Maria Goretti, Virgin and Martyr, 1890-1902

Saints don’t necessarily have to have lived a long, sanctified life. This saint was only 12 years old when she was martyred.

Born the third of seven children to a poor farmer near Ancona, Italy, Maria was described by her mother as “happy, good, openhearted, without whim, but with a sense and seriousness far beyond her years, and never disobedient.” The family’s circumstances meant that even the children had to work as farmhands for other people. Because of this, Maria and the other children received no schooling.

Request a Sanctuary Lamp ($25 stipend)

Request a Mass Intention ($10 stipend)

Requests may also be submitted in person at the Parish Office during operating hours.

When Maria was 9, her father died. Maria’s mother, sisters, and brother continued to work the fields while Maria cooked, sewed, and kept house for the family. At the age of 11, Maria received her First Communion, but the strongest test of her faith was yet to come. Read

FOR DEEPER REFLECTION

We are called to evangelize

Question for Children:

How do you let others know about your faith?

Question for Youth:

Jesus sent the disciples out into the world, but told them that it wouldn’t be an easy job. How have you shared your faith with others this past week? What were the risks for you?

Question for Adults:

To what part of the harvest are you being sent? What are you being called to do for the Reign of God?

Almighty and eternal God, those who take refuge in you will be glad and forever will shout for joy. Protect these soldiers as they discharge their duties. Protect them with the shield of your strength and keep them safe from all evil and harm. Saint Benedict, Abbot

Saint Benedict (ca480-542) is considered the father of monasticism in the Catholic church. Monasticism has had a long lineage in Christian life, going back to its founding in Egypt in the 4th century AD, which we have learned of from the writings of the desert fathers such as Saint Anthony of Egypt. The monastic life was one of heroic virtue, with some monks practicing long fasts and other ascetic practices, which led to their admiration by their followers. St. Benedict, however, was of a more practical mind. He wanted to create a model of monastic life that would make it possible for ordinary men to follow every day. He also wanted to create a community - with the abbot as the father guiding the monks in the daily practice of work and prayer.

St. Benedict summed up his ideals in the Rule of St Benedict which became one of the foundation documents of Western Christianity. In its 73 chapters, it lays out how an individual monk may live each day with his mind on Christ as he works and prays. The Rule also covers the duties of the abbot running the monastery as a father, leading the community to live in harmony with God and one another. This would be the basis on which centuries of monastic life would flourish and give to Western Christianity a model of stability on which Western culture could grow.

Saint Benedict is the patron saint of European civilization and of students. His feast day is July 11th.

Help Commemorate Bishop O’Connell’s 15th Episcopal Anniversary!

As we mark the 15th anniversary of Bishop David M. O’Connell’s episcopal ordination and his faithful ministry among us, all are invited to take part in a diocesan-wide tribute.

In the spirit of the Jubilee Year and honoring the Bishop’s Vincentian background, we encourage parishioners to carry out a Corporal Work of Mercy between now and August 15 for the Bishop’s intentions. These acts of compassion such as feeding the hungry, visiting the sick, or clothing the poor will be gathered and offered as a “bouquet of good works” in celebration of his anniversary.

Please refer suggestions provided below, but feel free to be creative in how you live out these acts of love:

The Corporal Works of Mercy

1. Feed the Hungry: Make a monetary donation to a charity Donate to a food pantry Serve at a soup kitchen Prepare lunch for the homeless Make a meal for someone who is homebound

2. Shelter the Homeless: Volunteer at a homeless shelter Donate to an orphanage or foster care program Help an elderly neighbor with home repairs, cleaning, or errands

3. Clothe the Naked: Contribute to a clothing drive Donate to a maternity center Support your parish outreach or St. Vincent de Paul Conference

4. Visit the Sick and Imprisoned: Volunteer at a hospital or nursing facility Prepare a meal or run errands for a sick neighbor Send a card or letter to someone who is ill Donate rosaries, Bibles, or other spiritual items to a jail

5. Bury the Dead: Attend a funeral for a relative or friend Help a widow or widower with errands or support Visit and pray at a cemetery Have a Mass offered for the souls in purgatory

Please fill out the form HERE to let us know how your family will participate! Pledges Due July 8th!

My Dear Parishioners:

Quo vadis...

Today we celebrate the Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time. In our own times, we are not so conscious of personified evil as in the time of Jesus. Demons represent a worldview; God’s kingdom breaks in on this evil and establishes a new world order in which evil’s grasp is broken. The establishment of God’s reign is already an inbreaking of the final glory that will be ours our “names are [already] written in heaven.” References to the abundance of the end times are captured in the “harvest” metaphor Jesus uses. Jesus looks at the harvest and sees abundance, fulfillment. Some of this abundance and fulfillment is surely realized in our own taking up of Jesus’ mission to bring peace, heal, and dispel evil. The challenge of the gospel is that we don’t get so lost in doing Jesus’ mission that we forget being disciples ambassadors of Christ is in itself already an inbreaking of God’s reign. It is in Christ’s presence through us that peace and joy are spread. Living the paschal mystery means believing in what God has made us ambassadors of Christ, members of his body. It means that we are as satisfied with the presence we bring as we are with the good that we can do. Mission is being sent to be Christ for others. Only when we act out of our identity can anything we do help establish God’s reign.

This weekend we will observe an abbreviated Mass schedule. Thank you for your cooperation. We are busy preparing for the Summer Religious Education Sessions. We are able to offer several options for our parish families because of your support if our parish. The first summer session

held in July is offered virtually. The young people log in for their classes from many places in this country and abroad. The second session is offered on our parish campus during the month of August. Let us pray for all 5hose involved in the formation and education of our children and young people.

We are preparing for a new fiscal year beginning 1 July as well as a new calendar year 2026. We are pleased to continue to provide the Mass Intention Scheduler online. This provides an opportunity to request a mass intention when convenient without coming into the office. I have received positive feedback. Also, I have noticed former parishioners who have moved out if state are able to request intentions when family friends die. Last year we announced, after lots of consultation, that beginning Advent 2025 the daily mass on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday will be celebrated here at St. Mary. Weekday masses for Thursday, Friday and Saturday will be celebrated at St. Catharine, Holmdel.

We will maintain the 9am time at both locations. This allows us to provide the opportunity for daily mass within our co-hort as well as covering for one another in serving the people of God. Thank you for you kind understanding.

We continue to make progress toward our ACA goal. Thank you for your support and sacrifice. Have a great week. Let us remember one another in prayer. Happy Independence Day. Happy Sunday. Peace. Father Jeff

Caring for Our Parishioners

Periodically, we receive calls from elderly, shut-in, and/or disabled Parishioners seeking help with some needed tasks such as food shopping, transportation to medical appointments, light cleanup, or just for an hour or so of conversation and companionship. If you feel that you may have the time and interest to share of yourself in this way, please call the Office of Charitable Appeals at (732) 294-8841 ext. 320.

High School Graduates

As a parish community we recognize the need to support graduates in staying connected to the Catholic Church after they graduate.

With more than 80% of high school students leaving their faith in college, we need a way to connect graduates to the next step in their faith journey.

Our parish has partnered with Newman Connection. Newman Connection connects graduating high school students to the Catholic campus ministry of their chosen college (whether it is a Catholic college or not). Connect directly with Newman Ministries HERE

The Church’s observance of World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly, July 27, 2025, is also a time to remember and care for our “spiritual grandparents,” Bishop David M. O’Connell, C.M., said in announcing the annual collection for retired and elderly priests.

Scheduled in the parishes of the Diocese of Trenton at Masses July 26 and 27, the special collection for the Retired, Elderly and Infirm Priests Fund is a way for the faithful to thank the more than 80 retired priests who have given the witness of their lives of faith, many of whom still continue to offer Masses and share the Sacraments in our parishes.

The Bishop states, “I invite all the clergy and faithful of the Diocese, once again, to show the generosity for which I have come to know you so well by contributing to the fourth annual collection for the priests who truly are our spiritual grandfathers. They, too, deserve our love and gratitude in their twilight years!”

RETROUVAILLE: REDISCOVER THE LOVE IN YOUR MARRIAGE

Tens of thousands of couples have healed their marriages through Retrouvaille (pronounced Retro-vy). If you know anyone who could benefit from this program, please pass this on. Couples learn to build communication skills and to increase intimacy. It provides help for marriage problems, difficulties or crises. The next program will be held August 1 - 3, 2025 at the Family Life Center in Malvern, PA. For more information, or to register, visit HelpOurMarriage.org or call 215766-3944 or 800-470-2230.
