Tropical Storm Erin continued moving westward Thursday, gradually intensifying over the southwestern Atlantic. By Friday, the storm is expected to become the Atlantic’s first hurricane this year and to pass north of the Caribbean Islands this weekend. But the models forecasters use to predict where a storm goes are starting to suggest it may curve away from the East Coast of the United States early next week.
Here’s what you need to know:
— Forecasters remain cautious that the storm’s trajectory could still change and have warned people to continue watching updates closely over the next few days.
— No warning or watches have been issued, but swells, which can produce dangerous rip currents, are expected to affect Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands by the weekend.
At 4 p.m. Thursday, the Coast Guard Captain of the
Port-San Juan directed the setting of Port Condition X-RAY for all seaports in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgins Islands due to the tropical storm.
“The Coast Guard strongly cautions the maritime community to remain vigilant and take the necessary precautions as Tropical Storm Erin approaches the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico on a west-northwest track across the Central Atlantic,” the Coast Guard said in a news release. “Ports and maritime facilities are currently open to all commercial traffic and all transfer and cargo operations may continue while Port Condition X-RAY remains in effect.”
— Even if Erin curves away from the United States, the threat of dangerous rip currents is increasing for the Atlantic coast.
— Forecasters at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said they expect it to be an above-average season, with up to 18 total named storms by the time it ends in November. A typical season has 14 named storms.

Sen. Ada Álvarez Conde announced on Thursday that she met with Financial Oversight and Management Board Executive Director Roberto Mujica Jr. to discuss salary increases for workers in education, health and public safety.
During Wednesday’s meeting, the senator reviewed a letter she sent to Mujica three months ago in which she warned that Puerto Rico is likely to face a continued exodus of workers unless a budget plan is established to ensure fair wages in the aforementioned essential sectors.
The meeting occurred at a critical time, as the oversight board currently has only one member following President Trump’s decision this week to dismiss Andrew Biggs after previously dismissing five other members, including the board’s chairman. Álvarez Conde stressed that investing in human capital is vital for families to thrive in Puerto Rico. She discussed issues such as improving retirement systems and the circumstances facing professional services workers, asserting, “We cannot continue wasting money while punishing those who sustain the country’s essential services.”
The senator has introduced initiatives aimed at increasing salaries for both teaching and non-teaching staff. She
has also advocated for measures to retain physicians and ensure fair compensation and working conditions for healthcare workers. Additionally, as the minority Popular Democratic Party spokesperson on the Senate Security Committee, she has listened to the concerns regarding firefighters’ retirement and the salaries of correctional officers. Her first resolution aimed to spur the implementation of the approved retirement plan for police officers.
Álvarez Conde also stated her commitment to closely monitoring the actions taken by both the president of the United States and the government of Puerto Rico concerning budget management.
“The composition of the Board may change, but our priorities remain the same: continuity, transparency, and respect for our people,” she emphasized.
The first-term senator concluded by saying, “I have always said that Ada Álvarez Conde is a solution in search of problems; we have many, and we need to work on them.”
“Although I am a minority senator, I am one of 28 senators, and we all have value, we all count, and we all vote,” she added.
The senator expressed her appreciation for the openness to dialogue during the meeting and highlighted Mujica’s acknowledgment that “good ideas do not have a monopoly.”

The island Justice Department expressed its unwavering commitment on Thursday to ensuring that all those accountable for the tragic slaying of 16-year-old Gabriela Nicole Pratts Rosario are brought to justice.
“We have received confirmation that the Puerto Rico Police have transferred all relevant evidence to the Prosecutor’s Office,” Justice Secretary Lourdes Gómez Torres said. “This heartbreaking incident unfolded early last Monday in Aibonito.”
The teenager tragically lost her life early Monday morning after being stabbed eight times during an altercation that occurred after she attended an end-of-the-summer event on the Roberto Colón detour, at the intersection with Highway PR-14, in Aibonito.
There are six suspects in the case, including minors.
“I want to speak directly to Gabriela’s family, friends, and the people of Puerto Rico: we are dedicating every effort to ensuring that those responsible for this heinous act are prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” Gómez Torres said. “Every action carries consequences, and it is imperative that everyone involved is held accountable.”
The case is in the hands of prosecutor Brenda Lee Soto Santiago, in whom the justice secretary expressed her full support.
“Within the realm of law, especially in criminal cases, it
is crucial to act responsibly and present robust cases with evidence that meets the highest standards,” Gómez Torres emphasized. “Our police and Prosecutor’s Office have been tirelessly working since the outset to solve this case and deliver justice. I am confident that we will succeed.”
The island’s top attorney also affirmed her ongoing communication with Institute of Forensic Sciences Director María Conte Miller, highlighting their collaborative efforts to address every aspect of the case with the urgency it deserves.
Meanwhile, Family Secretary Suzanne Roig Fuertes stated Thursday that the agency has not taken custody of any minors related to the death of Pratts Rosario, contrary to media reports.
”However, from the outset, we have activated the corresponding protocols to investigate and handle the case with the diligence and sensitivity that these situations warrant,” Roig Fuertes said in a written statement.
The official specified that the current intervention consists of a protective action plan with two families linked to the case. The plan contemplates investigating and providing support “in various ways” without implying a transfer of custody, she said.
“Both families agreed to accept this assistance and are collaborating to ensure everyone’s well-being, given the current situation,” Roig Fuertes stated.
“This protective action plan does not mean assuming custody of any minor,” she added.

Puerto Rican Independence Party (PIP by its acronym in Spanish) Rep. Nelie Lebrón Robles says that while the PIP won a record 31% of the gubernatorial vote in last year’s elections, judging by the talk in the street, many more would have voted for the pro-independence party.
“The sensation in the street is that the people say they would like to have voted for the PIP, because the reality is that the majority of Puerto Ricans feel represented by the PIP: the middle class, the school teachers, the poor, ex-teachers,” Lebrón Robles said. “I can tell you as a teacher myself, my sector feels represented by the PIP.”
Still, the unprecedented vote for the PIP, with a total of five candidates elected to the two chambers of the Legislative Assembly, was a surprise for Lebrón Robles, she said, though she added that the PIP always runs to win. Since the elections the party has not stopped working.
Should the PIP win in 2028, Lebrón Robles said, the island’s status would be decided by the people in a constitutional assembly made up of representatives of the island’s political parties.
“It won’t be like the status plebiscites, which are manipulated and end up representing just one party,” she said. “Ultimately it is Congress that is going to decide.”
“The work is for the people to understand that independence is the best formula for the country [Puerto Rico],” Lebrón Robles added.
The next challenge is to fix broken electrical infrastructure using reusable sources of energy such as batteries and solar, although that will be a challenge, she acknowledged, given that President Donald Trump is not a fan of renewable energy. Moreover, he has removed six members of the Financial Oversight and Management Board, and is expected to fill those vacancies with handpicked members based on loyalty to his policy agenda.
Trump could work in the independentistas’ favor, meanwhile, given that he has made known his antipathy toward Puerto Rico, offering to swap Puerto Rico for Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark.
Should he decide to offload Puerto Rico, Lebrón Robles noted, the president would have his “rubber stamp Congress” to give him the votes to make Puerto Rico independent.
In the meantime, the PIP lawmaker is working on the creation of a four-year plan to educate the people so that it is their plan.
The plan would use the island’s own re-
sources, Lebrón Robles said, noting that the funds the island gets from Washington are monies that come from Puerto Rico.
“FEMA [the Federal Emergency Management Agency] isn’’t a gift. We would have our own FEMA,” she said. “The funds that come from the island are sufficient.”
The plan would be one that stressed the rights of women, the rights of children and
the rights of workers. Lebrón Robles said it would be similar to the policies once seen in Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo’s Nicaragua, with which the PIP had an alliance before the events of Aug. 5, 2018, when a peaceful protest over social security turned into a bloodbath when the ruling couple’s troops turned their guns on the crowd, killing hundreds.

Following the announcement on Wednesday that President Donald Trump has dismissed Andrew G. Biggs from his position on the Financial Oversight and Management Board, attorney Rolando Emmanuelli, an acknowledged expert on the Puerto Rico Oversight, Management and Economic Stability Act (PROMESA), asserted that the board is now lacking the necessary quorum to make critical decisions.
Emmanuelli emphasized that the oversight board is currently operating at a minimal capacity with only one member, John Nixon, remaining, along with the entity’s executive director, Robert Mujica Jr. Established under the PROMESA in 2016, the board was designed to assist the U.S. territory in managing its bankruptcy and addressing fiscal challenges.
“In reality, they are functioning at the most fundamental level, handling only dayto-day operations,” Emmanuelli said during a radio interview. “However, the PROMESA Act mandates a quorum for significant decisions. For instance, to approve a budget, a majority of board members is required — something that is impossible with only one member left. They need a majority to either approve or amend a

fiscal plan or budget. Additionally, they lack the authority to nullify any government laws or contracts. This presents a precarious situation, especially given the ongoing contract negotia-
tions with New Fortress [Energy, for liquefied natural gas supply)].”
While the oversight board has successfully settled a substantial portion of the island’s $70 billion debt, the dismissal of six out of seven members comes at a critical time, as the board continues to navigate the complex bankruptcy of the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority, which seeks to restructure over $9 billion in debt.
Late on Wednesday, the oversight board confirmed Biggs’ termination, following the White House’s decision to fire five members eight days earlier. On Aug. 5, Trump removed the board’s chairman, Arthur González, along with Cameron McKenzie, Betty Rosa, Juan Sabater and Luis Ubiñas.
“The Oversight Board has been informed by the White House that the administration of President Donald J. Trump has terminated Andrew G. Biggs from his position as a member of the Oversight Board,” the board stated. “The Oversight Board will continue its daily operations and will collaborate with the administration of Governor Jenniffer González Colón and the Legislative Assembly of Puerto Rico on priorities related to fiscal responsibility as mandated by PROMESA.”

After evaluating the profiles of more than 100 executives and interviewing more than 20 candidates from Puerto Rico and beyond, the Discover Puerto Rico board of directors has announced the selection of Jorge L. Pérez as the new chief executive officer (CEO) of the organization.
Discover Puerto Rico is a private, nonprofit destination marketing organization (DMO) dedicated to promoting Puerto Rico as a premier tourist destination.
Pérez, who will start his new role on Sept. 15, is a distinguished executive with more than 20 years of experience in economic development, administration, and the destination, events, and entertainment management industries. He is recognized for his transformative leadership and has played a key role in evolving Puerto Rico’s tourism and economic ecosystem, positioning the island as a world-class destination for conventions, entertainment, and high-impact events.
Pérez has spent the past 15 years with Legends/ASM Global, a company that operates many of the world’s leading venues. He currently holds the position of regional general manager, overseeing the Puerto Rico Convention Center, the Puerto Rico Coliseum, the Coca-Cola Music Hall, and the Antiguo Casino. He also holds the prestigious Certified Venue Executive (CVE) certification from the International Association of Venue Managers (IAVM).
Notably, in 2022, he was recognized with the “All Star” distinction by VenuesNow magazine for his outstanding leadership during a period of significant expansion and growth in the Convention District’s facilities. Under his vision and leadership, the Puerto Rico Coliseum, Coca-Cola Music Hall and Convention Center have received multiple accolades and are recognized among the top venues worldwide in ticket sales and events, according to Billboard and Pollstar.
“Jorge’s professional experience is extensive and impeccable,” stated Raúl Bustamante, chairman of the board of directors of
Puerto Rico. “I am confident that as the leader of this organization, he will stimulate travel demand to our destination and continue the tourism boom we have experienced this decade.”
The transition process will last three months, during which Pérez will provide external strategic oversight in addition to his responsibilities. That role involves collaboration between the DMO and the management of group and convention properties to ensure alignment with the destination’s promotional strategies, and so that the facilities sold by Discover Puerto Rico are maintained to generate maximum economic impact.
“I embrace this challenge with great enthusiasm, recognizing the DMO’s critical role in developing the visitor economy and tackling the current challenges in the industry,” Pérez said. “Over the past four years, I have witnessed a renaissance in tourism, and Puerto Rico is uniquely positioned to establish itself as a world-class destination. I am confident that by collaborating with the DMO’s team, the government, and the
Francisco Domenech Fernández, who also serves as executive director of the Puerto Rico Fiscal Agency and Financial Advisory Authority, insisted late Wednesday that despite the dismissal of yet another of its members, the oversight board can still operate for pending processes.
“Last week, I had a meeting with the executive director of the Fiscal Control Board [sic], Mr. Robert Mujica, and we discussed the procedures that could continue with the number of members, whether there were two or one, according to the regulations of the board and staff,” Domenech said in an interview on Notiséis. “Almost all processes, particularly the most important ones such as contract approval and the transfer of funds, will continue […]. There will be no problems with that.”
He noted that both Gov. Jenniffer González Colón and Gabriella Boffelli, the executive director of the Puerto Rico Federal Affairs Administration, “are in ongoing discussions with the White House regarding the names of this shortlist of candidates to fill the board seats.”
“The governor is advocating for a Puerto Rican to be selected and is exchanging information with the White House about that shortlist,” Domenech said.

private sector, we can achieve our goals.” Bustamante emphasized that the new CEO possesses all the qualities the board was seeking for the position, including extensive experience in the tourism industry, in-depth knowledge of Puerto Rico, and the ability to align the objectives of the public and private sectors.

letter said, “replacing divisive or ideologically driven language with unifying, historically accurate and constructive descriptions.”
The review, which will begin with eight of the Smithsonian’s 21 museums, is the latest attempt by President Donald Trump to try to impose his will on the Smithsonian, which has traditionally operated as an independent institution that regards itself outside the purview of the executive branch.
Kim Sajet, the head of the National Portrait Gallery, resigned in June after Trump said he was firing her for being partisan. The Smithsonian’s governing board said at the time that it had sole responsibility for personnel decisions.
In its letter, the White House says its review “aims to ensure alignment with the president’s directive to celebrate American exceptionalism, remove divisive or partisan narratives and restore confidence in our shared cultural institutions.” It adds that the “goal is not to interfere with the day-to-day operations of curators or staff, but rather to support a broader vision of excellence that highlights historically accurate, uplifting and inclusive portrayals of America’s heritage.”
News of the letter was earlier reported by The Wall Street Journal. It is signed by Lindsey Halligan, a special assistant to the president; Vince Haley, the director of the Domestic Policy Council; and Russell Vought, the director of the Office of Management and Budget.
In a statement, the Smithsonian said that its “work is grounded in a deep commitment to scholarly excellence, rigorous research and the accurate, factual presentation of history.”
“We are reviewing the letter with this commitment in mind,” it continued, “and will continue to collaborate constructively with the White House, Congress and our governing Board of Regents.”
Bunch did not immediately return a call seeking comment.
Some historians expressed concern at the political interference in an institution that was long viewed as independent. Annette Gordon-Reed, a professor at Harvard University and president of the Organization of American Historians, said the Smithsonian was already doing a “fantastic job of presenting American history.”
“People are voting with their feet,” she said. “It’s a very popular place. The content of exhibits shouldn’t simply reflect any one administration’s preferences. They are the product of a lot of hard work by dedicated and honorable

people who want to present the most accurate picture of American history as possible. That includes the triumphs and the tragedies.”
Samuel J. Redman, a history professor at the University of Massachusetts Amherst who has written extensively about the Smithsonian, called the administration’s review “a full assault on the autonomy of all the different branches of the institution.”
Trump’s focus on the Smithsonian began in March, when he issued an executive order titled “Restoring Truth and Sanity to American History.” In it, he claimed that the Smithsonian had “come under the influence of a divisive, race-centered ideology” and that it promoted “narratives that portray American and Western values as inherently harmful and oppressive.”
Last month, bills were introduced in the House and Senate that would codify the executive order into law.
Initially, the White House’s review will focus on eight Smithsonian museums: the National Museum of American History, the National Museum of Natural History, the National Museum of African American History and Culture, the National Museum of the American Indian, the National Air and Space Museum, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the National Portrait Gallery and the Hirshhorn
Museum and Sculpture Garden. Other museums would be reviewed in a later phase, it said.
Trump does not directly control the Smithsonian, which is overseen by a Board of Regents that includes Democrats and Republicans and is overseen by Congress. But the Smithsonian is facing pressure to give ground, particularly since 62% of its more than $1 billion annual budget comes from congressional appropriation, federal grants and government contracts.
The Smithsonian closed its diversity office shortly after the president signed an executive order banning diversity, equity and inclusion programs at organizations receiving federal money. Last month, artist Amy Sherald pulled her upcoming show from the National Portrait Gallery, saying that the museum was concerned about her painting that depicts a transgender Statue of Liberty.
An earlier confrontation with the administration was avoided when the Smithsonian issued a statement that embraced its independent authority but acknowledged the institution’s need to be nonpartisan in its depiction of American history and life. Some in the Smithsonian leadership thought the measures might curb the White House, but they appear to have misjudged its commitment to addressing what it views as deficiencies.

President Donald Trump promised an “overwhelming presence” of federal agents and military troops on the streets of Washington when announcing a crime crackdown earlier this week.
Four days in, however, National Guard soldiers have mostly been seen massing in parking lots and taking photos with tourists. Federal agents have made a larger show of force, mainly through traffic checkpoints and immigration-related arrests.
National Guard soldiers were seen Thursday morning at Union Station, the transit
hub near the Capitol, where the sight of armed security is not uncommon. But the impression of a major military presence across the city has yet to materialize.
Officials have telegraphed a larger surge over the next few days, saying that 100 to 200 soldiers might be on the streets at any given time to support police officers. The troops cannot make arrests themselves.
The situation resembled Trump’s deployment of some 4,000 California National Guard soldiers and 700 Marines to Los Angeles in June during protests against the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown.

Florida will soon open a second staterun immigration detention center in an empty prison west of Jacksonville, Gov. Ron DeSantis announced Thursday, growing the state’s contentious effort to crack down on illegal immigration.
The new detention center will be named the “Deportation Depot,” DeSantis said, again trying to brand a facility that will house federal immigration detainees for maximum political effect. His administration named its first staterun detention center “Alligator Alcatraz,” based on its location in the Florida Everglades. The Republican Party of Florida promptly began selling merchandise featuring that name.
Unlike the Everglades facility, which was built in June on a remote airfield with little to no infrastructure, the new detention center will operate out of the Baker Correctional Institution in rural Sanderson. The Florida Department of Corrections closed that facility, which can house about 1,300 detainees, in 2021 as it consolidated several North Florida prisons.
Kevin Guthrie, executive director of the Florida Division of Emergency Management, said temporary dorms could increase the new center’s capacity to about 2,000. The Division of Emergency Management operates the Everglades detention center, which state officials hope will be able to accommodate 4,000 detainees by the end of August.
DeSantis has continued his push to help the Trump administration enforce immigration laws despite legal challenges to the Everglades center, reports of poor conditions for its detainees, questions over the state’s authority to hold
town Los Angeles during protests and provided some backup on immigration raids. But others spent much of their deployment in a sprawling tent city, where they were based, or sitting in trucks with little to do, eroding morale.
In Washington on Wednesday night, the most visible sign of Trump’s takeover of the local Police Department was a sobriety checkpoint operated by local and federal police agencies on a busy street near downtown, which drew a crowd of jeering protesters.
Officers from other federal law enforcement agencies, including the FBI and U.S. Border Patrol, also assisted in traffic stops and other police operations overnight, sometimes rolling through intersections in large unmarked vehicles.
Institute for Peace in Washington, on Thursday, Aug. 14, 2025. federal detainees in the first place and criticism from some fellow Republicans over how much the center has cost.
Without addressing any of those concerns, DeSantis said Thursday that opening the second detention center would cost about $6 million. That is a fraction of the at least $450 million that Florida has said it would cost to operate the Everglades detention center for a year.
The federal government will reimburse the state for all of its detention center spending, the governor said.
DeSantis had said since the opening of the Everglades detention center that his administration was considering a second facility in North Florida if there was “demand” for more space to hold federal immigration detainees. That time has come, he said Thursday, without offering data.
“This will really, I think, meet a need that is there,” he said, standing outside the Baker Correctional Institution. Florida, he added, has “done more on this than any other state by a country mile.”
The governor had initially suggested Camp Blanding, a training site for the Florida National Guard outside of Starke, between Jacksonville and Gainesville, as the likely location for the detention center. But unlike the Everglades detention center, Camp Blanding’s runway could not accommodate aircraft large enough to transport many detainees at once, DeSantis said Thursday. The Baker Correctional Institution is near an airport in Lake City.
Last week, a federal judge in Miami ordered a 14-day stop to construction at the Everglades detention center, pending the completion of a hearing in a case brought by environmentalists.
The FBI director, Kash Patel, said that the bureau and “our partners” — a potentially long list of both federal and local agencies — had made 45 arrests overnight, 29 of which were related to immigration matters.

Perhaps the highest-profile arrest during the federal crackdown involved a man charged with assaulting a federal officer earlier in the week by throwing a sandwich at him.
The man tried to turn himself in Wednesday night to face the assault charge, his lawyer said, but was arrested instead.

In 2022, the U.S. Senate unanimously passed a resolution condemning President Vladimir Putin of Russia as a war criminal. Yet President Donald Trump this week appears poised to reward Putin for his invasion of Ukraine and the slaughter and rape of Ukrainian civilians and the trafficking of Ukrainian children that followed.
We all get a bit dizzy watching Trump’s pirouettes on the war in Ukraine: Just recently, he was denouncing Russia for its “disgusting” attacks on Ukraine, declaring that “we’re going to put sanctions” on Russia. He seemed to understand that Putin was the obstacle to ending the war. “He wants to obviously, probably, keep the war going,” Trump had told reporters a couple of days earlier. And he had set last Friday as his deadline for Putin to agree to a ceasefire.
Then as the deadline arrived, Trump caved. Instead of imposing tough sanctions, he announced a summit meeting with Putin and suggested that Ukraine would have to give up territory to reach a deal.
A summit with Putin isn’t necessarily a bad idea, and Trump’s genuine involvement in ending the war would be welcome. It’s likewise fair for Trump to press each side to compromise, and many Ukrainians seem ready to make concessions: More than two-thirds said in a Gallup poll that they favor a speedy negotiated end to the war, rather than fighting on until victory. (Another poll shows, however, reluctance to give up territory.)
But the way the Trump/Putin summit scheduled for Friday is coming together is raising alarms worldwide because it may be setting the stage not for an actual settlement but for craven capitulation.
It’s particularly offensive that Trump and Putin will presumably discuss how to carve Ukraine up without its president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, even invited to the discussion. As the saying goes, those who aren’t at the table are on the menu.
Trump is talking about “swapping” land, which seems to mean that Ukraine would be called upon to surrender territory to Russia, glossing over the issue of the security
guarantees Ukraine needs. This would constitute a capitulation to an invader, a reward for aggression and a dangerous message to China that seizing territory will pay off.
“I make deals,” Trump boasted at a Monday news conference, but history does not always celebrate deals for the sake of deals.
“If Trump wants to hand Alaska or parts of it back” to Russia, “I guess he can do that,” posted Carl Bildt, the former Swedish prime minister. “But he has no right whatsoever to trade away the territory of any other nation. None.”
The Trump administration sometimes eerily reflects Kremlin talking points, which may be because Trump has a fundamental misunderstanding of the dynamic: He clearly believes we have done favors for Ukraine, when in fact it is Ukraine that at huge cost is advancing American interests as well as values.
Since 2022, the State Department reported in March, we have provided about $67 billion in military assistance to Ukraine (compared to a military budget that now reaches $1 trillion annually). That modest share has helped devastate Russia’s army and helped protect our NATO allies, while also giving us invaluable insights into drone warfare.
Moreover, one of the nightmare scenarios in the coming years would be a war pitting us against China. Today, we try to deter China’s aggression with aircraft carriers and bases in the Pacific, but my guess is that what deters its president, Xi Jinping, even more is the sight of Russia being pummeled militarily and economically since it invaded Ukraine.
The more Russia suffers, the less likely China is to move on Taiwan. Conversely, if Trump rewards Russia by lifting sanctions and allowing Moscow to swallow lands it invaded, that will be more reason for Xi to conclude that it may be worth it to take a bite out of Taiwan — and there will be greater risk of another world war.
My Armenian and Polish paternal grandparents were married in Lviv, in what is now western Ukraine, in February 1914, in an optimistic age. But bungled policies led within months to World War I and eventually to World War II; my grandparents’ and their children’s entire worlds were overturned, and that’s why I’m a refugee’s son in America. Those are the stakes: If we don’t get our foreign policy right here, there’s a risk of another round of cataclysm.
Ukrainians understand this, which is why they have been heroic in a way that should inspire us. I think of Alla Kuznietsova, whom I met in 2022 in Izium, Ukraine, her hometown. Izium was occupied, and she spied on Russian troops and was arrested. She described how Russian forces stripped her naked, beat her with cables and raped her. She could hear her husband’s screams as he was flogged nearby.
But Kuznietsova ran the local gas company, and without

her the pipes stopped working. So the Russians grumpily agreed to free her to get the gas flowing again, and then she refused to leave her cell unless her husband was freed as well — together they escaped Russian-controlled areas and made their way to free Ukraine.
This extraordinary woman left me with a plea that I hope Trump will contemplate during his meeting with Putin.
“We are grateful to Americans,” she said. “But we just ask, please don’t leave us halfway. Don’t leave us alone.”

The five Kennedy Center honorees announced by President Donald Trump on Wednesday hail from a typically broad spectrum of the arts: popular musical genres, the Broadway stage and blockbuster Hollywood films.
Trump’s list of recipients included country music artist George Strait, disco queen Gloria Gaynor and rock band Kiss as his musical honorees. He rounded out his list with two actors: Michael Crawford, an Englishman decorated for his stage performances in musicals including “Phantom of the Opera,” and Sylvester Stallone, the American action actor best known for portraying the boxer Rocky Balboa in a series of eponymous films and the mercenary warrior John Rambo in another box-office franchise.
Trump’s announcement, which he made from the Kennedy Center, is his first since he purged the renowned concert venue of its board members appointed by former President Joe Biden, fired the center’s president and made himself chair.
It revealed his growing influence over the center and its programs as well as his veto power over the list of honorees. He had personally approved each of the recipients, he said, and rejected several other suggested artists because they were “wokesters.”
But while some of this year’s recipients have expressed support for Trump, the list doesn’t read like a blatantly political roster.
George Strait, country king
Strait, who was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2006, is credited with helping to bring country music back to a more traditional sound, at a time when the genre was gravitating toward pop influence. Strait, a Texan, looks as well as sounds the part of a country music legend, having preferred a signature urban cowboy style since his first breakout hits in the 1980s. In the decades since, he has enjoyed remarkable success, racking up 60 No. 1 hit songs on the country charts — the most of any artist in any genre.
Gloria Gaynor, disco queen Gaynor, who was inducted into the Dance Hall of Fame in 2005, is one of the most recognizable voices of the disco movement that peaked in the United States during the 1970s. Her popularity, however, has far outlasted that era, thanks to the lasting commercial success of her biggest hit, “I Will Survive” — which also seems to be a personal favorite of Trump’s.
“Unbelievable song,” Trump quipped during his announcement, adding that “it’s one of those few that get better every time you hear it.” The song is so recognizable and popular that it has occasionally been repurposed as an antiTrump anthem, including in 2017, when celebrities recorded themselves singing it in anticipation of Trump’s first inauguration.
Kiss, hard rock and heavy makeup
Kiss, known beyond its fan base for its members’ face

paint, elaborate costumes and stage performances that feature theatrics and pyrotechnics, has had its style alternatively described as hard rock, heavy metal, glam rock and glam metal. Regardless of classification, the group, which formed in the 1970s, had a huge influence on bands that followed, helping to popularize grandiose live performances. Kiss, which continues to enjoy significant commercial success and
crossover appeal, was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2014.
Michael Crawford, the original Phantom
Crawford might not be a household name in the United States, but the decorated British stage actor has originated and popularized a series of iconic roles in musical theater. He was the original Phantom in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Phantom of the Opera” when it premiered in London, and won a Tony Award for the role after it moved to Broadway. Long before that, he sang the role of Cornelius Hackl in the 1969 film version of “Hello, Dolly!” starring Barbra Streisand.
“I think he’s one of the greatest talents I’ve ever actually seen,” Trump said of Crawford on Wednesday.
Sylvester Stallone, action hero
For many moviegoers, Stallone’s visage is synonymous with title roles he popularized in two franchises that produced multiple films and more than $1 billion in revenue: Rocky, about a hapless Philadelphia boxer who becomes the heavyweight champion, and Rambo, about an Army special forces veteran of the Vietnam War who fights bad guys, including corrupt cops.
In addition to his film credentials, Stallone is a stalwart supporter of Trump, whom he called “the second George Washington” shortly after his election in November. Trump has also designated Stallone one of three “special ambassadors” to Hollywood, tasked with bringing film production that has been taking place overseas to the United States. Nearly three decades into show business and 35 Grammys later, Beyoncé has won her first Emmy. The win brings her one step closer to EGOT status.
Beyoncé won a Primetime Emmy Award for outstanding costumes for variety, nonfiction or reality programming alongside five collaborators for “Beyoncé Bowl,” her NFL halftime performance that streamed live on Netflix on Christmas Day during a game between the Houston Texans and the Baltimore Ravens.
The award was one of several announced Tuesday by the Television Academy in juried categories that recognized creative achievement in animation, costume, emerging media programming and motion design.
For juried categories, entrants are screened and evaluated by a panel of professionals with the possibility of one, more than one or no one winning an award. “As a result, there are no nominees but instead a one-step evaluation and voting procedure,” a news release from the Television Academy said. The honors will be presented next
month at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards ceremony in Los Angeles.
Beyoncé’s 13-minute western-themed performance — which took place in Houston, her hometown — showcased songs from her latest album, “Cowboy Carter,” including “16 Carriages,” “Blackbird” and “Ya Ya,” and was a precursor to her world tour.
Her performance, which was part of Netflix’s first foray into live professional football streaming, drew an audience of 27 million, according to Nielsen. It also led to the hashtag #BeyonceBowl outranking #Christmas on X, according to Netflix.
For her work on “Beyoncé Bowl,” the pop superstar is also nominated for two additional Primetime Emmys for outstanding directing for a variety special and for outstanding variety special.
Before this win, Beyoncé had received several other Emmy nominations: four for her 2019 “Homecoming” film; two for her 2016 “Lemonade” HBO special; one for her “On the Run” HBO special with her husband, Jay-Z, in 2014; and one for her Super Bowl halftime show from 2013.

Wall Street’s main indexes were mixed on Thursday with S&P 500 edging up to a closing high, while the Dow Jones and Nasdaq were flat, after a hotter-thanexpected producer prices report dampened expectations of potential interest-rate cuts.
A Labor Department report showed producer prices increased the most in three years in July due to a surge in the costs of goods and services, suggesting a broad pickup in inflation was imminent.

A separate report on Thursday showed the number of Americans filing new applications for jobless benefits fell last week.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed 11.01 points, or 0.02%, down to 44,911.26, the S&P 500 gained 1.96 points, or 0.03%, to 6,468.54 - a new closing high - and the Nasdaq Composite lost 2.47 points, or 0.01%, to 21,710.67.
On Thursday, seven of the 11 S&P 500 sectors declined.
Recent data reflecting labor market weakness and a moderate rise in consumer prices had strengthened expectations that the central bank will potentially lower interest rates next month.

However, Thursday’s report fanned concerns that U.S. tariffs on imports could start to impact prices in the coming months and dampen a rally in U.S. stocks that had helped the benchmark S&P 500 and tech-heavy Nasdaq log record highs over the past two sessions.

But they are still fully pricing in a quarter-percentage-point cut in September.
“The implication is that the Fed is going to offer a 25-(basis point) cut in September. But it will be a hawkish cut. It’s way too early still for the Fed to wish to guide the market towards an extended easing cycle,” said Thierry Wizman, global FX and rates strategist at Macquarie Group.
“The next important thing will be the Expenditures Price Index later this month. If there are signals that there’s inflation broadly in services, the market will take that adversely.”
The hotter-than-expected PPI report now has investors pulling petals from a daisy saying “They (the Fed) will cut rates, they won’t cut rates,” he added.
St. Louis Fed President Alberto Musalem, a voting member on the Federal Open Market Committee this year, said a half-point rate cut at the Fed’s September meeting is not warranted, a day after Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said it was possible.
Intel Corp rose 7.4% as Bloomberg News reported the Trump administration is in talks with Intel to have the U.S. government potentially take a stake in the chipmaker, the news organization reported on Thursday, citing people familiar with the plan.

There is nobody with more confidence in President Donald Trump’s dealmaking abilities than Trump himself.
Yet, as his Friday meeting in Alaska with President Vladimir Putin of Russia draws near, he and his top aides are lowering expectations, suggesting it’s not Trump’s job to make peace between Moscow and Ukraine and calling the summit little more than a “listening exercise.”
Statements like that belie the enormous stakes of the first meeting between Trump and Putin since the Russian invasion, particularly for the parties who aren’t expected to be present, which includes the leadership of Ukraine and of the European nations that have been living with the war on their doorstep. For Trump, though, the motivation is personal — it’s a chance to reset a relationship he has long boasted about but has lately become rocky, while bringing his personal brand of dealmaking to the world’s biggest stage.
There’s a lot going on here. So I called David Sanger of The New York Times, who has covered the White House and national security for decades and who has written books about superpower conflict, before he boarded a series of flights to Anchorage.
He walked me through the calculus of risk and reward around this meeting — and why Putin can claim a modest win before it even starts. (Our conversation was condensed and edited for clarity.)
Q: As you’ve written, it used to be normal for an American president to meet with the Russian leader. George W. Bush met with Putin roughly two dozen times. Joe Biden met him only once, in 2021. But Trump’s meeting will be the first for an American president since the Western world isolated Russia following the invasion of Ukraine. What does he stand to gain from it?
A: Trump sees himself as a peacemaker, and this is tied up very much in his oft-expressed desire to win the Nobel Peace Prize, which he usually combines with some kind of comment to suggest that the Nobel committee would never give it to him.
He has taken credit for a ceasefire between India and Pakistan, although the Indians have a different version of that story. He took a direct role in a peace pledge signed between Armenia and Azerbaijan, at the White House, and
there have been other regional conflicts in which he’s played an important role. The big ones, though, have evaded him.
Those, of course, are the Israel-Hamas war and the Russian war with Ukraine, which he famously declared that he would solve in 24 hours, on the basis of his long and, in his view, respectful relationship with Putin. He has now come to question whether that relationship is what he thought it was, or at least what he portrayed it as, because Putin has held a series of perfectly friendly, constructive phone calls with him and then continued on the same battle plan that he was on before, with considerable recent success.
If the president comes out of Alaska without an immediate or imminent ceasefire plan, I think it’s going to be difficult for him to portray this as a win. But a ceasefire alone won’t be enough.
Q: Who has the most at stake here?
A: The country with the most at stake, of course, is Ukraine and its president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who wasn’t invited. The second-most at stake is President Trump and the countries that make up the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, or NATO. Let me explain.
For Ukraine, the risk is that Trump will push for something he’s been referring to as a “land swap.” He doesn’t say that Russia would simply get the land that it has already taken militarily, which would be problematic enough, because it would reward Moscow and Putin for invading a sovereign state.
Trump’s use of the phrase “swaps” leaves you with the impression that he might be willing to award the Russians territory that they have not gained militarily, in return for something else.
Q: Tell us about the risks for Trump.
A: The big risk for Trump is that whatever comes out of Alaska is just a delaying action. Putin may calculate that what he needs most is a relaxation of sanctions, a reopening of trade and time to rebuild his force so that a few years from now, he can attempt a reinvasion of the rest of Ukraine and use the territory he’s gained as a launchpad to drive toward Kyiv. That’s a huge risk, and the Ukrainians are rightly worried about it.
To forestall that, the Europeans and Zelenskyy are insisting on security guarantees and continued arms shipments to Ukraine, as well as making sure that Trump doesn’t make any concessions about where NATO forces can be deployed in Eastern Europe. All of those issues are as important — and over the long term, perhaps more important — than where you draw the boundaries between Russia and Ukraine.
And there’s one more risk for NATO. Will Putin use this meeting to drive a wedge between Trump and the NATO allies? That is Putin’s greatest dream.
Q: The person who has the least to lose from this meeting, it seems, is Putin himself. What might he be trying to extract?
A: Putin has something of a victory just the moment that he lands in Alaska, because it’s the
President Donald Trump and President Vladimir Putin of Russia meet at the G20 Summit in Osaka, Japan, June 28, 2019. Trump is scheduled to meet Putin on Friday in Alaska, to discuss a path to ending the war that began when Russia invaded Ukraine three and a half years ago. The stakes of the meeting are enormous, particularly for the parties who aren’t expected to be present. (Erin Schaff/The New York Times)
end of his isolation by the West.
He’s most certainly thinking about ways to raise topics that will distract Trump from the war in Ukraine. He’s bringing a business delegation, and while we don’t know what they are prepared to discuss, there’s no better way to get Trump’s attention than wave a big possible investment deal, particularly for critical minerals or rare earths that would make the U.S. less dependent on China.
There’s also the possibility that Putin will offer up some kind of informal agreement to extend the last major bilateral arms control treaty between Russia and the United States, which expires early next year. That could allow Trump, who is very sensitive on nuclear issues, to walk away claiming a win.
Q: For Trump, this exercise is about him saving face over his up-and-down relationship with Putin. It’s about burnishing his credentials as a peacemaker. It’s about making himself look good. And yet it comes with great, great geopolitical risk for traditional American allies.
A: It does. And a lesson that we learned from the first Trump term is that the president tends to go into these meetings under prepared and overly confident in his ability to use the force of personality to win the day.
Let’s think of the biggest example in the first term. It was his personal diplomacy with Kim Jong Un of North Korea. But where are we now? The two leaders embraced each other and exchanged lovely letters, but never reached a nuclear agreement. North Korea has more nuclear weapons today than it ever had, by far, during Trump’s first term.
Just because you’re holding the meeting and all the cameras are there and handshakes and hugs are happening does not necessarily mean that you are changing the directional arrow of world events.
Q: Is that the best that Europe and Ukraine can hope for here? That this meeting doesn’t make anything worse for them — it just doesn’t do anything at all?
A: “First do no harm” is not only a medical phrase. It’s also true in the science of — and art of — geopolitics.

The woman took her final steps on the open desert terrain in southern Pakistan and stopped, turning her back to her executioner as he raised his gun.
“You can shoot me,” said Bano Bibi, 35, her beige shawl fluttering in the wind. “But nothing more than that.”
The man shot Bibi three times, killing her on the spot over accusations that the mother of five was having an affair. Then he turned to the man accused of being her lover, Ehsanullah Samalani, a 50-year-old father of four, and shot him dead as well.
The double execution has shocked many Pakistanis, sparked protests and drawn widespread condemnation from politicians.
It caused outrage not just because it was another so-called honor killing in Pakistan — where, on average, more than one woman is slain every day for supposedly dishonoring her family — but because the authorities took action only after a video of the shootings went viral, more than six weeks later.
“Many communities and families insist that their misplaced sense of ‘honor’ is located in a woman’s body and actions,” said Sherry Rehman, a senator who introduced a resolution calling for the prosecution of those involved in the killings of Bibi and Samalani.
Rehman said perpetrators were emboldened by the low rate of prosecutions for such killings. “That is also why control over a woman’s actions and rights find so many colluders across the board in keeping heinous customs like this alive,” she said in a written response to questions.
Politicians and law enforcement officials in this Muslim nation of more than 240 million people have long vowed to do more to protect women. They have repeatedly promised to take action against perpetrators of killings like these, which are carried out in the name of centuries-old traditions.
But Bibi’s death, her defiant last words and the impunity enjoyed for weeks by those who ordered her death have yet again cast doubt on Pakistani officials’ ability, or will, to tackle one of the country’s most persistent and egregious forms of violence.
In the video, male onlookers can be seen watching in silence, neither moving nor trying to intervene, some of them filming the execution with their smartphones.

Late last month, the police opened an investigation into the killings, which took place in early June. More than 15 people were arrested within days. Among them was Bibi’s mother, who, in a video recorded before her arrest, had said that the killing “had to be done” and “was necessary to cleanse our family’s honor.”
“It’s mostly victim blaming, where the killer will say, ‘She dishonored our family,’” said Sheema Kermani, a classical dancer and women’s rights activist who cofounded Aurat March, a leading feminist movement in Pakistan. “But there is no honor in these killings. They are dishonorable murders.”
At least 405 women were victims of socalled “honor killings” last year, according to the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan, an independent rights group.
They often take place in rural areas, where deeply entrenched patriarchal beliefs are used to justify violence against women. The killing of Bibi and Samalani was one of those, carried out on the outskirts of Quetta, a city in the southern province of Balochistan.
But such killings happen in all economic classes and across the country, including in large cities, and even among Pakistan’s diaspora. In January, a man lured his 14-yearold daughter, who was living in New York, back to Pakistan and killed her because of her lifestyle, including the clothing she wore.
There are several laws against genderbased violence in Pakistan, but killings like these often go unreported or unpunished,
as a centuries-old tribal code trumps civil law in vast swathes of the country.
In such cases, decisions made at local council meetings, known as jirgas, prevail over Pakistan’s courts. Often, relatives — a father, a brother, an uncle — will kill women for refusing a forced marriage, seeking a divorce or engaging in relationships that the men see as violating their culture’s values.
According to the Sustainable Social Development Organization, a Pakistani nonprofit, such killings led to criminal convictions in just 0.5% of all reported cases last year.
A 2016 law, meant to ensure that more perpetrators were punished, made it impossible for the victim’s family to pardon the accused in such cases, among other measures. But the killings continued and even increased in number over the past few years, said Farah Zia, director of the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan. Her organization uses data provided by the police, and she said the real toll was likely to be much higher.
“The law hasn’t come to the rescue to mitigate these crimes,” Zia said. “Incidents every now and then get traction in the media, but it continues in a shameful way.”
In recent weeks, the police arrested the
not forgotten
father and brother of an 18-year-old woman who was found dead after escaping a forced marriage in Rawalpindi, 20 miles from the capital, Islamabad. In Pakistan’s south, an 80-year-old man confessed to murdering his 23-year-old granddaughter, with the help of his son and his brother, in the name of “honor” because, he said, she had left home after refusing an arranged marriage.
In early June, Bibi and Samalani were brought before a local tribal leader in Balochistan, who declared that they had committed an act of dishonor and ordered their execution, according to a police report seen by The New York Times.
The authorities have since charged the tribal leader and 15 other people with premeditated murder. They were also charged with terrorism, on the grounds that they had tried to incite fear and panic by posting the video.
The man who is seen shooting Bibi and Samalani in the video was still at large as of Tuesday. So was Bibi’s brother, who can be seen among the people watching the execution.
Kermani, the activist, said, “That video sends a chilling message that says, ‘Don’t let any women dare decide for their own life, because that is what we will do to them.’”

ne the president on foreign policy, jeopardize his recent trade deals and damage the U.S. economy.
The letter echoed Trump in cautioning that such a loss would leave the government in “financial ruin,” and carry a “1929-style result,” a reference to the Great Depression. It added that such a disruption could see Americans “forced from their homes” while leaving Social Security and Medicare “threatened” financially.
Many budget experts raised significant objections to the Trump administration’s claims about the potential loss of tariff revenue, which has helped to generate about $152 billion in customs duties through July, according to the Treasury Department.
Economists say the U.S. government long has operated with a substantial debt, and the loss of tariff revenue would be unlikely to cause a catastrophic economic downturn. Those import taxes also do not directly affect Social Security and Medicare. Payroll taxes fund those entitlements, with Medicare receiving additional support through other sources, such as premiums.
round of arguments at the Court of International Trade, where a panel of judges determined in May that the president did not have “unbounded authority” to issue tariffs under the 1977 International Economic Emergency Powers Act, known as IEEPA.
The administration quickly appealed, and in oral arguments this month, Brett A. Shumate, an assistant attorney general, maintained that the law allowed the president “to take extraordinary action” to regulate trade, which Trump had interpreted to mean tariffs. But Shumate also told the judges that they could not second-guess Trump in his declaration of a national emergency.
At times, the judges appeared skeptical about some of the arguments, which trade experts later interpreted as a poor sign for the president. The administration has already asked the appellate court to pause any decision that might invalidate its tariffs, which would buy the government time to seek emergency relief at the Supreme Court.
By TONY ROMM
The Trump administration’s top lawyers urged a federal court this week to uphold its sweeping global tariffs or risk “financial ruin,” warning that the United States could slip into an economic depression if an adverse ruling forces the government to refund billions of dollars in duties.
While experts broadly disputed that a losing verdict would trigger a calamity of that magnitude, many said the government’s extraordinary assertions underscored the risks looming over President Donald Trump, who has widened the scope of his punishing trade war even while its legal basis remains unsettled.
At the heart of the wrangling is a 1977 law that empowers the president to impose trade embargoes and sanctions in response to economic emergencies. The word tariff appears nowhere in that statute, but Trump has nonetheless invoked its powers as the basis for his withering levies, including the steep taxes he imposed on imports from more than 90 countries Aug. 7.
For Trump, the worst-case scenario would be a resounding defeat at the hands of the Supreme Court, which is likely to take up one of the pending cases. If the
justices rule overwhelmingly against the president, the decision could halt tariff collections while triggering “a significant wave of claims” from businesses demanding refunds, said Andrew Morris, a senior litigation counsel at the New Civil Liberties Alliance. The legal group has represented businesses in tariff lawsuits.
The mechanics of that process — from how it would work, to whom would be eligible to reclaim the money — would depend on the scope of any court decision. Still, a loss could undercut one of Trump’s primary reasons for imposing tariffs in the first place, choking off a source of revenue that the president says is already making America “rich.”
The prospect has spooked Trump, who took to social media last week to warn it would be “impossible to ever recover, or pay back, these massive sums of money,” if a court ruled against him, adding that a loss could trigger a “GREAT DEPRESSION!”
Trump’s top lawyers formalized those arguments in a filing Monday with the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, which is considering a legal challenge initially brought by small businesses and states. In a letter signed by D. John Sauer, the U.S. solicitor general, the government said that a ruling against tariffs would undermi-
“Tariff money is not a game changer with a $2 trillion deficit and a $7 trillion budget,” said Jessica Riedl, a senior fellow at the Manhattan Institute, a think tank, who said the result of refunds would not be a “budgetary earthquake.”
For now, at least, the Trump administration’s plea to the courts illustrated the stakes for the president’s trade strategy, which hinges on his ability to impose or threaten tariffs on a whim, and without the need to obtain the approval of Congress.
Trump has used these rates as carrot and stick to induce favorable trade deals and punish nations that fail to acquiesce — or, in some cases, to accomplish political objectives well outside the remit of trade. A ruling against him could neuter that primary source of leverage, leaving Trump with only limited options to impose duties on his own. The White House did not respond to a request for comment.
“I think the more deals we’ve done, the more money coming in, it gets harder and harder for SCOTUS to rule against us,” said Scott Bessent, the Treasury secretary, in an appearance Tuesday on Fox Business, using an acronym to refer to the Supreme Court.
The Trump administration lost the first
In their letter Monday, lawyers for the government specifically called attention to the agreements that Trump has brokered recently with major trading partners, including those in the European Union, some of which had also committed to investing in the United States.
Sauer, the solicitor general, said a verdict against the president may result in the “forced dissolution” of those deals, which would be “ruinous” for the economy, given that foreign leaders had “committed” to pay trillions of dollars to the United States.
“There is no substitute for the tariffs and deals that President Trump has made,” he wrote along with Shumate.
The small businesses that sued the government responded Tuesday. Lawyers for those firms, including VOS Selections, a wine importer in New York, told the court that the president did indeed have other powers to achieve his trade goals — and could, for example, “submit agreements for congressional approval.”
In the meantime, the president has continued to brag about the revenue tariffs have raised.
“Trillions of Dollars are being taken in on Tariffs,” Trump said Tuesday, overstating the amount, adding it “has been incredible for our Country, its Stock Market, its General Wealth, and just about everything else.”

White House will ‘definitely’ host a UFC fight on July 4, UFC head says
By DAVID A. FAHRENTHOLD
President Donald Trump is moving ahead with plans to hold an Ultimate Fighting Championship event on the White
House grounds next July 4, the UFC’s chief executive, Dana White, told CBS earlier this week.
“It is definitely going to happen,” White said on “CBS Mornings” on Tuesday. A White
House official who asked not to be named to discuss plans that were still in their early stages confirmed that the event was expected to happen on July 4.
White is a longtime supporter of Trump’s, even introducing him at the Republican National Convention last July, and the president has attended three UFC events since his election in November.
July 4 is the date of a long-planned national celebration of the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. The nonprofit planning the celebration, America250.org, did not respond to questions about what role the fight would play in the festivities. A UFC spokesperson declined to comment about the details of the event, including how many fights would be on the bill.
Trump raised the idea of a UFC event at the White House last month, saying at a kickoff event in Iowa for the national celebration that the White House would host a “full fight” as part of the festivities.
In his interview with CBS, White said
that he spoke with Trump on Monday night and that he intended to visit Washington this month to discuss details with the president and his daughter Ivanka.
“He said, ‘I want Ivanka in the middle of this,’” White said. “So Ivanka reached out to me, and her and I started talking about the possibilities.”
