In 1973, The O’Dell Family of three moved to North Tustin to set down roots. It has been home ever since, with three generations of family living locally and working for the family’s residential real estate business today. They have been a dominant force in their profession since 1978, stemming from their steadfast desire to help people find their forever homes.

So, Who Are They? Sarah looking younger than her age and Dean being prematurely gray has created a lot of confusion among the public over the years! Referring to the adjacent photos, Gary and Sarah are married, and Dean and April are their children who were born 10 years apart. Dean’s wife, Dani, is also on the team, as well as their daughter, Dena. Now that we’ve cleared up the common, humorous misconceptions that Dean is married to Sarah, and that April and Dani are his daughters, let’s start at the beginning. With the O’Dells.

What’s Their Story? Gary is the Patriarch and entered the business part-time in 1969. He relocated the family here from Palos Verdes for land, space, and more blue skies. Sarah left her career in banking in 1978, and obtained her Broker’s license to have flexibility with Gary’s teaching career. Her passion and success in the business was truly remarkable and she quickly found herself among the top luxury agents in Orange County. Their son, Dean, earned a dual degree in Finance and Real Estate and obtained his Broker’s License in 1990. He was leaning towards real estate development when the death of Sarah’s father thrust him into the business unexpectedly. It was a baptism by fire, but also a moment of enlightenment as he took to it quickly. When Dani joined, she completed the strong foundation for the team, using her skills as a CPA to handle the business’ finances. Decades later, their daughter Dena joined them, specializing in information technology and digital marketing. Their son, Derek, and his wife, Zara, have their own company and reside in Tustin Ranch. It remains to be seen if they will join the family business someday! After a successful career in broadcasting, April joined the family business in 2014. Her investigative skills, natural curiosity and genuine care for people made it a seamless transition in careers. She is now a top sales agent, following in the O’Dell family footsteps. Her husband, Jay, is a commercial real estate broker, and they have three kids; Chatham, Julia and Garrett. Like her older brother and his children, April and her children attended Tustin schools from elementary to high school.

Just like The O’Dell Family, nearly all team members live in the local Tustin areas, and many have grown up here with multigenerational roots. The team is like one big family with a synergy that unites them, with all but a few working together for 7-20

years. In the adjacent page, you may recognize some of their names and know them or their family members. Future editions of The Tustin Insider will spotlight them individually.

Mac & Cheese Bites

A comfort classic that everyone will love! Crisp on the outside yet soft, creamy and cheesy on the inside.

Ingredients:

For the mac and cheese:

1 pound elbow macaroni

2 cups shredded sharp white cheddar cheese

1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese

¼ cup unsalted butter

2 cups whole milk

Instructions:

1. Bring pot of water to a boil and cook pasta according to package directions.

2. Heat large sauce pan on mediumlow heat to melt butter. Once melted, add in the flour and whisk continuously until thickened with a nutty aroma.

3. Gradually mix in the milk until there are no longer any lumps. Increase temperature to medium heat and bring to a light simmer. Whisk continuously until mixture thickens.

4. Mix in the cheese until melted and incorporated.

¼ cup all-purpose flour

½ teaspoon garlic powder

½ teaspoon onion powder

¼ teaspoon salt and pepper

For the breading:

5 large eggs

2 cups all-purpose flour

3 cups panko bread crumbs

1 cup Italian style bread crumbs

1 teaspoon salt

vegetable oil

5. Stir in the cooked and drained pasta to the cheese mixture until well coated. Let cool and refrigerate in an airtight container for at least 4 hours.

6. Once cooled, form 1 ½ inch balls of mac and cheese by pressing to compact. Place on baking sheet and put back in fridge to keep cool.

7. In a shallow bowl, add the flour for the breading. In a second shallow bowl, add the eggs for the breading and whisk. In a third shallow bowl, combine panko bread crumbs, Italian style bread crumbs, and salt. Set aside until step 9.

8. Prepare oil by pouring into a large Dutch oven until about 4 inches deep and heat until oil is approximately 375 degrees Fahrenheit.

9. Remove mac and cheese balls from fridge and begin by coating each ball in flour first, then the eggs, and then the bread crumb mixture.

10. Begin frying mac and cheese balls in heated oil in small batches. Let fry for about 3 minutes or until golden brown.

11. Remove and transfer to a paper towel lined plate, serve and enjoy while warm!
