blighted homes in Detroit — not far from where PulteGroup got its start.
In later years, Pulte gained a big following on social
media for his “Twitter Philanthropy,” to raise money for a variety of causes including victims of school shootings. He also has a reputation for pumping up meme stocks on social media and giving out dubious financial advice.
Despite his penchant for aggressive social media tactics, Pulte has also been the recipient of harassment online. In 2022, he sued an executive at the homebuilding company that his family founded for trolling him on Twitter during company time.
Pulte’s financial disclosures showed that he still has strong ties to the real estate market and remains a managing member of the Pulte Family Office, an investment fund. Pulte, who according to the filing is worth more than $200 million, has for years called for lower interest rates to boost the real estate sector and is now doing so from a prominent government perch.
“To the extent to which Pulte has input into the direction of the Federal Reserve — and his statements suggest he thinks he has some — it is problematic that his input is in line with his personal financial interests,” said Jeff Hauser, executive director of the Revolving Door Project, which scrutinizes the influence of money in politics.
Several housing policymakers and former housing regulators, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they feared angering Pulte, said they found his use of social media unsettling and somewhat embarrassing. Others have begun to refer to Pulte as a “mini-Trump,” given the president’s proclivity to use social media to lash out at his political critics and opponents.
But if there was any thought that Trump had lost confidence in Pulte, that was dashed this past weekend. In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump praised Pulte, saying he is doing an “outstanding job.” Trump also wrote in all caps: “WILLIAM, DON’T LET THE RADICAL LEFT WEAKLINGS STOP YOU!”
Pulte, who was a contributor to Trump’s presidential campaign last year, reposted the president’s message several times and thanked him for his support. He later issued a news release on the housing agency’s website about Trump’s post.
For now, Trump has ruled out firing Powell, but he has not let up in his campaign against the Fed chair. Neither has Pulte. On Tuesday, he appeared to be ratcheting up the pressure with a post on X that asked what workers at the nation’s central bank really did.
The one-two punch from Trump and Pulte appears to be aimed at undermining confidence in Powell’s ability to keep leading the Fed until his term runs out next year.
One criticism of Pulte is that beyond his social media posts railing about Powell he hasn’t done much to outline a strategic policy on getting the housing market going and confronting what some economists and analysts estimate is a nationwide shortage of at least 2 million homes.
“I am not quite sure what the overarching policy is,” said Laurie Goodman, founder of the Housing Finance Policy Center at the Urban Institute. “What is his philosophy?”

It’s rare to think of American wine in terms of a pantheon. American consumers have always been drawn more to what’s flashy and new rather than to established producers who have demonstrated consistent, focused excellence over the long haul.
Perhaps that’s because few demonstrably great and influential producers have been able to stay the course without changes in ownership that radically altered the character of the wines. Robert Mondavi Winery is one example. With producers like Mayacamas Vineyards, Diamond Creek Vineyards and Heitz Cellar, the changes in ownership have been too recent to fully understand their effect. Who does that leave? I think immediately of Mount Eden Vineyards and Ridge Monte Bello in the Santa Cruz Mountains. In Napa Valley I would single out Philip Togni Vineyard, Spottswoode and Corison, and in Sonoma Valley, maybe Hanzell Vineyards.
What about in newer areas with histories stretching back just a few decades? I nominate Littorai. Few growers and producers populated the western Sonoma Coast in 1993, when Ted and Heidi Lemon made their first vintage, 150 cases of chardonnay from the Mays Canyon Vineyard. The incessant fog, the isolation that might require a 90-minute drive to pick up a part and living off the grid made the area too difficult and risky for many.
But the Lemons were drawn by the geological diversity. The area they settled on, mostly around the town of Occidental and farther north along the coast, was large and varied with many nooks and crannies. Ted Lemon, whose training and early career were
in Burgundy, was searching for areas in California where he could explore the sort of differing terroirs for chardonnay and pinot noir that he found so intriguing in France.
He was also drawn to the Anderson Valley in Mendocino Country, a more established wine region but with few of the sort of small, well-farmed vineyards that he was seeking.
From those early beginnings, the Lemons at Littorai, both as growers and producers, have put together more than 30 years of gorgeous wines from both the Sonoma Coast and Anderson Valley that not only have stood the test of time but have helped to establish
those regions as great sources of California pinot noir and chardonnay, all while influencing many growers and producers who followed.
With the release of their 30th vintage this year, Littorai has put on tastings around the country to, well, celebrate is not the right word for the self-effacing Lemons. Maybe the more accurate phrase would be to share their progress.
I attended one of the tastings at Union Square Cafe in New York this month, covering 19 wines ranging from the 1995 vintage to the 2023. It’s not often constructive to observe anniversaries for wine producers — they roll up almost every day and signify little. Given the excellence and importance of Littorai, though, it seemed worth taking a moment to look back on its history and how California wine has evolved over its three decades.
Back in the 1990s, California pinot noir was about to enter a period of growth and transformation. In the 1970s and ’80s, successful examples were rare. Those that succeeded back then, like Mount Eden, Chalone, Au Bon Climat and Calera, inspired many others to try their luck. At the same time, the tastes of the dominant critics of the time for dark, plush, opulent wines initiated an era of high-alcohol pinot noir fruit bombs. Chardonnays tended to the extravagant and flamboyant with flavors of oak and buttered popcorn.
These were not the sorts of wines that
Ted Lemon wanted to make. He was looking for freshness and elegance, qualities that no longer seemed to be prized.
“You’re standing in the dock and the party boat has gone with all the rich beautiful people, but you don’t want to be on the boat,” he said at the tasting, describing the feeling of being stylistically out of step. “The key for us was starting small in San Francisco and New York and growing slowly.”
Back then Ted Lemon, who would oversee farming and winemaking and be Littorai’s public face, and Heidi Lemon, who would manage the business and the staff, decided to buy grapes rather than acquire land in places they barely knew.
“There was no way in an unknown region that we were going to buy a specific plot early on,” Ted Lemon said in an interview after the tasting. “Nobody knew. We didn’t know. We saw being able to buy grapes as a huge advantage.”
Eventually, they grew to understand the land well enough that over the years they bought four small vineyards, along with leasing parts of numerous others. All are farmed biodynamically, another way in which Littorai led on the Sonoma Coast and in the Anderson Valley.
From the earliest wines we tasted, a ’95 pinot noir from the Hirsch Vineyard on the Sonoma Coast and a ’98 pinot from the One Acre Vineyard in the Anderson Valley, the characteristic Littorai style was in place. The Hirsch was intense yet pretty, still solid 30 years in, while the One Acre was complex, graceful and lovely.
My favorites among the pinot noirs included a light, focused 2000 from the Savoy Vineyard in Mendocino; a lively, graceful 2006 from the Haven Vineyard in Sonoma; a clear, pure 2014 from the Cerise Vineyard in Mendocino, which Ted Lemon is no longer able to farm; a bright, spicy 2015 from the Pivot in Sonoma; and a floral, precise gossamer 2023 from the Pivot, the current vintage.
Among the chardonnays, I loved a rich, complex, oily textured 2002 from the Charles Heintz Vineyard; a rich, incisive 2013 from the Heintz Vineyard; and a saline, energetic 2023 from the B.A. Thieriot Vineyard, all on the Sonoma Coast.
Nowadays, Littorai makes wines from 13 different sites.
“There’s no other winery where you can taste such a cross section of the true north coast,” Ted Lemon said in an uncharacteristic bit of crowing.

The Patrulleros (Patrolmen) of San Sebastián and Peces Voladores (Flying Fish) of Salinas tied their respective Double A Superior Baseball League national semifinals series on Saturday.
San Sebastián halted the Juncos Mulos’ (Mules) four-game winning streak, while Salinas ended the Patillas Leones’ (Lions) threegame winning streak. Both semifinals series are even at a game apiece.
In the A semifinal, star right-hander Anthony Borrero went the distance to lead the
Patrulleros to a 2-1 victory over the Mulos in front of 1,500 fans at Mariano “Niní” Meaux Stadium in Juncos. Borrero struck out seven, allowed five hits and issued just one walk.
A double by Wilberto “Chinero” Feliciano with two outs in the eighth inning drove in Glenn Díaz to break the 1-1 tie. Left-handed reliever Nelvin Fuentes allowed the run and took the loss for the Mulos. Fuentes relieved Héctor Quiñones, who pitched seven solid innings with one unearned run.
In the B semifinal, the Peces Voladores rallied for six runs in the eighth inning to defeat the Leones 10-6 in front of more than 1,500
fans at Manuel González Stadium in Salinas. Patillas led 6-4 in the eighth inning, but a solo home run by Emmanuel Marrero sparked the rally by the hosts. Then, a single by Kevin Vargas tied the score, and a single by Joek Rivera put Salinas ahead 7-6.
For the Leones, Reymond Fuentes homered and drove in two runs in the loss.
Right-handed reliever Oscar González pitched 1.2 innings with one run allowed to earn the win. Jean Pabón took the loss, allowing four runs and retiring just one batter.
The series continue this Friday at 8 p.m., the start of a three-game weekend.

The Vaqueros (Cowboys) of Bayamón defeated the Cangrejeros (Crabbers) of Santurce 88-85 on Saturday in the A Conference semifinal series of the 2025 National Superior Basketball Championship (BSN).
The victory put the Vaqueros ahead in the series 3-2. Bayamón will try to advance to the league finals tonight in a game at Roberto Clemente Coliseum in Hato Rey that tips off at 8:15 p.m. If a seventh and deciding game is necessary,
it would be played on Wednesday at Rubén Rodríguez Coliseum in Bayamón.
Saturday’s game, held at Rubén Rodríguez Coliseum, began with the visitors building a 48-38 advantage at halftime. However, the Vaqueros adjusted on both ends of the court and managed to tie the score at 62-62 at the end of the third quarter. Bayamón then prevailed in a closely contested final frame to come away with the win.
Christopher Duarte led the Vaqueros with 33 points, three rebounds, two assists and four steals. Gary Browne
added 17 points, four rebounds, seven assists and two steals, and JaVale McGee contributed 12 points, four rebounds and two steals.
Kenneth Faried led the Cangrejeros with 19 points and 10 rebounds.
Meanwhile, the Leones of Ponce were looking to close out their Conference B semifinal series against the Indios of Mayagüez on Sunday night at Germán Wilkins Vélez Ramírez Sports and Recreation Center in Mayagüez. The Leones won 91-88 at home on Friday to take a 3-1 series lead.

The team, Cacique Mara, has been denied the visas necessary to attend, Little League Baseball International said Friday.
A team from Mexico, Santa María de Aguayo of Victoria, is taking its place.
The Senior League World Series invites 12 teams of players ages 13-16 — older than those in the higher-profile Little League World Series, which is for ages 10-12 and is a staple of ESPN’s daytime summer programming.
Cacique Mara said it learned a week ago that the visas had been denied. Its players, raised in one of the world’s most unstable countries, are demoralized, the team’s president said.
It appeared that Cacique Mara had been swept up in the severe travel restrictions that President Donald Trump has placed on more than a dozen countries. The administration allows exceptions for athletes and coaches traveling for major athletic competitions such as the World Cup and the Olympics.
Cacique Mara said on social media that
players and coaches from the team sat for interviews July 14 to try to secure visas, but were denied by an immigration officer.
The White House referred inquiries to the State Department, which said in a statement Saturday that its consular officers were reviewing the case to check if “proper procedures” had been followed.
Since returning to office, Trump has imposed travel bans on at least 12 countries, while restricting visas for citizens from another seven countries, including Venezuela, which is gripped by poverty, hyperinflation, political instability, violent crime and an authoritarian government.
To qualify for the Senior League World Series, which is run by the same organization that hosts the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, Cacique Mara dominated the Latin America Region Tournament, played in Ciudad Victoria, Mexico, over five days in mid-June.
The team won all five games in the regional, beating its opponents by a total of 45 runs.
