RESER PRESENTS

LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

We want to acknowledge the people on whose land we live—the Atfalati-Kalapuyans, also known as the Tualatin Band of Kalapuyans—as the first inhabitants of Washington County. We are grateful for this Kalapuyan land. Today their descendants are tribal members of Grand Ronde and Siletz tribes, carrying on the traditions and cultures of their ancestors. We acknowledge and express gratitude for the ancestors of this place and recognize that we are here because of the sacrifices forced upon them. In remembering these communities, we honor their legacy, their lives, and their presence in our community.

A MESSAGE FROM OUR CHAIR /

Dear Patrons,

Over the past two-plus years, I’ve enjoyed receiving so many beautiful, heartfelt comments and words of appreciation:

Thank you for caring about Beaverton!

The Reser has become my new family.

I was living with a loneliness that wouldn’t let go. The Reser has brightened my life.

I’ve lived in Beaverton for 30+ years. I never thought I’d see this day.

I thank you for sharing such poignant feelings and lovely comments. Now, I’d like to share my feelings with you. Gratitude!

Yes, gratitude! The Reser is a beautiful space with state-of-the-art acoustics, an intimate “hug-shaped” auditorium, and vibrant art installations. But what truly fills my soul is YOU! It is all of you who bring life to this space; who’ve welcomed this creative endeavor into the heart of your lives, making it a vibrant thread in the fabric of our community.

I see many examples of The Reser becoming a life force running through the veins of our community. Attendance is rising, as we welcome both new and returning faces. Our gallery installations, lectures, and workshops are well-attended. Volunteering has become a coveted role.

We know that art influences society by translating experiences across space and time, which bring meaning to our lives and help us understand the world. We’ve heard from our patrons about how The Reser has encouraged community cohesion, thus re-

ducing those feelings of isolation. Simply interacting with others in our community invites new ideas that influence all the arts. It is interesting to note that as art influences society, society also influences the arts. The two become inseparable.

So, what kinds of experiences can we continue to expect of The Reser?

• Opportunities for contemplation and reflection as we ponder life’s mysteries.

• An escape from reality. As Pablo Picasso said so well, “Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life.”

• A place to gather, where healthy and thoughtful cultural experiences take place.

• Exposure to awe, wonder, and beauty.

• And finally, beyond its deeper meaning, an art experience that is also sheer fun, joy, and entertainment.

To me, The Reser is so much more than a creative endeavor. It’s a force that shapes, influences, and reflects our community. Its essence can be found in the details of our daily lives. I thank each of you for welcoming The Reser into your hearts. We will have a wonderful 2024-2025 season. And...

I’ll see you at The Reser!

A MESSAGE FROM OUR EXECUTIVE

DIRECTOR /

Welcome to The Reser’s 2024-25 Reser Presents season!

This year we are delighted to bring back some of your favorites, and many new offerings we hope you will enjoy, including a new solo cabaret show by Ari Shapiro, Broadway star Shoshana Bean in her homecoming, Phillip Glass’ Dracula with Third Angle New Music, collaborations with the Oregon Symphony and 45th Parallel, Selected Shorts from New York, Lindy West, and the debut of National Geographic LIVE at The Reser. Soul musician and force-for-good Ron Artis II makes his return to The Reser in a special performance—preceded by our first ever community residency—where he will visit schools, offer a master class, and co-create a work with a local choir.

This year also brings new programming from our art gallery, with several thought provoking and inclusive exhibitions. Additionally, we eagerly anticipate the expansion of our arts education classes for people of all ages to complement our school performances, and our free community and education events.

As I write and reflect on where we have been since opening two and a half years ago, I think about distilling down all that we do at The Reser. What inspires me most is that we seek to create meaning for you. We create fun and entertaining experiences. We present provocative

ideas and artists on our stage and in our gallery. In the end, the arts, and The Reser, bring people together to create meaning. Meaningful shared experiences create a better, more cohesive, and connected society. If each one of you walked out of The Reser with a slightly different perspective—a bit kinder, more willing to listen to a new and differing point of view— then we have done our job. Our long-term vision is to become an indispensable part of this community, and a force for good for you and your loved ones. I welcome you to join us in getting there.

Thank you to our many generous supporters. I invite you to learn more at thereser.org, and I look forward to meeting you at The Reser!

Yours,

OUR SPONSORS /

Thanks to the support, encouragement, and advocacy of our partners, The Reser has proudly lived its mission to foster community and build meaningful connections around this stunning facility—and the breathtaking performances that bring it to life.

Hexagons is a new work inspired by the magical realism of Argentine author Jorge Luis Borges’s 1939 short story, “The Library of Babel.” In this enigmatic narrative, Borges conjures a captivating and perplexing universe where the notion of infinity collides with the fragility of human understanding. Pets and parents die, dreams get downsized, and it turns out that castles aren’t magical at all—they’re just wet, stinking military installations built to fortify the immoral power of horrible men. Outrageous! In Every Castle, Ranked, a now 40-something Lindy takes us on a hilarious, bittersweet journey through her own disillusionment, finding hope again at 40, and the history of toilets.

Hailed as a master of tradition who dares to deconstruct the art form, Guerrero draws on her deep knowledge of traditional flamenco but pushes past the restriction of its rules. In doing so, she seeks to extract and display the invisible fifth element, the essence of flamenco itself.
