Protect them with the shield of your strength and keep them safe from all evil and harm. May the power of your love enable them to return home in safety, that with all who love them, they may ever praise you for your loving care. We ask this through Christ our Lord.

The Solemnity of the Ascension, traditionally celebrated 40 days after Easter, is as such to make symmetry with the 40 days of Lent that precede the Sacred Paschal Triduum. The Solemnity of Pentecost, which occurs on the 50th day after Easter, allows for a novena (9 days of prayer) to be observed between the two celebrations.
At least, that is what we are used to. In the United States, the ecclesiastical provinces of Boston, Hartford, New York, Newark, Omaha, and Philadelphia observe Ascension Thursday as a Holy Day of Obligation. This includes: Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New York, New Jersey*, Nebraska, and Pennsylvania. In all other US provinces, the Solemnity is transferred to and replaces the 7th Sunday of Easter. While this may allow a greater convenience to the faithful, especially in those areas of the country where priests are at an even greater shortage and parishes are many miles apart, the symbolism of the numbers falls to the wayside, as do the readings for the 7th Sunday of Easter.
* In 2022, the Archdiocese of Newark permanently transferred the Ascension to the 7th Sunday of Easter, thus we will observe this Solemnity this weekend.
This solemnity commemorates Jesus’ ascension into heaven, an important tenet of our Catholic Christian faith, professed in both the Apostle’s Creed and the Niceno-Constantinopolitan Creed. The Ascension event is a key component of our understanding of the post-Easter narratives and the concept of the holy trinity. This event is the return of the Son to the Father which precedes the coming of the Holy Spirit upon the apostles 10 days later. Another key theological aspect ties into the resurrection - Jesus was resurrected by the will of the Father and through the Father’s power, but Jesus ascends by his own will and power, the final earthly manifestation of his might and glory.
Bishop David M. O'Connell, C.M. will preside the Diaconate Ordination Mass at the Cathedral of St Mary of the Assumption on Saturday May 18 at 10 AM. One of our parishioners, Richard “Rich” Gerbino, will receive the Sacrament of Holy Orders in the order of permanent deacon at that ceremony. Please join us at this Mass to celebrate Rich and the other men being ordained deacons for our Diocese.
Sunday May 19, Solemnity of Pentecost, at the 12 noon mass, the newly ordained Deacon Rich will serve at the Mass and give the homily for the first time. After the mass, light refreshments will be served, and we will have the chance to congratulate Rich in his new ministry. Please join us for this important celebration.
Unlike his namesake honored on April 4, this Isidore was not well educated; nevertheless, he had a lasting influence on the people of Spain. Born of poor parents in Madrid, Isidore began working in the fields of a wealthy Madrid landowner, John de Vargas, when he was very young. He spent his whole life in those fields.
Isidore’s parents instilled a great love of prayer and a revulsion of sin in him. He rose early each morning to go to Mass and, while laboring all day in the fields, communed with God and the saints. But his attendance at daily Mass angered some of his fellow workers, as it caused Isidore to arrive later at work than they did. John de Vargas hid himself one day to confirm this and, sure enough, Isidore did arrive after his co-workers. De Vargas was about to take him to task for his lateness when he saw a team of snow-white oxen plowing the field parallel to Isidore’s team. With unknown figures driving this team, de Vargas realized that supernatural help was compensating for the work that Isidore missed. Thereafter John de Vargas came to admire his field hand and Isidore is said to have worked miracles for the benefit of his employer’s family. Read More HERE.

My Dear Parishioners:
Today we celebrate The Solemnity of the Ascension of Our Lord Jesus Christ. This year, the Solemnity has been transferred from Thursday to Sunday. It is a central teaching of our Church. That is Jesus was taken up into heaven and is seated at the right of God. It is from this return to heaven that the Holy Spirit is sent upon the apostles and their successors who serve our church.
The lectionary readings for the Seventh Sunday of Easter should not be lost this year. The first reading gives us one instance of how Jesus keeps, protects, and guards us. Peter announces to the gathered disciples that “it is necessary” that Judas be replaced as one of the Twelve. Necessary. This suggests that there is more to the Twelve than leadership and mission. After all, Matthias could have been leader of a Christian community and carried on Jesus’ mission without being chosen by lot to be numbered among the Twelve countless men and women have done so since that time, including ourselves. The action is symbolic—the Lord’s disciples must be “complete” bringing the number back to twelve suggests that the new Israel will be whole, kept, guarded, protected and able to fruitfully carry forth Jesus’ mission. The second reading gives us another instance Jesus sent the Spirit to be with us to ensure that we remain in him. Our own lives witness to other instances of how Jesus keeps, protects, and guards us—when we have those moments of inspiration, when we know exactly what to do in a tough situation, when we are tired yet choose to lend a helping hand and this action brings a radiant smile, when we are lost for comforting words and then they just seem to flow from us. These are times when we know Jesus is still praying for us. All of the confidence and protection Jesus promises in his prayer rests on our surrendering to Jesus’ discipleship—we must speak words of truth to a world that may or may not receive our words. John’s “world” is everything that is opposed to Jesus yet
God clearly loves the world because the Son was sent to redeem the world. We may die because of the hatred the world has for the truth; but what life we find in God’s love. As we reflect on the mystery or the Ascension of Jesus Christ, we are reassured that God provides for the Church even in our time.
Next weekend the Church observes the Solemnity of Pentecost which concludes the Liturgical Season of Easter (50 days). The Concluding Rites of the Mass specify that we intone the dismissal with the double alleluia as a reminder that Pentecost concludes the Easter Season. Just a reminder…wear something RED next weekend when coming to church! This will assist us in “decorating our place of worship” for this great solemnity. We will provide an accounting of the 2024 Easter Collection. Later this month, Memorial Day, we celebrate the lives of those women and men who have given their lives in service to our country and the freedom that we enjoy. The Summer Mass Schedule begins Memorial Weekend. We will have an abbreviated Mass Schedule on Saturday and Sunday of Memorial Day weekend as has been our custom Mass in our parish will be celebrated in the Chapel at 9:00am on Monday, 27th, in observance of the Memorial Day civic holiday. The Colts Neck Parade is on this year. It is a great tradition…. Hope to see you there. This coming week, 16 May, I celebrate the 32nd Anniversary of Priestly Ordination, year 33 will begin. Please pray for me and for all priests.
Happy Mothers Day to all who embrace that noble vocation of giving life. May these women of faith continue to nurture the faith of generations to come so that our Catholic Church might continue to grow in faithful witness to God’s presence in the world. Have a great week. Let us remember one another in prayer. Happy Sunday. Peace. Father Jeff
