Almighty and eternal God, those who take refuge in you will be glad and forever will shout for joy. Protect these soldiers as they discharge their duties. Protect them with the shield of your strength and keep them safe from all evil and harm. May the power of your love enable them to return home in safety, that with all who love them, they may ever praise you for your loving care. We ask this through Christ our Lord.

The mystery of the Holy Trinity, one God in three persons, is something we celebrate and are familiar with. We begin all things in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Mass, in particular, begins and ends with the sign of the cross. We baptize using the Trinitarian formula, and bless ourselves thusly every time we enter a sacred space. As such, the fact that we dedicate a Sunday to the Trinity is no mystery to the faithful. But WHY we do it, and WHEN we do it has some significance.
In the early church, there was no special feast day dedicated to the trinity. However, as the belief in the triune God is a core tenet of Catholic faith, there were many devotions to the Trinity, and during the 11th century, it was petitioned to have a special feast. This was rejected by Pope Alexander II, with his rationale that the daily glorification of the Trinity through the Trinitarian blessings and doxological recitations (the “through him and with him…in the unity of the holy spirit” that concludes the liturgy of the eucharist, and the gloria patri included at the end of psalms and other prayers) was sufficient.
The Son is not the Father, the Father is not the Spirit, the Spirit is not the Father, etc…but all are God! Later, in the 14th century, Pope John XXII did indeed order the feast to be celebrated on the Sunday after Pentecost, and in the modern era after the second Vatican Council, has the rank of a Solemnity. This date was chosen as it was the Sunday following the fulfillment of the promise Christ made to his disciples. The Father sent the Son, and through the intercession of the Son, thus followed the Spirit. As the Trinity was so recognized by Christ’s own disciples, so too would that now be celebrated by all the faithful.
Justin, a layman, was the first great apologist of Christianity and a number of his lengthy writings remain with us today. Born of Greco-Roman parents, Justin received the best liberal education available in his day. He studied rhetoric, history, poetry, and was especially interested in philosophy. But none of the philosophers whom he studied seemed to have exactly what he was looking for
One day, as Justin was walking near the seashore pondering one of Plato’s maxims, he found himself being followed by a venerable looking old man. This stranger aroused Justin’s interest by telling him of a philosophy more virtuous and satisfying than any he had studied to that time. It was one, the man told him, revealed by God to the Israelite prophets of ancient times which had reached its culmination in Jesus Christ. Inspired by the man’s words, Justin began a study of Scripture and undertook to learn more about Christianity. Justin was baptized when he was about thirty.
Up to this time, Christianity’s beliefs and practices were largely unknown to those outside of the faith. Justin, however, felt that many people would accept Christianity if it were presented to them properly. He began teaching and writing about the Christian faith and also about what took place at their secret meetings (the celebration of the Eucharist).
Traveling to various lands, Justin debated with pagan philosophers, heretics, and Jews. Eventually, he came to Rome where he argued in public with a Cynic named Crescens. Having bested Crescens in the debate, Justin earned his hatred. Crescens denounced Justin as a Christian and Justin, together with six other Christians, was brought before the Roman prefect, Rusticus, for trial. After admitting his Christianity and refusing to sacrifice to the Roman gods, Justin and the others were condemned to torture and death….Read More HERE.

“In the beginning I was trying to go it alone. I was reading the Bible by myself, and even though it’s a very strong time and emotional time to sit and read the Bible, I learned that you can’t go it alone. You need community. To be part of the Catholic Church is that bigger part that was missing.” – Kyle
Being a Catholic means being part of a spiritual family. Often, it can be your flesh-andblood family, or it can be a close friend who invites you to “come and see.” As you enter the Church, the parish community and the RCIA Program will walk with you on your journey of faith.
This book by Bishop Robert Barron was gifted to all parishioners for Pentecost.
This Is My Body: A Call to Eucharistic Revival is designed to accompany the revival. In this brief but illuminating text, Bishop Barron offers a threefold analysis of the Eucharist as sacred meal, sacrifice, and Real Presence, helping readers to understand the sacrament of Jesus’ Body and Blood more thoroughly so that they might fall in love with him more completely.

My Dear Parishioners:
Today we celebrate The Solemnity of The Most Holy Trinity. Liturgy does for us what the Deuteronomy texts did for Israel of old: helps us remember God’s mighty deeds and enter into a covenantal relationship with the Divine. Liturgy calls us to gather to as, “Who is this God?” Knowing God isn’t something we can find out in the abstract; knowing God is dependent concretely on our doing—in taking up Christ’s mission and living our own privileged identity as daughters and sons of God “until the end of the age.” Without doing as Jesus did, we cannot answer “Who is God?” This doing is nothing less than to “suffer with” Christ (second reading), which means a constant dying to self. By our own self-emptying are we filled with the divine identity.
The Solemnity of Pentecost was a wonderful experience this year. Thanks to all those who wore some article of clothing that was red. This helped us to decorate the Church building. Also many thanks to those who joined us to support Deacon Richard Gerbino as he begins his ministry as an ordained Deacon of our Catholic church currently assigned to our parish. Thanks to those who helped to prepare the liturgy and reception that followed.
The Liturgical Season of Ordinary Time has begun and continues through and including the Solemnity of Jesus Christ, King of the Universe this coming November. The Summer Mass Schedule begins: Saturday 5:00pm; Sunday 8, 10, 12. We will observe and abbreviated Mass Schedule this weekend: 25/26 May; Saturday 5pm & Sunday 10am. Please make a note in your personal schedules. We will observe the abbreviated Schedule the weekends before and after Independence Day and the Weekend of Labor Day this Summer.
Join us for Mass this Monday at 9:00am in the Chapel as we observe the Civic Memorial Holiday. This is a wonderful way to pray for all those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. The Colts Neck Recreation Department will sponsor the annual Memorial Day Parade at 10:00amish beginning at the municipal complex along Heyers Mill Road with a cere-
mony at Memorial Park and concluding at the Fire House. This is a great way to talk with children and young people about the true reason for Memorial Day.
Next Sunday we celebrate the Solemnity of Corpus Christi. The Eucharist is the center of our life as Roman Catholic Christians. It is the Eucharist that makes the Church and it is the Church that makes the Eucharist. Everything we do and who we are flows from the Eucharist. That is why the Church instructs us to come to mass each and every Sunday and to receive the Holy Eucharist as frequently as we can. It is also a time for us to think about how we approach the Eucharist in the Communion procession. Are we reverent and focused? Do we have our hands flatly positioned to receive, not take, the Eucharistic host? Do we step aside to place the host in our mouths rather than walking away with the sacred species in our hands?
We also honor the Sacred Heart of Jesus in a special way this month. May we learn mercy and compassion through our prayerful devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. We honor the Apostles Saints Peter and Paul later in the month. They remind us of our mission to reach out to all and share the Gospel in word and deed.
There is a lot happening around our parish these days. Master Calendar preparations are underway for 202425; Capital Budget items are being identified; FYE 2022 Budget is close to being finalized; Staff Salary proposals are being reviewed; Preparations for Summer Religious Education Classes; Thank you for all that you are doing to enable our parish to serve the needs in our community. Many thanks to all those who have made a gift or pledge to the 2024 Annual Catholic Appeal. Thank you for the sacrifices that you make so that the vibrancy of this community continues to support the efforts of the larger diocesan church and our Most Reverend Bishop. Have a great week. Let us remember one another in prayer. Happy Sunday. Peace. Father Jeff
