We want to acknowledge the people on whose land we live—the Atfalati-Kalapuyans also known as the Tualatin Band of Kalapuyans—the first inhabitants of Washington County. We are grateful for the land we are on, Kalapuyan land.

Today their descendants are tribal members of Grand Ronde and Siletz tribes, carrying on the traditions and cultures of their ancestors. We acknowledge and express gratitude for the ancestors of this place and recognize that we are here because of the sacrifices forced upon them. In remembering these communities, we honor their legacy, their lives, and their continuation in our community.

Welcome to the Patricia Reser Center for the Arts...The Reser. To be part of something larger than oneself, larger than one’s immediate circle, to be a part of something that will last for generations to come, is beautiful and humbling to me. That is what awaits us as we gather to celebrate artistic expression in all its forms at The Reser.

As we prepared for our marriage 63 years ago, little did I know that a promise made between me and my late husband, Al...’that we would always give back to the communities in which we lived and worked’...would manifest itself in the Patricia Reser Center for the Arts. We had no idea what that promise might mean. But our early commitment started with activities in which our family was involved, activities that included school, community sports and our church. Over time that ‘giving back’ embraced our broader community, universities, and the state of Oregon through our Family Foundation.

But why the Arts? From a young age I was personally involved with a musical instrument, choirs, musical productions and much later in life, painting. As an adult, attending local community theater and professional offerings in Portland planted a seed in my mind: I wondered if there would ever be a time when we might have a center for the arts in Beaverton. I had become aware of the early cave paintings in the Caves of Lascaux, France, and began to understand that humankind has endeavored throughout history to express ideas, emotions, and interpretations of life through art... and that there is an inherent human desire to create and to be inspired. Understanding the significance of the Arts in individual lives played an important role in helping me understand and appreciate the enriching role they were playing in my own life. At the same time, I realized there were others in our community who longed for the same opportunity. That seed took root.

I invite each of you to come to The Reser and experience the magnitude of what the Arts can provide for our community - the power to heal, enlighten, entertain, stretch. The Reser offers an opportunity for each of us to look through someone else’s eyes and get a glimpse of their struggles and, in return, reflect on those moments in our own life in which choices were made that may have influenced our trajectory.

Perhaps, just perhaps, the lyrical sculpture hanging in our glass-enclosed lobby will playfully encourage reflection on what is behind us, what is around us and what invites us to dream about the possibilities that lie ahead.

And perhaps the performances energizing our mainstage, the excitement of emerging artistry in the Lab, and the creativity of visual arts in our art gallery, will create a center of joy around which we become a community of people coming together to celebrate, to dream, and to delight in a shared moment. I believe they will.

A long-held dream has been realized. The opening of the Patricia Reser Center for the Arts is proof that you – the people of our community and region – can dream of a better future and deliver on its promise.

We are thrilled to bring you our Grand Opening Reser Presents Spring Season – a live performance series that brings the world to our stage. The Reser is proud to be located in the heart of Beaverton, a welcoming and inclusive city, and we are committed to creating a space that’s representative of the people we serve. This Spring Season of Reser Presents is the beginning of a cultural journey we can all take together. We believe that each of these award-winning artists and attractions brings a special story, voice, and artistry that you deserve to see. As a whole, they create a tapestry that illustrates The Reser’s belief that our differences are to be celebrated and we all have something to gain by discovering each other’s traditions.

As we bring The Reser to life, we stand on the shoulders of so many who came before us. The dream of building a professional arts center to provide more access to the Arts in Beaverton and Washington County was born as a grass-roots idea decades ago. It manifested in Beaverton’s award-winning Community Visioning process. First, we thank Pat Reser and the Reser Family’s extraordinary generosity and vision. And we should all thank former Mayor Denny Doyle, Mayor Lacey Beaty and current and former members of the Beaverton City Council, who boldly responded to the community’s aspirations by creating a public-private partnership to provide for both the construction and the future of The Reser. We thank the Trustees of the Beaverton Arts Foundation and the members of Beaverton Arts Commission for their support and advocacy, and for carrying the torch for more than twenty years. And, we thank over 1000 supporters including neighbors, business owners, and foundations who gave gifts from $2.00 to $1.5 million and helped exceed the construction campaign goal, even in the face of a historic pandemic. Finally, we are grateful for our friends, donors and sponsors who have invested before the ribbon was cut to make this Grand Opening Spring Season a success. We are humbled by all of your support and contributions.

The Reser belongs to you and this is the beginning of our journey together. Whether you come for a legendary jazz band, a trans-national Ukrainian fusion group, or a Broadway star, we hope you will leave The Reser with a feeling of joy and a special connection to the people and the world around you.

Our Grand Opening week of events will begin with a special performance

by Nobuntu in commemoration of International Women’s Day. This female a cappella quintet from Zimbabwe, has drawn international acclaim for its inventive performances that range from traditional Zimbabwean songs to Afro Jazz to Gospel. Now, Nobuntu brings their pure voices, minimalistic percussion, traditional instruments, and authentic dance movements to the stage. Don’t miss this incomparable performance.

THE LEGENDARY COUNT BASIE ORCHESTRA

The Legendary Count Basie Orchestra Directed by Scotty Barnhart Featuring Vocalist Carmen Bradford Kicking off the Grand Opening weekend is The Legendary Count Basie Orchestra with vocalist Carmen Bradford.

This iconic jazz ensemble has won 18 Grammy Awards, performed for kings and queens, and has played at every major jazz festival and concert hall in the world.

In the history of jazz music, there is only one bandleader that has the distinction of having his orchestra still performing sold-out concerts all over the world, with members personally chosen by him, for over 30 years after his passing.

Pianist and bandleader William James “Count” Basie was, and still is, an American institution that personifies the grandeur and excellence of jazz.

NASSIM From Iranian playwright Nassim Soleimanpour comes an audacious theatrical experiment: each night a different performer joins the playwright on stage, while the script waits unseen in a sealed box. No rehearsals. A sealed envelope.

A new actor at every performance. And a few surprises. From the creator of the off-Broadway smash White Rabbit Red Rabbit, NASSIM is an innovative new play that explores the power of language and friendship. The New York Times calls it “an affectionate play about friendship.”

And the Hollywood Reporter raves it’s “exhilarating fun, but also touching, moving, and soulful.” NASSIM comes to The Reser directly from playing to sold-out audiences around the globe.

The Dream Again tour celebrates the 30th anniversary of Salonga recording the iconic Disney love song A Whole New World as Princess Jasmine in Aladdin in 1992. Younger fans will also recognize Salonga’s pitch-perfect tones as the singing voice of Fa Mulan in Mulan and Mulan II. These three films earned her the official title of Disney Legend.

GABRIEL KAHANE MAGNIFICENT BIRD WITH THE OREGON SYMPHONY

Equal parts raconteur, songwriter, and cultural critic.

Oregon Symphony joins The Reser’s Grand Opening Spring Season with the world premiere of Gabriel Kahane’s Magnificent Bird, a new song cycle written in the final month of a year-long, complete hiatus from the internet. Equal parts raconteur, songwriter, and cultural critic, Kahane promises to shepherd the audience through a cathartic evening that probes our individual and collective relationships to technology, and the consequences that emerge from the contemporary digital regime: to our planet, our body politic, our dignity, and, perhaps most crucially, our ability to love.

OREGON SYMPHONY BE AS WATER

In this wide-ranging meditation on the liquid we can’t live without, Handel’s irresistibly buoyant Water Music becomes a foil for five contemporary works that draw inspiration from water, at a time when the planet is increasingly imperiled. The concert is bookended by an electrifying percussion quartet by local favorite Andy Akiho and Nico Muhly’s 2007 masterpiece The Only Tune, and includes three works written by composers nominated for 2022 Grammy Awards. This performance by the Oregon Symphony will offer audiences an opportunity to hear Handel’s classic through fresh ears, while experiencing cutting-edge new works from rising stars Timo Andres, Gabriella Smith, and inti figgis-vizueta.

COLIN MELOY

Colin Meloy is an author and the frontman and songwriter for The Decemberists, which formed in Portland, OR in 2000. Since that time, the Grammy-nominated band has released eight albums including their latest, I’ll Be Your Girl, which was released in March 2018 on Capitol Records. Meloy has also recorded and toured as a solo artist. In 2013, he released the latest in a series of cover EPs, Colin Meloy Sings The Kinks. Previous recordings feature the music of Morrissey, Shirley Collins, and Sam Cooke, as well as a live album, Colin Meloy Sings Live!.

DAKHABRAKHA Hailing from Kyiv, Ukraine, DakhaBrakha reflects the fundamental elements of sound, soul, and “ethno-chaos” against a world of unexpected music. Accompanied by Indian, Arabic, African, Russian, and Australian traditional instrumentation, this quartet’s astonishingly powerful and uncompromising vocal range creates a transnational sound rooted in Ukrainian culture.

SEA SICK Written and performed by Alanna Mitchell Directed by Franco Boni with Ravi Jain Produced by The Theatre Centre Award-winning journalist Alanna Mitchell is a master storyteller, and this power is center stage in her mesmerizing solo show. Culled from her work with leading ocean scientists and infused with her innate ability to lure an audience in, Sea Sick tells Mitchell’s most important story: her journey to the bottom of the ocean, the demons she discovered there and, most importantly, her hope for the future.

SANTANA Flamenco Vivo Carlota Santana Dance Company upholds the purity and traditions of flamenco while pushing the boundaries of the art form in new directions. Innovative music, resounding cante hondo, exotic movements—the artists’ power and passion has electrified and educated audiences throughout the nation.

Flamenco Vivo is one of the nation’s premier flamenco and Spanish dance companies, and they believe that the universal spirit of flamenco, a multicultural art form, has the power to build bridges and inspire audiences from diverse backgrounds.

MARIACHI GARIBALDI DE JAIME CUÉLLAR

Mariachi Garibaldi de Jaime Cuéllar has captivated and delighted audiences at both intimate venues and major theaters throughout the United States, including the John Anson Ford Amphitheatre, Bakersfield Fox Theatre, and the Chicago’s Auditorium Theatre.

Founded in 1994 by Jaime Cuéllar, the ensemble of 8-12 mariachi musicians is now led by his son, Jimmy K. Cuéllar, a three-time Grammy Award winner.

KENNY ENDO Kenny Endo is a world-class taiko artist who continually paves new paths for this style of Japanese drumming. A performer, composer, and teacher of taiko with numerous awards and accolades, Endo is a consummate artist, blending Japanese taiko with global rhythms into original melodies and improvisation. A 45-year career taiko practitioner, Endo has paved the way for aspiring taiko drummers and remains a vanguard of the genre.

Friendship is at the heart of this joyful collaboration between Mexican songstress Sonia De Los Santos and the Americana folk duo The Okee Dokee Brothers. This bilingual program includes both old and new songs that span the musical traditions of North America, illustrating the collective power of song and community. With an adventurous spirit and a common vision of peace and understanding, Somos Amigos encourages audiences young and old to explore, dance, sing, and laugh together, hand-in-hand.

Celilo - Never Silenced March 1-June 5, 2022

Invisibilia: June 21 - Aug 7, 2022 Sandra Honda, Mei-ling Lee & Jefferson Goolsby Examining Asian-American identities through photographic journals, mixed media, and multimedia performance, three Oregon artists, Sandra Honda, Mei-ling Lee, and Jefferson Goolsby, share insights and perceptions of historical and contemporary experiences. Weaving together personal and imagined stories of daily life, family, trauma, and generational grief, the pieces portray beautiful and haunting details of loss and displacement. These creative works question beliefs and assumptions, while offering opportunities to view the world differently.

In our inaugural exhibition, we honor, respect, and memorialize events that took place more than sixty years ago. Celilo, Never Silenced features the creative talents of Indigenous artists Don Bailey, ​ Rick Bartow, Joe Cantrell, Jonnel Covault, Ed Edmo, Joe Fedderson, Analee F ​ uentes, Sean G ​ allagher, Lillian Pitt, Pah-tu Pitt, Richard Rowland, Sara Siestreem, Gail Tremblay, Richard York​, and Kyler Wang & Alan Zhou.

Our lives flow in historic currents, sometimes direct and personal, others more distant. Wyam (Celilo Falls), sacred and primary to Indigenous communities, was destroyed by The Dalles Dam in 1957, obliterating a way of life, a thriving fishery, and far more. The flooded Falls displaced those who celebrated and relied upon its essential life-giving forces, destroying a vital culture.
