The mayor of Loíza, Julia Nazario Fuentes, has released an urgent call, indicating the alarming presence of a substantial amount of sargassum along her municipality’s coastline, particularly inundating the Parcelas Suárez community and extending all the way to Puente Herrera.
“Every year, we brace ourselves for the sargassum that washes ashore, yet the sheer volume that arrived last night is unprecedented, and the influx shows no signs of diminishing,” she remarked with concern.
As this brown seaweed slowly decomposes along the sandy shores, it emits hydrogen sulfide gas, a byproduct known for producing a pungent, rotten egg smell that has begun to permeate the coastal air, adversely affecting the quality of life for residents. Though sargassum itself is not classified as toxic, it can facilitate the proliferation of marine organisms, including jellyfish larvae, which can irritate the skin of unsuspecting beachgoers. Moreover, the noxious gas emitted during decomposition poses a respiratory threat, especially to individuals with asthma and other respiratory conditions.
In her statement, Nazario Fuentes conveyed that she had reached out to state authorities, specifically contacting Nelson Cruz, the Undersecretary of the Department of Natural and Environmental Resources (DRNA). He assured her that a specialized technical team would be dispatched today, Monday afternoon, to initiate a thorough clean-up and proper disposal of the troublesome sargassum. “Loiza lacks the necessary equipment for such extensive cleanup efforts, but our team is prepared to collaborate closely with them,” she added, highlighting the urgency of the situation.
According to the environmental advocacy website paralanaturaleza.org, Puerto Rico is currently grappling with the most significant influx of these floating algae recorded this year. Julio Morell, a seasoned professor in the Department of Marine Sciences at the
University of Puerto Rico’s Mayagüez Campus (RUM), remarked that this challenging event began unfolding around the weekend of June 11 and is still in progress. He noted that satellite imagery continues to reveal vast quantities of this macroalgae lingering in the Atlantic waters. Historically, the peak season for sargassum in the Caribbean typically spans from July to August.
The exact reasons behind this dramatic surge of sargassum remain somewhat enigmatic. However, experts speculate that various contributing factors, including agricultural runoff, elevated water temperatures, and fluctuations in wind patterns, ocean currents, and rainfall, might be exacerbating the phenomenon, as highlighted in reports by The Guardian.
Looking ahead, predictions indicate that 2025 could set a daunting record for sargassum accumulation in the Atlantic, with scientists anticipating a staggering 40% increase compared to the previous high noted in 2022. This development poses a significant environmental challenge for the Caribbean region. Puerto Rico’s coastlines are already experiencing the repercussions: since mid-May, popular beaches such as Playa Santa in Guánica and Punta Santiago in Humacao have reported significant sargassum build-up, creating discomfort for both residents and visitors alike.

overnor Jenniffer Aidyn González Colón made several appointments to government commissions, agencies, and boards, with the designations taking immediate effect due to the Senate’s legislative recess.
Among the appointments, she designated attorney Jessica Ñeco Morales as president of the Puerto Rico Pilots Commission, an entity created under Law 226 of August 12, 1999. This commission has the authority to establish disciplinary rules, maritime traffic regulations, and applicable fees and charges for pilotage services in Puerto Rico.
Pilotage is defined in the law as the science or art of mastering the pilot’s trade—an experienced person with knowledge of the area in which they navigate, qualifying them to direct vessels within coastal or port zones, thus
protecting life, property, and natural resources.
The governor also appointed Dr. María S. Conte Miller as executive director of the Institute of Forensic Sciences. This appointment follows the elimination of the Institute’s Board of Directors under Law 43-2025, which had previously held the power to make such a designation.
Additionally, she appointed José Martínez Martínez as a member of the Board of Directors of the Institute of Puerto Rica Culture and also as a member of the Board of Directors of the Puerto Rico School of Plastic Arts and Design Corporation.
Lastly, she designated Josean Feliciano García as a member of the Workforce Development Board.
All appointments made on Friday will take immediate effect while the regular legislative session of the Puerto Rico Senate remains in recess.

Puerto Rican-grown coffee is on the brink of extinction, officials have warned.
Secretary of Agriculture Josué Rivera Castro has disclosed the alarming condition of coffee production, which is now evident— local coffee makes up only 15% of national consumption.
Puerto Rican coffee is renowned, yet it faces a critical threat, he told Magic 97.3’s Primer Round.
For years, the industry has been hindered by a perceived labor shortage, but the reality is far worse: there are hardly any coffee bushes left to harvest.

million trees, still looms large in conversations about agricultural catastrophe. The response has been inadequate, with only about 150,000 trees planted so far.
With coffee plants taking 2 to 4 years to start yielding and even longer to reach peak production, the timeline for recovery is daunting.
“The issue extends beyond labor shortages. Without trees, coffee production is impossible,” Rivera Castro emphasized.
Imported coffee is cheaper, while local production expenses continue to rise, pushing Puerto Rican coffee closer to extinction. This industry, once thriving, now struggles under the weight of nostalgia, reminiscent of the sugarcane and china industries, in a landscape where influencers outnumber farmers. The time to act is now, or we risk losing a vital part of our
agricultural heritage.
In 2022, Puerto Rico faced a dramatic loss of 74% of its coffee farms, with 19 municipalities entirely devoid of active coffee plantations, as

highlighted by the Agricultural Census. Current production now stands at a mere 6% of its previous levels, a stark decline from 83% just 20 years ago, according to a report by the UAGM (General Directorate of Agriculture).
The labor shortage is critical: there is an urgent demand for 7,000 pickers, yet local and foreign workers are in short supply. Efforts to recruit foreign labor have been hindered by prohibitive costs and bureaucratic red tape, making it nearly impossible to resolve the issue effectively.
Furthermore, climate change poses a significant threat to coffee production in Puerto Rico. Rising temperatures and altered rainfall patterns risk substantial losses of farmland, jeopardizing the future of this vital industry on the island.

The Secretary of Education, Eliezer Ra-
mos Parés, announced the start of the recruitment process for 842 T1 service assistant positions, which will be assigned to the Associate Secretariat of Special Education. These positions, which were previously contracted through the provisional remedy mechanism, will now be part of the Department of Education’s regular staff, representing a significant step toward stability in special education services.
This initiative is part of a broader effort
that also included permanent appointments for teachers, principals, and nurses, strengthening the stability of the education system ahead of the start of the new school year.
Ramos Parés emphasized that this action will help stabilize the agency’s staff and ensure a smoother and more efficient transition of services for students in the Special Education Program. “This effort not only creates stability in the agency’s staff, but also improves the quality of educational services for our students,” he said.
The interim remedy mechanism, which included the hiring of service assistants, had seen a significant increase in the number of
contracts in recent years. However, the lack of stability and marginal benefits associated with these contracts led to difficulties in providing services, as well as resignations by those hired. With the new recruitment process, providers contracted under this mechanism who meet the agency’s requirements may be considered for irregular contracts, which will improve both the quality and stability of the services offered to Special Education students.
Vacancies will be available in the seven educational regions through the Recluta platform ( https://recluta.dde.pr ), until Tuesday, August 5.

The spokesperson for the Popular Democratic Party (PPD) in the House of Representatives, Héctor Ferrer Santiago, called the Secretary of Public Security, Arturo Garffer, and Governor Jenniffer González insensitive after their decision to withdraw federal funds from the municipality of Aguadilla, after Mayor Julio Roldán adopted a public policy of non-collaboration with federal immigration agencies. This was achieved through the approval of Municipal Ordinance 82, which declares the
municipality a sanctuary city.
“It is an act of insensitivity, vindictiveness, and a lack of empathy toward vulnerable communities seeking protection and dignity. The administration of Jenniffer González has taken the coldest and most punitive route: depriving funds of a city that, with courage and humanity, has chosen to protect the most vulnerable instead of persecuting them,” Ferrer said.
Ferrer criticized the administration of Jenniffer González for using public funds as a tool to impose its ideological vision, even if it means putting the safety of entire communities at risk.
“You cannot govern through threats or punishment. Public policies must respond to the well-being of the people, not to political revenge or ideological pressures,” Ferrer stated.
According to reports, the Secretary of Public Security, Arturo Garffer, ordered the cancellation of federal funds allocated to the Aguadilla municipal police, citing a “failure to comply with the principles of interagency cooperation that are fundamental to the implementation and effectiveness of the OPSG program.”
“They talk about municipal autonomy,
but when a mayor makes responsible and fair decisions, they punish him. They talk about security, but they cut resources for those who are doing their jobs with dignity and respect for human rights,” the House spokesperson added.
The Popular Party legislator reiterated his support for the municipality of Aguadilla and all efforts based on the defense of human dignity.
“Protecting civil rights and the security of our communities is not an ideological position; it is a moral obligation. And it is clear that the Governor has not understood this,” Ferrer Santiago stated.

Governor Jenniffer González Colón signed Senate Bill 6 into law on Sunday, establishing the controversial “Universal Recognition of Occupational and Professional Licenses in Puerto Rico Act.”
This law allows professionals with valid licenses from other U.S. jurisdictions to practice in Puerto Rico without having to go through local evaluation processes again. However, real estate agents and engineers have expressed concerns that the new law may oversaturate their fields. The governor argues that this law promotes labor mobility, economic development, and improves the quality of occupational and professional services on the island, while also establishing a clear public policy.
González Colón stated that she plans to work on a draft amendment. “For Puerto Rico, which aims to increase its labor force participation rate and attract Puerto Ricans who have migrated to other U.S. jurisdictions, it is essential to implement portability or reciprocity for both occupational and professional
licenses from other states. At least 20 states nationwide have similar laws,” she said in a written statement.
The law also establishes a list of professions and trades that will be overseen by Examining Boards attached to the Department of State. These professions will be subject to a new uniform occupational licensing process. Recognized professions include certified public accountants, architects, landscape architects, pharmacy assistants, barbers, professional counselors, cosmetologists, dentists, private detectives, electricians, nurses, trainers, hair stylists, photographers, tour guides, pesticide inspectors, legal advocates, sign language interpreters, physical education teachers, auto mechanics, nutritionists, dietitians, optometrists, electrical examiners, plumbers, podiatrists, psychologists, chemists, nail technicians, vocational rehabilitation specialists, speech and language therapists, occupational therapists, and social workers.
All these occupations will follow a uniform procedure for evaluating, granting, denying, or reviewing licenses, in accordance with the guidelines set by the Department of State.

The director of the Puerto Rico Innovation and Technology Service (PRITS), Martin Jiménez, made an official visit to Washington, D.C. to address connectivity issues.
“This visit reaffirms Governor Jenniffer González’s commitment to closing the digital divide and ensuring that all Puerto Ricans have access to modern, resilient, and equitable connectivity. We continue working tirelessly to connect Puerto Rico with the world, promoting local economic growth and innovation,” said Jiménez in a written statement.
The discussion focused on the progress of the submarine cable project, the underground conduit, and updates to the island’s coverage maps, among other topics.
The amendments proposed by the governor include: clear regulatory development for each Examining Board, orientation and outreach programs for employers and professionals, a metrics system to monitor impact (retention, reverse migration), interstate compacts with states receiving Puerto Rican migrants, ensuring reciprocity is mutual, focus on critical areas such as health, establishment of a residency requirement and clear requirements for continuing education on Puerto Rico’s laws and regulations.

Agroup of Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority (PREPA) creditors is appealing a recent Title III bankruptcy court ruling that their $8.5 billion claim against PREPA is a subordinated debt in the separate commonwealth debt adjustment plan and not entitled to payment.
The PREPA Ad Hoc group -comprised of bondholders who refuse to settle their debt with the utility - monolines GoldenTree Asset Management, Syncora Guarantee, National Public Finance Guarantee Corporation, Assured Guaranty, and U.S. Bank National Association as trustee, announced last week they are appealing a July 22 ruling made by Judge Laura Taylor Swain to the U.S. First Circuit Court of Appeals.
The creditors had hoped their claim would be classified as a general unsecured claim, which would allow them a share in a $575 million reserve intended for certain unsecured creditors in the separate commonwealth debt adjustment plan. However, because the judge ruled their claims are deemed subordinated, they do not qualify for payments under the commonwealth debt adjustment plan.
Although this ruling doesn’t directly affect the bondholders’ claims against PREPA right now, it does pave the way for unsecured creditors of the Commonwealth to finally receive payments after several years of waiting since the judge confirmed the commonwealth
debt adjustment plan in 2022.
This situation highlights the difficulties of managing Puerto Rico’s complex five bankruptcies filed under Title III of PROMESA in 2017. Currently, PREPA’s bankruptcy is the only one that remains unresolved.
Judge Swain pointed out that the bondholders did not raise any arguments about the constitutional aspects of their claims against the Commonwealth. If they had, it would have required the court to take a closer look. She mentioned that these bondholders, represented by a team of thirteen law firms, are experienced and chose not to discuss these constitutional issues in their case. Doing so could have caused further delays for unsecured creditors waiting for their claims to be resolved.

Residents of a rural town in Montana tried to return to regular life Saturday, with some trepidation, as the search for a gunman who opened fire inside a neighborhood bar, killing four people, continued with little new information.
Authorities said that the suspect, a 45-year-old Army veteran named Michael P. Brown, fled into the brushy foothills after the attack at the Owl Bar in Anaconda on Friday morning. They urged residents and business owners to go about their business over the weekend, with caution. Stores reopened, though the streets of Anaconda, a former copper smelting town near Butte, were somewhat quiet.

The authorities in Montana were still searching on Saturday afternoon for an Army veteran they say opened fire inside a neighborhood bar a day earlier, killing four in what an official described as a senseless act of violence.
“Last night was the first night I locked my doors in probably 20 years,” said Mark McDonald, 69, who was born and raised in Anaconda and was bartending at Thompson’s Bar downtown Saturday. “I will lock my doors tonight,” he added, though he said he was confident that authorities would find the suspect soon.

A bartender at the Owl Bar and three patrons were killed in the attack, officials said Saturday, without naming the victims. The tavern is a local dive where regulars play pool and drink beer. On Saturday, it was cordoned off with yellow police tape. Someone had placed two small bouquets of flowers against a lamppost outside.
“I feel kind of numb,” said Doug Kerr, who was out with his dog, Ellie. He recently moved to the area from Dallas after having fallen in love with the small-town atmosphere of Anaconda, in Deer Lodge County. “You can walk around and everybody knows the name of your dog.”
The search — on foot, in vehicles and by helicopter — centered on an area west of town, near Stumptown Road, where authorities found an abandoned white pickup truck Friday. It was unclear how the suspect fled; officials said Saturday that a truck they towed had not been involved in the shooting. The dense terrain made searching difficult.
The killings occurred about 10:30 a.m. local time Friday. Witnesses said they heard gunshots in the bar. Brown was well known around Anaconda, and social media posts show he had been to the establishment before. Records show that Brown lived two houses down from the Owl.
On Saturday, the Division of Criminal Investigation at the Montana Department of Justice provided a photograph taken from security camera footage on the day of the attack. It showed a gaunt man, shirtless and in dark shorts, walking barefoot down a set of stairs, apparently leaving the bar.
“We’re doing everything we can to find and bring this
Relatives of Brown described him as shy, loving and long dealing with mental illness, including diagnosed schizophrenia, that worsened after his mother died in 2021. A sister who spoke on the condition that her name not be used said that he was so paranoid that he refused to own a cellphone.
Brown joined the Army in January 2001 and served in Iraq between 2004 and 2005 before leaving the service in May 2005 as a sergeant, an Army spokesperson said. He was in the Montana National Guard for about two years until March 2008.
Two relatives of Brown said he had returned from the Army with physical ailments and severe post-traumatic stress disorder that gave him night terrors. They also said he was later diagnosed with bipolar disorder in addition to schizophrenia.
The sister said that she and other family members had tried to get help for Brown from the Department of Veterans Affairs but that little could be done without his cooperation.
One of Brown’s other siblings, William, was convicted of homicide in 2001, according to public records and to the sister. The two brothers have not talked in years, she said, in part because Michael Brown did not have a cellphone. William Brown, who was sentenced to more than 100 years, remains in prison, according to a Montana Department of Corrections database.
McDonald used to work at the Owl and remembered the suspect coming in every Saturday to order a beer or a soda. If Brown fled to the foothills, McDonald added, he did not expect to ever see him in town again.

The Trump administration’s agenda suffered another setback late Friday when an appeals court upheld a decision that temporarily halts federal agents from making immigration-related arrests in the Los Angeles area without probable cause.
A three-judge panel of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals affirmed a lower court’s finding that the raids appeared to exclusively rely on a person’s race and other factors, like speaking Spanish.
The administration’s immigration raids have stirred protests and fear for many Latinos across the city, its suburbs and agricultural regions. The panel’s decision merely allows a temporary restraining order that had been imposed by the lower court to remain in place. It curtails, for now, the farreaching operations that began in June as the case proceeds through the courts.
Judge Maame E. Frimpong of U.S. District Court in Los Angeles has scheduled a hearing in late September as she weighs a longer-lasting order known as a preliminary injunction.
In their ruling Friday night, the appellate judges wrote that the plaintiffs “are likely to succeed” in showing that federal agents made arrests based on how people looked, how they spoke and where they lived or worked.
Civil rights groups led by the American Civil Liberties Union of Southern California and Public Counsel filed suit July 2 accusing the Trump administration of unconstitutional sweeps since early June. Nearly 3,000 people have been arrested.
American citizens and immigrants who are legally in the United States have been caught in the dragnet, which fueled protests in Los Angeles and across the country. President

(Tierney L. Cross/The New York Times)
Donald Trump had said that other Democratic-led cities would also be targeted, suggesting that the aggressive enforcement tactics deployed in Los Angeles might be replicated elsewhere.
In their 61-page ruling, the appellate judges, all of whom were appointed by Democratic presidents, said it was likely that the arrests were made without “reasonable suspicion.”
The judges added that because the arrests were “part of a pattern of officially sanctioned behavior,” they were “likely to recur” without court intervention.
Mohammad Tajsar, an attorney with the ACLU representing the plaintiffs, said the decision was “further confirmation that this administration’s paramilitary invasion of Los Angeles violated the Constitution and caused irreparable injury across the region.”
In a statement on the ruling, Tricia McLaughlin, a spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security, said, “unelected judges are undermining the will of the American people.”
Mayor Karen Bass of Los Angeles, who has repeatedly called on the White House to end the aggressive enforcement actions, called the ruling “a victory for the rule of law and for the city of Los Angeles” and called on residents to “stand together against this administration’s efforts to break up families who contribute every single day to the life, the culture and the economy of our great city.”
The city and county of Los Angeles and seven other municipalities joined the lawsuit after heavily armed federal agents, escorted by National Guard troops, marched through MacArthur Park, in the heart of a bustling Latino enclave near downtown Los Angeles, on July 7 in a show of force.
The government now has two options. It can ask all the active 9th Circuit judges to reconsider the panel’s Friday night decision, or it could ask the Supreme Court to issue a stay of Frimpong’s order.
The judge issued her order July 11, saying that “roving patrols” of federal agents were making arrests in violation of
the Fourth Amendment.
The Trump administration filed an emergency request to pause the order, arguing that it had undermined its enforcement efforts.
At a hearing July 28, the three 9th Circuit judges seemed skeptical as they questioned a Justice Department lawyer about the administration’s tactics.
The lawyer, Yaakov Roth, denied there was a policy to target people in the manner described by the plaintiffs, insisting that detentions were made with probable cause.
Judge Jennifer Sung, who was appointed by President Joe Biden, asked him, “What is the harm to be told not to do something that you claim you already are not doing?”
Roth replied that the government objected to broad restrictions on whom it decides to detain and that cases should be decided on an individual basis. He also said that the order had a chilling effect on agents, who could be subject to contempt charges if it was later determined that they violated the order.
In addition, Roth said, there might be instances where factors, such as someone’s inability to speak English, could support “reasonable suspicion.”
Roth was repeatedly asked whether the Trump administration had set a quota of 3,000 immigration arrests a day, which put pressure on agents. Stephen Miller, a senior White House official who is an architect of the immigration crackdown, cited that number on Fox News in May.
“I’m just trying to understand what would motivate the officers who did the roundup of aliens here to grab such a large number of people so quickly, and without marshaling reasonable suspicion to detain,” said Judge Ronald M. Gould, who was appointed by President Bill Clinton.
Roth said he did not know about a quota, and the judges ordered him to file a letter with the court addressing the issue.
The letter, filed July 30, denied that a quota was in place. In the letter, the administration said it “conducts its enforcement activities based on individualized assessments, available resources, and evolving operational priorities — not volume metrics.”
The administration has criticized the lower court’s ruling, stating in court documents that it was based on “nothing more than media speculation and a series of declarations by individuals who say they were detained by federal agents.”
Videos of arrests have shown agents appearing to randomly grab Latinos in working-class neighborhoods.
In early June, the Trump administration began flooding Los Angeles with officers from Immigration and Customs Enforcement and other agencies, like the Border Patrol, that traditionally do not detain people in the country’s interior. Groups of masked men, often without insignia to identify their agency, arrested people at bus stops, car washes, swap meets and outside Home Depot, among other places.
In the weeks since Frimpong’s order, enforcement around Los Angeles has abated, and the Trump administration has released all but about 250 of the nearly 5,000 troops who were deployed to assist federal agents and help quell protests. But in the San Diego area, which is not covered by the judge’s order, raids have continued to occur, such as at a Home Depot in Encinitas on July 27.

Zohran Mamdani got three chances to repudiate the expression “globalize the intifada” in a weekend interview with NBC’s Kristen Welker. It would have been easy, and politically smart, for the Democratic candidate for New York mayor to say that he’d been educated about the phrase’s violent connotation and that he regretted not rejecting it sooner. Instead, he ducked each time, saying that although he does not use those words himself, he would decline to “police” the language of others.
So give Mamdani credit for this: He has the courage of his convictions. Now he ought to bear the responsibility for them, too.
I was a journalist living and working in Jerusalem when I got a taste of what the word “intifada,” Arabic for “shaking off,” means in practice. I had just moved into an apartment in the Rehavia neighborhood when in March 2002 my local coffee shop, Café Moment, was the target of a suicide bombing.
My wife, whom I hadn’t yet met, was due to be in the cafe when it blew up but had changed plans at the last minute. Eleven people were murdered and 54 were wounded that night. Multiple perpetrators, members of Hamas, were arrested and then released nine years later, in an exchange for Israeli hostage Gilad Shalit.
Two weeks later, I was at the Passover Seder of a
friend in central Israel when the news filtered in that there had been a bombing of a Seder at a hotel in Netanya. Thirty civilians were murdered there and 140 were injured. Among the dead were Sarah LevyHoffman, Clara Rosenberger and Frieda Britvich, all of them Auschwitz survivors.
Two days after that there was an attack on a Jerusalem supermarket. Two were murdered: a security guard named Haim Smadar, a father of six, who stopped the bomber from coming into the store, and a high school senior named Rachel Levy. Rachel would have been about 40 now had she only not been at the wrong place at the wrong instant.
Life in Jerusalem was punctuated over the following months by suicide bombings that occurred with almost metronomic regularity. Among those I’ll never forget: The Hebrew University campus bombing, which left nine murdered and 85 injured, and the bombing of Café Hillel, another neighborhood favorite of mine. Seven people were murdered there, including David Applebaum, an emergency-room doctor who had treated scores of terrorism victims, and his 20-year-old daughter Nava. She was going to be married the next day.
On Jan. 29, 2004, at 8:48 a.m., I was fussing over my newborn daughter in her crib when I heard a loud boom and saw a plume of black smoke rise from Azza Street, behind my apartment. I was at the scene within three minutes and wrote down what I saw later that evening.
The ground was covered in glass; every window of the bus had been blasted. Inside the wreckage, I could see three very still corpses and one body that rocked back and forth convulsively. Outside the bus, another three corpses were strewn on the ground, one face-up, two face-down. There was a large piece of torso ripped from its body, which I guessed was the suicide bomber’s. Elsewhere on the ground, more chunks of human flesh: a leg, an arm, smaller bits, pools of blood.
In the carnage, I failed to spot a reporter who worked for me, Erik Schechter. His injuries were described as “moderate,” meaning shrapnel wounds, vascular damage and a shattered kneecap. He spent months in recovery.
There were many more atrocities in Israel over following years, culminating in the orgy of murder, rape and kidnapping that was Oct. 7, 2023. But the intifada also was globalized. One woman murdered and five others injured at the Jewish Federation office in Seattle in 2006 by an assailant who told eyewitnesses he was “angry
at Israel.” Six Jews murdered by terrorists at the Chabad House in Mumbai, India, in 2008. Four Jews murdered in a kosher market in Paris in 2015. A young couple murdered in May after leaving a reception at Washington’s Capital Jewish Museum by a killer yelling “Free Palestine.” An elderly American woman, Karen Diamond, who died of burn wounds last week after being the victim, with at least 12 others, of a firebombing attack in Boulder, Colorado, by another assailant also yelling “Free Palestine.”
There are rich and legitimate debates to be had about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and U.S. policy toward it. None of us should look away at the devastating toll the war in the Gaza Strip exacts on Palestinian civilians. And nobody has a monopoly on truth or virtue: Those who want to condemn Israeli policy are fully within their rights.
But a major political candidate who plainly refuses to condemn the phrase “globalize the intifada” isn’t participating in legitimate democratic debate; he is giving moral comfort to people who deliberately murder innocent Jews.
There are liberals and progressives who’ll continue to make excuses for Mamdani. They will argue that his views on “globalize the intifada” are beside the point of his agenda for New York. They will observe that he has a predictable share of far-left Jewish supporters. They will play semantic games about the original meaning of “intifada.”
To those supporters, one can say only good luck. They’re making Donald Trump’s case about the radical direction of too much of the Democratic Party better than he ever could.

On the most basic level “Jaws” is a movie about a relentless great white shark, terrorizing the residents of a beach community during a Fourth of July weekend. It was the razor-toothed beast who adorned the onslaught of T-shirts and other merchandise when the film came out 50 years ago, premiering in June 1975 and all but creating what we think of as the modern blockbuster. It was the shark who got the two-note tuba treatment from John Williams’ ominous score.
But the new National Geographic documentary “Jaws @ 50,” now streaming on Disney+ and Hulu, makes one thing as clear as a summer day on Amity Island: “Jaws” is primarily about flawed people, not a scary fish. The real villain is not the shark, who, after all, would be happy to be left alone. (As shark conservation biologist Candace Fields says in the documentary, “The sharks are not infesting the water. The sharks live in the water”).
The bad guy is the avaricious mayor (Murray Hamilton), who insists on keeping the beaches open during peak season rather than shutting down for safety. The three heroes — police chief Brody (Roy Scheider), sea captain Quint (Robert Shaw), and oceanographer Hooper (Richard Dreyfuss) — form a carefully drawn triangle, written with a depth that has eluded most post-“Jaws” spectacles to this day.
For Laurent Bouzereau, the author and filmmaker who directed “Jaws @ 50,” the human touches were what made “Jaws” a classic, and what guided a young Steven Spielberg as he turned Peter Benchley’s bestselling novel into a runaway hit movie.
“The humanity of Steven’s approach to everything in his career started emerging in a movie like ‘Jaws,’ where it’s much more about people’s reaction to a crisis rather than the crisis itself,” Bouzereau said in a video interview. “You feel like you know these people, and they all stand out.”
You might not peg Cameron Crowe, known for dramatic comedies like “Jerry Maguire” and “Almost Famous,” as a “Jaws” aficionado. But there he is in “Jaws @ 50,” alongside the likes of James Cameron, Jordan Peele, Guillermo del Toro, and other
heavyweights, including Spielberg himself.
“Every character has a little bit of an arc, a little bit of a story,” Crowe says in the documentary. “So when they enter the picture, you’re interested in them, and when they exit the picture, you miss them.’’
He elaborated in a video interview:
“It’s totally about the people. It’s a character-rich movie disguised as an action epic.”
Chief among those people, of course, is the heroic, mismatched trio aboard the Orca. Brody is the transplanted urban cop who hates the water; one of the movie’s lowkey funniest moments comes when he takes out his pistol and starts firing at the shark, like it’s a violent street criminal. Quint, the gruff, bombastic but strangely poetic seafarer, and Hooper, the educated, sarcastic shark expert, can’t stand each other but eventually develop a grudging mutual respect. (The documentary suggests Shaw and Dreyfuss didn’t care for each other, either.)
The emphasis on character extended to the look of “Jaws” as well — especially in the second half of the movie, when Brody, Quint and Hooper take to the open water in pursuit of their prey.
The production designer, Joe Alves, who also appears in the documentary, recalled Spielberg’s mandate to never show any other people or boats once the hunt commenced.
“We wanted the three guys isolated,” Alves said in a telephone interview. “Three guys with totally different personalities and this big shark, which Steven didn’t want to overuse. That’s why it worked.” He recalled that Spielberg refused to shoot when any other boat was visible on the water, a stance that didn’t please Universal executives, especially as the movie went over schedule and over budget.
Which brings us to the other main character in Bouzereau’s story: Spielberg himself.
As “Jaws @ 50” shows, the future mogul was a mess as the press devoured reports of the production’s difficulties like chum in the water. Extreme doubt set it. Panic attacks ensued — night sweats, nightmares, uncontrollable shaking. Spielberg had only two movies to his name, the made-for-TV “Duel” (1971) and “The Sugarland Express” (1974). His career was
on the line.
In a video interview, Wendy Benchley, the widow of the “Jaws” novelist and coscreenwriter, pointed out that both “Jaws” and “Jaws @ 50” are concerned with how the sudden appearance of a ravenous shark might disrupt the daily routine of island life. Peter Benchley spent his childhood summers in Nantucket, the basis for the novel and movie’s fictional Amity; Spielberg shot the movie primarily on Martha’s Vineyard, and ended up casting many nonprofessional locals in speaking roles and as extras.
“Jaws,” the movie, has the bustling interpersonal authenticity of a Robert Altman film, with participants encouraged to infuse proceedings with local color (and, in some cases, to provide their own dialogue). Wendy Benchley sees this quality as central to the novel, the movie, and, now, the docu-
mentary, which features interviews with minor players enlisted from the Martha’s Vineyard community.
“Laurent really captured the personal side of the local people,” she said. “I love that when Peter wrote the book, he concentrated on the characters, and the Nantucket character. He was a Nantucket guy, and he concentrated on people’s reaction to a menace that they can’t control. That was the heart of the book for him.”
Fittingly, sharks — the three mechanical versions, and some inserts of the real deal — are seldom seen in “Jaws.” This is partially because of well-known technical problems but also by design.
The monsters we can’t quite see can be the scariest of all. And, as Spielberg says in the documentary, “Without the people, you wouldn’t give a hang about the shark.”
With more than half of second quarter earnings reported and stocks near record highs, company results have reassured investors about the artificial intelligence trade that has energized Wall Street, even if tariff worries curtailed buying.
With results in from 297 of the S&P 500 companies as of Thursday, year-on-year earnings growth for the second quarter is now estimated at 9.8%, up from 5.8% estimated growth on July 1, according to LSEG data.
Next week investors will get a peek at earnings from Dow Jones Industrial Average constituents Disney, McDonald’s and Caterpillar, for a look at the broader economy. Strong profit reports for these companies could propel the Dow, trading just shy of its December record high, to a fresh peak.
Some 81% of the companies have beaten analyst expectations on earnings, above the 76% average for the past four quarters.
“The earnings season has been unambiguously better than expected,” Art Hogan, chief market strategist at B. Riley Wealth in Boston, said.
The strength of corporate earnings is particularly reassuring for investors after the pummeling sentiment took in the prior quarter due to the twin threats of tariffs and worries over flagging economic growth.
“The first quarter was a bit more mixed and you had some questionable economic data ... which I think gave the market some pause,” said Tim Ghriskey, senior portfolio strategist at Ingalls & Snyder in New York.
“But the second quarter seems to have just been a turnaround,” Ghriskey said.
The strength of results for names linked to the artificial intelligence trade - the investment thesis that AI will be a transformative force, driving a significant portion of future economic growth and company profits - is particularly heartening, investors and analysts said.
“Overall it has been mega caps, growth/technology/AI that is driving a lot of the results,” Ghriskey said.
“This is where we want to be exposed in terms of companies ... we’re at maximum equity exposures and we’re comfortable there.”
Having boosted the market for several quarters, the trade ran into rough waters at the start of the year as the emergence of Chinese-founded artificial intelligence startup DeepSeek rattled investors, stoking concerns over heightened competition that
could disrupt the dominance of established tech giants at the heart of the AI trade, including Nvidia.
Strong results from Microsoft and Meta Platforms reassured investors that massive bets on AI are paying off.
Worries over AI demand appear overblown, Macro Hive research analyst Viresh Kanabar said.
The trade related tumult earlier this year prompted many investors to pare equity exposure, particularly to higher-risk growth stocks.
Even after the market rebound - the S&P 500 is up about 6% for the year and near a record high - institutional investors have been slow to return to equities. Overall, investors’ equity posi-

Strength in earnings from AI and technology names could draw more investors and lift markets further in coming weeks, analysts said.
“If you are trying to beat your benchmark and you were underweight any of the AI names you have to chase them,” B. Riley Wealth’s Hogan said.
After S&P 500’s 2.2% gain in July, the seasonally volatile months of August and September, markets might face some shortterm turbulence, Hogan said. Historically, August has marked a pick-up in stock market gyrations that peaks in October.

For months, the Israeli government had focused on negotiating a two-phased deal for a 60-day ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and the release of some hostages, leaving discussions about a permanent end to the war for a later stage.
With the talks now at an impasse, U.S. and Israeli officials appear to be sharply changing their tone by signaling that they will push for a comprehensive deal. But Israel and Hamas remain far apart, and analysts said this new approach would also face steep challenges.
The shift, at least in rhetoric, comes as the Israeli government faces rising domestic pressure to secure the release of hostages still held in Gaza. Israel believes that about 20 are still alive and that the bodies of 30 others remain in the enclave. Videos released over the weekend showed two living captives looking emaciated and frail, shocking many Israelis and sparking fear among the hostages’ families.
The Israeli government has also come under mounting international criticism over the mass hunger that has spread through Gaza’s population of about 2 million people after Israel imposed strict restrictions in recent months on the entry of aid.
Israel has continued launching military strikes on Gaza, even as it has facilitated the entry of more aid into Gaza in recent days. The Palestine Red Crescent Society said on Sunday that Israeli artillery had hits its offices in Khan Younis, killing one of the aid group’s staffers and injuring others. The Israeli military did not immediately comment.
Steve Witkoff, the Trump administration’s special envoy to the Middle East, who is visiting the region, met with families of Israeli hostages on Saturday and told them that President Donald Trump now wants to see all the living hostages released at once.
“No piecemeal deals, that doesn’t work,” he said, according to an audio recording of part of the meeting published by the Ynet Hebrew news site.
“Now we think that we have to shift this negotiation to ‘all or nothing’ — everybody comes home,” he said. “We have a plan around it,” he added, without elaborating. A participant in the meeting confirmed that Witkoff made such remarks.
Israel and Hamas do not negotiate directly.
Instead, negotiations for a ceasefire between the two sides have run through intermediaries: the United States, Qatar and Egypt.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel and Trump are said to be working on a new proposal that would involve presenting Hamas with an ultimatum, according to reports in the Israeli news media that were confirmed Sunday by a person familiar with the matter. The White House was not immediately available for comment.
Under the terms of the ultimatum, Hamas would have to release the remaining hostages in exchange for Palestinian prisoners and agree to terms to end the war that include the group’s disarmament. Otherwise, the Israeli military would continue its campaign.
Mahmoud Mardawi, a Hamas official, said the Palestinian armed group had yet to receive a formal Israeli proposal for a comprehensive deal from Arab mediators. He said that while Hamas supported such an agreement in principle, it would not disarm — which has long been a core Israeli condition.
“This has been our demand from the beginning: an end to the war, the release of prisoners, and day-after arrangements in the Gaza Strip — a clear and comprehensive deal,” Mardawi said in a phone interview.
The prospects of any rapid advancement toward such a deal appear dim.
Hamas has consistently rejected Israel’s terms for ending the war throughout the negotiations. On Saturday, the group said in a statement that it would not disarm unless a Palestinian state was established, despite a call from Arab states last week for the group to do so.
The Israeli government opposes Palestinian statehood. On Sunday, Itamar Ben-Gvir, the Israeli national security minister, visited the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound, which Jews revere as the Temple Mount, long a tinderbox for Israeli-Palestinian tensions.
“It’s important to convey from this place that we should immediately conquer Gaza, exercise our sovereignty there, and eliminate every last Hamas member,” Ben-Gvir said from the site, in a video shared by his office.
Many Israelis say they support a comprehensive deal to return all the hostages and end the war. But many are skeptical that such a deal can be achieved under the conditions set by the hard-line Israeli government, which has vowed to continue fighting until Hamas surrenders or is destroyed.
Given the firm positions of both sides, an Israeli and American push for a comprehensive deal may not bring an agreement closer, according to analysts.
“Hamas is essentially saying to Israel: ‘If you want the 20 living hostages out, give us a
full victory,’” said Ehud Yaari, an Israel-based fellow of the Washington Institute for Near East Policy, an independent research group.
Hamas’ terms are far beyond what Netanyahu would accept, Yaari said. But, he added, the prime minister “has to keep convincing the Israeli public and his own voters that he is doing everything he can, and he has to reassure the families of the hostages.”
Efrat Machikawa, a relative of a released hostage, said that reports attributed to anonymous Israeli officials about there being a comprehensive deal on the table were “empty slogans.”
“The preconditions set by Israel are unrealistic and unworkable,” she said, speaking at a rally Saturday in Tel Aviv.
Mardawi said that Hamas saw little reason to negotiate with Israel given the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza. “What is the point of talks when people are dying of starvation?” he said.
The hunger crisis worsened after Israel’s government imposed severe restrictions on aid entering the territory. Israel has accused aid agencies of mismanaging supplies and Hamas of diverting aid. But some Israeli military officials said the military never found proof that Hamas had systematically stolen aid from the United Nations, the biggest supplier of emergency assistance to Gaza for most of the war.
More than 60,000 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza since the war began, including thousands of children, according to the Gaza Health Ministry, which does not distinguish between civilians and combatants.
The Hamas-led attack on Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, which ignited the war, killed about 1,200 people, according to the Israeli government, and about 250 people were taken captive to Gaza. More than 100 hostages were freed during previous ceasefires and Israeli forces operating in the enclave have retrieved the bodies of some others.
Ruby Chen, the father of American-Israeli soldier Itay Chen, who was abducted by Hamas, attended the meeting Saturday with Witkoff. Chen’s son is now presumed dead by Israeli authorities.
He said Witkoff had discussed the need for a comprehensive deal, rather than a partial deal. “After six months, they’ve now come to the understanding that it’s not possible to execute it,” said Chen. “We lost six months on this.”

Indian officials said Saturday that they would keep purchasing cheap oil from Russia despite a threat of penalties from President Donald Trump, the latest twist in an issue that New Delhi thought it had settled.
The defiance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government reflected increasing frustration with a relationship that was once much praised but has been souring rapidly. There is a growing sense in India that its leaders should not allow increasingly volatile American policymaking to shape its choices on vital energy supplies for its huge population, 1.4 billion people.
Trump said last week that as part of his latest round of tariffs, he would impose an unspecified penalty on India in addition to a tariff rate of 25% if the country did not cut off its imports of Russian crude oil. On Friday, he appeared to echo reports of a recent dip in the arrival of Russian oil to India.
“I understand that India is no longer going to be buying oil from Russia,” he told reporters. “That’s what I heard. I don’t know if that’s right or not. That is a good step. We will see what happens.”
On Saturday, two senior Indian officials said there had been no change in policy. One official said the government had “not given any direction to oil companies” to cut back imports from Russia.
At a news conference a day earlier, Randhir Jaiswal, the spokesperson for India’s foreign ministry, declined to address Trump’s threat directly. But he suggested there would be no change of policy regarding Russia.
“Our bilateral relationships with various countries stand on their own merit and should not be seen from the prism of a third country,” Jaiswal said. “India and Russia have a steady and time-tested partnership.”
Trump did not say what penalty India might face if it were to defy his call to cut off Russian oil imports. Some officials and analysts have said that Trump’s focus on India’s purchase of Russian oil could reflect his frustrations with Russia over lack of progress on a settlement with Ukraine, or may be a negotiating tactic as India and the United States try to conclude the early phases of a trade agreement.
where Russia will sell to China at cheap prices, and so you would have China being the ultimate beneficiary.”
India has drastically increased its purchases of Russian oil since the Kremlin invaded Ukraine. Russia is now the source of more than one-third of India’s oil imports — up from less than 1% before the war. It brings in about 2 million barrels of crude oil a day, making it the second largest importer of Russian oil, after China.
New Delhi faced strong pressure in the early months after the Ukraine war began to cut down on its economic ties with Russia. That pressure continued as Indian oil imports spiked.
But by the second year of the war, the tone began to shift on the imports of India, the world’s most populous nation. It appeared that India had convinced its American and European allies that its expanded purchase of cheap Russian oil — at a price cap imposed by the European Union and Group of 7 — was good for keeping global oil prices in check.
Early last year, senior officials at the U.S. Treasury Department visiting New Delhi said India was working within a formula that was proving effective: Keep Russian oil flowing into the global supply but at a cheap enough price that it would shrink Russia’s revenue.
“They bought Russian oil because we wanted somebody to buy Russian oil at a price cap; that was not a violation,” Eric Garcetti, then the U.S. ambassador to New Delhi, said last year. “It was actually the design of the policy because, as a commodity, we didn’t want the oil prices going up, and they fulfilled that.”
For India’s government, the choice is not easy.
India depends on imports for nearly 90% of the energy needs of its enormous population. While it has diversified the sources of its oil imports — it buys from around 40 countries, officials say — its supplies have frequently been affected by U.S. actions against some of the largest exporters. The United States, in the past, has successfully pressured India to give up oil purchases from Iran and Venezuela.
Replacing Russian oil with new sources could bring additional costs, too. Closer sources of oil, like Saudi Arabia, for example, sell at a higher price to Asian countries because of a policy called the “Asian premium” maintained by the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries.
En Caguas, Puerto Rico, el 23 de julio de 2025.
Analysts and officials in New Delhi said that if the move was intended to pressure Russia, its efficacy was questionable, considering that China and Turkey, two other major importers of Russian oil, have not faced similar penalties. Agreements for such supplies also involve long-term contracts and logistics arrangements that are difficult to curtail overnight, one official said — especially given that Trump has expressed doubts about his own measures on Russia and is prone to changing his mind.
“What we also have to keep in mind is that even if India may cut to zero, China is not going to,” said Pankaj Saran, a former Indian deputy national security adviser and ambassador to Moscow. “You will have a kind of a bizarre situation
Similarly, a senior Indian official said, India faced major losses on its investments in Venezuelan oil when Trump imposed sanctions on that country, only for the Biden administration to relax the sanctions — and then reimpose them later.
Saran said the choice was not as easy for Indian policymakers this time and they might “wait and watch” to see if Trump’s threats are a fleeting pressure tactic.
“Given how sensitive the domestic economy is to oil prices, you have to ensure that you not just get diverse sources of imports but also, you know, the cheapest,” he said. “It is, in a sense, a national security imperative.”

About 5 million aboveground pools are being recalled, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said last week, citing a design flaw that has been connected to the drowning deaths of at least nine children since 2007.
The pools, which are made by Bestway, Intex and Polygroup, have a compression strap on the outside that children can use as a foothold to climb into them without a ladder or a step, the agency said.
The strap — meant to maintain the structural integrity of the pool — wraps around the pool’s vertical support legs, creating a safety hazard, according to the commission, which ad-
vised owners to immediately contact the manufacturer of their pool model to get a repair kit.
The pools were sold at retailers in the United States and Canada, including Walmart, Amazon, Costco and Target, some going back to 2002, officials said. Others were purchased as recently as 2025. The pools are 4 feet tall and higher.
In a joint statement Monday, the three companies that made the pools said they were committed to customer safety and had been actively engaged in continuously reviewing and updating product safety standards for many years. Each included a product recall notice on its website.
“The safe use of our products is important to us, and we are working together to get the
word out about this recall and create a seamless process for our customers to participate,” the companies said.
The companies said that they had started working with the commission on a new safety standard in 2023 and that it was finalized in May. A representative for the companies also noted that Intex changed its pool design in 2012.
From 2007 to 2022, nine children between the ages of 22 months and 3 years drowned after gaining access to the pools by using the compression strap as a foothold, according to the commission. The drownings occurred in California, Texas, Florida, Michigan, Wisconsin and Missouri.
The commission said that it was also aware of at least three other episodes, in 2011

President Donald Trump leans forward in a limousine, takes a long puff from a cigarette and flashes a wide grin. An aggressive rap song blasts over the stereo as a group of young women bob around him.
No one would mistake the otherworldly scene for reality — and they shouldn’t, because it was made by artificial intelligence. Yet it caused a stir when it was released online last year, skewering Trump, former Vice President Kamala Harris and others using lifelike AI replicas, soaring to more than 16 million views on YouTube.
It was the biggest hit yet by the Dor Brothers, a video production studio that has gained notoriety online — along with more than 100 million views across platforms — by fully embracing AI.
The studio is now among the most popular AI-powered artists on the internet for its roster of subversive videos released on YouTube and then circulated rapidly across social media, which are made entirely by AI tools. It said its revenue crossed $1 million last year for its commercial projects, including consulting work for brands that are increasingly curious about AI. Joe Rogan, the world’s most popular podcaster, called the studio’s work “incredible.”
Its videos have attracted plenty of criticism, too, with some viewers dismissing the work as “AI slop.” Rival AI studios have made work with clearer commercial appeal — like one studio that made a Toys “R” Us commercial last year — while others have made short films
that rival Hollywood productions, including a gripping retelling of a Ukrainian drone strike that Variety compared to “Mission: Impossible.”
The Dor Brothers and other so-called AI artists are part of an explosive new era for video — one that wants to do away with the cameras, set designers, makeup artists and even actors who have long been essential for films and television shows. Within the next few years, they expect the tools will give any artists with a vision and a keyboard the power to make whatever videos they can imagine.
“It’s obvious, things are shifting and changing,” Yonatan Dor, the 28-year-old head of the studio, said in an interview from Lisbon, Portugal. “We need to adapt as a species to the technology.”
Many artists loathe AI-powered image generators and video creators, saying they produce cheap imitations of art by plagiarizing the copyrighted material the machines are trained on. (The New York Times has sued OpenAI, the maker of ChatGPT, for copyright infringement.)
AI artists like Dor argue that the tools are actually a purer form of expression, offering the most direct link between the artist’s brain and the end result, without the compromises required in large productions or the constraints that come with complex shoots.
“The only thing that will matter is creative ideas, unique ideas, unique creators,” Dor said about the future of AI video. “The rest will be irrelevant.”
There are signs that the art world is catching up to the AI boom. Runway, an AI video company, held its third annual film festival this
year at New York City’s Lincoln Center, assembling a jury of film industry veterans. The Dor Brothers’ work may seem juvenile in comparison: This year’s winning entry offered a mesmerizing essay on the nature of art itself, called “Total Pixel Space.” Everything from the video to the transfixing narration was made by AI.
Dor got his start making videos the oldfashioned way, with film crews and expensive budgets. He stumbled onto an early AI image generator in early 2022 and became hooked on the technology, believing it could bring his creative ideas to life without the hassle of film production. He spent eight to 12 hours a day creating AI images, selling his services online. When the next generation of generators came out, allowing users to turn text and images into full videos, Dor was in the perfect position to capitalize.
In “Influenders,” an AI-generated video the studio released in May, the Dor Brothers created a world where war was wreaking havoc across America. Dor populated his scenes with AI-generated social media influencers who narrate the proceedings with an eerie enthusiasm — a satirical commentary on today’s omnipresent influencer culture.
“It all starts with old-school creativity,” Dor said. “We come up with an idea — sometimes through brainstorming; other times it just hits someone on the team and we develop it together. Once we have the concept, we begin testing.”
Their process starts with a chatbot like ChatGPT, where they ask the AI system to create prompts for videos based on some basic in-
and 2012, in which children climbed into the pools using the compression straps.
It was not clear why a recall notice for the pools had not been issued sooner.
On Monday, a spokesperson for the commission declined to comment further about the recall.
Owners can find their pool’s model number and brand name on the outside liner, the commission said.
They are eligible for a free repair kit, which uses a rope at ground level that attaches to each of the pool’s vertical support poles. Once the rope is secure, pool owners can cut away the compression strap without compromising the pool’s structural integrity, the commission said.
Dor,

structions. The chatbot offers a mix of ideas, and the AI artists select and edit their favorites. They input those prompts into a video generator like Runway or Google’s Veo 3. The systems typically spit out a few versions at a time, giving the studio a chance to suggest tweaks or try again. They sometimes try hundreds of versions before a video is complete, Dor said.
Dor expects that, in the near future, the tools will allow him to upload specific characters — a voice, a face, a wardrobe — and be able to animate a consistent version of the AI person through different scenes.

Dwight Muhammad Qawi, who found a redemptive path through boxing, taking up the sport while in prison in the 1970s and becoming a world champion in two weight classes in the 1980s, died Friday in Baltimore. He was 72.
His death, in a nursing home, was confirmed by his sister, Wanda King, who said he had been diagnosed with dementia five years ago.
At age 19, Qawi (pronounced KAHwee) was convicted of armed robbery and incarcerated at Rahway State Prison in New Jersey. He joined the prison’s boxing program and was released in 1978 after serving 5 1/2 years. Shortly after, while on probation, he was convicted of assault and battery.
Sentencing guidelines called for at least 15 years for a second offense, Peter J. Coruzzi, then a Superior Court judge in Camden, New Jersey, who sentenced Qawi, told Sports Illustrated in 1981.
Qawi began his professional boxing career with a win, a loss and a draw, having never fought as an amateur. His managers asked Coruzzi for leniency, and he consented, sentencing him to five years of probation.
“I remember him standing in front of me, tears streaming down his cheeks,” Coruzzi told Pat Putnam of Sports Illustrated. “I saw something in him. Fighters, judges, robbers, we’re all human. Perhaps we should all take a deeper look at our fellow man.”
(The judge possessed his own frailties. In 1982, he was convicted of accepting or soliciting $47,000 in bribes in exchange for giving lenient sentences, in cases not
involving Qawi. He was disbarred in 1984.)
Given a second chance, Qawi, then known as Dwight Braxton before converting to Islam in 1982, channeled his aggressions between the ropes of a boxing ring. He returned to Rahway in September 1981, not as an inmate but as the opponent of a light heavyweight contender, James Scott, his former prison sparring partner.
The bout, broadcast on national television, went 10 rounds, and Qawi maintained control while winning by unanimous decision. After the fight, eager to get beyond the walls that once held him, Qawi hastily left the dressing room without showering, saying, “Man, I’m getting the hell out of here,” Larry Hazzard, the fight’s referee, recalled in an interview.
Three months later, in December 1981, Qawi fought a title match against Matthew Saad Muhammad, the World Boxing Council’s light heavyweight champion. By then, Qawi had improved his record to 15-1-1, but his payday was only $50,000, compared with the $425,000 that Saad Muhammad received, a sum set beforehand, for what was his ninth title defense.
The day before the fight, Qawi told Sports Illustrated that his pay was “an insult” but that he accepted it with a larger ambition in mind.
“People never gave me a chance for anything,” he said. “They forgot that I had been fighting all my life — in the street, because I loved it, and in prison just to survive, to get respect.”
Against the heavily-favored Saad Muhammad, Qawi won on a technical knockout in the 10th round and established himself as a champion.
“I don’t enjoy beating up people,” he
said, “but I will do what I have to do.”
Dwight Edwin Braxton was born on Jan. 5, 1953, in Baltimore and grew up in Camden. His father, Charles Braxton, was a lumberjack and a forklift operator. His mother, Alice (Holmes) Braxton, ran the household for 13 children.
Relatively short for a boxer (5 feet, 6 1/2 inches) but powerful, he became known in the boxing world as the “Camden Buzzsaw.” He reminded some experts of Joe Frazier with his brawling style, nearly always charging ahead.
He had considered trade school after prison, but a friend who had seen him fight on the streets thought he could become a boxing champion. After leaving prison, he trained in Frazier’s gym in Philadelphia.
“He was like a fire hydrant, short, stubby, hard as steel,” Henry Hascup, president and historian of the New Jersey Boxing Hall of Fame, said in an interview. “He was a bull. Evander Holyfield once said that was his toughest opponent.”
After defending his WBC light heavyweight title three times, Qawi lost a unanimous decision to Michael Spinks in 1983, saying that a broken nose and a deviated septum had left him hesitant in the ring.
In 1985, Qawi won the World Boxing Association cruiserweight title, knocking out Piet Crous of South Africa in the 11th round. That victory set up a 1986 fight against the rising Holyfield, a 1984 Olympic bronze medalist who was nearly 6 inches taller and almost 10 years younger than Qawi. In what Ring Magazine called the best cruiserweight bout of the decade, Holyfield won by a split decision.
Holyfield won more decisively by a fourth-round knockout in a 1987 rematch.
Qawi told The Courier Post of Camden in 2003 that he had begun drinking at the time, at first to celebrate victory and later to dull the pain of defeat. He moved up to the heavyweight class in 1988 but was stopped in the seventh round by George Foreman.
By then, Qawi told

The Courier Post, he was buying a fifth of whiskey a day. He entered an alcohol rehabilitation program in 1990, and after retiring in 1998 with a record of 41-111, including 25 knockouts, he became a drug and alcohol counselor at the Lighthouse, a recovery center in May’s Landing, New Jersey. Later, he worked as a counselor in Baltimore.
Qawi was inducted into the New Jersey Boxing Hall of Fame in 1997 and the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2004.
Along with King, he is survived by two brothers, Thomas King and David Braxton; two sons, Dwight Ibn Qawi and Thomas Walls; and two grandsons.
“After he paid his debt to society, he became a great role model; through boxing he made something of himself,” said Hazzard, the former referee and now the commissioner of the New Jersey State Athletic Control Board. “I tip my hat to him.”
