LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
We want to acknowledge the people on whose land we gather—the AtfalatiKalapuyans, also known as the Tualatin Band of Kalapuyans—as the first inhabitants of Washington County. We are grateful for this Kalapuyan land. Today their descendants are tribal members of Grand Ronde and Siletz tribes, carrying on the traditions and cultures of their ancestors. We acknowledge and express gratitude for the ancestors of this place and recognize that we are here because of the sacrifices forced upon them. In remembering these communities, we honor their legacy, their lives, and their continuation in our community.
March 1, 2022, was an auspicious day. On that day we welcomed the greater Beaverton community, our donors, and our friends into the Patricia Reser Center for the Arts! This photo commemorates the culmination of two special moments in our journey—“from the shovel to the scissors in two plus years amidst a pandemic!”
And then...Aaron Copland’s Fanfare for the Common Man performed by the Oregon Symphony and Oregon’s Poet Laureate, Anis Mojgani’s spoken word, ‘Come Closer.’ Who can forget the chills? It was from these moments that we began to feel a sense of place, a feeling of connectedness be it physical, emotional, or spiritual.
So, what is the value of a sense of place, one might ask? How do we go about creating the desire within us, that feeling of ‘longing for’ or ‘belonging to’ a place we are just becoming familiar with?
Wendell Berry, American novelist, stated, “If you don’t know where you are, you don’t know who you are.” Perhaps it is the human attachment and stories linked to places that make them unique. That sense of place refers, then, to the narrative of the place.
How are we, at The Reser, developing our narrative of a sense of place? First, we think of ourselves as a place that elicits a new way of seeing. Our programming reflects that thought because we acknowledge what matters is the way place has the power to alter our worldview, the opportunity to see the world through someone else’s eyes. We
also acknowledge that a sense of place is not static but rather evolves and changes over time. It requires that we involve imagination and memory as we pledge to consider our past, present and future efforts to gain a greater understanding of our communities, to make sure The Reser remains your place.
So, what is it I desire for this magnificent place on Crescent Street? It’s my desire for this place to become your place, one that fosters curiosity, provides an environment for the exchange of ideas, and one that helps people of all ages and backgrounds build connections. I invite you to use all your senses, take note of details, pay attention to dialogue, look up as you become of this place and not just in it. In closing, I share this Apache proverb...‘Wisdom sits in places.’
Welcome to the 2022-23 Inaugural Season at The Reser.
PAT RESER / CHAIR
Welcome to the Patricia Reser Center for the Arts.
I am excited to invite you to the Reser Presents Inaugural 2022-23 Season – a diverse array of performances and art gallery exhibits we believe you deserve to see.
Our Reser Presents series brings the world to our stage for you. In the pages of this brochure, you will find a season of performances by bold, award-winning artists, deeply personal stories, and fun concerts for the entire family. We are sure you will enjoy these offerings, and we hope you will discover something new that brings you fulfillment.
Ever since our opening in the spring, I have had the privilege of meeting and hearing from many of you. Thousands from around the region and beyond have already attended performances, free art gallery exhibits and talks, and various meetings, events, and classes. People have shared their joy with us, commenting about the experience, the quality, and the eclectic, international mix of programming on stage and in the art gallery. Acclaimed performing artists from around the world and local arts and community organizations have performed on stage or held special events at The Reser. They have told us how The Reser has fast become one of their favorite venues to perform in because of the friendly professional support of our staff, the superb acoustics, and the connection they feel with all of you –our warm and receptive audience – because of the intimacy of the theater.
Whether you have already been to The Reser, or you are considering attending for the first time, we welcome you with open arms. And we are just getting started. Over the next couple of years, we will build on our initial success with expanded education and community outreach programs for people of all ages and backgrounds. Like all nonprofit arts organizations, ticket sales only cover a portion of our costs. We rely on the generosity of our supporters to help us bring these programs to the community. Please consider becoming a Member, making a donation to our annual fund, and staying in touch by signing up to our newsletter at thereser.org.

PINK MARTINI WITH CHINA FORBES & STORM LARGE
Pink Martini was founded by bandleader and pianist Thomas M. Lauderdale in 1994 to provide beautiful performances at fundraisers and galas for progressive causes, with a style inspired by Latin, big band, classical, and the Golden Age of Hollywood. Lauderdale’s friend from their time at Harvard, China Forbes, moved to Portland to become lead singer, and they released their landmark album Sympathique in 1997. Soon this “little orchestra” was touring the globe with a dozen or more musicians, singing in over 20 languages, and performing at legendary venues such as Carnegie Hall, Royal Albert Hall, the Sydney Opera House, and the Hollywood Bowl. Twenty-eight years later, Pink Martini has released nine studio albums and numerous side projects under their own label, Heinz Records. They are proud to call Oregon home.

DAKHABRAKHA
Hailing from Kyiv, Ukraine, DakhaBrakha reflects the fundamental elements of sound, soul, and “ethno-chaos” against a world of unexpected music. Accompanied by Indian, Arabic, African, Russian, and Australian traditional instrumentation, this quartet’s astonishingly powerful and uncompromising vocal range creates a transnational sound rooted in Ukrainian culture.
September 30 7:30 pm
DAKHABRAKHA + EARTH
In the history of jazz music, there is only one bandleader that has the distinction of having his orchestra still performing sold-out concerts all over the world, with members personally chosen by him, for over 30 years after his passing.
Following an unforgettable set of concerts, DakhaBrakha returns to The Reser by popoular demand. With their multicultural traditional instrumentation, theatrical costuming, and astonishingly powerful vocal range, the quartet creates a transnational sound rooted in Ukrainian soil—all while gaining enormous critical acclaim and a large global fanbase.
Pianist and bandleader William James “Count” Basie was, and still is, an American institution that personifies the grandeur and excellence of jazz.
DakhaBrakha provides the live musical score to the legendary 1930 Ukrainian silent film masterpiece Earth. Directed by Alexander Dovzhenko, Earth is considered to be one of the most important films of the Soviet era. Dovzhenko is a master composer, and the film—with its intense close-ups and expansive landscapes—is a passionate tribute to nature and those who live and work within it.

Experience the Northwest premiere of a deeply moving new work by Argentinian-American composer Osvaldo Golijov. Falling Out of Time, composed for a multicultural, multi-stylistic instrumental ensemble, and presented in a semi-staged performance. Based on the eponymous book by Israeli author David Grossman, the piece is a gripping song cycle that explores parents’ sorrow as they mourn the loss of a child. Golijov’s eclectic music draws on Delta blues and Central Asian ballads to tell a tale of grief and a journey to acceptance. Commissioned by Silkroad and featuring members of the wide-ranging Silkroad Ensemble, the evocative score weaves a tapestry of sound that draws on Chinese, European, and Middle Eastern musical traditions.

THE SIXTRIPLEEIGHT: NO MAIL, LOW MORALE
In February 1945, the U.S. Army sent 855 Black women from the Women’s Army Corps (WACs) to England and France to clear the backlog of mail in the European Theater of Operations. The 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, known as the SixTripleEight, was the only all-Black female battalion to serve in Europe during WWII. The battalion served with honor and distinction, completing their mission in six months despite facing racism and sexism from leadership and fellow troops. By War’s end, the SixTripleEight had cleared over 17 million pieces of backlogged mail, ensuring the soldiers stayed in touch with their loved ones back home. The women were never publicly recognized…until now.
