Pentecost Sunday
The Solemnity of Pentecost occurs 50 days after Easter. Because Easter is a moveable feast without a fixed date, and Pentecost depends on the timing of Easter, Pentecost can fall anywhere between May 10 and June 13.
The timing of these feasts is also where Catholics get the concept of the Novena - nine days of prayer - In Acts 1, Mary and the Apostles prayed together continuously for nine days after the Ascension (40 days after Easter) as they awaited the coming of the Spirit.
Pentecost is the celebration of the Holy Spirit coming upon the Apostles, Mary, and the first followers of Jesus, who were gathered together in the Upper Room.
A “strong, driving” wind filled the room where they were gathered, and tongues of fire came to rest on their heads, allowing them to speak in different languages so that they could understand each other, and also gave the apostles the other gifts and fruits necessary to fulfill the great commission - to go out and preach the Gospel to all nations. It fulfills the New Testament promise from Christ (Luke 24:46-49) that the Apostles would be “clothed with power” before they would be sent out to spread the Gospel. This is also considered to be the birth of the Church, as after this, the Apostles were confident to travel far and wide, and make disciples of all the nations.
DIACONATE ORDINATION
Bishop David M. O'Connell, C.M. will preside the Diaconate Ordination Mass at the Cathedral of St Mary of the Assumption on Saturday May 18 at 10 AM. One of our parishioners, Richard “Rich” Gerbino, will receive the Sacrament of Holy Orders in the order of permanent deacon at that ceremony. Please join us at this Mass to celebrate Rich and the other men being ordained deacons for our Diocese. Sunday May 19, Solemnity of Pentecost, at the 12 noon mass, the newly ordained Deacon Rich will serve at the Mass and give the homily for the first time. After the mass, light refreshments will be served, and we will have the chance to congratulate Rich in his new ministry. Please join us for this important celebration.
Joan of Arc, Virgin, 1412-1431
Joan was the youngest of five children of Jacques d’Arc, a peasant farmer. She was only thirteen when she experienced the first of her visions, which she described as a voice accompanied by a blaze of light. She later identified the voices as those of St. Michael, St. Catherine, St. Margaret and others. They revealed to Joan that her mission in life was to save France by assisting the Dauphin, the rightful heir to the throne of France.
When she tried to embark on her mission, she was scoffed at by the French commander and initially ignored by the Dauphin, who preferred the life of luxury to pursuing his father’s throne. Eventually, however, Joan convinced the civil and church authorities that she was not a heretic and did have a mission to save France. Clothed in a suit of white armor, Joan led an expedition to relieve the besieged city of Orléans. After this success, she gained a great victory over the British and, shortly after, captured Troyes. “In the beginning I was trying to go it alone. I was reading the Bible by myself, and even though it’s a very strong time and emotional time to sit and read the Bible, I learned that you can’t go it alone. You need community. To be part of the Catholic Church is that bigger part that was missing.” – Kyle
Being a Catholic means being part of a spiritual family. Often, it can be your flesh-andblood family, or it can be a close friend who invites you to “come and see.” As you enter the Church, the parish community and the RCIA Program will walk with you on your journey of faith.

Quo vadis for May 19. .
My Dear Parishioners:
This weekend we celebrate the Solemnity of Pentecost. The Spirit is given for the sake of mission, but the Spirit’s indwelling affects each of us personally, too. Our baptism-Pentecost requires that each of us die to ourselves and to anything that is evidence of our own sinfulness (second reading: “immorality, impurity, lust, idolatry, sorcery, hatreds, rivalry, jealousy, outbursts of fury, acts of selfishness, dissensions, factions, occasions of envy, drinking bouts, orgies, and the like”). When we choose to die to ourselves we experience the new life that comes in the Spirit: “live, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, gentleness, self-control.” When the two lists are laid out side by side like this the choice seems rather easy and obvious: live in the Spirit so as to have the fruit of the Spirit. In our everyday lives the choice isn’t always so clear and easy. Our temptations to “works of the flesh” might be more subtle; for example, letting ourselves get too tired to respond charitably, choosing to sit watching TV rather than really talking with one’s spouse or children, getting by on our tasks rather than doing the best we can. The dying is most often in the little things! Come, Holy Spirit!
This weekend, Saturday 18 May 2024 at the Cathedral of Saint Mary of the Assumption in Trenton, Richard Gerbino will receive the Sacrament of Holy Orders as a Deacon of the Church. We congratulate Rich, his wife Maria and their family We offer our prayerful support as Deacon Rich begins ministry as a deacon of the church serving our Diocese of Trenton and our Parish of Saint Mary. Dea con Rich will offer the homily at 12 Noon, Sunday, 19 May in our parish church. There will be light refreshments following the mass in the Narthex.
This Solemnity concludes the Liturgical Season of Easter. We begin the Liturgical Season of Ordinary Time on Monday. The coming Sundays are
Solemnities within Ordinary Time, Trinity Sunday and then Corpus Christi. We will return to the Mass Setting from the Roman Missal throughout the Summer months. The liturgical color is Green during Ordinary Time and the decorations are simplified. During the Month of June the Church observes the Feast Day of Saint Anthony of Padua, The Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, The Feast of Saint John the Baptist, & the Solemnity of Sts. Peter & Paul.
Congratulations and THANK YOU to all those who have participated in the 2024 Easter Collection. Your faithful deliberate Stewardship of Treasure enables our parish to continue providing the very best for our parishioners and all those whom we serve. We have listed an overview of the gifts received this year as well as some facts from previous years. Next Monday, 27 May, is the civic holiday in which we honor those who have given their lives in maintaining the freedom that we enjoy. Memorial Day is an opportunity for us to come and pray for all our men and women in uniform, especially those who have died. Mass will be celebrated at 9:00am. Come and begin your holiday observance by receiving Holy Communion and praying for all those who have given their lives for the freedom we enjoy. Also, there is a parade in Colts Neck along Heyers Mill Road. Come and be a part of this great local tradition.
Memorial Day Weekend begins the Summer Mass Schedule (through Labor Day Weekend) and we will observe an abbreviated mass schedule on Saturday and Sunday (as well as Independence & Labor Day Weekends). Please be mindful as you prepare for mass next weekend. Have a great week. Let us remember one another in prayer. Happy Sunday. Peace! Father Jeff
