Chapter Five cont “What do you need from us?” Don asked, changing the subject. “Firstly, I need something of Josh’s, preferably something that has his smell strongly on it, if you get my meaning. Something your help didn’t wash this morning. I know Joe took some socks, but they’ve been analyzed and I’d like something that hasn’t passed through hands or microscopes. We have tracker dogs, and if they can pick up his scent, they might be able to trace where he went from here, at least till the trail turns cold. The scent will be stronger on something that’s come straight from the house.” “Yes, of course.” Ilana jumped up and ran upstairs to her son’s room. “I’ll get it at once!” she called down. Don looked at Colin. “I’m worried about her,” he confessed. “She’s slipping in and out of denial. I’m no shrink, but I see signs of post-traumatic stress disorder. She is finding it hard to focus on reality. She seems to find the safety of a dream world preferable.” “She’ll need a lot of support,” Colin said. “Try your best to keep her focused for now. If she wants to slip away every now and then, well, that’s not the end of the world, so long as she comes back. It’s when the periods away get longer than the periods she’s with us, that’s when you need to call in professional help.” “I don’t think she should be in a dream world at all, to be frank,” Don replied testily. “We have to find our son. I can’t do this on my own, and if she’s going to be spaced out most of the time, it will be much more difficult for me to cope.” “And what about her, sir? What about how difficult this is for her? Why not allow her some escape every now and then?” Don colored. “I suppose I sound selfish.” Colin smiled thinly. “This is hard on both of you. You need to support each other and cope as best as you can in your own way.” Ilana entered the kitchen and handed Colin a plastic bag with an item of Josh’s inside. “Good,” said Colin. “Excellent. Now, about Maria. How long has she been with you?” “You suspect Maria? Oh, Inspector, no way. Maria was my mother’s help for many years before she became mine. She’s utterly loyal and dependable.” “Family of her own?”

“Yes, she has a husband and two sons.” “Husband works, does he?” “Yes, as far as I know. He runs a private cab company.” “Hmm. Okay. I suppose her work permit’s in order?” Don coughed. “Look, Inspector, is this really necessary? You know how it is with these foreigners. They come over to make money. Maria’s been wonderful. We have no reason to doubt her. Please don’t start looking too hard under the wrong rocks. That’s all I’m saying.” Colin tapped the side of his nose. “Understood. Don’t worry, sir.”

There was a small, embarrassed silence, then the policeman went on. “Now, sir, about your business. How many do you employ?” “Oh, there are only twelve of us. It’s very small.” “What kind of business is it and where are its offices?” “It’s an Internet design company called Intergraph, based in Camden Town. We design Web sites for corporate clients, doing our own graphic designs and running our own servers. We also lease Web space and offer e-mail services.” Colin nodded. He used computers extensively in his own work, accessing police databases and other networks. “My wife works for me,” Don went on unprompted. “She’s a very good designer and she writes CGI scripts, too.” “Have your employees been with you long?” Don thought. “They’re not all employees. We are four partners. We’ve been together since the business’s inception. My wife makes five. Then we have five guys on tech support. They work shifts. And there are two secretaries. The secretaries have been with us for years. The tech support guys, well, two are newish. The others have been with us for at least a year.” “Would you say any of the staff would have a reason to have a grudge against you?” “None that I know of. We pay fairly and the hours are standard. I don’t think I’m too horrible a boss.” He smiled valiantly. “He’s a fine boss,” Ilana confirmed. “The staff respect him. You can tell.” “I’ll need to interview them if that’s okay with you, sir,” Colin said. “Sure, that’s fine. Here’s my card. “I want no attempts at vigilante high jinks. You do not, repeat not, try and find your son yourself or badger people about him. Leave this to us now.” Don barked a short laugh. “He’s our son, Inspector. Who better than we have the sixth sense that might help find him?” Colin stepped slowly and deliberately forward. “Mr. Hardman, more damage has been done by wellmeaning parents taking matters into their own hands than you can possibly imagine.” Ilana gave the policeman a stubborn look. “It’s not only the sixth sense. Who better than we would have the motivation to want to continue looking for him long after you might consider the case closed?” Colin closed his eyes for a moment, then opened them. “Mrs. Hardman, if you think for one minute that a missing eight-year-old kid doesn’t bother me, you’ve got another think coming. You can rest assured I won’t sleep nights until he is found.” “I wish I could believe you’d lose as much sleep as I will,” Ilana said, and turned away. When she looked back, Colin had gone. “That wasn’t very helpful,” Don remarked. “We want to have the cops on our side, not alienate them.” Ilana sighed. “I know. That was stupid of me. I’ll call him and apologize. He left us his mobile number.” “Leave it.” But she was already dialing. Her need to have as much right as possible in her life was strong. She spoke to Colin and humbly apologized. He was surprised. He was used to verbal abuse and this was mild; he had barely given it a thought. Strange people, these frummers. Real mixture. Back at the incident room Colin gave Sergeant White the plastic bag Ilana had given him for the trackers. “Here. Give the dogs a sniff of this outside the Hardmans’, then take them up to the kid’s room and see where they go from there.” “Yeah. House-to-house proceeding normally. Nothing of much note yet. Most of the people round here know the kid. It’s a kind of village really. Not like our other patches where you don’t even know your next-door neighbor. Here they practically know what he had for breakfast. Most of the kids go to the same school. If they’re boys anyway.” “There’s a couple of alternative schools,” Colin said, remembering. “Yeah, but it seems a whole crowd of kids round here all

go to that school. They all seem to like Josh. Real upset they are. Headmaster has ordered special prayers to be said.” “Tehillim,” Colin said vaguely. White gave him a look. “What’s that?” Colin recovered himself. “I remember hearing it from the neighbors’ kids when I played with them. It means psalms. They say psalms as a prayer.” “I thought psalms were songs, not prayers,” White said, shaking his head. “Well, so long as they think it helps.” “Yeah. So long as they think so. So nothing major in the house-to-house then?” “No. One of the kids got a bit dramatic, fancies himself a future psychiatrist. Said Josh was acting disturbed for a couple of days before he disappeared. Other than that, nothing.” “Disturbed? How?” “Dunno. Didn’t take much notice, being as the Freud character was only eight.” “Assume nothing. Remember what I said? Which house was this? I want to speak to this kid myself. Even if it’s a wild goose chase it’s all we have for now.” White consulted his list. “Number 17, the street next to the Hardmans’.” White and Sommers went there together. The woman who answered the door was rather surprised to see the police there again. She was small and heavyset with a sweet round face devoid of makeup. Colin secretly thought her housecoat and scarf made her look frumpish; it reminded him of the way his mother had looked at her least glamorous. He had hated it then and still did. Why did women have to make themselves look so dowdy just because they were religious? he thought. Colin snorted. Don’t these women care how they look? “What’s wrong, Inspector?” she asked White. “Mrs. Brandt, Detective Inspector Sommers here would like to ask your young son some questions based on our earlier interview. Is he in?” She looked flustered for a moment. “Come in. I’ll see.” They followed her into a cluttered hallway scattered with toys and small sit-and-ride cars. Small children everywhere, it seemed to Colin. Bet she doesn’t even know if he’s in or out. Typical. “Moishie!” she called. “Are you in your room?” A clamor of voices, but not from Moishie apparently. “He’s out playing football,” someone called from upstairs.
