None of that had happened. Nor the worst-case scenario either. Nothing. She picked up the phone. “Hi, darling,” came Don’s familiar voice, “how are you?” “Fine.” Don heard the deadness in her voice. “Ilana, have you done any work? On the pages.” “No. Don, I can’t.” He had given up saying how good it would be for her to immerse herself in some work. Now he tried a different tack. “We need the pages, Ilana. The client is getting twitchy.” “Eli can do them,” Ilana said. “Eli is snowed under. We’re all snowed under. We need your help. Please.” Ilana sighed. One hand held the phone as if for support, her other hand making aimless gestures at her wig. “I...I...it’s just so difficult...I...oh, all right. I’ll make a good start on them this morning.” Don tried not to let his sigh of relief be audible down the wires. “E-mail the pages to me as soon as you have done them. I told the client he’d have something to look at on the server by one today. Think you can manage that?” “One?” Again the distracted gestures at loose strands. “I don’t know. What time is it now?” “It’s ten. You have a good three hours and you’re quick. Shouldn’t take you more than two hours to get at least something for him to look at. The list of things to do to the site are on your desk. They’ve been there awhile. Let’s hope Maria hasn’t mistaken them for trash in the meantime and chucked them out.” “No, the list is still there. I see it every time I pass my desk.” Passing her desk was as far as she’d gotten these past three days. Don refrained from commenting. “So you’ll e-mail me around noon with the stuff?” “Yes, yes, yes. Leave me alone, Don.” She hung up and stood there, trembling. From her vantage point in the kitchen she could see through to the study and the computer. It loomed menacingly.

Maria came into the kitchen, a purposeful look on her face and a bucket in her hand. “Ilana, I wanna clean the kitchen. You gotta get out.” Well, that’s telling me, Ilana thought with a faint smile. Gathering up her things, she walked into the study as if to the guillotine. She sat down before the computer. The screen saver danced; it was an animated Torah and some mitzvah men, intended to teach Josh about berachos. Quickly she touched the mouse so the screen saver vanished and her familiar desktop appeared. With a few clicks, she turned off the screen saver. She went into her text editor and brought up the relevant pages. As the browser loaded, she looked at the list of work to be done. Systematic, she told herself, be systematic. Just plow through the list, starting at A and working your way through to Z. Don’t think. Just do it. She forced herself to focus on the work, and it began to absorb her thoughts, to dissipate all intruders, to take over. Switching between the text editor, where she wrote the HTML, and the browser, where she viewed it, was comforting. The switching back and forth worked on her like a pendulum, soothing her, almost hypnotizing her. She loved seeing the Web pages take shape under her skilled hands. Making sure the tables were aligned, the graphics correctly sized and positioned, the frames pointing to the right target, all calmed her, gave her order in at least one part of her life while the rest was in chaos. She designed the background in Paintshop Pro, added some special effects in Photoshop, and saved it. She made it as pale as possible so as not to interfere with the text going on top and tried it out in her browser. It just needed a bit of adjustment. She worked at it, not even stopping for a coffee even though she was parched. When she was satisfied with the pages, she sat back and realized her back was hurting. She cat-stretched in a few directions, hearing the bones crack, and it felt good. She stood up and stretched again, looking at the clock. It was half past twelve. The morning had not gone so fast for three days. She e-mailed the pages over to the office with all the graphics, feeling quite fulfilled. Once the pages had gone, just before she logged off, she saw an e-mail downloading. So absorbed was she in her work, she hadn’t thought to check if she had any incoming mail. A message appeared on her screen. “You have new mail!” She clicked the OK icon and opened the letter. It was a few brief lines. It had no header and no return address.

Chapter Seven Colin Sommers sat thoughtfully at his desk, tapping a pen against his teeth. Tap tap tap. Three days. Usually, in cases of missing kids, they were found within the first three days. On a jaunt usually, dead sometimes, but they were found. Now what did he have? One missing kid. One missing kid, some trace evidence taken from the house, and an untraceable e-mail message that was puzzling the living daylights out of him. The trace evidence was stuff Joe had taken from the windowsill and carpet of Josh’s bedroom. The fibers Joe had lifted from the windowsill turned out to be from a pair of red and black Batman pajamas. So it looked very likely that the kid had been lifted or dragged out of the window, catching his pajamas on the way out. There were some other fibers, which turned out to be from a dark sweatshirt or sweatpants. Josh did not own such a garment — he’d checked — so one could reasonably suppose it was from the abductor. The mud and dirt was, predictably, from their own front garden, but there was some fibrous, well-rotted plant material that did not seem to be from the Hardmans’ garden. And there were some other trace elements that had been faithfully labeled and bagged but remained unidentifiable. Colin was seriously considering calling in an expert. Someone who knew more than he did about deciphering the most flimsy of clues, a criminologist of some kind. Such people did nothing but study trace evidence. His men, good though they were, were like the general practitioners of crime detection. He needed a professor. Much as he hated admitting he was stumped, Colin was floundering in this case. He looked on the computer databases for expert criminologists, but no one immediately grabbed his attention. Aside from that there was that mysterious e-mail. Ilana had called a few hours ago, frantic. He’d promised her he’d get on it right away and Jeff, the department computer whiz, said he’d work on it. Colin himself had absolutely no idea how an e-mail could be untraceable

or anonymous. As far as he knew, before you could even send an e-mail, you had to fill in all your details, including a return address. Heck, you probably had to fill in your National Insurance number and foot measurements before the e-mail would send itself. And yet this mail had arrived, orphaned, origins unknown, and if you clicked the Reply icon there was a total blank in the sender’s window. How was this done? How was it possible? Sighing, Colin felt about an inch high. He was in charge of a case that was going nowhere. All his efforts to solve it produced no answers. Of course he submitted the photo of young Josh to all the local papers, and thanks to Lucy it was prominently displayed along with the caption “Have you seen this child?” So far this had garnered two dozen responses, with sightings of the boy in places as remote as Pinner and downtown London, known as the West End. Followups had proved fruitless despite the ad stating quite distinctly the boy’s eye and hair color; the boys spotted were nothing like the image of Josh. The tracking dogs were a dead end. They had eagerly followed a trail leading out of the bedroom window, but the trail stopped dead at the curb and the dogs had stood, whining pathetically, unable to go any further. It seemed that the boy had been brought down some kind of ladder, pushed into a car, and taken away. The ladder was missing, but there were some holes in the earth outside the window that could have been made by a ladder. Joe had bagged the earth around the ladder holes, too. Another piece of trace evidence to be filed away, but nothing to compare it with. Then there was the matter of the Hardmans and all the religious stuff he had so studiously avoided for the past ten years. He was finding it harder to sneer. His lifestyle was so different, and he had thought better. But now, seeing the life he had left contemptuously, he found there were elements he was missing. Small things, like the warmth of the Hardman home, despite the tragedy in it, the menorah and the Shabbos candlesticks in the glass-fronted cabinet. He recalled now his mother’s delicious food, a meal always ready when he came home. Whatever Lucy was, she wasn’t a cook. She was excellent at ordering takeout, and that was about it. Even in the midst of the Hardmans’ crisis, more often than not he smelled good food cooking on the stove when he entered the house.
